It took me nearly nine months to make the move from Arizona to Berkeley, opening an office and planning our new home. While I was in Warren Dorothy had rented two rooms for my office In the new California Commercial Union Building at 315 Montgomery Street in San Francisco. She made such a good choice that this remained my address for more than 50 years Dorothy had also looked over many lots In Berkeley, and took an option on the one that pleased her the most. It was a beautiful lot, or rather three, as we took three lots to protect our view. The only possible drawback was that it was in a new district and there were only two houses within two blocks. No one could tell how the area would develop but we liked it so much that we bought the lots on the spot and signed a note to guarantee payment. Dorothy's good judgment was shown by the fact that after 50 years we are still glad to be living on the same property, at 168 Southampton Avenue. We arranged a meeting with the distinguished architect Bernard Maybeck-and employed him to design a house for us. Dorothy spent most of her time with Maybeck planning the house and an attached studio for her, and she later wrote an amusing essay on her dealings with Maybeck. They were so successful that even now we could not think of any changes we would have wanted. It took several months to design a house that suited Dorothy and would fit on our hilltop. I was glad to overcome some of Maybeck's scorn for "only an engineer" by showing how, by rotating the studio addition 45º, it would fit the lot without serious excavation. History of the feldspar industry in the United States has been summarized by DuBois (I)*. The earliest production of feldspar in the United States is reported to have been from Mitchell County, North Carolina, about 1744, with the product shipped to England, In about 1825 several pegmatites were worked to a limited extent in Connecticut, with the production shipped to England. The first feldspar grinding facility was constructed about 1850 in Connecticut, with chaser mills used. Feldspar has been produced continuously in the United States since about 1870. Feldspar is produced from the following states: North Carolina, California, Georgia, Connecticut, South Carolina, South Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma, Virginia, Arizona, and Wyoming. Total United States production for 1969 will amount to approximately 900,000 tons. The most current published figures for world production is 1966, at which time 2,165,000 tons was produced. It is estimated that world production of feldspar for 1969 will amount to 2,410,000 tons. Historically, feldspar has been produced by hand sorting and hand cobbing of coarse block feldspar obtained from the intermediate and wall zones of zoned pegmatites. In the United States the reserve of known block feldspar, recoverable by hand sorting is nearing depletion. More emphasis is now placed on feldspar sources contained in finer grained rocks, especially coarse granites or fine-grained pegmatite and beach, dune, and river sands from which the feldspar is obtained by beneficiation.

Potassium, together with nitrogen and phosphorous, is one of the essential nutrients required for growth. All living things need potash and so the major demand for potash (approximately 95% of, total demand) is as a fertilizer. Traditional agricultural techniques relied on the return of organic materials to the soil to provide nutrient requirements and maintain soil fertility, and the prevailing low crop yields required little in the way of added fertilizers. But agricultural productivity has increased dramatically in recent times, and this increase in crop yields requires substantial amounts of added nutrients to keep the soil fertile. It follows that there will always be a demand for potash. There is no substitute. Other fertilizers that contain N and P are complementary and not competing products.

Vegetative stabilization can help meet the esthetic objections and pollution problems posed by mine wastes. However, mine wastes are often unfavorable growth media and special treatments and techniques are needed for plant establishment and continued growth. The establishment of vegetation on mine wastes was the subject of many papers presented at the International Symposium on Ecology and Revegetation of Drastically Disturbed Areas held at Pennsylvania State University on August 3-16, 1969. This paper is a summary of those papers presented at the symposium that dealt with the nutritional and physical aspects of plant establishment on a variety of mine wastes. The synopsis presented is a combination of excerpts from the abstracts, notes on the oral presentations, and rough drafts of some of the papers. The papers will eventually be published in the symposium proceedings.

This is the case history of how two nearby plants in Southwest Virginia solved their water clarification problems. While the solutions should not be considered applicable industry-wide, the methods used in arriving at the answers deserve consideration. When Clinchfield's Moss No. 2 Preparation Plant, the first ever built in Tiller Seam coal, was started in the fall of 1956, the clays in the raw coal soon posed a flocculation problem, Laboratory sedimentation tests were initiated; and as a result, lime was adopted as the flocculant for the clays, With lime, a pH of 11.2 was required. As the plant tonnage increased, it became evident that the amount of coal fines produced in the mining and preparation was greater than had been estimated and that the 90-foot thickener was inadequate in providing sufficient settling time to effect a clarified overflow for reuse. Testing showed that Separan 26105 (NP10)1/, when used with lime, was the most satisfactory coal flocculant available,

The marketability of a large volume bulk material is significantly effected by transportation costs. Hence, it is essential for anyone that deals with minerals or mineral wastes to be able to reliably estimate bulk transport costs. The three types of bulk overland transportation modes that will be discussed are truck, railroad, and pipeline. Contract and private carriage are the two types of truck transport generally suitable for movement of bulk commodities. Contract carriers are those transportation firms that service a limited number of shippers and geographic points, and carry a restricted number of commodities. Private carriage consists of control over drivers and equipment by the shipper, ownership or lease of the transport equipment, and shipment of commodities related to the primary business of the shipper.1 A combination of private and contract carriage may also be used. Depending on the size and regularity of the shipment, rail offers single car, multiple car, or unit train service to move bulk minerals. Both long and short distance pipeline transportation has been shown economically and technically feasible for many different solids such as, mine and quarry products, coal, chemicals, copper concentrates, phosphate rock, and sewage sludge. 2

The possibility that a hypothesis explains almost all observed facts may be satisfying. Yet the almost gives a distinct sense of uncertainty. Moreover, overlooking the almost, reliance on the favored hypothesis may close our eyes to the discovery of new information and, in the field of mineral exploration, to the possibilities of finding new and hidden ores. A case in point is that of mines such as the Elizabeth and Ely, along the copper belt in eastern Vermont, principally in Orange County. The geology of the Strafford Quadrangle, where the Elizabeth Mine is located, has been described by Doll (1944). Two informative papers (McKinstry and Mikkola, 1954, Howard, 1959) present much valuable information about the geology of the Elizabeth Mine. Both reach the conclusion that the ores were emplaced after the peak of metamorphism, through the agency of metal-bearing hydrothermal solutions. Both, therefore, conclude that the source of the ores was somewhere below the outcrop area, presumably in some hidden intrusive mass. Neither yields a satisfactory guide for further exploration. Howard (1959) cites geophysical observations which show that there is a mass with a density similar to that of granite under the Strafford dome, adjacent to the Elizabeth Mine on the West. Yet examination of gneissic granite in the Chester dome, 25 miles to the South gives no suggestion of a young, near-surface intrusive capable of carrying or mobilizing large quantities of sulfur and metals. The seismic vulnerability of the existing outlet tower at Lake Mathews reservoir, located in Riverside County, California, necessitated the design of a new outlet facility to assure serviceability of the facility following a major earthquake. The components of the proposed facility include: a new outlet tower; a shaft; a new outlet tunnel; an approach channel that will be excavated underwater; and two short tunnels that will connect the new outlet tunnel to the existing outlet tunnel via the shaft. As the new facilities will be constructed while the reservoir is in operation, a cofferdam will be constructed around the site of the new outlet tower. The design for the underground facilities used a combination of empirical methods; limit equilibrium analyses, including displacement-based pseudo-static analyses for dynamic loading conditions; and numerical analyses. This paper outlines the design methodology used to develop an innovative design for the facilities which can be constructed within the time frame required by the operational schedule of the reservoir and existing outlet facility.

Sizing devices used commercially are unfortunately not 100% efficient, the splits that can be obtained are usually inferior to the results obtained in the laboratory. Often the capital and operating costs of equipment capable of high sizing efficiency cannot be justified by the economics or requirements of the process. To reconcile the desired sizing efficiency needed to obtain optimum process requirements with the sizing efficiency of equipment economically practical, it is often necessary or desirable to predict the gradation and weight splits of the products obtained based on the expectant efficiency of the contemplated sizing device or method. The less efficient the sizing device one must employ, the more important it is to know the results that may be expected for the establishment of the optimum flow sheet and the more difficult it becomes to estimate the results accurately. Air classification equipment which sizes materials by opposing the drag force created by an air stream acting on a particle with a combination of gravitational, inertial or centrifugal forces are substantially less efficient than, for example, a laboratory sieve analysis. Air classifiers allow oversize material to contaminate the fine fraction and leave undersize material in the coarse fraction. The techniques employed to predict the gradation and weight splits obtained from air classification outlined below are adaptable to other sizing devices less than 100% efficient such as screens, sifters and wet classifiers.

One of the major problems for us in the earthmoving industry is the analysis of materials under the ground surface. Countless engineering and construction jobs would be simplified if there were an inexpensive and fast way to obtain information on problems such as: Depth and solidith of bedrock? Nature of the materials between bedrock and the surface? Adequate foundation for bridges and drainage structures? Location of supplies of materials to be used in construction? Investigation of tunnel sites? Characteristics of swampy areas and investigation of existing and potential slide areas? These questions are of paramount interest to highway contractors as they bid jobs and plan, equipment spreads to handle them at optimum efficiency. Such information also is invaluable to engineers in the design and construction of bridges, buildings, railroads, canals, and tunnels.

Asamera Minerals Cannan Mine has been producing a 170 g gold/tonne (5 oz gold/ton) siliciaus flotation concentrate since July 1985. Flotation concentrate is shipped to a smelter for gold recovery. Numerous processes have been investigated to economically produce bullion on site. This paper describes the laboratory and pilot plant test results of a bacterial assisted oxidation of the refractory minerals. Economic comparisons with autoclaving and roasting processes are included.

The 9th Line / 16th Ave tunnels are part of a $700 million expansion of the York Durham Sewage System, north of Toronto. The 15 km of tunnels presented many challenges, including glacial and postglacial deposits, at depths up to 55 m. Due to high hydrostatic heads, the Owner specified EPB tunnelling, however, an alternate was proposed utilising rib and lagging tunnels, combined with a de-watering scheme. State of the art technology was utilised with a new Lovat TBM, incorporating PLC control, soft start water-cooled motors and a head designed to tackle the mixed ground expected. The 9th Line tunnels were completed in 2002. Subsequently the second section of tunnel along 16th Avenue has been awarded to the Joint Venture. This paper presents a case history of the soft ground tunnelling, including design elements, tunnel systems and TBM operations.

Gentlemen, the title of my paper is Surface Mining An Interim Land Use. Surface mining has become one of the major controversies of our time. This has happened in spite of the fact that all surface mining to date has involved only 6 million acres out of a total of 2300 million or approximately one-fourth of one percent of the total land area in the United States. I'm not going to dwell on whether peoples' perspectives are out of focus in light of the area involved, the energy crisis, national security, or the international balance of payments problem. While these things are all critically important, it is not the function of this paper to relate to them. Maybe the amount of attention attracted to surface mining is out of proportion to a lot of other things, but I don't feel that we should use that as a basis for procrastination. However, let me categorically state that anything that affects the surface of the earth is a form of land use --- be it an interstate highway, a power plant site, a golf course, a corn field, a strip mine, or the plot of ground on which your house is located.

Most large coal mines are opting to use track haulage over other support transportation systems because of cost, ease of installation, reliability, and other factors. En¬gineers tackling the problem of designing such a transportation network must be aware of all the steps required for an effective transportation system design. This chapter discusses all aspects of efficient trackwork construction. The areas covered in¬clude design factors, laying the track, installing turnouts and switches, and installing trolley wire. Each area includes a description of the steps needed to complete the work.

The method of powering mills such as AG, SAG and Ball has a long and technically interesting history. It can be said that almost every decade in the last half century had its own trend. The trends were dominated by the market demand, the advanced process development and requirement of the mechanical and the electrical technology but mostly by the price of the applied technology. The increasing size of the ring geared mills in the last years requires more awareness on the drive train solution. Special attention must be paid to the mechanics and the requirements of the power grid. Operational challenges such as soft starting and controlled operation as well as the protection of the equipment have gained importance. Frequency converter drive solutions dedicated to single or dual pinion ring-geared mills offer significant advantages over conventional drives due to their application specific features and controls. Solutions with low speed motors as well as high speed motors cover all possible configurations available for ring geared mills.

The effectiveness of pre-reinforcement as an immediate stabilization measure as well as its contribution to the permanent stabilization of a tunnel were studied through the use of physical (Figure 1) and numerical models (1). Physical models were designed for the investigation of two pre-reinforcement systems: first, reinforcing far ahead of the main excavation (Figure 2); second, spiling reinforcement ahead of the face (Figure 3). In both cases, the use of reinforcement was responsible for permanently stabilizing an otherwise unstable opening. Data from the physical models were used to calibrate a numerical model from which additional information on long term behavior, methods to account for the capacity of a pre-reinforcement system, and the mechanisms involved were ascertained. These studies indicated that pre-reinforcement can stabilize a rock mass effectively as it reduces deformations and thereby deterioration due to strain softening, provides rock mass confinement leading to increased available strength, and maintains rock arch continuity allowing for increased tangential stress in the immediate vicinity of the opening. Field studies verified the capacity of spiling reinforcement to restrain initial deformations.

This report and accompanying engineering geologic map describe the generalized engineering geology of St. Louis County, Missouri for use in determining the most efficient, economical, and environmentally sound program for land development and urban growth. It includes an evaluation of such factors as the physical and engineering properties of soil and bedrock, surface stability, and subsurface geologic structure. The map and text are designed primarily for property owners, engineers, architects, real estate developers, and city planners involved in land-use planning. The geologic information and engineering interpretation must be considered as a general guide and not as a substitute for a complete on site investigation prior to initiation of any land-use project. The map scale, 1:63,360 (1 inch to a mile) is too small to include the detailed information normally provided on the 7 1/2-minute quadrangle series (1:24,000). The smaller scale is most useful at regional planning levels and was chosen to present information on the more significant engineering factors of the geologic environment for county-wide planning and development. A conventional geologic map deals primarily with the distribution and variation of bedrock formations, and a pedologic map presents information on the soil or natural medium for plant growth. Basic geologic maps and pedological maps are valuable tools that can be of assistance in studying the geologic environment, however, these maps do not provide all the information required for land-use planning. The engineering geologic maps are designed to provide this data. The engineering geologic map is related to both of these basic maps but emphasizes the engineering properties of the rock formations and soils rather than their age or origin. Some of the unit boundaries shown on the county map will closely follow some geologic formation and/or pedologic boundaries; others will transgress these conventional boundaries. Earth materials, bedrock and soil, that have similar engineering characteristics have been mapped as one unit without regard to their geologic or pedologic classifications. This is to assure that geological factors are recognized, adequately interpreted, and presented for use in engineering practice.

A native sulfur mineralization associated with pyrite and iron oxides containing 20% iron was quarried in Calimani Mountains, Oriental Carpathians. The wastes resulted from this exploitation activity, with a volume of 33 millions m3, were stored in four dumps while the wastes resulted from ore processing using flotation and the subsequent treatment were disposed of in a settlement pond. The investigations carried out in the entire mining area focused on the following two aspects: - the impact of environmental factors mainly on the hydrographic network; - the characterization all pollution sources, namely dumps, leachates and the quarry and the assessment of acidic drainage generation. The total sulfur content of the excavated ore was 3.8% while in dumps it ranged between 0.54 and 1.06%. Analysis of samples collected along the hydrographic network, draining the mining area, resulted in pH values ranging between 1.7 and 2.83 as well as high concentration of iron (4525 mg/L to 1.6 mg/L), copper (1.87 mg/L to 0.04 mg/L) and zinc (13.13 mg/L to 0.3 mg/L). Samples from the quarry, the dumps and the tailings pond were analyzed in order to deter-mine: - the maximum potential acidity (MPA); - the acid neutralization capacity (ANC); - the net acid production potential (NAPP).
