Ergonomics is the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data and methods to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance. Despite the fact that the application of ergonomics principles can make a major contribution to the management of significant occupational safety and health risks, ergonomics is currently applied on a limited scale in the South African mining industry. The objective of this paper is to provide a perspective of ergonomics, the main aim being to create a point of departure for the development of strategic objectives to enhance existing health and safety initiatives through the application of sound ergonomics principles. Two of the major consequences of poor ergonomics, namely work-related musculoskeletal disorders and worker fatigue, and possible means of introducing ergonomics into the South African mining industry, are discussed.

A device is described which is suitable for the automatic sampling of dust in dust laden flue gases. This device, called a Venturi Sampler, consists of two pipes each fitted with a suitably designed venturi.Both pipes are placed in the flue where one acts as an open-ended reference tube and the other as the actual sampling tube.The gas sampling rate is automatically controlled so as to maintain a zero differential pressure between pressure tappings in the two venturi throats. The venturies are so designed that under these conditions the gas velocity in the sampling pipe is always equal to the free gas velocity in the flue-that is isokinetfc sampling conditions are maintained.INTRODUCTIONThere is a constant need in industry for regular and accurate assessments of dust losses, both to assist in improving operating efficiencies in order to minimize losses, and to obtain accurate metallurgical balances. In many cases where sampling is carried out in dust laden gases, the existing sampling methods are both laborious and inaccurate, and often make no provision for changes in flue gas velocity while sampling is in progress.In the majority of cases where a measurement of dust losses in a stack or flue is required, a preliminary velocity survey is made with a pitot tube to establish the gas velocity at each of the points at which samples are to be taken. The sample of gas (and dust) is withdrawn through a tube connected via a flowmeter to an exhausting apparatus. Some means of removing the dust from the gas sample is placed in circuit ahead of the exhausting apparatus. This is often an alundum or paper thimble housed in a gas-tight container.The purpose of the flowmeter is to measure the actual flow of gas during sampling so that the sampling velocity at the inlet to the sampling tube may be calculated, and the flow corrected so that the sampling velocity will agree with...

This report describes the results of investigations into four specific areas related to trolley wire power distribution systems in coal mines. These are: 1. Partially insulated (shielded) trolley wire 2. High-speed insulator fault detectors 3. Dual-wire trolley systems 4. Insulator failure indicators. Prototype devices or designs were developed in each area. In addition, a brief survey was made in an attempt to assess the Future of mine trolley systems, and data was collected and reviewed in an attempt to analyze the nature of trolley wire related accidents. Other options for decreasing the risks associated with trolley systems that arose .during the study are briefly described in appendices. These include insulating equipment and miners from return and/or energized conductors and use of a segmented trolley wire with local control of current delivering capability.

Static loading teets of five nodular piles and four non-nodular piles were performed in Tianjin soft clayey soil in which measurements of axial force and movements were made. Distribution of shaft resistance and load-movment curves for pile head and pile toe are presented in this paper. The applicability of nodular piles to soft soil and their effectiveness are also discussed. Based on the comparison, it is concluded that nodular piles have an advantage over non-nodular piles mainly in contri­bution to shaft resistance. Dynamic testing was also conducted through R. P. T. for evaluating the service load of tested piles.

The Kiruna mine produced about 19 Mt processed iron ore in 1999 using sublevel caving. General failure in the hangingwall has been widely studied and its mechanism is rather well understood. Failure in the footwall is more recent and not perfectly explained. Plane shear failure and Hoek and BrayÆs circular failure charts were successfully used to match the first surveyed failure surfaces. The footwall is not free yet but covered by a caved waste rock abutment whose exact behaviour is poorly known. Based on new field data and numerical models (FLAC), the following paper presents recent improvements in understanding the Kiruna mineÆs footwall failure process.

Recent developments in geophysical borehole log analysis using the Geophysical Strata Rating (GSR) are now routinely used in a number Australian coal mining operations. This allows development of 3D geotechnical strata characterisation models for a range of purposes. The availability of this data provides a means to identify relationships between ground conditions and ground behaviour. As a result, several new design methods have been developed to assist in the strata management process such as roof support, longwall shield design and shaft stability assessment. Este trabalho objetiva o estudo da influência da adição de fibras vegetais de bambu e cana-de-açúcar nas propriedades mecânicas do concreto. Para este trabalho foram confeccionados corpos-de-prova cilíndricos e prismáticos nos quais foram adicionados 2% e 5% em volume das fibras à massa do concreto. Após a cura, conforme NBR 5738 (2003) [1], os mesmos foram testados via ensaios de resistência à compressão conforme NBR 5739 (2007) [2], resistência à tração por compressão diametral, conforme NBR 7222 (2011) [3], resistência à tração na flexão conforme NBR 12142 (2010) [4] e módulo de elasticidade estático, conforme NBR 8522(2008) [5]. Verificou-se após os testes que todos os concretos produzidos atenderam a resistência mínima a compressão de 20 MPa, recomendado pela NBR 6118 (2003) [6] para fins estruturais. Foi observado um aumento da resistência à compressão em relação à mistura padrão. O concreto com adição de fibras de bambu apresentou melhor resistência mecânica em relação ao concreto com adição das fibras de cana-de-açúcar e ao concreto sem adição.

The Clogau St DavidÆs gold mine has a recorded production of around 81 000 oz Au and it is the largest mine in the Dolgellau gold-belt and BritainÆs most prolific historical producer. The original mine was first worked for copper, however; in 1854, gold was found in waste material from the St DavidÆs section. In recent times the mine has operated intermittently between 1983 - 2007. The principal black shale-hosted gold-bearing reef (Main Reef) can be traced for about 3 km, striking approximately NE-SW and dipping steeply between 60¦ - 90¦ SE. The reef system pinches and swells, changes strike and splits into a number of smaller branches. Reef width is variable, ranging from over 6 m to a few cm and in places reducing to small irregular blobs. The reef is internally complex and composed of swarms of narrow (1 - 300 mm) subparallel veins separated by country rock sheets. The gold-bearing veins within the reef package are discontinuous; though generally possess bonanza grades running 10s - 100s oz/t Au. It has historically been shown that some gold-rich vein segments can grade up to 300 oz/t Au. The predictability of the gold-rich segments is poor, but has been shown to be related to presence of the Clogau (black shale) Formation, and/or the mechanical interactions of the reef with greenstone sills, reef branching and splitting and/or cross-fractures to form ore shoots. The mine is currently being re-evaluated as a potential small-scale selective operation.CITATION:Dominy, S C and Platten, I M, 2012. "Acid recovery is an important process step in pickling and leaching processes. Pyrohydrolysis in spray roasters and fluidized beds is a well-established technology to recover hydrochloric acid, but the hydrolysis in the liquid phase is more and more considered as an alternative new process route. The characteristic features of these three processes will be discussed along with select industry trends. For example, hydrochloric acid based leaching processes for ilmenite and nickel laterite ores produce far larger volumes of waste acid streams than the steel industry. Scaling-up of the spray roasting technology to the highest possible capacity is necessary in order to become more cost effective. In addition, process routes based on ferric chloride pyrohydrolysis allow the production of super-azeotropic HCl (up to 30 wt.%). Finally, the new ECOmode concept optimizes the operation of both pickling lines and the spray roast acid recovery plant. Long term results from industrial applications show that fuel savings in the spray roaster of 25% are easily achieved without additional process steps. An attractive feature is also to upgrade existing installations to higher plant capacities.INTRODUCTION Pyrohydrolysis is the conversion of metal halides into metal oxides at elevated temperatures in the presence of water vapor. Reaction products are a hydrogen halide gas and a metal oxide. The process was originally developed and introduced into the market by ANDRITZ Ruthner in the 1960’s. It has found wide technical application in the field of acid recovery and oxide production. The introduction of this process has revolutionized pickling technology. The use of hydrochloric acid has strongly increased over the last decades, since pyrohydrolysis is available for the total recovery of waste pickle liquors from mild steel pickling, as illustrated in Figure 1.Chloride media are also used increasingly in the metallurgical industry. Oxide production processes for Mg, Co, Ni, and Al have been installed. Processes using hydrochloric acid are known for the leaching of ores as well as for the re-extraction of metals from organic solvents. In both cases the recycling of HCl is of substantial importance to achieve highly economic processes and to reduce waste."

"The treatment of an oxidized copper-gold ore by stage cyanide addition was investigated. For cyanidation, free cyanide ion concentration can be an indicator of whether there is copper dissolved in cyanide solution, and maintaining the free cyanide ion concentration lower than 1.0 g/L could be an effective way to prevent copper dissolution and reduce cyanide consumption. For that purpose, stage cyanide addition was introduced to control free cyanide ion concentration within the range from 0.8 to 1.0 g/L. Cyanidation tests results indicate that gold extraction was still acceptable at reduced cyanide consumption with a lower copper extraction. Based on the experimental study, industry application works at Beiya concentrator of Yunnan province, China were successfully conducted. When the raw ore contains 2.95 ppm Au and 0.75% Cu, by stage cyanide addition method, the gold extraction was still 93% at reduced cyanide consumption of 2135 g/t, which was only half of one addition method, and the copper extraction dropped to only 5%, which indicated that dissolution was prevented for almost 75% of the malachites.INTRODUCTIONCyanide with its competency to form a strong complex with gold, is the most preferable lixiviant for gold leaching. However, cyanidation is not inherently a selective process since many other minerals present in the ore are also readily soluble, especially the copper minerals. Muir (2011) reported that every 1% reactive copper present in the ore consumes about 30 kg/t NaCN, which can have detrimental effects on the process efficiency and economics due to high cyanide consumption, reduced gold leach rates and poor gold recovery."

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo verificar a influência do Nióbio na trabalhabilidade a quente de um aço inoxidável duplex do tipo UNS S32304 em condições similares às do processamento industrial, utilizando ensaios de torção a quente. Foram fundidas, em forno de indução a vácuo, 4 corridas experimentais: uma com a composição química padrão e as outras objetivando-se teores de Nióbio de 0,2%, 0,4% e 0,8%. Ensaios de torção a quente foram realizados em resfriamento contínuo a partir de 1.200ºC, e ensaios isotérmicos no intervalo de temperaturas de 1.200 a 900ºC. O aumento da fração volumétrica de ferrita em função do aumento da concentração de Nióbio melhorou a trabalhabilidade a quente destas ligas.

Despite the current economic downturn that is now decimating iron ore production, Minnesota?s mining operators remain optimistic about the long-term prospects for the industry. Reflecting this optimism, the development of several new mining projects continues in the state. The future of mining in Minnesota was the featured topic at the combined 82nd Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 70th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium. More than 500 mining industry professionals, including engineers, executives, mining managers and equipment suppliers from the around the world, attended the meeting, which was held April 14 and 15, 2009, in Duluth, MN. The combined meeting featured a keynote session with three distinguished speakers plus a panel discussion by representatives from several of Minnesota?s taconite producers. The keynote speakers were Curtis Clark, president and chief operating officer, Behr Dolbear, who gave a presentation on the ?State of the Mining Industry.? Phil Newman, chief operating officer, CRU Strategies, spoke about challenges facing the mining industry and James A. Skurla, acting director, Bureau of Business and Economic Research, Labovitz School of Business and Economics, University of Minnesota Duluth, discussed the importance of mining to northeastern Minnesota?s economy. The taconite producers panel discussion included Jonathan Holmes, vice president and operations manager, ArcelorMittal; Ed Latendresse, vice president and general manger, Hibbing Taconite; John Tuomi, vice president operations services, United Taconite and Mike Mliner, vice president and general manager, Northshore Mining. The mangers provided updates on their respective operation The meeting included concurrent technical papers sessions on mining, processing, environmental and nonferrous mining. The sessions included technical papers that provided information on the status of a number of new mining projects in the state. The conference also offered a SME short course titled ?The basics of iron mining.? A tradeshow that featured about 100 companies and organizations offering products and services to Minnesota?s mining industry ran in conjunction to the conference. It was estimated that more than 900 people, including conference registrants and special invited guests of the vendors, attended the tradeshow opening reception. This was the largest trade show in many years. The Minnesota Section of SME also held its annual business meeting during the conference.

Results are presented of a census of the machines used in surface coal mines in the United States. The numbers of each machine type and model reported to be in use are tabulated for large and small mines in the Eastern, Central, and Western regions. Also tabulated are the average daily usage times of the major machine categories and the numbers of machines that have acoustical and other cabs. Projections of the total numbers of primary production machines are given. It is found that heavy tracked dozers and wheeled front end loaders constitute the most prevalent machine types, and that generally a very few models of machines made by one or two manufacturers constitute a major fraction of the population in each machine category. About 70 percent of all machines are reported to have some kind of cab, and about half of these are reported to be acoustical gabs; it is noted that acoustical cabs generally came into significant use since about the early 1970's. It is observed that the percentage-wise mixes of equipment types used in the various categories of mines differ significantly for only a few types of machines, notably for heavy dozers and loaders, and for haulers, highway trucks, and internal-combustion engine-powered shovels and draglines.

Agrium Incorporated has proven that they are leaders and innovators, as is evident in their recent deployment of a large-scale 802.11 wireless network in their underground potash mine located at Vanscoy, Saskatchewan. 802.11 is an IEEE standard for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) technology. Once every three years the eyes of the construction and mining industry?s turn to Munich, Germany for the bauma trade fair and exhibition. From April 19-25, Messe München International (MMI) will host the 29th edition of this massive show that, despite the recent recession and global financial struggles, has grown yet again. The show, which is completely booked, will take place on a record 555,000 m2 (5.9 million sq ft) of indoor and outdoor exhibition space at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre. More than 3,000 exhibitors are expected to make use of this event. To prepare for the show that highlights some of the largest and most impressive construction and mining equipment in the world, Messe München began working months in advance on getting the infrastructure on the open-air site ready, in time for the arrival of the gigantic machinery exhibits, which started to arrive in March. Part of the preparations include a new entrance at the northwest corner of the exhibition center that was built to regulate visitor flow better. This should help with bauma considering that in 2007 more than 500,000 visitors passed through the gates. ?Although in 2010 the construction machinery sector in many markets worldwide will be recovering only slowly from the recession, we are pleased to report that we are seeing strong demand for exhibition space. This shows that exhibitors regard participation in the world?s leading trade fair bauma as a must, although many are at present having to make cuts in their advertising and trade-fair budgets. We have been particularly surprised by the strong demand for space from exhibitors from markets like China, India and Turkey. The fair is fully booked and many more companies are on the waiting list,? said Eugen Egetenmeir, managing director of Messe München. More than 50 percent of the exhibitors at bauma 2010 come from countries outside of Germany. While the show?s primary focus is on the construction section, it is not as if the mining sector will be difficult to find. With some of the largest equipment in world on display in section C2 (Fig. 1), the mining industry is sure to be well-represented.

Rockfall drapery systems are commonly used as a simple, fast and cheap measure against the rock falling trajectories affecting very steep slopes. The system basically consists of a steel mesh, which is held on the top edge with a longitudinal cable fixed by means of a suitable number of anchors. The effect of this kind of intervention is to control the falls of the rocks, which are driven toward the bottom with slow velocity, or are stabilized on place. It can be used on any kind of slope to protect sensitive target in the mining industry, roads and railways, and inhabited areas. The falling blocks, typically smaller than 0.6 - 1.0 m in diameter, pile up into a trench (or into a ?pocket of mesh?) at the bottom. In comparison to other types of rockfall interventions, the simple drapery is cheaper, and its maintenance is easier, but on the other hand it cannot be considered the remedy for shallow instabilities, because it can only mitigate the effect of the falling trajectories. The design of simple draperies requires the analysis of several factors like the slope features (height, gradient, morphology), the geological and dynamic features (nature of the ground or rock, type of instability, erosion problem, blocks size), the environmental condition (presence of vegetation, aesthetical problem), the installation problem (accesses to the slope, safety for the workers, safety for the surrounding areas) and finally the performance required (temporary or permanent intervention, required maintenance, cost). Finally the most problematic design-step is the choice of the suitable mesh, the top longitudinal cable, and the top anchors type. Because of the highly variable nature of rockfall behaviour these structures cannot be standardized, but they have to be analyzed and designed for each case. Maccaferri has developed a new software application (MacRO 2) has a practical tool to define the mesh and the related supporting structure composed by up-slope cable and anchors. The software, based on the approach proposed by Muhunthan B. et al. (2005), allows designers to verify the top longitudinal cable, the anchors, and the mesh drapery, and to plan for maintenance procedures. Even if the method seems quite simple and rough, it is effective and lets the designer correctly foresee the materials and the geometrical features to be used on the interventions. This paper analyses the condition for the simple drapery installation, the main steps for the calculations, and it will present a case study in a U.S. mine. Nevertheless, even if the software allows a quick and simple calculation approach, onsite observations are always recommended in order to achieve a good design, with the ultimate goal of protecting property and human lives.

"In a previous publication, the depressant action of Mg above pH 10 on Cu-activated sphalerite was described (Lascelles et al., 2001). In the present communication, a second role, aggregation is introduced.Aggregation (i.e., the tendency of particles to cluster) is measured using settling rate and turbidity converted to an aggregation index (AI) where 0 corresponds to dispersed and 1 to aggregated. Surveys of Cu and Zn flotation stages at four concentrators showed the A1 increased significantly above pH 9. The metal ions identified in the process waters, principally Ca and Mg, were tested to determine which might be responsible. The presence of Mg was found to be the most important, 50 ppm Mg having a greater impact than 500 ppm Ca fkom pH 9 to 1 1. In one plant, poor repeatability in A1 was suspected to be related to varying Mg levels; doping with Mg significantly increased AI.In both aggregation and depression, therefore, the common feature is the impact of Mg at pH > 9. Over this pH range Mg forms a range of hydroxy species, including Mg(OH)2 precipitates. Suggested aggregation and depression mechanisms associated with these precipitates are introduced. Possible problems and opportunities arising from the findings are discussed.INTRODUCTIONProcess waters in flotation circuits contain a variety of metal ions that may introduce unwanted activation or depression. Two common metal ions are calcium and magnesium. Typical concentrations are in the range 50 ppm Mg and 500 ppm Ca (Marticorena et al., 1994, Basilio et al., 1996, Negeri et al., 1997, Nesset et al., 1998)."

"The basic concept of New Rheocasting (NRC) is described and the application of wrought alloys with this process is discussed. Practical experiments with the aluminium alloy AIMgSi I are explained. For this alloy the proper NRC - casting temperature was determined by using Thermo Cale - computer software and DT A and the essential processing conditions are shown. In the experiments the melt was taken from an aluminium holding furnace and cast into NRC steel cups. After controlled cooling the resulting slurries were cast into a 4-step die on an UBE HVSC 350 Squeeze Casting machine. The characteristic microstructural values such as grain size and shape factor were measured and compared with classical casting alloys. The influence of the wall thickness of the step part (6 mm, 10 mm and 14 mm) on the microstructure is described. Tensile properties in different heat treatment states are compared with characteristic prope1ties of the same alloys in forged condition. The ew Rheocasting - process CNRC)The NRC process is a recently developed new semi-solid processing method which allows the production of pore-free, pressure tight components.In the NRC process a fu lly liquid, but only slightly superheated melt is taken from a holding furnace and poured into specially designed steel crucibles, which are placed on a carousel next to the Vertical Squeeze Casting machine. In this ,NULL,slurry maker'· globul ar a-Al grains grow, following forced homogeneous nucleation at the cup wall [ 1, 2]. In the few minutes during which the melt is cooled to sem i-so lid processing temperature, a stable ske leton of a-Al phase forms. The resulting slug keeps a cylindrical shape during its slide into the sleeve of the Vertical Squeeze Casting machine, where it is cast into shape."
