"Construction of the longest road tunnel in Mexico is part of Acapulco’s alternate roadway to the scenic roadway project. This article provides a brief summary regarding details of the construction since the project began. Work was done by skilled engineers and Mexican workers that includes outstanding execution of the work in an urban and tourist area. This project will have a strong impact on the steady development of the port of Acapulco.Project locationAcapulco’s Alternate Roadway Project is currently under construction in the city of Acapulco, located in the Guerrero state of Mexico. It is an 8-km (5-mile) long roadway that starts at the Icacos neighborhood, heading toward Acapulco’s airport, crossing a drill-and-blast tunnel that is 3,160 m (10,350 ft) long under Veladero Park, a mountainous area. The tunnel overburden reaches a depth of 380 m (1,250 ft) approximately at the central point of the horizontal alignment, and continues with a 4-km (2.5-mile) long elevated road to connect to the existing Viaducto Diamante toll road (Fig. 1).Tunnel construction has already been finished using two portals for drilling and blasting operations; Brisamar Portal on the west side and Cayaco Portal on the east side (Fig. 2).Geometric dataOnly two main excavation cross-sections were considered in the executive design. The first one corresponds to the running tunnel for a three-lane vehicle section, with crosssection areas between 120 and 130 m2 (1,290 and 1,400 sq ft) taking into consideration different geological and geotechnical conditions to be encountered (Fig. 3).The second one corresponds to eight emergency bays, each one 50 m (164 ft) long, laid down within the tunnel outline, located at 400 m (1,312 ft) from each one with excavation cross-sections between 156 to 169 m2 (1,680 to 1,820 sq ft), in accordance to geological and geotechnical conditions to be encountered (Fig. 4).The tunnel’s horizontal alignment is completely straight, having a small curve within the vertical alignment on Cayaco portal, because there were some differences in levels when tunnel excavation started. Tunnel slopes were designed in such a way that rainwater does not run down into the tunnel at any time."

NFPA 502, Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges and Other Limited Access Highways establishes minimum fire protection and fire life safety requirements for road tunnels, bridges and other roadways where access by emergency responders is physically limited. The 2008 edition of NFPA 502 represents the Technical Committee?s consensus of current best practice for fire protection and life safety requirements for road tunnels, bridges and similarly limited access highways. Research of national and international test programs, design guidelines and regulating standards was per-formed and considered in an effort to establish a singular, comprehensive document representing a recognized base threshold of fire safety in these type facilities. This paper provides an overview of the more significant revisions including the application of fixed fire suppression systems, guidance on tenable environment, protection of structure and dangerous goods transport.

Plans are underway to extend commuter rail service underground into downtown San Francisco. The Salesforce Transit Center (STC) was completed in 2018 and will serve as a new transit hub, including a commuter rail station after two future connecting tunnel segments are completed. The northern segment, known as the Caltrain Downtown Extension (DTX), which will extend the rail line from its current terminus at 4th and King Streets to the STC, is currently in Preliminary Engineering. The southern segment, the subject of this paper, is a 1.6-mile tunnel known as the Pennsylvania Avenue Extension (PAX), which is currently in the pre-environmental planning stage, with alternative alignments under evaluation including single bore versus twin bore options. This paper discusses project challenges, including highly variable tunneling conditions in soil and rock, a congested urban project site with limited space for construction staging, alignment crossings of large existing buried infrastructure, and complicated interfaces with future and existing rail operations.

On Feb. 16, 2012, the Polish coal mining company Lubelski Wegiel Bogdanka S.A. set the world record for daily production from a plow-equipped longwall, with an output of 24.4 kt (26,900 st) of coal from a single face. The company commissioned the first Cat longwall system at its Bogdanka Mine, near Lublin in eastern Poland, in March 2010 and within six months had raised the bar to nearly 17 kt/d (18,700 stpd) of cut coal. Since then, Bogdanka has continued to increase its daily output with a plow face that began mining in the new 7/VII/385 panel last October, taking the world record to new levels. In addition to the record output achievement, the plow face advanced more than 27 m (89 ft) at a 1.63-m- (5.3-ft-) cutting height. ?We thought this achievement would be impossible for any shearer in seam heights as low as this,? said Zbigniew Stopa, vice president of Bogdanka.

This paper describes some of the latest improvements that have been incorporated or planned by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company to reduce operating costs and improve pellet quality. The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company operates and manages mining, beneficiation, and pelletizing operations in Michigan, Canada, and Western Australia. This paper deals with the grate-kiln pelletizing operations at Republic, Humboldt, Tilden, Empire, and Pioneer in Michigan, and the Adams and Sherman in Ontario, Canada. Table I characterizes .each operation in regard to location, ore type, pellet capacity and date that pellets were first produced. All of the operations with the exception of Pioneer and Tilden, utilize downdraft-two-pass grate cycles of drying followed by preheating. Pioneer utilizes an all-downdraft, three-pass grate cycle which consists of three drying zones followed by the preheat zone. The Pioneer and Tilden cycles have been described previously. (1) (2)(3) Tilden utilizes a three-pass grate cycle with a stage of updraft drying, followed by two downdraft drying stages. Recuperation systems which supply hot gases to a drying zone from second stage cooling were designed and furnished for Tilden I. Tilden II will be identical. Empire IV will also be furnished with a recuperation system. The Adams grate-kiln system was retrofitted with a recuperation system. This paper will summarize some of the efforts that are in effect or planned for grate-kiln pelletizing systems to (1) reduce operating and maintenance costs, (2) reduce energy requirements, (3) improve product quality, and (4) meet environmental standards.

PolyMet Mining is developing the NorthMet property near Duluth, MN. Laboratory investigations have led to the development of the Platsol process to dissolve in one step the base metals (copper and nickel) as well as the gold and platinum group metals (PGM). To complete the prefeasibility study, a fully integrated, 10-day pilot plant trial was undertaken. The trial consisted of high-temperature (>220ºC or >428ºF) pressure oxidation in the presence of 5 to 10 g/L chloride (the Platsol process). This was followed by solid/liquid separation, gold plus PGM recovery from solution, conventional copper solvent extractions/electrowinning (SX/EW) and recycling of the copper raffinate to the autoclave. The concentrate tested during the trial period was a NorthMet bulk flotation concentrate. It assayed 14.7% Cu, 3.05% Ni, 0.14% Co, 26.7% S, 1.4 g/t (0.041 oz/st) Au, 2.2 g/t (0.064 oz/st) Pt and 9.9 g/t (0.289 oz/st) Pd Laboratory results were confirmed and, with minor adjustments of the laboratory Platsol conditions, the following leach extractions were obtained during the pilot plant trial: 99.6% Cu, 98.9% Ni, 96% Co, 94.6% Pd, 96 % Pt and 89.4 % Au.

Coal production in the United States increased in2004 by 36 Mt (39.7 million st) to end the year at 1 Gt(1.11 billion st), according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This was a 3.7-percent in-crease from 2003’s 971.6 Mt (1.07 billion st) (Table 1).(All percentage change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) Although U.S. coal consumption rose in 2004, not all coal-consuming sectors had increased consumption for the year. Coal consumption increased in the electric power sectors by 1 percent and declined slightly in the other industrial sector, while coking coal consumption dropped by 2.4 percent. U.S. coal exports rose for the second consecutive year, while coal imports again increased to record levels. Coal stocks declined during the year, as electric generators used their stockpiles to helpmeet increased demands and missed shipments. Coal producers used their stockpiles to supplement their production levels.

The Golden Grove Project area is located 220 km (137 miles) east of Geraldton in Western Australia (Fig. 1). The project is a joint venture involving Amax Exploration (Australia) Inc. (Amax), Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. (EZ), and Esso Exploration & Production Australia Inc. (Esso), each with 31 116% interest, and Aztec Exploration Pty., Ltd. (Aztec), with a 3 1/2% carried and a 3% contributing interest. The venture covers two significant volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits and some 40 km (25 miles) of highly prospective Archean volcanics. During the course of the past 12 years (to 1983), all four companies were responsible for operating the project at one time or another and all influenced the discoveries. The Gossan Hill and Scuddles deposits are typical examples of volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits associated with Archean explosive submarine acid to intermediate volcanic complexes. They are located in the northwesterly trending Yalgoo greenstone belt of the West Australian Archean Shield. Gossan Hill, located in 1972, is essentially a copper deposit with minor zinc lenses; to date, 97 diamond holes have delineated a geological resource* estimated to contain 13 Mt (14.3 million st) of of 3.4% Cu and 13 g/t (0.38 oz per ton) Ag in the main lenses with minor lenses totaling 2 Mt (2.2 million st) of 3.7% Cu and 17 g/t (0.49 oz per ton) Ag and 1.7 Mt (1.9 million st) grading 1.5% Pb, 14% Zn, and 87 g/t (2.8 oz per ton) Ag. Scuddles is a zinc-copper deposit with gold and silver credits. It *Resource estimate provided by Esso for inclusion in Aztec Exploration Pty. Ltd. 1982 Annual Report was discovered in 1979 and, to the end of 198 1, had been delineated with 42 diamond holes. On the basis of this drilling, a geological resource* of 26 Mt (28.7 million st) has been estimated in three coalescing lenses. The lenses comprise 7.5 Mt (8.3 million st) of 2.1 % Cu, 12 g/t (0.35 oz per ton) Ag, and 0.3 g/t (0.009 oz per ton) Au; 7.6 Mt (8.4 million st) of 0.4% Cu, 9.9% Zn, 73 g/t (2.3 oz per ton) Ag, and 0.7 g/t (0.02 oz per ton) Au; and 1 1.0 Mt (1 2.1 mil lion st) of 1.1 % Cu, 9.3% Zn, 8 1 g/t (2.6 oz per ton) Ag, and 1.5 g/t (0.044 oz per ton) Au. "GENERAL BACKGROUND/CONTEXT The £300 million Bond Street Station Upgrade project will provide essential congestion relief and step-free access to an important interchange and destination station in the heart of the London Underground network. In 2010 London Underground (LU) let a design & build contract to Costain Laing O’Rourke (CoLOR), with the works to be completed in early 2017. CoLOR’s lead designer is Halcrow-Atkins JV (HAT). The station upgrade works comprise the following principal elements: •,A new satellite ticket hall on the North side of Oxford Street •,Two additional escalators and stairs providing congestion relief to the Jubilee line platforms •,Four lift shafts to provide step-free access between the different levels of the station •,Additional stairs to Central line platform level •,Tunnelled connection to the Crossrail station immediately to the south •,Connecting passageways, including ten connections to existing station tunnels. To achieve this, an existing property at 354-358 Oxford Street has been purchased and demolished, and the basement deepened to make provision for the new ticket hall. From this basement two circular shafts have been sunk, providing construction access for the tunnelled passages and lift and escalator shafts. The tunneling is principally in the London Clay stratum, which is widely recognized as a favorable tunneling medium, although the deepest parts of the works extend into the Lambeth Group strata which consist principally of stiff clays at this level but also contain water-bearing sands. The majority of tunneling has been carried out using mechanical excavation and sprayed concrete linings but other techniques have been used in areas where SCL is not practicable.A key challenge for design and construction of the works has been spatial constraint, in particular due to: •,The existing underground station layout •,The Limits of Deviation for the works •,The small construction site at 354-358 Oxford Street •,Overlaying Third Party assets including Listed buildings, sewers and water mains."

Our industry has developed to the skilled, experienced and productive industry that we now enjoy as a result of the visions of great engineers throughout history, but, in particular for their visions in the last 1 centuries. Unfortunately for our forefathers, the technology lagged so far behind that these exceptional visions could not be realized for decades, sometimes for a century. All that has changed in recent time and many bold and visionary projects can now be constructed and operated because of dramatic advances in technology. Before, say, 1950, tunnel technology developed very slowly. However, technology is now developing at such a fast rate that planners and decision makers are challenged to stay ahead. Moreover, new technology will develop during the lifetime of any project that can dramatically improve under-ground space projects. One of the best examples of this technological advancement is that of closed-face TBMs which now make tunneling feasible in previously impossible ground conditions. Since it usually takes a decade or more to plan, overcome environmental and political issues, construct, and put into service major projects, planners and designers are challenged by the changes in technology that occurs during the long time span of planning and construction. This is particularly true of large infrastructure projects such as transportation, water and wastewater systems and other major underground schemes. Also, since the serviceable life of many of these tunnels is often over one century, planners must consider not only lessons learned from the past but also what new concepts and innovations may develop over an extremely long time. These and other issues create a great challenge to planners and illustrate the great importance of careful but creative vision and flexibility during planning of long-term tunnel and underground space projects.

Construction projects may be delivered under one contract package or multiple packages divided by discipline, geographic location, or other characteristics. Dividing the construction into contract bid packages is called contract packaging, and is a vital and strategic aspect of effectively delivering tunneling projects. The process of contract packaging considers many factors, including the type of project, location, and owner?s priorities. This paper describes the key facets of the contract packaging process used recently on several tunnel projects, reports, where possible, on the success of the process, and concludes with recommendations for applying this process to achieve the right contract package.

Slurry diaphragm walls are commonly used as both temporary excavation support walls, and permanent structural walls, for circular shafts and long rectangular structures (such as underground subway stations); however, they are not commonly used for more compact rectangular or square shafts. In these instances, a second wall is typically cast inside the slurry walls to form the permanent structure. This paper discusses the approach used on the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project in California to analyze these compact rectangular types of structures for static and seismic loading, and to determine whether or not slurry walls can be confidently used as both the temporary and permanent walls for two tunnel ventilation shafts.

This paper examines the intrinsic mechanisms of cutter roof by combining field investigation, laboratory testings, underground instrumentations, and numerical modelling. Cutter roof developed during the development of a set of longwall panel entries in a West Virginia coal mine was presented as a case study. Mining alternatives applicable to the mine are recommended. Cutter roof occurred in two other West Virginia coal mines were also investigated Detailed comparisons were made among the three cases. As a result of the extensive investigation, intrinsic mechanisms of cutter roof failures under various conditions are presented from the practical and theoretical points of view.

If one considers that prehistoric man's first house may have been a limestone cave, calcium carbonate may be the most timeless of all building materials. Fanciful history aside, CaCO3 has been used for countless applications in human habitats. After all, tine marble block and tiles have always been the hallmark of eloquents and style. Mortars and cements derived from limestone have held together the very blocks of our civilization. In modem times, synthetic polymers are blended with ground limestone to produce everything from pipe, floor tile, cultured marble and house siding. All of these miracles of our technology contain CacO3 of various sizes and in varying amounts. This paper will discuss some of the critical attributes of CaCO3 which make it suitable for the new building products that have helped increase our standard of living. The vehicle of discussion will be a residential, single family house.

The Lime Creek* ore body in northwestern British Columbia is one of the few commercial primary stockwork-type molybdenite deposits in North America. Others include the Climax, Urad-Henderson, Questa, and Endako ore bodies. They are mined on a low grade-high tonnage basis, and are open pit operations except for Climax and Urad-Henderson. Much recent geochemical research on both porphyry copper and stockwork MoS2 deposits has been concerned with dating of micas related to the mineralization and associated igneous rocks. The results appear to show that mineralization and the predominant magmatic events of the deposit are indistinguishable in age (1-5), except where dating has been in sufficient detail to resolve the analytical overlap (6). At Lime Creek, geologic information shows that the Main granodiorite, the major intrusive and dominant host rock for MoS2 mineralization, was emplaced and had solidified sometime prior to the introduction of MoS2. The first MoS2 episode is intimately related to localized bodies of kalialaskite which clearly intrude the older stock. K-Ar dating was undertaken to clarify the age relations between Lime Creek plutonism and the apparently younger hydrothermal event that began with kalialaskite.

The Lower Indus Basin deposits form a substantial unconfined alluvial aquifer of excellent quality. This aquifer contains basically highly saline groundwater, overlain in places by considerable amounts of freshwater whose origin can be traced to the present and historical courses of the River Indus. In the past the main source of groundwater recharge has been direct river seepage and water tables were generally deep. Since the establishment of a perennial irrigation regime however, deep percolation from the increased irrigation supplies has predominated and the water-table has risen to within a few feet of the surface. The river system itself is being progressively developed for irrigation and very shortly a situation will arise where the entire low winter flow will be utilised. Fresh groundwater will then be exploited to supplement the surface supplies, and at the same time a drainage system, mainly based on wells will be used to stabilise the water-table at safe depths. This paper discusses some of the methods used to ensure optimum-economic development of the fresh groundwater and describes the general design philosophy evolved by the authors firms for both irrigation and drainage wells, with respect to both well configuation and operation. Water quality standards are discussed in as much as they affect subsequent use of the groundwater. A few particular aspects are considered, including that of the values of the relevant aquifer constants, the construction of wells and the determination of screen losses. A major problem solved during the Lower Indus Project investigations has been the design of wells to-produce fresh water from layers overlying saline water. This solution is also discussed.

The occurrence and distribution of organic sulfur in coals may be investigated using electron probe microanalysis, scanning electron microscopy, and optical petrography. A general relationship exists between macerals and organic sulfur contents in individual coals: sporinite, resinite = micrinite, vitrinite > pseudovitrinite = semifusinite = macrinite > fusinite. With increasing organic sulfur content of a coal, the total range in organic sulfur content between macerals containing high and low organic sulfur contents likewise increases. Furthermore, the organic sulfur content of the vitrinite in most coals equals the organic sulfur content of the coal. For any individual coal, organic sulfur contents of macerals correlate inversely with reflectance-in-oil measurements, but the amount the organic sulfur contents vary between macerals cannot be calculated based solely on the coal's rank. Formation of pyrite following peatification has no effect on organic sulfur contents of surrounding macerals.

L. Alan Weakly, member SME, is a senior staff engineer, Exxon Co. Weakly chaired a Mining Engineering committee formed to solicit materials for six planned "personal skills" articles, to be used in ME this year. What follows are Weakly's introductory comments to the series. Upon graduation from college several years ago, I thought that I was sufficiently prepared to embark in my chosen profession. A short time later I realized that several years of on-the-job training was going to be required before I could use my technical training effectively. It never occurred to me that, professionally, I was seriously lacking in any other skills. My spelling could use a little upgrading, but this was not a serious deficiency. I have been very fortunate to have had two employers that recognized that their engineering professionals did lack other skills and made every effort to give them training to correct these deficiencies. The skills I am referring to are those in administration and interpersonal relationships. Most mining engineers and geologists receive very little, if any, college training in these areas. In addition, many companies do not provide this training and many mining engineers and geologists are unaware of their deficiencies. It is for this reason the subject of personal skills development is being introduced in Mining Engineering. The mining engineer or geologist can pursue one of two basic career directions, managerial or technical. In today's technically sophisticated society and highly competitive business climate, both orientations require administrative and interpersonal skills. Most of us are technically qualified and we continue to upgrade our technical skills. But many studies indicate that we, as a group, are significantly weaker in administrative and interpersonal skills than other professional groups. In addition, these studies indicate that engineers, in general, take longer to reach managerial levels and fewer do so. This series in Mining Engineering, then, should help readers strengthen and broaden their professional capabilities. In all industries, including mining and petroleum, economic analysis of potential investment projects is done to select the projects that will give maximum future value from the investment of available capital. Rather than looking directly at the future values to be generated by investing capital in alternate ways for economic decisions, evaluators usually use either rate of return, present value, annual value, a profit to investment ratio, or various break even analysis results to reach economic analysis decisions in evaluating alternative investments. Alternative economic evaluation techniques are used in industry to properly analyze the economic potential of various investment projects. "Discounted Cash Flow" analysis is the phrase commonly used to describe these techniques. Whether you want to analyze projects in mineral, petroleum, real estate, refining, pipe-line transportation, or any other industry, proper application of discounted cash flow analysis techniques enables you to fairly compare the economic potential of alternative projects as well or better than you can using any other project evaluation approaches. It should be pointed out that investment analysis generally involves more than economic analysis. Financial and intangible considerations sometimes are as important or more important to investment decision-making than economic considerations. Economic analysis refers to evaluation of the profit generating potential of projects, that is selecting which alternative projects will generate maximum future value possible from available investment capital. Financial analysis, on the other hand, relates to analysis of where money is going to come from to finance various projects. Regardless of the economic potential of a project, if financial analysis indicates that we cannot finance the project, it likely will be shelved for financial reasons even though it may be economically satisfactory. Many evaluators use the terms "economic analysis" and "financial analysis" interchangeably, but this author considers that to be undesirable. Unrecognized roof beam failures resulted in 69% of the falls of ground injuries occurring in underground U.S. stone mines from 1990 to 1996. Field investigations at 45 underground stone mines suggest that excessive beam sag or deflection is the principal unstable roof behavior characteristics associated with miner injuries. Laminated roof structures, common in most underground stone mines, allow the immediate roof to separate into distinct beams. The timely determination of roof beam deflection could provide stone miners with advanced knowledge of potentially hazardous roof. Existing methods to assess roof conditions consist of observational and monitoring techniques. Observational techniques include open drillholes, sounding, wedging, and borescopes. Monitoring techniques include scratch tools, extensometers, telltales, Miners Helpers, and Guardian Angels1. Miners have difficulty utilizing these techniques because roof beams are located an average of 8 m(26.5 ft) above the miner’s head in environments that are dark, dusty and noisy and these deflections are measured in millimeters of movement. To help mitigate the potential for falls of ground injuries to underground stone miners, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed the Roof Monitoring Safety System (RMSS) to aid in monitoring dangerous levels of roof beam deflection. If enough site-specific information is collected and placed on highly visible maps, individual mining operations could establish general guidelines for responding to specific roofbeam deflection occurrences. This would help in implementing a pro-active, comprehensive roof control plan for reducing falls of ground injuries.
