There is no doubt that simulated ventilation networks must be adequately verified before they can be extrapolated and used for predictive purposes. There are two general approaches as to how the verification can be established and these are summarised as follows; The first approach is to measure all individual branches with trailing hoses or barometers to get individual pressure drop and flow per branch and then calculate individual resistance factors for input into the software. The simulator is run, checking that the output makes general sense (check some sensitivities if possible). The network is now considered as verified. The pressure drop to be measured is relatively small and thus it is inherent that the measured set of individual K factors will be imprecise no matter how much care is taken in the measurements and the resultant simulations will inherit the same problem. In the second approach, the network is assembled using estimated (Atkinson) K factors (based on physical features of airway, past experience and catalogued typical K factors). Only the main primary flow rates are measured and hence the relative distribution of the primary ventilation in the main airways is determined (probably about 10 off primary air flow measurements). Main critical pressure differentials at main and booster fans and across critical doors are measured (probably about 6 off primary pressure differential measurements need to be made). The simulator is run and the computer model is used to iterate and select an updated suite of K factors so that the flow balances and pressure differentials are correctly simulated (typically only 2 or 3 iterations are all that is needed). The network is now considered as verified. The pressure differences to be measured will be substantial in absolute terms and can be measured with high precision. Also, because only primary flows are measured, these will generally be measured at higher air speed points and hence improved relative accuracy. This leads to more accurate simulation results. Unmineable coal seams present an opportunity to sequester carbon dioxide emissions from power plants, while enhancing the recovery of coalbed methane. Injected carbon dioxide is adsorbed and stored on the coal surface while releasing methane that can be commercially recovered. Carbon sequestration, therefore, allows the utilization of unexploited mineral resources while reducing “greenhouse” gas emissions. This paper presents the feasibility, efficiency and enhanced recovery potential of coalbed methane production using carbon dioxide sequestration in the Central Appalachian Basin. The focus of research is on geological characterization of unmineable coal seams in Central Appalachia and the corresponding carbon dioxide storage capacity. Virginia Tech and Marshall Miller & Associates, Inc. conducted this research under the Department of Energy’s Southeast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership program.

Commodity price down cycles are a fact of life in the mining industry. And companies pre-pare for them as best they can. Evenso, operations are still curtailed or closed during those cycles, profits shrink, layoffs are inevitable and many companies do not survive. However, one of the few good things that occurs during down cycles is the new, innovative exploration, mining and processing technologies that come about during hard times. To survive the lean times, the mining industry turns to improved technology to decrease costs and hold the bottom line. And, because mining is a cyclical business, each down cycle brings about technology improvements that carry over into the good times.

The 86th Annual Meeting of the SME Minnesota section/74th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium partnered with the Canadian Institute of Mining Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM)?s Iron Ore Symposium for a historic joint conference, held this year in Duluth, MN, April 15- 17. One of a flurry of recent collaborations between SME and CIM, the joint conference was a natural fit for the conference held in the heart of the Iron Range. As CIM National President Terence Bowles said in his joint keynote with SME President Jessica Kogel, ?The U.S. imports $51 billion from Canada and Canada imports $38 billion the U.S.; that?s 50 percent of Canada?s exports and 51 percent of its imports.? The two countries? economies are linked, and nowhere more closely than in their iron ore mining activities. Kogel opened the conference with a plenary speech identifying the top 10 issues facing mining and how these issues present opportunities for mining companies. She said that it is important that the mining industry stay flexible and adapt to changing conditions, or it will go the way of the dinosaur. However, she said that these challenges can lead to new opportunities. For example, one of the major challenges facing mining is the current state of risk aversion among investors, which makes for ?less money in the pipeline.? However, this situation creates a better climate for mergers and acquisitions, which is another, less risky way to get funding. Likewise, another challenge globally is geopolitical risk; this challenge is likely to drive growth toward stable countries, which was good news for an audience composed mostly of Minnesota and Canadian mining industry personnel. One of the highlights of Kogel?s address was a triangle illustrating the interdependent nature of sustainable development and corporate social responsibility (Fig. 1). This triangle consists of four equal components: the social environment, transparency, local and global impact and future generations. The most important takeaway, Kogel said, was that sustainable development and environmental and social responsibility, while they do add to the cost of doing business, are no longer optional.

Engineering for specific loadsOvako has specialized over many decades in analyzing the dominant loads for each of the parts and components used in rock tools, and testing for individual applications in its laboratories. The most critical fatigue properties are controlled through the steel metallurgy, and supported by performance measurements through extensive rotating bending fatigue (RBF) testing, along with special methods that combine impact load with various wear loads. The result is a fit-for-purpose steel with tightly controlled performance properties, making it possible for customers to precalculate the expected life time of their components for highly automated and repetitive processes Tailoring steels for the processing route.The same levels of control and predictability must be carried through to the customer’s own manufacturing processes. By ensuring minimal variations in chemical composition, everything from heat treatment and welding to automated machining can be carried out with high consistency. Heap leaching is a simple means of recovering copper from oxide and oxide-sulfide ores. Although this method requires relatively low capital investment, it suffers from low copper recoveries and relatively high acid consumption. The objectives of this study were (1) to determine what factors influence these shortcomings, and (2) to establish a basis of correlation. between laboratory and field testing. The principal methods of leaching copper ores at the present time are heap, dump, in-place, and vat. A number of references are presented in the bibliography on the theoretical and practical aspects of these methods. In the heap-leaching method, crushed or uncrushed oxidized copper ore is placed on a prepared drainage pad. Acid leach solutions are dis¬tributed over the top of the heap, caused to percolate downward through the ore bed by gravity, and are drained from its base. The leach duration is generally a matter of a few months. Dump leaching is used to recover copper from very low-grade oxide-sulfide pit-waste materials. Here again, leach solutions are, percolated downward through a heap. However, in this method, little or no acid is added to the leach liquors, prepared drainage pads are not used and the leaching cycle is generally measured in terms of several years. Leaching agents are usually autogenously generated by the breakdown of sulfide minerals within the dump.

Básicamente, sólo existen tres tipos distintos de equipos de trituración para la etapa primaria. Estos son: machacadoras de mandíbulas, trituradores giratorios y molinos de impactos, y cada uno tiene unas características operativas propias. Las trituradoras de mandíbulas operan por aplastamiento de las rocas entre dos paredes, una fija y otra móvil, en una cavidad determinada. Han sido ensayadas variaciones en la caída y movimiento, pero la mayoría de las máquinas del tipo Blake tienen un ángulo de trituración de aproximadamente 27° entre las mandíbulas fijas y móviles. El principio de trabajo del triturador giratorio es muy simple. Si un cono es montado en un eje vertical y la parte superior del eje se sitúa estacionaria mientras que la parte inferior gira excéntricamente, el cono tendrá también un movimiento excéntrico. The Guillermo Gaviria Echeverri tunnel and its access roads project in Antioquia, Colombia is a mega infrastructure project that includes a road network with the longest tunnel in Latin America and several short tunnels, the latter being the focus of this study. The design of the project required careful consideration of several special factors, such as the tunnels’ steep slopes of up to 5%, high fire load of 100 MW, bidirectional operation, and short lengths that make it difficult to place ventilation equipment. The combination of all these parameters cause a challenging design problem for the ventilation systems and smoke control of the short tunnels. To address this challenge, a risk assessment study was conducted to support the design of a new and innovative ventilation strategy that deviates from relevant guidelines and standards, like the Austrian RVS [1][5][6] or the German EABT [8] in order to provide a customized solution for this particular project. This strategy resulted a cost-effective solution, that allowed a reduction in the number of required jet fans and at the same time reaches or reduces the risk level compared to traditional ventilation strategies.

Conveyors are a highly effective means of transporting material over long distances. Recently there has been a trend toward long conveyor systems with high capacity single flights. These conveyor systems are an efficient alternative to costly truck fleets. Also with deeper mines, the use of diesel driven trucks becomes more difficult. Another trend is in underground mining, where conveyors are an efficient alternative to drift hoists or dedicated rail systems.

Modern transportation systems are one of the most important achievements of our civilization and provide us with tools for broadening individual and social freedom of choice. The transportation system initiated today is handed dawn to the next generation, probably with little choice because of the enormous expenditure of monies involved, and influence their way of life as to where they should live and where they should work. The ever increasing antagonism between the citizens and the planners of the transportation systems necessitates a careful review of the entire planning process. The planning process can be broadly classified into: the goal formulation and decision making process; the plan development process; and the plan implementation process. THE GOAL FORMULATION AND DECISION MAKING PROCESS Goal formulation and decision making is one of the vital phases of the planning process and is primarily based upon social values. In measuring social values, the planner must employ an appropriate scale of measurement since in the absence of this yardstick, these values tend to became vague and abstract ideals. The need for major social programs and concerns (poverty, etc.) of the urban areas should be analyzed to determine the type of transportation system which would contribute to the solution.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, has developed a data acquisition system to continuously monitor radon, working level, absolute pressure, temperature, relative humidity, and air velocity. Data have been taken in intake and exhaust drifts, working stopes, and sealed-off areas of positive and negative ventilated uranium mines. Radon emanation rates, ranging from 1.7- to 12.2 x 2 10-l4 Ci/cm /sec were determined in four mines. The ratios of short duration, primary fan shutdown time to radon normalization time were 1 to 2 and 1 to 4, respectively, for-negatively and positively ventilated mines. Blasting and slushing caused radon increases of 160 and 67 percent, respectively.

The recently completed major modifications and additions to Reserve Mining Company's taconite concentrating process incorporate a totally new control system. Design of the new control scheme is centered on reliability, versatility, centralization, and optimization. The design objectives were achieved through a distributed control system based on a network of independent field located micro-processor based control systems connected to a central control room. Operation of each micro-processor can be interrogated and modified from the central control room by the operator or by either of two computer systems. The two computer systems handle logging, alarming, specialized sequenced controls, and complex process optimization routines.

During dusk, nighttime and dawn operations, effective illumination is a crucial component of safety for getting on/off mobile surface mining equipment and for preshift inspections. U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers examined whether illuminance levels could be improved for ingress/egress systems and preshift walkaround inspections of equipment using light-emitting diode (LED) area luminaires. Illumination and glare were key metrics evaluated. Although headlamps provided adequate illumination, LED area luminaires illuminated a much broader area compared to the narrow spot lighting of the headlamp. Hence, the use of additional area luminaires can increase slip-trip-fall (STF) hazard awareness and detection. Furthermore, a commercially available luminaire demonstrated better results than a custom LED luminaire relative to discomfort and disability glare.

Undercut-and-fill mining is a method developed by the International Nickel Company to deal with abnormal pillar mining conditions at one of its mines. Results have been such that its use has been extended to normal, pillar recovery operations in other mines of the Company as a replacement for conventional square-set pillar mining. It is anticipated that the method will also largely replace square-set stoping at INCo mines, especially for mining at deep horizons.

Attrition milling, once employed exclusively for the dispersion of pigments, has in recent years found a host of new applications in the area of mineral processing and mineral-pigment production. Broadly categorized, attrition milling is divided into two classes, as defined by the machinery's function, vibratory milling and rotational milling. Each mill type has been defined as a variation on ball milling and the terms, "vibratory ball mill" and stirred ball mill" appear in the literature. The primary design differences between attrition and ball mills are: (1) a stationary canister (or shell) (2) smaller grinding media (3) grinder energy is motor limited rather than gravity limited (4) strong media/feed size dependance.

INTRODUCTION This article describes the yellow cake drying, packaging and dust collection circuit of the United Nuclear Church Rock Mill. It also describes the layout and floor plan of this section as well as the operation and performance of the various equipment. In order to place the yellow cake section in perspective of the mill as a whole, the mill circuit is described briefly. CHURCH ROCK MILL GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Church Rock Mill contains six operating sections shown in Figure 1 in block diagram form. The grinding section consists of a semi-autogenous mill in closed circuit with a hydrocyclone. The slurry is then routed to the leaching tanks. Sulfuric acid and sodium chlorate is added to dissolve the uranium. The pulp is transferred from the leach tanks to the thickeners where the uranium bearing liquid is separated from the barren solids. The uranium bearing solution is then filtered and pumped to the solvent extraction section. [ ] In the solvent extraction section, the uranium bearing aqueous solution is brought into contact with an organic solution composed of kerosene, amine and isodecanol. The amine extracts the uranium from the aqueous solution. This organic solution is then routed to the stripping section, where the uranium is removed from the organic solution with an ammonium sulfate aqueous solution. The pregnant stripping solution now concentrated to 30 gpl U308 is routed to the precipitation tanks where ammonia is added to precipitate the uranium. The yellow cake is then washed in a counter current circuit of two thickeners and one centrifuge to remove impurities, mainly sulfates in order to meet specifications. The centrifuge centrate is routed to the second wash thickener for forward wash. The centrifuge cake at approximately 50% solids consistency is transferred to the yellow cake dryer via a screw conveyor. YELLOW CAKE DRYING, PACKAGING AND DUST COLLECTION Figure 2 shows the flowsheet of the integrated circuit of drying, packaging and dust collection. This section of course centers around the yellow cake dryer as the main equipment. The other main units are the dust collectors for the dryer and packaging respectively, a yellow cake storage bin and the yellow cake packaging facilities. Physically, all of this equipment occupies four floors, beginning at the top floor: 1. Both dust collector fans, the centrifuge and the screw conveyor to transport the yellow cake to the dryer. 2. The dryer, fire box and both dust collectors occupy the third floor. Figure 3 shows the floor plan of the third and fourth floors. 3. The yellow cake storage bin and dryer dust collector sump are located on the second floor. 4. The ground floor houses the loading facilities consisting of two load out ports from the bin to barrels, a roller conveyor loop, drum weighing scale, and change room facilities. Figure 4 shows the ground floor plan. Figure 5 is an elevation view of this section showing the overall equipment arrangement.

El modelamiento de la dinámica de fluidos computacional (CFD por sus siglas en inglés) implica la creación de un dominio de cálculo llamado malla o rejilla para resolver las ecuaciones que definen la física del flujo de fluidos. Este proceso comprende a menudo emplear la mayor parte del tiempo en esfuerzos de modelamiento. En un proyecto patrocinado por el Instituto Nacional de Seguridad y Salud Ocupacional (NIOSH), los investigadores de la Escuela de Minas de Colorado utilizaron un enfoque innovador de mallas, el cual permite una fácil adaptación del modelo CFD para adaptarse a una variedad de geometrías de minado de tajos largos ventilados por canales (bleeders) y progresivamente sellados (referidos a menudo como bleederless en los Estados Unidos), con la porosidad y la permeabilidad de la cámara escalables en un amplio intervalo. Canadian mining giant Teck Resources Ltd. will be the exclusive supplier of the metals used in the production of the more than 1,000 medals to be awarded at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Teck, the diversified resource company headquartered in Vancouver, B.C., is providing 2.05 kg (4.5 lbs) of gold, 1,950 kg (4,300 lbs) of silver and 903 kg (2,000 lbs) of copper sourced from its operations around the world. In addition to the raw materials mines, this year?s medals will make Olympic history as they will be the first to contain metals recovered from processing the circuit boards from end-of-life electronics (e-waste) that would have otherwise been destined for a landfill. After mining or production through a variety of smelting and recovery processes, each metal has been refined to enhance the metal purity.

A glance at the accompanying table reveals that for the first time in many years the industrial minerals field did not post significant gains in production. Gypsum, cement, sand and gravel, and crushed stone production-which are very sensitive to construction industry performance-barely managed to stay even, or in fact, declined slightly. Even barite production, in spite of increased oil and gas drilling, was off 5% in 1979 from 1978. Domestic fluorspar production continued to decline while imports, primarily from Mexico, South Africa, and Spain, rose 11%. Worldwide production of iodine (which is used primarily as a catalyst, animal feed additive, and in ink and colorants, stabilizers, pharmaceuticals, photographic film, and disinfectants) grew about 9% on a worldwide basis-from 10.75 Tg to 11.16 Tg. This does not include US production. The two US producers increased demand as apparent domestic production increased about 5%. Increasing energy costs and the transportation situation have had a prohibitive effect on the industrial minerals field. The critical shortage of railroad cars, according to consultant Neil Johnson, is due to several factors: • High capital investment rind interest rates needed to build new equipment, • Accidents, obsolescence, and failure to repair equipment reduced car availability, •Reduction in some train schedules due to fuel economy, and •Increased turnaround time as a result of new safety regulations. Railroad rates have increased an average of 7% per year for the past 10 years. Last year's increases were about 11.1% due to fuel costs and surcharges. Truck shipments have increased their penetration in certain areas of the southeast because of the shortage of box cars and the producers' demand for quick shipment. Some producers report a 15-20% increase in truck use. In the feldspar-mica area, which formerly made most shipments by rail, trucks are now used for about half the shipments. Marketing prices, as expected, increased due to higher costs for energy, power, labor, and supplies used in production. Estimated average price increases were about 10% which, in many cases, did not cover increased production costs. These factors-rising energy costs and the critical transportation situation-resulted in an unsatisfactory year for industrial minerals. Stanley J. Lefond Cnntrihuting Editor

Each year hundreds of mine workers are involved in machinery-related accidents. Many of these accidents involve inadequate or improper use of lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. To mitigate the occurrence of these accidents, new safety methods are needed to monitor access to hazardous areas around operating machinery, improve documentation/monitoring of maintenance that requires shutdown of the machinery, and prevent unexpected startup or movement during machine maintenance activities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently researching the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide intelligent machine monitoring as part of a comprehensive LOTO program. This paper introduces NIOSH’s implementation of an IoT-based intelligent machine monitoring system to improve safety during operation and maintenance at a concrete batch plant. INTRODUCTION Of the hundreds of machinery-related accidents occurring every year in the mining industry, incidents involving stationary machinery at surface mines continue to be amongst the most frequent [1]. A National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) study showed that the majority of fatal accidents involving stationary machinery at surface mines occurred at sand and gravel (38%) and stone (26%) operations. Of these accidents, entanglement in conveyor components were the most common cause of fatal accidents (48%) [2]. The same study stated that one-third of these accidents involved improper lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures as a contributing factor. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) acknowledged this problem, stating in a recent request for information (RFI) [3]: “Since 2007, there have been 17 fatalities related to working near or around belt conveyors, of which 76 percent were related to miners becoming entangled in belt drives, belt rollers, and discharge points. Factors that contribute to entanglement hazards include inadequate or missing guards, inadequate or an insufficient number of crossovers in strategic locations, and/or inappropriate lock out/tag out procedures. Systems that can sense a miner's presence in hazardous locations; ensure that machine guards are properly secured in place; and/or ensure machines are properly locked out and tagged out during maintenance would reduce fatalities [3].” In response to this problem, NIOSH’s Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) is exploring the potential application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide cost-effective intelligent machine monitoring systems for improved worker safety [4, 5]. SMRD partnered with Central Pre-mix CRH Company (Central Pre-mix) to develop and install a proof-of-concept wireless IoT solution to monitor machinery and conveyors during operation and maintenance. The primary goals of the system were to provide real-time monitoring of access points and facilitate the planning and execution of LOTO procedures
