Starting with rutile, containing more than 55% TiO2 and of the proper particle size, the commercial production of titanium tetrachloride via fluidized bed chlorination is relatively very simple and economical. As compared to shaft chlorination, it operates at a much higher capacity for given sizing of equipment, and appears more foolproof, requiring less attention. Operating data were obtained on a 53" diameter fluidized bed chlorinator using Australian rutile and petroleum coke of controlled particle size. Production rates varied from 20 to 50 tons of crude TIC14 per day for a campaign extending over one month. Close to theoretical yields and efficiencies were obtained from the viewpoint of chlorine and/or rutile consumption. Details of important equipment design, critical operating conditions and pertinent results are described.

A room and pillar coal operation in central Pennsylvania was experiencing roof cutters and long running roof falls caused by high horizontal stresses. The roof conditions created hazards for the miners, and caused several production panels to be abandoned prematurely. The mine requested assistance from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in applying the "advance and relieve" mining to reduce the affects of the horizontal stress during panel development. The "advance and relieve" plan that was developed called for removing a pillar on one side of the panel as it was being advanced, thus creating a cave. The caving then relieved a portion of the horizontal stress across the panel. Because the horizontal stress direction is key to the success of this method, stress mapping as well as mining experience was used to establish the direction of the horizontal stress. Subsequent field measurements provided an estimate of the stress magnitude. Three panels were mined using this technique, and good roof conditions were achieved in all these panels. Instrumentation was used to monitor the stress changes in the roof created by the cave. Stress relief of over 1,000 psi was measured 120 ft from the cave and to depths of 20 ft into the roof. The lateral extent of the stress relief zone across the panels appears to be about 400 to 500 ft. This case history has provided much insight into the practical application of the "advance and relieve" method discussed in this paper.

We all know what needs to be accomplished, but struggle with how to do it, especially in an industry which has not always experienced management/union cooperation, and mistrust is still present.This paper describes a process to improve team work and employee involvement in Inco's nickel carbonyl refinery at Copper Cliff The process involves facilitatorship training for all employees, and a system for reinforcing and accomplishing the required behavioural change. The system is described in detail and a number of examples are presented. At the refinery, the staff is starting to understand as Max DePree recently wrote ""Without Quality Behaviour, you cannot have Quality Product"". IntroductionThe Copper Cliff Nickel Refinery (CCNR) is Inco's largest and most modern nickel refinery, which celebrated its twentieth year of successful operation in April 1993.The heart of the refinery is the Inco pressure carbonyl (IPq plant which produces high purity nickel pellets and specialty powders by refining an approximate 80% nickel granule feed. The carbonyl plant is a modem chemical plant with very special and demanding requirements for safety and environmental protection due to the toxic nature of the refining gas.Since 1987, there has been an emphasis at CCNR on a comprehensive Total Quality Improvement (TQI) Program which was designed based on recognizing customers' needs for improved systems for quality management. This program is customer oriented and comprises such elements as team organizational concepts, customer audits, process assessment and internal quality auditing.A detailed review of progress was made in early 1991 and it became apparent that the ""ownership"" of the TQI program was not broad based. In fact, the program was very much a staff driven effort and fell far short of total employee involvement and relentless continuous improvement that are now considered essential to remain competitive and stay in business.Inco staff has now come to regard that early phase of our TQI program as ""the technical aspects of total quality improvement"".The safety experience was also puzzling. Even though the safety statistics were good with an average lost time frequency of 1.6 for the last five years, the perfonnance improvement had plateaued and remained pretty much the same. Clearly a new approach was required if significant progress and continuous improvement was to be made."

The movement of solids by pipeline is an art dating back well over 100 years as evidenced by many references in the literature. Even though all of the early pipeline transport systems were based on trial and error and relied mainly upon the designer's experience, hydraulic transport offered distinct advantages in convenience or cost for the chemical, mining, and civil engineering industries. It became well established for in-plant process lines, dredging, waste disposal, and other uses almost exclusively for short distances. During more recent times, much research work has been done in an attempt to understand the underlying principles involved in transporting solids in a fluid. Design criteria for pumping slurries have evolved to the point where pipelines designed for distances of several miles to several hundred miles can be accomplished successfully. Consolidation Coal Company designed and built a 10-inch diameter 108-mile long line1 for transporting coal in the 1950's and operated it from 1957 to 1963 when it was placed in mothballs because of falling freight rates for rail shipment. More recently, the 273-mile Black Mesa Pipeline2 was built and is operating. There are other examples of long distance pipelines,3 but all are for specially prepared fine slurries which allow the pipeline to be operated more economically.

Qda. Honda es una pequeña quebrada ubicada en la vertiente occidental sur del Perú que aporta agua no regulada a las operaciones de la unidad mineraToquepala de Southern Perú. Sin embargo, durante la temporada de lluvia se arrastra material sólido en suspensión y de fondo, inhabilitando las estructuras de captación y limitando su captación de la cuenca. En ese sentido, el presente texto desarrolla una alternativa para modificar la captación de la cuenca - en tanto permita incrementar el flujo captable en periodo húmedo hasta los 110 L/s, a través de un sistema novedoso de filtración adicional al de ventana superficial; y en periodo seco, se disminuya el flujo captado por medio de un escurrimiento aguas abajo de 20 L/s. De forma que desarrolla una distribución ajustada al comportamiento natural del cauce y ambos usuarios se benefician de una fuente muy errática y limitada.

Dewatering of typical Florida phosphate rock slime by electro - osmotic techniques was investigated to determine if a compacted , plastic solid product could be obtained with simultaneous recovery of the water for re - use . Tests with porous cathodes and rod - type anodes imbedded in dilute slime charges of up to 4 tons in weight showed that the slime could be dewatered to about 35 percent solids . The dewatered products had the consistency of modeling clay . In the large - scale tests using 2.5 - foot electrode spacings , about 21 kilowatthours of power were consumed per ton of water removed in thickening the slime from 17 to 25 percent solids , but the rate of water removal was so slow that the process was not considered commercially feasible . Other tests made with electrode spacings of from 2.5 to 8 feet showed that more rapid dewatering could be obtained but that the power required was excessive . However , for special uses such as stabilizing slime pond dikes where the cost of dewatering might not be a prime requisite , high voltages could be used to rapidly remove the water . Tests of 400 - pound slime charges using a combination of electroosmosis and vacuum filtration showed that the rate of dewatering could be expedited . The average power required to thicken a ton of slime from 15 to 35 percent solids was 5 and 50 kilowatt - hours when operating the electroosmotic filtration cell at potentials of 20 and 100 volts , respectively . calculated filtration area of about 10 square feet per ton of slime treated per day was required to thicken the slime from 15 to 35 percent solids .

Acidic mine waters containing solubilized uranium have been observed in many uranium and some copper mines. In every case, the sulphide and iron oxidizing bacterium, Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, was also present. This bacterium provides the ferric iron required to oxidize u+4, both by oxidizing available ferrous iron and by oxidizing pyrite or other available sulphide minerals. This latter oxidation also provides sulphuric acid and may increase extraction by exposing more uranium. The enhancement of bacterial activity and the results of some field tests are discussed.

Titanium nitride in upgraded nitrided ilmenite (bulk of iron removed) can selectively be chlorinated to produce titanium tetrachloride. Except for iron, most other components present during this low temperature (ca. 200°C) chlorination reaction will not react with chlorine. It is therefore necessary to remove as much iron as possible from the nitrided ilmenite. Hydrochloric acid leaching is a possible process route to remove metallic iron from nitrided ilmenite without excessive dissolution of species like titanium nitride and calcium oxide. Calcium oxide dissolution results in unrecoverable acid consumption. The leachability of nitrided ilmenite in hydrochloric acid was evaluated by determining the dissolution of species like aluminium, calcium, titanium and magnesium in a batch leach reactor for 60 minutes at 90°C under reflux conditions. The hydrochloric acid concentration (11%, 18% and 25%), initial acid-to-iron mole ratio (2:1, 2.5:1 and 3.3:1), and solid-to-liquid mass ratio (1:8.33 to 1:2.13) were varied. The results indicate that a hydrochloric acid concentration of 25 wt% supplied in a 2:1 acid-to-iron mole ratio would produce the most favourable upgraded nitrided ilmenite product. The dissolution of iron in this solution reached 97 per cent after only 60 minutes. The total dissolution of calcium and titanium species was 0.01 and 0.11 wt% respectively. Hydrochloric acid can therefore be used as lixiviant to remove metallic iron from nitrided ilmenite. Combustion processes, comminution and materials handling can generate airborne particulates. Regulation of these particulates by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) is becoming progressively more stringent, and regulations will soon include ?nanoparticulates,? which are particles finer than 100 nanometers (0.1 mm). Nanoparticulates are believed to have significant negative health effects due to their high surface area and reactivity. Although it was argued that nanoparticulate concerns were only important for combustion, studies at Michigan Technological University have shown that materials handling and comminution release significant quantities of nanoparticles into the air. Laboratory studies have shown that the use of sodium metasilicate reduced airborne particles finer than 10 mm (PM10) by 86% and particles finer than 2.5 mm (PM2.5) by 80% for iron ore. Additional studies were conducted that revealed that nanoparticulate emissions were present in the types of operations conducted at pyrometallurgical facilities.

Precrusher stockpiles are designed principally as buffers to decouple the mining and processing operations. They are usually paddock dumped or dumped over a face to form fingers by dumping haul truckloads and reclaimed by front-end loader in an ad hoc manner. In addition, they are often not built and reclaimed to completion but continually added to and extracted from. While this design suits the mining process and is operationally simple, there can be little confidence in the grade of the ore that is fed to the crusher. This makes short-term grade control difficult and reconciliation back to the mine face imprecise. Well-designed and operated precrusher stockpiles can overcome these deficiencies.The different types of grade variability in mining are reviewed in this paper. The role of precrusher stockpiles in reducing short-term variability is discussed and their ineffectiveness in addressing long-term variability is highlighted. Their role in removing the serial correlation of the extracted ore is explained.Precrusher stockpiles carry out the four, at times competing, objectives of storing, buffering, blending and grade separation. Their actual design and operation result from a compromise between these four competing roles. These roles are explained in detail along with the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of precrusher stockpiles. The recommended blended-in blended-out stockpile (BIBO) design is discussed in detail. Matched pairs of BIBO stockpiles of limited tonnage built and reclaimed to completion retain the best knowledge of grade and facilitate the reconciliation process.Simulation studies have been carried out on BIBO stockpiles to understand the blending opportunities of the different options for building and reclaiming, and to identify the methods that achieve maximum blending. It was found that laying down rows in one direction and reclaiming across these rows gives the best blending. Matching the width of the reclaim face with the daily crushing requirements is also important. The length of the rows, and building in either one or two layers has little effect on the extent of blending.Appropriate design can provide a reasonable compromise between the four objectives.CITATION:Jupp, K, Howard, T J and Everett, J E, 2013. SOME nonmetallic minerals and their products, such as portland cement, common brick and hollow tile, sand, gravel, crushed rock, vitrified salt-glaze clay pipe, and the like, are a necessity in every community. They are mineral in nature but the establishment of plants for their production is usually a local and elementary problem. Yet it is probable that an economic study of the problem in every locality will show that such nonmetallic mineral commodities are not always obtained in the most economical way, or in the best quality. Other nonmetallic minerals are of such value that they may be shipped for long distances and sold in sufficient quantities to establish prosperous commercial ventures. Among these are phosphates, barium compounds, borates, nitrogen compounds, magnesium compounds, sulfur, asbestos, and potash. Success in marketing such products depends on quality, production cost, transportation, and similar conditions.

Microscopic examinations of quenched (beta) 60:40 copper-zinc and quenched (beta) 74:26 copper-tin alloys have frequently disclosed long, thin parallel bands or markings within the polyhedral beta grains. Apparently, it has been accepted that these markings are mechanical twin bands, although there is no published account of experimental data that might tend to substantiate this belief for the copper-zinc system, and only meager evidence has been submitted for the copper-tin system. Johnsonl0 commented upon the markings he observed after deforming a quenched brass of 55.6 per cent copper and 44.4 per cent zinc. Clark's papers4 on the heat-treatment of Muntz metal contain many photomicrographs of markings in beta brass; these she referred to as Neumann bands (inasmuch as repolishing and re-etching failed to remove them) and stated that markings present in Muntz metal as quenched were the result of shock imparted during the polishing operation. Van Wert18 first suggested that these parallel markings in quenched beta brass (60:40) might be alpha precipitated along certain crystallographic planes of the matrix lattice. He showed that upon reheating the specimens to temperatures below 800" C., obvious precipitation of alpha within the large beta grains first occurred at the markings. In a discussion of this paper, Phillips stated (pp. 505-507) that in his opinion the markings observed by Van Wert were mechanical twins resulting from contraction strains produced during the quenching operation. In a study of segregate structures in beta copper-tin, Smith17 observed that in the quenched beta phase (containing 74.92 per cent Cu) parallel . bands or markings very similar to those in metastable beta brass could be

"A recent study calibrated Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) resistance factors for local soil conditions in the Las Vegas Valley. As a part of this calibration, an extensive database of drilled shaft load tests and associated subsurface soil information were collected and compiled. This database, deemed the Nevada Department of Transportation Deep Foundation Load Test Database or NDFLTD, was designed with the presentation of load test data, the subsurface soil conditions, and the spatial distribution of the data in mind. In addition, the NDFLTD was developed in a way that allows additional data to be added as it becomes available. As such, the rules of database normalization were followed to allow for additional and different types of data to be added to the database and reports. Microsoft Access was chosen to present the data because it is easily accessible to anyone with Microsoft office software, it has a quick learning curve, and it has the ability to present a relational database. The largest obstacle faced when creating the NDFLTD was normalizing the data used in the LRFD calibration, with the goal of reaching the 5th normal form.INTRODUCTIONLRFD is based on statistical performance of engineering components, as opposed to the more traditional Allowable Strength Design (ASD), which divides the strength of a component by a safety factor. Calibration of resistance factors for LRFD requires a robust statistical analysis of past performance. For drilled shafts this requires a database of full scale load tests (Abu-Hejleh et al. 2014). The FHWA developed the largest US based deep foundation load test database, deemed the DFLTD, collecting data from 1985 to 2003 when funds ran out (Abu-Hejleh et al. 2014). Recently, the DFLTD has been updated to modern standards (Petek et al. 2016). In October of 2007, the FHWA mandated state department of transportations (DOTs) to follow AAHSTO LRFD guidelines for their highway foundation designs (Abu-Hejleh et al. 2014). Since then multiple state DOTs have developed their own, region specific deep foundation load test databases. Florida has a long history of developing databases for deep foundation LRFD resistance factor calibration, with the two main databases being the FL database, and The Deep Foundations Database (Abu-Hejleh et al. 2014). Iowa developed a Microsoft Access based database in 2014 (Garder et al. 2014). Oregon developed a database compiling pertinent data from the DFLTD, Florida DOT’s Deep Foundation Database, as well as from other databases (Smith et al. 2011). Illinois developed the “International Database” for static and dynamic reliability based calibration (Long et al. 2009). Louisiana developed a database for LRFD Calibration of driven piles in 2009 (Abu-Farsakh et al. 2009). The California Department of Transportation has its own internal foundation database, which is housed within the Foundation Testing Branch archive (Smith et al. 2011). In 2016, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) presented its own LRFD calibration for the Las Vegas Valley (Stanton et al. 2017), and the NDFLTD was developed as a part of that project (Motamed et al. 2016)."

During the radium boom in the early part of the twentieth century, the basic chemistry of uranium was fairly well defined. Uranium production has progressed from the status of a radium by-product to a very important industry. With the ever increasing need for more efficient and cheaper methods of processing uranium ores, new techniques are being developed. Since uranium and vanadium often occur together in nature, the latter element will also be considered. As production rates, costs, and certain aspects of uranium chemistry are still classified by the Atomic Energy Commission, these will not be discussed. Domestic uranium deposits, in general, are composed of the minerals carnotite, which contains hexavalent uranium, and to a lesser extent, pitchblende and uraninite, which contain tetravalent uranium. Carnotite also usually contains vanadium. The uranium and vanadium contents of these ores vary considerably. The ores currently processed on the Colorado Plateau assay from 0.2 to 0.4 pct U and from trace amounts to 5.0 pct V. On the other hand, the phosphate rock deposits of the southeastern U. S., from which uranium is also recovered, contain only about 0.01 to 0.02 pct; processing of the
