INTRODUCTION If a uranium mill worker is involved in an accident, analysis of excreta for uranium content and[in vivo] counting methods are used to estimate the extent of the possible exposure and to predict the pattern of uranium distribution among tissues (Spitz, [et al]., 1980). Interpretations of urinary excretion data are based on studies of human exposures to single uranium compounds including U02, U308, U03, UF4, U02F2 and UF6 (Alexander, 1974). Refined uranium ore (yellowcake) is a variable mixture of U03-NH3-H20 adducts (ammonium diuranate, ADU) and their thermal conversion product, U308. The variability in composition of yellowcake (Kalkwarf, 1979; Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980; Dennis, Blauer and Kent, 1981) complicates the interpretation of bioassay data from individuals that might have inhaled any single yellowcake material. A test system would be useful to estimate the dissolution behavior of a particular yellowcake aerosol inhaled by a worker and aid in the interpretation of bioassay data collected before and after an accident. A series of experiments was conducted for this purpose. The objectives of these studies were to: 1) develop specific criteria for comparing [in vitro] dissolution systems and 2) use the criteria to evaluate solvents, methods and experimental temperature and pH conditions used in previous studies. Dissolution experiments were conducted using different combinations of solvents, conditions and methods with a common yellowcake sample. Because little information is available from human yellowcake inhalation exposures to evaluate the [in vitro] results, criteria for evaluation of different tests were derived from a model of yellowcake dissolution in lung constructed from a number of cases in which humans were exposed to single uranium compounds known to be in yellowcake (Mercer, 1975). MATERIALS AND METHODS Materials The powder used in the tests was taken from one lot of yellowcake obtained from a commercial uranium mill. The same powder was previously designated as Mill D in Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980 and Mill 2 in Kalkwarf, 1979. The ammonium diuranate content was measured by infrared absorption to be 25% ± 1% (Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980). Solvents The compositions of the two biological fluid simulants used are compared in Table 1. Simulated lung fluid (SLF) (Kalkwarf, 1979; Dennis, Blauer and Kent, 1981) was chosen to simulate the composition [ ] of lung fluid as closely as practical (Moss, 1979). Simulated blood serum ultrafiltrate (SUF) (Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980) was chosen because of previous successful efforts to model human urinary excretion of inhaled plutonium aerosols (Kanapilly Raabe and Boyd, 1974) and the dissolution rate of 241Am02 in Beagle dogs (Mewhinney and Griffith, 1981). Major differences are that simulated lung fluid contains Mg2+ and a higher Ca2+ concentration than SUF and that SUF contains ammonium ion. Both solvents include protein substitutes; acetate is used in SLF, while amino acids are used in SUF. Both solvents include phosphate but the chelating agent diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) is included in SUF to prevent possible formation of insoluble uranyl phosphate precipitates that would result in an underestimation of solubility. In addition to the above solvents, modified solvent compositions were prepared to investigate the role of specific salts in yellowcake dissolution studies. Solutions of SUF (Table 1) were prepared without DTPA (SUF-DTPA) and without amino acids (SUF-amino acids). No solution excluded both DTPA and amino acids. An incremental-analysis-based stope design and cutoff grade calculation method was developed for an underground metal mine project. Traditional stope design methods are typically very time consuming and lack consistency and accuracy by manually drawing stope shapes. For quick reserve calculation and economic analysis, a new method named "3D incremental analysis based stope design" was created for mine-wide stope designs. The key idea of this method is to replace engineers' manual checking of each incremental ring with one calculation of all the rings, and to build the final stope shape with the maximum values. This process was realized through a 3D ring grid setup and proper naming conventions for rapid calculations. With this unique but practical method, multiple options for a mine design were completed within a short time before the final selection of optimal cutoff grade and best stope designs for the project.

The Schaffer linear kimberlite complex and Aultman kimberlite diatremes comprise a major part of the State Line kimberlite district of Colorado and Wyoming, which encompasses approximately 200 sq mi (500 km2). The district is located along the eastern flank of the northern Front Range and is underlain prin- cipally by Precambrian granites (approx. 1.4 b.y.) which have been intruded into an older (approx. 1.75 b.y.) metamorphic complex. The kimberlite occurrences are Devonian in age and are related to older Precambrian linear structures. The Schaffer kimberlite complex is a dike or fissure system with enlargements or blows developed at the intersections of cross faults; the two Aultman occurrences are diatremes. Kimberlite within the Schaffer complex is predominately grey to green phlogopite-calcite kimberlite breccia and tuffisitic breccia. Carbonate is abundant in some phases. Inclusions of host granite are common and locally abundant. Upper mantle peridotite, pyroxenite, and eclogite and lower crustal granulite xenoliths are present at many localities. Four phases of tuffisitic kimberlite breccia occur in the Aultman diatremes. These breccias are characterized by high carbonate and serpentine contents. Xenoliths of upper crustal granite, lower crustal granulite, and upper mantle assemblages are abundant locally. Lower Paleozoic sedimentary rock xenoliths are also abundant in the Aultman diatremes but are absent in kimberlite of the Schaffer complex. From 1979 through September 1982, Cominco American, Inc., conducted geologic mapping, petrographic studies, geophysical surveys, geochemical surveys, and auger drilling in the Schaffer-Aultman project area as part of an extensive evaluation program of kimberlite occurrences. Forty bulk samples (approx. 8,000 metric tons) were excavated from the occurrences and then were processed for diamonds at Cominco American's heavy media separation and diamond recovery test plant at Fort Collins, Colorado. Indicated grades from the Schaffer and Aultman kimberlites range from approximately 0.5-1.0 carat per 100 metric tons and as such, the occurrences do not appear to approach economic viability at this time.

Lack of visibility from cabs of the large haulage trucks used in open-pit mines has become a serious safety problem. This Anaconda research program was conducted to develop a low-cost system for alerting haulage truck operators of the presence of small vehicles in their blind areas. Several systems, developed and tested to help solve this problem, are summarized and evaluated in this paper. As the size of the haulage trucks used in large open-pit mines has increased, so have the blind areas. Mine utility vehicles, pickup tucks and cars become concealed within these blind areas and, thus, become a serious safety hazard. Figure 1 shows the typical blind areas of a 150-ton haulage truck. The areas of greatest concern are those at the rear center and front right corner of the truck. It is within these areas of "no visibility" that numerous small vehicles over the years have been crushed by the large haulage trucks at various mine sites. Although the occupants in most instances, have escaped the vehicle before it was destroyed, injuries and deaths have occurred. The accidents, in most cases, were attributed to negligence or carelessness on the part of the driver of the smaller vehicle, but the problem of limited visibility still exists, and a solution is needed.

Since time immemorial, Mother Nature has been transporting slurries with both air and water serving as the carrier medium. Consider for example the formation of the continental shelves off our coast lines which are being formed by rivers emptying erroded land surface and depositing it into bays and gulfs. As the erosion processes take place, the fines are suspended in water which flows in streams and rivers and deposits where the velocity of the flow reduces sufficiently to allow the fines to settle out. The same process in some crude form is provided when one hoses his driveway or patio and moves dirt so as to provide a cleaning action. These examples illustrate rather crudely how the formation of slurries allows for the transport of solids. In recent years, this mechanism has become fairly well understood and slurry pipelining of many materials is now a vivid reality. The movement of liquids in pipelines necessarily occasions the use of pumps for the purpose. Those of us who have had some rub with the petroleum industry are familiar with the transport of solids through mud pumps and cementing and fracturing pumps where the movement of slurries is an everyday matter. In the drilling of an oil well the circulating fluid utilized to remove chips which are cut by a drill bit from holes drilled deep in the earth is called drilling mud. This substance contrary to what the name might imply is usually a fairly sophisticated material designed to develop certain characteristics which are desirable in the drilling process. The particles which have been cut by the drill bit are suspended in the moving column of fluid and brought to the surface and deposited. The separation of the cuttings from the drilling fluids is accomplished by the use of shaker screens and settling pits. However, it is impractical to remove the fines completely from the drilling fluid and as a result they are pumped through the mud pumps back into the circulatory stream.

The thermal conductivity of rock surrounding the airway is one of the most important thermal properties for estimating strata heat transfer into the mine air and for designing the air-cooling strategies. Several laboratory methods are available for the determination of thermal conductivity; however, most of them are complex and cumbersome. The present study explains the working principle of Lee’s apparatus which is relatively simple, easy to fabricate and use, and provides consistent results. In the present study, thermal conductivities of sandstone cores obtained from an Indian coal mine are determined using Lee’s apparatus. An approach is discussed for determining the temperature gradient of sandstone specimens while cooling and used for calculating thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity of different sandstone specimens attains values between 2.37 and 2.59 W m− 1 °C−1. For different sandstone cores obtained from the field, properties including specific gravity, specific heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and porosity, along with thermal conductivity, are determined and highlighted in this study.

Knight Piésold and Co. hosted its annual roundtable discussion on March 17, 2011 at the Stockman Hotel and Casino in Elko, NV. The theme for Roundtable 2011 was, ?High density tailings, paste, and filtered tailings,? although the topic may well have been subtitled, ?Don?t prematurely rule out any technologies before they are given their day in court.? Bryan Ulrich, Knight Piésold?s local representative, as well as Tom Kerr from Knight Piésold?s office in Denver, CO, were on hand to help facilitate the discussion. Ulrich and Kerr are senior vice president and president of Knight Piésold?s U.S. practice, respectively. The event played host to more than 30 attendees from several western states. Attendees included personnel from a dozen mining properties and various corporate offices. There were also attendees from manufacturing and specialist consulting firms who have been providing services to various high-density tailings, paste and filtered tailings operations worldwide. It may be noted that the term ?filtered tailings? is used in this discussion. Alternative terms, such as ?dry stack? or ?dewatered tailings,? should be avoided whenever possible, as such terms tend to give a false sense about the nature of the material since these materials typically still retain a significant amount of moisture.

This article reviews the production trends of industrial minerals since 2000 for Texas, the leading U.S. producing state of industrial minerals with a total value of $5.2 billion in 2017, equivalent to 6.9 percent of all U.S. minerals value. Most current Texas industrial-mineral value comes from the production of cement, crushed stone, industrial sand, and construction sand and gravel. Construction material consumption is concentrated in the 25 metropolitan areas of the state, with production of industrial minerals in nearby counties. With Texas’ population projected to reach 50 million by 2050, continuing in-state development and production of industrial minerals will be required to meet in-state and regional demand. Texas’ most rapidly growing production of industrial minerals is industrial sand to supply proppants for multiple unconventional petroleum plays. Texas’ favorable geology and economic factors provide opportunities for the identification and development of new industrial-mineral production sites. Repurposing of former industrial-mineral production sites for post-production development likely will increase as efficient land use evolves. Understanding the geologic, economic and societal framework of industrial-mineral resources will facilitate more informed decisions about the complex issues that the region will face, including effects of sea-level rise on coastal infrastructure.

The aim of this study was to investigate desulfurization and de-ashing of a mixture of subbituminous coal and gangue minerals by the agglomeration method. For this purpose, experimental studies were conducted on a mixture containing subbituminous coal, pyrite, quartz and calcite. The effects of some parameters that markedly influence the effectiveness of selective oil agglomeration, such as solid concentration, pH, bridging liquid type and concentration, and depressant type and amount, were investigated. Agglomeration results showed that the usage of various depressants (Na2SiO3, FeCI3, corn starch, wheat starch) in the agglomeration medium has a positive effect on the reduction of ash and total sulfur content of agglomerates. It was found that an agglomerate product containing 3.03% total sulfur and 25.01% ash with a total sulfur reduction of 56.71% was obtained from a feed that contained 7% total sulfur and 43.58% ash when FeCI3 was used in the agglomeration medium. Mine planners are challenged to hold two seemingly opposing objectives: maximizing the mine?s operational efficiency while minimizing post-closure impacts. One of the most effective approaches to meet these objectives is to plan for mine closure from the start. Mine closure is typically viewed as the process that happens in the period of time when the operational stage of a mine is ending and the final decommissioning and mine rehabilitation is being undertaken. In reality, it is a continuous series of activities that begins with preplanning prior to the project?s design and construction and ends when long-term site stability is achieved and a self-sustaining ecosystem is established. Putting this model into practice as early as possible can significantly reduce the financial burden of mine closure and rehabilitation.

"Float dust deposits in coal mine return airways pose a risk in the event of a methane ignition. Controlling airborne dust prior to deposition in the return would make current rock dusting practices more effective and reduce risks of coal dust-fueled explosions. The goal of this NIOSH study is to determine the potential of open-air water sprays to reduce concentrations of airborne float coal dust (<75 µm diameter) in longwall face airstreams. This study evaluated unconfined water sprays in a featureless tunnel ventilated at a typical longwall face velocity. Experiments were conducted for two nozzle orientations and two water pressures for hollow cone, full cone, flat fan, air atomizing, and hydraulic atomizing spray nozzles. Gravimetric samples show that airborne float dust removal efficiencies averaged 19.6 percent for all sprays under all conditions. The results indicate that the preferred spray nozzle is operated at high fluid pressures to produce smaller droplets and move more air. These findings can be used to select sprays and design spray arrays to control airborne float dust over the entire longwall ventilated opening. INTRODUCTION Coal mining processes produce airborne dust that naturally deposits on the floor, roof, and ribs of mine airways. These fine dust particles, termed float coal dust when smaller than 75 microns in diameter, are deposited in return entries of coal mines and can be re-entrained by pressure waves induced by methane-air explosions (Rice et al., 1911; Nagy, 1981; NIOSH, 2006). These particles are also those most likely to participate in coal dust-fueled explosions, which can potentiate and propagate explosions resulting in extensive damage. In order to meet compliance requirements of at least 80 percent incombustible content in the composition of material deposited in mine entries (CFR, 2016), coal mines apply an inerting agent, specifically, rock dust (Harris et al., 2009). Should methane be present in the mine atmosphere, the required fraction of incombustible content is further increased by 0.4 percent for each 0.1 percent methane. The removal of airborne float coal dust (AFCD) prior to deposition is an approach intended to make current rock dusting practices more effective by increasing the proportion of inert material to combustible material, resulting in a lower risk of coal dust-fueled explosions. Water sprays are both effective and widely accepted as a method for controlling underground coal mine dust. In fact, water sprays are considered to be the most economical and technically feasible means of reducing dust concentrations in underground coal mines (Courtney and Cheng, 1977; Barker and Humphreys, 1996). Sprays are used in several ways to control dust in mining processes: inhibiting dust formation, immobilizing dust to prevent it from becoming airborne, and capturing airborne dust (Cheng, 1973). Reductions in airborne dust concentrations have frequently been attributed to inertial impaction between water droplets and dust particles, forming larger agglomerates which then quickly precipitate out of the airstream (McPherson, 1993). Inertial impaction activity is generally accepted as the major capture mechanism for airborne particles larger than 0.5 µm in diameter. It is this mechanism that is evaluated in this study."

Colorado has recorded more than 100 years of industrial mineral production. Much of the state&apos;s history, culture, and economy is based in mining, but the industrial minerals and construction materials comprising the nonmetallics sector of the industry very often are overlooked or overshadowed by mineral fuels and the metals. Indeed, many of these materials find use in seemingly unimportant industrial applications essential to our economy and life style and yet are not so recognized by the consumer. Unlike many other mineral resources, the numerous industrial minerals occur in many different and often exotic geologic environments, some of which are characteristic only of the western states. In Colorado only a few of these minerals have continued production through the years; many saw only "boom" periods or other critical times of need, such as the world wars. The changing needs and demands of our society in the 1980s will stimulate yet another era of intensive activity in our industrial minerals storehouse. Researchers are finding new uses and applications for these materials in dealing with the energy crisis and fuel shortages, the need to develop domestic mineral reserves of all kinds, and the goals of reuse and recycling. Some of Colorado&apos;s little-used and unused industrial minerals hold extraordinary promise in solving some of these problems on the regional and national levels. In this paper we will look at the history of development of Colorado&apos;s more prominent nonmetallics and especially at current research on and future potential of several other commodities among which Colorado contains the largest known reserves.

There continues to be a certain magic attached to the word "Automation". When properly planned for, engineered, installed, and operated, the magic truly does take place - witness certain publicized mineral processing, metallurgical, and chemical plants. They operate successfully with few people, instead of previous dozens as in similar facilities not automated. Production quality has improved. Maintenance costs have been lowered. When such welcome results are achieved, it&apos;s proved to be a function of method and procedure in establishing criteria for choosing the intelligence and control systems followed by skilled choice of the specific elements used. The criteria, the bases for decision, are associated with design, construction, startup, operations, and maintenance. How to go about automating any process system to achieve the optimum profit depends on attention to all those aspects of a project. None of them can be forgotten if maximum satisfaction is to be gained. Control loops that look wonderful on an equipment. Piping, and Instrumentation diagram can suddenly turn into costly and. annoying problems in the field if there has been too little coordination of design. Panel boards that are literally works of art just before startup can become the largest of white elephants if an air header is inadequately sized and the pneumatic control circuits are sluggish. Conveyor belt replacement costs can skyrocket if a critical discharge chute far away from immediate operator attention lacks a simple yet effective clog-chute switch. Planning, execution, and followup of the work, the skills, and function of-the automating material can make any new project a success. An integrated owner contractor, producer-engineer approach is the key.

The industrial practice of concentration of solids and production of clear solution by gravity sedimentation is an old technology. Through the years, many devices have been designed and built to aid this process. One of the more significant developments was a revolving rake mechanism to convey settled material to a central discharge point of a circular tank, patented in 1907(1). In recent years, clarification systems employing parallel inclined plates have appeared on the market; the original device utilizing this principle was patented in 1886(2). Numerous other methods have been invented, tested, discarded and sometimes re-invented, all with the specific intention of improving the capacity of a particular settling area. Sedimentation theory, as expressed in Stokes&apos; Law, shows that the rate of settling of a particle is directly proportional to the difference in density between the particle and the surrounding liquid and, more significantly, proportional to the square of the particle diameter. Anything that can increase the latter will greatly assist sedimentation and, as a result, flocculation always has been an integral part of sedimentation. Most materials suspended in aqueous media are naturally flocculent to some degree and, hence, are readily concentrated by sedimentation, although sometimes very slowly.

This paper describes a commercial installation of a sophisticated instrumentation and control system designed to maximize the performance of heavy medium cyclones. Samples of plant feed and its products were collected and analyzed for ash content so that measures of efficiency could be determined for plant operation under (1) manual control and (2) automatic (computer) control. The heavy medium cyclone control strategy and its digital computer implementation are discussed in detail. The sample results are analyzed and the economic benefits of automatic control are discussed. Results from the initial data sets quantify the economic benefits of automatic closed-loop control; viz, increased recovery and reduced clean coal variability have been clearly demonstrated.

The effect of anions such as sulfate, chloride, and nitrate on the solubility of rare earth element-bearing phosphates and fluorocarbonates has been examined using relevant thermodynamic data. The study has found that these anions have significant influences on the overall dissolution of rare earth elements (REEs) from various sources in the aqueous media. The thermodynamic calculations in this study have indicated that the speciation of REEs with the anions tends to increase the overall solubility of the REE-bearing minerals. However, in some cases, strong precipitation of REEs with some of these anions causes an adverse effect on the solubility of these elements. It has been found that sulfate ion has the most pronounced effect on the solubility compared to nitrate and chloride, in which the latter two acids exhibited almost identical results. The calculated results have indicated that REE-oxide (hydrated) is the easiest compound to dissolve, followed by carbonate, phosphate, fluoride, sulfate, fluoro-carbonate, and oxalate in that order.

"As part of the new 2nd Ave Subway Project, an existing tunnel constructed in the 1970’s will be connected to the new subway and used as new running tunnels. The existing tunnel had to be modified to comply with newer structural and fire life safety codes and to be connected to the new cut and cover station at 96th St. This paper will discuss the complexities of tying an existing tunnel constructed over 40 years ago into the new station and allowing for movements due to the unloading of the existing tunnel and the differential settlement of the two structures during both the construction and permanent condition. Topics that will be discussed include structural analysis, ground improvement techniques, selection of support of excavation walls, working in contaminated soil and instrumentation and monitoring of the structures. It will also cover retrofitting the tunnel to comply with updated Fire/Life/Safety requirements. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Second Avenue Subway (SAS) will be the first major expansion of New York’s subway system in over 50 years. To be constructed in four phases, it will run from 125th St. in Harlem to Hanover Square in the Financial District (see Figure 1). For most of its length, the alignment is directly under the Second Avenue roadway."

"Molybdenum recovery by solvent extraction has gained interest partly due to advances in concentrate leach technology. Historically, both molybdenum and rhenium have been produced using amine-based extractants with the ability to co-extract both metals. Alternatively, a phosphinic acid-based extractant (CYANEX® 600) can be used depending on the flow sheet. CYANEX® 600 selectively extracts Mo leaving Re in the raffinate, which is a valuable feature in plants which require rejection of the rhenium from the molybdenum circuit. CYANEX® 600 piloting results are reviewed and compared to commercial experiences with an amine-based extractant. INTRODUCTION Molybdenum is most commonly found as molybdenite (MoS2) in primary porphyry deposits (about 59% of global reserves) and copper porphyries (about 39% of molybdenum reserves)[1]. Recovery from molybdenite traditionally involves flotation (concentrates typically containing 85 – 95% MoS2) followed by roasting to produce MoO3. Solvent extraction is also used to recover molybdenum from acidic aqueous solutions resulting from scrubbing of roaster and smelter off gasses and leaching of molybdenite (uranium ores). Molybdenum is also frequently found in low concentrations in copper leach inventories[2]. More recently, pressure oxidation has gained interest to treat molybdenite concentrates. Molybdenum Chemistry The chemistry of molybdenum is complex with a series of extractable species existing dependent on the pH and oxidation state as shown in Figure 1.Under strongly basic conditions, molybdenum primarily exists as MoO42- while under strongly acidic conditions MoO22+ becomes the predominant species. In between, a number of isopolymolybdates such as Mo7O246- and Mo8O264- are dominant. Equations (1) – (3) demonstrate some of the proposed molybdenum equilibrium reactions[1]."
