IN MY general contact with industry I have become more and more impressed with the need for the closest possible co-operation between engineers and metallurgists, and particularly with the need for appreciation of the work that each group is doing to assist the other. Also, I am convinced that from time to time it. is vitally important to a true perspective of human progress in all its branches, and certainly a salutary corrective of undue optimism and pessimism to endeavor to carry the mind hack over certain periods in the advance of technical knowledge, and form some kind of broad estimate of what has been accomplished in the application of science to industry in the fields with which we, as individuals or groups, may for the time being be concerned. We cannot without some appreciable mental effort realize what our forerunners have dine For us. If the young engineer or metallurgist entering industry today could be suddenly transported to a quarter of a century ago, and be compelled to work with the materials then available and within the limitations of knowledge then attained, he would, on his return to present-day life, have a much greater appreciation of what has been accomplished before lie arrived on the scene, and, what is even more important, a far more acute sense of its inherent value to his profession. I propose here merely to indulge in a general summary of the subject of improved engineering metals and alloys rather than in details, and to deal exclusively with developments within my own experience.

The copper and nickel smelting industries are important contributors to the technical and economic well-being of Canada while some of the smelters are among the largest sources of sulphur dioxide emissions in Canada. A review of the operations in six smelters - Falconbridge Limited, Falconbridge, Ontario; Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co. Limited, Flin Flon, Manitoba; Inco Limited, Copper Cliff, Ontario and Thompson, Manitoba; Noranda Mines Limited, Horne Division, Noranda, Quebec and Gaspe Mines Division, Murdochville, Quebec - have shown that about 80% of the total sulphur input to these smelters was emitted to the atmosphere in 1980. A simultaneous review of the existing and emerging technologies which can directly or indirectly reduce the sulphur dioxide emissions indicated that it is possible to reduce the emissions to below 20% of the sulphur input to these smelters. This can be achieved by varying degrees of modifications to the smelting operations and installing sulphur fixation facilities at significant costs which may increase the metal production costs. This would consequently make the competitiveness of the Canadian copper and nickel producers more difficult in the already tough world metals market.

As fibras naturais extraídas das folhas do curauá estão entre as mais fortes fibras naturais utilizadas como reforço de compósitos poliméricos para aplicações em engenharia. Tais compósitos, até agora, são limitados em relação às propriedades mecânicas e energia de impacto. Assim o objetivo do presente trabalho é de investigar a possibilidade da melhora da resistência à tração bem como a energia de impacto dos compósitos de matriz poliéster reforçados com fibras de curauá com variados parâmetros de processamento. Os parâmetros observados foram a quantidade de fibras com diâmetro fino e pressão aplicada durante o processamento. Utilizando 60% de fração volumétrica de fibras finas (diâmetro médio variando de 50 à 80 µm) contínuas e alinhadas foi possível se obter resistência à tração superior 200 MPa. Ainda, aplicando-se 30 MPa de pressão durante a cura foram obtidos mais de 270 MPa de resistência a tração. Já para resistência a impacto Izod, uma resistência de 340 J/m foi obtido pelos corpos de prova com entalhe feito em sentido perpendicular ao alinhamento das fibras.

O trabalho tem por objetivo de mostrar uma otimização da performance de sistema de lavagem de gases (conjunto espessador e filtro a vácuo) do Alto Forno de uma siderúrgica localizada no Nordeste, a CSP, Cia Siderúrgica do Pecem. A unidade entrou em operação no ano de 2016, inicialmente com orientações/informações de projeto, tendo muito desvios no controle da turbidez e sólidos suspensos da água da saída do espessador, em função da tecnologia aplicada, que não estava funcionando adequadamente para a realidade da região e ocasionava custo elevado, além de muitos problemas operacionais. A metodologia aplicada baseou-se em teste na planta com produtos químicos, ensaio de laboratório com teste de jarro e análises físico-químicas da água de recirculação. Os resultados obtidos foram excelentes na redução da turbidez e sólidos suspensos, aumento da retirada de lama pelo filtro rotativo, maior tempo de uso da manta dos filtros a vácuo e uma redução de custo com produto químicos e mão de obra, totalizando uma economia significativa em reais/ano.

A new method called Effective Dispersion Analysis of Reflections (EDAR) was recently developed to effectively analyze the dispersive waves generated from lateral impact to piles. This paper presents the results of nondestructive length estimation of existing piles through EDAR. EDAR provides a new visualization method for analyzing wave reflections by transforming the response into the frequency domain thus eliminating the need to perform difficult peak picking in the time domain. In addition to being able to analyze dispersive waves, EDAR also incorporates the effects of radiation damping due to the surrounding soil leading to more accurate length estimates. Concrete filled steel tubes of different embedment depths were tested both in laboratory and field conditions. Length estimates obtained were within 10% error margins after careful analysis accounting for the presence of soil effects and effects from pile top reflection.

Nitriding of metallic materials using electric discharges generated during electric discharge machining (EDM) is a recently developed technique. The aim of this paper was to correlate mechanical properties of a nitrided layer produced in AISI 4140 steel by EDM nitriding with the type and amount of nitrides. A conventional die-sinking EDM equipment and electrolytic copper electrodes were used to generate the electric discharges. The electrolyte was a solution of urea in deionized water. Knoop microhardness profiles assessed the variation of hardness along the nitrided layer, whereas the elastic modulus of this layer was measured using nanoindentation tests. Optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the nitrided surface. The results showed the formation of a nitrided layer containing iron nitrides with average thickness of around 25 µm. The amount of nitrides reduced from the surface towards the centre and these results correlated well with microhardness profiles obtained.

A high calcium fluid-bed combustor ash has been shown to be an effective binder at dosages of 1 to 2% of the magnetite concentrate weight. Magnetite pellets 1.3 cm (1/2 inch) in diameter were produced with dry crushing strengths greater than 22.3 Newtons/pellet (5.0 pounds force/pellet), which is comparable to the results produced using conventional bentonite binder. The effectiveness of fly-ash-based binders was considerably improved when calcium chloride was added as an accelerator. Addition of calcium chloride at a rate of 0.1 to 0.2% of the total powder weight increased the strength of dried pellets by as much as 22% compared to the strength of pellets made using fly-ash without accelerators.

Polymorphism of BaR2F8 compounds is analyzed, and some peculiarities of obtaining monoclinic low-temperature (3-BaR2F8 crystals (R=Y, Ho-Yb) and orthorhombic high¬temperature a-ßaR2F8 crystals (R=Yb, Lu) by the Bridgman-Stockbarger growth technique are discussed. We pay a special attention to BaYb2F8:Er3+ crystals, which are able to generate both 2:µm SE using the new four-level operating scheme (4F9/2?4I11/2 laser channel) and 2- and 3-µm SE by means of the cascade scheme (4F92?+4I11/2?+4I31/2). This 2-µm generation of Er3+ ions has an advantage over similar SE of Ho3+ and Tm3+ ions (especially under diode laser pumping), that is important in designing the medicine and ecology laser. We report on orthorhombic BaR2F8 crystals with the ordered structure, a new crystalline materials for generating Ln3+ ions. The growth conditions are determined and orthorhombic BaLu2F8 crystals of several cm3 in volume doped with Ce3+, Nd3+, Ho3+, Er3+, and Tm3+ ions are obtained for the first time. Spectroscopic and laser characteristics of these crystals are discussed for Nd3+-and Era+-doped samples serving as representative examples. In particular, low-threshold stimulated emission was excited in 4F3/2?+4I11/2 channel of Nd3+ ions in the BaLu2F8. Room-temperature generation was obtained also at -1.317 µm wavelength for Nd3+ and at ~2.8 µm (several lines) for Era+ ions in this new laser crystalline host with a threshold of about 20 J.

This paper presents an approach for estimating the fatigue life for the base of powered roof supports (shield) manufactured by the FAZOS roof support company. FAZOS?s powered roof supports are designed to operate on an inclined coal seam in full caving with a medium, strong roof strength. This shield support is utilized in conjunction with a shearer and face conveyor for a complete longwall mining system. To design shield support, it is essential for contractor to know the physical (hardness, toughness, etc.) and mechanical properties of material (tensile strength, Young?s modulus, etc.) used for the shield support as well as the geotechnical properties of the mine site. The fatigue strength of the shield support material depends on the mean stress, alternating stress, cycle frequency, transport dimensions, mine environment and other factors. In order to estimate the fatigue life for a powered roof support system, it is assumed in this paper that the support must keep the roof stable in the mine under variable load cycles. The approach selected in this study contains Goodman?s model (Goodman, 1899) for all blocks in the design housing which is subjected to sinusoidal load. On this basis, the degree of fatigue damage was calculated and compared to the results of experimental tests. It will be shown that there is a significant detrimental effect on the fatigue life of the base of the powered roof supports due to geometrical notches. The Ramberg-Osgood model and damage accumulation rule (Palmgren-Miner) (Miner M., 1945) were used and numerical analyses were conducted, utilizing ANSYS finite element software. These analyses play a very important role in longwall casing design. The proposed method allows assessment of the yield state and forecast of the structure cracking, taking plastic strains occurrence into account. The presented method is universal and can be applied for fatigue life estimation of other subassemblies of powered roof supports. The final portion of the paper presents results of variable amplitude loading simulations on the S355N and S690Q steel used to make powered roof supports. The results of the physical tests were compared with the results from finite element methods. The proposed approach to calculate fatigue life gives the best correlation between the experimental results and calculated values of fatigue life for the powered roof support base. Finally, the design process uses a simple approach to predict fatigue life in a short time, reducing design costs and providing longer service life for roof supports.

Tras destacar el extraordinario potencial que ofrece Perú, la autora precisa que debido a que los magmas son fértiles, se formaron yacimientos en columnas corticales favorables para incrementar las concentraciones de zinc en las rocas intrusivas y rocas sedimentarias (calizas y dolomitas); se tienen las mejores estructuras (e.g., fajas corridas y plegadas) que favorecieron el emplazamiento de los fluidos y excitación térmica en el tiempo geológico por radiactividad de los depósitos; y lo más importante, que se encuentran en su mayoría preservados debido a que las tasas de erosión donde afloran son mínimas.

Precipitation of tin from Pb-Sn alloys (lead-rich) occurs by the nucleation and growth of hemispherical cells which consist of tin lomelloe interspersed in the depleted solid solution. Nucleation and growth of these cells and the tin interlamellar spacing at various compositions and temperatures have been investigated. The interlamellar spacing increases approximately as the reciprocal of the logarithm of the supersaturation ratio. For constant initial tin concentration the concentration of cell nuclei increases with decreasing temperature to a limiting temperature-independent value. The kinetic results support the view that the cell growth rote is governed by the diffusion of tin along the cell boundary. In the main, the results confirm the authors' earlier deductions, drawn from resistometric and calorimetric data, about the precipitation mechonism. IT has been shown1, 2 that tin (ß) precipitates from lead-rich (a) PbSn solutions by the nucleation and growth of cells (cellular or discontinuous precipitation). These cells consist of tin lamellae, with a spacing 1, interspersed in a depleted a solution. Reorientation of a also accompanies cell growth. The kinetics of cellular precipitation of tin from lead have been measured by resistometric2, 3 and ca1orimetric1, 3 techniques. The time-transformation isotherms (t equals time; x, volume fraction of specimen transformed) of the initial rapid precipitation, which drains about 60 pet of the tin from solution, have been described by a kinetic law having the form x = 1 —exp (—bt n) [I] where n usually has the value 3.0. It was shown" that this law and the other kinetic facts can be explained satisfactorily if it is assumed that the cells grow at a constant rate and that all the cells nucleate in a time negligible in comparison with the period of cell growth before impingement. Thus, for hemispherical cells b = (2/3)pNG3 [21 where G is the rate of cell growth in cm per sec, and N is the number of cell nuclei per unit volume. The rapid rate of cell growth at low temperatures can be accounted for"' if it is assumed that the dissolved tin drains to the lamellae edges by diffusion along the sweeping cell boundary rather than by diffusion through the a crystal (volume diffusion). For cell growth governed by cell boundary diffusion it was shown, approximately G=2(X° - X° / X° ) DBA / l2 where A equals the thickness of the cell boundary; D R, the coefficient of diffusion of tin atoms within the boundary; and X° and X, are the atom fractions of tin in the supersaturated and saturated solutions, respectively. "El presente estudio describe el proceso de combate contra incendios efectuado por la mina de Cerro de Pasco. Dicho procedimiento incluye una revisión anterior al año 1936 en dos etapas, las técnicas actuales y los planes futuros preventivos sobre incendios. Anteriormente al año 1936, los siniestros ocurrían en los tajos del último tipo y la forma de contrarrestarlos era a través de tapones, aislando la zona de incendio y creando un enfriamiento por medio de chimeneas de ventilación. Sin embargo, esta forma de combate contra los incendios no resultó efectiva, dado que no evitaba completamente el ingreso del aire por medio de los tapones y a su vez, la proliferación de minerales con el tiempo volvía inaccesible la zona. Por tal motivo, la minera solicitó los servicios de un consultor, quien propuso tres sistemas: inundación de la zona del incendio, sofocación del incendiopor medio de anhdriddo carbónico y el sistema Plenum. De los tres sistemas, se consideró a este último pues mantenía la zona de incendio bajo presión de aire y no alteraba el resto de la zona de trabajo. Posteriormente se sugirió el uso del sistema ""Slimming"" o relleno de lodos, los cuales cubrían hidraúlicamente los espacios vacíos alrededor del incendio con un material inerte, adquierendo la forma de un fluído. La efectividad del método era suficiente que fue adoptada a partir de 1938 hasta el presente. Entre los procedimientos actuales se propuso el reemplazo del pino de oregón por la madera de eucalipto por su costo y composición menos inflamable. Asimismo el entablado del piso se sustituyó por una capa de concreto de tres pulgadas de espesor, limpieza del tajeo y equipamiento adecuado de las chimeneas, la ventilación adecuada, el entrenamiento permanente de las seis cuadrillas de combate, construcción de galerías y cruceros auxiliares de transporte, el relleno por lodo y el uso del sistema de alarma denominado ""Stench Mercaptan"", que se inyecta en las tuberías de aire comprimido y sistema telefónico. Durante los años 1968 a 1970 al Servicio da Geología y Minería el Servicio de Geología y Minería desarrolló un programa de Prospección Geoquímica regional en el Norte del Perú, abarcando desde Cajamarca hasta la frontera con el norte en el Ecuador. El objetivo fue descubrir nuevas áreas mineralizadas con probable interés económico a través del muestreo de sedimentos de quebrada se recolectaron 1,600 muestras y se realizaron alrededor de 12,000 determinaciones por cobro, molibdeno, zinc, plomo y plata. En ese sentido, el objetivo del presente texto es revisar los últimos estudios geológicos y químicos (1970-1971) realizados en las áreas con mayor anomalía en la zona. Así también describe la ubicación, geografía, el muestreo regional, la comparación de dispersión entre Michiquillay con otros depósitos cupríferos y la orientación regional de mineralización.

In 1984, at the request of Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Mines studied 8,500 acres of the 20,250-acre Seven Blackfoot Wilderness Study Area (WSA) consisting of all 3,950 acres of MT-024-657A and 4,550 acres of the 4,850 acre MT-024-657B in order to evaluate the mineral resources. Within this report these 8,500 acres are referred to as the study area. Located about 30 miles northwest of Jordan, MT, the study area is underlain by outcrops of Quaternary alluvium and Cretaceous to Paleocene sandstones, shales, clays, and coal. No mines or prospects were found in the study area. Except for some current interest in petroleum and natural gas, there has been no mineral exploration activity in the study area. The study area contains subeconomic clay, placer gold, and coal. Land within the study area is leased or under lease application for oil and gas.

El presente trabajo señala la importancia de la simulación matemática en la investigación de operaciones como medio de solución en la minería de cielo abierto y subterráneo. En este sentido, se revisa la repercusión del sistema de simulación GASP VI, el cual propone una serie de reglas de un sector de la realidad y lo simplifica en un modelo a construir. Este lenguaje de programación reconoce las identidades y sus atributos como codificación del valor de los atributos. Asimismo, sugiere el enlace entre el modelaje y las actividades del programa, simplificando el diseño y los análisis de las actividades requeridas por el problema a resolver.

The fundamental problem concerning the fracture of both crystalline and noncrystalline solids is the divergence between the actua1 and the theorcticallY computed fracture stresses; the stress required for fracture, computed from the forces between atoms, is many times that actually observed with commcrcinlly available materials. Computatiolls have been made,,2 indicating that the theoretical fracture stress should be from 100 to 1000 times that actually observed. There are other incidental problems that have arisen, perhaps the most importallt of which is the problem of size effect often observed in the measurement of the fracture stress of non-metallic solids, such as glass. Another effect conccrns the relation between deformation and the stress required for fracture, Experiments recently made with pearlitic steels indicate that the tensile fracture stress increases with increasing tensile deformation and decreases with increasing prior com-pressive deformation, This marked ani-sotropy of the effect of deformation on the fracture stress is in contrast with the essential isotropy of the flow stress. Early experiments on rock salt crystals by Joffe, et al.3 have illustrated the effect of tensile strain in increasing the tensile stress required for fracture. A consistent theory must be constructed that will explain not only the divergence, of the measured fracture stress from the theoretical value, the size effect, and the ergence of deformation; but will also explain and predict the effects of combined stress, of temperature, of strain rate, and of metallurgical structure. With respect to this last variable, it has now been relatively well established that the carbide particle is the clement of structure controlling the fracture of steels. In steels carbide particles vary in shape from plates to spheroids. It has been found that not only docs the magnitude Of the Fracture stress depend upon the size and shape of these particles. but also its dcpendencc upon strain is affected by changes in 'hap' an' size Or the particles. The precipitate resulting from the age hardening Of duralumin also modifies the fracture stress of this alloy. Nonmetallic inclusions greatly lower the fracture stress of all metals. The magnitude of the lowering depends 0' the size and shape of the included particles. In glass, the major source of the low fracture stress has been fairly conclusively demonstrate' by Griffith4 '0 arise from real flaws or cracks present in the material. He showed that the stress concentration at the end of a defect was of suficient magnitude to raise the stress at this location to a value comparable with the theoretical strength Of the material. If the cracks were reduced in size, Griffith showed that the observed fracture slrength the by virtue Of the decrease in stress concentration. He also pointed out that cracks disposed perpendicularly to the applied tensile stress would be more effective in lowering the fracture
