In New Caledonia, ultramafic formations occur on 7,000 square kilometers. Weathering of peridotites leads to profiles of alteration and nickel concentrations. Complete profiles are composed of two main groups of horizons: 1. Limonitic, mainly composed of iron hydroxides 2. Saprolitic, partly composed of magnesium and iron silicates Shape and mineralogical composition of saprolitic horizons are chiefly affected by the nature of the bedrock: types of peridotite and their degrees of serpentinization. On the other hand, morphology (plateau, terraces, slopes, piedmont) is an important factor. Ore-bodies are inside saprolites; their outlines are determined by the grade of nickel and tonnage economically mineable. Information about geology, morphology, geochemistry, and mineralogy are given in this paper.

In the aftermath of the September 11th attack on the World Trade Center, groundwater control was of immediate concern. Water in?ow from the adjacent Hudson River through the compromised slurry wall ‘bathtub’ surrounding the site, ruptured water and sewer mains, and saturation from fire hoses all contributed to an already critical situation, further hampering the recovery and rehabilitation effort. An extensive pumping and deep well installation program was initiated, focused on reducing the hydrostatic loading to the severely damaged perimeter slurry wall.

Among the wide variety of modern surface chemistry analytical techniques, contact angle measurements still remain attractive for wetting characterization of solid surfaces. The captive-bubble and sessile-drop techniques are the most popular methods for the examination of flotation systems. Systematic measurements of advancing and receding contact angles for several three-phase systems using the captive-bubble and sessile-drop techniques show that the contact angle measurements depend on the technique used and may differ significantly for some heterogeneous and rough solid surfaces. Importantly, it was found that these discrepancies in contact angle measurements depend on the bubble (drop) size. Contact angles as measured with the static captive-bubble technique are compared with those measured with the dynamic captive-bubble technique, in which the capture of a bubble at the solid surface results after buoyant transport and attachment The dynamic captive-bubble technique allows for the formation of much smaller bubbles than is possible with the static placement technique in which a bubble is placed at the solid surface with a microsyringe. Although this dynamic technique cannot be recommended for the systematic wetting characterization of solid surfaces, its significant advantage is the ability to examine the contact angle/bubble size relationship over a wide range of bubble sizes, from several micrometers to several millimeters in diameter.

"Temporary mechanical ventilation is one of the fundamental requirements in guaranteeing a healthy atmosphere in underground construction works in order to protect the health of persons working on the site. It is therefore essential to conceive a system which meets the requirements of the whole of the worksite and for all phases of work which takes into account all aspects pertaining to its design, dimensioning, justification, installation, maintenance and validation. In doing so, the ventilation design and the selected apparatus to be installed shall meet with the degree of health protection and the quality of air of the worksite as defined by the legislation in force in France, through limiting the concentration of the different pollutants associated with the site activities. Consequently, when presenting a mechanical ventilation project, all of the participating parties and especially the contractor make a commitment to guarantee sufficient volumes (or airflow rates) of fresh (non-polluted and oxygenated) air and extracted (polluted) air in order to meet these limitations and maintain them in all conceivable site configurations. This article sets out the most important aspects of the implementation of a ventilation project from the initial design stage through to its application, discussing French legislation, ventilation principles, calculations and techniques with regards to underground construction sites. BASICS OF VENTILATION Mechanical ventilation studies are concerned with all of the site workstations and work phases which are sources of pollution and apply to all zones of the underground worksite with the goal of maintaining the concentration or composition of this pollution below the permitted levels and comply with the following three basic principles which are complementary to one another without being in contradiction. •,The first principle consists in eliminating or limiting as much as possible the emission of any polluting, irritant, or dangerous substances, by specifying appropriate construction techniques and equipment (use of electric motors, combustion engine equipment: filters, tanks, catalyzers, use of less polluting explosives, damping down dust with water or wetting products, damping down and diluting certain gases using water mists). •,The second principle is designed to capture residual polluting substances emitted close to the source in order to prevent them from spreading into the worksite atmosphere (extraction ventilation with ducting up to the source – upstream of the extractor fan – and use of downstream filters before expelling the polluted air to the exterior). •,The third principle involves accompanying the capture of the pollutants with additional blowing ventilation specific treatment of substances dissipated by and distant from the source of pollution (acceleration of the drift air flow in order to confine dust and better capture it, supply ventilation with ducting in order to dilute the gases emitted and discharge them to the exterior)."

In the mining and processing industry, the maintenance plan has often evolved rather than being consciously set up resulting in an overreliance on breakdown and fixed-time maintenance (planned maintenance). Historically mining and processing plant equipment has been robust and less automated than modem equipment, making it relatively easy to work on. Mining and processing plants have relied on large and expensive maintenance departments to enable rapid attention to breakdowns. Maintenance itself can result in excessive downtime and costs. This results from the requirement to take the machinery off-line to carry out (possibly unnecessary and invasive) maintenance. The danger of infant mortality after it has been put back on line again and also the cost of the maintenance action itself contributes to costs. A goal of any well-run maintenance program is to have the lowest cost while providing 100% capacity 100% of the time to operations. When maintenance investments are at a minimum, the cost of lost production is at its highest. As maintenance effort and investments are intelligently increased, the production loss gradually decreases until the lowest combined cost is achieved. This is the maintenance goal. A road map is needed to achieving maintenance excellence. This article addresses a "Road Map" to achieving maintenance excellence. The Line Creek Mine is operated by Crows Nest Resources Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell Canada Resources Limited. It is located approximately 25 km north of Sparwood in southeast British Columbia (refer to figure 1). The Line Creek coal deposit is part of the Upper Elk Coalfield in the East Kootenays. The coal is a medium volatile, low sulfur, bituminous coal and is used as a coking coal. Coal close to the outcrop is typically of low F.S.I. and is processed for thermal use. The present pits have a total coal reserve of 30 million clean tonnes and is a multi-bench, open-pit operation. The coal is recovered by front shovel and backhoe combination, and hauled to the plant with a fleet of 120-tonne and 40-tonne capacity trucks. Line Creek is unique in that it can simultaneously treat both metallurgical and thermal coal in separate processing facilities (refer to figure 2). Run-of-mine coal is delivered to the truck dump. The plus 50 mm material is scalped off and reduced to minus 50 mm in two rotary breakers. The raw coal is then conveyed to one of five, 5000-tonne capacity, silos. Typically one silo is used for thermal coal and four for metallurgical coal (refer to figure 3).

The Sunshine Mining Co. has recently started up its new silver refinery in Kellogg, ID. The new plant recovers silver anc copper values from a high grade tetrahedrite concentrate using hydro- metallurgical processes. The plant and process are both new and have gone through the initial startup phase during the first six months of 1985. The full scale plant was developed from laboratory test work. While the metallurgy of the process worked as expected, the material handling problems were difficult to over-come. As might be expected, those parts of the plant that represented available technology started up easily, while the parts that represented new technology presented the most difficulty. Topics covered in this paper include: 1) insufficient type and amount of agitation in the leach vessels, 2) discharge of a non- homogeneous slurry from the leach vessels, and 3) problems associated with very low flow rates in slurry lines.

A coal preparation plant incorporates a variety of solid-solid separation processes that operate in relatively independent parallel circuits. Studies have shown that total plant performance can be optimized by selecting circuit cutpoints that maximize total clean coal yield irrespective of the performance of individual circuits. Although the optimum cutpoints can be determined using simulation programs, these mathematical routines require detailed washability data and empirical partition information that is not often available to plant operators. In addition, routine fluctuations in the washability characteristics of the plant feed make this approach impractical to implement in industrial facilities. As an alternative, practical optimization criteria can be developed for plant operators through a fundamental understanding of scientific principles involved in coal cleaning operations. This article provides an overview of the most important optimization criteria and presents several industrial case studies that illustrate the financial benefits of this practical approach m plant optimization.

THE CIP PROCESS "IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME? After its tentative introduction to the precious metals mining industry in the earlier part of this century, the carbon in pulp (CIP) process has now come of age, and is the process of choice on all new gold mills. Well over 50 percent of all gold that is mined each year is recovered by adsorption on activated carbon, and the percentage will increase in the years ahead, when old mills using Merrill Crowe technology come to the end of their lives, and as the proportion of world gold production from low-grade resources increases. The pioneering process development work in this field, which was mainly concerned with carbon elution, was carried out by Zadra and his colleagues at the United States Bureau of Mines in the early 1950's (Zadra et al., 1950, 1952), and led to the commissioning of the first large-scale, industrial CIP plant, at the Homestake Mine in South Dakota, in 1973 (Hall et al., 1974). From there, the process spread rapidly, firstly in South Africa in the late 1970's. and then throughout the rest of the gold producing world in the 1980's. There were several factors that led to the meteoric (by gold industry standards) acceptance and successful implementation of this new technology into gold processing operations worldwide. Firstly, and perhaps most fortuitously, the development of the technology closely paralleled the 1968 release of the gold price from the rigid constraints of the $35/oz. gold standard. With the value of the metal allowed, for the first time in modern history, to fluctuate in response to free market supply and demand forces, the gold industry witnessed an unprecedented boom as the price of their commodity increased ten-fold in a remarkably short period of time. This had several important spin-offs as far as new process developments were concerned: The profits realized by established gold-mining companies increased enormously and, consequently, there was more to spend on research and development and exploration for new deposits.

Allis Mineral Systems' Grate- Kiln system can economically convert low-grade iron ore into high- grade iron-ore pellets suitable as feed material for blast furnaces for making steel. These pellets can also be fed to a direct reduction process for making sponge iron. The Grate- Car system combines the company's [ ] Grate-Kiln system for iron-ore pelletizing and Accar system for iron- ore reduction. The Grate-Car system consists of a traveling grate, a ported rotary kiln and a rotary cooler that are coupled in series. This system eliminates the pelletizing plant's rotary kiln and annular cooler. It reduces the need for some auxiliary equipment. This results in lower capital cost and lower energy consumption. The traveling grate provides that static bed handling necessary for heat hardening pellets before their discharge into the kiln. The ported kiln provides the reducing atmosphere with a more precise means of controlling the kiln axial temperature profile than conventional rotary kilns.

Gold metallurgy has advanced remarkably over the last decade. Even more significant progress will be made over the next five years, particularly in the application of advanced comminution techniques and control, preconcentration (flotation, ore sorting and coal gold agglomeration), enhancement of cyanide leaching technology, non- cyanide leaching, treatment of refractory ores and concentrates, and improved recovery systems. Carbon adsorption processes have become standard practice for ores with relatively high gold/silver ratios, but ion exchange potentially offers distinct advantages and has recently been demonstrated to perform better in at least one application. Even in the established zinc precipitation and CIP processes several important practical improvements are emerging as experience is gained at the ever increasing number of operating plants. Improved process control and reduction of reagent consumption costs are two important goals of industry at this time.

This chapter contains the edited transcript of the "Gold Heap Leach Information Exchange" session that was held at the 1990 SME/AIME Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah. The exchange occurred on the afternoon of February 27, 1990. The session was intended to act as a forum for discussing some of the more prominent operating problems associated with heap leaching precious metals. The information exchange was very successful. The exchange consisted of several panelists introducing and discussing different topics, follow by a comment and question period. This transcript contains the panelists' presentations as well as comments and questions from the floor and the panel. Extraneous comments and remarks have been edited out. This paper is the first preliminary report on the bauxites and terra rossas of the Caribbean. It concentrates on the islands of the Greater Antilles, and for reference purposes the Yucatan Penin- sula is included. At this point, observations made in Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic are compared with reported information on Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Cuba, the Cayman Islands, and the Yucatan Peninsula with regard to occurrence, as well as physical, chemical, and mineralogical composition. From this, an attempt is made at classifying the types of bauxites in the Caribbean, indicating the best reserves estimates, and the process ability of these bauxites. Some suggestions are also provided to fuel the controversy over the likely source material(s) or origin of the Caribbean bauxites.

Between 1991 and 1994, metallurgical residues from a pressure-oxidation autoclave at the Campbell Au-quartz mine at Red Lake, northern Ontario, were neutralized with dolomite-rich flotation tailings and were deposited in a polyethylene-lined disposal area. Mineralogical analysis indicates that most of the As occurs as a crystalline ferric sulfarsenate, and some is associated with Fe oxides and with K-H3O jarosite. Field pore-water geochemical data from 1994 and 1995 showed increases in Fe(II) and As(III) concentrations, suggesting that the sulfarsenate and jarosite are dissolving; none of the discrete As phases included in a thermodynamic database limit dissolved-As concentrations, and these concentrations may continue to increase. These results demonstrate the potential for Fe and As loading through groundwater systems.

We've used direct current resistivity (DC), electromagnetic (EM), induced polarization (IP), and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) geoelectrical methods to study mine dumps. The results reflect lithology, pore water saturation, and dissolved solids in the pore water. If the pore water has a pH less than 5, conductivity maps can indicate acid generating potential. IP measurements can help distinguish mineralogy in mine dumps, especially concentrations of sulfide minerals. EM and DC can help locate acidic/high TDS groundwater associated with mine dumps. GPR methods failed at the sites we studied in the West. Our own conclusions are augmented by those from the recent literature.

Coarse particle size measurement is essential for the automatic control of a size reduction process like crushing or SAG milling in order to achieve optimal process performance. However, the on-line size measurement of coarse material is not easily obtained due to the problems of material handling and sample statistics. A technique based on advanced image analysis and quantitative stereology has been successfully developed and tested in a pilot scale setting. The chord length distribution of coarse particles on a moving conveyor was measured with an image analyzer and then transformed to the mesh size distribution with a stereological model and a special numerical method. Some test results as well as the technique's industrial suitability and limitations of this method are also discussed.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the integrity of escapeways in a three entry underground coal mine. A center conveyor belt entry (secondary escapeway), was flanked by an intake (primary escapeway) and a return entry. Diesel equipment was used throughout the mine for material and personnel haulage. A carbon monoxide monitoring system, tied to a data recording computer on the surface, was deployed throughout the belt entry and at selected sites in the intake and return entries. Previously, the company had a fire of unknown origin in another mine, which prompted an interest in the performance of their escapeways. An initial, qua1itative evaluation was performed by burning approximately 14 kg of coal at the mouth of the intake entry. The first test was followed by a similar burn at the mouth of the belt entry. These initial trials showed a high quantity of leakage between entries. In several follow-up evaluations, simulated fires, using a tracer gas, were set in the intake and belt entries. Tracer gas concentrations were obtained in all entries at four different underground locations. The results of these tests showed that permanent stoppings could not guarantee isolated, contaminant-free escapeways.

The use of pneumatic methods for measuring interface level in flotation columns is analysed. It is shown that errors can vary over a wide range (e.g. 40 cm. in one industrial application) depending on bubble size, particle size, bubble loading, liquid hold-up and bulk slurry density. Accurate measurements (+ 5 cm) can be obtained by measuring intensive properties of the froth near the interface. Methods based on the measurement of temperature and conductivity are described and analysed. Control of the interface level using these measurements subject to various disturbances is demonstrated.
