"Uncertainty exists in ultimate-pit limits due to geologic variation and unpredictable economic landscapes. In this work, we show how this uncertainty affects the ultimate pit and how it can be analyzed to improve the mine planning process. A stochastic framework using geostatistical simulation and parametric analysis was used to model the effects of geologic and economic variations on ultimate-pit limits and overall project economics. This analysis was made possible by a new pit optimization implementation that can be automated and set up to calculate ultimate pits for hundreds of different scenarios in a matter of hours. Quantifying ultimate-pit uncertainty early in the mine planning process allows mining engineers to make informed decisions regarding infrastructure placement and to mitigate the possibility of incurring substantial costs to relocate critical mine facilities. En este trabajo les mostramos como esta incertidumbre afecta el pit final y como puede ser analizada para mejorar el proceso de planificación de la mina. Se usó un marco estocástico con simulación geoestadística de análisis paramétrico con el fin de poder hace la modelación de los efectos de las variaciones geológicas y económicas en los límites de pit finales y proyectos económicos en general. Este análisis fue posible gracias a una nueva implementación de optimización de pits que puede ser automatizada y configurada para calcular pits finales para cientos de escenarios diferentes en cuestión de horas. The application and use of steel fibre reinforced concrete in precast tunnel lining design is a growing trend due to its advantages in performance over plain concrete, and ease of manufacture compared to traditionally reinforced concrete. However, the design process and performance characteristics of the material are poorly served by current codes and standards. This paper provides some basic design guidance for segmental linings, and compares the material properties for the different material options. A typical example is considered to compare the possible results of lining arrangement and thicknesses for a plain, reinforced, and fibre reinforced design solution.

The Calico area lies within the Walker Lane fault zone, six miles north of Schurz, Nevada. The mineralized area is overlain by a thick section of Tertiary tuffs and ash-flows, that have been intruded by a series of andesite plug, dikes, and sills. The pre-Tertiary rocks outcrops only in two areas at one to two miles distance from the drilling areas. Underlying the volcanics are sediments ranging from siltstones, sandstone, calcareous shales, to carbonates of the Luning sequence. These have been intruded by one or more phaneritic intrusives ranging in composition from quartz diorite to quartz monzonite, with the development of a skarn zone on the south flank that contains extensive mineralization consisting of magnetite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and chalcopytite, with traces of sphalerite, galena, and molybdenite. The magnetite, pyrrhotite, and part of the pyrite appears to be contemporaneous with the skarn, while, part of the chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, molybdenite, quartz, and calcite, occurs as minute veinlets cutting the other minerals. This later mineralization may be associated with a late stage of the same sequence, or possibly associated with another intrusive to the southwest. Geophysical work has consisted of aerial magnetics, ground magnetics, gravity, seismic, and induced polarization surveys. Preliminary induced polarization surveys indicated anomalies at depth, both over the magnetic anomaly and to the northwest. Subsequent IP work confirmed this earlier anomaly, and drilling disclosed extensive mineralization at depths of 400 feet on the northwest end and over 1,000 feet to the southeast.

Industrial minerals play a central and dual role in the sustainable development (SD) of natural resources. Over the past decade the mining industry has increasingly focused on sustainably extracting and processing industrial minerals. This trend has been driven by higher energy costs, diminishing water resources and sensitivity towards environmental stewardship. Industrial minerals have been used throughout human history as low cost, naturally occurring, materials. Today they are critical components of recycled packaging, energy efficient building materials, light weight paper coatings, and other products critical to the responsible utilization of global resources. As industrial minerals become more widely used in ?green? products, mining companies have established best practices for the sustainable management of industrial minerals mining and processing. These management practices include reducing energy consumption, minimizing water usage, increasing waste recovery through recycling and process optimization, and maximizing the amount of ore extracted per acre of disturbed land. With the commitment to SD principles, quantitative methods for objectively measuring SD performance have become increasingly important. Measuring sustainability impact is a valuable tool for effectively applying SD principles and for making choices that balance sustainable development against other business objectives. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND MINING Sustainable development is a term that has become a common part of our lexicon; however, it has multiple meanings and interpretations leading to a sometimes confusing and contradictory array of definitions. The absence of a single, precise definition reflects the fact that SD is a broad concept or paradigm that offers guiding principles as opposed to a specific set of criteria or regulations enforceable by government or other oversight agencies. While a principle based conceptual approach allows businesses to broadly apply SD practices that are tailored to their specific situation, it has also led the public to sometimes view voluntary corporate SD programs with a degree of skepticism (Walker and Howard 2002). This is particularly true in the mining industry. One reason for this skepticism is that the relationship between SD and mining is misunderstood and to many, sustainably developing non-renewable mineral resources is a contradiction (Rajaram et al. 2005). However, this view takes a very narrow interpretation of the tenets of SD. The second is that mining carries a legacy of poor environmental stewardship that does not accurately reflect current corporate environmental practices Many minerals companies have adopted the Brundtland Comission?s definition of SD (United Nations 1987): ?? development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs?. This definition is very broad and can be interpreted in a number of ways. It provides a general context for sustainable development and is not intended to provide detailed guidelines addressing specific aspects of sustainable development. To fill this gap the following SD principles were drafted by the international minerals community in 2003 (ICMM 2003): 1. Implement and maintain ethical business practices and sound systems of corporate governance. 2. Integrate sustainable development considerations within the corporate decision-making process. 3. Uphold fundamental human rights and respect cultures, customs and values in dealings with employees and others who are affected by our activities. 4. Implement risk management strategies based on valid data and sound science. 5. Seek continual improvement of our health and safety performance. 6. Seek continual improvement of our environmental performance. 7. Contribute to conservation of biodiversity and integrated approaches to land use planning. 8. Facilitate and encourage responsible product design, use, re-use, recycling and disposal of our products. 9. Contribute to the social, economic and institutional development of the communities in which we operate. 10. Implement effective and transparent engagement, communication and independently verified reporting arrangements with our stakeholders. These guidelines insure that SD concepts are applied equally across the industry while setting a clear performance standard and benchmark against which to evaluate success. By adopting these principles and issuing the Milos Statement (http://www.sdimi.org/milos_decl_October%206_2003.pdf), which provides a more detailed vision for integrating SD into everyday business operations, the minerals industry has embraced SD as a core corporate value. The unifying and holistic approach embodied in SD principles impacts the entire mine to market life cycle and addresses the economic, environmental and social consequences of mining. INDUSTRIAL MINERALS The world economy relies heavily on minerals; they are essential to economic prosperity and the quality of life. Industrial minerals are non-metallic, non-fuel minerals that provide the raw materials for a vast range of products used in most every aspect of daily life. They are mined and processed worldwide and they span the spectrum from relatively low value, high volume commodities (e.g. common clay, crushed stone) that are usually mined locally to high value, low volume specialty materials that are sourced from unique one of a kind deposits (e.g. barite, talc, mica). High volume commodity mining operations are often located near the end use market which, in most cases, means areas of high population density where construction and other urban activities drive demand. In these situations the strict adherence to SD principles is particularly critical as these are highly visible operations that must meet the public?s demand for good corporate citizenship. These operations are similar to chemical or other manufacturing facilities that operate near population centers. "The Chatham Rock Phosphorite project is situated 450 km east of New Zealand at approximately 350 to 450 m water depth. The deposit occurs as a thin layer of phosphatebearing glauconitic sand at the surface of the sea floor and has a thicknesses typically ranging from 0 to 1 m. The sand layer consists of mainly silt and sand-sized sediments, with phosphatised chalk nodules up to 15 cm in diameter. Phosphate nodules were first discovered on the Chatham Rise in the 1950s by a New Zealand Government survey. During the 1960s to 1980s several private and government sponsored cruises explored the Chatham Rise and surrounding seafloor area. A total of 1174 samples were collected over a 600 km2 area with the majority of the samples collected using a pneumatic -or large Van Veen-style grab-sampler.Since acquiring the licence in 2010, Chatham Rock Phosphate Limited has conducted six cruises in two programs in the Project area. A total of 261 samples were collected using a Van Veen grab, box core and grab samples.Sample quality and QA/QC measures varied considerably between the cruises and within each cruise. A critical part of the assessment of the data collected in the Project area was to determine what quality thresholds to use to allow or disallow data to enter into the estimation process. As part of the data verification process, the relative and absolute quality of the data was assessed in as much detail as practically possible. The best samples were those that were collected using the pneumatic grab, sampled the full sand horizon, had a small location survey error and had no other apparent data ambiguities. This paper describes the challenges for mineral resource estimation for an unconventional style of mineralisation using unconventional sampling techniques."

In a world of technology and electronic communication, it is easy to forget what engineers do best with a problem: sitting around a table, exchanging views and ideas with sketches and respecting everyone?s view. This was the approach adopted in the project to arrive at a solution for the cross passage opening sup-port for the Seattle University Link Extension. Schedule and space constraints usually impede concurrent cross passage excavation and tunnel boring machine (TBM) operation. And where the space is constrained, opening support solutions that maximize available cross sections are of great benefit. While there are a number of solutions that minimize space, some of these solutions can require expensive steelwork and extensive drilling and fixing. However, following a detailed round-the-table discussion of the options and constraints, it was identified that a shotcrete shell would not only limit obstruction of the space during installation, but also permit easy installation, particularly around services, and avoid costly steelwork and drilling and fixing.

Research to evaluate possible metrics for predicting dredgeability of compact aggregates, by hydraulically actuated clamshell dredges, shows work done by the pistons as a viable metric. Analysis of field data shows that there is a low, positive, correlation between cycle time (CT) and work done. If this correlation exists, then CT has to be considered an independent variable affecting work done during dredgeability assessment. Further research is required to elucidate the relationship between CT and work done during dredging. The objective of this paper is to test the hypothesis that work done during dredging increases with increasing CT. Kinematics and dynamics of the hydraulic clamshell were modeled and implemented in Simulink® in MATLAB. The model was validated using field data. The model was then used to test the research hypothesis. The results show that work done increases with increasing CT. This work confirms that work done during dredging increases with increasing CT. This result indicates that though an operator can increase the CT to deal with difficult digging, inputting unduly high CTs results in higher energy consumption during dredging.

A laboratory apparatus (shield dust simulator) was designed and constructed to simulate the dust generated during the advance of longwall hydraulic roof supports, or shields. The objective of the study was to develop a tool that could be used to test the hypothesis that foam applied to a mine roof prior to a shield advance could be used to reduce the respirable dust generated during shield advances. This paper will outline the design parameters for the development of the system, as well as describe baseline testing of coal and limestone dust. Results show the average instantaneous respirable dust concentrations that occurred during simulated shield advance. Confidence intervals were calculated from the instantaneous respirable dust data to determine the repeatability of the data produced by the device. INTRODUCTION During longwall mining, miners can be exposed to respirable dust that is generated during the advance of hydraulic roof supports or shields. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers have conducted numerous surveys of longwall mining operations, benchmarking the operating practices and dust control measures in use. It has been determined that the shields are responsible for 27% of the respirable dust that is generated on the longwall face [1]. The dust generated by the shield advances ranks second, next to the longwall shearer which is accountable for 43% of the respirable dust generated on the longwall face. The respirable dust generated during the advance of the shields can be a significant contributor to the respirable dust exposure of the mining personnel operating at the longwall face, especially since some of this dust is generated in the walkway. Control systems designed to reduce the dust levels generated during the shield advance have the potential to greatly reduce the respirable dust exposures of the personnel downwind of these activities. One control technology to decrease the dust generated by the shield advances would be to apply a layer of foam to the forward shield-roof interface prior to the shield advance [2]. The blanketed layer of foam would interact with the material located on the top of the shield during the advance, preventing a portion of that dust from becoming entrained in the mine air. This layer of foam would be applied using a foaming nozzle located on the longwall shearer body that would spray foam on the roof surface as the shearer passed. Substantial laboratory work has been completed to determine the feasibility of this type of foam application. NIOSH engineers have classified the various characteristics of foaming agents, using foam expansion ratio and drainage as important properties, as well as developed the mechanical systems required to apply the foam safely to the mine roof [2, 3]. The construction of an apparatus that could simulate the mechanical interaction between the dust-laden shield top and mine roof was necessary to adequately test the hypothesis that foam could be an appropriate control. A team of engineers designed and constructed a shield dust simulator system allowing for in-house testing prior to a full-scale field investigation.

A comprehensive study of the environmental conditions of the area affected by the Colfax and Cheswick Power Stations is of extreme importance to Duquesne Light Company. The residents in the valley where the two plants are located have complained for many years about the emissions from the Colfax Plant which is of the 1920 to 1930 vintage and which has a capability of generating approxi¬mately 200 Mw. They were extremely happy to hear that the Company had plans for shutting it down, however, they were extremely unhappy to hear that we were planning to build another even larger one to take its place in the same vicinity, namely the Cheswick Plant with a capability of 570 Mw. They had visions of a plant twice the size of the Colfax Plant and belching out twice as much smoke. A few of the citizens from that area were most vehement at the public hearings that were held by the Allegheny County Air Pollution Bureau for obtaining an installation permit. With two power plants already existing in that area (Duquesne Light Company's Colfax Plant and West Penn Power's Springdale Plant), the primary concern of the Allegheny County Air Pollution Control Bureau was that the Cheswick Station might increase air pollution levels beyond what they considered to be dangerous limits. It became very evident that the Allegheny County Air Pollution Control Bureau would be extremely reluctant to grant installation and operating permits unless they were satisfied that the new plant would not increase local pollution levels and that we were taking sufficient steps to monitor the emissions from our plants and also the ambient air in the general area. We concluded that an extensive air pollution monitoring program must be conducted in the area to determine the effects of the operation of our plants. An upsurge of interest in slurry pipelines to move coal from Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado to markets in the southwest, west, midwest and northwest has recently developed. Specific pipelines have been proposed to serve these markets; the routes of these lines are depicted in Exhibit I. It is, therefore, timely to discuss some technical aspects of the terminal facilities for these western coal pipelines. The discussion will be based on experience with the Ohio and Black Mesa pipelines as well as detailed planning and testing for a proposed 1,000-mile system from Wyoming to the middle south area. The economics of the pipeline terminal processes are heavily depend¬ent on site, type of process used, and other specifics of the situation. In 2009 the Gold Quarry open pit mine, located 11 km northwest of Carlin, Nevada, USA, experienced multiple large-scale slope instabilities of the upper east highwall that reduced gold ore extraction for nearly 18 months. The slope instabilities occurred within a weak, consolidated sedimentary sequence that exhibits strength characteristics that are transitional between soil and rock. Instability initiated as mining exposed the lower clay-rich sub-units of the Carlin Formation (Fm.). This deformation created preferential flow paths that allowed groundwater from the upper sandy sub-units to infiltrate low permeability clay-rich sub-units, thereby enhancing deformation of the slope toe which in turn destabilized the upper portion of the highwall. The outcome was a 160 m high slope instability that had a lateral run-out of 850 m. The effort to return the pit to ore production required both the geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations and the preliminary remediation mining activity to be concurrent. This approach required the development of detailed safety procedures and a requirement to modify the remediation design as new results were obtained. An initial challenge was to mitigate a near vertical, 90 m headscarp with blast induced, localized slope failures. Back-analyses applying numerical modeling indicated that the failure surface did not coincide with initial interpretations based on field observations; drilling results eventually confirmed this alternative failure geometry. The final remediation design incorporated shallower slope geometries and an approximately 3 Mt buttress along the base of the Carlin Formation and bedrock contact to reinforce the lower clay-rich sub-units. The outcome is a stable highwall within the Carlin Fm. following nearly ten years of repeated slope instability, and an example of the necessity to conduct appropriate geotechnical and hydrogeological studies during the early stages of a new layback evaluation or new open pit development.

In situ, or in-place leaching is concerned with the extraction of metals from natural mineral disseminations without removal from their geologic location which, in many cases, amounts to the reversal of the deposition process accompanied by a presumed increase in velocity of the processes, if the project is to be profitable. Solution mining processes involve removal of minerals such as sulfur, common salt, and potash, generally leaving cavernous voids, in contrast to in situ leaching which term is applied to the selective dissolution of a mineral from its gangue without sensible disturbance of the formation. Where such a process can be operated, the advantages are manifold and have been so recognized by miners from the earliest days of mining. Recent technological developments have encouraged a reassessment of the status of in situ leaching, and it now appears possible to extend the application of the method from a few isolated special situations to many uranium and copper deposits. Anaconda's interest in the techniques stems from long experience with vat and heap leaching, 'dump leaching, and natural leach activities associated with several established mines. Increasing activity through-out the industry has been noted, particularly in leaching low grade pillars and the peripheral zones of operating mines, often by the introduction of leach solutions via boreholes drilled from surface. Reactivation of dormant mines] using similar techniques has been successful. Over the long term, environmental improvement activity will lead to excess sulfuric acid production, even to a disposal problem. The cost of leach solutions and reagents must be reexamined in this light. 1. INTRODUCTION For Europe the Arlberg road tunnel signifies the elimination of the largest traffic barrier between Bucharest and Paris in the east-west transversal. Apart from that the tunnel will serve the feeder system to the two north-south links Ulm - Milano, and the Brenner motorway, and links the Inntal and the Rheintal motorways closer together.. Thus, the supraregional road system carrying traffic through the Tyrol and Vorarlberg will considerably be emproved by the Arlberg road tunnel. 2. THE PROJECT The 16.1 km contract section of expressway S 16 includes a ramp section of approximately 2.6 km, the access points at St.Anton and at Langen, and the main 13.98 km section of the road tunnel. This section cuts the link between St.Anton and Langen by 3.7 km, and saves 475 m in altitude. The Arlberg road tunnel is planned to have two tubes with two lanes each. In the first stage the southern tube was under construction. Its traffic capacity is 1,800 car units per hour. The tunnel has a cross section of 9o to 103 m2. The sloping gradients are by 1.3o and 1.67 per cent. Fresh air is supplied and used air removed through a ventilation system, fed at the portals and through two vertical ventilation shafts. One of them, at Maienwasen, is 222 m deep, its cross section 66.5 m2. The diameter in clear is 8.32 m. The vertical shaft Albona is 736 m deep, the diameter in clear is 7.37 m. Results for the first underground test of the ventilated drum in a U.S. coal mine are presented. Tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines through a contract research program with Foster-Miller, Inc., to evaluate dust control effectiveness in a western mine and for gas control in a full scale laboratory facility. The ventilated drum is designed to reduce the amount of dust from cutting by drawing dust-laden air from the cutting zone through twelve water- powered "dust capture" tubes built into the shell of the shearer drum. High pressure water up to 1 12.48 kg per cm2 (1,600 psig), released from sprays, induces maximum airflow of 1.89 m3/sec (4,000 cfm) from the face side of the drum and provides cleaning for respirable dust and improved methane dispersion. At the gob side of the drum a deflector plate, attached to the cowl arm, turns the water spray and a proportion of the cleaned air back into the cutting zone. More than 50 ventilated drums have been installed to date in England, and their tests carried out on fixed height and single-ended ranging drum shearers have shown reductions in respirable dust of 60-80 pct, as compared with conventional wet cutting. INTRODUCTION Uranium mill tailings, by-products from the mining and milling of uranium oxide contain all decay products of uranium-238, uranium-235 and all the Th-232. The ore containing all daughter products of the parents U-238, U-235 and Th-232 is ground to approximately 50% under 200 mesh particle size and after extraction of uranium, the residue, described as tailings, is discharged into natural depressions confined by dams. These deposition sites are referred to as tailings ponds. Tailings ponds are located in two mining districts, Bancroft and Elliot Lake in the Province of Ontario, Canada. Some parts of tailings ponds are dry up to a depth of several meters, whereas other parts have a water table very close to the surface and still others are covered with water. The extent to which the daughters of uranium isotopes are in equilibrium with the parents U-238 and U-235 is dependent on the age of the deposit in which uranium occurs and the extent to which the decay products are removed by geochemical processes. In the mining district of Bancroft, the deposit is known to be approximately 1 billion years old, whereas in Elliot Lake, the deposit is considered to be approximately 2 billion years old. The ratio of radiogenic lead isotopes Pb-206 and Pb-207, can provide some estimates concerning the age of the deposits. If the tailings are not affected by geochemical processes, the tailings would contain all the daughters of the 4n+2 and 4n+3 series in equilibrium concentrations. The equilibrium activities of some members of the 4n+2 series are calculated in Table 1. [ ] The amount of radiogenic stable lead isotopes depends on the age of the ore deposits. If the deposit in each district is of the same age, a definite relationship is expected with respect to the activity of Pb-210 and the radiogenic stable isotopes. Approximately 33 million tons of the tailings have been deposited in the early 1960's, approximately 20 years ago. During this period of storage, the segregation of uranium daughters, like radium, the diffusion of gaseous product, Rn-222, and removal of precursors by geochemical processes, can cause dis-equilibrium. Earlier work concerned with the uptake of Ra-226 and Pb-210 by plants (Kalin and Sharma, 1981), indicated that the concentrations of Pb-210,in samples of the tailings taken, were lower than the expected equilibrium. The diffusion of radon from a variety of matrices has been studied (Tanner, 1964). It has been shown that the diffusion coefficient is dependent on the particle size in which its precursor is present, the moisture content and the surface conditions. The direct measurement of radon concentrations in the environment near the ponds is dependent on the metereological conditions. Kramer, Schroeder and Evans, 1964, have examined the variations in the concentration of radon near the ground level with respect to atmospheric variables, such as changes in barometric pressure, precipitation, wind velocities, thermal atmospheric instability. It is difficult to relate the total release of radon from the ponds to the atmosphere over an extended period. Our measurements of Pb-210 and total lead on tailings samples taken from 16 sites indicate that the ratios of the activity of Pb-210 to the mass of total lead can provide parameters which are helpful in the estimation of the total amount of radon and its decay products diffusing from the tailings ponds. In this paper, we present the results of measurements of activities of Ra-226, Pb-210 and total lead in samples from various ponds situated in both mining districts. The measurements were confined to samples taken at 0-25 cm depth from the surface.

Sydney Australia’s M5 East Motorway connects southwestern suburbs to the airport. Central to the project are twin 3.8 km roadway tunnels which are mostly driven through rock. In order to come up with the winning tender, the project team developed several unique approaches for tunnel excavation and support. The project’s flat roof with thin shotcrete lining, 20 m wide underground intersections, thixotropic-grout sheathed rockbolts and cablebolts, and new shotcrete testing methods all differ significantly from traditional concepts. This paper presents the design basis and construction methods used to achieve the 100-year design life required by the project’s owner.

"Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require underground coal mines to use refuge alternatives (RAs) to provide a breathable air environment for 96 hrs. One of the main concerns with the use of mobile RAs is the heat and humidity buildup inside an RA. The accumulation of heat and humidity can result in miners suffering heat stress or even death. MSHA regulations require that the apparent temperature in a fully occupied RA must not exceed 95°F. To investigate this issue, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted testing on a 23-person tent-type RA in its Experimental Mine (EM) in a test area that was isolated from the mine ventilation system. The test results showed that the average measured air temperature within the RA increased by 9.4°C (17°F) and the relative humidity (RH) approached 94 %RH. The test results were used to benchmark a thermal simulation model of the tested RA. The validated thermal simulation model predicted the average air temperature inside the RA at the end of 96 hours to within 0.6°C (1.0°F) of the average measured air temperature. INTRODUCTION If an accident occurs in an underground coal mine, miners who fail to escape from the mine can enter an RA for protection from adverse conditions, such as high carbon monoxide levels. One of the main concerns with the use of mobile RAs is the potentially adverse thermal environment inside an RA from the metabolic heat of the occupants and the heat released by the carbon dioxide (CO2) scrubbing system. Moreover, the humidity within the RA will increase through occupants’ respiration and perspiration and from the chemical reaction within the CO2 scrubbing system. The accumulation of heat and humidity can result in miners suffering heat stress, heat stroke, or even death. In its 2007 report to Congress, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) recommended that RAs should be designed to ensure that the internal apparent temperature (a temperature-humidity metric) in an occupied RA does not exceed 35°C (95°F). However, a standard method to determine compliance with this metric does not exist. The heat transfer process within and surrounding an RA is very complex, and is not easily defined analytically or experimentally. To investigate the related issues, OMSHR conducted heat and humidity testing on a 23-person tent-type RA in its Experimental Mine (EM) in a test area that was isolated from the mine ventilation system. During the testing, numerous parameters were measured: heat input to the chamber, the air temperature and relative humidity inside the RA, the air temperature in the mine, the mine strata temperatures versus depth, and the airflow inside and outside the chamber. The focus of this paper is on the temperature rise within an RA. TAITherm heat transfer analysis software was used to develop a thermal simulation model of the RA as it was tested in the mine, using the test results as the benchmark. Both sensible and latent heat were used in the test and the model."

Este capítulo revisa las etapas que deben seguirse desde el momento de considerar la molienda autógena en el desarrollo de un nuevo depósito de mineral o en la expansión de una planta existente, hasta la compra de un molino autógeno. En este caso el término autógeno incluye: semi-autógeno, molinos de pebbles secundarios y molino de bolos (trozos), así como los sistemas de molienda autógena total. También se han incluido las alternativas por vía húmeda y seca. Antes de programar el ensayo debe decidirse cuantas muestras brutas son requeridas para calcular propiamente las posibilidades de molienda autógena del depósito. También ha de tomarse la decisión, de como y donde deben tomarse las muestras, por ejemplo: planta piloto situada en el sitio de localización de la planta o en otro lugar establecido; molienda en húmedo y/o en seco....etc. En el mismo programa del ensayo se obtendrán ciertos datos fundamentales. Los ensayos deberán incluir un trabajo suficiente. para determinar cuál de las moliendas, totalmente autógena o semi-autógena, debe utilizarse; y qué tipo produce la máxima eficacia en la potencia consumida. También, los otros datos pertinentes deben ser recolectados, como por ejemplo: potencias, tonelajes, alimentación, carga, tamaño del producto, carga circulante, etc. Si es necesaria una molienda secundaria para obtener el tamano final, la decisión de qué molienda debe emplearse (molino de pebbles o molino de bolas) puede requerirse un ensayo de trabajo adicional. Finalmente, la concentración del mineral puede jugar un papel importante en la selección del circuito y debería ser una parte del ensayo final una vez que se ha establecido la molienda. Para determinar qué tipo de molinos pueden satisfacer los requerimientos establecidos por la planta piloto, debe tomarse una escala para ciertos datos como: potencia del molino, consumo de acero, simple o doble etapa de molienda, tipo de molino secundario. A method has been developed to remove calcite from the leaching circuit in the uranium in situ leaching system. The process involves injecting the leachate and a pH control agent tangentially into an inverted cone reactor containing calcite seed catalyst. The leachate can be treated at high throughput to obtain clear effluent containing 5 ppm or lower Ca. Both lime and ammonia are effective pH control agents and consumed according to stoichiometry.

Although grinding mill liner life has been the subject of extensive studies, evaluation of the effect of liner design on power consumption, a far more significant part of total grinding costs, has been less comprehensive. The factors that effect ball mill energy efficiency are reviewed, and attention is then focused on the mechanisms of grinding. The trajectory of the outer row of balls, with different lifting face angles, is derived, and basic recommendations for mill speed and liner configuration are presented.
