Introduction ASARCO's Ray Operations include an open-pit copper mine in the Mineral Creek Mining District of Pinel County. The district is located in east central Arizona, 132 km (82 miles) southeast of Phoenix, AZ, and 126 km (78 miles) north of Tucson, AZ. The mine lies 8 km (5 miles) north of the Gila River in Mineral Creek Valley, between the Tortilla Mountains to the west and the Dripping Springs Range to the east. The rich copper deposits of the Mineral Creek mining district were first noted by a US Army Officer in 1847. The Ray Copper Company was the first major operation in the area. The company was named after the Ray mining claim, which was one of the earliest recorded claims. After decades of sporadic and unsuccessful mining ventures, the Ray Consolidated Mining Company was formed in 1910. The company introduced one of the first successful block caving operations in the world. In 1933, the Kennecott Copper Corporation acquired the Ray Consolidated Mining Company and continued operation of the mine under the same name until 1943, when the property was renamed the Ray Mines Division of Kennecott. Underground mining continued until 1955, when the mine was converted to an open pit operation. In November 1986, ASARCO Inc. purchased the Ray Mines Division and related facilities from Kennecott. The purchase also included the Hayden concentrator and the Ray Smelter, located approximately 32 km (20 miles) from the Ray Mine. This paper summarizes the 54,400 tpd (60,000 stpd) in-pit crusher and overland-conveying system and the 24,200 tpd (30.000 stpd) copper SAG concentrator and tailings disposal system constructed at ASARCO's Ray Complex - Ray Operations. General description of facilities The Ray concentrator includes a sulfide SAG concentrator, a "relocatable" in-pit primary-crushing plant and overland-conveyor system, a concentrator tailings-disposal system and plant ancillary facilities, The major elements of the project include: • A relocatable Fuller-Traylor in-pit 1524-mm (60-in) x 2261-mm (89-in) primary gyratory crusher at the 442 m (1450 ft) mine elevation. The crushing plant has a nominal capacity of 54,400 tpd (60,000 stpd) of sulfide ore. • A 1524-mm (60-in) wide x 1253-m (4110-ft) long overland belt conveyor, which runs from the in-pit crushing facility to a transfer station serving both the Ray Concentrator and the existing Hayden concentrator railroad load-out facility. • A 1524-mm (60-in) wide x 152-m (500-ft) long stackerbelt conveyor, which delivers a nominal 27,200 tpd (30,000 stpd) of ore from the transfer station to a 23,600 t (26,000 st) live-capacity coarse-ore stockpile serving the Ray Concentrator. • A nominal 27,200-tpd (30,000-stpd) concentrator, including semiautogenous grinding, flotation, copper concentrate filtration and associated plant ancillary facilities. • A tailings disposal system. Flotation tailings are pumped from the Ray Concentrator to a 122-m (400-ft) diam. thickener, located 4.8 km (3 miles) southeast of the Ray Concentrator site. The thickener overflow is pumped to two 76.2-m (250-ft.) diam. concrete process-water reservoirs. The thickener underflow, at 45% solids, is pumped to a new tailings disposal site located at Elder Gulch. • An HDPE-lined temporary-containment area to collect material from Ray Concentrator plant upsets and local storm-water run-off from a 100-year, 24-hour rain event. •A reclaim-water system from the Elder Gulch tailing pond area to the Ray Concentrator. • A 610-mm (24-in.) diam. x 31.9-km (19.2 mile) long fresh-water pipeline from the Hayden fresh-water-well field system to the Ray Concentrator. The overall process design criteria for the new Ray Concentrator is based on a nominal throughput of 27,200 tpd (30,000 stpd) of ore at 90% plant availability. However, based on the maximum performance capacity of the installed grinding equipment, it may be possible to achieve a sustained operating level in excess of 36,300 tpd (40,000 stpd) when processing soft ores. The contract for the construction of the Inline Pump Station for the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District involves the sinking of three shafts and the excavation of a pump chamber. The shafts are being sunk to a depth of 104 meters and pass through 52m of sediments before encountering dolomitic bedrock. The pump chamber is constructed in dolomite. The sediments are alluvial, estuarine and lacustrine in origin, with some ice margin deposits. They comprise loosely consolidated fine to coarse grained sand, silts, clays and gravels, and they are heavily saturated with a water content often above 60%. The water table is at a depth of 3m. The dolomite is silurian, generally dense, with some clay-filled vugs and shale partings. Until 1983, underground construction in the Milwaukee area had been limited to depths of 26m in the sediments and 20m in the dolomites. Water control methods had included caissons, compressed air, extensive internal and external dewatering, and grouting. Flows of 20 liters per second were commonplace with as much as 80 liters per second being encountered in the rock. However, in 1984 work was commenced on the deep sections of the Milwaukee sewerage scheme with the letting of three major contracts including the Inline Pump Station. With excavation taking place at greater depths, it become obvious that previous methods of water control would be inappropriate. To protect against major inrushes of high pressure water in the rock, an extensive program of pre-grouting from the surface was specified. Water control in the sediments was left to the discretion of the contractor and in each case freezing was choosen. This paper describes in detail the grouting and freezing procedures.

During the 1980 decade, the rapid price increase for flake graphite has generated a high degree of interest for the discovery and the development of alternate occidental sources of supply in response to fluctuations in quality and availability from current producers. Alike many industrial minerals, graphite draws its complexity not only from its mineralogy and unique properties but also from the very large spectrum of industrial applications each calling for specific quality criterion. As new high technology uses are being developed, more rigid specifications will apply. Discovered during the latter part of 1988 by Mazarin inc., some 30 Km South of Fermont near the Quebec-Labrador border, the Lac Knife deposit was quickly identified as one of the world major long term alternate source of stable supply for this mineral. This paper also reviews the status of the project development as of late 1991, while updating previous papers published by Industrial Minerals1990 and Mining Magazine 1990.

In the environmentally conscious social atmosphere today, reclamation in surface mines has become a main issue to the public and the regulatory committees. In response to this increased attention, many regulatory committees have begun to enact more stringent regulations on surface mining operations. Operations across all spectrums of the industry have seen changes. Recently and most visibly the mountain top removal mines have seen several new regulations focusing on environmental protection. Specifically regulatory committees have emphasized a focus on the methods of reclamation and recovery of layers suitable for vegetation. These layers are the most visible once the operation has concluded. Also, these layers have the most human interaction (farming, hunting, and house development). Often times the new regulations enacted are shifting from a performance base to a standards base. The key differentiator being a performance base dictates the final result while a standards base dictates the method to achieve the result. The very nature of many regulations (especially those that are standards based) not only challenges the physical limitations of the equipment used today, they come with a financial impact. For the purpose of this paper, the model will be a surface coal operation, utilizing draglines as primary overburden movers. The coal seam is ten feet thick, the overburden ninety five feet thick, the pits are 150 feet wide, and the dragline is a Bucyrus Erie 1570.

In 2012, the estimated value of mineral production increased in the United States for the third consecutive year. Production and prices increased for most industrial mineral commodities mined in the United States. While production for most metals remained relatively unchanged, with the notable exception of gold, the prices for most metals declined. Minerals remained fundamental to the U.S. economy, contributing to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels, including mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. Minerals? contribution to the GDP increased for the second consecutive year. Trends in other sectors of the domestic economy were similar to those in mineral production and consumption rates (Table 1). After continued decline following the 2008-2009 recession, the construction industry began to show signs of improvement late in 2011 and throughout 2012, with increased production and consumption of cement, construction sand and gravel, crushed stone and gypsum, mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction.

Several startup or longtime underground stone mines have experienced unanticipated roof control difficulties due to the variable geologic character of the roof strata. Careful mapping of roof conditions, and identification of controlling geologic and mine geometric factors, lead to an understanding of the mechanisms causing roof problems. Factors such as unexpected rolls of the roof strata resulting in a gradual change from strong to weak roof; encountering open water-filled master joints; roof strata delamination due to internal water pressures; local karst features with mud, sand, and water hazards; and sudden loss of limestone roof due to paleo-channel erosion are some recent problems described. Strategies for overcoming these problems are discussed and detailed.

The objective of the experiment was to investigate the efficiency of hindered-settling column in recovering carbon from anthracite. Two types of Korean anthracites were prepared for feed materials. Each sample was crushed and classified by size, and washability analyses were performed. Separation efficiency was evaluated under various operating conditions using a laboratory scale hindered settling column. Results showed that the carbon recovery was higher for the smaller sizes, but the purity of the product was better for the larger sizes. In, overall, 2-0.21mm particles of 40-45 % ash could be processed into about 20 % ash products.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted a study to identify the sources of respirable dust and appropriate dust controls applicable to today's high tonnage longwall faces. The primary source of respirable dust identified is the cutting action of the shearer; however, the pct contribution of dust from coal transport through the stageloader/crusher was significant. This was primarily due to the high rate of mining, requiring rapid and constant coal transport. Techniques implemented for the control of shearer-generated dust included high drum water flow rates, deep cutting, shearer-clearer-type external water spray systems, and radio-remote control. The high water flow rates, and an enclosed stageloader with scrubber, were used to control dust during coal transport. No novel or effective control technology exists to control dust during support advance. Administrative controls for dust avoidance, and manual and batch-activated electro-hydraulic control systems were used to keep support movers out of the dust generated during support advance.

"This paper presents an assessment of the impact of tunneling and its associated risks on pile foundations located in the influence zone of tunneling operation. Tunneling in proximity of pile foundations introduces deformations in piles and in turn induces additional axial and bending forces. In modern mechanized tunneling, ground convergence is controlled through balancing the earth pressure at the tunnel face as well as applying pressurized bentonite through the shield. Reducing ground deformation can consequently lower the additional deformations and forces developed in the pile foundation and lessen the associated construction risk. In this paper, comprehensive detailed finite element modeling was performed to quantify the effect of the different parameters on induced forces in piles. Finite element models took into account the nonlinear behavior of soil and pile-soil interface. The modeling results are of practical importance in risk evaluation of tunneling in vicinity of pile foundations. INTRODUCTION Tunneling operation in congested urban areas becomes more frequent as demand for further utilizing underground spaces grows. In urban settings, it is not uncommon for tunnel designers to plan a tunnel route in close proximity to other structures to satisfy other competing objectives like raising the alignment to reduce excavation volume. Setting the alignment close to existing structures increases the risk involved in the project. It is the responsibility of the designer to thoroughly identify, assess, and mitigate all design risks involved. In this paper, we focus on the aspects involved in tunnel construction in proximity to existing pile foundations. Tunnel operations introduce deformation in the soil mass. Consequently, a pile located within deformation zone experiences extra forces as a result of the imposed deformation. The developed forces and bending moments can be in orders comparable with the pile capacity depending on the relative horizontal proximity of the tunnel and the relative depth of tunnel with respect to the pile length."

"In 2017, the total estimated value of nonfuel mineral production in the United States increased by 6 percent from 2016 (Table 1). The value of metals produced domestically increased by 12 percent and the value of industrial minerals produced domestically increased by 3 percent. Some metal commodity values (cobalt, magnesium metal and palladium) increased by more than 35 percent in 2017 from 2016 owing to higher prices.Some U.S. metal mines and processing facilities remained idle in 2017, including three primary aluminum smelters in Indiana, Missouri and Washington; a titanium sponge facility in Utah and a byproduct vanadium production facility in Utah. In contrast, new gold mines opened in late 2016 and 2017 in Nevada and South Carolina, respectively, and iron ore mines in Michigan and Minnesota restarted or operated for the full year. In addition, increased oil and natural gas drilling activity led to increased production of some industrial mineral commodities that are used for oil and gas drilling. Production of some industrial minerals, especially those used in infrastructure and residential construction, remained essentially unchanged in 2017, a reflection of the limited growth in construction activity. The production of some metals, including iron and steel, aluminum and other nonferrous metals and nonmetallic mineral products increased. Overall, mining activity trended upward as the result of increases in coal mining, oil and gas extraction and metal mining (Table 2).Discussion of mine production is commonly segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. Tonnages of natural aggregates are orders of magnitude larger than those for most other mineral commodities, thus making direct comparisons based on weight meaningless (Fig. 1)."

Electric vehicles powered by lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are being developed by mining vehicle manufacturers as a replacement for diesel-powered vehicles. Explosion-proof (XP) enclosures are frequently employed to enclose electrical ignition sources in gaseous underground mines to prevent the spread of an internal methane-air explosion to a nearby explosive atmosphere. Due to thermal runaway (TR), Li-ion batteries have the potential to cause pressurized explosions in an enclosed structure. Past research has shown the potential for well-confined Li-ion cell TR to drive pressures beyond the conventional pressure specification for XP enclosures. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) used an Accelerating Rate Calorimeter (ARC) to induce thermal runaway of Lithium Titanate or Lithium Titanium Oxide (LTO) type 18650 cells enclosed within containers with various volumes and found an inverse power relationship between the TR pressure and available free space. The results were similar in magnitude to that of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, which were used in prior testing. Temperatures, gas amounts, and TR pressure-rise rates were also recorded. The data indicate that with enough free space, the pressures can be lowered below the conventional pressure specification for XP enclosures.

The use of belt air as an intake source at longwall operations has changed greatly over the past decades. The practical considerations for the use of belt air are controlled by a variety of factors, including airflow quantity and velocity, coal methane content, methane desorption rates, coal mining rate, belt length, stopping leakage and the number of gateroad entries. At longwall operations, the advantages and disadvantages of belt air are different than for gateroad development and longwall panel extraction. During gateroad development, the use of belt air to ventilate the working section will reduce the leakage from the intake to the belt compared to the belt air being ventilated outby the working sections because of lower pressure differentials. A greater quantity of airflow will reach the last open crosscut with the belt on intake than outby, given the same amount of pressure and airflow available at the mouth of the section. This paper will investigate the current ventilation practices regarding the use of belt air during gateroad development and longwall panel extraction. Operating considerations regarding air quantities and pressures to deliver the required airflow will be investigated using ventilation network modeling.

Compania Minera Disputada de las Condes (CMD), an Exxon Affiliate stewarded by Exxon Coal and Minerals Company, operates two' copper mines and concentrators in Chile. Pilot plant studies were initiated in 1984 using a 0.46 meter and a 0.91 meter diameter column for the cleaning of copper concentrate. This eventually resulted in the design and operation of a rectangular column with an area of 6.8 m2, increasing the final copper concentrate grade from about 30% to almost 32'1. Cu without any loss in copper recovery. Evaluation studies of a commercial bubble generator as against the previously used filter cloth air sparger are now in progress.

One of the more energy-efficient methods for size reduction, namely particle-bed comminution under high compressive loads, was employed to grind eight minerals and ores, using up to 250 MPa pressure. A new approach based on the self-preserving character of the ground product size distributions and a linear energy-reduction ratio relationship is proposed for analyzing this mode of size reduction. The grind ability of the material when comminuted in a particle bed is about one-half that of the single-particle crushing mode, which is in agreement with previous estimates of the relative efficiencies of energy utilization based on direct measurements of surface area produced. The loss of efficiency may be attributed to energy dissipation by particle interaction phenomena in compressed beds.

Several laboratory methods are available to determine the thermal conductivity of rocks, but most of them are complex and cumbersome. The present study explains the working principle of Lee’s apparatus, which is relatively simple, easy to fabricate and use, and provides consistent results. In the present study, thermal conductivities of sandstone cores obtained from an Indian coal mine are determined using Lee’s apparatus. An approach is discussed to determine the temperature gradient of sandstone specimens while cooling and is used to calculate thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivities of different sandstone specimens have values between 2.37 and 2.59 Wm−1°C−1. For different sandstone cores obtained from the field, properties including specific gravity, specific heat capacity, thermal diffusivity and porosity, along with thermal conductivity, were determined and highlighted in this study.

Experience at Energy West Mines in the Wasatch Plateau Coal Field, Utah, has shown that longwall face bursts occur mostly near the tailgate when extracting the third adjacent longwall in a panel section where depths exceed 610 m (2000 ft). It is believed that this is due to a combination of cover depth and side abutment stresses created by the widening of a pressure arch formed by interlocking and bridging of large blocks of" very competent strata. The 60-m-thick (200 ft) Castlegate Sandstone probably plays a key role in pressure arching. This paper presents a back-analysis of the location and magnitude of the stresses associated with face bursts that occurred when mining the 7th Right Longwall at the Deer Creek Mine. Improvement of these conditions may be achieved by widening the longwalls to attain critical subsidence width sooner while mining the second long-wall, and to reduce stresses at the face. Wider longwall faces, however, increase the chance of sandstone channel interception often associated with bursts. Satisfactory mitigation of face bursts beyond cover depths of 610 to 670 m (2000 to 2200 ft) may be difficult without using destressing techniques. The hydraulic fracturing/liquid infusion technique seems to offer the best possibilities for application in longwall mining.

"Seamount cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (hereafter crusts) are authigenic iron/manganese hydroxide/oxide deposits formed from direct precipitation of minerals from seawater onto a hard substrates surface. Crusts contain significant concentrations of cobalt, manganese, nickel, copper, platinum, rare earth elements and other valuable metallic elements, with potential economic value. Regulations on Prospecting and Exploration for Cobalt-rich Ferromanganese Crusts in the "Area" was approved by the Council and Assembly of the International Seabed Authority in July 2012, China and Japan became the first to obtain exploration contracts, which were signed respectively in April and January 2014.The crusts form pavements and are mainly attached tightly to the surface of the substrate, and less commonly crusts coat talus debris located on the surface of sediment and substrate rock. During prospecting, crust sampling methods mainly include dredge, TVgrab and sub-bottom coring system. During exploration, the sub-bottom coring will be the dominant method for crust sampling, and if necessary, ROV sampling will be used. Usually the samples collected by different methods provide a larger quantity than samples needed for chemical analysis, but sampling quantity is a question that should be considered for mineral resource evaluation that how to ensure that the sampling is representation for the sampling station. Using the samples collected by China from Pacific seamounts, according to the designed analysis flow and Qeqott formula (Q=Kd2), the minimum reliable assay sample quantity ("MRASQ") of crusts for Mn, Co, and Ni are obtained. In the case of the sample homogeneous fines at ~100 mesh size (~0.15 mm), MRASQ for Mn, Co, Ni is respectively 4.5 g, 9 g and 9 g. This result provides the basic data for crusts resources evaluation."

"The Cerro Verde copper-molybdenum mining complex is located near Arequipa, Peru. A 108,000 t/d copper concentrator (C1 concentrator) commenced operation in late 2006 and was debottlenecked to a 120,000 t/d capacity in 2011. A feasibility study, initiated in May 2010, assessed the potential for expanding the processing rate of the large Cerro Verde sulfide reserve via the installation of a second, stand-alone, concentrator (C2 concentrator) capable of processing a nominal 240,000 t/d ore. The feasibility study was successful and the project advanced through engineering, permitting and construction. Ramp up to nameplate capacity was ahead of schedule. The overall project was completed on schedule and within budget. The details of the project and supporting components are described. The design philosophy and design basis of the concentrator facilities are discussed as are factors that influenced the concentrator layout. Risk mitigation features included in the design are reviewed. The factors that drove the successful and rapid ramp up to nameplate capacity are discussed. Operational experiences in the first year of plant operation and project lessons learned are described. INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A. (SMCV) operates a copper mine near Arequipa in southern Peru. Small scale operations operated intermittently until 1970 when the deposit reverted to the ownership of Minero Perú S.A (Peruvian government). Minero Perú S.A. commenced mining and processing of oxide reserves in 1972 and placed an SX-EW plant into production in 1976. The ownership of the property has changed hands several times over the years. Minero Perú sold Cerro Verde to Cyprus Climax Metals in 1994. Cyprus was acquired by Phelps Dodge in 1999. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) acquired Phelps Dodge in 2007. Several studies were undertaken during the 1990’s that tried to establish the economic justification to process the large primary sulfide resource that underlies the surface oxide deposit. None of these studies produced an economic conclusion until a feasibility study was completed by Phelps Dodge and SMCV in 2004. This study provided the economic justification for the construction of a 108,000 t/d concentrator during 2005 and 2006. The key to the success of this study was identifying a water source that was sufficient to support processing economies of scale. Concentrator operations commenced in late 2006. The original design production rate of 108,000 t/d was achieved on a 30 day moving average basis on the 266th day after ore was first introduced. During 2009, studies and evaluations were performed that had the objective of addressing observed concentrator bottlenecks to allow a production rate of 120,000 t/d to be achieved. The 120,000 t/d figure represents the sustainable production limits associated with the installed primary crusher and tailing thickeners which would have been prohibitively expensive to upgrade. Debottlenecking activities were implemented during 2010 allowing sustained production rates of 120,000 t/d to be achieved."

The Jamaica Mining Legislation requires the bauxite companies operating in the island to reclaim all mined-out lands (except those legitimately excluded) to the level of agricultural or pastoral productivity, which existed prior to the commencement of mining. If it is not possible to reclaim a mined-out area the companies are required to reclaim an equivalent area of some other land which had not previously been used for agricultural purposes, or alternatively, pay to the government the sum of $120 (US) for every acre of land mined in the particular sector. In the seventeen years since the programme commenced the companies have in general chosen to reclaim most of the mined-out lands, rather than the cheaper alternative. However, the ultimate success of the programme will depend not only on actual reclamation per se but moreso the productivity of the rehabilitated lands. There are a number of reasons why the accent has to be placed on productivity of the lands. The first is that Jamaica is a small country (4,450 square miles) with a population of nearly 2 million people. Because of its mountainous terrain it is estimated that only 35% of the land area is cultivable in crops and pastures; hence this limited area, as well as that which can be reclaimed, must be made highly productive in order to support local and export demands. The Mining companies own over 200,000 acres of land, and of this acreage, it is conservatively estimated that about 75,000 will be affected by mining and will be reclaimed. As such, the use of the land after mining can have an important bearing on Jamaica's future agricultural productivity. Engineers face significant challenges when determining what geometry provides the most profitable and safe stope for extraction. Several techniques and optimization algorithms have been developed in recent years, but most fail to find optimal solutions because they are heuristic or LP-based without efficient geometric constraints. This paper presents a two-dimensional binary linear programming (BLP) model for determining the optimal combination of blocks in a stope that maximizes the economic value of the layout of stopes for a sublevel deposit. The work draws from Queyranne and Wolsey’s (2017 & 2018) formulations of tight constraints for bounded up/down times in production planning problems to formulate novel and efficient geometric constraints along with geotechnical and grade constraints for the BLP stope layout optimization problem. Results from the model indicate that it is possible to formulate efficient shape constraints in LP-based approaches.
