The Coal Preparation Division of the Pittsburgh Mining Technology Center conducted an investigation to assess and compare the pyritic sulfur reduction potential of coal-pyrite flotation and high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS). Tests were run on three coals--an Upper Freeport bed coal, a Lower Kittanning bed coal, and a Pittsburgh bed coal--to establish grade- recovery relationships characteristic of both processes. Representative portions of each coal sample were crushed to two top sizes--nominal minus 35 mesh (0.5 mm) and nominal minus 100 mesh (0.149 mm)--and subjected to conventional froth flotation. The froth product was then beneficiated by coal-pyrite flotation or HCMS to provide a direct technical comparison of the two processes. At minus 35 mesh (0.5 mm), the size normally employed for coal flotation, both coal-pyrite flotation and HGMS effectively separated pyrite from coal, and the performance of the two processes was essentially the same. At a size of minus 100 mesh (0.149 mm) , however, the performance of HGMS exceeded that of coal- pyrite flotation. The separations effected by HGMS were more efficient at minus 100 mesh (0.149 mm) than at minus 35 mesh (0.5 mm). On the other hand, it was concluded that either the effectiveness of coal-pyrite flotation decreases with diminishing top size, or the process has not been optimized to treat material finer than 35 mesh (0.5 mm).

HISTORY shows that the nation which makes the most steel is the most likely to win wars. Today the course of war shows that the nations which get there first with the most steel of the right kind will be the ones to win. Not only the most steel, mind you, but the right kind. Adequate production, which was enough for victory before the days of totally mechanized warfare of 1943, must now be accompanied by still better quality as well as more effective distribution. Further, both production and distribution must be flexible enough to permit rapid shifts from one weapon to another for use in varying elements in varying geographical areas. Thus the problem of making enough steel of the right kind at the right time in the face of changing requirements dictated by experience has been and will remain highly complex. This does riot permit us to ease our restrictions on nonessential use. War is a complex business, like the job of making steel for war. Each time we solve one problem, another pops its head up. Yet we are making some progress.

The Magnetometsic Resistivity (MMR) method is based on the measurement of the low-level, low-frequency magnetic fields associated with non-inductive current flow in the earth. The traditional resistivity method maps the electrical properties of the earth by measuring the electric field caused by galvanic current flow between a pair of current electrodes. The MMR method differs from it in that the potential electrodes are replaced by a sensitive coil or magnetometer and a component of the magnetic field due to the current flow is recorded. The presence of an inhomogeneity redistributes the current flow which results in a perturbation of the electric field and, usually, of the magnetic field. The electric field immediately above a relatively conductive inhomogeneity must, by Ohm's Law, be smaller than that expected for a uniform earth. The current density in this region is also reduced but the current density within the inhomogeneity itself is enhanced so that the horizontal component of the magnetic field measured above the inhomogeneity is usually larger than that expected for a uniform earth. A method of interpretation using the magnetic anomaly was patented by Jakoskyl in 1933 but it met with little success at that time. Part of the problem was undoubtedly with the instrumentation, and only recently have robust instruments of sufficient sensitivity been developed2 and field data of good quality obtained. There are many common configurations of the potential and current electrodes in the resistivity method. Similarly, in the MMR method one or both current electrodes may be moved with the magnetometer, either horizontally or vertically ( in a bore-hole), or the current electrodes may be maintained in fixed positions and the magnetometer alone moved. This paper discusses the actual recovery and installation of a longwall in a bituminous coal mine in Western Pennsylvania. The coal bed mined is in the Lower Freeport seam which averages 42 inches (1.07m) in height locally. Drainage from the mine is approximately 3.5 million gallons of water per day (13.25 million liters per day). This water deteriorates the mines predominately fire clay bottom making it extremely difficult to move equipment. Support removal is accomplished by pulling the 6 ton (5443 kg) shields out under their own hydraulic power and transporting them by track over four miles (6437m) co the next longwall panel. This paper also discusses the changes that will be made to aid in the succeeding longwall recoveries and installations.

The Bureau of Mines has tested a low-thrust water-jet-assisted rotary drill. This work was performed to evaluate the performance of a water-jet-assisted drill operated at thrust levels typical of a handheld manual-thrust operation. Prior work by the Bureau had indicated that using water-jet assist with high-thrust drilling applications would increase drilling rate. Small-diameter holes were drilled in five different types of rock. Thrust and water pressure were varied as the drill rate was monitored. The test results indicate that drilling rates increase with increasing water pressure and thrust. The water jet has more effect on reducing the specific energy when drilling in the harder rocks than in softer rocks. Variation in drill rate for a given rock sample is attributable primarily to the material heterogeneity within the sample. One rock type (Greenwich sandstone) could not be drilled efficiently with the water-jet-assisted drill.

Los tipos, tamaños y número de trituradores empleados en un sistema completo de reducción varían con factores tales como: el volumen de mineral que debe ser procesado, tamaño de la mina, tamaño máximo del todo-uno, dureza del mineral y de su roca soporte y tamano requerido para el producto final. Básicamente, sólo existen tres tipos distintos de equipos de trituración para la etapa primaria. Estos son: machacadoras de mandíbulas, trituradores giratorios y molinos de impactos, y cada uno tiene unas características operativas propias. Las trituradoras de mandíbulas operan por aplastamiento de las rocas entre dos paredes, una fija y otra móvil, en una cavidad determinada. Han sido ensayadas variaciones en la caída y movimiento, pero la mayoría de las máquinas del tipo Blake tienen un ángulo de trituración de aproximadamente 27° entre las mandíbulas fijas y móviles. El principio de trabajo del triturador giratorio es muy simple. Si un cono es montado en un eje vertical y la parte superior del eje se sitúa estacionaria mientras que la parte inferior gira excéntricamente, el cono tendrá también un movimiento excéntrico. Si el cono se coloca en una carcasa conveniente se movers aproximándose y retrocediendo de las paredes que lo contienen a la vez que gira. Si el cono y las paredes de la carcasa son suficientemente robustas y pesadas, cualquier cosa apresada entre ellas será triturada. Al lado de los incrementos de la eficacia desarrollados por las continuas acciones de trituración y el curvado de las caras de trituración, los trituradores del tipo giratorio tienen las siguientes ventajas: 1. La gran abertura de alimentación disponibles en comparación con trituradores de otro tipo. 2. El alto rango de tamaños y capacidades, que se encuentran entre 600 y 6.000 toneladas por hora. 3. The innovative Soil-Cement Mixing Wall Technique, developed independently in Japan, consists of mixing in-place soils with cement grout using multi-axis augers and mixing paddles to construct overlapping soil-cement columns. The applications of overlapped soil-cement columns include cutoff walls for groundwater control and structural diaphragm walls for excavation support. The special features of this technique include water tightness, versatile strength design, and efficient installation in subsurface materials varying from clayey soils to cobbles or soft rocks. Through the introduction of two recent subway projects in Japan, this paper presents the design parameters, construction procedure, quality control and performance of soil-cement wall for excavation support and groundwater control.

Esse trabalho tem por objetivo, propor a utilização de um dispositivo, criado na UFPE, para estudar a fadiga funcional e mecânica num atuador de Ti-Ni com memória de forma. Inicialmente, fios de Ti-Ni com efeito memória de forma, com 0,89 mm de diâmetro, foram submetidos a um tratamento térmico de homogeneização por 24 horas a temperatura de 500ºC e têmpera em água a 25ºC. Posteriormente, os mesmos foram submetidas a calorimetria diferencial de varredura para obtenção das temperaturas de transformação. De posse desses dados, foram confeccionados atuadores com a forma de mola helicoidal. Utilizando o dispositivo proposto, esses atuadores foram submetidos às deformações cíclicas, com expansão total de 10mm, num banho térmico programável, a temperatura constante de 85ºC, na condição supereslástica, essa etapa é denominada neste trabalho de ciclo rápido. Com o objetivo de analisar o efeito dessas deformações cíclicas sobre as temperaturas de transformação e a capacidade de recuperação de forma dos atuadores foi realizada um segunda etapa, aqui denominada de ciclo lento. Nessa etapa, os atuadores foram solicitados à esforços de tração equivalentes a tensão de cisalhamento no fio de 70 MPa, dentro do intervalo de temperatura entre 15°C e 85°C, e tiveram o deslocamento e as temperaturas de transformação monitorados por um sensor LVDT e por um termopar respectivamente. Os ciclos rápidos e lentos são intercalados periodicamente. Dessa forma, observou-se a influência da ciclagem termomecânica na degradação do efeito de memória de forma.

D EC. 20-The spirit of Christmas and good will toward men has managed a few brief appearances on the front pages, welcome relief from man's usual ill-will toward man. A couple politicos did their best to brighten the scene by well-publicized romances. There was a general exodus to Florida to patch up nervous systems, and even the UNO quieted down as Mr. Vyshinsky departed for home via Eastern Germany. Before going he opened up a preliminary bombardment for the worldwide "communist peace offensive," and it is now the duty of the 600 million (according to the Cominform) ideological converts to press home the attack. In Washington, Mr. Lilienthal resigned as Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and demonstrated again the difficulty of government to retain the services of capable men. The President has yet to appoint another victim- possibly someone nicely noncontroversial and timid. So might the critics be appeased, but it would bode ill for the rapid exploitation of peaceful uses of atomic energy, the relaxation of excessive secrecy, wider sharing of developmental work with friendly nations and possible revision of the Acheson-Lilienthal proposals for inter- national control of the atomic bomb.

This paper reviews the role of oxygen potential and the advances that have been made in the application of tonnage oxygen in copper smelting. Brief reference is made to reaction kinetics before attention is turned to the thermodynamic considerations in copper melting to illustrate the importance of oxygen and. oxygen potential in the component parts of the overall smelting process. The chemical potential diagram for the Cu-Fe-S-O-Si02 system is used to elucidate the difference b etween the conventional matte smelting process and the modern continuous processes. A progressive oxidation scale' is constructed to show the common elements which exist, and the matte grades produced, during the smelting of concentrates to blister copper in commercially available copper smelting processes and those under development. The common route in producing blister copper from molten mattes, regardless of process, is illustrated on the Cu-Fe-S equilibrium phase diagram. The essential features of oxygen enrichment, in terms of its effect on combustion conditions (i.e. oxidation of fuel and sulphide minerals) and the heat balance are outlined. The benefits of oxygen enrichment are listed. The influence of tonnage oxygen and its effect on productivity, fuel savings, gas volume and strength in various copper melting processes are examined as a state-of-the-art review. Reference is made to the economics of tonnage oxygen utilization.

Mineral ownership determination is not always straight forward as in many cases the relevant details are not recorded on the latest Land Transfer title held in the local Land Registry Office. To determine mineral ownership can be difficult, time consuming and expensive especially in a confused sector. Non statute minerals can be owned by the Crown, Land Owner or other persons. Statute minerals (Gold, Silver, Petroleum, Uranium) are always owned by the Crown and thus present no problems. In simple terms the only accurate and reliable method of determining the mineral ownership under subject land is to historically search back to the first registration when the land and minerals were definitely intact. Then carefully ascertain from the evidence gathered along the way to the present day whether any legislation or private agreement altered or affected the status quo.

W. J. Parton—Those operators faced with the problem of treating fine coal whether in bituminous or anthracite will find this paper most timely. I would like to take this opportunity of discussing Mr. Schiffman's paper and at the same time express certain views relating to our Tamaqua plant. I would like to ask the author what type of impeller and diffuser is used in the Denver cells? Screen analysis of products from individual cells indicate that coarser material resists flotation and only floats after greater retention time in the last few cells. Also, the need for a scavenger screen to reclaim non-floated coal particles further stresses this point. I have always felt that more efficient means of cleaning coal between 10-mesh and 28-mesh existed than flotation. Reagent and power costs are high for the flotation process. When floating +28-mesh particles, cell capacity is lowered and some of the particles are lost with the refuse. The Tamaqua plant of the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co. floats —28-mesh coal and capacity of recoverable coal is 40 tph for 1800 cu ft of Denver cells; or 0.05 tons per cu ft of cell. At Kimberly 7.75 tph for 600 cu ft of cell gives 0.013 ton per cu ft of cell. At Bessie 14 tph for 800 cu ft of cell gives 0.017 tons per cu ft of cell. It would be appreciated if the author would comment on what he feels is the upper size limit of particle to attain most efficient utilization of the flotation process. The dewatering screw is a very interesting development since it offers a simple way to prepare coal sludge for more complete clewatering by drainage or mechanical dewatering on screen or filters. In other words it could be used to accomplish the same thing as a thickener tank. I would appreciate having the author's comment on how he thinks such a screw dewaterer would work on a froth.* The process as used in floating coal at the Bessie and Kimberly plants may be referred to as more of a bulk oil float in contrast to a froth flotation process. Experiments on increasing capacity of cells is most interesting since we are going through such an experi- mental period at the present time. Recently a double overflow was installed on our No. 30 Denver cells. So far results are not conclusive. In reviewing this paper the following comments are made pertaining to investigation of methods for increasing capacity: Supercharging: Supercharged air in matte flotation or for that matter the use of the normal amount of air drawn in by the impeller would in all probability cause such an aeration in the cell as to destroy the buoyant effect given to the coal particles by the excessive amount of kerosine used. In other words, air creates an agitation zone throughout the cell, creating a boiling and thereby giving a lower recovery in the cell. It would be interesting to know whether the 7 pct increase in recovery was with no air being admitted to the stand pipe. Changing Impeller Speed: The speed of a receded disc impeller for a No. 30 cell as recommended by the Denver Equipment Co. is, I believe, approximately 250 rpm. At this speed and using supercharged air in excess of 8-oz pressure, we have observed a boiling action in the cells. In our flotation we endeavor to obtain some degree of froth flotation using pine oil as a frother. The boiling action as caused by increasing the amount of air added to the cells is detrimental to recovery in froth flotation. It is our belief that to obtain increased recovery from a cell in froth flotation, additional air must be introduced but at the same time this air must be dispersed throughout the pulp in the form of small bubbles and this can only be done by increasing the speed of the impeller. Therefore, if Mr. Schiffman decreased the speed of the No. 30 impellers and at the same time continued to use supercharged air, the boiling action may have been increased because larger bubbles developed. The lower recovery as reported could be due to this factor. Decreasing the impeller speed will definitely decrease the power consumed but may have other disadvantages. First, we believe it will permit "sanding" in the cell and this in our opinion will increase the wear on the impeller and diffuser, especially so, if there is pyrite and/or sand present in the feed. "Sanding" in the cell when air is used, as in froth flotation, will effect the dispersion of this air and cause boiling.

It is not my intention today to make a series of predictions of things to come. Experience of the past few decades has shown that long-range predictions made be-fore engineering groups usually fall short of the mark; that is, the actual technical achievements in any period tend to surpass the boldest predictions that any responsible engineer would have made, say twenty years earlier.Instead, I will point out some recent accomplishments or refer to research that is in progress or now being planned in order to suggest important trends to be expected in the next few years. Based on this rapidly increasing tempo of achievements you can make your own extrapolations into the future."

Two alternative processes for the manufacturing of zircon products were investigated by the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa). These were the synthesis of doped-zircon pigments from plasma dissociated zircon, and an upgrading process to convert an inferior grade of zircon into a superior opacifier for ceramic applications. A solid-state reaction process was used to produce doped-zircon pigments. The influence on the colour intensity of the pigments on a ceramic tile were compared for milled and un-milled plasma dissociated zircon (PDZ) material, prior to calcination. Pr-yellow and V-blue zircon pigments produced from PDZ with different degrees of dissociation, were also evaluated. The second zircon beneficiation process entails the upgrading of an inferior grade of zircon to a superior opacifier for ceramic applications. A calcining process in the presence of mineralizers was used to produce the product in a conventional muffle furnace. A pre-milled inferior grade zircon concentrate, with a relatively high iron and alumina content generally not suitable for high quality ceramic applications, was used in this study. The influence of the upgrading process on the opacifying properties of the zircon material was compared to that of commercially available prime grade zircon opacifier products currently being produced in South Africa. The influence of a calcining step in the presence of mineralizers with regard to the milling characteristics of the treated zircon material was also evaluated.

In the latest AASHTO design specifications, the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) method is prescribed for the design of retaining walls. However, inconsistencies arise when LRFD is used for retaining wall design versus the traditional Allowable Stress Design (ASD). Required toe embedment and wall loading demand vary greatly when the two design approaches are compared, all else being equal. This is due to application of linear load factors to properties that vary non-linearly in the design. These inherent inconsistencies are further intensified when introducing factors such as layered soil profiles, different wall types, groundwater elevation, and surcharge requirements. When applied correctly, these two design approaches, in theory, should lead the designer to the same result with little discrepancy, as they do with steel structure design. However, the use of the current AASHTO LRFD method for various geostructural retaining wall designs yields contradictory results that suggest existing retaining walls that have been successfully designed and constructed are unstable. Fundamentally, LRFD should be built on reliability-based calibrations; the successful past performance of existing retaining structures designed using ASD suggests that the LRFD approach requires considerable modification. The authors of this paper recommend that the current LRFD load factors be reviewed and revised based on more comprehensive wall performance data and wall type such that the difference between retaining structures designed using LRFD and those designed using ASD is eliminated.

En ese sentido, los estudios geoquímicos y geológicos a través de la magnetometría y polarización inducida señalan una mayor visión del yacimiento para la búsqueda de nuevos recursos que permitan un enfoque de minería con mayores volúmenes de producción a menores costos y valores de mineral por tonelada. Así también, se ha logrado encontrar un nuevo halo de skarn mineralizado llamado “Franja Hada– Farallón” y una nueva estructura tipo mantiforme llamada “Manto Nadine”, las cuales posibilitan diseñar métodos de explotación masivos tipo taladros largos y pensar en piques de extracción en Raura.

INTRODUCTION The Magma mine, located at Superior, AZ, some 100 km (60 miles) east of Phoenix, was discovered in 1875, and was originally mined for silver. The property was acquired by W. B. Thompson who formed the Magma Copper Co. in 1910. Prior to 1965, square-set mining and cut-and-fill methods were used to mine steeply dipping veins at Magma. Ore was moved to the chute by gravity in the square-set stopes and by slusher in the cut-and-fill stopes. The stopes were gobbed with waste from the surface and development headings in the mine. The original square-set method of mining was modi¬fied in order to extract replacement ore bodies in limestones that dipped at 0.52 rad (30°) and varied in thick¬ness from 4.6 to 38 m (15 to 125 ft). Mining of these ore bodies was done by starting at the upper lateral ex¬tremities and retreating to the access openings. The timber square sets and cribbing were used as temporary support, the ground being allowed to cave as the mining retreated. It was found, however, that mining in such a manner was very inefficient; safety hazards increased be¬cause of the blocky and fractured characteristics of the ore and the weakness of the hanging wall. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The undercut-and-fill method of mining is now the primary stoping method used at Magma, and no pillars are left for later extraction. Four ore bodies are pres¬ently being mined. These ore bodies (see Fig. 1) dip conformably at 0.52 rad (30°) to the east with the host limestone and shale sediments, their average strike length is about 122 m (400 ft), and their thickness varies from 9 to 38 m (30 to 125 ft). The ore bodies are separated by varying thicknesses of barren rock. Three of them come together at various elevations primarily in the area of the main feeder fault, but there is an apparent horizontal displacement of about 23 m (75 ft) on the main feeder fault which complicates stope layout. The method as originally applied has been modified in order to mine more efficiently ore bodies that are 9 m (30 ft) or more in thickness. The modification was made to mine all the ore at a given elevation before dropping down for the cut below. The advantage of this is that mining is done on a horizontal plane and there¬fore muck removal can be mechanized. Also multiple faces are made available, thereby improving overall min¬ing efficiency. Another major change made was to carry a 6.7-m (22-ft) face when mining the top sill and a 6.4-m (21-ft) face when mining under fill rather than the former standard 3.35-m (11-ft) high face. This change lengthens the mining cycle and cuts mat prepa¬ration costs in half. Stopes are laid out (see Fig. 2) so that maximum mining panels are available and yet one stope crew will not tie up too much of the ore reserve. One stope might consist of as many as 20 panels, and these panels are divided evenly on opposite sides of the extraction cross¬cut. The stope layout is planned so that the maximum tramming distance to the orepass will not exceed 30.5 m (100 ft) on the crosscut and 38 m (125 ft) in the panel. In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the nine separate parcels that comprise the 4,330-acre South Warner Contiguous Wilderness Study Area in order to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The nine parcels are along the east side of the South Warner Wilderness. They are, from north to south, the Granger, Milk, Cottonwood, Owl, Hornback, Eagle, Emerson, Barber, and Van Riper parcels. The Wilderness Study Area is underlain by basaltic, andesitic, and rhyolitic volcanic rocks and by sand and gravel deposits. Low-grade metamorphism is widespread in the volcanic rocks, with quartz, zeolites, datolite, chlorite, and calcite locally abundant in veins and amygdules. The rocks have been displaced by the mountain-front Surprise Valley fault and by crosscutting high-angle faults.
