A recent report evaluating silica exposure levels in the metal/nonmetal mining industry noted that bag packaging and loading are some of the occupations at the greatest risk. In addition to dust problems, the bag-stacking process is labor intensive, making lost-time injuries common due to back fatigue and strains. During the bag-stacking process, a significant amount of dust can be generated, mainly from product on the outside of the bags and from dust escaping the bag valve upon impact of the bag on the pallet. In an effort to address dust-exposure and back-fatigue issues, Malvern Minerals Co., Hot Springs, Ark., made two major improvements to its ground silica stacking facility. First, the company purchased a semi-automated bag palletizing system (Figure 1). With this system, the bag stacker does not lift the bags, but slides them across a metal table. Small jets of air exit through perforations in the table top (similar to an air hockey game), allowing workers to more easily slide each bag into the proper position. After each layer of bags is completed, the table slides open, and the entire layer of bags is loaded onto an underlying pallet. The table then closes, readying it for another layer of bags. After the entire pallet is loaded, the unit delivers the pallet to a shrink wrap and forklift pick-up area. In addition to this semi-automated palletizing unit, Malvern Minerals purchased an Overhead Air Supply Island System (OASIS) to lower the bag stacker's dust exposure. The OASIS takes outside air, directs it through MEASURING RESPIRABLE DUST The bag stacker's respirable dust exposure was monitored using a RAM-1 instantaneous dust monitor to evaluate the impact of the various changes on the palletizing process and dust-control equipment. The bag stacker wore a vest that held the 10-mm Dorr-Oliver cyclone, which classifies the respirable portion of dust. Flexible tygon tubing was used to connect the cyclone to the RAM-1 dust unit, allowing the bag stacker to perform the palletizing process with minimal interference. The RAM-1 measures respirable dust concentrations by light scattering with a sensing chamber. This device closely simulates gravimetric measurements when calibrated for a specific dust. This instrument is ideal for comparative evaluations, as was the case in this study. Since the RAM-1 is not an MSHA-approved instru¬ment for dust compliance sampling, the dust concen¬trations listed in this article should be used as a com¬parative value of respirable dust concentration and not to determine actual dust concentrations from a com¬pliance standpoint.

Corrosion and product contamination have been difficult problems for extractive metallurgy industries in the U.S. because of the highly active chemicals used. During the past twelve years, other industries, particularly the chemical and paper segments, began to combat this problem with some degree of success using newer materials of construction, including reinforced plastics. These materials are made by combining a corrosion resistant thermosetting resin with a glass fiber reinforcing material and are used to con¬struct hoods, stacks, blowers, tanks, towers, pipe, and equipment of the most complex configurations. For service in contact with aggressive chemicals, the equipment is most often fabricated with the bisphenol-A fumarate polyester resins because of their resistance to corrosive attack. Data from both laboratory work and case histories of field applications are presented-for many common chemicals found in extractive processes. Information is also presented concerning design standards and recommended construction procedures

This article is a continuation of a series of publications by the authors on the international debate on resource nationalism, with specific reference to South Africa. Previous outcomes have shown that mine nationalization is not a solution for South Africa, and that maintaining stability of the current mineral and tax regimes is fundamental. It will not be wise to replace existing law and policy instruments until there is a better understanding of the distinction between fact and public perception about the impact of the current system. The new scheme of state custodianship linked to a mining royalty that effectively targets economic rents provides for effective resource use. The methodology in this article is to consider how South Africa's mineral tax regime can be tweaked to achieve optimal management and benefit from mineral extraction and associated rents by avoiding changes feared by investors. The major finding is that the current suite of instruments can be considered a suitable platform for optimal management of resource rents. However, it will be necessary to first investigate ways of improving the mineral beneficiation intent of the royalty structure, and secondly investigate whether the mineral rent portion of the royalty formula can be ring-fenced for the purpose of establishing a sovereign wealth fund.

It will also point out, how sustainable value creation can be measured on business model level.

This paper analyses the impact of the uncertainty associated with the input parameters in a mine planning optimization model. A real example was considered to aid in the building of a mathematical model that represents the coal production process with reference to the mining, processing, and marketing of coal. This model was optimized using the linear programming concept whereby the best solution was perturbed by the stochastic behaviuor of one of the main parameters involved in the production process. The analysis of the results obtained permitted an evaluation of the risk associated with the best solution due to the uncertainty in the input parameters.

Due to the high energy consumption of milling, it is desirable to improve the efficiency of this process. One alternative to reduce energy and material consumption while optimising production yield in mill operation is through balanced design and selection of liners. Over-design of liners leads to increased life but at a cost to grinding performance, a relationship which to date has not been studied closely. This paper provides a description of this process of liner life cycle optimization and presents initial results from the first of two life cycles being studied for a 32 foot (ft) SAG mill. The use of commercially proven high resolution laser scanning based liner shape information provided by the MillMapper® software correlated with well controlled site surveys at various points in the liner life was used as the basis for comparison. The survey data was modelled in JKSimMet to provide direct comparisons of mill performance. This potentially provides a methodology for the design of liners that maintain a favourable shape for the majority of liner life, yielding desirable production parameters such as lower specific energy consumption and higher throughput, while at the same time maintaining practical liner life cycles.

Porgera mine is 95 per cent owned by Barrick Gold Corporation. It is located at an altitude of 2200–2700 m above sea level in the Enga province of Papua New Guinea and produces approximately 460 000 oz per annum with a proven and probable reserve of 6.2 Moz. The refractory ore is ground in a conventional semi-autogenous grinding and ball mill circuit. After the gravity gold is recovered, the slurry is floated, oxidised in the autoclaves and then leached. This paper will focus on the flotation circuit and the recent upgrade of the control system. The five interdependent flotation circuits were challenging for operations to control as they dealt with variable grade, throughput and circulating loads, as well as the physical limitations of the equipment. With the installation of 18 Portage Froth Characterization® (PFC) cameras, the plant’s operation has been converted from a level-control based strategy that was focused on individual cells to one that targets grade and recovery control across the entire circuit. Variability in feed and the corresponding launder issues were addressed with a unique site initiative of deflector plates to indicate filling level. Non-linear closed loop control was implemented directly in the DeltaV Distributed Control System (DCS) using Portage Advantage Regulatory Control (PARC) algorithms and optimised with AwaRE advanced controllers. The most noticeable benefits achieved with the upgrade include improved flotation gold recovery, consistent flotation sulfur grade and autoclave performance. The U.S. economy was considerably stronger in 1976 than in 1974 or 1975. Real gross national product (GNP) rose sharply in the first quarter of 1976 and then increased at a more moderate rate for the remainder of the year. The unemployment rate fell until June and then increased for moat of the remainder of the year, finishing at the same rate as it had started the year. The inflation rate continued to decline in 1976. Reasons for the relatively low rate (compared with those of 1974 and 1975) included small increases in food prices and only moderate increases in energy prices. Total U.S. output measured in terms of GNP increased 11.6% in 1976. Real GNP in 1972 constant dollars rose 6.2%. Inflation as measured by the implicit price deflator increased 5.1%. In real terms, gross private domestic investment for residential structures rose 22.7% in 1976 after declining 14.7%a in 1975; State and local Government expenditures increased 1.4% in 1976; and personal consumption expenditures for services rose 4.5%. The Federal Reserve Board (FRB) index of industrial production increased 10.2%.

"The White Mountain sediment-hosted gold deposit is located in north-eastern China. Mineralisation is associated with silica–hematite–altered polymict breccias that occur within dolomite at or near the contact with overlying sandstone. Economic gold grades are controlled by the distribution of the polymict breccias and can transition rapidly to low or zero grade over short distances. This results in sharp and highly irregular ore contacts on whose accuracy proper stope design and ore control is reliant at this blasthole underground mine.Short-term planning and ore control utilise a grade control model created from infill drilling and grade control sampling (ie face and wall sampling). Typically, the grade control model was maintained by time-consuming manual editing of earlier made contacts to incorporate any new data. This approach also was quite error-prone due to: the complexity of the breccia and ore grade contacts irregularly oriented and/or insufficiently dense drill holes inconsistent incorporation of grade control sampling. These errors resulted in unplanned dilution and ore loss due to inaccurate interpretation of the ore contacts.The primary advantage to implicit geological models over conventional, manually-built wireframe models is that they can be updated very quickly and frequently. In a mine setting, the power and efficiency of using an implicit model is greatest where the use of manual inputs or editing can be minimised. Recently a workflow was set-up for the mine geology team to create an implicitly-modelled ore shape for short-term planning needs by using all data, especially all grade control samples. The resultant 3D shapes provided metre-scale accuracy and consistently reconciled complex ore geometries much faster and to a higher degree of quality relative to the wireframe model. "A single unit gas fired power station was being built on the edge of the Gulf of Thailand in 2001. The soil conditions consisted of very soft to soft Holocene Marine Clay, and the site was part of a coast line which had been subsiding below high water mark for some time. In order to provide access around the power station a road system in a figure-of-eight formation was required, and this also needed to be above the design flood level, allowing for future settlement. A ground improvement scheme was proposed and constructed, which consisted of two spacings of prefabricated vertical drains (PVD) over two depth ranges, vacuum consolidation and pre-loading, and rigid inclusions.During the construction phase, the vacuum consolidation was applied for 202 to 221 days in different zones, and monitoring allowed a prediction that the future settlement, including secondary consolidation over a period of 25 years, would be within the range of 175 to 355 mm, which met the contract requirement of less than 400 mm.The power plant was completed and became operational in 2003. Monitoring of the road levels continued, as did the settlement, and in early 2010 the total settlement since the end of vacuum consolidation had reached about 800 mm. The monitoring data both during the ground treatment and for the following 7 years is presented and analysed. This is supported by numerical analysis using 3D finite element methods which shows good agreement with the measured data, and allows a preliminary explanation as to why the predictions were so far out.BACKGROUNDAfter a period of bidding and negotiation, the Eastern Power and Electric Co Ltd (EPEC), an Independent Power Producer, entered into an agreement with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) in November 1997 to sell them power. In 1999 an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract and an Operation and Maintenance contract were signed with a supplier to provide a gas-fired (with oil as a back-up fuel) 350 MW combined cycle power plant in Bang Bo, Samut Prakarn Province, east of Bangkok. The site of the plant at Bang Bo is located immediately to the east of the Samut Prakarn Wastewater Treatment Plant, adjacent to the Gulf of Thailand (see Figure 1) in an area of very soft to soft marine clay (Bangkok clay) having low shear strength and potential for excessive settlement. The site layout comprises the main Power Plant components of generating block, cooling towers, fuel unloading area and storage tanks, switchyard and administration block, separated by access roads."

INTRODUCTION A number of tunnels supported and permanently lined by steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) have been built in North America in the 1980s. The material is more economical than, and technically equal or superior to, conventional shotcrete using wire mesh. The design and construction of SFRS-lined tunnels is straightforward, and only a few new design principles, laboratory tests or construction equipment modifications appear necessary in order to use this material. Modern tunnel Contractors may use cyclic drill-and-blast methods on some tunnels, with intermittent shotcreting as part of an orderly cycle. The Dry Mix method is most suitable for cyclic, intermittent, relatively small-scale shotcreting. However, modern Contractors excavating tunnels continuously using large long Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) or Roadheaders may prefer Wet Mix shotcreting on a mass production basis. In either case, the use of steel-fiber-rein¬forced shotcrete (SFRS) promotes the rapid and economical excavation of tunnels. The addition of microsilica will improve SFRS properties and reduce rebound, and is expected to become standard practice with SFRS in North America, as it now is in Scandinavia. HISTORICAL REVIEW Steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) at the present time (1985) is essentially conventional shotcrete with straight or deformed steel fibers added, and in general SFRS for tunnel linings encounters the same problems that conventional shotcrete does. Herbert Stream, a tributary of the Waimangaroa River on the Stockton Plateau, has elevated metal concentrations and low pH characteristic of acid mine drainage (AMD). Dissolved aluminium concentrations average 8.3 ppm, iron 1.4 ppm, manganese 0.69 ppm, and zinc 0.12 ppm and pH ranges from 2.8 to 3.2. Flow rates range from 2.3 to 26.6 L/s with an average of 5.3 L/s. To determine the effectiveness of different treatment strategies, a small amount of the AMD was diverted through three small-scale passive AMD remediation systems over an eight month period. These included a reducing and alkalinity producing system (RAPS), a limestone leaching bed (LLB), and an open limestone channel (OLC). Both the RAPS and the LLB performed well, effectively removing metals and restoring pH. The RAPS lowered aluminium concentrations by up to 99%, iron 97%, manganese 95%, and zinc 80% and the LLB lowered aluminium concentrations by up to 99%, iron 99%, manganese 92%, and zinc 91%. The pH was restored to between 6.4 and 7.4 by the RAPS and to between 7.3 and 7.9 by the LLB. The OLC performed well as long as the residence time was similar to that of the other treatment systems. OLC removal rates for aluminium was up to 99%, iron 94%, and manganese 21%, and the pH was restored up to 5.6. Due to its simplicity and effectiveness, it is proposed the LLB be constructed to fullscale size to treat the entire Herbert Stream.

The performance of the U.S. economy in 1977 was similar to that in 1976 which, in turn, had been a considerable improvement over 1974-75. In 1977 real gross national product (GNP) showed a similar, but some-what slower, growth pattern compared with 1976. Real GNP increased sharply in the first quarter of the year followed by smaller increases for the remaining three quarters. With only two exceptions, the monthly unemployment rate declined or remained steady throughout 1977, falling to a low for the year in December. The inflation rate in 1977 was slightly higher than in 1976, but the rate still remained far below that of 1974-75. Total U.S. output as measured by GNP in current dollars rose 10.8% in 1977. Real GNP in constant 1972 dollars increased 4.9%, and inflation, as measured by the implicit price deflator, rose 5.6%. In real terms, gross private domestic investment for residential structures increased 19.3% in 1977, only slightly below the 22.9% rise in 1976; State and local government expenditures increased 1.1 % in 1977; and personal consumption expenditures for services rose 4.5%.

Este trabalho teve como finalidade aumentar o índice de rendimento metálico no processo de laminação à quente de aços longos no Laminador Demag, visando reduzir as perdas metálicas com maiores impactos no processo, com foco nas barras laminadas por barras perdidas. Mediante ao cenário atual da economia brasileira, o índice do rendimento metálico no processo de laminação representa um dos maiores impacto no custo de transformação do produto acabado. Para isso dividiu se o trabalho em duas fases, com aplicação da metodologia Seis Sigmas, que consiste em atuar nos problemas de forma ordenada, através da matriz de esforço x impacto. Seis sigmas é um mecanismo utilizado em melhorias de processos em geral, como forte característica identifica os parâmetros mais relevantes e influentes na geração de perdas metálicas no processo de laminação, no qual nos norteou a elaborar um plano de ação de forma sólida, ou seja, ações com menor esforço e maior impacto com foco nas causas fundamentais. Com a implementação do plano de ação, houve um aumento de 0,72% no índice do rendimento metálico para uma produção 178kt no ano 2015, com crescente melhora na performance das barras laminadas dos produtos do laminador Demag.

THE PRESIDENT (DR. C. B. KINGSTON, member C.l.M.M.) expressed regret that neither of the authors of the paper was able to be present to submit the paper in person. In their absence, it would be introduced formally from the Chair. It was a clear, straightforward account of a fine piece of shaft sinking, cleverly conceived and boldly executed. He referred briefly to the distribution and nature of the Dome ore-bodies and stated that, for both the miner and the metallurgist, the mine had provided a wide range of problems of unusual interest. Discussion on the paper was then invited. MR. THOMAS PRYOR said the paper was most opportune, because the subject of internal shafts did not appear to be fully treated in current mining literature. Many members were not familiar with Canadian gold deposits and it would be of interest if the authors could give a brief description of the location of the ere deposits of the Dome mine. This information would doubtless explain why a new internal shaft was needed in a position which required such an exceptionally long cross-cut to connect it to the main hoisting shaft to surface. It would also add to the value of the paper if the authors would give some idea of the duty expected of the new shaft in terms of tons of rock hoisted and of trips engaged in the transport of men and materials, and it would be helpful if figures could be given of the total capital cost of the hoists and subsidiary excavations at the shaft top, and of the cost per foot for sinking and lining the shaft below the collar. Turning to details of the paper, one was favourably impressed by the care given to the provision of a good travelling way for men in the main cross-cut, as shown in Figure 1. It was by no means always that one could walk in comfort and safety in a working where there was a 20-in. ventilating pipe in the roof.

In the Pilbara region of Western Australia, an iron ore mine is undertaking a high wall cut-back to improve stability and allow access to deeper ore deposits. Several sections of the wall have been classified low factor-of-safety due to unstable localised geology, and therefore an engineered approach to vibration critical blasting was required. The use of electronic detonators allowed multiple signature (seed) holes to be incorporated into a production blast adjacent to the low factor-of-safety area, therefore providing baseline vibration data to be used for future modelling with the added advantage of eliminating unnecessary pit closure downtime typically associated with a signature hole program. All subsequent blast patterns also incorporated multiple signature holes to provide additional data and allow continual updating – and therefore improved accuracy - of the blast prediction model. Electronic detonators and blast initiation systems were combined with advanced blast vibration modelling software to produce optimal timing sequences with predictable vibration outcomes. Although minimising vibration was the primary focus, blasting induced frequency was also a concern for the project team and therefore initiation sequencing was optimised to also avoid undesirable frequencies. Minor variations in ground factors (vibration transmission and attenuation) were noted, and therefore justified the inclusion of regular signature holes which allowed continual vibration model updates. Blasting results produced vibration and frequency measurements within allowable limits and closely resembled the predictive model. These positive results were achievable through the combination of electronic detonators, advanced modelling software and good onsite practices by engineering and on-bench teams alike. This project will remain ongoing as the pit progresses to deeper benches, and therefore the same methodology will be applied; quality and continual data collection, the use of electronic detonators, and optimisation via advanced vibration and frequency modelling software. By adding the solid oxalate acid powder into the solution of nickel chloride or its ammonia coordinated solution, the uniform compound particles were prepared and the precipitated particles were transferred to the mono-dispersed NiO particles by calcination. In this study, the various experimental conditions were investigated, the characteristics of the corresponding obtained particles were analyzed, and the formation mechanism of the particles was elucidated. It was found that the solid oxalate acid provided the solid-solution interface for the precipitation and induced the nucleation and growth of the product particles.

"AT ANY TIME, it is a pleasure to me to be invited to address The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy because it represents an industry and men with whom I have been happily, if peripherally, associated continuously for forty years. This year, it is a particular pleasure because I believe that an important subject has arisen which I propose to discuss.This is a major discovery in the earth sciences, first fully revealed this winter, but already widely accepted. The basis of this revolution, for it is no less, is that measurements of three different features of the earth all change in exactly the same ratios. These ratios are the same in all parts of the world. The results from one set are thus being used to make precise numerical predictions about all the sets in all parts of the world. No such accurate correlations and predictions have ever been found before in geology or areal geophysics. The whole subject of earth science has thereby been radically altered.The first of these measurements is that of the direction of magnetic polarity in lava flows. When piles of young lavas are examined with the aid of a pocket compass, it is noted that some flows are magnetized in the direction of the earth's field and some in the reverse direction (Figure 1). By accurately dating enough flows, a time scale of the dates of reversals has been established. During the past four million years, nine reversals have occurred synchronously all over the world (Cox, Darymple and Doell, 1967, McDougall and Chamalaun, 1966) (Figure 2). It appears that the scale can be extended back to Precambrian times (McMahon and Strangway, 1967). This time scale is the first of the 'three identical ratios."

Sphalerite in the ores is multi-banded. Based on color and textures, bands in samples separated by a few kilometers may be correlated. Darkness of color is directly related to iron content. Isotopic and fluid inclusion data indicate that temperatures of ore deposition were 225°C-50°C. The agreement between these two sets of data suggests that chemical and isotopic equilibrium were established. The salt content and hydrogen and oxygen isotopic compositions are similar to present-day values of oil field brines suggesting a similar mode of origin. Ore transport and deposition are not adequately explained by either chloride or bisulfide complexing. Necessarily, other mechanisms were involved.
