The Bureau of Mines investigated coal storage silos to determine how gassy coal must be for methane accumulations in a silo to become hazardous and where such accumulations are likely to occur. Methane concentrations were measured in the open space above the stored coal pile, in the pile, and in the reclaiming area. No methane layering was found in closed-top silos. Reclaiming areas were as gassy as the top part of the silos. Coal samples were collected from the conveyors entering the silos in order to assess the gassiness of the coal. No simple correlation was found between the gassiness of the coal stored and the measured methane concentrations. However, at mines where the average 24-hour gas emission from the conveyor belt samples was 14 ft3/ton or more, fans or open tops were used. It appears that a large fraction of the methane released during storage remains in the void space between the coal particles.

Smelting or converting of sulphide concentrates and mattes in a batch operation presents a challenge when directing the off- gas to a conventional acid plant. The Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (a division of the Vedanta Group of companies) Chanderia Lead Zinc smelter was presented with such a challenge that was met with the adoption of the Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System. The Ausmelt top submerged lance technology used at Hindustan Zinc generates a furnace gas stream that containsbetween 0.1 vol% and 12 vol% SO2 during the three stages of batch smelting. Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing Technology captures the SO2 to ensure that treated flue gas exits the facility at a concentration below 100 ppmv SO2 and it releases SO2 in a controlled fashion, to more closely match the needs of the existing acid plant. The application of a regenerable scrubbing system to capture SO2 from a batch-operated furnace and convert it to acid in a conventional acid plant was a first of its kind in the world. This paper provides an update on the design and operation of the Hindustan Zinc SO2 recovery system and suggests two improvements to the basic flow sheet that optimize the cost of SO2 scrubbing further.

Critical to understanding and controlling phase mixing and separation in metallurgical processes, is the development of reliable experimental techniques to measure interfacial properties of melt systems. A series of experiments has been carried out to determine the effect of oxygen potential on the surface tension of liquid copper. Using an electromagnetic levitation method, a surface tension-oxygen chemical potential adsorption isotherm was produced for the Cu-O system at T 1400 K. The surface tension results show good agreement with the literature values e.g. within 3 per cent for pure copper. The Belton `ideal' adsorption isotherm was applied, and the following equation derived to best fit the experimental data ? =1251-77.5 1n41+ (2.79x105 . pO1/2)](mN.m Using this equation, the surface tension of copper was calculated/predicted as a function of oxygen potential at 1400 K, and showed excellent agreement with the experimental values. This confirmed that the adsorption behaviour of oxygen in liquid copper is ideal. The saturation coverage of oxygen on the surface of liquid copper was determined to be T0 = 6.65 µmoles.m,-2 corresponding to an area per adsorbed oxygen atom of ao ? 25 Å2. These values agree well with those cited in the literature, and our experimental data cover a very wide range of oxygen potential (10-5 to 10-17 atm). The Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 legislated maximum dust levels for the working place. As the law was implemented, extensive efforts were undertaken to provide the technology necessary to control dust generation. One approach to dust control was the use of high expansion foam in place of the usual water sprays on coal cutting equipment. At the time of the act, high expansion foam had already seen considerable testing for the suppression of dust in underground coal mines. Work by MSA, several coal companies and the Bureau of Mines itself had provided data which showed foam to have some merit as a dust control mechanism. It suffered in a few areas, however, which limited its practical application. Its principal difficulty was persistence which hampered operations due to foam buildup, but problems were also encountered due to equipment size and form.

Under this program two tape recording and triggering systems were developed and delivered for use in the Bureau of Mines microseismic program. The systems are designed to improve the effectiveness of the Bureau owned Sangamo 3500 series and SABRE VI instrumentation tape recorders. The system is designed to capture random microseismic data, digitize and temporarily store these data, start the tape recorder; and then transfer the data to magnetic tape for permanent storage. The system is designed to pack data on tape such that the tape may be simply played back through galvo drivers onto an oscillograph such that a continuous series of analog records, with corresponding time of day information, are reproduced without excessive oscillograph paper waste or the need for the operator to search for valid events.

IN view of the increasing importance of sintering in the beneficiation of iron ores preparatory to their reduction in the blast furnace, the writer believes the time is opportune for an up-to-date, though brief, discussion of the general principles of sintering, as well as a discussion of some of the recent improvements and mechanical developments that have been achieved in this industry, its present trend and future possibilities. Sintering may be defined as the agglomeration of fine mineral particles into a porous mass by incipient fusion caused by heat produced by com-bustion within the mass itself. Its first successful application, in connec-tion with the treatment of lead sulphide ores, was known as blast roasting. In this process the lead ore was given a preliminary roasting in a reverber-atory furnace, then the incandescent mass was placed in a pot with a grate and an updraft was applied. It was soon discovered that much better results were obtained by cooling the ore, moistening it, and placing it upon an incandescent layer of fuel previously placed upon a grate, and then applying the updraft blast of air until the charge was converted into a more or less agglomerated mass. The fuel was sulphur and the process one of desulphurization, which was the principal result desired. The application of downdraft to blast roasting brought about tremen-dous results; the principal one of which was that an air blast of high pressure could be passed through a layer of ore deposited on a grate, or on a grate covered by a layer of coarse porous material, without disturbing the particles of which the layer is composed. The air current is compelled to filter through the pores of the charge, whereas if the same pressure applied to the top surface of the charge with downdraft were applied to the bottom of the charge with updraft, the charge would be completely blown off the grate. Another result of reversing the draft was that a flame could readily be applied to the top surface of the charge for ignit-ing purposes.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a miniature, portable two-level oxygen-deficiency alarm and produced three prototype models. Each operates from a 4.2-v dc power source, and the highest current drain of any model is 80 ma. An electrochemical cell, which produces an electrical output in proportion to the partial pressure of oxygen to which it is exposed, is used as an oxygen detector. The output of the cell is applied to an electronic circuit that detects two different levels of oxygen percentage below that of normal air, and produces distinct audible signals at these levels. The hazard alarm mode is activated when the oxygen percentage first drops below normal and produces a 500-cps "beep" tone with an intermittency of 1 cps. The danger mode produces a continuous 500-cps audible signal when the oxygen percentage drops still lower.

THE chief uses for copper are as a conductor of electricity and as the chief component in brasses and bronzes. For such uses, the copper must be of very high purity. H the impurities are zinc, iron, lead, arsenic, or antimony, they can be removed to a great extent by fire-refining. H, however, gold, silver, nickel, or cobalt are present, electrolytic refining is necessary. Electrolytic refining must be preceded by fire-refining and hence all impure copper must be fire-refined. The electrolytic refining of copper is most efficiently carried on when the impurities in the anodes are at a minimum. Some of the impurities tend to deposit with the copper at the cathode, while others remain in solution, decreasing the conductivity of the electrolyte and thus increasing the voltage necessary for refining. Since these dissolved impurities must be removed by continuous purifications, the amount of impurity in the anode copper should be reduced by furnace refining to some predetermined limit. Anode furnace operation aims to reduce these impurities to a minimum beyond which the cost of further furnace refining would exceed that of removing the remaining small amounts of impurities from the electrolyte. The anodes should have a fine-grain internal structure because any pieces of metal becoming detached from the anode during the electrolytic refining are inconvenient to remove from the cells and may cause short-circuits. Impurities tend to disrupt such a structure and thus form zones of weakness during corrosion. When the impurities are reduced to a satisfactory mini-mum, the anode, due to having a fine-grain structure, will corrode uniformly over the entire surface area exposed to the electrolyte. Oxides of the impurities may be volatile, in which case they pass off as flue gases, or they may form viscous slags having a lower specific gravity than molten copper, thus permitting their removal by skimming. Some impurities can be oxidized by introducing air into the bath. Due to the large solubility of oxygen in molten copper, oxygen is distributed uniformly throughout the bath and thus comes into intimate contact with all impurities. The oxides which are insoluble in molten. copper are removed either as flue gases or as slag.

Wet mining of auriferous gravels at L & MÆs Waikaka operation in Southland creates spoil dumps derived from stripping of a clay rich overburden, tailings from past dredging and the processing of auriferous sands and gravels. Over recent times, spoil dumps have slumped on six occasions, threatening the viability of the wet mining operation. Close examination of slump morphology, coupled with the sequence of material placement and rate of dumping suggested a mechanism associated with undrained failure of a 2 m layer of silt and sand tails forming the base of dumps.Commencing with some information on the geotechnical properties of source overburden, back analysis of failure morphology and sequence and development of undrained loading conditions from first principals, the most likely failure mechanism and factors controlling failure were defined. Based on analysis results, a scheme to stabilise the lowwall dumps was developed and implemented, augmented by continuous monitoring of pore pressures in the basal wet tails, and laboratory testing for confirmation of computed material properties.Lowwall spoil stability has improved since implementation involving changes to the method of spoil loading, and modification of wet tails composition to improve permeability and drainage of the basal wet tails under load. The method and approach to prediction and verification of failure mechanism provide a sound basis for continued mining of deeper auriferous gravels.

Enargite (Cu3AsS4) is a major complex copper mineral and often is a carrier of invisible gold particles. Pyrometallurgical treatment of enargite is challenging due to the arsenic release to the environment. Hydrometallurgical treatment, on the other hand, appears to be a promising alternative for enargite processing. In an atmospheric enargite leaching process both the copper and arsenic from the mineral can be leached into a sulphuric acid solution and the arsenic can be simultaneously precipitated as ferric arsenate. The unlocked gold in the residue then can be recovered in a subsequent cyanidation circuit. The downside of the atmospheric enargite leaching in sulphate solutions is the slow leaching kinetics. In this study the effective parameters of the atmospheric enargite leaching process in ferric chloride media were investigated. All the experiments were carried out at temperatures below 100 °C. The process parameters that were investigated in this study included ferric, chloride, sulphate and cuprous concentrations, temperature, mixing rate and leaching slurry pulp density. It was found that the copper recovery rate increases with the addition of cupric chloride and also with raising the temperature. The highest leaching kinetics and the highest overall copper recoveries were achieved when cupric was initially added to the leach solution and at 90 ºC.

INTRODUCTION The particular field of application of machines utilizing air currents as the primary separating medium is in the cleaning of the fine sizes of bituminous coal. Approximately 25,400,000 tons of bituminous coal were cleaned by air machines during 1965. They have not found any application for cleaning anthracite. Since the development and introduction of the first successful commercial pneumatic oscillating machine for cleaning bituminous coal in 19 16, by the Sutton, Steele and Steele Co, Dallas, Texas, and the American Coal Cleaning Corporation, formerly of Welch, W. Va., seven other successful pneumatic coal-cleaning machines have been developed and introduced to the American coal-mining industry: 1. Peale Davis: "Pneumo-Gravity" machine. 2. Arms "Concentrator," oscillating table. 3. Hey1 and Patterson oscillating table. 4. "Stump Air-Flow," pulsating air jig. 5. "Super Airflow," pulsating air jig. 6. Ridge air jig. 7. Phillip air jig. While not all coals can be beneficiated by air washing, the air washing of coals that are easy to clean can be readily proved advantageous. Of all the preparation methods, pneumatic cleaning is the most acceptable from the standpoint of delivered Btu cost. This is based on the premise that a percent of moisture is just as detrimental as a percent of ash. The principle of dry concentration has never been determined with scientific accuracy. To the present time the study has been more of an art than a science. It is possible to forecast the results of wet concentration from a study of the washability characteristics of the raw coal but only after applying rule-of-thumb methods of interpretation to the specific gravity and size distribution can it be ascertained that the raw coal is amenable to dry concentration. Air as a separating medium dates back to biblical times as exemplified in the winnowing of chaff from the grain. However, the same application of air to coal serves merely to blow the dust away and size the remaining particles. Pulsating air was the solution to the problem and largely eliminated the necessity for close screen sizing which was required on early separators. Because of the low density of air, a medium of sufficient density has to be built with the material itself. The 8 ft by 91/2 ft drive which joined No. 7 Shaft with Browne Shaft on the 1,480 ft level was extended from both ends and met at a point approximately 12,000 ft from No. 7 (2,000 ft from Browne).The surveying required for this 2 1/2 mile haulage drive called for greater accuracy than was obtainable from South Mine standard methods. Procedures and devices from published information were tried and modified as required to suit local conditions. Several new methods were applied and improved as the drive advanced. The control of angular, linear and level measurements was perhaps considerably in excess of the requirements, but this was offset by abnormally large discrepancies resulting from shaft plumbing. The accuracy of the final breakthrough, although not to the standard desired, was sufficient to complete the connection without inconvenience and added cost.INTRODUCTIONThe acquisition of the Browne Shaft leases in January 1962 presented the management of Broken Hill South Limited with the problem of transporting ore from these leases to its mill. It was eventually decided that diesel locomotivehaulage through a 2t mile drive on the 1,480 ft level between the two mines was the best solution. The drive was advanced from both ends after Browne Shaft was deepened by 80 ft to reach the 1,480 ft level horizon. Each end advancedabout 15 ft/day with the miners working three 7 hr shifts. Blasting was restricted to the end of the shift.The survey work involved five shaft plumbings and 78 theodolite stations in a traverse, underground and surface,of more than 5 miles. Because of the exceptional length of the drive, an unusually high degree of reliability was required.The aim was for a maximum error at breakthrough of 1 ft 1 in 30,000, and to secure this, precise methods of linear measurement were necessary. Shaft plumbing in particular posed special difficulties.

Hydraulic transport has been considered as one of the most economical methods in transferring granular materials over relatively long distances. In the natural world, it is used to transport basic material required for the support of life; in industry, it is a method widely adopted for handling materials. But the phenomena of hydraulic transport has not yet been thoroughly understood. As most of them are conditioned by a number of hydraulic and mechanical parameters, of which the basic relationships are not fully known, the traditional approach in relating these parameters to the energy requirement is purely empirical in nature. Empirical formulas, such as that proposed by Durand, (1) only give satisfactory results over a selected range of (particle size)/(pipe diameter) ratios and slurry concentration. When the case is more complicated or when new situations arise, the empirical formulas fail to give good predictory results. In fact, most of these formulas are based upon dimensional analysis, where the underlying physical interaction is not explicitly considered. Apart from the loosely related, non-dimensional groups incorporated in the formulas, there is practically no analytical means for modifying the formula so as to enable it to cope with more complex real physical situations. Although it seems quite remote that a complete rigorous solution to this highly complex problem could be generated in the near future, it is generally recognized (2, 3) that research in this area should be directed to more comprehensive studies of the obscure phenomena. The basis of this paper is a compilation of work in the design and construction of copper heap leach facilities, and interviews with various heap leach operations personnel in Chile and Peru. The purpose is not to highlight specific mines and their performance, but rather to discuss geotechnical/civil features of copper heap leach facilities that function well, as well as features that do not. During the 1990s several copper heap leach facilities were brought on-line in South America. Many of these facilities have now been operational for a number of years during which time the operators have been able to monitor the performance of their heaps. This paper serves as a compilation of operators? experiences, and provides a discussion of the lessons learnt over the past decade. Several key geotechnical issues are examined, focusing upon the integrity of the ore, drainage material and pipe network, along with the success of inter-lift liners. This conference provides a timely update of the original paper (Burkhalter et al, 2002).

The first catalogue of Geological Reports of the United States was prepared by Prof. 0. C. Marsh, and published in the American Journal of Science and Ark for 1567, vol. xliii, second series. Since then the list has more than doubled, and it was thought that the publication of a new catalogue, brought clown to date, would be useful to many of the members of the Institute of Mining Engineers. The compiler will be most thankful to have any omissions or inaccuracies in the list sent to him, to be published as a supplement in the next volume of the Transactions. Especially to have the correct title, number of pages, plates, and maps of any volume on the list to which an * is prefixed, as he has been unable to personally consult such works. A preliminary list was issued last February, which has been almost doubled by the kindness of many friends.
