The territory of Czechoslovakia is well endowed in deposits of a variety of industrial minerals. At present, 29 different types of industrial minerals are mined from some 600 individual deposits in Bohemia and Moravia only. About half of those production centres involves structural materials like aggregate and common brick clays and loams. A significant proportion of industrial minerals produced in Czechoslovakia are exported. Destinations of main products are shown in Figure 1. Production of industrial minerals in Czechoslovakia has a long history. Glass has been produced since the 14th century, sulphuric acid since 1578, graphite since 1750, and chinaware since 1790, to name just a few; but most of the present production comes from deposits developed during the past forty years. For a variety of reasons, only about 30 per cent of registered and explored industrial minerals deposits in the country are in production (Table 1). Two of the reasons may be the complexity of processing or conflicting interests of parties involved, but lack of market research, investment funds, or processing capacity have also had an impact on the level of utilization of the resource base.

The term "powder factor" is almost universally accepted as the measure of the efficiency of a blasting program. It represents the economics of blasting since it designates quantity of explosive (thereby providing quality control in rock fragmentation) in terms of the associated volume broken. It is the wide use of this concept that explains the interest shown in an approach to rock blasting preferred by A. W. and Z. W. Daw* in a treatise on 3 blasting (1) substantiating its use in the form, Q = CVW3 for single shot hole, where Q = quantity of explosive lb Cv = blasting coefficient W3 = unit volume of rock It is obvious that the term Cv could also be called the apparent powder factor should the equation be written in the form, Cv = Q/W3 (lb per cubic unit). However, while the approach was ingenious** and the practical applications straightforward, their original, rather limited experimental work, along with certain assumptions, was questioned.

Longwall mining has gained acceptance as a safe method of maintaining coal production where conventional systems were unsuccessful or uneconomic due to bad roof conditions (Kuti8). One of the major problems confronting American operators involves the correct choice of equipment which should be selected to suit the local mining and geologic conditions for optimum productivity. To achieve this, factors such as rock strengths, local geology, panel geometry, and panel orientation must be examined to optimize production and minimize down time due to ground control problems. Little quantitative information is available in the literature regarding the effects of geologic conditions on American longwall operations, and past implementations of longwall systems appear to have been based largely on experience. When mining engineers are able to assess the geologic conditions both quantitatively and qualitatively, they can more fully optimize equipment selection and panel design.

Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System (LoSCoMS) is a software and data communication system developed at the University of Alabama. This system integrates real-time shield monitoring, data presentation, analysis and forecasting of forthcoming events. The main objective of this system is to provide stability information on longwall panels including excessive shield load, low setting pressure, leg leakage and poor shield performance, eminent maintenance problems, etc. Analyses of various mining and geological parameters were also performed to determine past and present roof characteristics and to forecast roof loading patterns for the following mining cycles, next periodic weighting, etc. A local coal mine in the Warrior Coal Basin has adopted this system to provide daily evaluation of ground stability and maintenance problems of their longwall panels. Two years of experience with this system is covered in this paper.

The depressing effects of different inorganic chemicals on the flotation of pyrite have been investigated in this study. The results of the flotation tests indicate that pyrite can be depressed by oxidizing as well as reducing agents under controlled conditions of pH and reagent dosage. Oxidizing reagents such as potassium chromate and potassium dichromate were found to cause complete depression of pyrite in the acidic pH range. These effects are similar to those obtained in the pyrite-cyanide system. A less stable oxidant, potassium permanganate, inhibited the flotation of pyrite at a concentration as low as 0.1 mol/L at all pH values, Addition of reducing chemicals such as ferrous chloride or manganous sulphate to the flotation of pyrite were found to produce depressing effects depending on the additive concentration and pH of the solution.

The main purpose of mine ventilation design is to provide sufficient quantity and quality of air to the workers and to dilute methane and other contaminants. It is generally perceived that the additional air along the longwall face will improve methane dilution on the face and in the tailgate. However, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling efforts at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) under a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) funded research project have found that higher flow velocities along the longwall face are shown to increase the pressure differential between the gob and longwall face allowing more methane to be entrained in the active face and tailgate (TG) area, thereby negating the dilution effect. The increased face ventilation causes an increase in pressure along the headgate side which allows more oxygen to ingress into the gob area, thereby increasing the amount of oxygen available to form explosive methane air mixtures in the gob and to support spontaneous combustion of the coal. Two things are happening at two different locations along the longwall face, increase in pressure as the flow enters the active area cause an increase in pressure which forces more oxygen into the gob, but as the flow is developed along the longwall face, the higher velocities causes greater pressure drop allowing methane to enter the active face further downstream from the headgate (HG) towards the tailgate side. In this paper, a parametric study will be presented to discuss the effect that varying the face air quantity has on methane concentrations in the tailgate and formation of explosive gas zones (EGZs) in the gob. Counter to conventional wisdom, it appears that increased longwall face air quantities may increase the explosion hazard as they result in increased EGZ volumes in the gob, along with increased methane quantities in the tailgate return.

High-rate thickeners play a critical role in tailings management by enhancing water recovery and increasing solids concentration. However, these units face operational instability due to fluctuations in feed solids, flow rate, and flocculant response typically managed in manual mode with delayed corrective actions. This work presents an adaptive automatic control algorithm designed for dynamic thickening environments. The algorithm integrates real-time measurements of feed density, rake torque, bed level, and turbidity (overflow), optimizing the underflow slurry density while minimizing suspended solids in the overflow. The proposed control strategy is modular, simple, scalable, and applicable to both existing and new thickening systems, offering a robust alternative to manual operation in increasingly demanding metallurgical environments.

The Bond ball mill grindability test is one of the most common metrics used in the mining industry for ore hardness measurements. The test is an important part of the Bond work index methodology for designing and measuring the efficiency of mineral grinding circuits. In spite of being called “Bond’s Law,” the work index equations are not a law of nature; but rather an empirically measured regression of a large data set collected by the Allis- Chalmers corporation in the period between 1930 and 1952. As a regression, it is valid within a specific “calibration space,” and great care is required when deviating the test procedures or observing results that are outside of that calibration space. This paper is a collected summary of other works by the Authors that describe feed sizes, product sizes, quality control checks, and other information about interpreting the test and using its results. Examples of adjustments that are sometimes required when using the test are: changing the test product (P80), and coping with a feed that is too fine to apply the “proper” feed preparation steps (such as is sometimes observed from HPGR or SAGDesign product testing). Related metrics, like the Morrell Mib value and Levin B value will be discussed, along with recommendations for their use on design projects. The intended audience is any user of laboratory work index test data.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has developed a computer image processing algorithm to determine the size distribution of moving taconite (iron ore) pellets. This algorithm interprets line-scan images to measure pellet diameters. Pellet edge detection with a peak light intensity constraint is the basis of this technique. Preliminary error analysis indicates a normally distributed experimental error with a standard deviation of 0.09 and 0.15 for pellet diameters of 0.4 and 0.9 cm, respectively. System accuracy was independent of moving pellet speed below 50 cm/sec. Computer image-based size distributions were found to be in close agreement with standard sieve analysis.

Texas Gulf Sulphur Company's Lee Creek Mine has opened a major phosphate mining district in the Central Coastal Plains of North Carolina (Fig. 1). The ore deposit as it is now known was roughly outlined in 1961 by a Texas Gulf geologist using wire line exploration methods. Slightly uraniferous phosphate materials were detected by a slim-hole gamma ray probe run in numerous farmers' water wells penetrating the formations. A follow-up-core drilling pro- gram determined the economic ore limits to lie in the south central section of Beaufort County beneath 70 feet to 120 feet of unconsolidated sediments. The 50,000 acre deposit is known to contain over two billion tons of phosphate ore amenable to strip mining methods. A part of the deposit underlies several thousand acres of the Pamlico River estuary. The 90 million dollar capital investment plant built by Texas Gulf during 1965-66 included a strip mining operation using a 72-yard walking dragline, a three million product ton per year flotation concentrator, four fluid bed calciners, a sulphuric acid plant (acid for captive use), a phosphoric acid plant, and three solid fertilizer material plants. Shipment to domestic markets is by rail and truck and to over- seas markets by barge to a transshipment terminal at Morehead City, North Carolina. Early mining investigations were conclusive first that the phosphate ore could economically be recovered only by dry strip mining methods, and second that artesian ground waters in the formation (Castle Hayne limestone) underlying the ore would have to be controlled. This report will relate the application of ground water hydrology in depressurizing the Castle Hayne aquifer to facilitate dry strip mining at depths 130 feet below sea level at the Lee Creek Mine.

Although more than 100 thorium-rare earth minerals are known, only a few have any commercial significance. Monazite, thorite, bastnasite, and some exotic thorium rare earth ores are reviewed Commercial interest is presently centered on monazite from the Union of South Africa, and thorite from this country. Thorium became commercially important with the development of the incandescent gas mantle about 75 years ago, Gas mantles consist of thorium oxide with small amounts of cerium oxide. The thorium nitrate used to make gas mantles was first obtained from rare thorium minerals, As a matter of fact, this use of thorium is still important and is one of the largest commercial uses for thorium materials. The discovery of monazite sand placer deposits along the coasts of Travancore, India, and in some Brazilian beach s .s, and the development of the old North and South Carolina monazite stream placers gave the mantle industry of 30 to 40 years ago a comfortable inventory of thorium ore. Even today, the thorium industry depends largely upon monazite ores for its source of thorium. This paper will briefly describe some of the major thorium ores and their principal deposits insofar as they relate to the thorium industry in this country. Because of similar chemical and physical properties, thorium always occurs with the rare earth elements and with varying amounts of yttrium. Thorium may predominate over rare earths, as in thorite-type minerals, or may represent only a fraction of the rare earth content. Typical ratios of thorium to rare earths in various minerals are given in Table 1, The average thorium content of the earth's crust is about 12 grams per ton, and in this respect thorium approximates lead, molybdenum, and some of the rare earths in abundance. The ore minerals of greatest importance to the-thorium-rare earth industry are monazite, thorite-type minerals, bastnasite-type- ores, and the family of minerals which is characterized by a preponderance of the heavy rare earths and yttrium. The latter classification includes xenotime, gadolinite, samarskite, euxenite, etc, The first two, monazite and thorite, are of greatest significance.

To the casual observer there is probably no simpler appearing operation in the mineral industry than a limestone quarry. It might seem that the entire operation - from the drilling, blasting, and loading of the stone, its transport to a mill for crushing, washing and sizing, to loading into boats, railroad cars, or trucks for delivery to customers - can be comprehended at a glance. But no first impression could be more misleading. It is one of the purposes of this presentation to sketch the broad outlines of the extensive limestone industry in the United States which, measured in terms of volume of production since the end of World War II, has grown almost 300 per cent to a national level in 1957 of 384 million net tons.1 Another objective will be to discuss in more detail this industry in the State of Michigan. For this latter purpose, the Michigan Limestone Division plants at Calcite and at Cedarville will be used as examples. These descriptions will, we believe, show that the limestone business has complexities to match its size.

The effectiveness of a flotation column is due principally to the addition of wash water to the froth phase. The wash water flow rate can be significant, especially so for systems yielding a high weight recovery of fine solids, e.g. zinc sulfide flotation. Therefore, it is critical to recognize and assess the impact of the water addition upon upstream separation stages. This paper examines column flotation circuit configurations using data from a portable 2 t/day pilot plant. The objective is to provide an improved basis for column design, either as a retrofit or as part of a new circuit.

Kerr-McGee has operated the Ambrosia Lake uranium mill since startup in 1958. Tonnage milled per day has varied from 3500-7000 tons. The mill capacity is currently rated at 7000 tons per day. The process consists of two parallel circuits following crushing and sampling, \\lhich include open circuit rod mill grinding, sulfuric acid leach, cyclone classification, and counter-current washing circuits of sand classifiers and slime thickeners. Pregnant solution is clarified and polished by precoat pressure leaf filters prior to amine solvent extraction. Yellowcake is precipitated from the pregnant strip solution with ammonia, filtered and dried.

This paper discusses the time-dependent behaviour of rock when it involves the presence of several layers of rock strata in the vicinity of mine openings, mining in sequences and the placement of backfill. The paper describes numerical techniques which proved useful when such situations are encountered in practice. The model is elastoviscoplastic. At given time stations, short term loading or changes can be made to the creep behavior of the rock. The modelling technique is first described and is followed by simulations of stresses and displacements in a potash mine with the primary objective to demonstrate the effect of such aspects as mining and fill sequences in 3-D. This involves cutting finite elements representing the strip of the mining face and simultaneously filling those elements representing the newly placed fill. The stiffness of the fill varies with the degree of compaction at each point. In this way, the effect of the time of fill placement, the gap between the top of the fill and the back as well as the degree of compaction are simulated. The second example is a 2-D problem simulating the long term effect of backfill, as a material compacting with time, on the settlement of the layers above it as well as the closure of the room.

The Richmond Hill Mine has recently completed a reclamation plan to mitigate Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) which was identified at the toe of the former waste rock pile in 1992. Reclamation activities began in 1994 with the removal of ARD material from the waste rock pile and placement of this material in the former pit. This material was then isolated from the near surface environment by a low permeability capping system designed to minimize water and oxygen flow into the material. The capping system consists of, from bottom to top, six inches of limestone, 18 inches of low permeability clay liner, 4 and one-half feet of thermal barrier/drain layer, and six inches of topsoil. This capping system was completed in 1995. An extensive program is in place to monitor the effectiveness of the reclamation plan, and includes measurements on moisture content movement, temperature, oxygen content, and groundwater impacts. Monitoring has been ongoing since the completion of reclamation. This monitoring plan is demonstrating the success in isolating the material from the near surface environment and minimizing the impacts to the surrounding environment.

Introduction Gold mining on an industrial scale is becoming increasingly dependent on low-grade refractory sulfide ores that contain large amounts of pyrite (FeS2) and arsenopyrite (FeAsS). Gold is usually present as sub-microscopic particles dispersed evenly throughout the sulfide matrix. Without some form of preoxidation, efficient recovery of this finely disseminated gold through cyanide leaching is hampered because the surface of the sulfide particle becomes passivated and impervious to penetration of the cyanide. Traditional methods for recovery of refractory gold from arsenopyrite ores include roasting and autoclave leaching. A modem alternative method is to preoxidize the mineral using the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans prior to attempting to re- cover the gold through cyanidation. The bioleaching of arsenopyrite ores presents a problem in the mobilization of large quantities of arsenic, present both in the +5 and +3 ionic states. Dissolved arsenic species pose a dual problem: they are -1 to the bioleaching process itself through inhibition of bacterial activity, and they also pose an environmental threat. The arsenate anion (AsO2) has been shown to be more toxic to living organisms, including Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, than the arsenate anion (AsO43) (Collinet and Morin, 1989). There is some disagreement as to the fate of arsenite in bioleaching solution. Mandl, Matulova, and Docekalova (1992) reported that dissolved arsenite concentration was constant during a long-term bioleaching study of chalcopyrite using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Torma and Oolman (1992) report that Thiobacillus ferrooxidans has been found capable of oxidizing As3+ to As5+. The solid products of arsenopyrite/pyrite bioleaching include jarosite (MFe3(SO4)2(OH)6 where M can be K+, Na+, NH4+ or H3O+), scorodite (FeAsO4.2H2O), ferric hydroxides, and ferric hydroxysufites (Carlson et. al., 1992; Van Breemen, 1982; Lazaroff et. al., 1982). The particular species formed is a function mainly of pH. Little study has been performed on the effect of solid products on bioleaching. Pesic and Kim (1993) showed that Thiobacillus ferrooridans cells served as a nucleation sites for jarosite particles, which grew rapidly and eventually killed the cell. Most bioleaching studies are performed at low pH&apos;s (<2.0) under uncontrolled conditions. By studying bioleaching of arsenopyrite under controlled pH conditions and at higher pH&apos;s (2.0 to 3.0), the distribution of iron and arsenic between the solid and liquid phases can be controlled, and their effects studied. The objective is to develop a bioleaching process that operates at high efficiency while keeping amounts of dissolved heavy metals low. Pesic, Stohok, and Torma (1993) demonstrated the usefulness of this approach in the leaching of cobaltite (CoAsS) concentrates. Materials and Methods The focus of this study was the bioleaching of arsenopyrite ore by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The parameters studied included the effects of pH, and the effects of arsenate (AsO43 and arsenite (AsO2). pH studies included pH set initially but not controlled, and pH controlled continuously with NaOH or LiOH. Bioleaching results from two strains of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans with different adaptation histories were compared. Bioleaching experiments were conducted in 150 ml stirred glass reactors using a strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans adapted to arsenopyrite ore, supplied by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. These bioreactors were innoculated with stock cells grown on arsenopyrite ore for 14-16 days. Typical elemental breakdown for this ore was: As, 9.90%; Fe, 18.60%, Stot, 9.26%; Suifide, 7.50%; SiO2, 25.90%. Mineralogically, the ore contained both arsenopyrite and pyrite. Bioleaching efficiency was measured by withdrawing bioleach solution samples at selected intervals, filtering, and measuring the amount of dissolved cobalt, iron, and arsenic by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Because the precipitation of iron and arsenic at higher pH&apos;s would lead to unreliable results, a 100 mg tracer of cobaltite concentrate from the Blackbird mine in southern Idaho was added to solution. Dissolution of the cobaltite tracer was used to indicate bioleaching of the bulk arsenopyrite ore. Crocidolite is a well-known causative agent for mesothelioma. However, studies have shown that the pathogenicity of the fiber from different mines varies considerably and it has been postulated the parameter that appears most likely to account for this variation is fiber width although this has never been formally confirmed. To date, crocidolite appears to be the only asbestos mineral for which an epidemiological study comparing the risk of mesothelioma in a population exposed to ‘thin’ fibers with another exposed to ‘thick’ fibers of the same species may be carried out. Finnish anthophyllite, South African amosite, and African Transvaal crocidolite can also be classified as thick fibers, and there is a paucity of mesotheliomas in populations exposed to them compared to those exposed to thin Cape crocidolite. No thin occurrences of these minerals are known. Our previous study looked at crocidolite from several sources. The present study considers the amphibole anthophyllite found in many places in the world. This mineral, regardless of source, does not show the same variation in fiber width found with crocidolite from different areas. All anthophyllite fibers that have been mined may be classified as thick and populations exposed show very low levels of mesothelioma. We suggest the most likely explanation is related to the fiber width distribution and a concomitant reduction in the ‘Stanton fiber size’ fraction.

Due to the ongoing restructuring of the mining industry in central Europe with a continuous decline of the number of large underground mines and collieries, and a simultaneous decline of staff numbers in the remaining mines, the established mine rescue schemes are endangered to collapse. With the end of the mine rehabilitation at Wismut Uranium in 2014, the last remaining major mine rescue teams in Saxony, providing basic mine rescue services for all other mines in the region, will disappear. This will leave a large number of small mines and other underground operations without capable mine rescue support. Since none of these companies is able to set up a complete mines rescue unit on its own, new ways have to be found. Among others, a central mine rescue team for central Germany as well as the assistance by special trained professional fire fighters or mine rescue teams from abroad are discussed. Problems like location of the central rescue team, financing, communication and transport have to be solved. This paper provides an overview over the complexity of the problem as an example for other mining regions worldwide and will discuss national and cross-national strategies.

The tremendous engineering advances occurring during this past century are very evident within the boundaries of the Anthracite Section of AIME. The Steelton plant of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, located along the Susquehanna River just east of the Commonwealth&apos;s capital at Harrisburg, for more than 105 years has experienced a most dynamic life which has paralleled America&apos;s industrial growth. (Figure 1) In June 1865, just after the Civil War, a group of men met to organize the Pennsylvania Steel Company. The war had brought into sharp focus the vital importance of the railroads to the country&apos;s expansion. Until that time wrought iron rails were used, and the replacing of track after only several months wear had become an almost unbearable cost. The spirit of free, competitive enterprise and the prospects of a lucrative market compelled these men to form that first Pennsylvania Steel Company and to develop better rail products. They issued the following statement: "...our desire to free ourselves from dependence upon a foreign market (has) led to the organization of the Pennsylvania Steel Company, and the parties who have connected themselves with it are determined to produce upon American soil all the principal manufactures of steel that are now, at such a serious cost for freight, commission, insurance, exchange, duty, etc., and often, with so much delay and uncertainty, imported from abroad.
