Recent exploration for mesothermal gold deposits in the Otago Schist has focussed largely on extensions of, or analogies to, the reverse fault-hosted Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone deposit. Abundant normal fault-hosted mesothermal and epithermal vein deposits in the Otago Schist have attracted less attention, largely because they have limited lateral extent and steeper dips. Northwest-striking normal fault-hosted vein sets near Barewood and Hindon in east Otago crosscut schist foliation on the Barewood-Hindon plateau at a high angle along a combined strike length in excess of 20 kilometres. The trend of the vein sets is not linear, but rather contains several right lateral steps. Almost all veins dip steeply to the northeast. Angular discordance between schist foliation and the plateau surface along the trend increases from near zero at the northwest end of the veins to about 30¦ at the southeast end. A new 2.5D airborne electromagnetic (AEM) algorithm has been developed by Intrepid Geophysics and Jovan Silic & Associates. The advantage of 2.5D (2D geology, 3D source) AEM inversion in 3D geological mapping applications and identification of conductive drilling targets, compared to the more commonly used conductivity-depth imaging (CDI) transforms or 1D inversions, are demonstrated using examples from banded iron formations (BIFs) and other geological settings. We show emerging AEM systems are capable of providing estimates of economic rock unit thicknesses, dips and fault definition at an accuracy that mitigates the need for pattern drilling.The 2.5D inversion application used in this work and described in Silic et al (2015) is a substantially changed version of ArjunAir (Wilson, Raiche and Sugeng, 2006), a product of CSIRO/AMIRA project P223F. The changes include a new forward model algorithm and a new inversion solver. The application enables the accurate simulation of 3D source excitation for full domain models inclusive of topography, non-conforming boundaries and very high resistivity contrasts. Solution is accurate for a geoelectrical cross-section, which is relatively constant along a strike length that exceeds the AEM system footprint.The major innovation includes a new inversion solver with adaptive regularisation, which allows the incorporation of a misfit to the reference model and the model smoothness function.Memory usage has been dramatically reduced and is estimated prior to execution. For speed the software has been parallelised using Intel message passing interface (MPI) and can be used on standard computing hardware or computing clusters. Data from survey lines with lengths exceeding 100 km can be inverted on high end laptop computers.We allow flexibility in the selection of components and in the estimation of noise.AEM inversion examples are shown for surveys from BIFs, base metals (volcanogenic massive sulfides) and geological mapping projects and the results are compared with known geology and drilling. I was confronted with a profound dilemma as an undergraduate engineering student at the University of New South Wales in Australia in 1992. I had been taught that our planetary life-support systems were in a state of alarming decline by an institution that operated as if what the faculty was teaching was irrelevant. Lights were left on in empty overcooled classrooms, recycling bins were nonexistent, lawns were maintained using pesticides and herbicides, diesel trucks spewed fumes as they passed on their way to drop off chlorine-bleached virgin paper. This disconnect was very alarming to me. While it was obvious that universities should play a leading role in teaching and researching sustainability issues, I wondered how it could be possible to make widespread institutional changes to meet the demands of environmental sustainability when it was not even being done in the very university sector where these ideas were being promulgated. If universities would not change, then who can and who will, I wondered? To a growing number of people, the idea of teaching sustainability without demonstrating it is highly problematic. It is also widely believed that the ability of the higher education sector to reform its own practices is an important indicator of humankind?s ability to address the global environmental imperative across all sectors of society. These sentiments have helped fuel what is now referred to as the campus sustainability movement, a movement dedicated to transforming our campuses into living laboratories for the demonstration and practice of environmental sustainability.

Aluminum Production. -By October 1, Aluminum Company of America will restart a 35,000-ton-per-year unit at its aluminum smelter at Rockdale, Tex., restoring that facility to its full capacity of 325,000 tons annually. Primary Ingot Price Increase. -Most U.S. aluminum producers in mid-September were quoting a price of 72 cents per pound for primary aluminum ingot. On September 19, Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. announced that it would increase the price of primary aluminum ingot 4 cents to 76 cents per pound.

Incorporating an iron ore pelletising plant, a MIDREX'"' Direct Reduction Plant, and a mini mill, the conversion of iron ore fines to high- quality steel slabs in Western Australia is among the lowest cost routes in the world. The cost and availability of iron ore and natural gas, government support, and proximity to the growing Southeast Asian market all contribute to the competitive position of the area. Owing to the lead-time required, this is an ideal time to develop a new project to supply semi-finished steel to Asia for rolling to a finished product. A project contracted now will start up in about three years, when the market should have recovered.

"Constrained groove pressing (CGP), as a severe plastic deformation (SPD) technique, is one of the applicable methods for sheet metal forming capable of producing ultra-fine grained materials (UFGMs). In CGP, processing and die design parameters can significantly affect the deformation response of sheet metal specimen. Having said this, in the present research the effects of die design variables and processing parameters (i.e. shear angle and friction) on the deformation behaviour of an Al-Mg-Si Alloy are studied thoroughly. Finite element analysis (FEA), was used to evaluate the effectiveness of mentioned parameters on the deformation homogeneity, strain distribution and pressing load variations. Also, mechanical properties of the deformed sample in term of micro-hardness was analyzed. It is observed that with increasing the shear angle, effective stress, strain and pressing load are enhanced. Moreover, by increasing the coefficient of friction, pressing load enhances. The color coded micro-hardness measurement showed a good agreement with the strain distribution obtained from FEA (higher hardness for the zones associated with higher shear plastic strain values).INTRODUCTIONWork hardening results in enhanced mechanical properties upon cycles of deformation (Hosford & Caddell, 2007). However, the formability of the processed products are affected by work hardening reducing the possibility of processing in subsequent deformation cycles. Therefore, many industrial processes cannot be performed on sheet metals to produce products with desired mechanical and physical properties (Valiev, Islamgaliev, & Alexandrov, 2000). Severe plastic deformation (SPD) is an effective grain refining technique which can impose large plastic strains through cold working on a metallic specimen (Bisadi, Rastgou, Payganeh, Zeynali, & Ghahremani, 2010). SPD techniques are mainly categorized into three types; sheet, bulk and tube forming. Among SPD sheet forming methods, Constrained Groove Pressing (CGP) (Shin, Park, Kim, & Park, 2002), Accumulative Roll Bonding (ARB) (Saito, Tsuji, Utsunomiya, Sakai, & Hong, 1998) and Repetitive Corrugation and Straightening (RCS) (Zhu, Lowe, Jiang, & Huang, 2001) possess potential applications in manufacturing industries."

MOST commercial alloys undergo changes in phase composition after casting. This is a natural result of the fact that the alloys are not in a state of phase equilibrium as cast and phase changes will therefore take place, with more or less rapidity, in an attempt to attain equilibrium. The practical aspect of aging in zinc-alloy die castings concerns the changes in physical properties and in dimensions that may accompany aging phase changes. Harmful alterations have been reduced to a minimum and zinc-alloy die castings are being produced today that are so stable with respect to dimensions and physical properties that they are entirely suitable for most practical purposes1. In the first paper' of this series, and in this paper, aging phase changes of zinc alloy die castings have been investigated and the possible influence of these changes on dimensional changes of the castings has been evalu-ated and compared with the dimensional changes actually experienced. The change of dimensions has been selected for practical comparison in these papers because the effect of phase changes on the dimensions of a casting is directly calculable; from X-ray crystal-analysis data of the phase structure. The die-casting alloys considered contain, in addition to zinc, 4 per cent of aluminum, about 0.03 per cent magnesium, and from 0 to 3 per cent of copper. It was shown in the former paper that the eutectoidal decomposition of the beta aluminum-zinc phase, while intrinsically capable of causing a considerable shrinkage, can have very little effect on the observed shrinkage of die castings because it takes place within a few days of aging, whereas the observed shrinkage continues for five weeks. Two house trailers and a modem modular house, all pillar-supported with cantilevered perimeters, were monitored for structural response to vibrations from surface coal mine blasts. Due to the large blast site distances, peak particle velocities measured in the ground beside the houses did not exceed 0.32 ips, and airblasts did not exceed 106 dB. However, the structures responded significantly to the ground vibrations, with maximum high-comer amplification factors as high as 8.5 in the horizontal directions. Vertical structural responses were as high as 10 times the vertical peak particle velocities in the ground, but appeared to be driven more by horizontal ground motions. No measurable airblast responses were observed. The natural frequencies of the structures ranged from 5 to 10 Hz.

"Microseismic monitoring technology has become one of the most effective method of mine ground pressure monitoring after decades of development. But safety assessment of mine ground pressure by using microseismic monitoring is still in the development stage, it needs to be perfected continuously in practice, and choose the optimal assessment indexes and methods. The definitions and physical meanings of wave velocity, b value, and EI-VA value are introduced in this paper. Statistical calculation of the microseismic events in Luomu Mine is finished by using these indexes, then the functions and calculation results of V, b value, and EI-VA value with the variable of time are also given in the paper. The preliminary safety assessment method is established in Luomu Mine, and it has achieved good results in practical application.1.1 Engineering background The Luomu Mine is a super large molybdenum and tungsten production base in China, ore reserves is up to 2 billion tons, first in Asia and third in the world. It begins mining since the 1960. and bases on underground mining until 2002. In order to recover resources more effectively, it began to use opencast mining method and formed a production of 30000t/d in the early 1990. After about 30 years of underground mining, a large mined out spaces was formed under open pit mine, up to area of 1.2 million m2 and volume of 18 million m3, as shown in figure 1. The large number of mined out spaces seriously affects the normal production, mining and handling of mined out spaces are in the high risk. In the past years, several rock mass collapsions happened, and it caused a serious security threat to persons and equipments. According to the distribution characteristics of mined out spaces, Luomu Mine is divided into A, B, C, D and E mining area. The stability of D mining area is studied in this article. D mining area mainly includes 1376,1350,1340,1317 mined out spaces and 1280 deep large mined out area, as shown in figure 2. The mined out spaces of D mining area is extremely complex and high-risk. Therefore, a microseismic monitoring system was built to monitor the stability of D mining area, a large number of valuable datum has been obtained, and it has a striking effect (Cheng & Peng, 2013; Peng et al., 2013)."

Up until 1990 CoalCorp North Island's accident record was six times that considered acceptable in those NSW operations with good accident prevention programmes. This was an obvious avoidable burden on the company in both human and cost terms.   Late in 1989 an accident prevention programme was implemented with the objective of achieving a 50 per cent reduction in the lost time accident frequency rate within 12 months. The key to achieving this objective was recognised as being an attitude change in the total workforce from General Manager downward. Management commitment and action were seen to be critical to the success of the programme.   Through very basic and simple training programmes in accident investigation, analysis and reporting, communication, on-the-job coaching and in focusing on improving supervision skills, the original objective was achieved.   During 1991 the application of methods improvement and hazard recognition techniques are seen as the logical step to achieving a further 50 per cent reduction in the accident frequency rate.

Devitrification of a glassy volcanic ash equivalent to an alkaline trachyte in composition has resulted in the formation of an interstratified illite-montmorillonite with an 1:1\1 content of 1:4 as the principal clay mineral.A high concentration of potassium ions and a deficiency of magnesium ions favoured the formation of the potassium-bentonite.A poorly ordered mica mineral, equivalent to illite, was produced by weathering of potassic feldspar. The Ivanhoe district, Elko Co., Nevada, is located in the northern part of the Carlin trend of epithermal gold-deposits, but it differs from most mines in the belt in that Ivanhoe epithermal gold ores are found in 14 m.y. old Tertiary volcanic rocks as well as in the better known Paleozoic sediments. Within the Ivanhoe district U.S. Steel (USX Corp.) discovered and partly developed an epithermal gold deposit largely hosted by Tertiary rocks that, with a 167-hole program, was found to contain an open ended probable reserve of 4.0 million tons of heap leachable open pit oxide ore averaging .042 opt Au. An additional 4.0 m.t. of open pit sulfide ore averaging .048 opt Au were also developed. The U.S. Steel orebody was a blind discovery in that it just barely outcropped, and it was found by drilling through a premineral but barren cover of altered Tertiary volcanic rocks.

"Current understanding of the mechanisms by which glassy and crystalline thin ribbons are formed in high speed continuous casting processes is considered. A computer model of the combined heat and momentum transfer during melt spinning has been developed. The influence of roll velocity and of heat transfer coefficient (between the melt and the roll) on the temperature and velocity distributions within the melt puddle is analysed and the thickness of the extracted ribbon computed. The relative importance of heat and momentum transfer under different conditions is assessed and differences between the casting of crystalline and amorphous strip highlighted.IntroductionHigh speed continuous casting of thin metallic ribbon and strip is currently of considerable interest both to metal processers and to those studying process mechanisms. The practical interest arises both from the potential economic benefits to be gained from a shorter and more energy-efficient production route and from the ability to obtain extended and uniform thin strip having a metastable microcrystalline or amorphous structure with enhanced or unique properties. The latter arise from the rapid solidification associated with the cooling of very thin sections of melt brought into intimate thermal contact with one or two rapidly moving heat sinks.The principal processes for casting thin strip include free jet, chill-block melt-spinning (GBMS) (1), melt drag (MD) (2), planar flow casting (PFG) (3) and twin-roll casting (TRG) (4). For the first three of these, all essentially variants of melt-spinning, melt flows through a nozzle onto the circumferential surface of a rapidly rotating roll, whereas for TRG the melt passes into the nip between two contra-rotating rolls. We shall be concerned in this paper with the single-roll melt spinning processes only. For these, a puddle is established where the melt contacts the roll surface and the length of this puddle l is a function of the process conditions, notably the circumferential velocity of the roll Us and the volumetric flow rate of the melt Q. The contact time between any point on the roll surface and this puddle, or residence time eR(= l /Us) determines the thickness of ribbon t extracted from the puddle. This thickness, in turn, partly governs the cooling rate T and the amount of undercooling in the melt and thus the microstructure of the solidified ribbon."

The results of laboratory characterization of tailpipe emissions for three “clean” engines that meet U.S. EPA Tier 4 final emissions standards were used to assess the viability and effectiveness of repowering existing engines and powering new mobile equipment with those engines as a control strategy for reducing exposure of underground miners to diesel aerosol and criteria gases. The evaluated engines were representative of those that achieve the emission standards through implementation of various in-cylinder emissions control strategies, use of crankcase filtration, and use of three types of exhaust aftertreatment systems: (1) diesel oxidation catalytic converter (DOC), (2) combination of DOC and the full-flow wall flow monolith diesel particulate filter (DPF), or (3) combination of DOC, diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) based selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, and ammonia slip catalyst (ASC). The study showed that the highest reductions in concentrations of diesel aerosols in underground workings, in terms of both mass and number, could be achieved if the engines, preferably in all power classes, are fitted with viable DPF systems. The use of U.S. EPA Tier 4 final engines equipped with DOC and DOC/SCR/ASC systems could help operators to considerably reduce mass, but not number concentrations of aerosols. The emissions of two of the evaluated engines, one equipped with DOC and the other equipped with DOC/DPF systems, were characterized by substantial secondary NO2 emissions that would limit the viability of those engines for underground mining applications. It appears that the catalyst formulations used in the exhaust aftertreatment systems of the “clean” engines marketed to the underground mining industry need to be formulated to minimize the potential for generation of secondary NO2 emissions. The results indicate that the engines fitted with viable SCR/ASC systems present a low-NO2 alternative. All three “clean” engines were found to have low CO output. Therefore, due to nuances associated with the use of diesel-powered mobile equipment in underground mines, special attention needs to be paid to the selection and potentially optimization of “clean” engines for underground mining applications.

"SynopsisGibb Consulting Services was contracted by Eskom Line Engineering Services to conduct an investigation to determine the absolute displacement to date and infer the current rate of displacement of unsurveyed colliery backfill.At the test site, where a 400 kV power line is to be constructed, neither the surface nor the backfill material had been monitored and it was not possible to state whether the surface will be subject to future settlement that may compromise surface infrastructure. Therefore indirect methods of estimating current and future displacements needed to be found to act as a proxy for a comprehensive long-term settlement monitoring exercise and provide a reasonable estimate for the settlement that has occurred in the decades of mining.The innovative solution was to recover essentially undisturbed core from backfill using a sonic drill rig and use the measured dry density values from the samples as a proxy for the rate and absolute displacement in the backfill.The success in obtaining an essentially undisturbed backfill core and the clear relationship of the backfill density with age and depth allowed the conclusion to be issued that the power line infrastructure can be constructed over the backfill; with a warning that once the water table recovers after mining ceases some collapse settlement may occur.With this method, the amount of settlement can be predicted and, if proven conclusively, provides a way to confidently release huge areas of currently waste ground for future surface infrastructural development.IntroductionIn coal mining, it is normal mining practice to backfill the newly mined-out voids with the excavated waste rock and soils. As there is no requirement for the mining companies to uniformly compact the spoil or accurately monitor surface or inter-backfill displacement, these backfilled voids are prone to differential compaction and consolidation settlement. They are therefore avoided as sites for future surface infrastructure work, especially for linear structures such as roads, railways, and power lines."

Ventilation survey using tracer gas measurement is one of the techniques for mine ventilation design, monitoring and investigation of movement of fresh air and contaminants. However, there has been little research into using both tracer gas monitoring and numerical simulation. In this research, tracer gas technique was used for quantitative assessment of airflows through narrow vein shrinkage stopes with various opening shapes and friction factors. SF6 was used as a tracer gas to monitor airflow through three narrow vein shrinkage stopes in order to obtain diffusion concentration curves against elapsed time. The mine ventilation simulator, MIVENA Ver.6, was used to construct the entire ventilation network of the mine to monitor airflows through the stopes. The diffusion concentration curves against elapsed time were simulated with a numerical model. The result shows that the concentration-time curve is unsymmetrical and is skewed to the front of the flow direction. From the results of history-matching between the measured and the simulated curves, volume flow rates of airways and stopes were evaluated. Importantly, the tailing effect of the concentration-time curve between the measured and simulated is greatly improved by reconstructing an equivalent airflow route to represent unused mine openings, dead end drives and other open spaces. Finally, it can be concluded that openings, dead end drives and other open spaces have no relation on flow rates, but affect the airflow quality provided from the inlet portal as shown by tracer gas diffusion characteristics.

The separation performance of a raw coal sample from South Africa based on the dense gas-solid fluidized bed beneficiation technique was investigated. Analysis showed that the raw coal sample distributes mainly in the -50+6 mm size range with the -1.6 g/cm3 density fraction accounting for 78.20% of the cumulative mass distribution. A flow sheet of the sequential coal beneficiation technique was introduced. The experimental and simulation results of the hydromechanical and density distribution stability indicate that the dense gas-solid fluidized bed could provide a stable separation environment with uniform density fluctuations under suitable operating conditions. With the application of this technique on the raw coal sample, the separation results show that three products, consisting of 73.25% clean coal with an ash content of 9.59%, 11.31% middlings, and 15.44% gangue were effectively separated at two different densities of 1.82 g/cm3 and 1.57 g/cm3. This study provides an effective flow sheet for achieving the high-efficiency separation performance on raw coal from arid areas. The first mention of gold in Western Australia was in 1848 when some specimens of copper ore, which are believed to have come from the Murchison district, were sent to Adelaide for assay. Gold was present in these specimens, but no particular interest seemed to be attached to this fact as the search at that time was mainly concentrated on base metals and coal. Interest appeared to be shown in gold in 1852 when several parties moved out eastwards from York looking for goldbearing country. Though these parties inmany cases were very near to what is now known as the Yilgarn Goldfield, nothing was found.The next record of gold was reported in some specimens which were brought in from Cardup, some 25 miles from Fremantle. Though this area was investigated, it would appear that all the gold had been contained in the specimens and nothing further was found, though the report had been the cause of a small rush of people interested in gold.From time to time specimens had been brought in by various people from the district east of Northam, and in 1861 a reward emanating from private sources was offered for the finding of gold within a radius of 150 miles from Perth. The Government at this stage took an interest in exploration for gold and in the same year supplemented this privately offered reward on a £ for £ basis. The Government also, about this time, commissioned a practical miner, with prospecting experience in the Eastern States, to examine the country between Albany and Northam with a view to the possible existence of goldbearing veins in that area. The development and status of technology for producing titanium from U.S. resource materials are summarized in this Bureau of Mines report. Commercially feasible processes and investigations of alternative procedures are reviewed in order to identify techniques that could make existing operations more effective or areas in which future research may lead to the development of new production methods. Procedures are described for producing concentrated titanium dioxide from starting materials such as sands, massive deposits, and mineral processing residues containing rutile, ilmenite, and perovskite; producing and purifying titanium tetrachloride from concentrated rutile, ilmenite, and titaniferous slags; reduction of titanium tetrachloride to titanium sponge metal using metallic magnesium or sodium; purifying and consolidating titanium sponge and scrap by arc melting or induction melting techniques; purifying sponge, scrap, and alloys by molten salt electrorefining; and electrowinning titanium from chloride salts.

I shall rapidly read their names, but they must all feel assured that they are very welcome here today. To one and all, ladies and gentlemen, a hearty word of welcome. Not last on our list, a word of welcome to Mr Eric Boden, the Manager of A.S. and T.S. We also have with us I trust, Dr Deist, and his good lady-Dr Deist will be figuring in our proceedings later this afternoon. Also Mr Barcza and Mrs Barcza. Mr Bareza, a former President of the Institute, also has a task to perform. Then, I hope two of our student prize winners are here-Mr Beetge and Mr Painting. Then we also have Mr Roberts, who is welcome in his capacity as co-author with Dr Deist. Then, last of all, a hearty word of welcome to Dr Helen Glen (I am not sure whether she has arrived yet, but she is certainly due to come)-the new Honorary Editor of the Institute's Journal.
