En ese sentido, el presente texto señala el análisis económico y tecnógico de Latinoamérica frente a la demandas de tres potencias industriales (EE.UU., Europa Occidental y Japón) que, al mismo tiempo son los principales clientes. Para mantener su ritmo de desarrollo industrial, Latinoamérica necesita divisas provenientes de la exportación de materias primas, donde la conservación de los mercados y el aprovechamiento de los mismos. Asimismo, es necesario un mayor grado de elaboración y purificación de materias primas y que la producción de productos minerales sea de alta calidad a precios competitivos.

Thiess Pty LtdÆs Australian Mining business unit used 7.6 PJ of energy in the 2007/2008 financial year. This represented more than 85 per cent of Thiess Pty LtdÆs total energy use and therefore meant that the Australian Mining business unit is required to conduct energy efficiency assessments and report publicly on the outcomes by December 2008 under the Federal GovernmentÆs Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO) Act. Thiess Pty Ltd has a policy commitment to sustainable development throughout its operations. This includes minimisation of its carbon footprint and the Australian Mining business unit has a strong focus on efficiency in all of its operations. It approached the energy efficiency assessment as an opportunity to further improve and build on its energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction focus in the business. As a mine contractor, Thiess faced a number of challenges in designing an assessment process that would be both effective and efficient to deliver. For example, unlike most other companies involved in the Energy Efficiency Opportunities program, the energy use associated with the Australian Mining business unit is not fixed to any single geographic location in Australia. Mining vehicles are moved from site to site according to the specific requirements of mine owners and the timing associated with the commencement and completion of contracts. Thiess departed from a traditional æsite by siteÆ based assessment and designed a ærepresentative assessmentÆ approach that involved detailed investigation of data across all sites and a focused assessment on a single site.Data and analysis was an essential part of the assessment and indicators at company, mine and site level were essential in identifying opportunities and tracking progress. Forty-six potential energy saving opportunities were identified and four of these are currently being implemented. The projects being implemented are: payload management, automating mobile lighting equipment, plant idle time management, and turbo idle downtime. The potential savings from the four major projects that have been identified are approximately 150 800 GJ/annum, equivalent to 10 600 tonnes of CO2-e/annum with a simple payback period of less than two years. Beyond the fuel savings however, there are a number of other benefits from the assessment, including operational efficiency, reduced maintenance costs and even a potential reduction in the number of vehicles required to complete the work. The EEO assessment has significantly increased the importance and urgency of energy efficiency and facilitated the sharing of good practice across all Thiess operations. Not only have four projects been adopted for immediate implementation but a further pipeline of projects is available for future possible implementation. This case study describes: how Thiess conducted its assessment including the use of energy data and indicators, the opportunities identified that are currently being implemented, and the lessons learnt and how other organisations can use these to improve their approach to energy efficiency assessments. This case study is a more comprehensive version of a case study developed for the Commonwealth Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism. The assessment results reported in this case study are drawn from the Thiess Energy Efficiency Opportunities Report 2008.

A metodologia aplicada para elaboração do projeto foi o PDCA, onde foi desenvolvido um novo modelo de bucha que evita o descarte precoce da peça, otimizando a vida útil e consequentemente reduzindo o custo com materiais de desgaste de perfuração.

A utilização de lasers de pulsos ultracurtos é uma alternativa para a realização de microusinagem em superfícies de metais, com aplicações diversas em inúmeros segmentos industriais, além das áreas aeronáutica, aeroespacial e naval, onde há crescente preocupação com a eletrônica embarcada. Neste trabalho foram realizadas microusinagens em superfícies de titânio utilizando laser de pulsos ultracurtos de femtossegundos. Tal processo resultou em mínima transferência de calor para o material, evitando assim e deformação superficial da chapa de titânio e a formação de material ressolidificado na região ablacionada, que são inconvenientes presentes na utilização do laser chaveado de pulsos longos da ordem de nanossegundos. Foram executados três tipos de microusinagens, com variações nas distâncias entre as linhas usinadas. Foi verificado ainda que a molhabilidade aumenta quando há o aumento da distância entre linhas usinadas. Finalmente, para a alteração da superfície com uma ínfima remoção de material, constatou-se que a utilização de lasers de pulsos ultracurtos proporcionam grandes benefícios para a integridade do material ablacionado.

Full-seam mining with continuous mining machines in dirty coal beds may increase loss of coal in the washery refuse. At one mine mentioned in this report the loss of salable coal was increased sixfold. Cleaning trials were made on three samples of jig refuse in a dense-medium pilot plant to demonstrate the application of this process to the recovery of coal from waste. These tests demonstrated that coal could be separated from impurity with the same degree of sharpness obtained in treating raw coal by dense medium. However, the recovery efficiency achieved in treating refuse averaged distinctly lower than that possible with raw coal because of the greater proportion of intermediate-density material in the feed and the lower yield of clean coal.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Com¬mittee of the Coordinating Research Council (CFC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 4/ Further re¬ports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of l941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. The present report presents analytical data for 3,011 samples, representing the products of 113 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during July and August 1946. As in previous surveys the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 1,585 samples, 311 items, and 99 -brands; premium-price, 1,422 samples, 280 items, and 94 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. Geological study of the Prony Nilaterite (New Caledonia) began in 1969 and included drilling, geological mapping and laboratory studies. The deposit is the product of weathering of basic rocks. From top to bottom, the following zones can be distinguished: a compact ferruginous cover; ore associated with yellow laterite, containing 1.0-1.5% Ni and low in impurities (SiO2, Mg); an intermediate silicated ore containing 1.3-2.0% Ni and higher percentages of impurities; garnierite ore much richer in nickel (2-4%) but high in SiO, and Mg contents (Mg up to 20%) ; and parent rock, largely peridotites. Distinction between types of ore is essential because the high grade ore (silicated and granierites) is penalized for its high Mg contents that demand additional acid treatment. All studies made distinguish two types of ore, laterite and silicated.

Separation and identification of minerals composing the Tunisian silica sands have been conducted by acid etching and hot filtration/sedimentation (HFS) without affecting the quartz component. It was found that the hot acid etching process is an effective method to separate quartz and clay minerals in the silica sand. The SEM micrographs of the silica sand show rough surface and some cracks with irregular shapes. The surface becomes clean and smooth after acid etching process. After chemical dissolution, the clay minerals were recovered by hot filtration following by sedimentation at low temperature. FT-IR, EDS maps, and secondary electron (SE) analyses of separated clay minerals reveal the presence of Fe2O3, montmorillonite, and kaolinite minerals. The LIBS analysis of clay minerals shows the presence of Al, Fe, Ca, Al, and Mg. The sequential etching process can be introduced in the purification methods as an effective way to separate quartz from clay minerals.

"El presente trabajo describe los aspectos geoambientales de la cuenca del río Huaura, ubicada al norte de la región de Lima con el fin de establecer una línea de base geoambiental. Dicha cuenca destaca por la actividad agroindustrial, la minería representada por minas como Raura y Ucchucchaucua, la presencia de áreas geoturísticas como los baños termo-medicinales de Churín y los centros poblados como Huacho, Huaura y Oyón. La caracterización geodinámica y el análisis de susceptibilidad a movimientos en masa e inundaciones, han permitido establecer que las zonas más susceptibles a estos procesos se encuentran en los distritos de: Sayán, Naván, Andajes, Pachangara, Oyón, Maray, Santa Leonor, Caujul, Huaura, Huacho, Leoncio Prado e Ihuarí. En este sentido, el estudio geambiental señala que la zona más impactada está ubicada en Caujul (alrededores de la mina abandonada Santa Rita) y que se debe monitorear los siguientes sectores: Uchucchacua, Churín e Iscaycruz en Oyón; y Vilcahuara, Sayán, Huamboy Grande, Chiuchín y Huacho, en Huaura; donde en algunos casos se ha superado los límites permisibles para aguas y sedimentos de normativas internacionales, e igualmente se ha registrado disposición de residuos sólidos a la intemperie, salitrización de los suelos por uso de insecticidas en actividades agrícolas, vertimiento de gases tóxicos de las actividades agroindustriales y disposición inadecuado de desmontes de construcción o de mina."

THE New Cornelia Copper Co. is mining and treating a 'monzonite " porphyry" copper deposit that is all hard rock. The oxidized surface shell, which constitutes the leachable part of the orebody, is measurably more resistent to crushing and comminution processes than is the underlying sulfide portion. The siliceous ribs running through the whole orebody are harder to crush than the main mass and there is no soft crumbly material to furnish the large volume of primary fines that features the crusher feeds of most other porphyry properties. "Introduction“CAN YQUR Company afford not to train?"" This question was asked by Jack Taylor in the Factory Management Magazine for June, 1950. Mr. Taylor went on to say, ""No, it can't; no Company can"". It's true that many training programmes have not done the job they were designed to do because of a number of factors such as parts of management resenting training, management failing to understand the abstract values of training, and management giving impossible assignments or picking the wrong trainers. However, Mr. Taylor summarizes his article by saying that a properly-designed and •conducted training programme brings a company or a corporation to the point where the question is: ""Can my Company afford not to train?""About two years ago, in July, 1952, Nevada Mines Division of the Kennecott Copper Corporation embarked on a training programme, the same type of programme that had been inaugurated earlier at the •Utah Copper Division at Bingham, Magna, and Garfield, Utah. President Charles Cox of Kennecott, in •a speech made •before the Utah Bankers Association in June of 1951, stated that, ""I think that our programme of employee training is one of the most important phases of our entire operation"". That statement might be said to be one of the guiding principles of training at Nevada Mines Division. Training is supported by top managements and down the line to Division managements. As the years go by, the Company expects to receive many benefits from training."

North America had an Important role in the early development of sampling theories. Unfortunately many progressive ideas were soon frozen into a series of guidelines based on the philosophy that "honest sampling only requires good judgment and practical experience". Such a philosophy appeared to be good enough In the early age of the mining Industry; however, it became quickly necessary to find new approaches. During the last thirty years, Pierre Gy's sampling theory provided tremendous breakthrough in the comprehension of this new science, nevertheless went unnoticed in North America. Sampling always generates complex problems and as the philosopher and mathematician Descartes suggested: "A complex problem can often be dissociated Into a series of several simpler problems, only then you try to solve those one by one". The only way to solve sampling problems is to consider each component of the overall sampling error: components of a continuous model such as long-range quality fluctuations, periodic quality fluctuations, weighting fluctuations; components of a discrete model such as materialization errors, delimitations errors, extraction errors, fundamental errors, grouping errors, and segregation errors. PAST AND CURRENT PRACTICES Many sampling methodologies have been developed, improved, and standardized during the first half of this century. Accordingly, sampling equipment has been proposed, selected, and used by standards committees. Today, there is a tremendous variety of sampling methodologies and corresponding tools offered to anyone with limited experience in sampling and it is very easy for a chemist, metallurgist, geologist or miner to spend considerable money in equipment transgressing the most basic rules of sampling correctness. Sampling stations that never worked properly in modern plants often cause engineers to abandon them and return to a primitive form of grab sampling.

"INTRODUCTIONHydrogen sulphide is probably the most toxic gas associated with crude oil. Hydrocarbon (petroleum) vapors themselves are harmful to the human system, but hydrogen sulphide, when present, is usually more important from the standpoint of health and safety. These conclusions were reached in an investigation of the toxic gases encountered in the transportation end refining of high-sulphur petroleum. The results of that investigation are presented in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 23l. although the writers of Bulletin 231 paid no direct attention to the production of oil in the field, they attributed to hydrogen sulphide reports of accidents caused by gas in the oil fields of Mexico.During the development of oil fields in Texas, a ""poison gas"" was encountered that constituted a decided health and safety hazard. The present report discusses an investigation of this gas made in July, 1926.The major portion of the investigation was conducted in the Panhandle field of Texas, but the study also includes the Big Lake and McCamey fields.Scope of WorkThe work undertaken in each field included:Examination of the gas-coming from representative wells at various locations in the field; also analyses of the gas-air mixtures to which the workmen were or might be exposed.Observation of symptoms of poisoning and severity of these symptoms."

Aços inoxidáveis são ligas Fe-C-Cr com elevada resistência à corrosão. Estes podem receber diferentes elementos de liga, que alteram suas microestruturas e propriedades de acordo com o interesse da aplicação. Os mais comuns são os austeníticos, ferríticos, martensíticos e duplex. Os aços inoxidáveis austeníticos possuem excelente resistência à corrosão, elevada ductilidade, boa soldabilidade, conformabilidade e tenacidade. Os aços inoxidáveis ferríticos possuem boa resistência à corrosão, são bons para estampagem e possuem maior dureza e soldabilidade em relação aos austeníticos. Os aços inoxidáveis duplex (AID) são aços com estrutura bifásica, formados pelas fases ferrita e austenita, em proporções de aproximadamente 50% de cada. Os AIDs apresentam associação de resistência mecânica com resistência à corrosão. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo realizar ensaios metalográficos e tração de um AID 399B, de um aço inoxidável ferrítico 441A e de um aço inoxidável austenítico 304N, para fins de comparação da microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas. Com os resultados conclui-se que o AID possui maior resistência à dureza na escala HRB, o aço austenítico possui maior capacidade de alongamento, devido sua estrutura CFC. Já o limite de resistência e de escoamento são maiores no aço AID devido a sua maior proporção da fase ferrita (52%).

A segment of high-pressure steel petroleum pipeline needed to be replaced on a hillside and beneath a waterway within an existing right-of-way containing multiple petroleum pipelines. The pipeline replacement required excavation of sedimentary rock to allow placement of the new pipe. As a result of an existing right-of-way limitation, steep slopes, and hard rock, blasting would be required as close as 7.8 meters (25 feet) from two operating pipelines. Existing pipeline company standards would have effectively precluded the construction of the replacement pipe by blasting rock. To facilitate the required construction and evaluate actual pipe stress during blasting to ensure pipeline integrity, a comprehensive evaluation methodology was developed by a team of pipeline, mechanical, geotechnical, instrumentation, and blasting engineers. A total of 60 strain gages were affixed to the steel pipe and seismographs were buried at the surface near the blasting area. Test blasting allowed pipe stresses with corresponding ground motion to be monitored. A conservative analysis approach evaluated individual peak strains and revealed that only small pipeline strains, and therefore stresses, were induced in the pipeline as a result of blasting. This evaluation allowed specific procedures to be developed to inform the blasting operation of maximum explosive loading and minimum charge distances. Additionally, this effort provided the pipeline operator with appropriate pipeline operating pressures during blasting activities to limit total stresses in the pipeline to be below allowable stresses imposed by code, regulators, and company operational limitations. Recommendations were developed to measure the blast generated ground vibrations with seismographs buried at the depth of the pipe, near the pipe, and limit the ground vibrations from blasting to 150 mm/s (6 in/s). If ground vibration intensities of 120 mm/s (4 in/s) or more were observed, additional engineering review is recommended. Finally, all blasting would be suspended and all activities reviewed at peak ground vibration intensities of 230 mm/s (9 in/s). The evaluation effort resulted in effective and efficient construction of the pipeline replacement and allowed the pipeline operator to better understand blasting induced stresses on their assets.

"Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited, Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada, has developed a metallurgical wastewater treatment system employing two-stage lime neutralization, sludge recirculation and conventional mechanical thickening.Laboratory investigations, initiated in 1970, led to the construction of a pilot-scale minewater treatment plant, at Schist Lake Mine, in early 1971. This plant, treating 600 cubic meters/day wastewater containing 30-60 mg/l zinc, demonstrated metal extraction efficiencies of 99% under normal operating conditions.On the basis of this pilot work, a second pilot-scale treatment system was established in 1975 at the Flin Flon metallurgical plant to treat zinc refinery process waste water. Through numerous improvements, including automatic control equipment, the system has evolved to a full-scale operation capable of treating 800 cubic meters/ day wastewater containing 4-11 gm/l zinc. Treated effluent contains 0.2-20 mgll zinc. Hydroxide sludge produced returns to the metallurgical process for recovery of metals while clarified effluent discharges to waste.With the system, Hudson Bay Mining has achieved its original goal: the reduction of environmental contamination, while realizing ii return from metal recovery."

The wedge shape theory of the rock fragmentation range in bench blasting is presented according to the dynamic characteristics of rock fragmentation by blasting in open pit under the condition of hole-by-hole initiation. The finite element software ABAQUS was used to analyse the rock fragmentation mechanism. The rock mass stress contours, crack propagation and damage evolution of different moments were obtained.
