BHP Iron Ore initiated research programs in January 1995 to develop long-term plans for decommissioning waste rock material at its Mt. Whaleback operation. More than 2 Gt (2.2 billion st) of waste rock were deposited during the past 30 years. Ultimately, a total of 4 Gt (4.4 billion st) will be deposited in waste rock dumps constructed near the open pit. The Mt. Whaleback operation is located in a semiarid climate adjacent to Newman, Western Australia. The primary research program includes the development of technology for the long-term performance of the waste rock dumps with respect to vegetation, slope stability, surface runoff, erosion and water infiltration. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of a cover system to prevent water infiltration to the underlying waste rock. Data obtained from a laboratory program and from soil-atmosphere modeling was used to design horizontal field test plots. The construction of the horizontal surface field test plots is discussed together with the field instruments installed to monitor performance. The cover system is designed to maximize infiltration during wet periods for subsequent evapotranspiration while minimizing surface runoff. The result is a near-zero net infiltration to the underlying waste material. An important feature of the design is the use of run-of-mine waste material as the cover material. Monitoring is in progress and will continue for at least two annual wet/dry cycles. The optimum cover system should minimize the net infiltration of water to the underlying waste rock while maintaining physical and ecological integrity for long-term performance.

AS the end of the collegiate year approaches, the problem of student employment again becomes acute. This subject divides itself into two phases: (1) employment prior to graduation and (2) employment following graduation. "Experience is the best teacher," according to the old adage, and the student needs all that he can get. He is afforded every opportunity to reap from his books the theories and principles of scientific and engineering practice, and occasionally he is privileged to make field trips to observe the practical side of the subject. But it is not enough for one to know the theory and to observe its application; it is also desirable for the student to get the feel of the tools during his training Such opportunities can only be afforded the student if the major companies cooperate with the universities in giving the student part-time and vacation work.

Os aços inoxidáveis supermartensíticos (AISM) foram projetados a partir dos aços inoxidáveis martensíticos de mais alto teor carbono, o seu desenvolvimento começou na década de 90. As características principais que os definem como supermartensíticos são: o baixo teor de carbono (C<0,03%) e adição de alguns elementos de liga, especialmente Ni e Mo, essas mudanças na composição química junto com os tratamentos térmicos adequados (têmpera e revenimento) fornecem excelentes propriedades mecânicas e resistência à corrosão melhorada, comparados com os aços inoxidáveis martensíticos UNS S41000 e S42000. Neste trabalho estudou-se o efeito da adição de Nb e da temperatura de revenimento (550°C, 575°C e 600°C) sobre a resistência à corrosão por pite e sobre o grau de sensitização através de dois AISM, um denominado SM2MoNb contendo 0,11% Nb e outro SM2Mo sem adição de Nb. Os resultados mostraram que o aço SM2MoNb apresentou, nas três temperaturas estudadas de revenimento, melhor resistência à corrosão por pite e menor grau de sensitização(GS), ou seja menor tendência à corrosão intergranular. Sabe-se que o Nb ajuda a diminuir o GS devido à inibição da precipitação de Cr23C6 por estabilização de carbono formando NbC em temperaturas mais altas, mas, na literatura especializada, não foram encontradas explicações quanto ao comportamento da corrosão por pite.

Introduction The manufacture of some asbestos products involves the use of asbestos in combination with water, cement and granular fillers. This type of production is often called the wet or semi-wet process and requires the use of either pressure or vacuum to eliminate the excess water in the fibrous blend so that the product may develop the proper strength during the curing stage. Asbestos - cement products available today are numerous and are a valuable contribution to the building industry. Their production in quantity depends upon the type of equipment employed, the speed at which it can be operated, and the factors involving the? blending of asbestos, cement, water, and fillers. Assuming that all mechanical troubles at a plant have been eliminated or are under control it is still advisable to study the basic properties of the raw materials used in the asbestos-cement products. The type of cement used is an important factor, but usually the manufacturer of the cement is willing to work with the asbestos development engineer and recommend the proper type to be used for the product. The source of the water should not be overlooked as a general factor involved in the production cycle. Waters containing a high percentage of contamination such as silts, humus, or soluble salts may adversely affect the setting of the cement or cause a slowing down of the production rate in the factory. Asbestos in combination with cement is an ideal material fo1 building products. It is inorganic, will not deteriorate, and can be handled by mechanical equipment with a minimum reduction of fibre length. The many physical properties peculiar to asbestos fibres should be well understood by the manufacturer. They may be briefly enumerated as follows: fibre strength, fibre composition, sliminess, length, harshness, softness, and filterability or porosity. This last named property is important and it is the purpose of this paper to present some basic studies on filtration as applied to production problems.

The risk associated with mining induced seismicity and the related rock bursts has become one of the major threats to the safety and sustainability of mining at the Kiirunavaara mine. The causes of mining induced seismicity at the Kiirunavaara mine are very complex and have affected our understanding on the source mechanisms of seismicity and further the mitigation of the seismic risk. Detailed analysis of historical mining induced seismicity at the Kiirunavaara mine was conducted. The focus of this analysis was placed on the classification of large seismic events and the evaluation of the influential factors on the classified seismic events. 145 events with local magnitude larger than 1.5 that occurred between January 1, 2011 and March 31, 2021 were analyzed. For this analysis, seismic events located in the hanging wall were not included, as these have not been observed to cause large damages to the mine itself. It was found that the magnitude of the events had good correlation with the stress change in relation to the production location. The seismic events were classified as mining-front associated, ore-pass associated, mining-front and ore-pass associated and others, according to their hypocenter location. Most of the mining-front associated events, concentrated around the production levels and slightly above and below them, generally correlated with shear cracks, and most of them occurred when the ore flow between two production levels started. The numerical modelling showed that slip of the geological discontinuity, due to unclamping between hanging wall and footwall, could be the major causative mechanisms, which further supports this finding. The ore-pass associated events are located close to the ore passes. Large seismic events located between ore passes have the source mechanism of both fault-slip and non-shear, but events located at the outer side of ore passes were all fault-slip type. By checking with the ore pass scanning data, it was concluded that the most of the events located between ore passes could be pillar bursts. An elastic core concept has been then used to define a critical pillar width. The paper is not intended to be prescriptive but rather to initiate discussion of the possible classification of seismic events at the Kiirunavaara mine and to present new perspectives of the causes of the seismicity for improving the present seismic risk management.

"Several studies on the bulk density of coals prepared for byproduct-oven use were undertaken during the war by the Bureau of lanes in cooperation with the Office of the Solid Fuels Administrator and with the advice of the Coke Production Committee. The primary purpose of these studies was either to produce more uniform coke or to increase the throughput of existing facilities or both; the goal was increased Production of steel for war. As these studies were made, detailed reports were sent to the individual companies with whom the Bureau cooperated; also two reports,5/6/on the general subject of bulk-density control were published. In the course of the work, data were gathered that now prove of value in judging the merit of carious methods of testing bulk density and the limits of application of each method in byproduct-oven operations.Since the cessation of hostilities, the .Bureau section (Coke Production Survey Section) that conducted this work has been liquidated, but it was felt advisable to prepare a report on the accumulated experience so that it would be in a form available for the use of the industry and also as a base for any further research on the control of fluctuating bulk densities in coke ovens.It is hoped that the data and experiences recorded herein will be of material assistance to the many who have had difficulty in obtaining reproducible results in bulk-density testing. Since the data were gathered in the course of extending aid to individual plants in minimizing the deleterious effects of fluctuations in bulk density of oven charges on the quality and quantity of coke produced, certain desirable phases of an over-all investigation were not covered. However, on certain of these phases qualitative indications are available and the policy followed herein is that suggested by the American Society for Testing Materials Manual on Presentation of Data7/ that lacking quantitative information, relevant material should be included even though it ""may be qualitative in character, some may even be vague."""

wben a displacement front encounters an isolated permeability heterogeneity, it will be perturbed. The details of this perturbation will depend on the beterogeneity size and shape, the Permeability contrast, and the mobility ratio. This paper deals with the displacement front behavior for one, simple, mathematically tractable model: a circular permeability discontinuity and unit mobility ratio. The progress of an initially planar front is shown for four permeability contrasts: k2/k1 = 0, 5/2, 2, m. The front distortion is more pronounced than streamline and isopotential distortion and it approaches a constant shape downstream from the discontinuity. INTRODUCTION The impact of reservoir heterogeneities on oil displacing processes depends upon the variation of the heterogeneous property (frequency distribution), its disposition (spatial distribution), and the inherent stability of the displacement mechanism.l The interplay of these factors plus the impracticability, if not impossibility, of describing a natural rock system in any detail makes exact displacement front movements difficult to determine. It is useful, however, to be able to qualitatively visualize what heterogeneities will do to a displacement front. In this respect certain simple models that can be treated analytically are of value. The following analysis will show the displacement front behavior for one such model. MODEL DESCRIPTION The flow field is two-dimensional and infinite in extent. The fluid flow is single phase, steady state and unidirectional at x, y = 2 m, or before insertion of the discontinuity. A circular permea- bility discontinuity is placed at the origin. Porosity and thickness are the same within and exterior to the heterogeneity. This is exactly the same model that was used by Greenkorn et al. to check analytically Streamlines as determined by Heie-Shaw flow models and finite difference computer techniques.2 FRONT POSITION CALCULATIONS The results of displacement front calculations are presented in Figs. 1 through 4 for four different permeability contrasts: k2/kl = O, %, 2, m. Occidental Oil Shale, Inc. constructed two commercial-sized modified in situ (MIS) retorts, Retorts 7 and 8, at its Logan Wash Oil Shale Mine in February and April 1981, respectively. One of the primary objectives of this two-retort program was to examine large-scale blasting reproducibility for commercial-sized retorts. The blast design used 545 blastholes and 550,000 pounds of explosive in ANFO equivalent per retort. Each retort was blasted using millisecond delay blasting caps tied into a single round. The blasts resulted in rubble beds very close to one another and to predicted results obtained using newly developed limited void blasting technology. The heights of the remaining void rooms over the beds after blasting were within 0.3 feet of one another. This excellent reproducibility is brought into true perspective when compared to the scale of the rubble beds which were 230 feet high with volumes of over six million cubic feet each.

Introduction Self-tuning regulators are a class of controllers built around the concepts of sampled data theory, and are especially suitable for implementation in a digital microprocessor or minicomputer control system. The algorithms used are distinctly different from those based upon analog control techniques and include automatic adjustment features which permit them to adapt to unmeasured changes (in, for example, ore grindability) or process nonlinearities (as exhibited by cyclone classifiers). They are also designed to handle transport lags in a simple manner, for example, anticipating the effects of a variable recycle rate on particle size distribution. The advent of distributed control systems will encourage the exploration of these techniques in the minerals processing industries, and particularly for improving the control of comminution circuits, which are especially energy intensive. This paper outlines some current work in progress on this topic. Background Those engaged in the practice of process control have long had two philosophical problems for which solutions have been actively sought - what is optimal control and how can we attain it in some heuristic fashion automatically. The basic analog controller can be represented by the differential equation: [V = Ko + K1 f y • dt + K2 dt(1)] where: v and y are the instantaneous values of output and error respectively and K0, K1, and K2 are tuning constants. The empirical rules for establishing the values of K0, K1, and K2, which provide stability, have evolved from the initial suggestions of Ziegler and Nichols(9) in 1942 and have served their purpose well. However, later analyses demonstrated that there are in fact many combinations of the values of K0, K1, and K2 which, besides being stable, behave better or worse in relation to other process control criteria; some examples are duration of error, amplitude of a damped response, magnitude or rate of movement of control valve or adjustment of speed regulator, etc. The definition of optimality had broadened. Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar a origem do projeto inovador do cadinho do Alto-forno 2 além do planejamento, a implantação e os resultados obtidos no Alto-forno 2 da Aperam South America após a reforma. O trabalho de pesquisa e desenvolvimento teve início em 2012 após a primeira marcha fria com conseqüente redução das temperaturas da soleira. Foram realizadas diversas reuniões, discussões e seminário sobre alto-forno com especialistas de diversas empresas. A mudança de redutor carvão vegetal para coque por seis meses serviu para comprovar parte da teoria construída pelo time da redução. Para, por fim, culminar no conceito por trás do problema do AF2 e então o novo design do cadinho que foi proposto e implantado na reforma iniciada em dezembro de 2017. Após sua implantação, conforme teorizado pelo time, uma nova gama de resultados e patamar de operação foram atingidos, comprovando diversas das teorias formuladas.

Laboratory tests on three commercial methane detectors, two combustion-type detectors and one interferometer-type detector, were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine their response to certain single and multiple flammable gases mixed with normal and abnormal air atmospheres. Although both types of detectors responded accurately to methane-normal air mixtures, they did not show correct concentrations for other single flammable gases in air. Uniquely, the response of the interferometer-type detector to hydrogen was in a negative direction. The effects of individual gases in multiple flammable gas mixtures were approximately additive. In oxygen-deficient atmospheres the methane response of the interferometer-type detector erred on the high side, but only in very low oxygen concentrations were the combustion-type detectors affected-showing low, erratic methane readings.

A partial shaft pillar extraction project was embarked on at a mine in the West Wits mining region in South Africa. Prior to the extraction, a rock engineering assessment was conducted with the main objective being to establish which areas of the shaft pillar could be extracted without unduly affecting the stability of major infrastructure within the shaft pillar. Standard numerical modelling methods were used to conduct this assessment and several areas were identified for extraction. However, during the extraction process, it was found that the infrastructure was affected more than was originally predicted by linear elastic modelling. In addition to this, several large events resulted in far more large aftershocks than would normally be predicted. In order to gain an understanding of this phenomenon, seismic data was integrated with numerical modelling as follows: > The seismic data in the form of displacements was integrated in 3D space within the model to assess the effect of static stress changes associated with seismic activity > Data from large events was integrated onto specific structures, where displacements associated with large events were integrated onto the plane of structure in question. This paper describes the methodology and results obtained from each of the above processes and include insights into the mining process that were previously unfathomable using standard linear elastic numerical modelling. The way forward for this rock engineering assessment of partial shaft pillar extraction is also discussed.

"The kinetics of boron removal from liquid silicon during slag refining, as a process step in the production of solar grade silicon, has been investigated by means of small scale mass transfer experimental series at 1600°C, using a graphite crucible. The slags were SiO2-CaO based, with or without addition of approx. 19 wt% MgO. Experiments were carried out at slag-metal ratios of 1 or 2, where the silicon initially contained approx. 250 ppm boron. The metal-slag mass transfer coefficients for boron were found to be in the order of 1-3 · 10-6 m/s and were largely influenced by slag composition. The mass transfer rate was higher for the MgO-containing slag than the slags without MgO. The final equilibrium distribution of boron between metal and slag, LB, was determined to be in the order of 2.3-3.3.I. INTRODUCTIONRecent years have seen a race in industry and research aimed at obtaining a reliable metallurgical route for production of silicon for solar cells (SoG-Si) from metallurgical grade (MG) silicon. Metallurgical routes can successfully challenge the traditional chemical routes for production of SoG-Si if they generate metal of sufficient purity while being less expensive in terms of production cost and energy consumption. Efficient removal of boron is one of the greatest obstacles in the refining of silicon by a metallurgical route, because the segregation coefficient of boron in silicon makes directional solidification unfeasible; in addition, the vapour pressure of boron is not high enough for removal by vacuum refining. However, the thermodynamic properties of boron makes removal from silicon by oxidation possible, and thus the process of slag refining of silicon has been receiving increasing attention as a method for boron removal."

Safescape Laddertube provides an improved system for emergency egress in ventilation shafts. The addition of Laddertube in a rise has very little impact on ventilation flow, studies have indicated that the difference in flow velocities are difficult to measure due to the minimal impact. Due to the size and open-ended nature of Laddertube, the air velocity inside and out of the Laddertube is mostly linear. Laddertube can be used either permanently or during an emergency as a secondary ventilation duct. One project involved a 385 m ladder installed in a surface return air raise that could be made to bypass the primary circuit and supply fresh air to a sea container fresh air base at the bottom of the raise. Laddertube has been designed to be installed to any feasible length and can be fitted with a climb assist system ensuring enhanced speed and reduced fatigue during ascent. The climb assist used in association with Laddertube is a Tractelift system which applies a weight relief of up to 36 kg off the climber’s body weight when using the ladder. This system has successfully been tested for ladders up to 600 m in length and is currently in use for a ladder of 185 m length. The use of refuge chambers in underground coalmines has long been a contentious issue due to the concern that while it may provide temporary shelter, the risk of being exposed to high heat or the inability for rescuers to access them due to fire or explosive atmosphere means that they may be effectively trapped. The additional application for coal environments includes Laddertube installed alongside a refuge chamber concealed behind a blast proof door ensuring a secondary means of emergency egress. In certain operations designs may allow for this chamber to be provided withpositive pressure fresh air.
