Drill cores from Section 62, New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd., were used to study the petrology of rocks associated with the zinc lode. The distribution of the rock types in relation to the lode structure was determined. The distribution of the gahnite-bearing rocks was shown to be only partly conformable with the structure.It was concluded that large scale metasomatism was not widespread, that the rocks associated with the lode (except, perhaps, the quartz-gahnite-garnet rocks) were formed by metamorphism of sediments, and that rocks and lode were contemporaneously metamorphosed.INTRODUCTIONThis investigation was undertaken in order to study the rock types associated with the zinc lode of the Broken Hill orebody, and their relationship to the structure of the ore horizons. The work was confined almost entirely to the laboratory, and is therefore limited in its scope. It is hoped, however, that the information gained may throw some new light on the genesis of the lode.Certain inferences which are drawn from this work are at variance with the ideas of a number of earlier workers.In particular, the idea of large scale metasomatism developing many of the rocks associated with the lode, especially those containing manganese, is questioned. On the contrary, the rocks associated with the lode are more simply explained as highly metamorphosed sediments, in some cases modified by water introduced from surrounding rocks into zones of strong folding and faulting. The silver deposits of Rockvale near Armidale, N.S.W., occur in fissure veins in epi-Permian granite. The ore is fine grained, mineralogically complex, and contains twenty-seven different minerals including eleven silver minerals. The ore is characterized by a unique multiple unmixing from a sphalerite solvent. The following minerals have exsolved from solid solution in sphalerite: pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, cubanite I, cubanite II (chalcopyrrhotite), valleriite, "brown" stannite, "olive" stannite, argentian tetrahedrite, pyrargyrite, and an unknown grey-white mineral. Several of these minerals derive from a second-stage unmixing, the immediate solvents of which are the products of earlier exsolutions.INTRODUCTIONSmall silver-rich base metal deposits occur at several localities near Armidale in the New England district of New South Wales. Chief among these are the Tulloch Mine and the Rockvale Mine at Rockvale, 27 miles SE. of Armidale, and the Tait's Gulley deposits some 15 miles NE. of Armidale.At Rockvale (Kenny, 1928), irregular lenses of lode material, principally quartz and calcite, occur along a zone of shearing in biotite granite and altered sediments. The orebodies had a maximum width of 6 ft but averaged 2 ft 6 in. The largest lens was 150 ft long and 50 ft high. The Rockvale deposits were worked for both arsenic and silver; 2,897 tons of arsenic were produced but no figures are available forsilver.Little is known of the Tait's Gulley deposits which occur in folded arenites containing small but rich veins of pyrargyrite with base metal sulphides.The sediments in these localities are possibly Silurian.

Australia is not capitalizing on the raw gems and precious minerals that it produces in abundance. In particular, there is an unrealised value for diamonds due to lack of processing after mining. Australia could enhance the value of its raw jewellery products by developing and integrated jewellery industry. For instance, initiation of a diamond industry would require training programmes to educate people in the requisite skills, such as diamond sorting, cleaving, sawing, bruting and polishing. Equally important would be the training of people in design jewellery, manufacturing, and appropriate diamond grading and sales techniques. Future technological advances in diamond processing will decide where the major diamond processing centres of the world will be. Australia, for a relatively small investment, could develop a highly productive diamond processing capacity using the new technology available. Australia's geographical position, and advanced banking and communication facilities provide the potential for this country to become a major trading centre for diamonds. "Some sulphide mineral mixtures when exposed to air and a warm and humid environment can exhibit a self-generating temperature rise, referred to as self-heating or spontaneous heating. The observed self-heating derives from the oxidation reactions of the active sulphides. In previous publications by the authors, it was proposed that the self-heating of sulphides proceed in three distinct stages; namely, Stage A, Stage B and Stage C. In Stage A (<100OC) the sulphides, in the presence of moisture are oxidized, generating heat through a series of sequential reactions and forming elemental sulphur as one of the products. In Stage B (>100OC) the elemental sulphur produced in Stage A is further oxidized to generate additional heat and SO2. Stage C (>~380OC), sometimes referred to as thermal runaway or roasting, is not addressed in this paper. This communication focuses on the type and role of elemental sulphur found in Stages A and B, and the sequence of reactions that is occurring in Stage A. The sequence is divided into two phases, the first based on galvanic interaction between the sulphide minerals that generates an acidic environment but little heat, and the second involving the production of H2S which rapidly oxidizes to produce heat and elemental sulphur. To date, data suggest that the primary oxidation product formed in Stage A is the stable orthorhombic a-S8 form of elemental sulphur. Above 96OC the a-S8 transforms to a monoclinic ß-S8 structure which is less stable and will readily oxidize to generate heat and SO2. Above 159OC a proportion of the ß-S8 sulphur will transition to a polymeric Sµ form of sulphur which can readily volatilize. INTRODUCTION Some particulate and granular materials, when exposed to appropriate atmospheric and physical conditions, can exhibit a self-induced temperature rise resulting from accumulated heat due to internal exothermic oxidation reactions. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as self-heating or spontaneous heating. Under favorable physical and environmental conditions, these reactions can elevate the temperature of a given material from ambient to the point of auto-ignition. Self-heating behaviour should not be equated to pyrophoric behaviour which describes a group of materials (e.g. certain finely powdered metals) that will ignite spontaneously in air below 55OC. There are numerous materials such as coals, hay, forestry wood products, food products to name a few that can exhibit self-heating behaviour. This publication continues the focus of the authors on the self-heating of sulphide mineral mixtures. Many of the metals of commercial use found in nature are in the form of these sulphides which must be mined, crushed, ground and concentrated prior to smelting or hydrometallurgical processing in order to produce primary metal. The issues of sulphide self-heating therefore pertain to the mining and processing of metals."

A way back in 1851-2 an army of diggers had commenced the conquest, of the now famous goldfields of Australasia. At that time, and in the Colony of Victoria, more that 10,000 were camped on and around the slopes of the silurian ridges over which Ballarat East h&apos;as been built. A wonderfully rich golden harvest was soon gathered from the alluvial found high on these slopes, and from runs (or gutters) which got their rise on them, and were traced down gullies into a broad valley. In due course it was ascertained that the valley carried a main gutter which represented the unity of the higher ones, and further explorations proved this gutter to have a westerly and then a southerly trend toward and under a basaltic plateau, on the top ofwhich Ballarat West and Sebastopol now stand. In the records of alluvial gold mining all the world over the Ballarat field can be classed amongst the richest. Gold in pieces the size of beans, in, stringy filigree bits, in dust and in solid lumps (the largest of which weighed more than 2,200 ozs.), was obtained in the comparatively shallow ground on the slopes; and speaking generally, great and uniform richness was met with along a belt of country on which, in a north and south line, the present quartz mines of Ballarat East are at work. It was noticed by the diggers that when the gutters crossed the upturned edges of the ,strata, the gold deposits in them were patchy, and that when they trended north and south on this beltthey carried rich deposits for longer distances. In time it was also noticf!d that a class of stringy, irregular shaped quartz occurrences, in a bottom of soft slates, in the, immediate vicinity of tpe g)ltter, meant greater richness, and (in the aIluvial) on the higher ground slabs of quartz would now and then be met with, in which strings and spongy masses of gold were found. As the shallow alluvial became worked out the diggers turned their attention to the quartz occurrences, and, now and again the striking of a flat make of a very golden nature would cause quite a stir in the local mining world.

"Physical as well as mathematical modeling was carried out to investigate the exothermic mass transfer in liquid metal systems. In these systems, the exothermicity induces unique heat, mass and momentum transfer phenomena. Moreover, these phenomena are deeply coupled and they are further complicated by the presence of a moving boundary.In the physical model used, ice cylinders were immersed into sulfuric acid solutions, because the intermixing of ice with sulfuric acid is very exothermic. In this low temperature system, velocity and temperature measurements in the sulfuric acid were made as well as measurements of the ice melting in the sulfuric acid.The mathematical model developed solved simultaneously the heat, mass and momentum equations numerically, utilizing the control-volume finite difference approach. The enthalpy method was adopted to track the moving boundary. Predictions made by the mathematical model were in close agreement with the results obtained by the physical model.The results from the mathematical model were further validated with experiments involving high temperature liquid metals. Specifically, data were obtained in an experimental setup involving (a) dipping silicon cylinders into high carbon liquid iron and (b) dipping nickel cylinders into liquid aluminum. Results from these experimental studies supported the predictions of the mathematical model."

BATMINÖ, BATMINEÖ, BATMINDÖ are an abbreviation for Business Analysis Tools for Mining, Mine Evaluation and Mine Design respectively. BATMINP are proprietary tools customised to suit individual client requirements. The first suite of tools provides for analysis and evaluation of open pit mining equipment alternatives and includes fleet selection, fleet sizing and production, productivity and economic outcomes. The models address all mine process activities including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling and auxiliary services. All models are built to provide for simultaneous evaluation of multiple alternatives that are time and condition related. Provision is made for modelling from first principles and/or default or shortcut inputs. Sensitivities to key input parameters are easily performed and consistent logic is applied throughout the process. The models are built to provide key outputs in a format suitable for presentation and documentation. Provision is also made in the models for validation of both inputs and outputs through benchmarking, back analysis and budget comparison. The same models can be used for short interval (12 month) planning and control, medium-term (three to five years) and long-term life-of-mine (LOM) planning. Millions of dollars are spent each year on mining plant and equipment. Decisions that impact on the medium and long-term are made. BATMINP tools have been used to perform studies with good results and in most cases the studies have been validated through back analysis and comparing model outcomes to real data.

"Mining environments, whether open-pit or underground, pose difficult conditions for any sensor system. However, the ever-increasing need for automation requires the application and use of sensor systems in order to gather relevant information required for process automation. Ultra-Wideband radio (UWB) is a robust technology well-suited for underground applications. These applications include positioning and communication. This paper introduces UWB and presents results from measurement campaigns in harsh environments. Using filtering and sensor fusion precise and robust positioning can be achieved even in confinements of underground mining environments. INTRODUCTION Indoor positioning systems (IPS) are gaining ever more importance. Especially in light of ongoing efforts to reach the goals of what was coined as Industry 4.0 by the German government, the development of IPS is inevitable. According to a recent report about the “Global Indoor Location Market Outlook 2019” a growth from $ 597 million in 2014 to $ 3961.8 million by 2019 is expected [1]. Hence, there is also an economic incentive to pursue this topic. The mining industry is profiting from this development as well, since IPS are the basis for the automation of especially mobile mining equipment. Ideally, indoor positioning systems offer to position the equipment continuously and, what’s more, even in real-time [2]. Different approaches are available for IPS. The difference of these systems lie in terms of accuracy, cost, precision, technology, scalability, robustness and security. [3] At the Institute of Advanced Mining Technologies (AMT) of RWTH Aachen University, research suggests that one of the more auspicious approaches for IPS in the mining sector is the employment of ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology. Because of this, there has been ongoing research into the best way to introduce UWB technology for the application in underground environments. The research started with an indoor positioning application, which only consisted of the UWB system. In the course of this, different algorithms were developed to enhance the system’s performance for the use in the mining industry. This led to the idea of sensor fusion in which the information of the UWB system are combined with infrastructure-independent technologies like inertial navigation systems (INS) and image-based technologies."

Haul roads are often permanent unsealed access roads used by heavy haul trucks to transfer minerals. These roads can deteriorate rapidly which results in potholes, deformations and dust. Downer EDI Works has successfully provided efficient solutions to the mining industry to maintain their haul roads. HaulPac as a solution package is a process in which a bituminous emulsion is used to create a stable and durable pavement. The emulsion penetrates the road and binds the particles together, creating a stable base. It also seals the surface and prevents water from penetrating the underneath layers. Bituminous emulsion can increase the strength of the pavement material and decrease the road surface degradation which results in dust suppression. However, the everincreasing price of commodities, the necessity of reducing carbon emissions and the increasing use of autonomous haul trucks have made it vital to invest in novel maintenance solutions that can meet the needs of the mining industry in a cost-effective manner. This paper outlines the benefits of bituminous emulsion in terms of productivity, safety and environment followed by Downer’s approach to evaluate the suitability and to optimise the amount of product. The potential for changing the colour of the treated surface is explored and an initiative that incorporates end-of-life tyres of haul trucks into the pavement is introduced. And finally, an innovative method using artificial intelligence to estimate dust emission is presented.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an increasingly popular method for generating and managing facility information during the life cycle of a building, ranging from facility conceptualization, through design, construction and its operational life. Organizations involved in Facility Management (FM) have the opportunity to use BIM as a knowledge repository to document evolving facility information and to support decisions made by the facility managers during the operational life of a facility. This paper demonstrates the potential of using BIM to develop algorithms that automate decision making for FM applications. The potential of utilizing BIM as an analysis tool is demonstrated through the scenario of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system failure in an operating facility. In case of a typical HVAC malfunction today, facility occupants record complaints in a ticketing database maintained by the FM organization. Upon receiving notification of HVAC system failure, facility inspectors visit the location to confirm the reported failure. Upon confirmation, facility managers review building plans and specifications to develop a detailed plan of action to repair any HVAC components suspected of damage. Based on the plan of action, inspectors visit the facility to inspect and, in case of damage, repair the appropriate HVAC system components. These FM practices ? as currently implemented across the industry ? are labor intensive, time consuming, and often rely on unreliable and outdated information. To address these shortcomings, the authors propose an alternative methodology of HVAC fault detection in operational buildings. The authors implement an algorithm that leverages complaint ticket data and automates BIM to determine potentially damaged HVAC system components. Based on the list of HVAC components suspected of damage, the algorithm develops a plan of action for the facility inspectors. Finally, the authors discuss the advantages of the proposed method as well as the challenges of implementing automated BIM-enabled decision making processes in the FM industry.

SOME notes on the works of the Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia will no doubt be of interest to members of the Institute, more especially as much of the work is new to Australasia. As many of the members who may read this paper have not been in a position to visit works of this kind, and are consequently not thoroughly acquainted with all the operations carried on, the author has taken the liberty, in some cases, to enter into explanation which would otherwise be unnecessary. The works are situated at Port Kembla (New South Wales), about fifty miles south of Sydney, and are approachable both by rail and water. The Government has recently built a low-level jetty upwards of five hundred feet long, and intends installing at an early date an electrically operated portable crane to facilitate the handling of material to and from the boats. This will mean: a considerable reduction in the length of time that boats are laid up at the jetty. There are also under construction two breakwaters, which, when complete, will materially assist shipping operation...

As continual complementary metal?oxide?semiconductor (CMOS) scaling requirements, metal gate/high-k dielectric/Si gate stacks are expected to replace poly-Si/SiO2/Si gate stacks in the future CMOS sub-45 nm technology node. Hafnium based oxide is a promising candidate to replace SiO2 as a gate dielectric, due to its much higher dielectric constant (high-k) and stability. The key challenges of successfully adopting the high-k dielectric/Si gate stack into advanced CMOS technology mostly come from the interfacial properties. The origins of the electrical and physical characteristics of the dielectric oxide/bulk interface were studied in detail. The leakage current density-voltage (J-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurement techniques were employed to study the dielectric oxide/Si interface. The effects of the post-deposition annealing (PDA) treatment on the interface charges of dielectric oxides were studied. We found that the PDA can effectively reduce the trapping density and leakage current, and eliminate hysteresis in the C?V curves. Besides, the changes in chemical bonding features at HfO2/Si, HfSiO/Si and HfSiON/Si interfaces due to PDA treatment were evaluated by XPS measurements. The XPS analysis provides a better interpretation of the electrical outcomes. As a result, both HfSiO and HfSiON films have exhibited superior performance in terms of thermal stability and electrical characteristics.

Two exploratory gasification tests of limited duration were made at Dorsten, Germany, with strongly coking Pittsburgh-bed coal in a fixed-bed pressure gasifier. To reduce the coking potential of the Arkwright coal, ash refuse from the gasification of Dorsten (Leopold) coal was added to pre-pare coal-ash mixtures which contained nominal 20 and 30 percent ash. Major adjustments in principal process variables at the beginning of the tests resulted in wide fluctuations in the rate of gas production, gas offtake temperature, and carbon dioxide concentration in the gas. Because a higher steam-to-oxygen ratio was used in the tests than was customarily employed for routine operation, gas production was lower, and steam and oxygen consumption was higher. After operating conditions had been improved, the results of a 12~-hour-long test with addition of sufficient ash refuse to obtain a nominal 30 percent ash concentration indicated that operation is feasible with this coal mixture using a fixed-bed pressure gasifier equipped with a rotating coal distributor and stirrer.

When the opportunity to revisit the region was offered in 1929, as a result of a cooperative agreement between the State Mining Board of Oregon and the United States Geological Survey, it seemed advisable to pay particular attention to this feature of the lodes, in the hope that if the idea of zonal relations was confirmed it might serve as a guide in exploitation.

This report on the state of the art of horizontal boring technology for underground power transmission installations was prepared by the Bureau of Mines at the request of the Department of the Interior. This paper describes the different machines and methods used in augering, impacting, pushing, drilling, and machine tunneling horizontal holes through soil and rock. A review of the borehole survey and guidance tools and techniques applicable to these methods is also given. Nonboring methods used for emplacement of power distribution and transmission lines are briefly discussed. The paper ends with a brief technical forecast, an analytical summary of the state of the art, and recommendations based on power industry needs. Horizontal boring techniques for power distribution lines installation are adequate to meet the requirements of the power industry, particularly where such burial involves relatively short distances in soil or soft rock. For burying power transmission lines, particularly in the harder rocks and over relatively long distances, horizontal boring methods are not as well advanced. Research and development as well as economic incentives to equipment manufacturers could substantially improve the state of the art. Obstacle detection and guidance systems for directing boreholes to specified targets need major improvements to meet the requirements of the power industry for underground burial of distribution and transmission lines

Following a decline in direct and indirect employment in the minerals industry between 2000 and 2003, the situation reversed in 2004 and employment rose by 12 per cent. Furthermore, there are forecasts of continuing employment growth in the minerals industry in the immediate future. For those of us charged with promoting the virtues of a career in the minerals industry this is encouraging news, as it provides us with the evidence to promote the increasing employment opportunities of a healthy and vibrant industry. However, for many others û particularly the employers in this industry û the news is not so rosy. The jobs are there, and in increasing numbers, but the workers arenÆt! Employers right across the industry are finding it increasingly difficult to fill vacancies with suitably qualified and skilled employees and the competition is becoming fiercer. In the minerals and energy sector, questions are being asked and solutions sought on the industryÆs ability to attract and retain a skilled workforce. From many quarters û industry, government and the education sector, calls for urgent action are becoming louder. The reasons for this are well known û the nature of the work, the remote location, perceptions of the industry, an aging workforce, the gender imbalance, the shrinking demographic of school leavers. It is the latter I wish to focus on û the Generation Y demographic û those who have recently left school, those who are in higher education or have recently entered the workforce, or those who are still at secondary school. These young people are the next cohort of potential employees for the industry. But our need for them appears to be greater that their perceived need for us! How do we engage them so they are informed about the industry? How do we inform and advise them so they are prepared to consider further education and training in disciplines and skill areas relating to our industry? How do we guide and motivate them to give it their best shot and work in it û at least for part of their working life? These are fundamental questions that many within the industry have been grappling with for quite some time. Let me share with you some of the strategies that the Minerals Council is implementing to address this issue.

The augered cast-in-place pile system came into use in the late 1940&apos;s where various techniques were tried using pressure grouting methods. In the early development stages some piles were installed using the preplaced aggregate concrete system. As development continued it became more apparent that placement of coarse aggregate was more costly than making a pile out of a cement and sand mixture only. Various techniques were tried consisting of pumping structural grout into an open hole through a pipe left in the bottom of the hole, drilling or driving a pipe in close proximity to the tip elevation of the auger or in working a pipe down adjacent to the auger fluting. For these techniques the pipe was usually withdrawn after grout appeared at the surface. In 1951 a patent was applied for by Raymond Patterson describing the above techniques along with a technique for placement of grout using a hollow stem auger and a removable plug or lead bit at the tip of the auger. The plug or lead bit was removed by grout pressure and this would be an expendable item for each pile placed. The patent was granted in 1956 and patent rights were assigned to Intrusion-Prepakt, Inc. Shortly thereafter other contractors were granted licenses to utilize the system. Patent coverage expired in 1973 and this method now is in the public domain. Today the method is in wide use throughout the world and is particularly well accepted in Japan and England.

Experimental results are presented for the anode overvoltage as a function of current density for different alumina concentrations in an alumina reduction cell. Voltage changes due to the electrolyte resistance and also the decomposition voltage, have been evaluated as a function of alumina concentration and anode current density. From these values of voltage, changes in the total cell voltage have been derived for changes in alumina concentration for different anode current densities. The results show that for each operating current density there exists a discrete alumina concentration that defines a minimum reduction cell voltage.
