Solis from an abandoned Pb battery processing facility were characterized prior to the selection of the extraction technique. Reflected light microscopy and electron beam methods were used to locate Pb-bearing phases and to quantify the compositions of the phases. It was found that the soils are composed primarily of quartz and feldspars with minor amounts of iron and titanium oxides. Lead is primarily present as an oxide or sulfate that is associated with the silicate minerals. Specific phases identified were PbO; Pb02; cerrusite, PbCO3; angleslte, PbSO4; galena, PbS; and magnetoplumbite, 2PbO3Fe2O3; or plumboferrite PbO2Fe2O3?

"The main processes for nickel metallurgy in China consist of electric arc furnace smelting to produce low grade nickel matte and converter to high grade nickel matte, grinding and flotation to separate nickel sulfide from copper sulfide and direct electrolysis of nickel matte. Systematic studies on the properties of electric furnace slag, smelting process for nickel matte, anodic process of nickel matte, cathodic process of nickel electrolysis have been done in our labs. In addition, an approach to a new hydrometallurgy process for nickel matte has been done. The feature of the new process is one stage acidic leaching of high grade nickel matte. The leaching solution could be purified by deposition way or by solvent extraction way. There are two leaching rate-determing steps, chemistry reaction-determing one at temperatures below 600C and diffusion-determing one at temperatures higher than 600 c. The acidic leaching fraction reacted dvaties with leaching time t according to the equation 1-(1- a ) 1/3=kt. The experimental data also show that the leaching reaction rate varies with concentrations of H+, Cl-, and it is also effected by copper sulfide and Cu++. The Cu++ ion can retard the leaching reaction due to forming a copper sulfide layer on the matte surface and the equation 1- 2/3 a. - (1- a: ) 2/3 akt can be used for the case. However the copper sulfide added into nickel matte can facilitate the leaching process. The research work for nickel metallurgy done by others in China has also been mentioned in this paper.Large scale production of nickel in China started in 1960s.The main processes consist of electric arc furnace smelting to produce low grade nickel matte and converter to high grade nickel matte grinding and floatation to separate copper sulfide from nickel sulfide and direct electrolysis of nickel matte.To reduce nickel loss in slag a reseaech group organized by Jinchuan Company and Central South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (now the Central South University of Technology) measured the viscosity surface tention density conductance melting point and structure of the slag(I).lt has been found that the physico-chemical properties of the slag depend on the components SiO2 ,MgO and FeO but FeO in the slag is too high and the statistic analysis of data from industry gave an equation to correlate the content of Ni in slag with the content of Ni in matte and the composition of slag again it was pointed out that the content of FeO in slag effected the loss of Ni in slag very much (2). The ratio (FeO+MgO) to SiO2shouid be less than 1.13 and the content of Fe3O4should be as low as possible but the reaction"

Phelps Dodge, Inc. (PD) is currently developing a lateritic nicke/Vcobalt deposit in Madagascar. Hazen Research, Inc. provides technical assistance to PD to investigate recovery processes for nickel and cobalt. Various process options were evaluated in laboratory experiments and pilot plant operations. The process selected for the feasibility study consists of feed preparation, high-pressure acid leach, countercurrent decantation wash, sulfide precipitation, sulfide dissolution, solvent extraction, ion exchange, and electrowinning. Among these unit processes, high-pressure acid leach, sulfide precipitation, and sulfide dissolution are applications of pressure technologies. Process development work and design criteria for commercial operations of these unit processes are presented in this paper. Concerns related to scaling in the high-pressure acid leach and the sulfide precipitation processes are discussed. Corrosion of various metal coupons under these environments was examined.

"The aim of the present paper is to use the two CFD codes to model the two phase flow in a water model ladle with central gas injection. The codes examined are CFX and Phoenics. An Eulerian two phase model is used and predictions are compared against the experimental data available. The results show that the codes can reasonably well predict the gas-liquid plume in the ladle, and predictions are generally in a good agreement with experimental data. However, differences do exist in predicting the gas volume fraction and velocity profiles. The results should be interpreted most carefully and cautiously, because they are very sensitive to the boundary conditions and dependent on the models for the physical phenomena involved. IntroductionSubmerged gas injection has widely been used in the metallurgical industry for more than a century. At the present, the use of gas is most effective in steelmaking industry where the advantages of the gas injection have already been long well understood. Effective mixing, large contact area between reactants, easy modifications and flexibility of the processes are the most important advantages. Disadvantages include refractory wear, blocking in the tuyeres, and splashing. These disadvantages can be reduced and advantages further improved by studying the flow phenomenon in process vessels. However, it is difficult to study flow in a real vessel because of the high temperatures and physical and mathematical modelling is therefore increasingly used in the process development work."

Magma Copper Company, a subsidiary of Newmont Mining Corporation, has initiated many changes in the continuous casting of 5/16 inch diameter copper rod since startup of the San Manuel rod plant in early 1972. With rod production at forty percent over design capacity, many production records have been established including a record cast of 761 tons of salable rod in a twenty-four hour period. The most challenging and rewarding introduction was the continued utilization of an alloyed copper casting wheel in lieu of the conventional steel wheel. With proper cooling and careful control of the mold release agents. as much as 58.000 tons of copper were cast on a single copper wheel. Other advantages are: 1) Fifteen percent increase in available casting time 2) Reject rod from steel inclusions was reduced by nearly one-hundred percent 3) Wheel cost was decreased by ninety-one percent 4) Natural gas consumption dropped approximately fifteen percent 5) Large increase in refractory component life 6) Reduction of manhours/ton. Many other modifications have contributed to excellent rod quality and high operating efficiency. A two-piece launder was replaced with a single castable launder which reduced oxygen pickup and provided better slag removal. Modifications to the bar preparation unit, pickling system, and coiler resulted in considerably higher milling efficiency.

Phases and magnetic evolutions of melt spun Nd9.5(Fe1-xCox)85.5B5 (x=0, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.15), (Nd1-yLay)9.5Fe85.5B5 (y=0, 0.0.5, 0.1; and 0.15) and (Nd0.95La0.05)9.5(Fe1-zCrz)81.5B9 (z=0, 0.033, 0.067 and 0.1) nanocomposites: have been investigated. It was found that a. dilute Co substitution for Fe, x=0:05-0:15, in Nd9.5(Fe1-xCox) 85.5B5 improved not only Curie temperature but also the remanence and maximum energy product. Partial substitution of La for Nd in(Nd1-yLay)9.5Fe85.5B5 may suppress the grain growth of the materials during thermal treatment. Exchange coupling between the Nd2Fe14B and a-Fe was found: to increase with increasing La content. A dilute La-substitution, y=O. 10, has proven to decrease the optimum wheel speed required for preparing melt spun ribbons with better magnetic properties; Furthermore; a slight substitution of La for Nd in (Nd0.95La0.05)9.5(Fe1-xCrx)81.5B9 nanocomposite reduced the crystallization temperature of the over-quenched ribbons and led to the formation of a multiple phases mixture. Nevertheless, a dilute Cr addition increases the Tg of (Nd0.95La0.05)9.5(Fe1zCrz)81.5B9 and also suppresses the formation of the undesired (Nd,La)2Fe23B3 and Fe3B phases: Cr was found to play an important role in grain smoothening or magnetic separation which consequently increased the Hc of Cr-containing materials.

"Slag system is an indispensable part during the continuous casting process, and playing various important roles like absorbing inclusions, modifying heat transfer rate, preventing oxidation of molten steel, etc. to ensure the smooth process and excellent slab quality. However most slags contains more than 8% fluorides which tend to introduce a series of environmental and health problems. This study involves the research of the removal of fluorine through the chemical composition optimization. Through the studies of CCT, DHTT, XRD and SEM, it has been successfully founded that the crystalline phase of Ca11Si4B2O22 discovered in this study shows very similar crystallization property as Cuspidine (Ca4Si2O7F2), which is the most important crystalline phase in the current fluorine bearing slags. Moreover, the optimized free/low fluorine slag shows the opportunity to replace conventional high-fluorine mold slag for casting medium carbon steels that is regarded as the bottleneck of green slag development for continuous casting.IntroductionMold flux has been widely used in continuous casting to control heat transfer, lubricate the strand, absorb inclusions, provide insulation and prevent oxidation of the molten steel[1-3]. It usually contains fluorides, like CaF2, NaF etc., which are used to control the viscosity and solidification temperature of mold fluxes [4-5]. However, the presence of fluoride leads to corrosion of equipment, serious environmental pollution (toxic volatiles and water pollution), and high processing cost of cooling water[6-7]. Therefore, the study of low or free fluorine mold flux is of interest and attracts worldwide attention.S. Y. Choi et al. [4] used B2O3 as a substitute for cuspidine in steel B2PB2) however, B2O3 content was extremely high (up to 30 w%). Other studies have investigated F-free mold flux by adding or optimizing components as MgO, Li2O, B2O3 et al[8-11]. However, most of these focused on the melting and viscosity issues or for low or ultra-low carbon steels, where crystallization tendency is not significantly strong. Very few studies regarding to the development of low/free Fluorine mold flux for casting medium carbon (MC) steels have been conducted, due to the difficulty of the crystallization and heat transfer control without the formation of cuspidine."

The Army Research Laboratory (ARL) has an interest in the recovery and processing of rare earth elements. At Montana Tech, elevated temperature chlorination of rare earth oxides is presently being investigated as a potential methods leading to the selective separation and recovery of rare earth elements from mineral ores and concentrates. After preliminary evaluation, ytterbium oxide was selected as a representative surrogate material for more extensive chlorination studies. Methods used to determine the conversion and recovery include X-ray diffraction (XRD) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis. These data have been used to establish and confirm process conditions that consistently yield high conversion efficiencies. Based on the promising results, further experimentation is underway to ascertain the metallurgical response of other rare earth oxides and carbonates to the roasting process. The end goal is to create a robust process for industrial application that has greater efficiency and reduced costs as compared to current practice.

Kidd Creek continuously-cast copper anodes are characterized by high levels of Se, Pb and Ag; the anode slimes constituents and their morphologies are controlled by both the anode composition and the casting process. Hollow Cu2Se spheroids and tube-like structures, enveloping Cu-Pb-As oxide and/or Cu2O, are present in the as-cast copper. During electrolysis, the selenides are liberated from the copper and accumulate in the slimes layer; the Cu2O and Cu-Pb-As oxide react rapidly with the electrolyte to form soluble species and PbSO4. Silver, which is present mostly as a solid solution in the anode copper, is also liberated during electrolysis and reacts with the Cu2Se to form (Cu,Ag)2Se. The ultimate composition of the selenides in the slimes layer depends mostly on the Ag and Se contents, but various other elements, including Au and Te, are also structurally incorporated. Although the selenides are the major Ag carrier, metallic silver also is present. A thin layer of Cu2O crystals sometimes forms at the copper surface, and may affect anode passivation. Copper sulphate is a common constituent and serves to agglomerate the slimes. Copper sulphate is present on both passivated and non-passivated anodes, but that observed on the passivated metal is present as a thick compact layer. Copper powder is associated with CuSO4.5H2O only on passivated surfaces.

A commercial CFD-code was used to solve isothermal flow fields of gas and liquid in a Peirce-Smith converter. The model was validated with a 1/4 scale water model, and parametric study. Limits of the modeling technique used were recognized, but calculated results indicate that the present model predicts the general flow field with reasonable accuracy. The model was used to examine general flow conditions in an industrial scale PS-converter. Typical scaling factors of physical models were also evaluated with the aid of predicted bubble distribution, patterns of the flow fields and magnitude of flow velocities. The numerical simulations were found to open new viewpoints to the fluid dynamic related phenomena in the PS-process.

"As a result of the high temperatures present in a Carbothermic Aluminum Process the content of aluminum and aluminum sub-oxide in the gases leaving this process is high. These gases as well as energy must be recovered. In a Vapor Recovery Unit were the aluminum compounds react in a series of Heterogeneous Non-catalytic Reactions forming solid, liquid and gas products. The different product phases depend on the temperature present in the system. In this work we present dynamic model of the Vapor Recovery Unit of a conceptual Carbothermic Aluminum Process. Because of the complexity of the system several models are developed and coupled to capture the essential physics of the multiphase reaction problem. A Shrinking Core Model describes the reaction mechanisms. Then material and energy balances are coupled with the thermodynamics properties from the FACT database of thermodynamic properties, resulting in a system of nonlinear Partial Differential Equations. In the paper we describe the model development and governing equations for the reaction mechanisms and fluid flow. Finally we review the numerical schemes created for the solution of the model system. The model can be used for control and design purposes.IntroductionThe Carbothennic Processes for producing Aluminum can be divided into two groups (Motzfeldt et al. (1989)) In the first approach pure alumina is produced and reduced to pure aluminum. In the second approach an alloy (e.g. aluminum and silicon) is made and then aluminum is produced from the alloy. The history of both processes has been described by Ginsberg et al. (1965). At least three aluminum producers began largescale testing of this process in the 60's Alcan, Pechey-Ugine and Reynolds. Alcoa did some smaller scale experiments.Alcoa was one of the first companies to produce aluminum by Carbothennic Reduction (Foster et al. (1956)) and US Patent 2,829,961 April 8, 1958. In this process a carbon containing molten aluminum phase was a floated on top of an oxy-carbide melt. During the cooling the dissolved carbon deposited as aluminum carbide. The carbide was then separated from the molten aluminum by a fluxing agent. This process was successful but economic unfeasible."

"Resource of metallurgical coke is becoming scarce, and although coke can be partially replaced by pulverized coal injection, there are many restrictions for further increase in coal ratio. Mixed charge of ore and lump coal from top to replace more coke was studied in this paper. Softening-melting property of the burden was affected by charge of lump coal. Softening-melting properties of mixed charge of ore and coke, mixed charge of ore and lump coal were tested respectively. Results show: the property of the burden mixed with coke is superior to the burden mixed with lump coal; lump coal would not deteriorate softening-melting property of the burden and some of them can even improve softening-melting property of the burden. Top charge of lump coal would not deteriorate softening-melting process, and this should be a new way to increase coal consumption to decrease coke rate.IntroductionThe blast furnace is still the predominant process for the reduction of iron ore and will probably remain so for the next decades. Metallurgical coke is becoming scarce and expensive, so the cost of hot metal can be decreased by reducing the consumption of metallurgical coke[l]. Coke can be partially replaced by pulverized coal injection, currently the highest rate of pulverized coal reached 266kg/tHM, most of blast furnace PCR is about 150kg/tHM, and it is very difficult to further increase of PCR. Nut coke is charged into blast furnace mixed with iron ore, not only for improving utilization of metallurgical coke, but also for lowering the coke rate. Presently the majority of blast furnaces in the world use nut coke although its amount is very different: from 10-20 to 70--100 kg/tHM and more[2-4].The effect ofnut coke in blast furnace is extensively researched, and the main conclusions recommend: to improve gas permeability of cohesive layer in blast furnace, to promote reduction of iron burden, protect metallurgical coke from the solution in the shaft due to higher reactivity of nut coke. There is no special requirement for the strength of nut coke[5-8]. Nut coke is also used for sintering fuel, which may lead to the shortage of the nut coke charging into blast furnace. So lump coal mixed with iron ore is considered to be charged into the blast furnace, not only to reduce the cost of grinding coal, but also to increase the use amount of coal."

Over 425 million used automotive oil filters are discarded in the United States each year. Estimates prior to this research claim that 10% are recycled with the remainder typically being landfillcd. Surveys conducted with ferrous scrap users and oil filter processors as part of this research reveal that at least 15% are currently being recycled as ferrous scrap. Oil filter scrap is not being used by many operations because of concerns with scrap consistency and quality. These concerns stem from trials conducted in the infancy of the oil filter recycling movement. Consistent scrap quality depends both on the content of the used oil filters and the processing technique used to produce the scrap. Technology has advanced since the first recycling trials were conducted by steelmakers. Several different types of scrap are available, including pucks, bricks, cubes, and shred. This research conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla investigated the content of used oil filters and compares the recyclability of different oil filter sizes and designs. Filters vary by application and vary between manufacturers for a particular application. An understanding of the scrap itself as well as the concerns and problems of both oil filter recyclers and oil filter processors is necessary to increase the number of used oil filters being recycled.

During the non-ferrous metal processing, the melting step under vacuum or under rarefied gas leads to volatile metal losses. It is the case of the metallurgical processing of the nickel-based, titanium-based or zirconium-based alloys where the evaporation losses don't allow a sufficient control of the alloy chemical composition. A theoretical approach has been carried out involving both a continuum description in the liquid phase and a molecular approach in the rarefied gas phase. The finite volume method is used in order to solve the coupled transport equationsin the liquid, whereas the Boltzmann equation is modelled by using a Monte Carlo method. At the liquid metal and metallic vapor interface, the volatilization and recondensation fluxes link up the two calculations. Simulation results are given for the melting and refining of reactive metals such as titanium alloys where the control of the chemical composition remains a major difficulty. The validity of the kinetic Langmuir's law is discussed for different operating conditions.

Refractory sulfide gold ores or concentrates require an oxidation pretreatment step to yield the contained gold amenable to the subsequent leaching step. The process options for oxidation pretreatment can be broadly classified as follows: roasting, high or low pressure oxidation bacterial oxidation, chemical oxidation, each with a number of alternative suboptions. Roasting and high pressure oxidation are being applied on an industrial scale; the stage of development of the other options range from preliminary laboratory to advanced pilot plant- In this paper, the major technical, environmental and economic aspects of the above processes are being discussed. Future industrial trends will also be considered. Particular emphasis will be placed on the treatment of arsenical ores and concentrates, where safe plant operation as well as, handling and disposal of the arsenic containing products and/or effluents 'and residues is of paramount importance.

The Cerro Verde Hydrometallurgical Plant, located at Arequipa in the southern part of Peru, started its operation in 1977 with a design capacity of 33,000 MT/year of copper cathodes. The plant has treated 61,055,000 MT of ore mainly oxides with a content of 1.01% total copper and 0.67% of soluble copper. The leaching plant has three pads that produce 4.0 gpl copper solution. The solvent extraction plant has four trains with three extraction stages, two stripping stages with a single mixer in all stages. The mixer-settlers are 316 stainless steel and the pumps are vertical turbines. The flowrates of 1,300 gal/mil of aqueous and 1,300 gal/min of organic at a 1/1 ratio. The electrowinning plant contains 208 commercial cells and 18 starting sheet cells. Each cell has 47 anodes and 46 cathodes. In addition to describing the hydrometallurgical plant, this paper also mentions efforts directed at reducing costs and improving operations. The initial results from leaching secondary sulfides, which started October 1985, are also discussed.

"Emission of CO2 gas from steelmaking industry covers more than 12 % of total CO2 emission in Japan. Though many efforts have been made to curtail energy consumption and high energy efficiency of Japanese steel production process has been achieved so far, further reduction of CO2 emission is strongly requested to develop sustainable steel production process and produce “green material”. Recently, authors have proposed the innovative hydrogen production process, in which water vapor is reacted with discharged steelmaking slag to produce hydrogen gas. This reaction can be achieved without any external energy source and operated by huge thermal energy associated with steelmaking slag and FeO or unrecovered Fe droplets that are relatively rich in the slag. In this paper, thermodynamic calculation results with various initial conditions in terms of hydrogen productivity were presented. Laboratory-scale experiments were also conducted to clarify the validity of thermodynamic calculation and the reaction rate in realistic conditions.IntroductionIronmaking and steelmaking process from iron ore through blast furnace and BOF is an essential steel production route for Japanese steel industries to supply high quality steel products in large quantity to society stably. Blast furnace – BOF process requires huge amount of fossil fuels such as mainly coal, resulting the emission of considerable amount of CO2 gas. Since the emission of CO2 gas from steel industries, about 147 Mt (FY2011), accounts for approximately 12 % of domestic CO2 gas emission in Japan (FY2011),[1] it is an urgent issue for steel industries to develop environmental-friendly ironmaking and steelmaking process and reduce CO2 emission. Various kinds of gases and by-products generated from ironmaking and steelmaking processes have been recycled as much as possible at present. Enormous thermal energy is also generated from processes and released to surrounding atmosphere as various forms such as sensible heats of gases, molten steels or by-products, and as heat losses. However, these energies are not utilized before final dissipation to atmosphere. Although various technologies to utilize thermal energy from ironmaking and steelmaking processes have been attempted to develop, practical application of these technologies has not been achieved because the thermal energy is not always useful as an energy source. In steelmaking process by BOF, fluxing agent such as CaO is added during reefing and thus about 100 kg/t-steel of steelmaking slag are generated. Since the steelmaking slag is discharged at temperature range between 1873 and 1923 K after discharge of refined molten steel, it also has large thermal energy. Amount of generated BOF slag is 11.0 Mt/y (FY2012) in Japan.[2] Assuming the amount of steelmaking slag is 10 Mt/y and its average heat capacity from room temperature to 1923 K is 1 kJ/kg·K,[3] unutilized heat is estimated to be 16 PJ/y, which is equal to annual energy consumption of 420 thousand families in Japan.[4]"

"Experiments were performed under terrestrial gravity (lg) and during parabolic flights (10·2 g) to study the solidification and macrosegregation patterns of Al-Cu alloys. Alloys having 2% and 5% Cu were solidified against a chill at two different cooling rates. Microscopic and Electron Microprobe characterization was used to produce rnicrostructural and macrosegregation maps.In all cases positive segregation occurred next to the chill because of the shrinkage flow, as expected. This positive segregation was higher in the low-g samples, apparently because of the higher heat transfer coefficient.A 2-D computational model was used to explain the experimental results. The continuum formulation was employed to describe the macroscopic transports of mass, energy, and momentum, associated with the solidification phenomena, for a two-phase system. The model considers that liquid flow is driven by thermal and solutal buoyancy, and by solidification shrinkage. The solidification event was divided into two stages. In the first one, the liquid containing freely moving equiaxed grains was described through the relative viscosity concept. In the second stage, when a fixed dendritic network was formed after dendritic coherency, the mushy zone was treated as a porous medium.The macrosegregation maps and the cooling curves obtained during experiments were used for validation of the solidification and segregation model. The model can explain the solidification and macrosegregation patterns and the differences between low- and high-gravity results."

"The disposal of wastes is a serious environmental problem, since available landfill space is dwindling. Their treatment by pyrolysis or combustion has merit, and the corresponding fuel or power production is of technological interest. However, such processes need a rigid control of emissions. This work addresses the gaseous light hydrocarbons (LHCs) generated during sequential pyrolysis and partial oxidation of unserviceable tires, PET bottles, com wastes (DDGS) and sugarcane bagasse in a two-stage laminar-flow horizontal furnace, kept at 1000 °C. Gas chromatography was used to identify and quantify the components of the emitted gaseous light hydrocarbons. The results showed that the biomass residues generated the highest emissions of aliphatic hydrocarbons, whereas PET generated the most aromatic hydrocarbons. When stainless steel meshes were inserted in the exhaust flow, it was found that hydrocarbon emissions were curtailed; as such meshes catalyzed partial conversion of these carbon-bearing gases to carbonaceous nanomaterials.IntroductionLight hydrocarbons (LHCs) are volatile organic compounds, consisting of hydrogen and carbon with low molecular weight; the most common species are methane, ethane, propane, butane, etc. LHCs are valuable since they are a very important energy resource. However, uncontrolled release of light hydrocarbon gases to the atmosphere should be avoided [l, 2]. In this work, a development is presented for the evaluation of LHCs generated during the controlled pyrolysis/combustion of several wastes in a two-stage laminar-flow horizontal furnace. Samples of unserviceable tires, post-consumer PET bottles and waste residues from the bioethanol industry (DDGS and sugarcane bagasse) were burned. A catalyst system, consisting of stainless steel screens, was tested for its effects on the gaseous emissions."

It is invariably certain that after punching for IC Leadframes, scrap metal were generated. These seraps were re-dissolved and in order to use as raw material for leadframes, it is necessary to remove the Ni plating. In this study a simple method was developed for the removal of Ni plating by surface oxidation of Ni plating. For this purpose a fundamental study was carried out on the oxidation behavior of Ni plating. Results showed that by controlling the oxidation condition, a considerably high rate of Ni could be removed.
