Perlite is an altered rhyolitic glass with 2 to 5 wt % water that expands or "pops" when heated quickly to plasticity while evolving steam to form lightweight, glass foam. Commercial perlite deposits in New Mexico are well-developed zones of chemical weathering (hydration) superimposed on highly permeable and thick glassy zones at the chilled upper surface and toes of high-silica-rhyolite lava flows and lava domes. The maximum tonnage of glass in these volcanoes was predetermined by their unique eruptive histories. New Mexico perlite production (80% of US production of 571,00 st) is mostly from the 3.9 Ma high-silica-rhyolite lava flows at the No Agua Peaks volcanic center. The primary vent at No Agua is defined by a 900 ft-high rubidium-rich composite lava dome, known as West Peak, that contains minor perlite reserves. Slightly less rubidium-rich lava squeezed out from under the west flank of the dome to form relatively thin (250 ft) but highly vesicular lobate flows that now consist of about 50 % recoverable perlite. Finally, rubidium-poor lavas were extruded from a radial dike on the northeast flank of the dome. These thicker (400 ft) flow lobes contain about 20 % recoverable perlite. The largest mass of lava does not always contain the most perlite. The thinner (west) flow at No Agua yields the largest perlite reserves rather than the large composite lava dome or thicker (east) flow.

Utah has produced about one billion troy oz. (31.7M tonnes) of silver, more than any U.S. state except Idaho. Several very high grade ore systems, now closed, occur within large polymetallic limestone-hosted districts related to plutonic complexes. These Utah mines fed several major lead smelters for nearly a century. Interaction of magmatic chloride-rich fluids with carbonate rocks localized significant bonanzas within these districts. A low sulfidation state was produced in the fluids by their passage through limestones. The Bingham porphyry mine has also yielded more byproduct silver than other porphyry copper-gold systems. Away from exposed intrusive rocks, some large silver-only systems occur in Mesozoic sandstone and in caldera-related veins in volcano sedimentary rocks. Thick permeable latest-Proterozoic basement meta quartzite sequences present beneath western Utah may have been important, as perhaps they were in the Coeur d’Alene district of Idaho, in providing chloride and silver-rich ore fluids. However, it is clear that specific Tertiary magmatic events played an essential role in the evolution of the Utah silver-rich metallogenic province. The largest silver districts in the state are genetically related to porphyritic plutonic rocks.

"Australia’s largest rail freight network operator, the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), has selected GE Transportation’s Movement Planner solution as the key technology enabler for its Hunter Valley-focused network control optimization program.ARTC’s Newcastle-based network control, is the nerve center of Hunter Valley rail operations, where locally based train control professionals make thousands of decisions every day to safely support the annual movement of more than 24 kt/h (26,400 stph) of freight, and tens of thousands of coal, freight, grain and passenger trains each year.ARTC plans to transform its train control function by integrating and then building on Movement Planner, an advanced software solution by GE Transportation that provides real-time rail traffic planning and optimization to enable freight to move more efficiently. “The Hunter Valley rail network is one of the busiest and most complex in the country, supporting the largest coal export port in the world,” ARTC managing director and chief executive officer John Fullerton said.“As bulk freight demands grow, rail operators like ARTC and supply chains like the Hunter Valley coal network need to be creative in the way they respond so the Australian economy doesn’t miss out. That’s why we have conducted a worldwide search to find globally proven solutions that will improve our network productivity and efficiency,” Fullerton said.The Movement Planner solution considers multiple factors including train schedules, trafficcontrol systems and train movements relative to each other and then develops an optimized traffic plan for the trains throughout the network. The phenomena of dripping into cavities (e.g. tunnels and drifts) within an unsaturated fractured porous medium under ventilated conditions is studied to improve estimates of dripping rates, drop sizes, and chemical composition of droplets that could affect the integrity of high-level nuclear waste packages placed in drifts. The sensitivity of dripping rates and water chemistry to ventilation is analyzed at various flow rates using analytical expressions linking flow on fracture surfaces to drop formation and evaporation. The model was tested using laboratory experiments involving machined aluminum slabs designed to represent a simplified morphology of a fracture face intersecting a cavity and using natural fracture surfaces from a welded tuff. Comparison with ten years of data on dripping in natural caves showed good agreement with model predictions. In particular, for low dripping rates, evaporation due to ventilation leads to larger drop sizes and alters drop chemistry by increasing the concentration of solutes in the drop relative to that in the water flowing on the fracture face.

That phrase remains today as the guiding principle that governs our total approach to safety and well being in U. S. Steel. U. S. Safety is a state of mind but like most things it must have a physical side - both intertwined and inseparable. You might say each promotes the other; and this gives us confidence that with hard work, cooperation from all individuals, and proper application of knowledge and experience, our ultimate objective of frequency "0" will be attained. It is in this vein of thought we present a paper today which gives you briefly our progress, mainly in the physical, or mechanical, protection of miners at work in the Southern District mining operations of U. S. Steel. The Southern District not only includes the underground mining of coal but the underground mining of zinc ore in Jefferson City, Tennessee, and the quarrying of dolomitic limestone near Bessemer, Alabama.

In October 2006, a 7m Double Shield TBM, boring through very poor volcanic formations, was pushed back by fluid mud, which presence had not been detected during previous field investigations, due to the high covers characterizing the majority of the tunnel axis. The present work describes the investigations made to gain better knowledge of the conditions in front and all around the TBM, the special measures implemented, the exploratory and bypass tunnels excavated, the extraordinary occurrences came true during the execution of these tunnels, the drainage campaigns, the design of the chamber excavated to free the TBM, the dismounting and restarting of the TBM.

On April 3, 1981, Harrison Western Corporation was awarded a contract by Amax Alloy - A Division of Amax Inc., to sink the Henderson #5 ventilation shaft. The project was located on the Henderson Mine site 88 kilometers west of Denver near the town of Empire, Colorado (Figure I). The Henderson No. 5 Shaft, located in an Alpine environment at an elevation of 3145 meters, was a 9.8 meter diameter concrete lined shaft with a total depth of 793 meters. Work started and continued with Harrison Western employees until January 15, 1982. At that time, Amax made the decision to continue the shaft-sinking with their own labor, and with Harrison Western providing supervision under a management service contract. Shaft sinking continued under this arrangement to October 1, 1982, at which time Amax put the Henderson No. 5 project on standby status until further notice.

"Why should we care about diesel quality amidst the complexity of mining for minerals? Mining companies use a large amount of diesel fuel in their worldwide operations, both for moving ore from the mine to the processing mills or transportation hubs, and to generate power for onsite processing. This creates a large carbon footprint and poses both environmental risk with the production of emissions, and public perception of how those companies do their business as stewards of the environment while incurring a huge fuel expenditure. To improve diesel quality and create incremental value and greater environmental stewardship, the opportunity is broken down into several segments: 1. Mining industry diesel consumption 2. Fuel quality issues 3. Impacts on operations, economics, and emissions 4. Potential solutions 5. How improved fuel quality saves fuel expenditures 6. Economics of improved fuel quality 7. Recommended testing process 8. Fuel quality analysis checklist MINING INDUSTRY DIESEL CONSUMPTION The average grade of mined Australian ore bodies has halved, while the waste removed to access the minerals has more than doubled over the last 30 years, thus increasing energy consumption by 70%, (http://eex.gov.au/industry-sectors/mining/). Energy consumption and intensity in mining and mineral processing is rising at around 6% per annum. The mining industry is a huge consumer of diesel fuel worldwide, and the SRS Rocco Report of 4 August 2014 gives a better picture of recent trends. To better understand the reasons to reduce both fuel costs and consumption, we need to compare metrics on the amount of diesel consumed per each ounce of gold produced over the last decade. The rate of diesel consumption in gallons per each ounce of gold produced for the top five worldwide gold producers has doubled in the last 8 years from 12.7 gallons per ounce in 2005 to 25.8 in 2013 as shown in Figure 1 below.This is caused by 1) lower ore grades requiring more hauls to get same amount of finished gold product, and 2) haul trucks moving ore from deeper sources in open pit and underground mines. For one large multi-national gold mining company, the 2005 waste rock / production ratio was 52 metric tons/gold ounce; by 2013 that ratio had grown to 113 metric tons/gold ounce per the same SRSrocco 4 August 2014 report. Using the metrics above, the top 5 gold miners used over 591 million gallons of diesel fuel in 2013. The cost of diesel in dollars per ounce of gold has increased from $30.48 in 2005 to $101.14 in 2013, an annual appreciation of 16.2% as shown in Figure 2 below."

The shipment of coal, ores, and minerals in bulk form during the winter months presents a difficult problem in emptying rail cars. U. S. Steel Research in cooperation with U. S. Steel Coal Operations bas laboratory tested and field monitored the effectiveness of using freeze conditioning agents (FCA) to minimize the frozen coal problem. This report examines, in an overview manner, our experience after four seasons of treatment using different FCA agents on raw and preparation plant products. Our observations indicate that if an FCA is applied correctly it is effective mineral to mineral. Freezing problems still occur at the interface between the coal and the metal of the car sides and bottoms. Leading chemical suppliers have made positive improvements in their FCA formulations with second and third generation products. Further advances are needed to make chemical treatment for the prevention of frozen coal a real full-proof method.

Let's start with a bit of History. Before the advent of woven wire screen cloth or perforated plate as we know it today, screens or sieves, as they were called, were probably made by the Greeks or Romans around the year 150 B.C. Coarse openings were made from bamboo or other woven reeds or with holes punched in leather hides, while fine openings may have been made using hair from the long tails of horses woven with small openings. The first metallic woven wire screens were probably produced by the Germans in the 15th Century. All of these screening devices were, of course, hand operated. The first records of mechanically driven shaking screens are found in "John Smeathon's Diary of His Journey to the Low-Country" in 1775. He was the English Civil Engineer who built the famous Eddystone Light House and discovered the formula for making hydraulic cements. He described a screen the Dutch were using as a wooden frame on which woven wire was mounted. This box was inclined at an angle and hinged on the lower end. The upper or feed end was equipped with a pulley so they could raise it up, say 5" or 6", and then let it drop abruptly onto a sill or stop plate, thus jarring the material deposited on the woven wire through the openings. Material that was passed over the deck was scooped up and redeposited on the woven wire for rescreening. This was an early form of what is today known as a recirculating load.

In the early 1960's the Company, then named the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company, was drilling the Continental ore body located near Fierro, New Mexico. Reserves of underground ore of sufficient quantity were indicated to build a mill. At the same time some ore from the Continental No. 1 mine was being milled at the Company's Bullfrog Mill, formerly a lead-zinc mill. The copper ore in comparison to the lead-zinc ores was very hard, abrasive, and heavy. These factors pointed out the possibility and attractiveness of autogenous grinding. While prior to this some study had been given to autogenous grinding, no large scale tests had been made. Such a program was carried out and from the pilot plant data the following was established: 1. Grinding of the ore by autogenous means could be accomplished. 2. This could be done in one stage; however, not at a satisfactory tonnage throughput rate. Thus, the use of a secondary unit has been employed. 3. Grinding in the secondary unit could be done by pebbles generated in the primary unit. This resulted in the scheme whereby the ore would be ground 100% autogenously. 4. Liberation of the copper minerals was excellent so that good recovery at a satisfactory concentrate grade would be obtainable.

Deep Well turbine pumps receive constantly increasing application to the problem of mining water and other fluids from great depths. Many installations of medium settings are presently operating successfully and it is felt that mach greater depths are immediately within reach. Settings and lifts in excess of 2000 feet: are not at all out of reason with present knowledge experience, and materiels; however, conditions of individual applications will govern in each case and dictate methods and possibilities to the designer. Design and operating problems of deep set -turbine pumps ire discussed together with a description of various types of equipment falling within this category. Although the deep well turbine pump has been produced In the vertical turbine pump industry for many years, the connotation of the word "deep" still remains questionable. Among the manufacturers of this type of machinery, answers to the question implying the practical limitation of setting for a deep well pump will vary to an extreme. Most pump designers are in accord that this type of equipment has not yet been exploited to its fullest degree; however, the subject is admittedly fraught with unsolved problems and un¬tried solutions so that such a discussion must necessarily derive from personal opinion and, belief., even though based on substantial experience and background. For this reason, it will be stipulated that the present writing will deal with what may be termed euphemistically ?a highly controversial subject.? During the nineteenth century, a paper was published under proper authority proving beyond question that the human body could not withstand speeds exceeding 20 miles per hour. As a limitation, this looks ' pretty ridiculous to us today. At the beginning of the twentieth century, there was not a single machine in operation that could be described as mullti-stage deep well centrifugal pump. Nickel laterites throughout the world are similar in their gross aspects, but vary significantly in detail. The deposits occur in two separate and distinct geologic settings --those formed over ultramafic rocks which were mechanically emplaced, and those formed over ultramafic rocks that were intruded as melts. The source of the primary nickel in the parent rock may occur both as ionic replacement in silicate lattices and as nickel sulfides. Factors controlling the degree of laterization and nickel enrichment are dependent upon the parent rock characteristics as well as chemical and climatic conditions. Two chemically and physically distinct zones (oxide and saprolite) are commonly present in the laterized rock, but one or the other may be extremely thin or absent. Cobalt and copper may be present in recoverable amounts. Geologic, geophysical and geochemical methods are all utilized in exploring for these deposits. These methods are compared, evaluated and illustrated in the paper. Drilling patterns and ore reserve calculations are also discussed. In contrast to many ore deposits, processing costs are much higher than mining costs. The most efficient processing method is directly dependent upon the chemical composition of the ore. This variation in the chemical and physical characteristics of nickel laterites requires a detailed test program of the metallurgical response to representative samples and blends of ore. Detailed laboratory and bench-scale metallurgical tests are necessary prior to a full scale pilot plant test.

"The term “aggregate” has a number of definitions depending primarily on the use of the material. Aggregate in some context is sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag or other material of mineral composition used in bituminous and portland cement concrete, mortar, plaster, railroad ballast, filter beds and a variety of other uses where aggregates can be utilized.Of the natural aggregates, crushed stone is widely used for most construction purposes. Crushed stone can be mined from a variety of rock types such as limestone, dolomite (dolostone), granites, and granitic type rocks, basalt, gabbro (trap rock), sandstones, schist, marble, gneiss, quartzite, rhyolite, as well as other rock types. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) breaks down the rocks by type sold as follows: limestone, dolomite, marble, calcareous marl, shell, granite, trap rock (basalt, diorite) sandstone/quartzite, slate, volcanic cinder and scoria and miscellaneous stone.In 2015, the USGS estimates that 1.32 Gt (1.45 billion st) of crushed stone were produced in the United States. The volume of crushed stone produced, and the numerous mines that produce it make the crushed stone industry the largest mining industry in the United States. The five leading states for production of crushed stone in 2015 were Texas, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Florida and Ohio. The size of the first two states certainly helps in output because of the large market area. The remaining states benefit from being able to barge along rivers to outside markets in adjoining states. Georgia producers rail large amounts of granitic aggregate to Florida and adjacent states devoid of crushed stone aggregate, especially skid resistant aggregate (aggregate used on the top course of asphalt roads)."

For mineral processing spirals, mathematical force equilibrium models are sought to extend the spiral performance envelop. In Part 1 of this report, a complete geometric description of the helical spiral and its trough or channel contour is provided. The secondary circulatory fluid motion in the transverse direction that develops when water flows down a tightly turning curvilinear path and its implications for gravity separation are discussed. Different forces that act on the particle during its passage through the spiral are enumerated and quantified for a better appreciation of their relative contributions and roles in the separation process. Three force equilibrium models from the hydrology literature on sed iment transport are employed to simulate a typical spiral. While the results are promising in that the models mimic the broad performance characteristics of the spiral, what is needed is a more general spiral model taking explicit cognizance of the missing components essential to the spiral description. These are such components as centrifugal force and the steep tangential slope of the channel deck. Results of this latter exercise are deferred to Part 2.

"PROJECTThe “Caltanissetta” Tunnel is part of the ANAS S.p.A (National Autonomous Roads Corporation) $ 1.3 Billion Highway 640 Caltanissetta-Agrigento (Sicily, Italy) Rehabilitation Project, consisting in upgrading of 62 km (40 miles) of highway. The Italian multinational construction company Cooperativa Muratori & Cementisti di Ravenna, is the General Contractor for the design and build contract. The highway S.S. 640 starts from Porto Empedocle, to the intersection with the Motorway A 19 Catania-Palermo.The entire project, double carriageway designed for speed 70-120 km/h and maximum longitudinal slope of 4.2%, is divided into two sections. First Section: just finished and opened to traffic. Second Section: mainly involving the province of Caltanissetta, length about 28 km (18 miles), works started in 2013. This second section includes the most challenging work of all the project, the “Caltanissetta” tunnel consisting of two separate tubes, each with 3.9 km length and inside diameter of 13.50 m, in order to host 2 traffic lines and an emergency line. HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL ALIGNMENT - GEOLOGY AND HYDROGEOLOGYThe plan alignment of “Caltanissetta” tunnel is formed by two tubes which are located at a minimum mutual distance of 22 m to a maximum of 63 m, with n. 9 pedestrian and n. 4 road cross passages; ventilation shafts are not provided. Overburden over portals area is about 5 m till a maximum of 120 m. Tunnel sections have variable longitudinal slope from 2.6% to 0.5%, transversal slope of about 3.5%. Right tube length is 3,992 m, left tube length is 3,877 m."

Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the international seabed area (Area) and its resources are the common heritage of humanity (CHH). Patent rights can be incompatible with the CHH doctrine and its underlying principles because patent holders might charge unjustifiably high prices to license patented technology for exploring and exploiting the Area’s resources (creating a "patent holdup" situation), might choose not to license, or might license exclusively when doing so would contravene CHH principles. However, a reasonable patent licensing regime can contribute to sharing the benefits derived from the Area and promote environmental sustainability. Provisions of the UNCLOS that stipulated compulsory technology and financial transfers were removed in the 1994 Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the UNCLOS but to promote equity and sustainability I propose a voluntary licensing regime modeled on the concept of reasonable and non-discriminatory patent licensing that has been used in other contexts. The International Seabed Authority or another entity will need to coordinate and promote this licensing regime through governance of intellectual property derived from the Area. This proposed approach can better effectuate the CHH doctrine and its underlying principles.

Introduction Americans have long been proud of their ability to recognize a need, define it, and then develop workable solutions. The U.S. underground coal conversion (UCC) program is a good example. In 1974, the need to utilize coal resources that could not be mined was recognized, and Congress gave the Bureau of Mines $1.7 million to gain a better understanding of the UCC technology and its potential applications. Since 1977 when the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE) was formed, workable technologies have been tested, the market for underground coal conversion has been recognized, and extensive industrial interest has developed. Perspective The U.S. is blessed with extensive coal resources. Coal supplies about 19% of our national energy needs, yet recently promulgated environmental standards and increasing mining costs have limited direct coal use. UCC potentially can use coal that is economically or technically infeasible to mine because the coal is too thick, deep, dirty, high-ash, and wet; has an excessive angle of dip; or has unpredictable and poor over-burden characteristics that make mining unsafe. Coal can be gasified underground or perhaps liquefied below the earth's surface. Underground coal gasification (UCG) is the prime element of the underground coal conversion program. It enables coal to be converted to gas underground. UCC Coal Resource Recent data show a total U.S. coal resource base of about 6.4 trillion tons. Of this, 1.8 trillion tons might be accessed by UCC, including some minable coal. A commercial UCC process could quadruple roughly the 450 billion tons of U.S. coal reserves, which presently are recoverable by mining. The U.S. coal resources are divided into five sectors. The two most eastern sectors contain relatively thin, swelling bituminous coals that are difficult to gasify. Of the two, the bituminous coal in the Eastern Province is the most difficult because it is deeper than in the Interior Province and the terrain is more rugged. The sector along the Rocky Mountains contains huge amounts of thick low-rank coals that are the most promising for early development by UCC. The coal has good continuity and the terrain is suitable. A high seam geologic condition exists at Jim Walter Resources No.4 mine which requires immediate rib support after a continuous miner cuts a place, High seam mining heights are typically 2.4 to 2.6 m (8 to 9 it) and a thick rock layer is present in the upper portion of the coal rib side. The 610 m (2000 ft) mining depth at No. 4 mine induces horizontal rib line movement after excavating an entry. Horizontal rib movement greater than 30.5 cm (12 in) have been noted. When lateral movement occurs in the high seam areas, the thick rock layer, and the coal above the rock layer, become fractured and tend to roll into the entry. If not adequately supported, large rib rolls develop in the place being bolted as well as in previously mined areas which endanger men and equipment. To control this situation rib support must be installed in the roof bolting operation as the bolting crew works towards the face. A rib control system has been developed for this high seam mining condition utilizing a mechanical anchor bolt placed at an angle in the rib and installed with a modified Fletcher DDFI- 15 bolting machine. Over 120 km (75 mi) of entry have been supported with angle rib bolts. These angle bolts constitute 43 to 60% of the total roof and rib bolt footage in the high seam port- ions of No.4 mine. The angle rib bolting system has proven safer, more effective, and more efficient than the earlier support method employing bolts installed horizontally into the rib. No rib roll accidents have occurred since the angle drill bolting machines were placed in service in 1981. By securing the broken rib material with an angle bolt anchored above the coal pillar, a more effective means of rib control is achieved. Angle rib bolting does not interfere with continuous miner productivity. In addition, bolting crews are now reduced from three to two people and the total drilling supply costs are approximately 60% the previous cost, when compared to the previous support method using horizontal rib bolts.
