The Rondout-West Branch Bypass Tunnel is being built to bypass a substantial leak in New York City’s primary water supply tunnel. The 13,500 foot long tunnel travels 600 feet under the Hudson River through the same troubled geology and high pressure water inflows that the original tunnel did in the 1940s. A Robbins TBM traversed this geology and built gasketed segments. Nine thousand two hundred feet of 16 foot diameter interliner was installed and backfilled within the segments. Finally, reinforced cast in place lining was placed. This paper addresses the challenges and the multi-tasking approach the contractor utilized.

Spokane Research Center personnel have been investigating the use of seismic tomography to monitor the behavior of a rock mass, detect hazardous ground conditions, and assess the mechanical integrity of a rock mass affected by mining. Seismic tomography can be a valuable tool for determining relative stress in deep ( > 1220 m) underground pillars. If high-stress areas are detected, they can be destressed prior to development or avoided. High-stress areas can be monitored with successive seismic surveys to determine if stress decreases to a level where development can be initiated safely. There are several benefits to using seismic tomography to identify high stress in deep underground pillars. The technique is reliable, cost-effective, efficient, and non-invasive. Also, investigators can monitor large rock masses, as well as monitor pillars during the mining cycle. By identifying areas of high stress, engineers will be able to assure that miners are working in a safer environment.

The Kubota surface melting system has been under development since 1975. It has found commercial application on the melting of municipal sludge, and ash from solid waste. The melted product has physical properties allowing its use as a substitute for aggregate in cement and asphaltic construction. This paper describes the surface melting system, its current use and anticipated future use.

Domestic production of industrial sand and gravel in 2004 was about 29 Mt (32 million st), a 6-percent increase from 2003. This increase was buoyed by a robust construction sector of the U.S. economy. U.S. apparent consumption was 30.3 Mt (33.3 million st) in 2004, an in-crease from 2003. Imports were about 490 kt (540,000 st) in 2004, an 11-percent increase from 2003. Imports of silica are generally of two types. They include small-quantity shipments of very-high-purity silica or a few large shipments of lower grade silica that were shipped only under special circumstances (such as very low freight rates).

INTRODUCTION It was not very many years ago that tunneling machine manufacturers spent considerable time trying to convince contractors and mine operators of the advantages of mechanical tunnel boring over conventional drill and blast methods. Today there are few doubters left. There is universal agreement that, not only are tunneling machines here to stay, but the ratio of bored rock tunnels to blasted rock tunnels is increasing at an accelerated pace, and within the next twenty years I predict almost all tunnels will be bored by machine. I believe we are today at a very important mile-post in the development of tunnel boring systems. Felix Gaye stated in his recent article (1) "It is important to disseminate between the efficiency of cutting tools and the overall efficiency of the boring operation". Mechanized tunnel boring in the past placed almost total emphasis on the rock cutting and boring ability of the tunneling machine. With advancements in technology and better solutions to the problems of rock fracture, steering control, and structural design, the emphasis today can be placed on the total-system concept. Tunneling machine design, as one of the key elements in the overall system, presents many problems that are not totally solved today. These design problems are, in the most part, not related with rock fracture, but rather with criteria associated with the over-all operation.

Earlier this year, Simplot Phosphates achieved a safety milestone at its Vernal, UT phosphate operations. In March, the entire operation reached achieved seven years without a lost time accident. And the mine operations at Vernal reached the 1 million hours benchmark without a lost time accident. This million hour achievement has been 19 years in the making. This achievement reflects the mine’s strong attitude towards safety, the company said. Safety is an integral part of its culture and requires diligence and considerable work. Attention to even the smallest of details cannot be allowed to slip. This is a record Simplot Phosphates said it hopes to improve on every day.

Froth flotation is a widely used, cost effective coal cleaning process. However, its high process efficiency is limited to a narrow particle size range between approximately 50 to 600 µm for coal and 10 to 100 µm for minerals. Beyond this range, the efficiency of froth flotation decreases sharply, especially for difficult-to-float coal fines of weak hydrophobicity (e.g., oxidized coal). This study was aimed at enhancing recovery of an Illinois fine coal sample using a flotation column featuring a hydrodynamic cavitation nanobubble generator. Nanobubbles that are mostly smaller than 1 µm can be formed selectively on hydrophobic coal particles from dissolved air in fine coal slurry. Results indicate that combustible recovery of a -150 µm coal was increased by 5-50% for different size fractions in presence of nanobubbles, depending on process operating conditions. Other major advantages of the nanobubble flotation process include lower collector dosage and air consumption since nanobubbles are produced from air naturally dissolved in water and they act as a secondary collector on particle surfaces, thereby resulting in considerably lower operating costs. Radon progeny have been a health and safety concern for miners since the mining of radioactive minerals began. Through the ?nuclear age?, it has become better understood and the regulations have become more robust. Ventilation and control practices have improved, thus reducing miners? exposures. This paper provides an overview of radon in mining, the progress of the regulations, and discusses some of the uranium miner studies that contributed to the knowledge of the pathology of radon.

"When Dr. Joseph A. Holmes was named the first director of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1910, the challenge in front of the mining industry was urgent and profound. Just three years before the Bureau was formed, the United States’ coal industry saw a spike in fatalities, as 3,242 miners lost their lives, including 918 miners killed in 18 major disasters. Holmes, who is often called the Founding Father of Mine Safety, was charged with researching and finding new and safer methods to conduct mining activities as well as more efficient ways to conduct mine rescue to educate miners.The U.S. Bureau of Mines was dissolved in 1996, but the mission of the Holmes Mine Rescue Association remains intact, although the challenges have changed greatly.During the 102 years between its formation and the 2018 Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association & Holmes Mine Rescue Association Annual Meeting and Training Seminar in Denver, CO June 5-7, the mining industry has evolved to become one the safest industries in the United States, with an injury rate on par with school teachers and better than retail workers. The work of Holmes and the Bureau of Mines plotted a course for others to follow, and the fatality rate has plummeted to historic lows. However, those who work in the mining safety and health sector remain diligent to their cause and are slow to celebrate too much the accomplishments of the past century, focusing instead on the work that lies ahead.“The nature of mining accidents has changed and it is very difficult to make changes when you get down to the asymptotic part of the equation,” David Zatezalo, assistant secretary of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) told Mining Engineering. He was the featured speaker at the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association annual meeting’s banquet dinner and presented a thorough overview of the mission of MSHA and his goals as its top man.Nominated by President Donald Trump, Zatezalo was sworn in as the ninth assistant secretary for MSHA on Nov. 30, 2017 and brings with him a lifetime of experience in mining. During his presentation, he displayed the chart (Fig. 1) showing the dramatic improvement in safety that the industry has achieved during the past century, but he noted that, as the industry gets closer to its end goal of zero fatalities, it has become increasingly more difficult to cross the finish line."

Cu isotope fractionation in low-temperature aqueous environments has been well documented. Here Cu fractionation was applied to two distinct, yet related, mining problems. First, an exploration geology application, where copper isotope fractionation was measured in oxidized leach caps, chalcocite enrichment blankets and hypogene mineralization in three porphyry copper deposits located in the southwestern U.S. Cu isotope patterns exist in a vertical distribution within the mines, coupled with distinct relationships with the Cu grade. Second, a hydrometallurgical application, where copper isotope fractionation was measured in leach fluids, feed and residues from a quick leach test (QLT) on Cañariaco, Peru ores. The results indicate the relative proportions of the minerals providing Cu during leaching. Interpretations of the QLT test measurements indicate covellite is the dominant ore mineral providing Cu during leaching. Both applications clearly demonstrate the use of the Cu isotope technique to understand low-temperature aqueous processes involving copper.

"The use of gas, temperature and airflow sensors to monitor mine ventilation atmospheres offers numerous safety and operational bene-fits to mines. Detection of dangerous gases, changes to airflows and temperature variations are some of the obvious benefits of using at-mospheric sensors in mines. The prediction of atmospheric conditions between sensors however is potentially difficult, and gaining full cover-age a mine will require either many sensors or a method of extrapolat-ing and predicting atmospheric conditions between and downstream from a sparser array of sensors. A dynamic simulation computer model technique is demonstrated to predict time based changes to atmosphere conditions downstream from sensors. The dynamic model predicts the time based changes to conditions throughout a mine model by simulating the mixing, addition and dilution of gases and airflow changes in incremental time steps. The advantages of this method is that a real time overview of full mine atmospheric conditions can be viewed at all locations, even areas without sensors. In addition, with careful planning and consideration of potential contaminant sources, the number of required sensors can be minimized. INTRODUCTIONMine Ventilation Sensors The importance of continuously monitoring mine atmospheres has been recognised since mining underground began and the effects of harmful gases on human health were discovered. Through the 19th and early 20th centuries, coal miners would take canaries underground with them as an early detection system against life threatening gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane (Figure 1). The canary, normally a very songful bird, would become agitated, stop singing and eventually die if not removed from these gases, signalling the miners to quickly exit the mine (Davalle, 2011)."

Amphiboles are hydrated mineral silicates five of which occur in asbestiform habits as asbestos grunerite (amosite) asbestos, riebeckite (crocidolite) asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos] and non-asbestiform habits (grunerite, riebeckite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite). The asbestiform varieties are characterized by long, thin fibers while non-asbestiform varieties such as cleavage fragments form short fibers with larger widths. The U.S. regulatory method for counting asbestos fibers (aspect ratio [>]3:1, length [>]5 µm) does not distinguish between asbestos and cleavage fragments. The method biases toward increased counts of non-asbestiform cleavage fragments compared to long, thin asbestos fibers. One consequence of this regulatory approach is that workers can be erroneously classified as exposed to concentrations of asbestos (asbestiform amphiboles) above the U.S. 0.1 f/mL exposure standard when in fact they are not exposed to asbestos at all but non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments. Another consequence is that the known carcinogenic effects of asbestos may be falsely attributed to non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments of the same mineral. The purpose of this review is to assess whether amphibole cleavage fragments pose the same risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma characteristic of amphibole asbestos fibers. We identified three groups of workers exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles: two groups exposed to grunerite (Homestake gold miners and taconite miners) and one group exposed to industrial talc containing non-asbestiform tremolite and anthophyllite in St. Lawrence County, NY. In addition to assessing strength of association and exposure?response trends in the non-asbestiform amphibole cohorts, comparisons were also made with cohorts exposed to the asbestiform counterpart (positive control) and cohorts exposed to the mineral (e.g. talc) that does not contain amphiboles (negative controls). The cohorts exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles had no excesses of lung cancer or mesothelioma. Similar results were observed in the negative control groups, in stark contrast to the excess risks of asbestos-related disease found in the asbestos cohorts. The only possible exception is the twofold increased risk of lung cancer where exposure was to industrial talc containing cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite. However, this risk is not considered attributable to the talc or amphibole cleavage fragments for several reasons. A similar increased risk of lung cancer was found in Vermont talc workers, studied in the same time period. Their exposure was to relatively pure talc. There was no relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure measured as mg/m3 years and years worked. A case?control study reported that all the lung cancer cases were smokers (or former smokers) and attributed the excess to smoking. There were two mesothelioma cases among the NY State talc workers exposed to cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite, but talc is not a plausible cause because of too short latency and potential for previous asbestos exposure. The positive controls of tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos exposed workers showed excess risks of both lung cancer and mesothelioma and positive exposure? response trends. St. Lawrence, NY talc does not produce mesotheliomas in animals while amphibole asbestos does. In sum, the weight of evidence fully supports a conclusion that non-asbestiform amphiboles do not increase the risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. The dry grinding and leaching circuits of the Barrick Gold’s new Roasting Facility at Goldstrike Mine in Nevada, USA incorporate well proven technologies in a unique combination. During the design of the plant, every effort was made to utilize the best available technologies from the perspective of capital, environment and operating costs. Crushing is a two stage process using gyratory and cone crusher. Ore is stockpiled and then reclaimed to two parallel dry grinding mills. The double rotator dry grinding mills include a drying chamber, coarse and fine compartments and utilize a gearless motor drive (GMD) or “wrap-around”. In-circuit product transfer is accomplished with air slides and bucket elevators. Finished product separation is performed by both static and dynamic classifiers with the final product captured in baghouses. Recycle of unfinished product utilizes cascade chutes. The final ground product reports to two 2000 ton roaster feed silos. The two-stage oxygen flu-solids roasters with their associated gas train are the subject of a separate paper. The cyanide leach circuit is a standard carbon in leach system with circular swept screens for interstage carbon retention. The loaded carbon is sent to the existing Goldstrike autoclave plant for stripping and regeneration. Tails, after cyanide destruction, are deposited in the existing tailings dam with tails from the autoclave facility. Throughout the circuit, Clean Plant Design criteria were used to assure environmental compliance, ambiental acceptability and ensure worker health and safety. The commissioning and operation of the double rotator grinding technology has been very successful at Barrick Goldstrike.

Despite reef structures being relatively common in carbonate rocks around the world, tunneling experience in reefs is extremely rare. Impacts and risks associated with reef tunneling through these geologic features were also relatively unknown. A new reef was encountered during construction of the Lower Pogues Run Tunnel in Indianapolis, exposed over 5,000 linear feet along the alignment, resulting in adverse impacts on construction. Analysis of investigation data and construction from this encounter provide insight into the identification and characterization of reefs along tunnel alignments as well as the potential impacts on construction for future tunneling within reef structures.

Mining companies are continually looking for product-ivity and efficiency improvements with their equipment to reduce operating costs. This paper will review the results of a productivity analysis conducted at the Luscar Ltd. Boundary Dam and Bienfait mines near Estevan, Saskatchewan using a Computer-Aided Earthmoving System (CAES) installed on a track-type dozer. The CAES TTT system is a Global Positioning System that provides the operator with constant survey guidance. The study includes a productivity comparison between two similar test sites, one with the aid of the CAES system and the other, without. The CAES TTT system shows a productivity improvement of between 20 and 35% in the reclamation slope leveling application. Even with the CAES TTT system deactivated, some of the advanced features of the system were used to: retain terrain data for volume calculations; track the equipment position; and, accurately record and separate idle time from working time.

A number of forces are at work that are now having an influence on coal handling systems. Changes are occurring and will be occurring at an increasing rate during the next few years. 1. Environmental concerns will dictate that dust pollution and spontaneous combustion and its resulting problems be rigidly controlled. 2. Slurry pipelines will be a reality despite the opposition of the railroads because they are economical and make good business sense. Artifical roadblocks can only survive for a limited time. 3. Coal is now and will remain the most economic fuel, particularly for power generation. This is true in most of the developed nations not just the United States. Increase in demand requires a close inspection of transportation systems. 4. A projected major increase in the export of U.S. coals may never occur without major port developments not the least of which will be the ability to accommodate large ships without demurrage time now affecting such shipments at U.S. Ports.

Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited, one of the world's largest iron ore producers, operates a 3.0 million tonne per year pelletizing facility at Dampier in Western Australia. The plant produces pellets for the export market using a blend of natural hematite fines from the Company's two mines at Tom Price and Paraburdoo. Processing includes fluidised-bed drying of the ore feed, open circuit dry grinding, disc balling and pellet induration in a travelling grate furnace of Dravo-Lurgi design.

Several underground coal mining disasters, such as Upper Big Branch in 2010, have revealed technological and organizational shortcomings related to self-escape. Efforts to address these gaps have primarily been top-down, that is, identified and implemented by upper management or external governing bodies. In contrast, this study employs a novel miner-centered approach to identify perceived technological boundaries to self-escape. Using a semi-structured, scenario-based survey, we elicit direct feedback from miners about current, emerging, and hypothetical technologies aimed at improving self-escape during mine emergencies. The results show a general high usefulness rating across all 21 technologies in the survey. Miners who work underground (both outby and working face miners) appear to give higher usefulness ratings overall than miners on the surface and other locations. This work will be directly applied to a series of proof of concept and prototype studies on self-contained self-rescuers (SCSRs), refuge alternatives (RA), and communication devises aimed at improving self-escape technologies through miner-centered research and design.
