A large number of brittleness concepts have been used in very different studies in the literature. One of them is the B1brittleness concept. In this study, the objective is to criticize the B1 brittleness concept on rotary blast hole drills. The B1 brittleness concept, the ratio of uniaxial compressive strength (sc) to tensile strength (sT), are widely used as a rock brittleness concept in the literature (Inyangand Pitt, 1990; Verhoef, P.N.W. 1993; Neil, D.M. et al.1994;Becker, et al.1984; Evans and Pomeroy, 1966; Göktan, R.M.1992; Kahraman, S. 2001; Yamaguchi, U. 1970; Verhoef, P.N.W. et al.1996; Bilgin, 1982; Howarth and Rowlands,1987; Howarth, D.F. et al. 1986). So, it was used as a rock brittleness concept in this article. The value of the B1brittleness concept is equal to the tangent of ß angle in the following graph. It was seen that more meaningful relationships could be obtained with the B2 brittleness, the under ?Area?(= 1/2(scxsT) = B2) under the curve, instead of tangent ß, (=B1), of the curve.

Stoping methods at the Homestake Gold Mine through 1978 had been traditional overhand cut-and-fill, shrinkage or square set. High costs, low-productivity and safety concerns prompted the mine to search for and adopt a "bulk mining" technique as a primary stoping method. Blasthole stoping had been successful but it is very development intensive, and was not suitable for the mine's accelerated mining program. Vertical Crater Retreat stoping was selected, and today accounts for over 50% of ore production. Case histories representing both the successes and failures of VCR stoping in the mine are discussed.

The periphery of the shaft, the dimensions of which were 16-1/2 feet wide by 21 feet long and 52 feet deep, was presplit (cracked) in the solid to a depth of 48 feet prior to full-depth sinking. Presplitting prevented overbreak in a fairly soft schist and provided sound self-supporting walls which required very little scaling.

Mientras que en la minería a tajo abierto es usual realizar planificación estratégica, en las operaciones subterráneas, debido a la complejidad de cada yacimiento, no existe un sistema normalizado para evaluar y optimizar la forma del área de la mina y su producción para obtener el valor real más alto. El objetivo del presente trabajo técnico es mostrar un sistema robusto capaz de optimizar y programar los depósitos subterráneos. Para ello, se evalúan múltiples escenarios de planes mineros en 3D en un plan minero de mina subterránea, analizando en poco tiempo diferentes variables, mostrando la robustez del planeamiento y analizando la incertidumbre asociada a las variables más relevantes. Se presenta un flujo de trabajo completo y práctico que ha mejorado los valores y reducido los riesgos de un proyecto subterráneo.

Worldwide iron ore feed grades are trending downwards and will continue to do so with the increasing difficulties of upgrading ores. This has led to operations looking for ways to capture current tailings that still contain valuable material. In the past, these were acceptable to dispose of, but this practice is no longer economically feasible. With the increasing trend of re-mining previous tailings deposits that could be decades old, new equipment designs have been introduced to upgrade current or historic beneficiation plants. These designs can effectively upgrade these tailings to saleable products.Outotec conducted test programs for upgrading iron ore tailings from flotation rejects, thickener underflow or tailings dumps on samples provided by customers around the globe. The studies utilised Outotec’s SLon vertically pulsating high-gradient magnetic separator in combination with preprocessing equipment such as low-intensity magnetic separation, screen or scrubber and flotation for downstream processing of the magnetic concentrate. A review of the equipment required to economically process these tailings is provided, along with testing data and industrial implementation examples. The effect of different operational and design parameters on Fe grade and recovery from processing each tailings sample has been highlighted.CITATION:Jain, R and Sherrell, I, 2015. This study aimed to identify a way to reduce the use of bentonite in the pelletization of magnetite. With this goal, different combinations of binders were compared to bentonite by examining the quality of pellets obtained by balling drum agglomeration. Pellets were subjected to routine tests that included simple compression of the wet and dry 105°C pellets, dropping wet pellets to determine their ability to survive handling and submitting pellets to thermal shock to determine how they tolerate drying and preheating. The best results use sodium silicate (1.5%) as a binder and show that it is possible to pelletize iron ore without using bentonite.

The Bureau of Mines studied toxic products produced by burning eight fire-resistant mines conveyor belts, a brattice cloth, and an electrical cable insulation obtained from laboratory-scale burning experiments under various air-flow conditions. Generally, CO product concentrations for most materials were noticeably higher then the NO2 and HC1 levels that were measured; also, no phosgene was detected. However, several of the fire-resistant belt samples yielded HC1 concentrations that were above the reported lethal level for 1/2 to 1-hour exposures, although these data were limited to flow conditions where air dilution effects were small; the belt materials that showed this behavior included samples of polyvinyl chloride, styrene butadiene, styrene butadiene blends, and a British neoprene which yielded the greatest amount of toxic vapor. In addition, some results are presented on the phosphoric acid concentrations that may be produced from the decomposition of ammonium dihydrogen phosphate when dispersed on a burning coalbed.

El yacimiento Cerro Corona constituye una mineralización de cobre y oro, que se encuentra emplazado en una roca intrusiva dioríticos y estratos gruesos de calizas. Para alcanzar el avance en las proyecciones de minado y de estabilidad de taludes en el Tajo del Cerro Corona y el agua en los acuíferos es necesario crear un sistema de drenaje, conformado por 6 pozos Operativos y 21 piezómetros activos que se encuentran en el tajo y en alrededores del mismo. El Sistema de Drenaje cumple la función de deprimir el nivel piezométrico de los acuíferos presentes en el tajo. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo describe los resultados de las mediciones de monitoreo de pozos de drenaje y piezómetros que conforman el sistema de drenaje e interpreta dos principales acciones que se ejercen sobre el sistema hidrogeológico en términos de balance (recarga por infiltración de agua de lluvia y salidas por extracciones del drenaje de agua subterránea) y la correspondiente respuesta hidrodinámica del sistema hidrogeológico (piezometría).

"INTRODUCTION Manufacturers and consumers of steel have come to realize during the past few years that cleanliness is of great importance in steels which must meet rigid specifications for various physical properties. Of equal importance is the consistent production of steel which is uniform in these properties. For maximum utility steels should be uniform not only from heat to heat, but also from ingot to ingot and within each ingot. In the manufacture of killed steels such as the higher carbon forging grades, uniformity as indicated by the usual chemical analysis in easy to obtain, provided that a normal top discard is taken, as is always the case in steels poured with hot—top practice. No such uniformity, however, holds true for the nonmetallic matter, which consists for the most part of the products of deoxidation of the steel.For a large tonnage of steels which go into articles manufactured by deep—drawing processes, killed steel has never been successfully applied because with the present deoxidation practice, low—carbon killed steel is almost invariably extremely dirty. To obtain the desired qualities for deep drawing, the steel is rimmed, — that is to say, deoxidized with manganese and perhaps a small amount of aluminum, — the resultant product being of high purity in the skin of the ingot, but very badly segregated at the center of the ingot, particularly in the upper—central section. This segregation necessitates a very heavy top discard, and one of the major segregates is carbon which renders the steel too hard to draw properly. If clean, low—carbon killed steel could be made successfully, much better ingot yields would be obtained than by the present rimming steel practice. Furthermore, banded structures and outside and inside seams, which are undoubtedly due in a large measure to blowholes in the ingot, are defects which are very difficult to control in rimmed steel. These defects would be minimized by clean killed steel."

ELASTIC constants of yttrium and eleven of the rare earth elements have been measured. This has been accomplished by measuring the propagation velocities of ultrasonic pulses. The velocity measurements were made by noting the elapsed time between an applied pulse and the appearance of successive echoes. The pulse-echo technique has become relatively common, and the basis of the measurement is outlined in several standard tests, e.g., Heuter and Bolt.1 Two important assumptions are made when using this method for the determination of elastic moduli. First, the pulse is assumed to propagate as a plane wave. To justify this assumption, the cross section of the test specimen should be large compared to the wave length of the transmitted pulse. For these measurements on the rare earth elements the minimum cross section wave length ratio was about 20. A second assumption which must be made when using polycrystalline specimens is that the grains are sufficiently numerous and randomly oriented so that the specimen may be approximated as elasti-cally isotopic. The grain size in the as-cast specimens which were used is believed to be sufficiently fine for this approximation, and the degree of preferred orientation is believed to be small. Supporting this viewpoint is the fact that elasticity measurements by the pulse-echo technique on as-cast specimens of other metals give results which are in satisfactory agreement with values obtained by other techniques. Hence, it is believed that the measured elasticity values for the rare earth elements are not apt to be seriously in error due to the assumption of elastic isotopy. The apparatus used in this determination was a modified Sperry Reflectoscope with a precisely calibrated time base circuit. Piezoelectric transducers were used both to generate the pulse and to detect the echoes. X-cut quartz crystals were used for the longitudinal modes, and Y-cut quartz crystals were used for the shear modes. Frequencies of 2.25 and 5 megacycles per sec were employed. Most of the specimens were 2.5 to 5.0 cm in length. Results Table I is a tabulation of the measured propagation velocities of longitudinal waves and of shear waves, together with densities obtained by Sped- ding, Daane, and Herrmann2 from lattice parameter measurements. The shear modulus, Poisson's ratio, and Young's modulus were calculated from the data in Table I through use of the following relationships: µ = pv32 [1] s=2-(vb/vs)2/2[1-(vb/vs)2] [2] and Y= 2µ(l+s) [3] where s is the shear modulus, Y is the Young's modulus, s is Poisson's ratio, p is the density, V0 is the longitudinal wave velocity, and v, is the shear wave velocity. The calculated quantities are shown in Table 11. Compressibility values can be computed from the relationship and the computed values may be compared with measured values obtained by Bridgman.8 Table III lists the data for such a comparison. The agreement is satisfactory, being particularly good for neodymi- um and gadolinium, poor for samarium, and intermediate for the other elements. Some variation is expected since Bridgman's measurements are isothermal, whereas the present measurements are adiabatic. In addition there may be some effect due to small variations in purity. Though most of the rare earth metals measured by Bridgman and all of the metals used in the present measurements were prepared at this laboratory, minor purity variations might exist since the samples came from different lots. The Factorial Model Experimenters are often interested in systems that are multi-factorial. A multi-factorial system is one whose output is believed or known to be dependent on the particular settings of several inputs, or factors. We can think of these factors as defining a space, with each point in this space corresponding to a particular set of factor settings. Experimenting can be thought of as exploring this space - finding out how the response of the system changes as factor settings are changed. There are several challenges in this exploration, among which are deciding what region to explore, designing an experiment that explores it most effectively, and describing the results of the exploration. This paper deals principally with the last of these; it shows how the factorial model can be used to describe how the response of the system changes as factor settings are changed. A strength of the factorial model is that it treats the factors as causes of change in the system's response and focuses on relations among these causes. In particular, the factorial model focuses on whether causes act independently on the system (in a sense to be explained below), or whether they interact. This is important because the experimenter generally seeks to control the system, and because control based on causes that act independently of other causes is relatively simple, whereas control based on causes that interact is more challenging. Also, mapping the space - finding out how the response of the system changes as factor settings are changed - will require less work if, during the exploration, it can be determined which of the causes act independently. For the sake of example, let us assume that the space we are exploring is three-dimensional, and that we have already defined, for each of the three factors, the range of interest. Let us consider all the ways in which the response of the system might depend on the settings of these three factors. In the simplest case, the response in this region does not depend on any of the factors. The response is constant throughout the space, at say, 80 units.

We live in a world of change and the mining industry is enjoying some of the most rapid changes today that have been seen in a long time, We'd like you to open your mind to a new concept in material handling. Figure # 1 Shows a new concept combining some of the proven application advantages of the power shovel with which we are all familiar, and applies the advantages of the dragline for the benefit of the user. First, the hydraulic excavator enjoys tooth forces of the shovel because the dipper is attached to the machine with a dipperstick and boom, and can often actually realize greater tooth forces than a shovel because of the prize action of the dipper in hard digging. Second, the hydraulic excavator enjoys the application advantage of the dragline because both the operator and the machine are up above, sitting on top where the operator oversees the excavation and the machine's operating work range is greatly increased.

Y., (communication to the Secretary *).-There are two points regarding gun erosion on which I want to say a few words: The first is about the analogy to hardening of wire by drawing and the second the possible role played by thermal conductivity of the metal. The ductile metals do not necessarily become brittle when cold-worked as it is possible to draw copper from 3. in. in diameter soft rod down to the finest hair wire without annealing. This results, as stated in the paper, informing a hardened core with a very hard skin. The electrical conductivity is depressed some 3 per cent. and the tensile strength nearly tripled. A soft copper wire 0.08 in. in diameter and 6 in. long may be twisted 150 or more turns before the wire will snap under torsion. A hard-drawn wire will break after perhaps a dozen twists, the skin breaking down at one spot. Just wiping the wire with a cloth clamp with dilute nitric acid has a remarkable effect in increasing the number of twists without appreciably lowering the tensile strength, showing the skin to be very thin. On the other hand, pickling the rod, from which the wire is to be drawn, in dilute nitric acid also greatly increases the number of twists which can be applied to the resulting wire. This indicates that the copper oxide scale produced when the wire bar is rolled hot is more or less rolled into the rod and may have much to do with the skin effect. We also know that if the conditions of drawing are not correct, the heat of deformation in the die may produce quite an annealing effect. The application of this analogy to what occurs in a gun to produce the effects noted offers some difficulty. The second point is that as the temperature of the surface of the gun bore has undoubtedly a great deal to do with the amount of erosion, one natural remedy would be to conduct the heat away fast enough to keep this temperature within desired limits. This brings up the question of the thermal conductivity of the metal of which the gun is made. We know that the conductivity of pure metals is greatly altered by alloying and that the alloy is usually, though not always, lower in conductivity than the metal before alloying. This is interesting when it is considered that the high-nickel and manganese-steel alloys show greater erosion as stated. Would it not be instructive to study the question from the point of view of heat conducted away from the eroded surface?

To explain in any depth the industrial relations of Broken Hill I believe that it is necessary to trace some of the many happenings that created the present industrial climate. While appreciating that our relations with the local industry are relatively good, it must be pointed out that to preserve and improve this present situation a duty is owed to everyone connected with the industry (workers, share- holders, etc.) by management and unions to see that just and reasonable agreements are found for any disputes. If the companies ever take the local position for granted it would soon die, killed by someone who may get some short term benefit, but who would lose something of incalculable worth in the long run. Este trabalho investigou o efeito do hidrogênio nas propriedades do aço 2,25Cr-1Mo-0,25V. As amostras foram envelhecidas a 600°C por 100h e 600h. Uma parte dos corpos de prova foi deixada somente na condição envelhecida e conduzidas ao ensaio de tração. Outras partes dos corpos de prova foram carregados com hidrogênio, sob tensão elástica e sem tensão aplicada, antes de serem conduzidos ao ensaio de tração. Análises microestrutural e fractografias foram realizadas via microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Os corpos de prova envelhecidos por 600h não apresentaram significante diferença entre as tensões de escoamento e máxima, entre os corpos de prova carreagados com hidrogênio e não carregados (envelhecidos). Os corpos de prova envelhecidos por 100h e carregados com hidrogênio, no entanto, apresentaram uma queda nas tensões de escoamento e máxima quando comparadas com os corpos de prova somente envelhecidos.

Frothers play a crucial role in sulphide and PGM ore flotation recovery, and AECI Mining Chemicals studies on PGM ores have shown significant flotation kinetic increases with the optimal frother-collector combinations. Using Senfroth 200 as the industry baseline, remarkable kinetic increases were observed with AECI Mining Chemicals developed frothers in the first concentrate. Even in the worst-case scenarios, 4E PGM recovery increased by 5% at a slightly higher concentrate grade. It is important not to limit frother dosage to a fixed value. Instead, enough frother should be added to maintain a stable bench float, measuring the dosages by frother volume before and after tests. Frothers can be specialized blends and their importance should not be underestimated. The results produced by formulating and innovating frothers to address specific industry challenges have been encouraging. Testing a frother on a plant scale does not have to be as daunting as with collectors, enabling the identification of the best frother-collector combinations at an industrial scale. AECI Mining Chemicals bench scale testwork has motivated plant-scale trials that have successfully transitioned to commercialization. This paper compares the results from metallurgical and froth stability tests and shows that occasionally frothers that have a less stable froth can have improved valuable mineral recoveries, while still exhibiting better drainage for reduced entrainment and mass pull. It was shown that caution should be used when relying only on simplified froth stability tests in the evaluation of new frothers.

About 65% of the U.S. coal production (835 n tons was surface mined. A similar proportion of the Illinois basin's production (112 m tons) is also surface mined. The state of Illinois is the third largest producer of surface mined coal in the United States, after Wyoming and Kentucky. The Illinois coal basin encompasses Illinois, southwestern Indiana, and western Kentucky, as shown in Figure 1 (dotted lines). The estimated surface mineable coal resources in the basin amount to about 27 billion tons, and about 69 m. tons of coal is surface mined annually (Tab1e I).

The different samples of brick examined were Grecian magnesite, American magnesite; silica brick and coke-oven tiling made in Belgium and used in retort coke-ovens. The Grecian magnesite was furnished by a New Pork party. The American magnesite and the silica brick were furnished by a manufacturing company in Pittsburgh. From these brick were made cylindrical cores, '79 inches long and 15/8 inches in diameter. At one end of each was drilled a hole about 1/4-inch in diameter and 11/4 inches long, into which the thermometer was inserted during the experiment. Conductivity.—The apparatus used for determining the conductivity, as shown in Fig. 1, is a sheetriron drum, 18 inches in diameter and 8 inches high. In the center is a little combustion-chamber with walls of split fire-brick, 39 inches square and about 6 inches high. The fire-brick, however, pass through the drum to the table on which the drum stands. The cores are placed horizontally, half-way between the top and bottom of drum and on the line of diameters at right angles.
