The presence of calcium ion in iron ore pulps causes heterocoagulation of montmrillonite on hematite leading to indiscriminate dispersion. Two methods were investigated to control the adverse effect of montmorillonite: chemical method using such complexing agents as EDTA and sodium tripolyphosphate, and mechanical method involving ultrasonic treatment. Their roles in controlling the adverse effect were investigated by zeta potential measurements, starch adsorption tests, and flocculation and selective flocculation tests.

The demand for mineral raw materials, especially in the major industrialized nations, has grown rapidly during the past three decades. One consequence of this growth has been an increasing reliance by the large industrialized countries upon nondomestic mineral supplies. These mineral supplies, to a large extent, have been developed by capital from the major industrialized countries. Until recently, most foreign mining ventures were either wholly-owned subsidiaries or joint ventures between two or more mining companies. The recent rise of economic nationalism has substantially changed the business climate and parameters under which foreign investors operate. This paper describes some of the underlying reasons for this change and notes how investors have adapted to the new business conditions.

Although other methods of mineral concentration have been developed over the years, gravity separation remains one of the most efficient and economical for cleaning coal. The concentrating table and the spiral separator are popular devices used for the separation of minerals by exploiting the differences in specific gravities of the product material and the gangue. While the former device has been servicing the coal industry for over 75 years, the latter seems to have not been employed extensively for coal cleaning purposes in this country. As far as coal preparation is concerned, both separatory devices seem to be most efficient for intermediate to fine size fractions. As it stands there exists a great deal of confusion amongst preparation engineers and plant managers as to whether spirals can have a place in the coal industry. If so, whether their come back is the beginning of the end for concentrating tables, or can they be employed along with concentrating tables to contribute toward more efficient cleaning processes resulting in an improvement in the overall economics of the coal preparation industry. This paper examines the efficiency of both systems for coal processing operations as well as the basic principles, operational variables, economics, advantages and disadvantages associated with each unit operation. Attempts have been made to draw conclusions and make recommendations as to which system would be more beneficial for coals of known characteristics.

The stability problems of back- filled spoil banks became more important since the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 was enacted. The material properties of spoil banks were categorized as the first part of the study and spoil slope stability was evaluated using computer programs as a second part. Emphasis was placed on the effects of natural barriers, which is required in the federal law.

The requirements for controlling air and stream pollution are a most timely subject for all concerned people. The coal industry has taken great measures to reduce both types of pollution. Through the use of more efficient scrubbing equipment on their thermal dryers, pollution has been considerably reduced. In many cases, the complete elimination of thermal drying by using centrifugal dryers to dewater fine coal products and meet customer specifications has completely eliminated air pollution from this source. To help eliminate stream pollution and the hazards created by tailing ponds, the coal industry is using centrifugal dewatering equipment. Use of centrifugals to dewater fine refuse for disposal would eliminate refuse ponds or extend their life. In doing this effectively and economically, preparation plants have the option of recycling the clarified water to close the water circuit or of discharging the water into receiving streams with the assurance that it contains an acceptable amount of refuse solids.

This paper discusses some of the problems involved in predicting the productivity of a shovel and truck fleet in a new set of operating conditions. More specifically, it concentrates on the problems of predicting the travel times on the haul and return portions of the truck cycle under new profile conditions and the prediction of the interaction effect between the shovel and trucks at the loading point. The ability to calculate the travel times for a new road profile is not new. Additional corrections of these calculated times for expected actual operation can be made. In considering the interaction between the loader and the hauler, there are two approaches that can be taken. Probably the most accurate method of predicting the shovel-truck interaction is a simulation of the step-by-step operation considering the variation in cycle times of the shovel and trucks. This is usually called a stochastic simulation and requires input describing how these cycle times vary. However, by understanding the causes of this shovel-truck interaction it is possible to make sufficiently accurate predictions with much simpler methods. For the purpose of this discussion let us assume that the problem involves trying to predict the productivity of a single shovel-truck fleet at some future time in an existing operation. Let us also assume for simplification that the new operation to be simulated has the same loading and pit conditions and the same dumping conditions as did the existing operation. Therefore, the only difference would be the difference in the hauling profile for the new operation. The problem then becomes one of predicting the change in the travel times on the haul and return portions of the cycle, and in determining the change in interaction between the shovel and trucks with the new truck cycle times.

Less than optimum production in mining always results when poorly blasted material is provided at loading points. More often than not the cause is due to blasting founds that fail to fully control and utilize explosive energy. In many cases the problem exists because too few blasters understand how blastholes actually break rock and recognize that blasting is a three-dimensional process in designing their blasts. To better understand how blasts can be more effectively designed the two major rock breakage processes are described. In addition, the respective contributions of the borehole and detonation pressures are defined as are the specific roles of the several important blasting design variables. The concept of stiffness as an engineering principle and its significance in blasting design is introduced for explaining the breakup of rock. Basic guidelines for affecting control over fragmentation and side effects like over-break are offered.

One of the most critical skills developed by underground coal miners is the ability to interpret natural warning signals in terms of impending roof failure. A miner receives a variety of signals which can be called warning and which can be classed broadly by sense: aural, visual, and tactile. This paper concentrates on those signals which are airborne and audible. These signals are creaks, cracks, pops, groans, snaps, booms, tears, rips, and other assorted pulses which emanate from the roof strata, coal pillars, and artificial support in response to the stresses induced by the mine opening. These pulses are sometimes referred to as "talk". Although it is clear that miners rely on roof talk to assess the roof's stability, it is not clear of what roof talk is composed. It has been described in a variety of figurative ways, but has not been scientifically characterized. As will be shown shortly, the purpose of this research is very specific. The ramifications, however, are very broad, and are, indeed, still being followed.

Although the basic techniques employed in hydraulic pumping in open pit mining have been practiced throughout the better part of this century, only relatively recently have studies of' sufficient depth and scope been conducted to improve these techniques. This paper will point out the basic techniques involved and some of the more recently discovered data concerning hydraulic pumping, Inherent in all hydraulic transportation systems apart from the consideration of transportation cast, is the outstanding advantage of slurrying the matrix at the mining pit so as to provide a lengthy and thorough soaking and washing of the material while in the pipe line and thereby reduce the necessity for washing, scrubbing and other treatment in the beneficiation plant. This is quite important in view of the constant increase in demand for a cleaner product.

The genesis of a hydrothermal subsea mound, by chimney debris heaping and mineralizing fluid circulating upward, induces a vertical maturation gradient. Connected porosity is easy to measure and, after mineralogical evidence, can be use as a maturation index. Thus, to understand how a rock property evaluates with maturation, it is possible to plot it against connected porosity. Results are that uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, and in a lesser certitude tensile strength, abrasivity and hardness, increase very weakly with maturation until a maturation threshold (equivalent to a connected porosity equal to 0.2), and rocket to much higher values after it.

This paper presents a new algorithm for solving the Controlled Flow Mine Ventilation Problem in an optimal manner - minimum power consumption. The use of booster fans and restrictions on the locations of ventilation regulators are dealt with in a straightforward manner. This new approach is based on a common Operations Research algorithm for which there are many fast computer programs available.

In Europe, novel low-cost excavator-mounted Multi Tool Miner (MTM) systems, consisting of cutter head, hammer, bucket and drill attachments permit one unit to perform multiple tasks replacing several purpose-built machines. At the Weser Tunnel in Germany, cross-passages between the twin tubes were excavated in frozen ground with a remote-controlled mini-excavator equipped with a quick-change cutter head, ripper tooth and bucket. In Switzerland at the N2 interstate near Basel, W. Dietrich AG enlarged a 2-lane tunnel to three lanes with a cutter head mounted on a special excavator. Blasting and heavy hammers were not permitted due to the closeness of the “live” twin tube. At the N20 Zurich bypass, the Joint Venture of Jaeger, Frutingerand AHB excavates highway tunnels, some with extremely large cross sections, conventionally. A cutter head mounted on an excavator removes the rock shattered by blasting precisely to the pay line, thus preserving the rock’s self-supporting capacity preventing subsidence and damages to water resources and buildings on the surface under low overburden.

Early mining at Manhattan demonstrated that blasthole assays alone were insufficient to control the disposition of material. A program was began using controlled blasting, intense sampling and panning of crushed samples, fire assay checks, and geologic inspections to sort material in the pits. Statistical data confirms that the method provides effective control at minimal cost. This cost is easily offset by additional tonnage found in areas considered to be waste.

The wide use of bulk ANFO in surface coal mines is questionable in our energy conscious environment. At many locations, bulk ANFO is not the proper economic selection. Water conditions, energy requirements, waste and spillage, and vibration control are factors too often overlooked in the proper choice of blasting agents. Cost savings over 20% have been realized by converting bulk ANFO to packaged blasting agents. Future trends suggest greater concern for energy conservation in blasting will limit bulk ANFO applications and promote packaged products where quality can be maximized, waste and spillage eliminated, and water compatibility in wet areas assured.

Acid mine drainage became a reality through the exposure of the first bituminous coal seam, either by man or by nature. At first the small amount of acid formed was quickly and efficiently neutralized by basic rock strata and by neutral or alkaline water. As soon as extensive mining operations overtaxed nature's own defensive measures, acid mine drainage became a problem of concern to government and the coal industry. It was the purpose of the studies conducted at Mellon Institute to accumulate knowledge, both applied and fundamental, relating to the formation and disposal of acid mine effluents. It was during this program that the microbiology of acid mine water was studied. Most bituminous coal mine effluents are highly acidic and contain, along with other ions, high concentrations of ferrous iron. The acid is sulfuric, and. the iron is present as the sulfate; both are the oxidation products of iron sulfides (FeS2) which are present in the form of pyrites, marcasites, or other sulfuritic minerals. "The Jinhae Geoje gas pipeline tunnel project is the largest (7.8 km) and the deepest (90 m) subsea tunnel in South Korea. This tunnel will house a pipeline to carry natural gas from the mainland to Geoje Island southeast of the country to alleviate the increased demands for natural gas, especially in the winter season. Tunneling is currently underway using two slurry shield TBMs of 3.5 m diameter. This paper describes the major design elements of the tunneling machines and their performance evaluation. For this purpose, a thorough analysis of geotechnical information was performed to evaluate the tunnel elevation to reduce the risk of tunneling under high water pressure in unstable and permeable rock mass under 9 bar water pressure. TBM specification and TBM performance were also analyzed using different methods, including well-known models as well as a rotary cutting machine test developed in house in Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company. INTRODUCTION High demand for natural gas, especially in winter season was the primary driving factor for the design of the Jinhae Geoje gas pipeline project. This project is located southeast of South Korea between Jinhae district and Geoje Island and runs for over 50 km length. The mid part of this project includes a 3.5 m diameter subsea tunnel consisting of two sections of Geoje to Jiri Island (4.3 km) and Jinhae to Jiri Island (3.5 km). Figure 1 shows the tunnel project location and its layout. Figure 2 shows the geological profile along the tunnel. As can be seen, the tunnel passes mainly through three rock types: granite, tuff breccia, and andesite tuff. This tunnel was planned to be constructed by two face pressurized shielded TBMs and to be lined with a segmental lining of 2.8 m internal diameter. The major challenge for this tunnel is its maximum expected water pressure at the tunnel invert (8.83 bar). At such a high water pressure, the TBMs required special design to ensure they can handle unexpected water pressure and to ensure the risks for the TBM maintenance intervention are minimal. In this regard, a thorough analysis was conducted on the TBM design parameters and geotechnical information to define required TBMs’ design parameters and to identify the safest tunnel elevation. This paper provides a brief overview of the project geotechnical information, TBM selection and its design specification, tunnel elevation selection, and TBM penetration rate evaluation. In this regard, a rotary cutting machine testing equipment was used to perform trial tests on a similar rock type encountered along the tunnel for performance evaluation and optimization."

In the fairly recent past, with a history of cheap and abundant energy, it has been possible to predict with reasonable confidence that world energy demand would continue to double about every 15 years. Those who attempted to forecast the role of nuclear energy in future electricity generation could also start with the fairly safe assumption that electricity demand would increase even faster : with a doubling in demand about every 10 years. To estimate the likely future world demand for uranium it was then necessary to introduce a number of other assumptions including the rate of penetration of nuclear energy, the timing and the specific fuel requirements. This series of assumptions naturally compounded the uncertainty, but, remarkably, usually led to future uranium demands being overestimated. Such a bias which has almost always been observed in predictions made over the past 20 years has increasingly made uranium producers sceptical when expected to match the forecast demand with increased production capacity and supporting reserves. This scepticism has, of course, been reinforced by the persistence so far of a buyers' market in uranium throughout the entire period of emergence of commercial nuclear electricity generation.
