[Generally accepted formula related to sulfur slag-metal distribution ratio is given by the following equation: [ ] According to the above equation it can be deduced that sulfur distribution between slag and metal is governed mainly by metal composition (?s term), slag composition (slag basicity and in turn sulfide capacity), oxygen potential of the system (ao¬¬ term) and temperature(related to equilibrium constant, K). In this study, the results of ladle furnace operations conducted in Erdemir-Iron and Steel Works Co. (Turkey) in relation to sulfur removal, have been given. Typical ladle furnace slag analyses of 4937K quality steel have been presented. Activity coefficient of FetO,?FetO, have been calculated with the relation obtained fromthe literature. Activity calculations have been performed with the program written in Mathcad. The changes in activity of aFetO in the slag phase,, have also been studied in relation to the sulfur removal: The relation between % Decrease aFetO and %DeS (measured)have been investigated for 4937K runs and someother types of steel produced in the Erdemir Plant. Related to ladle operations %desulfurization defined as [(%Sinitial-%Sfinal)/S%initial]*100 values have been presented for different steel qualities.]

The effects of alkali metal ions Li+, Na+, K+and transition metal ions Cr3+ and Mo6+ on the cathodic current efficiency, deposit quality, crystallographic orientations, deposit morphology and polarisation behaviour of the cathode during nickel electrocrystallisation on stainless steel substrate from aqueous sulphate solutions containing boric acid were investigated. The alkali metal ions had virtually no effect on the cathodic current efficiency, deposit quality, crystallographic orientations, deposit morphology and cathodic polarisation. On the other hand, there were significant variations in the current efficiency and deposit characteristics when Cr3+or Mo6+ were present in the electrolyte. Current efficiency decreased by more than 10% even at lower concentrations (> 100 mg/L). Similarly purity of the deposits was affected by the presence of either of the metal ions. In the presence of Cr3+, there was progressive shifting of the nucleation potential of nickel towards more negative values, whereas, in the case of Mo6+the nucleation potential shifted initially towards positive values in the concentration range 2-40 mg/L, but then towards negative values when its concentration exceeded 40 mg/L.

"India’s present annual marine fish catch is 2.9 million tonnes and its low value fishes such as sardines, sciaenids, goat fishes and leiognathids amount to 60%. The fish meal obtained from these resources is mainly used presently as an ingredient in live stock and aquaculture feeds. These fishes offer vast scope in the production of pet foods. Pet foods prepared with leiognathid fish meal (60%), maize flour (10%), wheat flour (5%), vitamin and mineral mixture (5%) and water (20%) and experimented with 50 cats and 50 dogs were found to be ideal. Depending on protein level, feeds are being formulated for experimenting with more number of pet animals. "The use of the Electric Pulse Discharge method of materials destruction (EP) for disintegration of materials in an industrial-waste processing are examined. The principles and Experience of the development device of EP-disintegration have been described, the technological efficiency of disintegration of industrial minerals estimated.IntroductionThe Russian scientists have proposed and comprehensively studied the electric pulse (EP) technique which is applied in ores and materials disintegration [1, 2 ]. The different aspects of the problem have been presented by the authors in papers at many international congresses [3-6]. Recently the technique is intensively developed in many countries, and various disintegration installations are exhibited.Crashing and disintegration of ores by EP-method is characterized by high selectiveness of destruction. It provides better disclosure of mineral grains and prevent it from destruction. EPmethod reduces slurry formation. All this provides better mineral extraction at ore beneficiation and improves concentrate quality. It also prevents the product from polluting with equipment metal, inwall and grinding equipment material. The possibility to change the character of dynamic loading allows controlling grain-size composition and getting small-size product in contrast to mechanical method of crashing.The product of EP-crashing is characterized by less toughness and greater specific surface area of grains since the new surface is formed at splitting and chinks extension. The product is of high sorption and reactivity in chemical changes. Open grains of mineral spots correspond to their natural condition and it is of great importance for studying mineral.The principles of the development deviceLong-term studies of the technique carried out by research institutes such as Research Institute of High Voltages (Tomsk), Kola Science Centre of RAS (Apatity), Institute ""Mekhanobr"" (S.Pertersburg), made it possible to substantiate principles of the disintegration installations design, make exploratory stands and technological installations to carry out pilot tests and operations under production conditions. The construction design of disintegrating installations depends on many technological and physical factors. Of all the technological factors, the most significant one is to preserve the liberated product because it is the peculiarity of the EPdisintegration to have high selectivity of disintegration. The preservation of the mono-mineral product liberated from the rock mass means that this product is not overgrinding, which causes the loss of the product with slime in processing, and that the initial natural form of the mineral inclusion is also preserved because it is the size and the integrity of crystals that determines its cost value (precious minerals). On the one hand, it is provided by a stage disintegration technique, with the product classified after each stage, and, on the other hand, by selection of specific conditions of electric breakdown, which ensure high performance of electric breakdown and effective disintegration of material fragments, with the useful mineral inclusions preserved intact, with its size considerably exceeding the discharge gap. These conditions are provided by the appropriate geometry of electrodes, the discharge gap and the screen size due to the material’s nature and grain size."

A long term research project is in progress to establish the parameters of an acid leach process to recover alumina 'froui' high-iron and/or low-iron white bauxites, kaolinite, coal. ash and copper mine tailing. In this paper the results of acid leaching of copper flotation tailing for the removal of alumina are presented. The tailing is very complex material which contains 25% Al203 in the -10 lim fraction. X-ray diffraction indicates presence of quartz, kaolinite and minor 'alunite. After classification and ,separation of the -10 lim fraction, the raw material is fired to 550GC and leached at 90GC. Filtration is applied for the separation of white silicate residue form leach liquid. After the purification step, aluminum salt is crystallized from the solution, and calcined to alumina. Kinetic correlation and regime, of the processes are defined and presented in the paper.

In February 1996, ATLANTIC, COPPER completed the construction of a Project for Expansion and Environmental Improvements in its Smelter and Electrolytic Refinery located in Huelva. Following the expansion, the new operating concept is based on the simultaneous blowing of two converters, while increasing throughput in the Flash Furnace up to the level required to deliver matte to both converters. While the production level planned with the Project.(270,000 MTPY of copper from concentrates) was reached the following June, work since then has been carried out to optimize the new equipment .and to develop a new operating shedule. This paper describes operational experiences from the start up of the Expansion Project, difficulties encountered and operating improvements introduced, which have allow an increase of production levels up to 300,000 MTPY of copper.

The copper concentrate market is becoming increasingly unstable. In the early 1990s large concentrate stocks were built up and the glut was cleared only after treatment charges rose so sharply that 'non-traditional' custom smelter capacity, such as in Kazakhstan, could be employed, By 1994 the market had shifted and Western smelters were unable to secure enough concentrates to operate full out. The reason for these sharp swings in the market balance is that virtllally all the recent mine development has been non-integrated. With different companies developing new mine . and smelter capacity, it is inevitable that the pace of expansion in the two sectors will not be coordinated. For many years the Japanese smelters were the major buyers from the new mm-integrated mines. However, Japanese smelter capacity is unlikely to increase appreciably in the future and this stabilizing influence will be very difficult to replace. This paper will examine the likely concentrate/smelter balance over the next five years and will forecast the likely direction of? treatment charges. It will also touch on the critical variables in assessing the viability of new greenfield custom smelter capacity, such as proximity to concentrate sources, by-product sulfuric acid prices and, most importantly, tariff protection.

The unique physicochemical properties of room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) have led to intense interest in these materials as alternatives to conventional organic solvents in a range of synthetic, catalytic, and electrochemical applications. Recently, there has been growing interest in their potential use in various separation processes, among them the liquid-liquid extraction of metal ions. Although certain RTIL-extractant combinations (e.g., crown ethers in 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethylsulfonyl] imides) have been shown to provide extraction efficiencies far exceeding those observed with conventional solvents, recent work suggests that the utility of RTILs may be limited by solubilization losses and difficulties in recovering extracted metal ions. In this work, we demonstrate that these limitations arise, in part, from differences in the mechanism of metal ion partitioning in RTIL systems versus conventional organic diluents and consider approaches by which they might be overcome.

The topic of the industrial applications of mineralogy is a vast field which can be adequately covered only in a large book or by a two or three semester course. This paper recalls experiences of the writer in this field, a task requested by the Process Mineralogy Committee. Therefore, this paper is largely an account of the industrial mineralogy problems I was involved with, since my student years, Although I will treat each application only briefly, it is hoped that they will illustrate to the students in the field how varied are the applications of mineralogical methods. In this respect, I want to emphasize that it is important for mineralogy teachers to point out the usefulness of mineralogical methods much more often in their courses. Not only does that help prepare young individuals for industrial careers, but also it arouses their feeling of consciousness of public responsibility which is an important attribute for the world's scientists. When professors utilize the varied applications in their teaching of mineralogical methods students then understand better the significance of learning those methods and appreciate the many years of necessary university preparation. The first time I was involved in an application of mineralogical methods was about 1944 as a student of Professor Paul Niggli. He was asked to study the problems of ice crystallization on wings of airplanes. The ice formed at high altitudes and during the winter. This was not outside his realm of expertise because he was the main initiator of the Snow Research Institute on the Weissfluhjoch in Switzerland. I believe that the work of this Institute was an important factor in stimulating much of the snow research subsequently carried out at the United States Army Snow Research Center, which was located at that time in Willmette near Chicago. Dr. Bader, one of Paul Niggli's former students, was the Director of Research at Wilmette at that time and for quite a number of years thereafter. A mineralogist-crystallographer can make important contributions to a better understanding of the problems of snow and ice formation, avalanche hazards, and the prevention of hail. "Nearly all the easy things have been investigated in injection metallurgy. Water models have been used exhaustively to study mixing, gas distribution and flow in submerged jets. Mathematical models have been developed with their restrictive boundary conditions to quantify submerged gas jet behavior. While being valuable tools to our understanding of injection metallurgy, there is an obliqueness to their application. What we need now are measurements and modelling on the actual systems, hot and unfriendly, where gas meets liquid at temperatures above l000°C. This is where the challenge lies.AN APPRECIATONThere are those who follow the trail and there are those few who blaze new trails in search of novel concepts and processes. With his restless, inventive mind, Howard Womer is a trail blazer without doubt. Decades ago, he was a pioneer in the pursuit of continuous steelmaking with the WORCRA Process and, today, he is developing new processes for the treatment of waste. He is not only an inventor but has been a professor at the University of Melbourne and was the first Director of Research at BHP. He has influenced the lives of many people, including myself; with his achievements and humanity. Therefore it is most fitting that this symposium should be held in honour of Howard Womer, a luminary in the metallurgical world for over half a century.BACKGROUNDGas injection has been an integral part of pyrometallurgical processes since the early days of Bessemer, then of Pierce and Smith. Today, of course, one cannot imagine pyrometallurgical processes without submerged gas injection to effect reactions for metal extraction and refining, to provide mixing and to inject solids into molten metal, slag or matte. Spurred on by new developments like tonnage oxygen and argon production, the Savard-Lee concentric tuyere and porous plugs, new steelmaking processes have emerged; and now solids injection is changing copper extraction processes. The ingenuity of the extractive metallurgists who drove these developments is inspiring for they have applied gas injection to transform pyrometallurgical processes. Humankind has been the beneficiary.' Today these processes are safer, more efficient, cost effective, less energy intensive and more environmentally friendly."

In 1987, Echo Bay discovered a major silver/gold ore body at their McCoy property in Nevada, and quickly made a decision to build a 5000 tpd mill which was expanded during the design to 7500 tpd. Since the ore reserves consisted of cyanide leachable oxide as well as sulfide, the plant flow sheet involved an oxide leach, a gravity circuit, and lead sulfide and a pyrite sulfide recovery by flotation. The paper describes the process development, equipment selection, plant design and the startup of the oxide treatment.

Judging from the list of papers to be presented over the next three days, the Symposium promises to provide a most valuable addition to our existing knowledge base in what is now an extremely active area of R&D investigations. Whilst we have obviously come a long way since Sir Henry Bessemer's pioneering experiments of the mid-19th century, there is still much for us to learn.Most importantly, the Symposium offers a further opportunity to acknowledge the many significant technical contributions made in this field by the Organising Committee's special guest, Professor Howard Worner - one of this country's most respected research leaders.When first approached to give this talk I had two areas of concern. Firstly, I was not entirely clear just what injection metallurgy was meant to cover. How should the overall scope of this particular subject be defined?My second concern related to Howard Worner himself - a man for whom I have the highest personal regard and who, in fact, played a most influential role in respect of shaping my own career. Having already spoken about Howard's achievements on earlier occasions, I wondered what I could sensibly add.Notwithstanding these personal reservations, I am delighted to be here with you this morning. If my thoughts on the meaning and scope of injection metallurgy appear to be slightly off-course, and if Howard should perhaps recognise some repetition in my remarks, then I hope I can be forgiven."

Recovery of aluminum metal from drosses? is a major factor in the recyclability success story enjoyed by the United States aluminum industry. Today's modern dross processor uses the latest technology to maximize metal recovery at the lowest cost while complying with all environmental laws and regulations. Most dross processors, however, pay little attention to the resulting saltcake, the end residual of dross recyCling, and rely on landfills for .disposition of this material.. The alternative is to recycle the saltcake, but the success of this technology is dependent on the development of reliable outlets for each of the saltcake constituents. This paper discusses the evolution of an aluminum dross oxide processing technology that ,produces an economically attractive source of alumina for the production of portland cement.

The influence of coal desulphurization by fungus was experimentally studied. The present results suggest that fungus can effectively remove inorganic and organic sulfur in coal. The main factors that influence the desulphurization by fungus such as pH value, temperature, coal slurry concentration and coal granularity are studied by orthodox experiment and the optimal experimental conditions are as follows: pH value 6, temperature 45 C, coal slurry concentration 10% and coal granularity 100 m. Under the above conditions, fungus can remove up to 44.96 total sulfur and 54.87 inorganic sulfur within two days and their desulphurization rates will increase along with time. Compared to sulfolobas, desulphurization by fungus is steady and more effective and has the advantage of high speed.

The system of short term forecast of metal prices at LME is based on correlation between prices within the quarter forward and at the first place by economic parameters at the West, determining the consumption of metals. Such economic parameters are presented by data of indexes of Western World industrial production (WW IP), official data of IP and Dow Jones indexes at USA. For price forecast within the quarter forward (one day ahead, 3 day -65 days MA forward prices) are significant the changes of actual prices (official and close) at the past and the parameters of daily trade at LME at the past (futures turnover, open interest, LME stocks). It is developed subsystem of price forecast within the quarter forward based on analytical approach determining the relations between the participants of the market. It gives the opportunity to reduce the number of empirical coefficients at the model and receive good accuracy of forecast the MA prices and its direction at the future. Very important part of short term forecast is subsystem determining analytically the probability that the price forecasted for the next trading day will be the maximum or minimum daily price within the quarter forward. The thresholds probabilities are defined by identification the model at the past by maximal commercial efficiency. Such system was tested at the past at period since 2000 till 2005 and gives very high commercial results at operations on 1M forwards and hedging the sales of nonferrous metals traded at LME (primary aluminium, light alloys, nickel, copper, zinc, lead and tin).

Waste acids containing phosphoric, acetic, nitric and hydrofluoric acid were produced during the etching process of liquid crystal display and semiconductor manufacture. In recent years, the attention on the treatment of industrial waste acids has been increased considerably according to the reinforcement of the environmental regulations as well as the implementation of the economic considerations about the waste acids. Fundamental studies on the separation and regeneration of the mixed waste acids were conducted using Cyanex 923, Tri-octyle phosphate and 2-Ethylhexyl alcohol as an extractant by solvent extraction. It is considered that the extraction of liquid crystal display waste acids with Cyanex 923 and Tri-octyle phosphate, semiconductor waste acids with 2-Ethylhexylalcohol is applicable for the separation and recovery of acid. Finally, the acceptable recycling process from the multi-component waste etching acids was proposed.

Extracellular bacterial protein (EBP) from Paenibacillus polymyxa was isolated. Adsorption of bacterial cells of Paenibacillus polymyxa as well as EBP onto pyrite, galena and sphalerite was studied. Both bacterial cells and EBP was found to have different adsorption density for different minerals. Protein from mineral surfaces were extrated and examined through SDS PAGE electrophoresis. Specific group of protein was found to be adsorbing, specific to respective minerals. EBP was fractionated through FPLC. Adsorption studies were carried out with each fractions. Difference in adsorption density was observed for individual minerals. Flocculation and flotation experiment were carried out with these mineral specific EBP. Pyrite was selectively removed from ternary mixture of galena and spharite through flocculation anf flotation using pyrite specific EBP. Mineral specific EBP was found to selectively separated remove pyrite from the complex sulphide mixture.Zetapotential studies were carried out to examine the surface chemical changes of the minerals on interaction with EBP. Hydrophobicity of the minerals were carried out on interaction with bacterial cells as well as mineral specific EBP.

"Lead alloys electro-winning from chloride melts was under investigation. Impurities concentration in cathode lead is strongly depended on temperature, electrolyte composition, anode current density. The equilibrium electrode potentials of lead-antimony alloys with the various content of electropositive metal in the alloy were investigated in the wide temperature interval. Thermodynamic properties of Pb-Sb alloys containing 20-95 mol% of Pb were studied by EMF method in temperature interval 723-873K in molten mixture of potassium and lead chlorides. Partial and integral thermodynamic characteristics were calculated. Small negative deviations from Raul’s law were found. Anode processes were investigated. The lead dissolution was found to be the only process in certain interval of current densities and electropositive metal content in alloy.IntroductionAt present human race is facing the problem of pollution by lead and its compounds and also the pollution influence on population health all over the world. One of the solution ways is the recycling lead containing technical wastes by ecologically clean technologies.World scientific community pays much attention to the electrolysis of molten salts. The usage of salt mixtures, as electrolytes, discovers new possibilities in the production of metals, metal compounds and alloys. ?????????? of the electrolysis at the temperature 50 - 200 °? above the melting temperature of chosen salt mixture allow to unbreaks processes, that undergo in the pre-electrode layer. The rate of the electrodepositing of elements are much higher than in the water electrolytes. At present there are technologies developed for production of metals (Ta, Nb, Ti, Zr, Hf, Ca, Al, Mg, Be, Li and others) by the electrolysis of the melts. Electrolysis of melts might be used in order to convert different technological formations containing lead and other nonferrous metals, that produced by different enterprises. According to the level of the influence on the living organisms lead is in the group of highly dangerous substances alongside with arsenic, cadmium, mercury, selenium, zinc, etc. Toxity and ability to accumulate in the human organism are two main sources of danger for the human being."

While calcium ferrite slags have been successfully used in continuous copper converting for the last 30 years, ferrous calcium silicate slag was proposed about 8 years ago as an additional alternative for copper smelting. Although both slags are normal extensions of each other their phase relations have not been completely clarified. In this paper the liquidus relations of both slags have been quantified at various areas that cover both of them. The existing experimental data have been first reviewed and discussed in relation to the solidification procedure. An original physical model is then used to predict various diagrams of the liquidus surface of both slags. It is shown that the ternary liquidus diagrams normally used for FeOx-SiO2-CaO system are not suitable for industrial slags. The new model diagrams of Fe/CaO versus SiO2 and Fe/SiO2 versus CaO as well as Fe/CaO versus Temperature and Fe/SiO2 versus temperature are proven to be much more convenient for ferrite and ferrous calcium silicate slags. Based on these diagrams the effect of SiO2 and CaO on the melting temperature is quantified. The effect of Cu2O is also quantified through the model. Some Fe/CaO versus Cu2O and Fe/SiO2versus CaO at various copper contents are predicted and the results show good agreement with the experimental data. It is also shown that in the presence of liquid copper, Cu2O is dissolved in the slag depending on the oxidation degree of the system and might lower the liquidus temperature. Some discussions are also presented taking into account plant observations and important conclusions are drawn for copper smelting and converting
