This paper will describe the copper concentrate slurry pipeline and pumping system between the concentrator and the port at Bougainville Copper Ltd. The operations of Bougainville Copper Ltd. are located on the island of Bougainville in the South Pacific. Geographically, it is the northernmost island of the Solomon Group but, politically, it is part of Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea is a United Nations Trust territory administered by Australia, having recently been given self-government, with independence scheduled for December 1974. (Fig. 1). The island is approximately 130 miles long by 30 miles wide, with the Crown Prince mountain range forming a spine along its length. The mountains in place are over 8,000 feet high with the mine located on the western flank at an elevation of 2,200 feet. Exploration on Bougainville for copper by Conzinc Riotinto of Australia (CRA) began in 1963 and by 1968, through geophysical, geochemical and diamond drilling methods, an orebody containing nearly one billion tons of ore grading approximately 0.48% Cu. and sane gold had been outlined. Bougainville Copper Ltd., the company operating the mine, is 53.6% wined by CRA, 20% mined by the government of Papua New Guinea with the public Folding the remainder of the shares. Nickel laterite pressure acid leach plants and reduction roast plants have had a checkered history in their engineering, construction, startup and operational reliability. Many potential projects have been the subject of detailed studies over the last thirty to forty years but relatively few have advanced to commercial production. Four reduction roast plants are currently operating, an additional one was partially constructed but never completed, and another was started up in 1974 and shut down after 12 years operation. Three acid leach plants have been built and commissioned in the last five years, trying to follow the example of the Moa Nickel plant in Cuba. An additional acid leach plant project is currently on hold, following limited construction work, its future subject to review by the owner because of potential cost over-runs. This paper attempts to discuss difficulties that may be encountered as a project is developed and will address factors which may affect production ramp-up schedule, long term production performance and overall production success. Comparisons are made with ramp-up performance at other large metallurgical plants that employ some comparable unit operations. "The distinction between data suitable for process control and data subject to aliasing only becomes quantifiable with the availability of rapid real-time measurements. Expecting the dynamics of flotation to vary for different ore types, process flows and equipment types; a study was conducted to compare the dynamics of different flotation processes. The results shed light on the critical sampling intervals required for process control which in turn allows process stabilization and optimization. The technology used for the in-line measurements is based on diffuse reflective spectroscopy and has been introduced into the mineral processing industry over the past ten years. It has been widely implemented in the sulphide flotation industry in South Africa for the real-time measurement of grade.BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE A study was conducted by Du Plessis and Keet (2010) to quantify the minimum sample frequency required for grade and/or impurity control. The study was based on chromite data collected at 15 second intervals from the concentrate line of a flash float cell in the Platinum industry. The data captured the natural process variation of the entrained chromite through water recovery due to changes in feed parameters and flotation performance. It was found that the minimum rate of sampling required from the studied flash float concentrate was 2 minutes. This sampling interval time accounted for 90% of the variance in the process data. It was further found that a sampling interval time of longer than 4 minutes produced data with no significant correlation to reality. The dynamics of the flotation process has been misjudged in the past but can be quantified with the availability of real-time grade measurement based on diffuse reflective spectroscopy. The objective of the study was to compare the dynamics of different sulphide flotation processes through the comparison of maximum sampling interval times required to combat aliasing. All data were collected from single stream analyzers that are currently installed at mineral concentrators. The technology used is based on diffuse reflective spectroscopy."

In 1987 and 1988, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral resource investigation of the 31,400-acre Muddy Creek Wilderness Study Area (UT-060-007). The investigation was requested by the Bureau of Land Management and authorized by the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 (Public Law 94-579). The study area is located in Emery County, Utah, about 50 air-miles southwest of Green River, Utah. The wilderness study area is in the San Rafael Swell region of the Colorado Plateau Physiographic Province. Rocks in the area consist of gently dipping sedimentary strata of Permian, Triassic, and Jurassic age.

With construction of the first phase of the Automated People Mover (APM) Tunnels nearing completion, this paper will address how knowledge from recent Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) tunnel construction at the airport was used to refine the methodology for the next phase of tunnels currently in design. The benefits include an enhanced understanding of the ground conditions; allowing optimization of excavation sequences and support requirements; a more effective instrumentation and monitoring program; and improved construction details and related contract provisions.

"El objetivo del siguiente texto es describir las características geológicas de los niveles 80, 120 y 155 de la Mina Sucuitambo, situada en la provincia de Caylloma, departamento de Arequipa. La medición de los dos primeros nivels se realizó con referencia al último nivel 155 del trabajo. Posteriormente se hace una descripción de las distintas vetas con sus posibilidades de laboreo en los distintos niveles, especialmente en el nivel 155. Las nueve vetas a considerar son la del Carmen, Nueva Corona, Corona, Potosí, San Fidel, Potosí Ramal, San Pedro, San Mateo y San José, respectivamente. Finalmente para la geología de los niveles en mención se ha empleado cinta métrica y brújula, basándose en los planos geológicos revisados en el año 1954, de los niveles 80 y 120. El suscrito completó el mapeo de dichos niveles en las labores trabajadas hasta junio de 1956, y ha hecho el reconocimientogeológico de todo el nivel 155. Así también se ha confeccionado tres planos geológicos correspondientes a los tres niveles, además de las tres secciones estructurales."

The removal of phosphorus is essential 1n order to increase the recycling of steelmaking slags for their manganese, iron and lime contents. This study aims at establishing the phosphorus mineralogy and its distribution in steelmaking slags, the effect of slow cooling, and the methods of phosphorus removal. A series of steelmaking slag samples was prepared at different cooling rates, and the mineralogy, chemistry and grain size of the samples were investigated with SEM/EDS and x-ray diffraction. The test results using high gradient magnetic separation are discussed.

To extract uranium from low-grade, calcrete-hosted uranium (CHU) ore is challenging owing to the presence of carbonate and swelling clay gangue minerals that require an alkaline lixiviant to be used. Western Australia possesses ~75 000 U3O8 t in CHU resources. Improvements to alkaline leach extraction practices would improve the economic potential of these deposits.A column leach study of CHU ore was run for 105 days using an alkaline carbonate-bicarbonate lixiviant. The uranium content of the liquor plateaued after 75 days at ~275 mg U/L; the calculated maximum solution capacity was 800 mg U/L. Spiked peaks and troughs were seen in the data set beyond the 60th day, where concentrations ranged from 220 - 290 mg U/L, indicating possible cyclic uptake and loss of uranium from the solution.Pristine and leached ore samples were geochemically analysed and mineralogically characterised at high resolution using a field emission gun-electron probe micro-analyser (FEG-EPMA). Results showed that leached ore samples from the top of the column contained less carnotite than pristine ore. In contrast, leached ore samples from the column base contained regions with more carnotite than pristine ore, indicating precipitation. Three carnotite grain micro-structures were identified in the leached ore; fan-spherulite, granular and core-shell cubes, with evidence for multiple growth phases.Evidence of carnotite precipitation was seen at the edge of and in pore spaces within montmorillonite and dolomite grains. The point of zero charge of both minerals is lower than the pH of the lixiviant (pH 10.8), thus the mineral surfaces are negatively charged and would not attract UO2(CO3)34- ions out of solution. Similarly, the decrease in the uranium content of the lixiviant is not attributed to super-saturation, as this was unlikely to have been achieved. "Pyrometallurgical furnaces are tapped through tap-holes that are opened with drills and oxygen lances. The lance is often used on its own or as the last step of opening the tap-hole. Interaction of oxygen with molten material inside the tap-hole can occur, and is a phenomenon that is not well understood. As part of a study that focuses on the effect of lancing on flow inside and around the furnace tap-hole, a cold-model validation was done. The validation study focuses on validating the MULTIPHASEINTERFOAM multiphase flow solver in OpenFOAM® for the problem involved. The sensitivity of the model to different materials properties (viscosity and density in particular) is presented with both cold models and the results from flow simulations in OpenFOAM®. IntroductionMany pyrometallurgical operations are carried out in furnaces where molten material accumulates continuously. Once enough material has accumulated and is ready to be removed from the furnace, material is tapped through one or more tap-holes in the furnace. Tap-holes differ significantly in both geometry and materials of construction, depending on the process involved – examples of different types of tap-hole configurations can be found in, for example, Nelson and Hundermark (2014). Tapholes all share one common feature: they are high, wear areas of the furnace. Molten material at high temperature flows through these areas, after which the tap-hole is sealed, usually using tap-hole clay. The purpose of the tap-hole clay is to harden inside the tap-hole and seal it until the next tap.Once ready to tap, a pneumatic drill and/or oxygen lance is used to open the tap-hole. The extent of lancing a furnace tap-hole depends strongly on the type of furnace. In, for example, many blast furnace operations lancing is limited as much as possible, and done only if drilling was not effective. In other operations, such as on small-scale pilot furnaces with short tap-holes, only lancing is used to open the tap-hole."

"About 100 Hectares of land reclamation over the very soft to soft marine clay at Uran Creek in Maharashtra is planned. The depth of marine clay varies from 10m to 24m as observed from the geotechnical investigation. The marine clay was treated with Pre-fabricated Vertical Drains (PVD’s) installed from the elevation of +5.5mCD (chart Datum) and preload/placement of surcharge. A Settlement of soft soil mud under the reclamation was monitored using magnetic extensometer (M) and ground settlement maker (S2). These instruments are installed after constructing working platform at around +5.5m CD. Based on the field instrumentation data, the consolidation parameters were adjusted to match the theoretical and actual settlement plot. The author called this approach as “Back analysis method”. The objective of this paper is to present a case study of instrumented preloading treatment for a thick marine clay deposit. The degree of consolidation in clay strata was determined from magnetic extensometer and ground settlement marker data. Authors also determined degree of consolidation as Asaoka method, Hyperbolic method and Back analysis method and compared the results.INTRODUCTIONExpansion of Container terminal with port buildings, rail container depot, roads and utility buildings at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) is planned over a reclaimed land of 100 hectares. Uran creek predominately consists of the estuarine deposit of very soft to soft marine clay. They are characterized by low shear strength, very low bearing capacity and exhibit large settlement when subjected to loading. The additional load causes the significant magnitude of consolidation settlement over a considerable period of time. Thus for development projects on top of soft soil, the postconstruction settlement would be of primary concern.To accelerate the consolidation pre-fabricated vertical drains (PVD) were used. Pre-loading procedure was adopted to minimize the post construction total and differential settlements. PVD’s were installed at 1.0m and 1.2m c/c triangular pattern. Locally available borrow material is used as a reclamation material. The reclamation material has been placed over the existing sea bed level by land based method/end tipping method and created the working platform. The level of working platform is decided based on the tide data and it has been selected such that work should be affected during highest high water level. The PVD has been installed from the working platform and subsequently all the field instruments have been installed from the same level. Five different types of field instruments are installed to monitor ground improvement works."

The precipitation of Al2Cu particles in a 319 T7 aluminum alloy has been modeled. A theoretical approach enables the concomitant computation of nucleation, growth and coarsening, based on an implicit scheme using the finite differences. The equation of continuity is discretized in time and space in order to obtain a matricial form. The inversion of a tridiagonal matrix allows us to determine the evolution of the size distribution of Al2Cu particles at t + dt. The fluxes of solute in-between the boundaries, as well as the ones at the boundaries, are computed in order to respect the conservation of the mass of the system. The main results of the model are compared to TEM measurements. Simulations provide quantitative features on the impact of the cooling rate on the size distribution of Al2Cu particles in good agreement with the TEM measurements. This metallurgical model is integrated into FEA software in order to perform mechanical computations. This kind of multiscale approach allows new perspectives to be investigated in the process of designing cylinder heads. It enables a more precise prediction of the microstructure, its evolution as a function of continuous cooling rates and its impact on the integrity of the structure.

This report contains a description of the contract activities performed by ENSCO, Inc. under contract H0292025. The purpose of this project was to prove the feasibility of detecting hazards in a coal seam using a synthetic pulse radar. This work was conducted in three phases. The first was an analysis of the types of errors which might cause problems. The second was to build a breadboard radar and the third phase was to conduct a field test with the system. The work from each phase is discussed and the results of the field tests are presented. These results show propagation of the radar signal through 200 feet of coal along with reflections from 50 feet away. The final section contains recommendations for future development.

Cromanite?is a new high-strength austenitic stainless steel developed by Columbus Stainless. It contains approximately 19 percent chromium, 10 per cent manganese and 0,5 per cent nitrogen. Cromanite can be welded successfully, but due to the high nitrogen content of the base metal, certain precautions have to be taken to ensure sound welds with the desired combination of properties. Although no matching filler metals are currently available, Cromanite can be welded using a range of commercially available stainless steel welding consumables. Welds produced using E309L, E307, E307Si and E312 filler wires are resistant to hot cracking and the formation of nitrogen-induced porosity, but the hardness, strength, ductility and toughness of the welds are generally inferior to those of the base metal. In applications where full use is made of Cromanite?s high strength, welds with matching strength levels would be required. In wear applications, where Cromanite is used primarily for its work-hardening properties and corrosion resistance, lower strength welds would probably be acceptable. Welds produced using E307 filler metal demonstrate the best combination of properties for use in wear applications. The welds display high rates of work-hardening that would result in increases in hardness and strength when subjected to abrasive or high impact environments.

This study aims to recover europium, yttrium metals, some valuable salts or oxides from the white powder (apatite) coating the inner surface of spent florescent lamps (SFLs). Pressure leaching using sulphuric/nitric acid successfully dissolved the metals of interest. Europium or yttrium metals were obtained by hydrogen reduction of their oxides. Addition of potassium thiocyanate converted the dissolved sulphates to thiocyanates. Selective separation of Eu and Y was then carried out by solvent extraction from the thiocyanate solution. The used solvent was trimethyl-benzylammonium chloride. N-trihutylphosphate in 1 M nitric acid was used to strip the metal loaded in the organic phase. Results showed that the quality of the cleaned glass tubes of the SFL met the standard requirement for the lamp manufacture. The white powder (WP) is composed of calcium sulphate 35.2%, phosphate 61.5% and oxides of europium and yttrium 1.65%wt. respectively. Autoclave digestion of the WP for 4 h at 120°C and 500 kPa in sulphuric acid/nitric acid mixture dissolved 96.4% of yttrium and 92.8% of europium. The conversion rate of sulphate to thiocyanate was favoured at low temperature. Stripping of Eu and Y from the loaded organic phase behaved in an opposite way. A metal separation factor of 9.4 was obtained. ate recovered europium and yttrium salts were selectively separated using ethyl alcohol or dilute nitric acid. Yttrium was very soluble while europium was not. Europium and yttrium metals were obtained by hydrogen gas reduction at 850°C and 1575°C respectively.

Oklahoma City is undergoing a replacement program for an existing 66in (1.675m) water pipeline that conveys raw water from Atoka Reservoir to the City. This pipeline currently crosses the Canadian River on elevated piers and is subject to flood hazards. To replace the existing pipeline and mitigate flood damage concerns, two parallel microtunnels will be constructed below the river channel. Access is from construction shafts located near the midpoint of the tunnels; opposing drives are launched from each shaft. This geometry dictated shafts of significant depth – exceeding 120 ft. (37m). To accommodate the casing pipe segments and microtunneling machines, a minimum shaft diameter of approximately 34 ft. (10.4m) was required. Due to the difficult geologic setting, a reinforced secant pile compression ring is specified by contract in the top 70 ft. (21.3m) of these construction shafts to provide a very low permeability support system.

"Among the first published papers from Prof. Torstein Utigard was work on imaging the aluminum electrolysis process and in-situ measurements of aluminum in cryolite melts. He and Prof. Jim Toguri used an x-ray radiographic technique to measure interfacial tension of aluminum drops. Publications using this equipment for aluminum electrolysis spanned from 1985 to 2006. As well, other methods were used to better understand electrolysis in molten salts, including hot-stage microscopy, direct observations from above the bath and water modeling techniques. For chloride systems (for magnesium and lithium), it is possible to see side-on the electrolysis using a quartz cell. In honour of Prof. Utigard’s contribution to this field, this paper presents a summary of work on visualization of molten salt electrolysis, including work done at the authors’ labs and others around the world. The paper will summarize key findings and their possible impact on molten salt electrolysis."

The flow characteristics and uniform elongation of alpha-beta titanium alloys in the solution-treated condition were shown to be markedly affected by the solution temperature. Two classes of alpha-beta alloys were distinguished, based on the effect of solution temperature on the uniform elongation. Martensitic alpha-beta alloys, which are relatively weakly beta-stabilized, showed decreasing values of uniform elongation as the solution temperature was initially increased. However, after solution-treatment at still higher temperatures in the alpha-beta field, the uniform elongation of these alloys was again high, and often attained its maximum value. Nonmartensitic alpha-beta alloys, which are more heavily beta-stabilized, showed a continuous decrease of uniform elongation with increasing solution temperature. The behavior was rationalized in terms of the alpha-beta ratio and the alloy content of the beta existing at the solution temperature. The data indicate that in commercial practice close temperature control may be required to get maximum uniform elongotion, and hence, maximum potential formability, in solution-treated sheet. Bend-test data also were obtained for the solution-treated conditions. A MOST important objective of current titanium research is the development of age-hardenable alloys with superior formability in the solution -treated condition. Alpha-beta titanium alloys have been shown to be amenable to high-strength aging treatments after solution-treatment in the alpha-beta field.' However, heat-treatment data on the properties of solution-treated sheet, such as uniform elongation, minimum bend radius, and flow properties, which have a bearing on the potential formability, have not been widely available. This paper presents only the most significant results of a research program conducted at Battelle for the Air Force in an effort to develop sheet alloys that can be formed readily as solution-treated and subsequently aged to very high strengths. Data for 10 compositions representative of the more than 25 alloys studied in this program are presented. A primary objective of the paper is to demonstrate the pronounced dependence of the flow characteristics and uniform elongation on solution-treatment temperature. This effect is believed to be vitally important in the commercial heat-treatment of age-hardenable titanium sheet alloys. Experimental Procedures Melting and Fabrication—The nominal and actual compositions, beta transi temperatures, and rolling temperatures of 10 of the 30 alloys studied are presented in Table I. Stock :€or two of the alloys, E (Ti- 8Mn) and J (Ti-6A1-4V) was obtained from commercial heats. The remaining heats, except D and I, were double melted as 10-lb heats in a consumable-electrode furnace. Melting stock was 120 Brine11 hardness sponge. The oxygen and hydrogen analyses spotted throughout the heats indicate the range of interstitial levels resulting from the melting practice used. Heats D and I were melted as 20-lb ingots with the same grade of sponge. These ingots were cut in half and one portion used in the present evaluation. The ingots, which were about 4 in. diam and 4 in. in height, were upset forged and drawn at 1750°F to sheet bar 5/8 in. thick by 2 1/2 in. wide in such a manner that the top of the ingot corresponded to the top of the sheet bar. Slabs of the sheet bar, 5 1/2 in. in length were scalped to 1/2 in. thickness and rolled at the temperatures indicated in Table I to approximately 0.055 in. sheet. Elongation during rolling took place at 90" to the original forged length. The fabrication procedure used is described in some detail since the experimental heats showed considerable directionality in mechanical properties. The rolling procedures for the commercial heats were unknown, but were such as to produce essentially isotropic properties. All heats, as rolled, showed microstructures typical of alpha-beta alloys worked in the alpha-beta field; that is, the structures consisted of equiaxed alpha particles in a beta matrix. Heat Treatment— The effects of solution and aging heat-treatments on the properties of the alloys were evaluated uSing longitudinal and transverse tensile and bend coupons sheared from the sheet. Two or three solution-treated conditions were evaluated for each alloy. In addition, the alloys were also tested after annealing at 1200°F for 4 hr and furnace cooling. Experience has shown that, since the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, over-compaction of spoil during the reclamation process has severely limited tree growth on reclaimed land. Researchers at the University of Kentucky have conducted a ten-year investigation at a surface mine in eastern Kentucky that monitored the changes in selected spoil physical characteristics for various reclamation and compaction alleviation methods. More specifically, research plots were developed for reforestation that employed three different levels of compaction and two different methods of ripping for overly compacted spoil. Each year measurements were made in the field of dry bulk density, using a nuclear density gage, and maximum penetration depth, using a recording cone penetrometer. In addition to good correlation between tree growth and selected spoil characteristics, the data demonstrated a gradual convergence of the measured spoil characteristic data over the study period.

This paper describes the back analysis of the Pavoncelli tunnel, an hydraulic tunnel which was excavated between 1904 and 1915 in South of Italy and experienced severe damages during the 1980 Irpino-Lucano earthquake. A numerical simulation which is intended to study the behaviour of the tunnel during this seismic event is presented, also accounting for the swelling phenomenon that took place during and after construction.

Equilibrium phase diagram studies of zirconium- rare earth metal alloys by the Bureau of Mines at its Albany Metallurgy Research Center prompted the development of a rapid gravimetric method for determining rare earths in zirconium in which the rare earths are absorbed from sulfuric acid solution of the alloy on a cation exchange resin . The sample in 10 percent H2SO4 is introduced into the column , the zirconium is eluted with 10 percent H2SO4 , and the rare earths are eluted with (NH4 )2SO4 solution and precipitated with NH4OH . A tracer technique was employed to determine the efficiency of the procedure . Y203 and europium 154 - 152 (Oak Ridge ) were added to 10 g of zirconium and taken through the entire procedure . Recovery averaged 97.6 percent on 0.002 μg europium in the rare earth fraction . Rare earths were determined in the range 0.10 to 90 percent .
