Entre los criterios de seguridad tenemos: confiabilidad, menor riesgo de detonación prematura, conexión simple y racional, calidad pareja y la adaptación a explosivos disponibles, máquinas de voladura, como de los requisitos del mercado con referencia al tipo de trabajos, profundidades de taladro, etc.

"The formation of ultrafine ferrite by strain induced transformation is assessed using rolling and hot torsion experiments. These experiments are used to examine the impact of thermomechanical processing conditions and steel chemistry on strain induced austenite to ferrite transformation and the formation of ultrafine ferrite. The critical strain for dynamic strain induced transformation increased with increasing carbon equivalence, deformation temperature and austenite grain size. The deformation structure in the austenite grains changes with the thermomechanical processing conditions.Drawing on these results and the current literature, the important factors for the production of ultrafine ferrite are described and a mechanism proposed."

Most of the papers designated as being within the topic of underground storage at this Symposium are concerned with aspects of radioactive waste isolation. Although this is, unquestionably, an important international application of underground storage, and one involving a considerable number of research investigations, the subject of underground storage is indeed much broader. Several major international conferences have been devoted exclusively to it. Applications include storage, under a range of temperatures and pressures, of oil and liquefied petroleum products, compressed air, heat, foodstuffs of various kinds, hazardous and 'nuisance' industrial by-products, and a variety of special applications, both civilian and military - some in use, others proposed. Storage may be in caverns excavated specifically for the purpose, exhausted mines may be adapted for storage or, in some cases, the material to be stored may be injected under pressure into the pore spaces of porous-permeable formations at depth. A variety of rock types and geological environments are used, e.g. excavations in salted or domal salt, where long-term creep closure of the openings is a concern; massive granite, where fluid loss through fissures may be important. Cavities may have spans of several tens of meters, and there is interest in achieving still larger excavations. As would be expected, this breadth of underground storage applications introduces a similarly broad range of questions in rock mechanics and rock engineering. The report will review these questions and recent developments in rock mechanics research, computational procedures, and design applications - and will also discuss the opportunities for a still greater range of applications of underground storage to current industrial and social problems.

The Belizean economy had an estimated annual growth of about 3.4% over that of 1986. Economic growth during the 2 previous years was slower and was characterized by a negative trade balance. The gross domestic product (GDP) was an estimated $200 millioni2 in current dollars. Limited natural resources and scarce finances continued to make the Government's task a difficult one. Belize and China signed an economic cooperation agreement in April under which the Chinese Government is to provide technical assistance, a cash grant of $60.000, and a long-term, interest-free loan of approximately $1.5 million. In May, it was reported that gold was discovered in a remote area of the Maya Mountains in western Belize. An estimated unassayed value of $400 million has been placed on the deposit by one of its discoverers. However, the government in Belmopan has played down the discovery. Two U.S. oil companies. Seahawk Oil International of California and Alston Oil Co. of Texas, were granted licenses to explore for oil. Seahawk Oil will explore a large area of the Orange and Corozal Districts, while Alston Oil will prospect a 90,000-acre area of the western Cayo District. Another U.S. oil company, Pecten Oil Co., recently completed seismic studies off-shore of Belize City. Pecten Oil has made plans to start drilling in 1988.

Smelter operating and environmental requirements demand high on-stream time (high reliability) from the primary smelter sulfur retention device - the sulfuric ?acid plant. The key to reliable smelter sulfuric acid plant operation is the gas cooling and cleaning system. Problems in the gas cleaning system cause corrosion, plugging, equipment failure, etc - plant down time, in the contact section of the plant. The last fifteen years have seen major changes in gas cleaning system design _to the current standard of brick lined venturi scrubber, packed gas cooling tower with plate type liquor coolers and lead or plastic tube precipitators, The current? design offers improved' impurity scrubbing along with increased reliability. in addition, a number of alternate gas cleaning systems have been offered Chemetica LAB System; Monsanto DuPont D:Jna-Wave Syatem1 Lurgi venturi scrubber with lead star gas cooler. This paper will review the design and operating advantages, disadvantages, and risk of the standard gas cleaning system and compare it to the alternate systems. _

Dada que la cantidad de energía utilizada en el proceso de conminución equivale al 3% de la energía mundial, es necesario buscar un proceso de mejora y no limitarse a la ineficiencia de las tecnologías convencionales de molienda SAG y bolas puesto que utilizan para el proceso de molienda entre 3 a 5% del total de la energía consumida. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la optimización del consumo de energía en dicho proceso, de forma que mediante el uso de métodos discretos, se pueda determinar la óptima trayectoria de la carga moledora y así mejorar la eficiencia de la molienda.

On April 26, 1949, the Bureau first approved a machine designed to replace the cycle of cutting, blasting, and loading coal by a single operation. This machine took the coal directly from the solid face and delivered it to transportation equipment. By January 1, 1955, 30 approvals for designs of machines of this type had been granted by the Bureau. In the main, this paper describes briefly the action of the various designs approved as permissible. In addition, the approval number, the date of approval, the voltage of the power supply, the number and character of the explosion-proof accessory parts, the size of the trailing cable, and the overcurrent protection at the outby end of the trailing cable are given for each design. Since no similar information has been published by the Bureau, it is hoped the material in this paper will be valuable in giving the mining public an organized look at the various machines of this nature that have been approved as permissible by the Bureau.

El proceso de lixiviación empleando cianuro en medio alcalino como agente lixiviante, se ha constituido como la práctica universal para la extracción de los metales preciosos, desde que J.S. MacArthur y los hermanos R. y W. Forrest, patentaron la técnica en 1889. La cianuración es un proceso hidrometalúrgico basado en la utilización de soluciones de cianuros alcalinos como medio químico para lixiviar el oro y la plata contenidos en menas auríferas/argentíferas. Los cianuros más importantes que se usan en este procedimiento son el de potasio y el de sodio. El presente documento detalla las pruebas de lixiviación con un reactivo alterno al cianuro de sodio considerando las diversas características mineralógicas del mineral que se procesa en la Planta.

O Alto-Forno 3 da CSN, Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional, iniciou-se sua 3ª campanha no dia 07/08/2001. Chama-se cadinho à região localizada na base do alto-forno cuja finalidade é armazenar, por um período de tempo controlado, o ferro-gusa e a escória. Esta região é altamente crítica para a operação do equipamento, pois o contato permanente do fluxo de ferro-gusa líquido torna esta área altamente suscetível a desgastes. A construção do cadinho é realizada de modo a minimizar este efeito, utilizando-se blocos de carbono de alta resistência em suas paredes internas. Assim, o cadinho determina a vida útil de um alto-forno. A preservação do desgaste dos blocos do cadinho com titânio é de vital importância, visto que, existem diversos riscos da não monitoração, tais como: identificação de possíveis pontos quentes, desgaste acentuado dos blocos de carbono, por temperatura elevada, rompimento do cadinho com vazamento de gusa líquido com conseqüente risco de atingir pessoas e grandes danos ao equipamento e parada operacional do Alto-forno 3 por longo período. O sistema de injeção de titânio possibilita a mitigação dos pontos quente preservando o cadinho e estendendo a campanha do Alto-forno. O sistema de injeção de titânio mostrou sua funcionalidade e aplicação na injeção de llmenita, pó de coletor, plástico e outros sólidos granulados injetados nas ventaneiras do Alto-Forno 3, através de um novo sistema de automação, incluindo: PLC, balança de pesagem, novas malhas de controle inéditas. Trata-se de um processo inédito nas Américas. Com este desenvolvimento, a vida útil do cadinho do Alto-Forno 3 poderá ser expandida elevando sua atual campanha para mais que 20 anos.

La implementación de un proceso de Seguridad Basado en el Comportamiento (SBC) comenzó en junio de 2015 a través de las tres Unidades Económicas Administrativas (UEA´s) de Southern Peru Copper Corporation, la mayor empresa minera de cobre del Perú. Estas UEA´s incluyen actividades de trabajo a lo largo de todo el proceso de producción: minas a cielo abierto, plantas concentradoras y lixiviación, fundición, refinería y puerto. Más de 5.000 empleados participaron simultáneamente en la implementación. Se proporcionará una descripción del proceso de planificación, tanto a nivel corporativo como local, así como detalles de las actividades de capacitación y despliegue.

El presente texto señala los beneficios en el control de operaciones de la concentradora de Toquepala. Entre los principales tenemos: la reducción de costos de producción por concepto de menor consumo de insumos, un mayor control de la planta a través de nuevos indicadores de gestión, se mejora la migración de información de planta al sistema SIC y se desarrolla la confiabilidad en la información contenida y proporcionada por SIC. Asímismo, la información contenida en el sistema permite obtener respuestas de mejora más rápidas al Departamento de metalurgia y operaciones.

Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority is currently undertaking the first Phase of Metro?s Extension to Northern Virginia. A wide range of tunnel options was considered for the Tysons Corner segment that involves about 20,000 feet of track and four stations. After consideration of many options that involved EPBM single track tunnels, NATM tunnels and large bore tunnel concepts for the entire Tysons alignment, the design now being progressed into construction involves two 520 meter (1,700 feet) long soft ground NATM tunnels with several hundred feet of cut-and-cover construction. The paper discusses the process that led to selection of the short NATM tunnels as the most feasible of the options considered for Tysons.

In April, 1873, No. 2 furnace at the Glendon Iron Works being out of blast, it was decided to alter it from an open to a closed top. The three side flues, through which a part of the gas was formerly taken off, were 15 feet below the top, and as, for various reasons, it was not convenient to cut new flues through the brickwork at the top, as is commonly done with closed-top furnaces, a modification of Coingt's charger was employed. This apparatus, as figured by De Vathaire,* consists of a cup or hopper, like that used with the cup and cone, and a central pipe for taking off the gas, which descends some distance into the furnace, and has a projection around it forming a seat for a ring of a triangular cross-section, which closes the opening between the cup and the central gas-pipe. The charge is put into the cup, and by lowering the ring, is thrown into the furnace, a part going outside of the ring toward the walls, and a part through the inside toward the gas-pipe. In this form the apparatus was not applicable, for: 1st. With a gas-pipe three feet in diameter, in a top eight feet in diameter, the openings left by lowering the ring would not be large enough to let lump coal pass through. 2d. For the charger to shut tight, the ring must bear equally against the projection made for it on the gas-pipe, and against the edge of the cup. This would not be difficult to effect when the apparatus is first put up, but a comparatively small change in the relative position of the parts, such as is almost certain to occur from expansion, would cause the ring to touch the pipe or the cup, whichever happened to be the lower, first, and leave a leak between it (the ring) and the other. In the plan adopted (Figs. 5 and 6, Plate I), the central opening in the ring is closed by the bottom of the gas-pipe, whereby more room is left for the passage of the stock when the charger is open, than if the pipe descended into the furnace; and the pipe, instead of being rigidly supported, rests on the ring, when the charger is closed, and follows it for two or three inches as it opens, until stopped by the counter-balance lever C. When the ring is raised to close the furnace top, it comes in contact first with the bottom edge of the gas-pipe, then both are raised together, until stopped by the ring touching the edge of the cup. In this way a good joint is made at both places.

O cenário tecnológico brasileiro passa por transformações profundas, a indústria em geral faz parte desse panorama, dentro dos segmentos indústrias temos a automobilística, onde novas tecnologias são apresentadas e as demais aprimoradas, nesse segmento temos as ligas não ferrosas de alumínio, que com adição de elementos de liga se transformam em ligas de alta performance, assim como as ligas de aços. Elementos de maquinas de ligas de alumínio sofrem modificações em suas propriedades mecânicas com a variação de temperaturas, deformação, composição química entre outras. O presente trabalho objetiva a comparação das propriedades mecânicas dos resultados experimentais da liga Al-0,05%Cu-[0,35-0,45] %Fe-0,22%Zr e de simulações computacionais de chapas para aplicação na indústria automotiva. A liga foi obtida a partir do Al-EC modificado por inserções de ferro na faixa de [0,35 - 0,45] % e 0,22%Zr. Posteriormente, após a solidificação da liga em molde unidirecional horizontal, os lingotes foram transformados em perfis de 3,0mm e submetidos a ensaios mecânico de tração. Na parte de simulação computacional as propriedades mecânicas foram medidas usando chapas finas de aço e chapas mas espessas de alumínio, as propriedades obtidas nos ensaios reais, foram utilizadas como paramentos das simulações das chapas de alumínio, objetivamente a comparação das propriedades mecânicas com os resultados experimentais da liga estuda. Os resultados dessas análises permitem avaliar que a liga Al-0,05%Cu-[0,35-0,45] %Fe-0,22%Zr pode ser aplicada em componentes estruturais na indústria automotiva que trabalharem estaticamente na forma de fuselagem de automóveis de passeio ou veículos de trabalho com boas propriedades mecânicas.

In 1961, West Australian Petroleum's Eneabba No. 1 bore encountered 22 seams of coal totalling 40 ft in thickness between the depths of 6373 ft and 6441 ft. On analysis, this coal had a similar calorific value (8000-HOOO B.T.U./lb, assuming 20 per cent water) to the coal from the Collie Coalfield, Western Australia's only known area of commercially exploitable coal. Being buried to depths in excess of 6000 ft, the coal at Eneabba had developed weakly-coking properties, and thus, although much younger than the Permian coals of Collie, gave promise of being a major potential source of power for Western Australia.West Australian Petroleum undertook a programme of stratigraphic drilling and shallow test drilling to determine whether this coalhorizon persisted into the outcrop of the Lower Jurassic sediments in the Hill River district, 140 miles NNW. of Perth, and, if it was present, if the quality and quantity of the coal would warrant development of the deposits by open cutting. The coal horizon was identified in the near surface, but the poor quality of the coal and the complexity of the structure made development (in the area examined) uneconomic at the time.A strong seismic reflection in the Eneabba area occurs at the same depth as the Jurassic coals. This event originates within the upper beds of the Lower Jurassic and it is probable that the velocity contrast between the higher velocity siltstones and the very low velocity coals enhances this very strong, distinctive seismic reflection.This event can be followed on continuous seismic data over a large area of the northern Perth Basin, from 13 miles SE. of Dongara to 20 miles SW. of Coorow. It can be followed from a depth of 4000 ftnear Dongara to over 17,000 ft to the SE., so development of thisvast potential source of power will depend on the economics ofprocesses being developed for the production of power from theburning of coal seams in situ.INTRODUCTIONThe discovery of 22 seams of economically useable coaltotalling 40 ft in thickness in the Lower J urassic sedimentsof the Eneabba No. 1 bore (Fig. 1) led to the search forthese seams at economically workable depths. This report provides the results of a two year study of the projected time and cost requirements for new mine development in Wisconsin and is based on a unique blend of information from mining company officials, state regulatory agency officials and contractor experience. Through formal cooperative and review agreements with Kennecott Copy per Corporation, Exxon Minerals Co., U.S.A. and Noranda Mines Ltd., and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources plus informal arrangements with knowledgeable Wisconsin persons, lists of the tasks and subtasks required to plan a new mine in Wisconsin were developed. Times and costs were assigned to all tasks and subtasks and these data reviewed by all cooperators. Critical Path Method Diagrams were then developed for a generalized mining project. Total time and cost for the premine planning process was estimated to be 25..1 years and 223 person-years of professional time excluding public affairs effort respectively. By eliminating redundancies in the process and by increasing project efficiency through early public review and participation, recom¬mendations were made to lessen the time and lower the cost of premine planning. The streamlining recommendations could shorten the overall critical path length to 18.16 years and lower the cost to 208 person-years of professional time excluding public affairs effort. The estimated distribution of professional effort (cost) for mine planning in Wisconsin approximates 50.5% for traditional mine engineering tasks, 36.6% for environmental-regulatory tasks and 12.9% for traditional geological-exploration tasks.

Bauxite was first discovered in-the United States near Rome, Ga., in 1887, Approximately 400,000 tons of bauxite ranging from 46 to-62 percent alumina were mined in the area from 1888 to 1930. In February 1943, The Republic Mining & Manufacturing Co. installed a dryer and began mining and reworking dumps from the old bauxite mines. Some 3,000 long tons were dried and shipped to the chemical industries from March 1943, to June 30, 1943. In 1941 and 1942, representatives of the Bureau of Mined and the Federal Geological Survey/ visited this area and proposed an exploratory project that at first was to be confined to the Heritage district northeast of Rome (see fig; I). The Bobo district, southwest of Rome, was to be explored after work .1n the Hermitage district was completed. The Hermitage district comprises an area of about 50 square miles in the northwest quarter of Bartow County and the adjacent portion of Floyd County. It is bounded on the north by the Gordon County line, on the east by U. S. Highway 41, on the south by U. S. Highway 441, and on the west by State Highway 53.

The primary purpose of this paper is to show the appreciable savings that were made by roof-bolting the main west entry of the Kings mine, which was to be the permanent, main haulage road, as compared to the cost of supporting the same roof with peg timbering as first planned. Additional items that might prove valuable to other mine operators are contained in this paper and detailed below. 1. A detailed cost of the system of roof support known locally as the peg-timbering method is given. It consists fundamentally of supporting steel cross bars on pegs inserted into holes drilled in the ribs close to the roof. 2. A method of supporting the roof in caved entries is shown, where such support must endure for an extended period in haulageways and air courses.

Results for the first underground test of the ventilated drum in a U.S. coal mine are presented. Tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines through a contract research program with Foster-Miller, Inc., to evaluate dust control effectiveness in a western mine and for gas control in a full scale laboratory facility. The ventilated drum is designed to reduce the amount of dust from cutting by drawing dust-laden air from the cutting zone through twelve water- powered "dust capture" tubes built into the shell of the shearer drum. High pressure water up to 1 12.48 kg per cm2 (1,600 psig), released from sprays, induces maximum airflow of 1.89 m3/sec (4,000 cfm) from the face side of the drum and provides cleaning for respirable dust and improved methane dispersion. At the gob side of the drum a deflector plate, attached to the cowl arm, turns the water spray and a proportion of the cleaned air back into the cutting zone. More than 50 ventilated drums have been installed to date in England, and their tests carried out on fixed height and single-ended ranging drum shearers have shown reductions in respirable dust of 60-80 pct, as compared with conventional wet cutting. The U.S. test on a double drum shearer showed slightly lower reduction.
