"The Marvel mines 1 and 3 of the Roden Coal Co. are located in the Cahaba field in Bibb County, Ala., nearly southwest from Birmingham, an airline distance of roughly 30 miles. The coal of the Clark seam at this point has some coking properties, but at present it is sold exclusively as a domestic and steaming coal.This paper, which is the second of a series on the washability of Alabama coals, like its predecessor dealing with the Mary Lee seam,5 contains screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests of a representative sample of the raw slack, and slotted-screen tests showing the proportions of flaky particles in certain selected sizes; inasmuch as this coal is not used for coke manufacture, no crushing tests have been made. These data have been obtained in connection with an exhaustive study of coal preparation in Alabama, now being conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama with the cooperation of the different coal operators. As the work progresses, other papers will follow containing further data on Alabama coals and giving results obtained in preparing these coals by various methods.The only published investigative work on the Clark seam is that of Forbes,6 who gives a number of sections of this seam in Marvel No. 3 mine with proximate and ultimate analyses of face samples taken in the mine and also some analyses of delivered coal.The available information on this coal indicated that the preparation problem was one of ash reduction. In order to substantiate this information a complete analysis of the 3/4 by 3/16 inch size, and sulphur determinations and ash-fusibility tests of the float-and-sink fractions have been made; these results are given in Tables 1 and 2. As these results also indicate that the preparation problem is one of ash reduction, the tests and discussion have been devoted to that subject."

Classification within the Inferred Resource category is based on geological judgement and the balance of extrapolation versus interpolation that the Competent Person is prepared to accept. These resources are typically drilled at spacings well in excess of the geostatistical range and at a density that is non-uniform. In many cases, a substantial proportion of the available data will be historical, and should be considered with more recent data sources. The provision of a robust geological model will increase the confidence in any resource estimate, and should be viewed as a critical component. The definition of Inferred Resources is of great importance to vein gold projects, since Indicated and Measured Resources generally require costly underground development for delineation. Indeed, many gold vein operations possess substantial quantities of Inferred Resources (>75 per cent) in their resource inventory both at project start-up and during production. This contribution explores a number of the key issues when using the Inferred Resource category and presents four recent case studies.

Quantifying the performance of a comminution circuit relative to the potential that can be achieved is a standard requirement in justifying operating practice (the stick) and seeking operational upside (the carrot). Historic measures tend to focus on performance relative to laboratory design tests that provide a direct measure of specific grinding energy, such as the Bond Work index; or use dropweight breakage tests calibrated to a substantial database of operating sites, such as the SMC methodology. Although of value, such approaches are flawed in significant aspects. The assumption is that the laboratory prediction is correct and the single sample it is based on is representative. The database benchmarking methods are, by definition, locked into current average operating practice. These approaches do not illuminate upside; can ‘punish’ operations that are actually more efficient, such as grinding finer than standard operation; and reward poor operation that may comfortably produce a coarser grind than optimal for recovery or excess slimes that reduce recovery and increase water consumption and tailings volume. The authors present a set of established and easily applied measures, that draw together daily operation, highlight areas of opportunity and inefficiency, use simple samples and data, and can be used to provide the ‘size of the prize’ in pursuing specific areas of process improvement. These tools include size specific energy (SSE), overall operating effectiveness (OEE) which includes product quality, theory of constraints, and links this to the end objective – maximising the efficient production of valuable metals. Feeds into objective function driven by economics – financial return, energy, environment.

Minor subsidence damage to the Burgettstown Junior-Senior High School building and grounds near Burgettstown, Washington County, Pennsylvania, prompted an investigation of the site in early 1985 by the Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources. The investigation determined that subsidence over an abandoned coal mine was occurring and that additional damaging subsidence would occur if reclamation measures were not taken. A Pittsburgh Coal Seam Mine which was abandoned in the 1920's underlies the school at a depth of sixty-five (65) feet. This sixty-five foot section is comprised of five (5) feet of unconsolidated overburden and sixty (60) feet of thinly bedded, highly fractured shale. Approximately five and one-half (5-1/2) feet of Pittsburgh Coal was extracted at the school site. A thin shale binder and one (1) to one and one-half (1-1/2) feet of roof coal were left in place. Within the Contractor's Underground Working Area (See Figure 1) approximately thirty (30) percent of the coal was extracted. It appears that the mine was just being developed in the vicinity of the school when it was abandoned for no known reason. Other nearby portions of the mine show extraction approaching sixty-five (65) percent.

Union Carbide has recently developed two open- pit vanadium mines in the Wilson Srpings area of central Arkansas about five miles southeast of Hot Springs. The ores from these mines, together with those from a larger vanadium deposit at nearby Magnet Cove, are processed at a new 1600- tpd plant built by the company in the immediate vicinity (Fig. 1). The Wilson Springs vanadium deposits are associated with the Potash Sulfur Springs intrusive, a circular igneous complex which is exposed over an area that is somewhat less than a mile in diameter.1 The complex has a crude ring structure similar to that of the larger Magnet Cove instrusive six miles to the east.2

In the present paperwork is proposed an economical-mathematical model (fuzzy) that aims optimize the technological variants of the mechanized coal face. By fuzzification, the issues to solve become more flexible and allow the decision maker to acquire more variants for the functions objectively established. The description of technological solutions is carried out by a set of controllable variables of "category" type by which the type of the machinery is defined within the frame of the actual geological & mining conditions. In the paperwork are used concepts of "successions graph" and "matrix of compatibilities"; with their help a methodology to choose between different technological variants of coalfaces is proposed. It treats the problem of developing the functions that express the membership degree in vague concept. In the end it is presented an assessment procedure for the technological variants of mechanized coal face.

THERE are three active mines in the Chewelah-Colville district, the United Silver Copper near Chewelah, and the Old Dominion and the Chloride Queen near Colville. The Admiral near Valley is also doing development work. The Chewelah district is in the south central part of Stevens County in the Colville Valley. Chewelah, a thriving town of 1600 people, and the scene of operations of the Northwest Magnesite Co., is about the center of the district. It is situated in a farming community on the Spokane-Nelson branch of the Great Northern railway, about 65 miles north of Spokane. Only two or three of the mines in the district have been extensively developed, although many have been prospected. The general elevation of the valley, is about 1600 or 1700 ft., that of the mountain ranges on each side about 3000 to 4000 ft., with gentle slopes and rounded glaciated tops. Prospecting is often difficult because of much glacial debris.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) has recently developed a series of models utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to study gas distribution around a continuous mining machine with various fan-powered flooded bed scrubber discharge configurations. CFD models utilizing Species Transport Model without reactions in FLUENT were constructed to evaluate the redirection of scrubber discharge toward the mining face rather than behind the return curtain. The following scenarios are considered in this study: 100% of the discharge redirected back towards the face on the off-curtain side of the continuous miner; 100% of the discharge redirected back towards the face, but divided equally to both sides of the machine; and 15% of the discharge redirected toward the face on the off-curtain side of the machine, with 85% directed into the return. These models were compared to a model with a conventional scrubber discharge where air is directed away from the face into the return. The CFD models were calibrated and validated based on experimental data and accurately predicted sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas levels at four gas monitoring locations. One additional prediction model was simulated to consider a different scrubber discharge angle for the 100% redirected, equally divided case. These models identified relatively high gassy areas around the continuous miner which may not warrant their use in coal mines with medium to high methane liberation rates. This paper describes the methodology used to develop the CFD models, and the validation of the models based on experimental data.INTRODUCTION Methane gas and respirable dust are two hazards frequently encountered at continuous miner (CM) operations. An accumulation of both methane gas and coal dust may lead to massive explosions underground [1], and overexposure to respirable coal dust can result in pneumoconiosis (commonly referred to as “Black Lung Disease”) in coal workers [2]. Current U.S. federal coal mine regulations limit concentrations of methane gas to below 1% at the face area and require exposures to respirable coal dust to be at or less than 2.0 mg/m3 for an 8 h shift average. Begin on August 1, 2016; the overall respirable dust standard in coal mines is reduced from 2.0 to 1.5 mg/m3 for full shift sampling. If the quartz content of the dust exceeds 5% by weight, the dust standard becomes more stringent, reducing the allowable concentration to the value of 10 divided by the % quartz."

"This paper describes several applications of Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) in gassolid two phase flows. A new image reconstruction algorithm was evaluated by both simulation and experiments. It is then applied to the online measurement of solids distributions in square circulating fluidized beds (CFBs) and good results were obtained. From the measurement of solids distributions in the bottom zone of a CFB, a bubbly fluidization pattern is identified. A cross-correlation technique was combined with the solids concentration measurements to obtain the flow rate through the dip leg of the cyclone, i.e. the circulating rate of a test CFB. The same· technique was applied in a dense phase pneumatic transport pipe provides the solids concentration, and the flow rate of a wavy gas-solids flow.IntroductionElectrical capacitance tomography (ECT) has been developed for imaging multiphase distributions in the 90's of the ·last century. It is a non-intrusive method. The principle of ECT can be firefly described as follows:Firstly ECT uses a number of electrodes to surround the measuring zone, depicted by Fig. I. The capacitances between the electrodes are measured in turn and an array C is obtained that contains a total number of m independently measured capacitances. Meanwhile the measuring zone is virtually divided into a grid of n pixels, represented by an array G, named the image vector, the gray level of each pixel represents the local value of the concentration of the material. As the material distribution will be reflected by the capacitances between each pair of electrodes, such distributions can be reconstructed according to the measured capacitance, a process called image reconstruction. A common image reconstruction method is called linear-backprojection (LBP). Four parameters of the Drais stirred ball mitt, i.e., bead load, bead size, flow rate and top feed size have been studied regarding their influence on the specific surface area. A factorially designed scheme was employed for conducting 27 mitting tests. The results show that the bead toad is the most important parameter in terms of increasing the specific surface area with less energy consumption. The bead size is also important. The optimum ratio of bead size to top feed size is found to be 14 to 80, which is much wider than in bat2 milling. The variations in flow rate and top feed size appear to influence the process insignificantly.

WHEN we consider the efforts made in Europe to promote the physical and moral well-being of the working classes, the question is suggested whether in this country, where, theoretically, every man is peculiarly the arbiter of his own destiny, we may not be too prone to expect every man to take care of himself, and neglect to make those provisions for the welfare of the employed, demanded alike by enlightened economy and humanity. In the older countries, where the disproportion between capital and labor is greater, and the working classes are more dependent, their welfare largely occupies the attention of employers. The subject is involved in the problem of the just relations of capital and labor, and we are rapidly approaching the time, if we have not already reached it, when a generous paternal interest in the welfare of the employed should be more generally manifested. It is a subject which is of special importance to mine-owners and engineers in this country, especially to those located in the coal regions. My own attention has been particularly directed to it by a visit made to the Hassard collieries, a few miles from Liege, Belgium, under the direction of M. Andrimont. This celebrated engineer has established a comfortable home for the miners near the mouth of the shaft of the mine. It has been highly successful and beneficent in its results, and may to a great degree be regarded as a, model for such undertakings. It is known as "Hotel Louise," this being the name of Madame d'Andrimont, who laid the corner-stone of the building April 4th, 1871. The structure is of brick, upon three sides of a square, and

"This paper argues that the technology change to mechanization is also going to require a change in people. It presents a model for technological progress and adapts it to the mining industry. It then goes on to motivate the need for mines to become learning organizations in order to achieve maximum value from their people as they become less labour-intensive. In an important sense, mechanization is as much about knowledge as it is about technology.The change when a mine introduces mechanization or a level of automation is not simply one of technology but also a stage in the development of mining from ‘art’ to ‘science’. ‘Art’ describes a state of technology characterized by tacit knowledge, an understanding that comes only from experience, and has no formal procedures and little structure. In contrast, ‘science’ represents a state of technology where all the component processes are understood in detail, all knowledge is explicit, and processes and structures are formal.Studies of other industries, including metal part manufacture and aviation, show that each stage in the progression from art to science changes the nature of the organization and requires a different mix of skills from the workforce. Perhaps the most important change is the increase in knowledge and decision-making required as the technology gets closer to science.There is anecdotal evidence that South African underground hard-rock mines are not learning organizations. Mines by their nature are capitalintensive with long lead times from investment to returns, so there is reluctance to change from the original plans or to encourage staff to think independently. Particularly as mines move from art to science, this reluctance must be overcome.The important lesson for engineers involved in introducing mechanization is to understand that success or failure will be determined by the people involved, and not solely by the technology. The process will almost certainly require a culture change on the mine. We recommend that the mechanization team includes an expert in human and organizational behaviour to ensure that a receptive workforce and management are in place to accept the new technology when it arrives."

An investigation of the factors af-fec.ting the inter-zonal flow of fluids in the casing-wellbore annrc1rt.s of an oil or gas ivell is presented Laborntory tests revealed that failure of the caring-cement bond allows communi-cation of fluid at pressure differentials near 1.000 psi. Perforating with a 11011011: carrier gun does not shatter or crack the cement sufficiently to allow communication through these cracks and does not seriously affect the casing-cement bond failure pressure. The pressure to cause communication at the casing-cement bond can he increared to 3,000 psi by. limiting pipe deformation during cementing and subsequent operations. Communication can be prevented, however. up to pressures sufficient to cause the cement to fail or the casing to col-lapse, by attaching to the casing a seal ring of deformable ruhber molded between two steel flanges. When installed, one flange is attached rigidlv to the casing to serve as back-up for the gasket While tile other flange is movable. To date, these gasket seal rings have been field-tested in 27 Wells. Althotrgh communication has been noted in two wells, inter-zonal flow has been prevented in other wells in the same area by installing more seal rings between the communicaring zones. INTRODUCTION The inter-zonal flow of fluids behind casing cemented in oil wells during normal production or stimulation operations is a major operating problem. If it cccurs during production operations. it can seriously limit the pressure to which a reservoir may be depleted without harmful invasion of unwanted fluids. If it occurs during stimulation operations, it may preclude the possibility of stimulating the desired zone. This communication can be caused by failure of the bond between the casing and cement, failure of the bond between the cement and formation, or failure of the cement itself. This paper presents the results of an investigation of factors affecting com-munication at the casing-cement bond and methods which aid in preventing it. LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS The laboratory tests performed in this study were divided into three phases. The first phase consisted of tests to determine if perforating would shatter and crack the cement sheath so severely that communication would occur through the cement itself. The second phase consisted of tests to determine more precisely the cause for the casing-cement bond failure. The third phase consisted of tests to evaluate the effectiveness of various de-formable seals attached to the casing in preventing communication. EFFECT OF PERFORATING, The effect of perforating was invest~gated in tests performed with apparatus shown on Fig. 1. Cement was poured into the annulur space hetween 5%-in. casing and 8%-in. casing and allowed to cure for 72 hours. The apparatus was then perforated with a hollow carrier gun containing eight duPont 26-A shaped charges. Bull plugs were placed over the perforations in the 8 5/8-in. casing and hydraulic pressure was applied inside the 5 1/2i-in. casing. The pressure to cause fluid communication past the cement sheath was observed and termed the "bond failure pressure". During the design of copper refinery tankhouses, there is a need to develop mass balance calculations for many process components, so that optimum physical plant configuration is achieved. Each mass balance is complex, possibly with over 120 interactive variables as basic input data. Recent developments in tankhouse design (e.g. permanent cathodes) have greatly increased the design options available for any project, multiplying even further the requirement for calculations. In the past these calculations were tedious and susceptible to human error. A comprehensive computer program can now simplify the task of the process metallurgist, enabling more sophisticated and sensitive plant designs to be produced. The paper describes the successful development of a flexible mass balance program that originallly was used in a feasibility study which had to be completed within a short time schedule. The program has been further developed and used for design and energy calculations; it can be usefully applied to existing plants to assess the impact of variations in operating parameters. The software takes account of staged liberation, electrolyte purification bleed and generates a reliable process inventory listing: it can also cope with stripper starting sheet options and disparate commercial circuits.
