The availability of concentrated brines rich iodide, bromide, chloride, sodium, magnesium and calcium ions has led to extensive chemical manufacturing operations in Michigan. The brines, ranging 1,000 to 8,000 feet below the earth's surface, are the remnants of ancient oceans which periodically covered and receded over the land area which is now Michigan. After pumping the brine to the surface, iodine and bromine are extracted via an oxidative process. Iodine and bromine find application in catalysts, disinfectants, flame retardants, oil field fluids, film, and gasoline additives. Addition of alkalinity to the brine precipitates magnesium hydroxide, used in high quality refractories needed for steel manufacture. The brines are also the country's primary source of calcium chloride, employed in ice and dust control.

The polymerisation of silica is found to interfere with thickening of leach pulps at Risdon. Hydroxyl ion and fluoride ion are catalysts for this reaction. Stability may be obtained by the presence of aluminium or ferric iron.INTRODUCTIONAt Risdon it has been a matter for satisfaction that, although the concentration, of silica in leach solutions is appreciable, it has ,given relatively little cause for anxiety.However the margin of safety is small and some intermittent difficulty in thickening leach residues during the last few years has prompted a further investigation, certain parts of which are described here since they may be of general interest.Leaching and ClassificationThe method of leaching which is practised at Risdon has been described in, two previous articles, by W. C. Snow (1936) and S. W. Ross (1949) to whiCh the reader is referred for detail. Continuous leaching is practised, the circuit solution flowing through five air agitated pachucas in series, to tlie first of which calcine is added. The circuit solution, which also enters the first pachuca, consists of spent electrolyte from, the electrolytic cells and contains 90 -gm. of free sulphuric acid per litre. About 80 per cent of the solublezinc oxide is extracted from the calcine in the first pachuca, at a pH value of 1-1 (7 gm.H2S04/1 at 55 to 60°C. In the later pachucas the leaching rate decreases sharply. The leach pulp which leaves the 'last pachuca contains an average of 17 gm. of free acid per litre, corresponding to a pH of 1.7; but, owing to variations in extraction, the end point fluctuates between 2.5 and 0·3 gm. free acid per litre (pH:> 1·5 to 2.5). The average flow through the plant is 1,250,000 gallons per day, which corresponds to a production of 300...

The removal of the mud sheaths that are deposited against the faces of productive oil sands during rotary drilling is one of the important problems confronting operators, especially in semidepleted fields where formation pressures are low. Unless the mud sheaths behind the perforated oil strings and liners are removed and the sands exposed, oil cannot enter the wells. Consequently much oil that otherwise might be produced from low-pressure sands is trapped and never recovered. Various types of perforation washers, down swabs, and agitators are used at present for breaking down the mud sheaths and removing the disintegrated clay particles from wells after the perforated Wipes have been inserted. Mechanical methods for removing mud sheaths are :quite satisfactory, but prompted by the request of certain .operators in the California oil fields Bureau of Mines engineers have conducted a series of laboratory tests with the view of developing a chemical method for removing mud sheaths in oil wells that will be applicable to field conditions. This report describes the laboratory work and deals generally with a chemical method for removing the mud sheath, cake, or plaster deposited against the face of oil sands in drilling wells end in wells that, on being shut in temporarily during periods of overproduction of oil, are conditioned for the shutdown .period by filling the well opposite the producing formations with mud fluid. The method described in this report was devised in the San Francisco laboratory of the Bureau of Mines and, as far as the writers have been able to determine, differs from any chemical method ever used in actual wells. The method proposes to add a small amount of calcium carbonate (preferably pulverized limestone) to the mud fluids before they are introduced into the wells so that the resultant mud sheaths will be susceptible to disintegration by acid solutions when it is desired to expose the faces of the oil sands in the wells.

Sin embargo, la magnitud alcanzada por las transferencias del canon minero y de las regalías mineras, evidenció la debilidad del Estado en sus tres niveles de gobierno para gestionar los crecientes recursos de inversión que hoy dispone. Por ello, el presente trabajo plantea identificar los factores y problemas potenciales que limitan una eficiente gestión de los recursos, provenientes del canon minero y de las regalías mineras y así desarrollar alternativas estratégicas eficaces, realistas y viables para optimizar el uso del canon minero y regalías mineras en las comunidades beneficiadas con dichos ingresos y lograr de esta manera su desarrollo humano sostenible.

The lack of control of As and Sb compounds from copper smelters and converters has rendered some chalcopyrite containing arsenopyrite, stibnite and tetrahedrite minerals unusable for metal extraction. In the present investigation, we have studied the carbothennic reduction of Portuguese chalcopyrite mineral concentrate in the presence of lime/CaS04 and CaS04/Si02. Thermodynamic equilibrium calculations were performed to study the distribution of As and Sb between metal and the CaO-Si02-FeO slag phase. The phase equilibrium calculations also show the effect of oxygen partial pressure on the increase in the volume of the slag phase, which helps in lowering the copper metal formation temperature and facilitates a better separation between metal, matte and slag. The reduction reaction kinetics was studied between 850°C and 1100 °C, and the phases formed were identified by X-ray powder diffraction and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The importance of this research for using recycled matte, lean and rich minerals with As and Sb is also explained.

The high cost and throughput-limiting nature of comminution forms a strong motivation for research directed at improving the efficiency of the process. Building on a ten year background of fundamental charge motion research, a new formal UCT flotation and communication group has been formed. The group is also moving strongly into the field of milling circuit modelling and simulation, based on close links formed with the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) of Australia, and an international collaborative research programme.

TEE purpose of this article is not only to describe the plant and method of cyaniding the Treadwell concentrates, but to present some of the results of the experimental work obtained in the past three years for the Alaska-Treadwell Gold Mining Co., at Douglas Island, Alaska., under the direction of F. W. Bradley, Consulting Engineer, and Robert A. Kinzie, General Superintendent, of the affiliated companies. At the time the experimental work was undertaken the concentrates were being shipped to the smeltery at Tacoma, Wash., and the cost for treatment of 3-oz. (gold) concentrates was $11.95 per ton, divided as follows: Smelting-charges, . $4.00 Loading, freight, insurance, etc., 2.89 Interest due to time lost in transit and in settlement, . 0.05 Loss due to settlement for 95 per cent. of the gold at $20 per ounce, 5.01 Total, . . $11.95 From the experimental work described later, it was estimated that 96 per cent. extraction could be made by treatment on the ground, and that the cost, when treating 80 tons per day, would be $3.25 per ton, divided as follows; Per Day. SHG zinc was extruded in the temperature range 110" to 350°C and the strain rate range 0.05 to 5 sec-1 The strain rate/flow stress/temperature results were analyzed using a power sinh stress relationship. When temperature changes due to the heat of deformation and to heat losses are neglected, the exponent of the sinh function of the stress is 5.6, and the apparent activation energy of deformation is 28 kcal per mole. When these changes are taken into account, the exponent decreases to 4.7 and the activation energy to 23 + 2 kcal per mole. The corrected stress exponent and activation energy are in very good agreement with published values obtained from creep experiments, and suggest that the hot extrusion of zinc is controlled by a mechanism involving self-diffusion. When the extrusion and creep data are compared using a Zener-Hollomon parameter and either a sinh or an exponential stress term, an appreciable offset is observed, which may be due to the difference in impurity content. For a given set of extrusion conditions the ram speed, maximum pressure, and initial temperature can also be correlated using a Zener-Hollomon parameter and a sinh pressure term. THE deformation of metals at temperatures over about one-half the absolute melting temperature has been extensively studied at creep strain rates. By contrast, relatively little work has been carried out on the behavior of metals at hot working strain rates. Most of the latter investigations have been performed using simulative methods, such as hot torsion and hot compression, in which the friction conditions and temperature rise during deformation may differ appreciably from those existing under industrial conditions. Recently, however, Wong and Jonas1 used a scaled-down industrial process to determine the stress and temperature dependence of the strain rate during the extrusion of aluminum. In such tests, the effects of friction and adiabatic heating are closer to those produced in industrial operations. Also, with regard to the testing of materials of limited ductility such as zinc, hot compression and hot torsion do not permit the attainment of true strains as large as the deformations usually applied commercially. The present study was undertaken to investigate the extrusion behavior of Special High Grade (SHG) zinc. The detailed objectives were: 1) to establish the stress and temperature dependence of the strain rate with and without a consideration of adiabatic heating, 2) to study the pressure and temperature dependence of the ram speed, and 3) to investigate the microstruc- tural changes occurring during the deformation. The last aspect of the investigation will be covered in a separate paper. The treatment described below differs from that of Wong and Jonas in that the adiabatic temperature rise during deformation is taken into account, and the calculation of the mean equivalent strain rate is based on the redundant as well as on the homogeneous work. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Rods from two shipments of continuously cast SHG zinc* were used in the investigation. The composition *Supplied by courtesy of Cominco Ltd. range of the impurities present, as given by the supplier, was: Pb: 0.0013 to 0.0023 pct, Fe: 0.001 pct max Cd: 0.0001 to 0.0006 pct, Cu: 0.0002 to 0.0005 pct, Ti: 0.0001 pct max; thus, by balance, zinc valued from 99.9963 to 99.9966 pct. The as-received rods were machined into billets having a nominal diameter of 1.56 in. and a nominal length of 1½ in.; longer billets up to 4 in. in length, were also used to investigate special aspects. The as-machined rods were annealed at 400°C for 24 hr and slowly cooled. This treatment produced a columnar grain structure, with a grain size of about $ by 2½ cm which was appreciably larger than the as-cast one. A 150-ton, direct extrusion, vertical press was used. Ram displacement and force were recorded continuously against time. A constant flow control valve permitted the maintenance of a range of preselected ram speeds up to in. per sec. The selected speed was held constant, irrespective of the required force, as long as the load developed was below the maximum available. Strain gages were used to determine the force; the gages were calibrated before and after each testing period with a 200,000-lb capacity load cell. Further details of the experimental equipment can be found in Ref. 2. The billets were preheated for 90 min in the extrusion container, which was well insulated so as to minimize temperature gradients. This period was sufficient for the billet to reach a uniform temperature at all temperatures between 110" and 350°C. A square-shoulder die having a 0.290-in. diam central hole was used. The extrusion ratio was 30 to 1. This is equivalent to a reduction in area of 96.7 pct, an elongation of 2900 pct, and a true strain of 3.4. The ram speed was varied over two orders of magnitude from 0.0027 to 0.26 in. per sec. The ram was water-cooled during most of the tests, although some experiments were conducted with a preheated, uncooled ram. High Pressure Grinding Roll (?HPGR?) technology is applied in a broadening range of minerals processing applications for relatively wet or moist materials. HPGR grinding of dry material or involving drying and air classification is more common, for example in cement manufacturing. A number of minerals processing plants are also operating with dry material, either due to process reasons, such as considerations of preceding or subsequent process stages, or as dictated by local conditions of arid areas and scarcity of water. The present world-wide expectation of decreasing availability of water supply urges us to look for alternatives that minimize water consumption. Recently established and envisaged future HPGR applications with dry ores have indicated that the technology of dry crushing and classification as practiced in cement and limestone grinding can be applied in minerals processing. Moreover, dry technology could very well be applied for generating a final fine product at sizes near or below 100 microns, as may be required for beneficiation by, for instance, flotation, magnetic separation or tank leaching. Dry HPGR grinding requires special attention in maintaining suitable process economics, when considering power input in grinding, drying and classification. In some cases, HPGR capacity and roll surface wear life may be negatively affected by a lack of moisture in the feed. This publication summarizes some of the features of, and experiences in dry HPGR applications. This includes design aspects of the classification system and discussion of the wear protection of the roll surfaces. The paper also includes examples of operational experiences of dry practices in minerals processing and cement plants.

The first signal system used in the Homestake mine between the cagemen and hoisting engineers was a mechanical one. It consisted of small cables or jointed steel rods hung in the cage compartments and counterbalanced with weights or springs. These cables or rod strings were connected to the mechanically operated gongs at the engineers' positions by means of bell cranks and steel wires. At the various stations the bell lines were also fitted with bell cranks and connected levers, so that the cagemen could operate the bells from the stations when they were handling rock or other material and not riding on the cages. Such a system was inherited from the days before extensive electrical development. It served quite well for shallow shafts, but for depths of a thousand feet or more it was very slow and cumbersome. It required consider-able muscular effort to operate it quickly, because of the inertis of its great weight and also because of frictional resistance. The maintenance cost was quite high because of the many wearing parts.

En este sentido, el texto señala el uso de SDT(software) como aplicación informática decuada para el cálculo de sostenimiento en túneles y galerías mineras que suministra una respuesta a las necesidades de proyectistas e ingenieros mineros. Dicho software se basa en cerchas metálicas con capacidad de deslizamiento (perfiles THN), cerchas de perfil HEB, pernos de anclaje y hormigón proyectado en túneles y galerías mineras que utiliza el método “Convergencia – Confinamiento”, procedimiento de referencia en el cálculo y diseño de sostenimiento en excavaciones subterráneas, con las premisas de sección circular, presión sobre el sostenimiento uniforme y el campo de presiones hidrostático.

Atualmente, tecidos de fibras sintéticas como a aramida (Kevlar®) e o polietileno (Dyneema®) têm sido os preferidos para proteção balística contra munições leves, e para integrar sistemas de proteção contra calibres superiores, como o 7,62 mm. Porém, por apelos econômicos, ambientais e da disponibilidade limitada destes produtos, materiais alternativos têm sido testados. Neste cenário, destacam-se os compósitos reforçados com fibras naturais, que têm demonstrado bom desempenho balístico. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o desempenho individual de compósitos reforçados com fibras naturais de curauá, quando submetidos ao impacto balístico com munição 7,62 mm. Foram executados ensaios balísticos, medindo-se a energia do projétil absorvida pelos materais, e os resultados tratados estatisticamente por Anova e teste de Tukey. Mostrou-se que estes compósitos têm potencial para substituir as fibras sintéticas em sistemas de blindagem para proteção pessoal, com a vantagem de serem materiais leves, de baixo custo, nacionais, de ampla disponibilidade e ambientalmente corretos.

This volume summarizes the contract work performed over a nine-month period by Westinghouse Electric Corporation on a Cost Plus Fixed Fee Contract for the Department of Interior's Bureau of Mines. The contract has been extended primarily to carry out improvements recommended for equipment produced under the contract for communicating with and locating trapped miners. These improvements will enhance the performance and utility of this equipment for operational use in actual mine emergencies. An additional complete set of the equipment will also he furnished to the Bureau under this extension. The work of the basic contract was to design, produce and test hardware in accordance with the Westinghouse response to a Bureau of Mines Request for Proposal which was based technically on recommendations of a study performed for the Bureau by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). BRITISH Guiana, Great Britain's only South American colony, may be reached by very comfortable steamers, both from North America and Europe. The trip from North American Atlantic ports requires about 12 to 14 days; that from Europe about 18 to 20 days. A number of steamship lines, including Canadian, American, and Dutch, have regular sailings between North America and British Guiana, with calls en route at various interesting ports in the West Indies and northern South America. Moreover, several lines, including British, German, and French, have steamships operating regularly between Europe and the West Indies. Indeed, so popular have the West Indian voyages become in recent years that, during the winter months, special cruises in considerable number are organized for many vessels that ply in the trans-Atlantic service in the summer. A trip to British Guiana, therefore, has become a delightful experience. After visits at the various attractive Leeward and Windward islands and Trinidad, the approach to the low, flat, British Guiana coast, with its muddy coastal waters extending for many miles offshore, is somewhat of a contrast. Arrival in Guiana waters is signalled by the appearance of the modern high-power Demerara Light, located "on a shoal about twelve miles from the mouth of Demerara river. From this point, if the tide is right, a pilot takes the steamer across the bar, eight to ten miles offshore, and into Georgetown harbour. At high tide, the water above the bar ranges from 15 to 18 feet in depth, depending on whether it is neap tide or spring tide; at low tide, the corresponding depths are 9 to 11 feet. As the bar is of soft mud, however, it is usually possible for vessels to pass over it with a draught of about two feet in excess of that indicated by the tide tables. Upon nearing the shore, one sees first the Georgetown wireless towers, then the light-house and the tall chimneys of sugar mills and of various factories in Georgetown, and finally the palms and other tropical trees and the houses of Georgetown itself along the sea shore and the east bank of Demerara river. Extensive wharves operated by various exporting and importing companies stretch along the river bank and activity prevails in Georgetown harbour. The principal exports are sugar, rice, gold, diamonds, bauxite, balata, lumber, fruit and other tropical products. The imports are food-stuffs, wearing apparel, and manufactured materials of many kinds.

ABSTRACT: A three dimensional constitutive law for swelling rock is presented. It can be applied to the osmotic swelling of mudstone as well as to the swelling of rocks containing anhydrite. It describes the development of time-dependent strains and stresses due to swelling considering elastic and viskoplastic behaviour. Furthermore an anisotropic swelling behaviour can be considered. This constitutive model was implemented within a numerical computation program according to the finite element method and calibrated on the basis of the results of measurements in the investigation drift of the Freudenstein tunnel which is completely located in the unleached Gypsum Keuper. A parameter combination could be found which results in a good agreement between numerical solutions and results of measurements. Therewith an analysis procedure which enables the design of tunnels in swelling rock is available. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird ein dreidimensionales Quellgesetz vorgestellt, das nach derzeitigem Kenntnisstand sowohl auf das osmotische Quellen von Tonsteinen als auch auf das Quellen anhydrithaltiger Ton- beziehungsweise Schluffsteine anwendbar ist. Das Stoffgesetz wurde in ein Finite-Elemente-Programm implementiert und anhand von Meßergebnissen des im unausgelaugten Gipskeuper liegenden Untersuchungsstollens des Freudensteintunnels kalibriert. Es ist gelungen, eine Kennwertkombination zu finden, mit der alle Meßergebnisse gut beschrieben werden können. Damit steht ein Bemessungsverfahren für Tunnel in quellfähigem Gebirge zur Verfügung. RÉSUMÉ: Dans l'article présent un loi de gonflement à trois dimensions est présenté, qui peut être appliqué aussi bien au gonflement osmotique de l'argile compactée q'au gonflement de l'argile compactée ou du limon compacté contenant de l'anhydrite. Le loi de comportement était implémenté dans un programme numérique d'éléments finis et calibré avec des résultats de mesures de la galerie de recherche du tunnel de Freudenstein, situé dans le Keuper de gypse non lessivé. On est réussi à trouver une combinaison de paramètres avec laquelle tous les résultats de mesures peuvent être bien décrits. Par ce moyen, une méthode de dimensionnement existe pour des tunnels dans de la roche capable de gonfler.

A new cell construction was designed for the study of the electrochemical behaviour of additives in conditions that simulate real copper, electrorefining. The behaviour of gelatine and thiourea was studied by applying different electrochemical methods, i.e. polarization resistance and voltametric measurements. In this study, individual galvanostatic electrolysis experiments were carried out for 120 hours. The organic additives were introduced to the electrolyte at certain intervals and their concentration was varied in the range &om zero to four ppm. An optical microscope was applied for the examination of copper cathode deposit microstructures. The results show that gelatine has a polarizing effect on the deposition potential of copper whereas even small amounts of thiourea depolarize the electrodeposition of copper. The maximum inhibitor efficiency of gelatine was obtained at a gelatine concentration of slightly lower than two ppm. When both gelatine and thiourea were present in the electrolyte, the depolarizing effect of thiourea exceeded completely the polarizing effect of gelatine. If chloride ions were added to gelatine and thiourea containing electrolyte, the electrochemical behaviour of the system was altered drastically. Chloride ions resulted in the prevailing of polarization effect caused by gelatine while the depolarizing effect of thiourea disappeared in this system. The polarizing effect of gelatine increased until chloride ion concentration of 30 ppm was reached. Also, the above electrochemical phenomena could be detected in the optical examination of copper deposit microstructure.
