(New York -Meeting, February, 1912.) TORCHES were used by the early Romans for mine-lighting, and these were followed by open lamps or earthen jars filled with tallow or oil, and later by candles. In early coal-mining, explosive gases seldom occurred, and, if they were encountered, the danger of explosion was materially diminished by the absence of any ventilating-system and the consequent insufficient circulation of air to form with the methane an explosive mixture. As the art advanced, the danger of fire-damp became more apparent, and methods for testing the air were resorted to as early as in the fifteenth century. The method of testing consisted in lowering a clog in a, basket down the shaft. As soon as he encountered fire-damp he would commence to howl, after which he was withdrawn, and a leafy bush was fastened to the end of the rope and run rapidly up and clown the shaft. This so disturbed the accumulation of gas as to cause it to rise out of the shaft. Later this odd method of testing was improved upon through the discovery that a light inserted in a body of fire-dam p would produce a blue flame. Candles were used for this purpose, and, when fire-damp was thus discovered, brushing or some other primitive method of fanning was resorted to for driving out the gas. In some instances the gas was burned away, regardless of the danger thereby incurred. A man, wearing a well-moistened coat and a mask with glass spectacles, descended in the mine a few hours before each shift. With a long stick, to which was fastened a burning torch or candle, lie would crawl on the floor with the stick so raised that the light would sweep the roof and ignite the gas which it encountered. Blast fragmentation, determined using image analysis was correlated to drill monitoring parameters in an open pit operation. Average fragment size and 80% passing size showed strong correlation with specific energy of drilling as well as with torque, while the same passing sizes did not correlate well with the rate of penetration. It was also determined that the uniformity of fragmentation decreases with the specific energy of drilling. Thus drilling monitoring parameters appear to be valuable in determining the blastability of the rock mass, enabling adjustment of blast loading to respond to changing conditions in the rock mass.

A scraper-based block cave method has been successfully applied to extract the Lower orebody at Nchanga since the 1950s. Since inception, scraper drifts and service ways have been supported using steel arch sets fabricated to a specific design from high strength manganese steel To reduce costs and to improve productivity, trials commenced in 2002 using fibre reinforced shotcrete as an alternative support method. One of the areas, the 2420 8E 1C trial drift, was subjected to abutment loading for several months prior to undercutting and cave mining. Shotcrete installed exhibited minor cracking shortly after application but very little deterioration thereafter. Following the success of the trial, the application of fibre-reinforced shotcrete was extended to other drifts. This paper describes the application of fibre-reinforced shotcreteat Nchanga and outlines design and quality assurance methods employed.

Two of the most important economies in coal-washing are in the actual washing of the coal and in a proper lay-out to reduce to a minimum the cost of labour for handling and washing. A guarantee is usually required for turning out a washed coal containing not more than 2% of free dirt and a resulting refuse with not more than 2% of free coal; any plant that gives results within such guarantees can he considered economical, provided that there are no other losses during the washing process. Various drainage arrangements and washery lay-outs are illustrated and discussed with respect to drainage, bunkers, sieves, settling tanks and conveyors and two further points considered: siding accommodation, which may become quite important with washeries of large capacity especially when the coal is brought in railway-wagons; and the irregularity with which the coal arrives. Dolomite is a calcium carbonate sedimentary rock that can be found all over the world. In its calcined form it is employed for water treatment or as an additive in iron production. Calcined dolomite is produced at the Wünschendorfer Dolomitwerk GmbH in shaft furnaces (kilns). Because of an expansion of the mined deposit, significantly higher extraction costs were expected. Therefore, the existing upgrading processes for the kiln stone fraction had to be adapted and improved. This paper presents a process optimisation which allows for an increase of the yield of calcined dolomite by 10 % due to a redesign of the crusher circuit and by an additional 5 % due to a comprehensive characterisation of the kiln stone fraction itself. Here the interdependency between the pressure drop in the furnace during calcination and the size distribution of furnace stones was used to increase the amount of fine size fractions in the furnace feed without deterioration of the calcination process. The ldaho Cobalt Belt represents a unique geologic environment containing some of the largest known reserves of cobalt in the United States. Stratabound cobalt-copper-gold deposits formed within a sedimentary basin that was generated by the rifting of an Archean cratonic block. Host rocks for these deposits are the Early to Middle Proterozoic Yellowjacket Formation comprising a suite of clastic sediments, volcaniclastics, and mafic tuffs that accumulated in the intracratonic rift basin about 1.7 b.y. ago. Rifting was probably initiated during a regional heating and doming event that may date back to 1.8 b.y. ago. During this time, other rift basins were likely to have formed in the region. They probably represent the precursors of a much larger depositional environment having characteristics of an Atlantic- type or passive continental margin where younger formations of the Belt Supergroup were deposited. The Yellowjacket Formation has been subdivided in the Idaho Cobalt Belt into three genetic units representing various subenvironments of a deepwater clastic fan complex. A northwest- trending deep-basin structural trough accumulated fine-grained muddy sediments that were periodically interrupted by distal turbidites of the subaqueous fans. Subsequent progradation caused the deposition of coarser-grained clastics of the more proximal portions of the fan complexes. Submarine fan lobes were built across northwest-trending tectonically active basin growth faults. These in-basin structures caused a great deal of penecontemporaneous deformation within the Yellowjacket sequence. Northeast-trending fault zones formed an orthogonal set of fractures that controlled the shape and size of sub-basins, and were also an influence on lateral migration of dominantly fine-grained clastic material. The eruption of mafic tuffs at about 1.7 b.y. ago added a new component to the Yellowjacket sedimentary sequence. Around the Blackbird mine area these tuffs commonly occur either near the base or within some of the sandier sequences. Since most of the sand influxes were largely controlled by basinal tectonism, the tuffs were probably erupted during tectonically active periods of basin development. The dynamic nature of the sedimentary environment probably caused much of the tuffaceous component to be mixed with other clastics and even resedimented as volcaniclastic material. In time, the change to a higher energy sedimentation regime resulted in such a dramatic clastic dilution of the tuffs that they could not survive in the areas of the vents, and, if present, they must have been distributed elsewhere in the basin.

"IntroductionThe Bienfait Mine is operated by Bienfait Coal Company Ltd., one of the Luscar Limited group of companies. Situated 5 km southeast of the town of Bienfait, Saskatchewan, it can produce 2.0 million tonnes of lignite annually in addition to 158,000 tonnes of char from a carbonization plant located on the property. Geology The economically mineable coal seams of the Estevan area are found in the Ravenscrag Formation. The lignite-bearing sands, silts and clays were deposited in Early Tertiary age, in an inland sea centred in the Williston Basin of North Dakota. The top of the Ravenscrag is an erosional surface, overlain by Tertiary or Quarternary sands and gravels or glacial till. The regional structure is a gently plunging syncline which dips to the southeast at about 0.3 degrees. There are minor undulations in the Bienfait area which are due to differential subsidence during deposition. Sporadic faulting is probably a result of glacial pressures, and preglacial and glacial channels are responsible for washout zones and the abrupt irregular subcrop found in the area. There are two economic coal seams in the Bienfait area, an uppe; seam locally known as the Roche Percee, and a lower seam, the Estevan. Both seams have been extensively mined since lignite mining began in the area in the late 1800s. The Roche Percee remains only in a small portion of the Bienfait Mine and comprises a very minor portion of the reserves. It averages 1.74 m thick under 8.1 m of overburden. The till rests on top of the Roche Percee and due to weathering the seam is generally of poorer quality. The Estevan seam comprises the majority of reserves at Bienfait. The main seam which is being worked on consists of an upper bench averaging 2.75 m, a carbonaceous parting of 0.21 m, and a lower bench of 0.92 m. Overburden depth above this seam varies from 21.0 m to 38.0 m."

The objective of this paper is to present, from a practical perspective, a review of the most relevant maintenance procedures that are accepted or prescribed to be the most effective in optimising service life potential and to ensure continued safe use of steel wire ropes for shaft mining applications. The paper will address the most common operational issues encountered in the care and operation of shaft ropes for both conventional drum hoists and multi-rope friction winders. For each distinct maintenance procedure presented, a limited amount of theory is discussed to identify the underlying mechanisms at play that must be addressed and to emphasize the logical basis for the recommended course of action. It is recognised that each installation is unique and that the recommended maintenance procedures may not always be practical or cost effective from an operations standpoint under select circumstances, however the intent remains to promote industry best practices for the knowledge and benefit of the mine hoisting community, from experienced maintenance personnel to new entrants to the industry alike.

A utilização de fibras de naturais como agente de reforço tem sido amplamente estudada, pois é uma alternativa para o desenvolvimento de materiais sustentáveis. Assim esse trabalho tem por objetivo estudar o comportamento em flexão de compósitos de matriz poliéster reforçados com fibras de bagaço de cana de açúcar. Foram produzidos compósitos com adição de 0, 10, 20 e 30% em volume de fibra e, depois, testados em flexão em 3 pontos. Os resultados mostraram que adição das fibras reduziu a resistência à flexão, porém, mesmo com uma queda dessa propriedade, os resultados são similares aos encontrados na literatura.

As part of the Bureau of Mines effort to establish a comprehensive subsidence data base for subsidence technology development, subsidence and related data are being compiled for various mining, geological, and environmental situations. This publication presents data for a longwall mining operation in the Northern Appalachian Coal Region. Vertical displacements and relative faze positions are tabulated for 160 subsidence monuments. Measurements were taken 32 times during the 2 years it took to mine the two panels. Brief physiographic and geological descriptions of the mining site are presented along with a general account of the mining and subsidence monitoring methods.

Adequate and cost effective erosion control is an important component in most plans for reclamation of surface mined land. Despite the fact that much is known about erosion of agricultural lands, insufficient conclusive knowledge is available about erosion of reclaimed surface mined land. Our study was conducted to characterize the erodibility of reclaimed surface mine land relative to unmined cropped land, and to evaluate the accuracy of the universal soil loss equation (USLE) in estimating erosion from reclaimed soils. A rainfall simulator was used to measure runoff and erosion rates from plots at three Indiana surface mines. The relation of erosion of the reclaimed soils was not completely constant with that from the cropped soils. Significant differences in erodibility were observed between reclaimed and nonreclaimed top soils, as well as reclaimed topsoils and reclaimed subsoils.

Automatic control of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills has often been considered complex. Recent experiences at Century Zinc (worldÆs second largest open pit zinc mine) refute this. Together with operating knowledge and appropriate control techniques high quality control is achievable. In this application model-based, constraint, and multiple output control were employed. The control was implemented using standard blocks in the plant DCS. The resulting overall control strategy fulfils the operating objectives and controls the mill with minimal operator involvement over 95 per cent of the time. Previous campaigns using expert systems and complex DCS based control have lacked durability. Their fall into disuse is briefly discussed.

(New York meeting, February, 1912.) IN a paper, entitled A Uniform Method for the Assay of Copper Material for Gold and Silver,1 A. R. Ledoux invited the assayers of this country to contribute to a symposium, in which the results of their assays of given samples of copper-matte and metallic copper would be made comparable. This symposium 2 appeared about one year thereafter; and through it and its discussion, first became generally known the fact that the ,gold-yield by the all-fire method of assaying is usually higher than by the so-called combination (wet and dry) method, in which nitric acid is employed as a solvent for the copper. In the publication alluded to, the supposed cause of gold-losses in the latter method was declared to be the solvent action of copper nitrate, or of the reduction-products of the nitric acid, upon the gold. Up to a very recent date, gold has been held to be insoluble in pure nitric acid. (The solvent action of any chlorine present in the nitric acid must here properly be disregarded as belonging in the realm of carelessness. Among later allusions to this topic, W. R. Tan Liew 3 ascribes the solution of the gold in the combination-assay entirely to the action of nitrous acid at the high reaction-temperature of copper and nitric acid ; F. B. Flinn 4 a believes the low result in gold to be due exclusively to mechanical losses-finely-divided gold penetrating through the filter-paper-but presents no experimental data confirmative of this belief; and 0. Blindagens contra armas de fogo são de grande importância para proteção do homem, no contexto atual de violência urbana e conflitos armados. Destacam-se os sistemas de blindagem multicamada (SBMs), constituídos por materiais diferentes, pelo seu bom desempenho e menor peso. Um SBM típico é constituído de uma camada cerâmica frontal, uma segunda camada de compósito e uma camada posterior de metal dúctil. Apesar de serem tipicamente fabricados em materiais sintéticos, uma alternativa é a utilização de compósitos reforçados com fibras naturais como segunda camada. Este trabalho tem como objetivo verificar a eficiência de SBMs que utilizam compósitos de poliéster com 30%vol. de fibras ou tecido de sisal. Foram realizados ensaios balísticos com munição 7,62 mm, e verificou-se que os SBMs com fibras e tecido de sisal se enquadram no critério da norma internacional (NIJ 0101.06), de resistir ao impacto balístico e imprimir deformação menor que 44 mm no material de referência (plastilina), além de manterem sua integridade após o impacto.

O tráfego rodoviário de cargas está em franco crescimento, se diversificando nas rodovias e também nos grandes centros urbanos. O uso de novos implementos (carretas maiores e com maior capacidade de carga) resulta no travamento das vias urbanas, causando grandes transtornos à população. Em muitas cidades, o tráfego exige um novo planejamento urbano e construção de vias alternativas. Em Volta Redonda, RJ, estão sendo desenvolvidos projetos com alternativas de fluxos rodoviários, que buscam soluções para o transporte coletivo, bem como, para fluxo de veículos pequenos, médios e de cargas da cidade. O fluxo de caminhões que abastecem e escoam os produtos da CSN - Usina Presidente Vargas, tendem a crescer com o aumento de produtividade da planta de Cimentos e startup da planta de Aços Longos, com início de suas operações em Janeiro/14. Alternativas como a intensificação do uso de ferrovia são foco do trabalho da área de logística da CSN, porém não eliminam o uso do modal rodoviário.

Air decking has become a widely practised method internationally for modifying fragmentation results and providing cost savings from reduced explosive consumption. Duvha has been applying air deck technology to overburden and midburden blasting for a few years. A thorough evaluation of air decking at Duvha has been made by instrumenting a number of blasts and analysing costs from direct savings in reduced explosives costs to savings in improved dragline productivity.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated two real-time light-scattering dust monitors by measuring their response to Pittsburgh Seam coal dust and Arizona road dust (ARD). Both monitors, the model PDS-l, a personal dust sensor, and the model PCD-l, a digital dust indicator, are made in Japan by Sibata Scientific Ltd. Tests were conducted inside a laboratory aerosol chamber designed to maintain a uniform spatial distribution of the test dust. PDS-l and PCD-l measurements of concentrations for each test dust were averaged over 4-h test periods and compared with simultaneous gravimetric measurements. Both dust monitors responded linearly with mass concentration with both coal dust and ARD. However, the linear response of the PDS-l differed from that of the PCD-l for both dusts.
