RESEARCH in the steel industry, as in other lines of manufacturing, has for its principal purpose the increasing of profits. That is what manufacturing companies are for, and all departments of the organization must be so coordinated as to lead to profitable operation. To divide a payroll into productive and non-productive labor is misleading. Productive labor, in fact, is necessary labor, and non- productive labor is the labor we can get along without. One might as well say that the steering wheel is not a part of an automobile as to say that the directing minds of an industry are non-productive. Legitimate manufacturing profits in a steel company or any other company are the reward that the public pays for service rendered or risk taken. The desire for profits is the impelling motive that leads investors .to take risks and build up industries that give employment to others. Every department of a company, be it executive, manufacturing, financial, sales, or research, must contribute to the one end which brings success-profits.

Aur Resources is Canada's leading copper mining company with producing mines and development projects in North, Central, and South America. Copper production from Louvicourt Mine in Quebec, Quebrada Blanca, and Andacollo Mines in Chile had a record of 245 million pounds in 2001. Located 600 km North of Montreal, Louvicourt Mine is a joint venture between Aur Resources (30%), Teck Cominco (45%), and Novicourt (45%). Aur Resources is the mine operator with 280 employees working to produce a copper and zinc concentrate. In operation since 1994, the mine has produced a total of 12,606,000 metric tonnes of ore grading 3.6 % Cu, 1.5 % Zn, 26gr./m.t Ag, 0.9gr.m.t Au. This highly mechanized mine reached full production in August 1995 at 4,000 tpd. From 1996 to 2001, the average mine production rate was more than 4,300 tpd. The Louvicourt Mine continued its record of solid performance in 2002 and is expected to continue to do so for the balance of its 2.5 years mine life.

The Kulumadau deposit represents an intermediate-sulfidation epithermal gold deposit (3.8 Mt at 2.3 g/t, Ag:Au = 1). Mineralisation is primarily confined to hydrothermal breccias within pre-existing fault zones, where it is disseminated throughout a hydrothermal matrix comprising chlorite-quartz-adularia-illite-I/S clays-calcite-pyrite. The host sequence represents numerous mid-Miocene pyroclastic flow eruptions within a tectonically active emergent shallow marine to subaerial depositional setting. Subsequent growth faulting was responsible for debris avalanches, which were subsequently cut by reverse faults. Faults were exploited by hydrothermal fluids, with the heightened porosity at the juncture between faults and debris material facilitating boiling of the ore constituents. Fluid inclusion studies suggest that fluid mixing between meteoric fluids and magmatic fluids, accompanied by boiling, were the primary mechanisms for gold deposition. The occurrence of anhydrite/gypsum as late-stage veins and their sulfur and oxygen isotopic values indicate post-mineralisation mixing of sea water with hydrothermal fluids.CITATION:Burkett, D, Graham, I, Spencer, L, Lennox, P, Cohen, D, Zwingmann, H, Lau, F, Kelly, B and Cendon, D, 2015. The Pt-based alloys have a high potential for replacing some Ni-based superalloys (NBSAs) used in the highest temperature and most aggressive environments, and vanadium would be a beneficial alloying element. Six alloys of average compositions Pt-26.6Al-9.1V, Pt-23.1Al-17.8V, Pt-9.6Al-21.1V, Pt-17.4Al-6.4V, Pt-22.3Al-7.9V, and Pt-6.0Al-10.1V (all in at.%) were manufactured by arc-melting and examined in the as-cast condition using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Five samples were heat treated at 1 000°C for 1 500 hours and water quenched, then examined. The phases were identified using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and the identities were confirmed by XRD. In most of the samples, the phases existing in the as-cast condition were different from those at 1 000°C after ~1500 hours heat treatment. A solidification projection, an isothermal section and a liquidus surface projection were determined for the Pt-rich corner.

This paper describes a method for the determination of the settlement of an individual H-bearing pile, based on the results of CPT-tests. As implied by the nature of the problem, no analysis performed on one pile can be regarded as generally valid for a whole piling foundation project because, even on one site, the pile behaviour varies from one pile to another. Consequently, no precise mathematical analysis has been established; the proposed procedure represents a simple model for the determination of the probable settlement behaviour of an H-pile under a compressive load. Prior to the settlement computations, the rupture load and the resistance distribution along the pile have to be determined. Since the method for the determination of the H-pile bearing capacity from the results of CPT tests has been described elsewhere (de Beer, 1971, 72; de Beer et al., 1982; Arbed, 1985), no details will be given in this paper. The proposed method is valid for both uniform and non-uniform H-piles. The computed results have been satisfactorely compared to the static loading tests performed on different types of piles in clayey and sandy soils during an ECSC research program on H-bearing piles (1983-1987).

The Coronation Hill gold-platinum-palladium prospect is located in the valley of the South Alligator River (latitude 13'35'S, longitude 132'36'E), about 80 kilometres east of Pine Creek in the Northern Territory. Coronation Hill was one of thirteen sites in the South Alligator Valley at which uranium was mined between 1955 and 1964 after initial discovery by the Bureau of Mineral Resources in 1953. Most of the mines were operated by United Uranium No Liability. The Sleisbeck mine 25 kilometres south of Coronation Hill was operated by North Australian Uranium Corporation and the group of mines at Rockhole about 20 kilometres to the north-west of Coronation Hill was operated by South Alligator Uranium No Liability. The uranium mine at Coronation Hill produced about 26000 tonnes of ore averaging 2.6 kg/t U308 with an estimated average gold grade of 10.4 g/ gold. Gold was commonly associated with the uranium mineralisation and was recovered at the gravity treatment plant at El Sherana. Gold was also recovered in 1986 by Pacific Gold Mines Limited by treating the tailings from the Moline and Rockhole uranium leach plants at a CIP plant at Moline. With the completion of uranium contracts in 1964 mining in the South Alligator Valley ceased. Exploration for uranium continued in the area during the 1960s and 1970s with no success. The Coronation Hill Joint Venture (BHP Gold Mines Limited 45 per cent, Pioneer Minerals (Gold) Pry Ltd 45 per cent, Notgold Limited 10 per cent)carried out the first exploration specifically targetted at gold in 1984 with the drilling of five vertical drill holes which indicated high potential for a substantial gold resource at Coronation Hill with no associated uranium. The Joint Venture has sub- sequently drilled about 25000 metres of diamond drill holes at Coronation Hill alone. Analytical results from 1985 drilling established that platinum and palladium were associated with gold. An indicated resource of 3.49Mt at 5.12g/t Au, 0.21g/t Pt and 0.56g/t Pd has been calculated using a lg/t Au cut off.

The Cawse nickel-cobalt operation is situated 50 km NW of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, at latitude30o22'30'' south and longitude 121o08'30'' east on the Kalgoorlie 1:250 000 geological map sheet (SH 51-9) (see Figure 1). The project is owned and operated by Centaur Nickel Pty Ltd (CTR) and was the first in Australia to commercially produce nickel metal and cobalt sulphide through pressure acid leach (PAL) technology. Cawse has a total resource base (all categories of resources + reserves) of 213 million tonnes Mt at 0.7 per cent Ni and 0.04 per cent Co, comprising 127 Mt at Cawse Central which is 100 per cent owned by CTR and 86 Mt at Cawse Extended where CTR has a 80 per cent equity. Cawse Extended is located immediately to the northwest of the Cawse Central leases. All current reserves (proved and probable) of 30 Mt at 1.0 per cent nickel are contained within Cawse Central. In addition the Siberia project area 20 kilometres to the NW has a resource of 63 Mt at 0.7 per cent Ni. Cawse is a dry laterite deposit, with nickel and cobalt hosted by iron and manganese oxides. Cawse Central mineralisation extends over a ten kilometre strike length, with three pits currently being mined. The Bunyip pit has the premier nickel and cobalt grades within Cawse Central. There are seven dominant lithology types forming mappable units within current pit exposures. Four of these units are host to nickel and cobalt mineralisation. Ore types are defined as Upgrade, Grind and Non-upgrade, depending on their physical characteristics with respect to the treatment route. Mining commenced in February 1998. To the end of calender 1999 the operation has produced 2100 tonnes nickel plate and 470 tonnes of cobalt as a cobalt sulphide product. Future production will target 9000 tonnes per annum Ni metal and up to 2000 tonnes per annum Co, based on processing 500 000 tonnes of ore per annum.

Ilmenite ore samples obtained from Dankoli in Zamfara, North Western Nigeria has been characterized using Energy Dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) technique, X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and the Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) technique. The major constituents in the ore were quantitatively found to be TiO2 and Fe2O3 in concentrations of about 60wt% and 31wt% respectively. These occur in the forms of magnesian ilmenite (Fe, Mg)(Ti, Fe)O3, pure ilmenite (FeTiO3), and barium copper yttrium oxide (Ba2Cu3YO6.56) minerals. Other constituents/impurities in minor or trace quantities include MnO, Ta2O5, Nb2O5, Wo, SnO2, Hf, Zn, V, Zr, Co, Pb, Br, Al, Rb, Y, Th and U.

La Oroya zinc ferrite (19.5% Zn, 26.6% Fe, 0.052% Ga, 0.075% In) was roasted with coal under conditions more oxidizing than normally used in a Waelz kiln, and the roasted residues were leached with 200 g/L H2SO4. Overall zinc recoveries of up to 97% were achieved, with 35% of the zinc reporting to the fume after roasting at 1,100°C with a bituminous coal addition of 20%. Under these conditions, 93.2% of the Cd, 13.4% of the Cu, 33% of the Ga, 61% of the In and 18.2% of the Pb were recovered either in the fume or in the leach solution. At 2006 metal prices, the value of the recovered metals is comparable to that obtained from commercial Waelz kiln processing of this residue. Zinc in the franklinite (ZnFe2O4) mineral is reduced to zinc vapor, and, after oxidation, some of the zinc is found as ZnO or as Zn2SiO4 in the roasted residue. Iron reacts to form either hematite (Fe2O3) or magnetite (Fe3O4), with no metallic iron detected in the roasted residue, and less than 2% of the iron is solubilized during leaching. The residue produced after roasting and leaching is, therefore, much more stable than the residue from Waelz kiln processing and should be suitable for disposal in a landfill.

To solve the problem of large deformation of deep soft rock roadway, taking the soft rock roadway of no. 1 coal mine in New Shanghai as an engineering example, the deformation mechanism of surrounding rock of deep soft rock roadway is analyzed by combining theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and field test, and the control countermeasures centering on deep and shallow dense drilling are put forward. Through theoretical derivation, based on the masonry beam theory, surrounding rock structure S-R stability principle and composite beam principle, the length, angle, and spacing of deep and shallow dense drilling are determined. Through numerical simulation, the deformation evolution process of soft rock roadway surrounding rock after dense drilling pressure relief is reproduced, and the influence of drilling parameters (drilling spacing, dip angle) on pressure relief effect is analyzed and compared. The field application test and monitoring verify that the deformation control measures of deep and shallow dense drilling broken roof surrounding rock have a good effect of large deformation control of soft rock roadway, and provide a new support means for the safety and stability control of soft rock roadway.

The Bureau of Mines, as part of a program to improve mine planning and development, is currently investigating the effects of pillar load transfer, which can impact mining operations wi.thin a multiple-seam configuration. At two mine sites where such ground interactions were present, the Bureau performed a complete geological analysis and installed and monitored instrumentation to gather pertinent data on rock mechanics. Overburden depth varied dramatically in the vicinity of the study area and reached a maximum at the study site; innerburden thick-ness was less than a pillar width (40 to 4S ft); heaving was experienced in both mines where sandstone and/or shale floor units were observed; overlays of the mine layouts show pillars were not totally superpositioned; a maximum of S in of roof to floor convergence was measured; and pressure readings indicated pillar core loading only and increased to a maximum of 7,000 psig over instrument setting pressure.

Michigan is becomining one off the important oil-producing States of the country, The amount of crude oil produced within its boundaries has increased from only 4,000 barrels in 19253/ to nearly 16 million barrels in 1935.4/ The Bureau of Mines method of crude-oil analysis and classification indicates that the oils from the several producing fields are predominantly paraffin-intermediate-base, wax-bearing crudes. In general, they will yield 25 to 35 percent of highly paraffinic gasoline and about the tame amount of kerosene and gas-oil combined, 12 to 15 percent of lubricating oil stock, and 20 percent of residuum with a carbon residue of about 6 to 7 percent. In addition, there appears to be some correlation between certain properties of the crude oils and both the geographical location and geological structure of the oil-producing areas within the State. These general conclusions are based on the analytical data presented in this report, which is one of a series of papers that record the general characteristics of crude oil from the many producing fields of the United States. This report discusses briefly the oil fields of Michigan and the characteristics of the crude oils produced from them. The analyses of 15 samples are given. Williams numbers his acquaintances in the mineral industries by the thousands and h because his principal hobby is liking human beings, most of his acquaintancs are also his friends. Clyde is one of the many outstanding metallurgist, in the United States who started as a chemist. After graduating from the University of Utah in 1915 he was successively chemist for U.S. Smelting Refining and Mining Co., and at the Bureau of Mines station at Ithaca, N.Y. This involves scheduling which quarry ledges should be mined and when in order to minimize unnecessary inventory buildup. Challenges associated with ILCI’s operation are discussed and summarized in the closing of this paper.

Forage plots were established on agricultural lands contaminated by acid mining waste. The acid produced through oxidation of pyrite and other sulfides caused elevated solubility and plant availability of copper, zinc, and arsenic which killed vegetation and polluted surface and groundwater. Soil amendments including agricultural lime (CaCO3), hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2), phosphorus, and organic matter were used to reduce the toxicity of metals. Several acid-tolerant grasses were used to vegetate the amended soils. Various soil extraction techniques were used to see which best correlated with vegetation performance. The extractions corresponded to three "forms" of metals in soil including soluble (water-saturation extract); plant-available/weakly adsorbed (DTPA extract); and total (HNO3/H202 extract). Of the extractants tested the DTPA levels appeared to correlate best with metal levels in plant tissue. The DTPA soil extractant serves as a useful tool in predicting potential phytotoxicity of mine waste materials.
