About 1.41 kt (45.2 million oz) of gold have been ! produced in South Dakota since 1875. South Dakota's mining laws attempt to strike a balance between economic development and environmental protection. Mining is promoted as an industry while prevention of pollution is required along with reclamation of affected lands to a beneficial use. The South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources' (DENR) system of "one-stop shop- ping" for environmental permits streamlines the permit process. It fosters quick resolutions to compliance problems and helps keep enforcement actions out of the courts. Paha Sapa means "Hills that are Black" in Dakota Sioux. Appearing dark from a distance due to a thick forest of Ponderosa pine, the Black Hills were gold to many people. The exact date that gold was discovered in the Black Hills remains debatable. An inscribed stone tablet found in 1887 near Spearfish recorded these words:

Support characteristics of in-cycle trusses are analyzed using a photoelastic model loaded by tightening a truss in the sequence normally used in an underground mine. Stresses in the roof at its center point and at the junction of the roof and rib are examined. Effects of zero tension and unequal tension in the inclined anchor rods are presented. Effects of simulated subsidence on stress in the roof surface and on tension in the separate truss members are examined. Conclusions are drawn relating to (1) the effects of tension in the inclined anchor rods on uplift and compressive stress parallel to the roof surface, (2) the effects of subsidence on stress in the roof surface, and (3) the effects of subsidence on tension in the truss members.

The mining industry has recognized the importance of engineering controls as a primary means of preventing hearing loss. The noise control treatments most commonly observed on drills and bolters during this study were windshields, sound absorbing material, and hydraulic motor covers. These controls were evaluated on machines at underground metal mines to determine the amount of noise reduction achieved by each control. The results indicate that absorbing material has very little effect on the noise level. The noise reduction attributable to the motor covers was dependent on the material used to create the cover. Properly installed windshields were the most consistent control.

BRUCE CAVENDER, BHP Copper: Having worked in both places, I'd like to address the issue of the plant versus the corporate office. One thing to keep in mind is that we are all very engaged with the technical elegance of a lot of the work we do. There's some tremendous technical expertise in the plant. But remember, the guys in the corporate office are only thinking in one denomination, and that's dollars. So we'll see something like a spill, and for us it's a problem. At the end of the day, what the corporation cares about is the financial impact. So we've got to be careful to couch our solutions in dollar terms. JIM ARNOLD: Rebuttal? [laughter] DOUG HALBE: Are you going to rebut this one, Andy? ANDY CARTER, Oxidor Gold Corporation: No, I don't think so. I'm not up to it. I'd just like to address a question both to our panel and the floor. Those of us who've been in this industry any length of time have seen these same mistakes made over and over again. Wherever you go, year after year, plant after plant, you see the same problems. I guarantee you, Doug, that if we have a similar conference down the road, you're going to see the same thing. My question to the panel and to the floor is what is it about our industry that stops us from learning from our mistakes? What characteristic is it that prevents us from learning and makes us repeat the same mistakes over and over again? DOUG HALBE: That's a great question. Someone said in a meeting 10 years ago that if the people who design plants designed airplanes, the planes would be falling out of the air all the time. GARY SIMMONS, Newmont Gold Company: I've got an answer to your question as to why many plants are poorly designed. It's that the minute anybody demonstrates any sort of competence in plant design, they're promoted to a higher-paying job, and the talent pool is left with people of lesser experience. The expanding volume of maritime coal transportation is intensifying the problems concerning large vessel service, port construction, trans-shipment, and environmental control. The major problem is the shipment of coal. Customary methods for bulk transfer must be improved and new systems developed. Slurry unloading has a key role in the new systems. This report reviews progress in slurry transportation research that has been done in Japan since the 1960s, when large-scale experiments for domestic transportation were done. Experiments on the effects of vibration on the slurry cargo and on reslurrying are focused on.

The design of comminution circuits and the evaluation of alternatives should be based on state-of-the-art equipment and appropriate design criteria - considerations that are often neglected by today's designers. This paper critically reviews common circuit designs, evaluates various alternatives for difficult-to-treat ores, and discusses the factors that should be considered when developing new plant designs or auditing existing plant performance. Data obtained from laboratory, pilot and plant-scale test work on a wide range of ores and circuits are used to justify the author's conclusions.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research related to unconventional gas wells positioned in abutment pillars associated with active longwall mining in Southwestern PA. The Ventilation and Explosion Prevention Team at NIOSH is working toward predicting and characterizing a hypothetical casing breach and its effect on the safety and health of mine workers, gas well workers, and the general public. An important aspect of this research is to distinguish coalbed gas from shale gas in the mine environment as an indicator of a casing breach. Another noncoal gas source exists in the region in the form of underground gas storage fields which also have the potential to migrate towards mine workings. During a potential gas breach, the addition of excess natural gas to coal mine environments will exceed the anticipated ventilation loading and can create a mine explosion hazard. A methodology has been developed to distinguish these gas sources. Gas samples from the three sources were analyzed by gas chromatography, and interpretive methods were applied to distinguish the populations graphically and statistically. Bivariate plots using the hydrocarbon index and the normalized molecular ratios showed that the sources occupy different regions of the graphs. All samples of non-coal gas contained under 2% CO2, and all coal samples included greater than this amount. A multivariate T-squared (T2) test analysis relating comparing data in pairs showed a low p-value (dimensionality parameter) and a high T2 test statistic for all comparisons, indicating that these sources are different and distinct gas populations. Ultimately, stakeholders from the mining and gas production industries can utilize this method to identify gas sources and a potential casing breach.

Early in 1977, Amoco Production Company and Houston Chemicals, a subsidiary of Pittsburg Plate Glass (PPG) Industries, started producing iodine commercially in northwestern Oklahoma. This is significant because it is the first plant in over 40 years to be built in the United States with iodine as its sole commercial product. With the exception of a limited amount of iodine produced by Dow Chemical in Michigan, the United States is dependent upon imports from Chile and Japan for its iodine needs. The two million pounds of iodine produced annually from the Woodward plant will supply over one-third of the United States' requirements. Routine analysis of subsurface brines by the Formation Water Lab at the Amoco Production Company Research Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, revealed unusually high concentrations of certain potentially economic minerals. Investigations determined that, of the minerals in question, iodine appeared to offer the best potential. The brines in question are located in the Morrow sands (basal Pennsylvanian) at a depth of 7,175 to 7.400 feet, in an area where Amoco has been active in a gas play for the past 20 years. The regional iodine concentration ranges from 10 to 700 ppm and averages around 300 ppm with the project area. The project is located 8 miles north and slightly east of the town of Woodward, where the well-developed, porous, and permeable sands of the Woodward trench contain large volumes of brine.

The Dead Sea is the only relatively large body of surface water having bromide concentrations comparable to those in the brines of the Smackover Formation in Arkansas. The Dead Sea, like the Smackover brines, contains a great deal of calcium and is very low in sulfate and iodide. The relationships between potassium, divalent cations, and chloride indicate that over 20 percent of the bromide in the Dead Sea is derived from some source other than by the evaporation of sea water. A similar type of study of the Smackover brines in Arkansas indicates that approximately 60 percent of the bromide has been derived from some source other than sea water. Both the Dead Sea and Smackover brines are very low in iodide suggesting that the excess bromide has not been derived from organic matter. The origin of the excess bromide is probably the same for both of these brines, but the source of this bromide remains unknown.

The dissolution behavior of silver and copper form their elemental states and Ag/Cu alloys in ammoniacal solutions has been studied using rotating disc electrodes. The variables studied included concentration of ammonia, oxygen partial pressure and rotating speed of the disc. The results have been interpreted in terms of the mixed potential theory. The effect of local current resistance on the overall current has also been examined as a part of the governing theory of the dissolution. It was observed that the dissolution potential and the rate of dissolution were very much affected by the composition of the alloys.

The most famous landmark of the city of Graz (Austria) is the clock tower on the castle hill. An underground chamber was built as a multifunctional structure beneath this landmark. The required structure was designed as cavern. The overburden to the clock tower in the north side of the cavern was only 30 m. To allow access from the city to the chamber and the clock tower, a vertical shaft was built near the cavern. Rock excavation was by drill and blast method. The pilot shaft was made by the raise-boring method. Because the location of the building site was in the center of Graz, special care was taken to minimize deformations and vibrations so as to protect surrounding buildings.

An operational 9 meter (30-foot) high gold heap leach pile was investigated by excavating test pits up to 6 meters (20 feet) deep, obtaining bulk and relatively undisturbed thin wall drive samples, and observing the ore distribution patterns exposed in the test pit walls. The clayey ore is crushed, agglomerated with lime and cement, and deposited on the leach pads using a radial stacker. Laboratory tests performed included moisture-density, gradation, compaction, Atterberg limits, permeability (constant and falling head), and triaxial strength tests. Discussion is presented on the effects of agglomeration on the permeability and strength characteristics of the in-place ore. Also discussed is the effect of deposition of the ore using the radial stacker.

Platinum group metals (PGM) are often found in close association with arsenide and sulfarsenide minerals in copper-nickel bearing gabbroic rocks. Major losses of platinum in flotation have been attributed to the susceptibilities of the arsenic minerals to oxidation and subsequent losses of their recoveries in cleaner flotation stages. The use of a nitrogen atmosphere in grinding and in flotation, the effectiveness of activation for improving their floatabilities, and the role that electrochemical interactions play not only between grinding media and minerals, but also among different minerals, are discussed.

INTRODUCTION Concentration of radon 222Rn and its decay products occuring in the Polish mines of metal-ores call for the necessity of systematic radiation control /Do8la/ both of the working environment and of the miners' personal exposure. The attempts at introducing a system of radiological protection in mines, similar to the ones existing in X-ray or isotope laboratories, took several years and consisted of development of the methods for control of concentration of radon and its progeny in the air, as well as the methods for measuring individual exposure. It was accepted that the assessment of both transient concentration in the air and of personal exposure are basic elements of the control system, which should be implemented independently of each other. Concentration measurement serves to detect and to determine those areas in mines where there is intensive radon emanation, and where current control of the effectiveness of technology introduced to deacrease the concentrations is necessary; personal dosimetry results in the assessment of the actual exposure of miners to radiation. PRINCIPLES OF THE SYSTEM The assessment of working environment is based on concentration measurements of the potential radiation energy of radon alpha decay products. Decentralized assessment is carried out by the special dosimetric service operating in each mine. Dosimetrists are equipped with portable radiometers, type RGR-11, made by the institute of Nuclear Research, Warsaw. The radiometer is presented in Fig. 1. Measurement of filter activity is performed automatically according to Markov's method /Ma62/ or any other method. Simultaneously to potential energy measurement the dosimetrists are measuring the dust concentration in the air and ventilation rate. Ventilation service looks for correlation between those indices and the concentration of radon daughters in the air. Derived Air Concentration /DAC/ for concentration assessment was accepted to be 6.25 10-6 Jm-3 /0.3 WL/ according to ICRP recommendation /Publication No. 24/ /ICRP77/. If environmental measurements reveal potential energy concentration exceeding the value of 0.3 DAC at working places, the miners employed there are subject to individual control of personal exposure. Individual exposure measurement is carried out centrally by the Institute of Occupational Medicine in [Lodz] for all metal-ore mines. Various techniques used in the removal of metal ions from effluent streams have been reviewed. These techniques include recovery of metals by biological treatment, chelating agents, adsorption, ion- exchange and chemical precipitation. The main thrust of this paper however, is concerned with the removal of cadmium and zinc ions from the solution by adsorption utilizing liquid fluidized beds. The bed particles used were silica of 150x200 mesh. The range of the concentration of these ions studied was 10-3 to 10-5 M. Important variables examined included flow rate, concentration of metal ions and amount of bed particles. A mathematical model describing the concentration profile of metal ions in the axial direction in liquid fluidized beds has been developed. The equation of continuity was solved numerically and the results were used to predict the recovery of metal ions in fluidized beds.

The characteristics of mine airstreams, such as their magnitude in the time and frequency domain and their spatial distribution, as defined by isovels, must be considered when making a measurement. The possibility for erroneous measurements is greatly increased when fixed- point sensors for mine monitoring systems are used. However, an a priori understanding of the airstream characteristics can be used to reduce the possibility of erroneous readings. This paper describes the problem, presents data to illustrate the nature of the problem, and provides recommendations for alleviating the problem.

In parallel work, the cyanide/silver impregnated activated carbon system was studied for the purpose of developing an alternate cyanide removal system. It was found that free cyanide can be reduced from 20 ppm to below 10 ppb with a fixed bed of silver impregnated activated carbon, since such cyanide removal might be applicable to gold mill effluents, the investigation was extended to the cyanide/gold impregnated activated carbon (GIAC) system. Batch tests were conducted varying the gold content of activated carbon, carbon/CN ratio, stirring speed, pH of the initial solution, and the reaction temperature. The adsorption isotherm of cyanide/gold impregnated activated carbon system was also studied. The results of these batch tests show that the behaviour of the cyanide/GIAC system is very similar to the cyanide/silver impregnated activated carbon system variation of the gold content of the impregnated activated carbon has some influence on the cyanide adsorption rate. The latter is mainly increased, however, by increasing the GIAC/CN ratio. The activation energy was determined to be 3.12 kca1/mole (13.08 kj/mole) and the Au(CN)2 saturation at 194 µ M/g NORIT ROX O.B. The experimental results of reaction temperature and stirring speed show that the adsorption of free cyanide on such activated carbon is controlled by pore diffusion inside the activated carbon particle or by surface reaction. The adsorption isotherm follows the linear model and it is favourable for the cyanide/gold impregnated activated carbon system.

"In July 2012 construction started on the Grosvenor project, a five million tonne per annum underground longwall mine planned for Moranbah in Central Queensland. Grosvenor is located immediately to the south of the existing Moranbah North mine which has been in operation since 1998. EPBM technology is being used for the first time in Australia for excavation of a coal drift. The TBM was used to build two drifts on the project, one for the coal conveyor which will transport to surface, and another for people and equipment to access the underground once the mine’s operational (as shown in figure 1). The TBM will pass beneath a steel archway roof that has been installed at the drift’s entrance and begin drilling into the ground to build the seven metre diameter tunnel, descending at an angle of one in eight until it reaches the depth of the coal seam approximately 160 metres below.INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The first TBM used in a coal mine was in 1962, a Wohlmyer, in Westerholt, Germany. A further 75 km of tunnels were excavated in coalmines within Germany between 1971 to 1983. This paper will review the Grosvenor Mine project (Grosvenor) owned by Anglo American Metallurgical Coal (Met Coal) includes the construction of a new underground coal mine and surface facilities on the northern boundary of the town of Moranbah in the Central Queensland Bowen Basin coal precinct. The contract to undertake the underground development works was awarded to Redpath in 2012. The scope of the Grosvenor Project was to construct temporary office and workshop facilities, install 2 portal arches, backfill boxcuts and infrastructure, excavate by EPBM method 967 m of 1:6 gradient Conveyor Drift and 1,258 m of 1:8 gradient Transport Drift, development of 2,520 m of pit bottom area roadways and development of 10,550 m of the first longwall tailgate.
