Bentonite is one of the main players in the stability of drilling mud. Its particle size and particle size distribution significantly affect drilling mud’s rheological properties. Although the Specifications for Drilling Fluids Materials report on Oil Companies Material Association (OCMA)-grade bentonite states that the API recommended powder having 2.5 percent mass fraction as the maximum value of residue of diameter greater than 75 μm, there is no other information on the specific size distribution for API bentonite. It was found that API bentonite has a specific size distribution with specific mixing weights. It is important to investigate why that mixture represents the optimum properties of drilling mud and how each individual size fraction has a specific function in the mixture. To clarify the effect of individual size as well as the collective effect of the size distribution, API bentonite was classified into different size fractions, with each tested separately for controlling properties such as filtration loss, plastic viscosity, gel strength, cake thickness and packing density.

The latest Draft MPRRB was released for public comment in October 2006. The main purpose of the Bill is to collect royalties at mines developed in terms of new-order mineral rights granted through the MPRDA process. The transition phase stipulated in the MPRDA will be completed by 1 May 2009, on which date mineral royalties will become payable to the state. The royalty rates stated in the MPRRB differ from mineral to mineral and also depend on the degree of refinement. Gold is the subject of this paper, where the royalty rate ranges from 1.5% (for refined gold) to 3% (for unrefined gold) of sales revenue. This royalty is payable regardless of profit, with a maximum 75% relief for loss-making mines. The purpose of this paper is to establish whether or not it would be necessary for gold mines to adjust their mineral reserve statements as a result of this Bill. The methodology is to add the royalty costs stipulated in the MPRRB to the actual quarterly information for the past ten years as reported by the gold-mine members of the COM. The rationale is to investigate the impact this Bill (in its current form) would have had on gold reserves that must be left unmined in the ground because of a higher pay limit. The results of the study point to a significant impact on reserves available for mining with the subsequent shortening of mine lives and retrenchment of workers. Had the MPRRB been effective for the 10 years prior to 1996, it would have resulted in 46 tonnes of gold being sterilised. Stated alternatively, 30 700 workers at COM gold mines alone would have lost their livelihoods.

Por meio de uma cooperação técnico-econômica entre a CSN e a EEL-USP, o método de expansão foi correlacionado com as fases identificadas e quantificadas por Difratometria de Raios-X e Método de Rietveld, respectivamente, além de compreender o mecanismo de expansão. Análises de regressão múltipla permitiram ajustar modelos matemáticos com 97,0% de ajuste e uma redução no tempo de ensaio de 14 dias (336 horas) para 7 horas.

The oil fields of Arkansas, all situated in the southern part of the State, have played an important part in the development of petroleum production in the northern coastal plain region of the Mid-Continent area. From the first discovery of oil in southwest Ouachita County in 1920 to December 31, 1930, a total of 480,167,5604/ barrels of crude petroleum has been produced from' this region. Development of the Arkansas fields proceeded rapidly after 1920. The El Dorado field was discovered in Union County in 1921. Drilling in Ouachita County resulted in the discovery of the Smackover field in 1922 and subsequently in the development of the whole southern area. To November 31, 1939,459 / producing wells had been drilled in 25 fields, aggregating 53,7356 acres of proved territory in 6 counties. Peak annual production for the State was reached in 1925, when 80,823,7007/ barrels was produced, resulting largely from flush production from the Smakover field, which rose td an average of 444,9507 barrel daily during that year. The ringing characteristics of acid and alkaline iron ore pellets powder in kiln were studied by the thermodynamic calculation using software FactSage7.0, roasting experiments using briquetting method and analysis of SEM-EDS. The thermodynamic calculation demonstrated that liquid phase could be generated from alkaline pellets powder at a lower temperature and the amount of formed liquid phase was much more than that from acid pellets powder at the same temperature. Roasting experiments indicated that the compression strength of alkaline pellets powder briquettes were also higher than that of acid pellets powder briquettes. Additionally, the analysis of SEM-EDS suggested that the alkaline pellets powder briquette presented more liquid phase and a more compact structure comparing with the acid pellets powder briquette, which was consistent with the results of thermodynamic calculation and roasting experiments. Hence, in comparison with acid pellets powder, alkaline pellets powder is much easier to ring in the kiln.

IGO Ltd’s (IGO’s) Nova Operation (Nova), which is 160 km east-north-east of the town of Norseman in Western Australia (WA), mines and processes nickel-copper-cobalt (Ni-Cu-Co) sulfide ore from the magmatic Nova-Bollinger Deposit (Nova-Bollinger), which is hosted by the Mesoproterozoic age high-grade metamorphic rocks of the Albany Fraser Orogen. Over its 56-month life-of-mine (LOM) operations to 31 December 2020, Nova has processed 5.63 Mt of ore grading 2.04 per cent Ni, 0.86 per cent Cu and 0.07 per cent Co from its underground mine. At the end of 2020, both the Nova-Bollinger JORC Code reportable Mineral Resource estimate (MRE) and Ore Reserve estimate (ORE) were >90 per cent classified in the highest JORC Code confidence categories of Measured Mineral Resource and Proved Ore Reserve respectively. The high JORC Code classification confidences assigned to the Nova-Bollinger MRE and ORE results from the 386 km of surface and underground diamond drill testing of the deposit to a nominal 12.5 by 12.5 m pierce point spacing in mineralisation. The close spaced high-quality drilling and bulk mining method employed at Nova has effectively removed the need for any grade control modelling outside of the MRE process. Importantly, having only the one fully drilled out deposit being mined and only the one process plant, Nova’s reconciliation process is in the fortunate situation of not being confounded by issues such as external ore sources and constant updates as new grade control information becomes available. IGO’s Nova reconciliation processes are focused on reconciliation ratios that quantify operational period differences between the MRE and ORE head grade and tonnage forecasts and the process plant head actuals. These metrics have been used to identify key reconciliation issues and have initiated several studies into the causes for specific reconciliation results, which are discussed in the paper. In late 2020, a period of sustained poor reconciliation results led to the recognition that increasing the understanding of risk between the MRE and ORE should be investigated. To assist with modelling stope level risk within the mine plan and subsequent reconciliation, an attempt was made to develop a formula to quantify ‘stope risk’ from MRE metrics such as sample spacing, kriging efficiency and so on

"During mechanical flotation of fine liberation sized complex rare earth ores, a large fraction of ultrafine valuable mineral particles are lost to tailings. Fine gangue mineral particles can be entrapped within the froth phase and be floated together with target mineral particles. Another common challenge in ultrafine rare earth mineral flotation is the formation of a sticky froth (excessively stable froth). Thus, the improvement of the flotation of fine and ultrafine rare earth bearing minerals through appropriate cell design and reagent selection is highly desirable. The aim of this study is to investigate the performance of a pico-bubble cavitation flotation column in improving selective recovery of ultrafine rare-earth elements (REEs) bearing minerals from complex and low-grade ores. In pico-bubble cavitation column, very small bubbles are generated which are capable of attaching to ultrafine particles and consequently modifying their surface properties. The overall effect of these processes should lead to improved flotation selectivity and recovery of ultrafine RE mineral particles. In this paper, the effects of a number of flotation operating variables on recovery and grade of REE minerals was investigated using a continuous pilot scale pico-bubble column flotation. At the flotation conditions used in this study, subtle monazite upgrade was observed while gangue Fe oxide was preferentially floated even in the presence of depressants. INTRODUCTION Rare earth elements (REEs) have unique properties such as superconductivity and catalytic activity, and are in high demand for a large number of cutting-edge technologies in the modern world including the production of mobile phones, fuel cells, displays, permanent magnets for wind power generation, high-capacity batteries, green energy devices, etc (Naumov, 2008). REEs tend to be intimately associated within many minerals, and are rarely found in high concentrations in deposits for economic extraction. Up to now, among over 250 minerals containing REEs, bastnasite (Ce), monazite (Ce, Th and La) and xenotime (Y) are the three main minerals that contain sufficient grade of REEs for commercial exploitation (Zhang and Edwards, 2012). The deposits that contain bastnäsite, monazite and xenotime usually have complicated mineral compositions, with various valuable minerals of fine embedded grain sizes in association with complex gangue minerals. In order to ensure liberation of the REEs minerals, fine grinding to less than 30 µm is necessary. This fine grinding leads to difficulty in recovering a large proportion of fine and ultrafine particles in separation processes such as flotation (Trahar and Warren, 1976). Consequently, highly liberated and ultrafine fine valuable REEs particles are lost into tailings during traditional mechanical flotation. Besides, the formation of extremely sticky and stable froth inhibits the drainage of hydrophobic particles. Thus, improving flotation of rare earth bearing minerals, particularly the ultrafine size range, is highly desirable."

The original analogue instrumentation at Lornex Mining Corporation to optimize the throughput by controlling the power drawn by the semi-autogenous mills was found to be inadequate because of the frequent changes in ore type. Although the trunnion bearing pressure of the mill was a crucial control criterion, it was not utilized in the original control scheme. After several plant tests of different types of analogue controllers were unsuccessful in finding any control equipment suitable for this application, it was concluded that a digital process control computer was required. Computer control strategy to optimize the grinding rate by controlling the power and the bearing pressure of the semi-autogenous mill was developed and a Fox 2 /30 computer made by Foxboro was selected. After six months of experimentation, it was found that the throughput was increased substantially by computer control.

Spring stiffness of soil and rock at different depth is often required for a pile structural model. If the pile is rested in multiple layers of soil, then it is rather more complex to simulate the soil in a structural model. The spring stiffness will vary based on density of soil strata over the depth. When a pile is socketed in weathered rock followed by a soil layer, a sudden change in subgrade modulus can influence the pile deflection drastically. Determination of soil spring and simulation of the pile in this condition required correct interpretation of subgrade modulus. The conventional approach of pile spring calculation underestimates the spring stiffness by ignoring underlaying stiffer layers. A finite difference method (FDM) of analysis can reasonably estimate the p-y of soil / rock based on subgrade modulus of each layer. However, the transition between the layers can be better simulated as per the deflection pattern of the pile. The lateral deflection of the pile is mainly dependent on the stiffness of soil layer surrounded by the pile. Generally, the lateral influence of a pile varies from 4D to 6D depending on the soil type. Therefore, soil spring stiffness around the pile would require special attention of a Geotechnical engineer to avoid uncertainty in the prediction of pile behaviour. In this paper, emphasis has been given to develop an approach for pile spring stiffness design. A standard software program LPile has been used to develop p-y curves of soil and rock layers at different depths and then converted to soil/ rock springs over the depth. Modulus of Subgrade Reaction as given in IS 2911 (Part2) was also used to correlate the spring value for different type of soil. Obtained analytical results were compared with full scale field trial for lateral deflection of pile. A good agreement between these two approaches has been established. The effect of soil structure interaction in the structural model shall be simulated by assigning an equivalent vertical and horizontal soil spring, which is developed by Winkler’s soil spring approach. A simplified design principle for calculating the pile spring is discussed in this paper. This approach has been extensively used in Mumbai metro elevated line pile design.

The 1973 Oil Embargo and succeeding disruptions in supply had a profound effect on energy costs and consumption patterns in the developed world. This was especially true in the USA where post World War II growth, fueled by low-cost imported oil, left the country dependent on uninterrupted oil shipments from the volatile Middle East. In this atmosphere, Professor H.H. Kellogg of Columbia University, convinced of the necessity of good environmental stewardship by the writings of the era’s leading environmentalists, developed a methodology for evaluating energy and process efficiency of metallurgical processes and wrote a series of papers describing and applying the techniques. One of these, "Energy Use in Sulfide Smelting of Copper" is recognized as a seminal work which both described the state of energy usage in copper smelting in the mid-1970’s and portended future developments. The background to these papers is examined and the current and past Cu-Ni matte smelting practices in Canada are examined in the context of the results. Data from early 20th century publications describing reverberatory and blast furnace operation is employed to show that energy consumption for much of the century was several multiples higher than that calculated for best reverberatory operation in the 1970’s.

The Cripple Creek Mining district is located in Teller County, Colorado, 30 km west of Colorado Springs and 9 km southwest of Pikes Peak (Fig. 1). Since its discovery in 1891, the district has produced almost 21 million tr oz of gold (Gott et al., 1967), most of which has been from high-grade vein deposits. Globe Hill is located in the northern part of the district (Fig. 2). Production from its summit has yielded over 100,000 tr oz of gold. Early production was concentrated along high-grade veins and fault structures, but emphasis was soon placed on the extensive, low-grade (0.0X oz/t), breccia-hosted mineralization. From 1977 to 1981 Newport Minerals, Inc., a subsidiary of Gold Resources, Inc., mined 680,000 t of low-grade gold ore from the Globe Hill pit (Fig. 3) and production is expected to resume in 1986. These strongly-altered and -oxidized breccias are amenable to bulk-mining methods, and thus similar deposits are currently being sought elsewhere in the district. Numerous publications and reports discuss the breccia-hosted mineralization at Globe Hill. They include Cross and Penrose (1895); Argall (1905, 1908); Lindgren and Ransome (1906); Keener (1962); Peters (1982); Thompson, Trippel, and Dwelley (1985); and Trippel (1985). This preprint is a summary of the recently-completed research documented by Trippel (1985).

Production of traprock occupies an important place in industry. In 1960 the output in the form of crushed stone reached nearly 58 million tons valued at $87 million. Traprocks are also shaped into blocks of dimension stone for monuments, building construction and decoration, and specialized products such as surface plates.

A calculation programme of finite element method has been developed in order to study the behavior of excavation with sheet piling in soft clay. Based on a series of isotropically consolidated-undrained tests (CIU) on Hangzhou clay a linear relationship between the normalized initial tangent modulus number, E1, and stress-path parameter, a, is found for four different stress paths, and stress-path dependent modulus equations derived. Meanwhile, several influence factors, such as embedment depth and stiffness of the wall and soil conditions, were taken into consideration in the programme. Some valuable conclusions were obtained. Finally, a case history was studied by the proposed method of calculation. The result of calculation and the field observation are in good agreement.

"As mudanças que ocorrem ao longo do recozimento na microestrutura e textura foram observadas no aço inoxidável ferrítico estabilizado ao nióbio, tipo ASTM 430 por meio de Difração de Elétrons Retroespalhados. As amostras deformadas foram recozidas com uma taxa de aquecimento de 23,5°C/s. O recozimento foi interrompido nas temperaturas de 780, 830 e 880°C para acompanhar a evolução da microestrutura e textura. Os resultados mostraram que a nucleação dos novos grãos ocorre preferencialmente nos contornos de alto ângulo. No estágio inicial da recristalização a fibra g é dominante na fração recristalizada, com as componentes 111121, 1111 ,1 2 mais intensas. Na fração não recristalizada a fibra a foi mais intensa. No progresso da recristalização as componentes 11112 1 e 1111 ,1 2 permanecem predominantes, a fibra g torna-se dominante em detrimento da fibra a."

Previous analyses of small samples of mining projects have found that feasibility studies tend to well under-estimate the actual capital costs of the project. Our review of 63 mining and smelting projects completed over 4 decades confirms that as-built capital costs are, on average, 25% higher than as estimated at the bankable feasibility study stage. There appears to be little attenuation over time of this bias in capital cost estimation, at first appearing to reflect an absence of learning on the part of the consulting engineer. We instead argue that this persistence of bias is intentional, driven by a scarcity of project financing and the need to inflate the project economics in a bid to secure financing. Around this intentional bias is a considerable amount of scatter. Roughly half of all projects’ as-built capita costs fall outside of the expected ±15% of the feasibility study capital cost estimate, even after allowing for intentional estimation bias. Cost overruns of 100% or more happen in roughly 1 out of 13 projects. The data reveal that a shifted lognormal probability distribution should be used when modeling mining project capital costs in a Monte Carlo analysis.

The Steeple Rock district is a major epithermal .gold-silver district in New Mexico that exhibits district zoning. Five types of ore deposits occur in the district. The base-metal veins (with Au and Ag) form the center of the district and occur along the Carlisle fault. The gold-silver veins occur along northwest-trending faults outward from the base-metal veins. The margins of the district are formed by copper-silver, fluorite, and manganese veins. In addition, areas of older acid-sulfate alteration occur throughout the district and also exhibit zoning: massive silica/chert zone (inner), silicified zone, and clay zone (outer). This alteration overlies regional; alkali-chloride (propylitic to argillic to sericitic) alteration. Synthesis of available data suggests the acid-sulfate alteration is related to a shallow but older epithermal hot springs system. Subsequently, younger epithermal veins formed along faults.

Nitric acid oxidation rate analyses of three coals, previously studied microscopically by the Bureau of Mines, revealed three components. Relative quantities agree with those found for the four components given by the Bureau and results are consistent with current ideas of coal constitution. Possible multi-component composition for bright coal and a reactivity-rank relation are suggested. THE physically dissimilar components of bituminous coals often are easily recognized mega-scopically. Under the microscope, reflected light or light transmitted through thin sections reveals the presence of the different components, even when these are intimately mixed. Optical methods for the quantitative estimation of the relative abundance of the various components, both by means of thin sections and by particle count, have been fully described.'. ' It has long been recognized that there are chemical and physical differences between the various petro-graphic components of bituminous coals, although analytical differences usually are small.:'. ' Only in the case of fusain have chemical differences been used for quantitative determination of a component. C. C. Hsiao and associates, at the Mineral Industries Experiment Station of the Pennsylvania State College, have described a method of analysis which is based upon the differences in the rate of nitric acid (8N) oxidation, fusain, and the other components of coal."," The reproducibility of their method and its applicability in checking microscopic determinations of fusain content have been supported by several independent investigations.'. " The writer has proposed the use of differences in oxidizability for the estimation of other components." "' The results of the oxidation of whole coals and of float-and-sink fractions of coals were reported. In most cases the plots of the logarithms of the percent dry, non-fusain, organic residue from oxidation, against time, revealed the presence of at least two distinct components. Both components appeared to oxidize according to a first order law, but the reaction constants for the components were distinctly different. One or more of the dull density fractions were found to contain but one component, and some of the lower rank coals oxidized in such a way as to suggest the presence of three components. A suitable way to check the identity and significance of the components delineated by oxidation would be to analyze a sample of coal both by the nitric acid oxidation procedure and by a microscopic method. The writer was wholly unfamiliar with either of the microscopic techniques commonly used, and to make such a comparison it was necessary to rely upon microscopic analyses made by someone else. It is hoped that some laboratory which is equipped to make both types of analyses will some day make them upon identical samples. During the past 20 years, four Alabama coals have been analyzed petrographically and the results published by the United States Bureau of Mines. They are: 1—Flat Top mine, Mary Lee bed; 2—Empire mine, Black Creek bed; 3—Wylam No. 8 mine, Pratt bed, all in the Warrior field; and 4—Soot Creek mine, Fairview bed, in the Coosa field."-" Of these, only the Flat Top mine is still operating. Because of the closing of these mines, it first appeared necessary to rely upon the indirect and unsatisfactory procedure of sampling the beds in other mines located as near to the closed mines as possible. Upon investigation, however, it was found that the Bureau of Mines still had, in storage, the very same samples which had been used in the published petrographic studies. The Bureau very generously furnished about 2000 g each of the Pratt, Mary Lee, and Fairview bed coals, largely lumps but with some fines. The blocks of coal, when received, still were covered by the paraffin coating which had been placed on the polished surface, in the case of the Mary Lee coal almost twenty years ago. Procedure The procedure for oxidizing the coal sample and removing the alkali-soluble humic acid has been described. In the present study, oxidation periods of 1/6, 1/3, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 2, 3, and 4 hr were used. All oxidations were made in triplicate. After the paraffin had been removed in boiling water and the coal washed carefully with cold benzene, the entire sample of approximately 2000 g, obtained from the Bureau of Mines, was crushed to pass a No. 4 sieve. Dolomite [CaMg(CO3)2] is an intolerable impurity in phosphate ores, due to its MgO content. The need to develop a cost-effective method for the removal of dolomite from high-MgO phosphate ores becomes increasingly important as high-grade reserves become depleted. The jigging process has been investigated as a method for the beneficiation of phosphate ores. A laboratory-scale jig was constructed and tested using a semicontinuous, ?through-the-screen? jigging process. Two types of sedimentary phosphate ore were used; a sample from Plant 1 in the 4.00 x 0.85-mm size range, containing 1.55% MgO, and a sample from Plant 2 in the 3.40 x 0.85-mm size range, containing 3.07% MgO. These were tested, using previously optimized jigging parameters, at high and low feed rates. For the Plant 1 phosphate ore, a phosphate concentrate that contained 0.89% MgO was achieved with a bone phosphate of lime (BPL) recovery of 32.0%. For the Plant 2 phosphate ore, a phosphate concentrate that contained 1.38% MgO was achieved, with a BPL recovery of 74.7%. Minimum achievable MgO grades were also determined by analyzing hand-separated phosphate samples.
