Only a minimum amount of illumination is generally provided for many types of mobile surface mining equipment. This condition presents a hazard to operating personnel working on and around such equipment. To reduce this hazard MSHA has proposed safety regulations requiring minimum levels of illumination for hazardous zones on and in the immediate area surrounding surface mining equipment. This report describes a Bureau of Mines sponsored project demonstrating the feasibility and effectiveness of providing dragline illumination in compliance with the proposed MSHA regulations. A description of the computer aided design, on site installation and field evaluation of individual lighting systems for each of three different size draglines is presented

O tubo formador de espiras é uma guia que está localizada no Laying Head, especificado de acordo com a norma ASTM 335P22, e tem por função conformar o fio-máquina na forma de espiras sobre o transportador Stelmor. O Laying Head gira continuamente, durante a operação normal, sendo que a cada revolução do tubo, uma espira é produzida, cujo diâmetro é determinado pelo raio final do tubo e pela velocidade do Laying Head, em relação à velocidade do Laminador. Estes tubos, durante a laminação dos aços BEXX, sofrem um desgaste acentuado, que é provocado pela carepa formada durante a passagem do fio máquina pelas caixas d’água, durante o processo de resfriamento. Desta forma, torna-se necessário trocá-los a cada 200t laminadas do referido aço, com tempo estimado de 30 minutos de parada. Além disso, há um desgaste físico acentuado na atividade de troca dos tubos, que coloca em risco a segurança dos funcionários. Outro efeito indesejável relaciona-se com o risco de ocorrência de sucata de linha, provocada pelo rasgamento do tubo, quando são fornecidos tubos cuja composição química se apresenta no limite inferior de especificação. Há programa de laminação que exige até 6 trocas diárias de tubo. Com a proposta de se incrementar a tonelagem laminada por canal dos discos de laminação do Bloco No Twist, tornou-se necessário desenvolver um tubo com insertos de metal duro, com vistas a aumentar a vida útil dos mesmos, como também a produtividade do Laminador 2.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the potential of in situ leach mining a variety of Cu, Mn, and Au-Ag ores. Geologic characterization of ore samples from laboratory leaching experiments is conducted both prior to and after leaching to assess the effects of leaching on the chemistry, mineralogy, and texture of the rocks. The identification and chemical compositions of ore, gangue, and reaction products are determined by a combination of techniques such as reflected and transmitted light microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, electron microprobe analysis, and backscattered electron imaging with scanning electron microscopy. The distribution of the desired metal in various mineral phases can be illustrated using elemental X-ray maps. The potential of reactive gangue minerals to rob Cu from leach solutions is investigated with the aid of transmission electron microscopy. Porosity and permeability are measured to determine how effectively the host rock can transmit leach solution. Textural relationships between ore, gangue, secondary reaction products, and fluid channelways are determined by petrographic examination and are documented by optical photomicrographs and secondary electron imaging. Representative sample selection is described, and several epoxy impregnation and sample mounting techniques are discussed.

The countries of Asia and the Pacific have large resources of diverse minerals. Australia and China have extensive mineralization that are commercially being exploited. The major minerals in Australia with known reserves adequate for both domestic demand and export markets include bauxite, clays, copper, diamond, gold, iron ore, lead, manganese, mineral sands (titanium minerals), nickel, salt, silver, tin, uranium, and zinc. China is the world leader in proven reserves of antimony, barite, magnesite, molybdenum, rare earths, titanium (ilmenite), tungsten, and vanadium. It also has about 55 billion tons of iron ore, albeit with an average grade of only 30 % to 35 % elemental iron content. With the exception of chromium and copper, China has significant resources of a wide array of minerals and metals, based on its production and/or export capability for these commodities. Additionally, India has significant resources of bauxite and mineral sands; Indonesia, bauxite, copper, nickel, and tin; Malaysia, tin and associated titanium; Mongolia, copper, fluorspar, and lead-zinc; New Caledonia, nickel; New Zealand, gold and iron sand; North Korea, magnesite; Papua New Guinea, copper, gold and mineral sands; Philippines, copper, chromite, and gold; and Sri Lanka, gemstones. Moreover, there appears to be extensive mineralization III Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, but they have yet to be definitively delineated.

In 1954, Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited began the program of deepening the Falconbridge mine workings for 2,000 feet below the bottom, or 4025, level in order to provide twelve new levels for production. Involved in this program were a production-sized internal shaft, .crushing, pumping and hoisting installations, the integration of the new shaft operations with those of existing shafts, and considerations of ventilation requirements and ground support at depth. This paper describes the major items of equipment, and the depth development of No. 9 shaft as a whole, and also emphasize the planning phases of the program. The factors involved and reasons for the equipment and layouts chosen are given. Introduction and History THIS paper describes the planning and development of that portion of the Falconbridge mine between the 4025 and 6050 mining levels. This mine, the oldest of several being operated by Falcon-bridge Nickel Mines Limited in the Sudbury district, has been a continuous producer for over thirty years.

The Phoenix mine on the Mararoa Reef at Norseman, Western Australia, provides an outstanding: AUstralian instance of the recurrence of payable ore beneath the bottom of an abandoned mine, and an interesting and instructive example of the development ofideas with regard to ore recurrence in a particular district. The Mararoa Reef is the most productive of several hypothermal goldquartz vains in pre-Cambrian basic volc81olics which strike northsouth and dip on the average, 45 degrees east. The Phoenix minewas abandoned at 500 ft. vertical depth after producing 342,000 tons of 9.9 dwt. recovery grade (equivalent to nearly half of the total production of the Norseman field) from a 2,500 ft.. long, horizontally disposed oreshoot, which is reported to have had an ore outcrop only 30 ft. in length.Interest in the field was revived in 1933, and by 1941 new ore mined and developed on the Mararoa Reef by Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L. amounted to approximately 700,000 tons of 6.7 dwt. recovery grade. In the same period another oreshoot of similar size and grade was developed by Norseman Gold Mines N.L., south of the old Mararoa company's site. As shown by the plans, the ore occurs in discontinuous shoots. The intervening area of shear is poor in quartz as well as in gold. Geological work on behalf of Western Mining Corporation Ltd., and Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L. has been in progress in the mine and in the field more or less continuously from 1913 to 1941 and again since 1946. This paper describes the successive advances in the understanding of the exploratory problem up to late 1941, to which several investigators have contributed. It is published by permission of the Board of Directors of Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L., owners and operators of the Phoenix and other mines.Development of the Prospect.In 1933 Western Mining Corporation acquired an option over the Phoenix property and adjacent leases. H. E. McKinstryl visited the mine and recognised that the ore occurred primarily on the flatly dipping sections of the vein, as distinct from the steeply dippingsections, in a wide shear zone with reverse movement. Many of the flatly dipping fractures were seen to exhibit tension phenomena and to link one shear plane to the next below on the footwall side. Perlite is a generic term for naturally occurring siliceous rock. It is a form of natural volcanic glass the main constituent of which is amorphous silica (70-76%). Perlite, when heated rapidly to its softening temperature range, expands from four to twenty times its original volume, due to the presence of 2-6% ?combined? water, in a manner similar to popcorn as the H2O molecules vaporize and create countless tiny bubbles, which account for its exceptional physical properties: light weight (30-150 kg/m3), low thermal conductivity, cellular structure, in general. These properties make perlite adaptable for numerous end-uses, which can be distinguished into 2 categories: Expanded perlite applications in: a) Construction Materials market (e.g. Acoustical Tiles, light-weight insulating Mortars, self-levelling Concrete), b) Agriculture (e.g. Hydroponics), c) Food and Chemical industry (e.g. Filtration Media, Filler, etc.), d) Insulation and Heat resistance technology (e.g. Cryogenic vessels, Refractory Bricks, etc.). Unexpanded Graded perlite applications in: a) Phosphoric Fertilizers industry (additive in H3PO4 production), b) Foundry technology (slag-aid, insulating and heat resistance agent).

"The configuration of the metal delivery system used in twin-roll casting can play a significant role in determining both internal and surface quality of the strips produced by this process.In the present work, a mathematical model for coupled turbulent fluid flow, heat transfer and solidification was developed and used in the study of metal delivery systems for twin-roll casting of low-carbon steels. This study was applied to a pilot twin-roll caster being investigated in Canada, with a roll radius of 0.3 m, producing strips of thicknesses from 4 to 7 mm, at roll speeds ranging between 4 and 12 m/min. Various configurations of metal delivery systems were simulated and their effects on the advance of the interdendritic solidification front and levels of turbulence and temperature within the caster investigated. According to the predictions of the model, an extended nozzle with inlet flow towards the surface of the rolls seems to be the best alternative for feeding liquid steel into twin-roll casters.A full scale water model of a pilot twin-roll caster was also built and used to qualitatively validate the predictions of the mathematical model.Various techniques for fluid flowvisualization were applied. In general, the predictions of the mathematical model were in reasonable agreement with the experiments with the water model."

Dados los requisitos actuales de aumento en la productividad y seguridad en las operaciones mineras del país, la empresa Tumi Robotics inició un proyecto de investigación y desarrollo de un sensor móvil que permita visualizar, diagnosticar y digitalizar el interior de chimeneas verticales de ventilación para minería subterránea.

This paper discusses the utilization of chromium slag, which presently has no useful application in China, as a resource. The following research has been done in this paper: (1) After determining the composition and properties of chro- miumresiduewedecidedtotesttheideaofusingchromiumslagasacomponentin synthetic MgAl O spinel material. (2) Through experiments on sintering and 2 4 electric melting of refractory materials we determined the best conditions for a practical process. (3) We compared the performance of the refractory material obtained with traditional spinel refractory materials and confirmed the excellent performance ofoursystem. Coal fines of less than 0.5 mm particle size, discarded as too fine for gravity separation, were subjected to flotation tests at varying pH and temperatures using modified dosages of kerosene as oil phase and methylisobutylketone (MIBK) as frother. Optimal coal recovery of over 74% was obtained using 200 kg kerosene and 4 kg MIBK per ton of coal fines at a pH of 9.7 and an ambient temperature of 26° C. The coal concentrate obtained under these optimal recovery conditions assayed 9.10% ash, 0.35% sulfur and 0.011% phosphorus, representing reductions in the ash, sulfur and phosphorus contents of approximately 75%, 43% and 8.3%, respectively. Its gross calorific value was 32.9 MJ/kg, its percentage of volatile matter measured 30.6 and the fixed carbon content was 66.3% (d.a.f). Caking tests showed the optimal concentrate has a standard welling number of 1 and is a Gray-King coke type C. These results show that the optimal flotation product could be utilized for such industrial purposes as steam raising or for processing in gasworks, but it would be unsuitable for metallurgical coke production.

El presente trabajo describe el proceso del proyecto de exploración por cobre y molibdeno en el centro del Perú. Para la aplicación del proyecto se necesita conocer las características geográficas de la zona y así luego señalar la efectividad de los métodos a utilizar. La topografía de la zona comprende sedimentos del Cretásico inferior y medio formados por cuarzitas y calizas, los cuales han sido intruídos por granodioritas que ocupan la parte central e inferior del área. La alteración en la zona estudiada se presenta en forma de sericitación, cloritización, kaolinitización y una débil silicificación. En la intrusiva, de acuerdo al grado de intensidad, se diferenciaron hasta cuatro grados de alteración. La mineralización en las sedimentarias prosiguió al metamorfismo y está formada por tetraedrita, galena, esfalerita y pirita distribuída en una ganga cuarzosa reemplazando capas delgadas de corta corrida. En la intrusiva, la mineralización está formada por molibdenita asociada con pirita, sericita y trazas de chalcopirita presentándose en diseminaciones y en vetillas. De otro lado, el empleo de métodos prospectivos geoquímicos y geofísicos para detallar anomalías en las concentraciones de mineralización, no logró el efecto esperado. Por ello, se utilizaron los procesos geoquímicos seguidos por el cobre y molibdeno, donde no se encontró zona de enriquecimiento secundario para el cobre ni concentraciones importantes de molibdeno.

RECENTLY, a description of the wartime work in this laboratory on the U-Si phase diagram was published. This diagram was available earlier in the open literature; as were Zachariasen's crystal structure identifications for the compounds in the system. The uranium end of the phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1. The most recent work on this system has emphasized the peritectoid E phase, of particular interest for a number of reasons. The early work provided evidence of this phase's resistance to corrosion in water and of its slight ductility. Further information on these properties has been obtained here. Work elsewhere4 has provided evidence of stability under irradiation. This body-centered-tetragonal phase is relatively isotropic compared to the more usually applied a or ? uranium phases. Unlike the other compounds in this system, it contains no Si-Si covalent bonds.3 In addition, consideration on the basis of Pauling's concepts leads to the conclusion that in the E phase, uranium has a higher valence than in any of the other phases. Definition of the composition of the ? phase has been of prime concern in the study of this alloy. Evidence is presented below that its silicon content is slightly higher than that of stoichiometric U8Si, the composition frequently assigned this phase on the basis of Zachariasen's identification. This work on the composition required careful attention to the method of dissolving the alloy for analysis, since apparently low silicon contents could be found under certain conditions, see Appendix. Preparation: Melting, Casting, and Heat Treatment—Almost all the samples were from castings with a diameter of 13/4 or 2 in. and about 1 ft long, weighing 10 to 15 lb. The U-Si charge was melted by heating to about 1650°C in an induction heated vacuum furnace. Beryllia crucibles were used at first, but were replaced by zirconia-washed graphite as the technique of keeping the carbon content low enough (about 500 ppm) was mastered. The alloy was bottom-poured at about 1650°C into graphite molds. A few small buttons, weighing no more than 50 g, were prepared in a small arc melting unit.' Since cast material has a preponderance of uranium and U8Si2, heat treatment is necessary to ob-tain the ? phase by the solid-solid peritectoid reaetion. Once obtained, the ? phase is stable to room temperature, obviating the need for speeial attention to the method of cooling after epsilonization, see Fig. 1. It was found desirable to epsilonize at 800°C for a week. For some purposes, in which residual uranium and/or U8Si2 are tolerable, shorter periods may be adequate. The temperature of 800°C is not critical, since essentially the same results were obtained from 785° to 825°C. Further departure from this epsilonization range is inadvisable.

Depending on the copper content, the type of copper compounds and the characteristics of accompanying substances, the materials are treated by smelting in furnaces, operating under reducing or oxidizing conditions. HKs pyro- and hydrometallurgical processes, blast furnaces, converters anode furnaces, tin lead alloy plant and tankhouse will be outlined. The reusable products are categorized according to the origin of the materials and then presented in the form of quantity and quality balances. Processing methods, process able quantities and quality requirements of inputs are described. The utilization degree of the most important metals (copper, tin, lead and zinc) is described with graphics. Hydrostatic trunnion bearings were recently provided on large Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mills driven by wraparound motors assembled on the head to shell flanges. A conventional SAG mill would have a ring gear driven through one or two pinions. The effects of the magnetic air gap forces from this new SAG mill drive arrangement on the performance of the bearing are discussed. A step-by-step systematic analytical de-sign of the hydrostatic trunnion bearing is presented, followed by a discussion of grinding mill erection requirements to conform with the design. A brief comparison with other bearing types and their response to the effects of magnetic air gap forces are also presented.

No presente trabalho, poli (tereftalato de etileno) virgem (PETV) e pós-consumo (PETPC) foram aditivados com um oligômero multifuncional estirênico-acrílico-epóxi (Joncryl POLYAD PR 002) comercializado como extensor de cadeia para polímeros de condensação como o PET, visando avaliar o comportamento da massa molar destes polímeros durante o processamento. PETV e PETPC, com e sem a incorporação do aditivo, foram preparados em misturador interno Haake Rheomix, com rotores tipo roller, empregando diferentes níveis do extensor de cadeia. As massas molares foram estimadas a partir de medições de torque e temperatura. Os resultados mostram que as estimativas com base em medições de torque em tempo real foi um indicador rápido e preciso da eficácia da extensão da cadeia do PET. O aditivo extensor de cadeia compensou a perda de massa molar durante o processamento, o efeito foi afetado pelo nível de aditivo presente.
