A booster fan is an underground fan installed in series with a main surface fan and used to boost the air pressure of the ventilation air passing through it. To accomplish this objective, the fan is installed in a permanent stopping and equipped with airlock doors, a monitoring system, and interlocking devices between main and booster fan controls. The stopping and doors are used to prevent flow recirculation, and the monitors to ensure safe operation of the fan. A booster fan, properly sized and sited, can be used to create safe work conditions and allow the extraction of minerals from areas that would otherwise be uneconomic to mine. In deep and large mines with heavy emissions of air contaminants, the required quantities of air can only be supplied by using high pressure fans. These fans will inevitably induce significant losses of fresh airflow through the stoppings and doors. For well defined ventilation circuits, booster fans can be used to decrease the main fan pressures and reduce the leakage flows. However, this will require a good understanding of the correct ventilation practice, from planning to operation and maintenance of booster fans. The objective of this study is to investigate the conditions under which booster fans can be used safely and efficiently in underground coal mines. Specifically, the study is directed at (1) collecting reliable information on airway resistances and flow requirements from two large U.S coal mines, (2) collecting fan performance data from one or more existing coal mine where booster fans are used regularly, (3) monitoring the performance of booster fans in a laboratory model and an experimental mine, (4) developing a booster fan selection method to assist the ventilation engineer at the planning stage, and (5) training six M.S. or Ph.D. graduate students in advanced mine ventilation.

During mining, the surficial aquifer and, in some cases, the top of the uppermost confining unit within the mined areas are excavated. Portions are removed from the area for resource recovery. Until the mined areas are reclaimed, the surrounding unmined area continues to dewater. The impact of mining and subsequent restoration of the surficial aquifer on the ground and surface water resources of the watershed affected by the mining will be described. This will be done in terms of ground water recharge, ground water levels, and base flow and runoff to surface streams. Data from actual mining situations will be used in analyses and discussion. Recommendations will be made for further research.

INTRODUCTION Shotcrete can be defined as spray-applied concrete with a maximum size aggregate in excess of 9.5 mm (0.375 in.). The concept evolved from guniting, which uses smaller aggregate and generally produces concrete with poorer physical properties. The larger aggregate used in shotcrete requires less water in the mix, while offering larger bonding surfaces, thus imparting greater tensile and compressive strengths. TYPES OF MACHINES Two basic designs of shotcrete machines in general use are the wet or prehydrated zero slump and low slump type, and the dry or nozzle hydrated machines. Fig. 1 shows a typical zero-slump machine in a con¬figuration commonly used for small-volume require¬ments. The prehydrated zero-slump machine mixes exactly proportioned batches in a sealed pressurized chamber. "Slugs" of hydrated shotcrete mix and com¬pressed air are sent through a distribution hose to the nozzle where the wet mix emerges as a spray. The spray is directed onto the rock surface by the nozzle operator. The low-slump machine is similar, except that a thick slurry mix of aggregate is delivered throughout the distribution hose to the nozzle. Fig. 2 shows a typical low-slump shotcrete machine used in moderate-volume applications. The nozzle-hydrated shotcrete machine accepts a premixed "dry" (4 to 6% moisture) batch of aggregate and cement. A constant feed of this mix is directed by compressed air through the distribution hose to the nozzle. At the nozzle, water for hydration is introduced into the emerging spray. The hydrated mixture is di¬rected onto the rock surface by the nozzle operator. Fig. 3 shows a typical dry-mix machine. The major difference between the two basic machine designs is the consistency of the shotcrete quality. Pre¬hydrated machines have high degrees of consistency and produce high-strength concrete, resulting from their ability to produce exact mixtures of zero or low-slump concrete within the machine. Nozzle-hydrated machines tend to produce poorer quality concrete because of the difficulty in controlling the water content at the nozzle. Water input essentially is an art. As resources are depleted in coal mines, isolated support pillars are often mined. Cemented paste backfill has been used to provide support during the mining of these pillars due to its safe and green mining characteristics. However, traditional cemented paste backfill mining has some shortcomings, such as poor adaptability to geological structure, leakage of paste during filling, imperfect roof-contact in partially backfilled areas, and insufficient roof strata support before the backfill reaches its design strength. This paper presents the results of a case study where L-shaped interval cemented paste backfill technology has been safely used to mine an isolated coal panel beneath existing surface structures. This backfilling method has the advantages of preventing paste leakage, improving the backfilled ratio, reducing surface subsidence, and strongly adapting to geological structure. During this field application, the setting pressure of the backfill shield reached 20 MPa, the compressive strength of the backfilling body reached 2.0 MPa, and the backfilled ratio reached 93.7%. Observational ground monitoring showed that roof-to-floor convergence in adjacent roadways ranged from 132 to 167 mm. No obvious fractures or separations in the overlying strata were observed by a borescope. The maximum surface subsidence was 342 mm, the subsidence factor was 0.136, and the damage to surface buildings was within Grade I (slight damage). This case study clearly demonstrates that the L-shaped interval cemented paste backfill method can be safely used to mine the isolated coal panel beneath surface buildings.

The quest for ore in an open pit is fundamentally an earth moving proposition. This thesis is vividly underscored by the rapidly increasing volume of waste to be removed in newer mines, where in some instances waste to ore ratios have reached as high as 20 to 1. Continuing depletion of high grade reserves, greater demand for raw materials, coupled with ever climbing labor costs, have made the problem still more pronounced and the need for more effective means of earth moving in an open pit even more acute. A conservative approach to the problem has been to upgrade the sizes of conventional earth moving equipment such as shovels and trucks. In many open pits, particularly in the C.S., this has been responsible for the generally down- ward trend of earth moving costs. None the less, the investment costs of these machines are high, and their gigantic engines are seldom fully utilized. Moreover, a large number of operators are required and maintenance remains relatively high. Unfortunately most people have felt that no other viable alternative was in sight within today's technological capabilities.

In an increasingly environmentally conscious world, mining's importance to society has often been misunderstood and even maligned by the public. Extreme and impractical ideas have often been presented to children because of the lack of accurate, timely resource materials available to educators. In the late 1960s. two mining engineers, S.P. "Pi" Warren and C.L. "Lindy" Barker, became aware of this situation. They proposed to develop a summer field course to provide a factual overview of the minerals industry for teachers. The pair believed that teachers could become better informed to educate students, and future generations, about mining. These two Colorado Mining Association (CMA) members felt that such a course could reduce much of the misunderstanding about this vital industry. This could be done by providing a balanced perspective of mining, not only for kindergarten-through-grade-12 teachers, but also for the students they would be teaching during their careers. Students who better understood the minerals industry could better formulate an unbiased view of it. The course would seek recognized authorities from industry, academia and government who would lecture in their respective fields of expertise. The course would provide a total concept of the coal, aggregate, metals and industrial minerals industries. It would include geology, geophysics, exploration, mining, processing, marketing, product applications, economic, mining history, careers, and environmental responsiblity. When possible, site visits would permit educators to view operations and to meet the men and women who are industry leaders. Teachers would pay a small tuition fee. The balance of the program expenses for each teacher would be paid through scholarships provided by industry and individuals. The "total concept" idea obtained the support of the minerals industry. The support of CMA's Education Committee and the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) was obtained in 1968. Colorado's Commission on Higher Education approved teacher recertification credits through CSM's Office of Special Progams and Continuing Education for those successfully completing the program. The first six-week series of classes presenting the total concept of the indus¬try was held at CSM in 1969. In 1977, the CMA Education Foundation Inc. (CMAEF) was established as a Colorado nonprofit corporation. The "Total Concept of the Mining Industry" (Total Concept) course was placed under its sponsorship. CMAEF is dedicated toward this continuing education program (Table 1). In 1994, the course was streamlined to four-weeks for six hours recertification credit.

"The immediate ring closure method, in which the entire periphery of the excavation area is closed immediately with an initial support within a short distance from the excavation face, has been increasingly used in Japan, especially, as one of the most effective countermeasures against difficult ground conditions in conventional tunneling. For reasonable design of this method, the performance requirements for the initial support should be clearly stated. The analysis of construction data of 30 road tunnels and the three-dimensional numerical modeling based on real data suggest that the immediate ring closure stabilizes the tunnel structure and the ground around it because of the inner pressure effect of the initial support, especially, for low ground competence factor and small internal friction angle. Finally, the bending compressive strength and the cross-sectional geometry of the initial support have to be considered in the tunnel design while considering the earth pressure and ground properties. INTRODUCTION Conventional tunneling methods often deal with difficult ground conditions such as soft ground or squeezing ground conditions. The immediate ring closure method, in which the entire periphery of the excavation area is immediately supported within a short distance from the excavation face (Figure 1), has been increasingly used in Japan as one of the most effective countermeasures against difficult ground conditions in conventional tunneling (e.g. Takahashi et al., 2011; Nakaoka et al., 2013). "Replacing the century old rail tunnels that run beneath the Hudson River and carry about 200,000 passengers per day between New York to New Jersey has been a high priority for many years. But after Superstorm Sandy hit the east coast of the United States in 2012, the urgency to replace the tunnels increased dramatically. The Hudson Tunnels project is one of nine projects that make up the larger $30 billion Gateway Project. The Gateway Project has been called the most urgent infrastructure program in the country and the Hudson Tunnels is the most critical part of the project, as it will build a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River and rebuild the existing and deteriorating North River Tunnel that connects New York and New Jersey.“Superstorm Sandy proved the level of resiliency of the tunnels, which was not very good,” Amtrak deputy chief engineer structures James Richter told attendees of the George A. Fox Conference in New York City on Jan. 23. Age and corrosive salts deposited by flood waters from the storm in 2012 have affected interior concrete and copper wiring in the tunnels. “Since then, things have been deteriorating and getting less reliable.”Richter, along with Mohammed Nasim, senior director engineering design, both with Amtrak, spoke at the 2018 George A. Fox Conference where more than 350 tunneling and underground construction professionals attended the conference at the Graduate Center of the City University if New York to share insights about the complexities many of them face on daily basis.Under the theme of “Managing construction of complex underground projects: Strategies for tunneling in populated areas,” the one-day conference featured presentations from some of the top minds in the tunneling and underground construction industry. The presentations touched on everything from the highly technical challenges of constructing tunnels through changing geology while working beneath cities and rivers, to navigating the complex financial issues and contracts that come with the projects that have many stakeholders.All of those challenges, and more are part of the Hudson Tunnels project. It is one of the best examples of the full complexities of a complex tunnel project, with the added pressure of securing funding from state and federal government entities under an increasingly tight deadline."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of a filtered air delivery system to reduce respirable dust exposure to roof bolter operators in underground coal mines. When performing roof bolting operations, roof bolter operators may experience exposure to high levels of respirable dust during a working shift, especially when working downwind of the continuous mining machine. While drilling and installing roof bolts, this filtered air system supplies a clean curtain of air over the roof bolter operator by means of a plenum mounted beneath the canopy. This experimentally designed air curtain, adapted for roof bolting machines used in this study, is based upon previous design prototypes, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, and trial-and-error testing. Both prototype and final designs were tested in the full-scale mining galleries at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) in Pittsburgh before being taken underground for field testing. Test results of the system in both laboratory and field studies show reductions in operator exposure to respirable dust when the operator is positioned directly under the protected zone of the canopy.

In 1967 a large kaolin deposit was discovered on the Jari River, a tributary of the Amazon, in the territory of Amapa in Brazil. The kaolin occurs in the Barreiras Series of Pliocene age and is part of the Belterra Clay. The kaolin was drilled and tested, and today a modern processing plant is producing over 150,000 tons per year of high quality paper coating clay. Some of the problems associated with the mine development, processing, personnel, and marketing of this remote kaolin deposit are discussed. The mineralogy and physical properties of the Jari kaolin deposit are also described.

The steady growth of the Northwest portion of the United States over the past two decades, and the very rapid development of Northern California, Western Nevada, and Oregon in particular, led the Calaveras Cement Company people to Shasta County, California in 1957. The presence of a large deposit of high calcium carbonate limestone had been recognized for many years, but it required the momentum of an expanding economy to make these long known reserves valuable. This, plus the availability of a reliable supply of fuel in the form of natural gas, and the ready means of shipping the product to the consumer both by highway and railroad, seemed to offer the proper combination to launch a successful venture. The Calaveras Cement Company had been manufacturing cement by the wet process since 1925 at their plant at San Andreas, California. Starting with two small kilns, the plant in Calaveras County started an expansion program in 1945 that ultimately resulted in the plant as it exists today, consisting of five kilns with a combined production of 4.5 million barrels annually.

Investments in fuel minerals and non-fuel minerals by petroleum companies are not a new phenomena. During the past 25 years, oil firms have entered mining via the acquisition route as well as by the direct development of grassroots mines. In the early 1980s, the "merger mania" in the natural resource industries came to a head. Oil company takeovers of mining firms, as well as other mergers between oil producers, captured headlines repeatedly, and speculation ran wild as to who would next acquire whom. Table 1 summarizes leading mining company mergers in the past two decades. There are some special features to the latest round of minerals investments undertaken by oil companies. First, direct takeovers of mining companies have become the preferred means of entry into minerals, with entry from scratch being relegated to the sidelines. This was not always the case. While there are instances of oil firms buying coal and copper companies dating back to the 1950s and 1960s, most of the early minerals work by petroleum firms was from internally generated projects. When the oil companies first became involved in uranium, for example, the uranium mining industry was in its infancy. There was not much market structure to buy, and it was relatively easy for everyone to get into uranium on the ground floor.

Outokumpu Electronics has designed a new on-line coal slurry ash analyzer, based on an instrument developed at Michigan Technological University. The primary goal was to build an accurate instrument at the lowest possible cost. The instrument determines ash content from measurements of x-ray backscatter, iron Ka fluorescence, and low-energy y-ray absorption. It is capable of measuring the ash content with a standard error of 1.1% ash over an analysis range of 9-21% ash and 7-22% solids. The analyzer was tested on coals from United States, Poland, Great Britain and the USSR.

"Refuge alternatives provide shelter to miners trapped underground during a disaster. Manufacturers must demonstrate that their refuge alternatives meet the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and management of heat from the occupants and mechanical/chemical systems. In this study, miner size and activity level were used to determine the metabolic heat rate, oxygen requirements and carbon dioxide generation that are representative of miners in a refuge situation. A convenience sample of 198 male miners was used for the distribution of current U.S. coal miners, and the composite 95th percentile height and weight were determined to be 193 cm (76 in.) and 133 kg (293 lb). The resting metabolic rate (RMR) was determined to be representative of activity level in a refuge alternative. The highest likely metabolic heat generation ranged from 113 to 134 W, depending on occupancy. The highest required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal were estimated to be 23 L (0.81 cu ft) of oxygen per hour per person and 20 L (0.71 cu ft) of carbon dioxide per hour per person, which means the margin of safety is 50 percent or more compared with the MSHA requirements. The information on metabolic heat generation can be used to assess refuge alternative thermal environments by testing or simulation. The required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal can be used to assess refuge alternative requirements. Techniques utilized to incorporate geological data in computer modeling and ore reserve estimation have undergone considerable evolution during the past fifteen years. Computer analysis and evaluation of two precious metal deposits are presented as examples of innovative computer techniques developed at Asarco. The first is a gold deposit occurring in a steeply dipping Pre-Cambrian greenstone sequence. The second is a manto-like manganiferous silver deposit occurring in a relatively flat sequence of Late-Paleozoic sediments. In both deposits, four sub-horizontal zones of geological influence are evaluated.

The Star-Morning mine is a. 1000-ton-per-day lead-zinc producer located in the easterly part of the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of North Idaho. The property includes both the Star and Morning mines which are located on the westerly and easterly portions of the same complex of veins. The mine is 70% owned by the Bunker Hill Company (Gulf Resources, Inc.) of Kellogg, Idaho, 30% owned by Hecla Mining Company, and operated by Hecla Mining Company with head-quarters in Wallace, Idaho. One of the characteristics of mines in the Coeur d'Alene District is that many of the ore bodies extend to very great depths. The Star is no exception, but rather a leading example. The complex of near vertical veins and ore shoots extend some 7000 feet below the surface at present, with a maximum strike length of about 4000 feet. Ore has been mined on 20 separate veins and ore structures. More than 50 miles of headings have been driven and nearly 23 million tons of ore mined since the Morning mine started in.189S. The problems of mining at such depths are formidable temperature on the bottom level is 1100 F and high humidity problem. Pressure from the sheer weight of rock is as high foot. This paper will deal with providing a new access to the deeper levels of the mine and the installation of a hoist and related items to service these levels. By the time development had reached the 7100 level (Figure 1), it became apparent that a different 'hoisting system was going to be necessary if we were going to continue to mine at a profit. The main shaft extended to the 4000 level at which point a ?:3100"'foot winze shaft provided access to the 7100 level. The two hoists were limited to handling 3-ton payloads at 1200 to 1500 feet per minute. Some ores are still produced from above the 4000 level but as these ore reserves become depleted the hoisting of the desired tonnage (1000+/day-) from the lower levels of the mine would exceed the capacity of the existing hoisting system. A decision was made to sink a new vertical shaft at a point well in the south wall of the ore bodies where strong rocks and a minimum of faulting was expected and to purchase and install a new hoist capable of hoisting over 7000 feet. This new' shaft, designated as the No. 4 Shaft, was planned to reach 2000 feet below the 7100 level which was the deepest level at that time. The hoist would be in-stalled on the ,main 2000 Adit level which is used as an access and haulage level to the concentrator and surface plant in Burke.

The Bagdad solvent extraction plant was commissioned in 1969 and was the second solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) operation to be built following the Ranchers Bluebird SX-EW plant near Miami, AZ. The current operation still resembles its original form, with four independent sections that run in parallel with each consisting of many long and narrow settlers. Through its 40-year history, the Bagdad SX circuit has experienced a range of pregnant leach solution flows and grades. The unique design of the Bagdad circuit has allowed for numerous configuration changes to accommodate the changing operational conditions, while maintaining an extraction recognized in the industry as excellent.

"This paper will explain how the Contractor and Owner avoided a contractual dispute involving characterization, impacts, and final remedy for challenging ground conditions encountered during drill and blast excavation of the starter tunnel required for launch of the tunnel boring machine (TBM). During excavation more than 600 feet underground, the Contractor encountered a large complex fault zone subject to more than 14 bar of water pressure. Successive ground inflows from the fault complex over a six-month period presented significant technical and partnership challenges for the team and ultimately delayed the project by nearly one year. This paper will discuss how the Contractor, Owner, and their respective consultants worked together to address these challenges, make decisions, and ultimately move the project to successful completion. PROJECT BACKGROUND AND NEED Seven states of the western United States of America rely heavily on the Colorado River and its tributaries for their water supply. The primary source of water for the Colorado River is winter snow that falls in the mountains ringing the Colorado River basin, including the Rocky Mountains, the Wind River Mountains, and the Uinta Mountains. Flows in the Colorado River vary significantly from year to year, depending on the amount of snow and rain deposited in the basin. During the 1980s and 1990s, snowfall was relatively abundant and Colorado River flows were high on average. Beginning in the year 2000 and continuing to the present day, snowfall has been well below documented historical averages and Colorado River flows have diminished. In fact, a trend toward diminishing flows is evident during the period of the historical record. This variability in Colorado River flows and the trend to lower flows is represented in the following Figure 1."

In recent years, economies of scale have continued to drive copper projects to larger throughputs to offset depleting lower grade resources. A decade ago, there were only a small number of projects that stretched beyond 100 kt/d (110,000 stpd) throughput rates. Today, and moving forward, virtually all the major copper projects are sized beyond this, with throughput rates up to 250 kt/d (275,000 stpd) now under evaluation for a number of key projects in Chile and Peru. This paper explores the development from the 160 m3 (5,650 cu ft) flotation cells, through to the 257 m3 (9,076 cu ft) cells and to the current 660 m3 (23,380 cu ft) machines. The contributions of specific copper concentrators to this growth phase are reviewed in this article. The historical basis of flotation machine scale-up is also briefly discussed. Metallurgical results as well as layout, maintenance and operational aspects are highlighted.

The past few years have produced a rash of demands for changes in America's way of doing things. From manufacturer to consumer, the rules have been changed. Some of the demands were needed and, when legislated to requirements, did manage some good for all concerned. Other demands made by zealots and taken up by regulatory agencies have forced costly changes on our way of life. No segment of industry has been exposed to more new rules and regulations than the deep coal mining industry in the United States. There is no denying that some good has evolved, but most mining men know that the effects have done more to reduce production and increase cost than they were ever intended to do.
