This study was undertaken as a part of developing treatment alternatives for waste materials, primarily waste rock and roaster tailings, from sites contaminated with mercury (Hg) mining wastes. Leaching profiles of waste rock over a range of different pH and oxidation-reduction (Eh) conditions were performed. Since iron (Fe) is present in large quantities in mining wastes, the effect of Fe on leaching of Hg was also determined. Results show that the Hg concentration increased as the pH of the suspension increased until a pH value of 10.65. Thereafter, the Hg concentration decreased sharply. The Hg concentration, in presence of Fe decreased significantly (1/10thto 1/100th). Kinetics results show a relatively slow rate of leaching in presence of ferric ions. The results obtained from the present study are being used to predict the fate and stability of Hg present in the environment, and will therefore, be useful in dictating the nature and suitability of any remediation treatment.

There are large areas on all of the continents with environments which are favorable for deposits of zinc and lead of Mississippi Valley type. In the developed countries, these environments have for the most part been quite thoroughly explored for the near surface deposits, and it will be necessary to direct more effort to the search for deeper buried deposits from which much of our future production must come. The difficulties of exploration for deep ore of this type are many and formidable, but the area of permissive environments beneath deep cover is many times as great as the area of the known near surface ore districts. It is a reasonable assumption, therefore, that numerous deposits wait for discovery and development. The finding cost, however, is certain to increase, and it is essential that concepts and techniques of exploration be improved if we are to sustain a reasonably strong productive capability into the 21st century. Exploration for deeply buried deposits requires at the outset relatively large areas of favorable geologic environment. The favorable horizons must be within economic limits of depth for the exploration as well as for the mining techniques which are currently available; and there must be some condition, design or strategy which will assure the explorer a reasonable chance of obtaining maximum benefit from discoveries which he may make.

The deformation, failure, and filling characteristics of a caving roof in the initial and normal mining stages of a pitching oblique longwall mining area are analyzed using large-scale threedimensional physical-similitude experiments and numerical calculations to study the characteristics of roof fracture and migration in a steeply dipping seam. The results show that the roof fracture development has evident sequential and spatial characteristics. Among them, immediate roof breaking in different parts of the mining area shows difference in time and space. The failure sequence of the immediate roof in different areas changes with the mining; unique regional stability evolution characteristics are observed in the suspended immediate roof simultaneously, resulting in its significant regional stability on the goaf filling.

A test of a solvent extraction (SX) pilot plant featuring electrostatic coalescence has been performed by C-E Natco at the United Nuclear uranium mill in Church Rock, New Mexico. Operating in parallel with the United Nuclear SX system, the C-E Natco electrostatic SX pilot plant exhibited comparable extraction efficiency to the United Nuclear system which utilizes conventional mixer-settlers. The C-E Natco pilot, however, operated at much higher liquid loading rates and exhibited less communication between the aqueous phases of the extraction and stripping circuits.

Weighting materials as we know them today were first recognized in 1922 by B. K. Stroud1. Stroud, who was supervisor or the Mineral Division of the Louisiana Department of Conservation, tested galena, cement and hematite as weighting materials and successfully used hematite to make a "heavy mud". The first use of barite was in the fall of 19222 . The process of adding heavy minerals in mud was patented in 1926 by Stroud and National Pigments and Chemical Company, a subsidiary of National Lead Company now NL Industries, Inc. The ground barite was marketed as BAROIDR barite.

For new coal-fired power plants, federal regulations require that emissions of sulfur dioxide be limited to 1.2 pounds for every million BTU'S burned. This is equivalent to coal with a sulfur content of roughly 0.7 percent for Eastern bituminous coals and roughly 0.6 percent for Western sub-bituminous coals. The states and their political subdivisions are free to apply more stringent standards and to develop implementation plans covering existing and new units. Most Western-sub-bituminous coals contain less than 1% sulfur and hence their use, in many cases, will allow a utility to meet the regulations. However, there are problems in using such coals in furnaces designed for Eastern bituminous coals, and furthermore it will take many years to open mines and provide transportation facilities to utilities which are now burning coals with a higher sulfur content. Moreover, pending federal legislation would outlaw strip mining on land to which the federal government owns the mining rights. Those utilities who, for one reason or another, intend to continue burning Eastern bituminous coals with sulfur contents in excess of 1 percent are faced with removing SO2 from the stack gases. The alternative of utilizing coal gasification where the sulfur is removed prior to burning in a power plant is still in the early stages of development. Therefore, a large number of processes are under development for SO2 control.

The subject of strata control in mining can be approached from both static or loading concepts or from dynamic or impulsive loading concepts. The fracture process itself appears to be primarily a dynamic process as is the gross creation of fractures through the use of impact, stress wave passage or in more general terms, the use of explosives. This paper presents experimental results which indicate that the understanding of the fracture behavior of rock that has been, established in the open literature is not always appropriate. In particular, the results of this experimental program have shown very interesting differences between the formation of fractures in rock and the formation of fractures in other materials such as metals and plastics which are often used as models for rock behavior studies Fracture patterns and causes of dynamic fracturing in various rock and artificial materials are presented.

The United States is faced with increasing demands for electricity, coupled with continuing demands for crude oil and gas. Superimposed on these' national requirements are our national requirements for clean air and elimination of thermal pollution of our rivers. From the coal viewpoint, this situation is complicated still more by the rapid advances in nuclear power. In this paper, I hope to show a way to use our Western coals as a solution to this involved national problem by producing: 1. High quality crude 2. Low cost power 3. Economic byproducts We could expect these products to be made at one site in an integrated plant that would mine (extract) coal, process it, and convert it to electricity. Perhaps the most important attribute of the plant is its reduced water requirement and the elimination of air pollution from the power cycle. Quite logically, such a plant would probably recover valuable byproducts, such as pipeline gas, sulphur, cement, aluminum, and the like. Although the plant projected in this paper is a conceptual one, it is based on work now underway by Government and industry. Prediction of the future is a most hazardous occupation, but plants such as the one projected are based on current knowledge and can be expected to reach commercial operation in the near term future.

Electricity, as normally thought of by a layman's definition, is a man- made force that has no color, no odor, is not visible, cannot be heard, yet man can control it and make it perform his work for him. A person dare not cheat on it, for it then will master him. It has laws, rules, and regulations that must be strictly adhered to if it is to perform in the safest, most reliable, and economical manner. In the early days of coal mining the power source was man himself. Later man employed steam and compressed air to reduce his muscle power requirements needed in the extraction of coal. By the turn of the 20th century, electricity had become the most common source of power for the coal industry. Steam and compressed air are still found in use in isolated cases today for specific applications; however, they are rapidly being replaced by electricity. Electrical laws and regulations are quite extensive and somewhat complex for the proper generation and use of electricity. Man-made laws, rules, and regulations for the care and handling of electricity, designed for man's safety, are rigidly enforced by Mine Safety and Health Ad- ministration (MSHA), as well as the various state departments of mines.

So that you will not have been misled entirely we will devote our considerations to a far more important art and if I may, I should like to begin by quoting Vincent Van Gogh. According to a literal translation the artist in describing one of his famous paintings said "these peasants are eating their potatoes with those very hands that dug them from the earth' and put them in the dish". Vincent Van Gogh may not have realized at that time, that he could likewise have been describing what is probably one of the oldest of all arts - the art of Material Handling - an art that man with the aid of science has tried to improve since the beginning of time.

Economical and environmental pressures necessitates the recovery of the minus 0.6 mm x 0 coal generated by todays mining machines. This size fraction, dependent on the type of production unit, maintenance of the production unit, and the Hardgrove Grindability Index, can be a substantial portion of the Preparation Plant feed. Historically, dewatering of the collected 0.6 mm x 0 product has often been rather expensive and marginal with respect to surface moisture reduction. The Freeman United Crown II Preparation Plant more than adequately demonstrates that the continuous scroll type centrifuge can dewater 0.6 mm x 0 coal to acceptable surface moisture levels.

In Japan all the complex sulfide ore deposits of base metals have been developed as underground mining. The underground mining cost is extremely high as compared with open pit mining case. Therefore, in milling section of base metal mines, technical advance for maximum recoveries of valuable constitutents in ore has been required all the time to utilize as much ore mined as possible. At present, in mill plants treating "Kuroko", complex sulfide ore, concentrates of copper, lead, zinc, pyrite and barite are produced, with gold and silver contents in the copper, lead, and zinc concentrates being estimated as extra profit. As in the case of Kuroko milling plants, gold and silver contents in the lead and zinc concentrates of lead-zinc ore milling plants are also varuable from an economical viewpoint. Silver content is very high in Kuroko crude ore as well as lead-zinc ore.

The equipment used to accomplish the desired unit operation is de¬scribed. Comparative data are presented to illustrate performance characteristics of unit operations, process, and equipment. The economic efficiency of individual processes is outlined. Some of the chapters contain material that is covered in detail in other sections of the Handbook Such chapters are developed only sufficiently to indicate the specific application of the techniques to hydrometallurgical processes. In this section considerable cross-referencing to the other related sections has been done.

Slope stability analysis plays an integral role in the design of various mining applications including waste dumps, heap leach piles, solution ponds, and tailings dams. Generally, limit equilibrium analysis using one of the several prevalent approaches is considered adequate. The density, saturation, and shear strength parameters of the materials forming the slope affect the failure mode and the calculated factor of safety (FS) against sliding. These parameters are generally based on laboratory tests. Field practices and construction procedures are often not completely simulated in the laboratory for various reasons (e.g. equipment limits, time and budget restraints, etc.). This paper presents a holistic assessment of slope stability analysis as practiced in mining applications, using example data from multiple heap leach projects. A sensitivity analysis is presented for variations in material properties, data interpretation, and computation methods. For each step in the design process, the possible variations in parameter values were identified and then used to perform traditional and probabilistic stability analyses. This simple, cradle-to-grave-type approach is used to evaluate the reliability of an example design, and the combined impact of multiple uncertainties on the factor of safety. Example Study The issue of addressing uncertainty in geotechnical design has been discussed in depth by numerous authors (Duncan 2000; Christian 2004; Whitman 1984; Christian et al. 1993). One may ignore the uncertainties involved in a design, take a conservative approach, rely on observational methods (Peck 1969), or attempt to quantify the uncertainty. Geotechnical projects in general, may include a combination of these methods. For important structures, such as heap leach pads, it is critical that sources of uncertainty in the stability analysis be acknowledged early on and considered in the overall design approach. As with any project, economics and other physical constraints, such as space limitation, often do not always allow for an overly-conservative, robust design. In an effort to quantify uncertainty and provide a sense of level of confidence in the safety and reliability of a design, probabilistic methods have been developed and implemented in many slope stability software packages. Reliability methods are often used in the design of open pit mine slopes, but not as commonly in designing heap leach pads and waste dumps. As an example, the stability analysis of a copper heap leach project is presented here to evaluate the effects of multiple sources of uncertainty and differing methods of data interpretation. Some of the parametric values, or the variation therein, are assumed on the basis of actual data from multiple heap leach projects, included in the paper as well. A generic representation of the example case study is shown in Figure 1. As depicted in the cross-section, the ultimate height of the design is 114 m (measured from the crest to the toe). The overall slope of the heap leach pad is 1.88 horizontal to 1 vertical (1.88H:1V), or 28°. The slope benches are considered in the overall slope. The example leach pad is founded on alluvial, colluvial and residual soils overlying weathered limestone. The ore to be placed on the pad is characterized as poorly graded gravel (GP) with average fines content (percent passing #200 sieve) of 4%. The liner subgrade is low permeability (fine) soil. The cover or the drainage material, placed directly above the geomembrane (between the liner and the ore), is crushed ore in this case. The phreatic surface was assumed to be 1 m above the base liner, which is what the collection system over the liner is typically designed for. [ ] In heap leach pads, typically, Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) or High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is used as the base liner. The decision is based on the elongation, strength and other requirements of the application as well as economic considerations. In this example study, the base liner was 80-mil single-side textured LLDPE. FIELD INVETIGATION AND SAMPLING When selecting appropriate values for the input parameters of the stability analysis, the level of uncertainty in the data and the assumptions that are made must be clearly identified and considered in the design. This concept has been emphasized through an extensive number of publications regarding geotechnical uncertainty and reliability (Christian et al. 1994; Duncan 2000; Christian 2004). The primary source of uncertainties involved in slope stability analysis for mining applications is inadequate geotechnical investigation, often lacking in a thorough assessment of in-situ material characterization and sampling disturbances. To emphasize this point, some background information is presented here. The tradeoff between the costs of a thorough site investigation versus the risks of design uncertainty has long been a challenging management decision in geotechnical projects. For mine sites, significant investment is typically made in exploration and estimating mineral resources and the geology of a mine site is often more thoroughly documented than other types of geotechnical projects. Nevertheless, the engineering properties of the soil and rocks relevant to slope stability receive less emphasis. Baecher and Christian (2003) observed that the areas of geotechnical concern, such as slopes and waste disposal facilities, are usually associated with mine costs rather than revenue, and therefore, significantly less money is devoted to their site characterization and laboratory testing. The work of engineers responsible for the design and performance of mine facilities is often challenged by economic and practical constraints in the field. Problems have developed in implementing design criteria dictated by persons or agencies not familiar with the dynamic nature of mine engineering. Regional and site-specific conditions frequently require changes to standard designs, or the use of a completely innovative approach, which is not provided for in the regulations. The implementation of engineering design, therefore, usually requires a hard-sell approach to management and regulatory agencies that allows for a happy-medium to all parties concerned. Flexibility on the part of the regulatory agencies is needed to solve operational and environmental problems with sound engineering. Typical hydrologic issues which will be discussed fall in the following general categories: ? Design criteria for sizing water control structures (i.e., culverts, diversion and sedimentation ponds, ditches, etc.) ? Implementation (construction and operation) difficulties ? Regulatory compliance ? Reclamation planning with hydrologic considerations ? Protection of groundwater resources

This paper deals with the daily work of operating geologists and should be of interest to recent graduates. Working with development and production is quite different from exploration and many of the required skills and techniques must be learned on the job. Try to obtain your first position at a mine where good geological work is being done because it is important that you establish a solid foundation by learning valid techniques. Many do not! Those who desire to work in exploration are well advised to spend the initial two or three years at an operating mine where they will deal daily with an orebody during development and mining. Attempt to understand the controls of ore deposition and be interested in all phases of the operation. Learn something about factors which can adversely affect profitability and you will be a better explorationist.
