No doubt this question was asked of Denehurst regarding Woodlawn, MPI at Stawell, Golden Shamrock at Cobar, Western Metals at Cadjebut and Poseidon with the Big Pit. Whilst it is not possible to second guess the rationale behind Renison's strategic withdrawal from an operation that they considered to be uneconomic, the Renison/Mt Lyell deal has certain specific perspectives:

Phelps Dodge Mining Company (Phelps Dodge) is operating a pressure leach vessel (PLV) for copper concentrates at the Bagdad Mine facility in Arizona. This single PLV unit was engineered and constructed based on continuous laboratory testing, reaction chemistry and kinetics, and available pressure vessel technology. The challenge of designing for optimum process retention time, agitation, oxygen mass transfer, temperature and pressure will be reviewed in this paper. The PLV interior lining, agitation equipment and compartment configuration chosen for the PLV will also be reviewed.

The crushing and milling of mineral bearing ores can now be accomplished more efficiently through the application of WaterFlush technology. WaterFlush crushing has reduced capital and operating costs for the processing of a lead/zinc ore in South America. Similar benefits can be expected in the processing of other ores. WF cone crushers offer improved performance over conventional cone crushers. Performance improvements include the ability to crush wet and sticky ores, increased reduction ratios and greater production of flakier and finer products.

In many comminution circuits based on SAG mills, an operating cost penalty is incurred in terms of high unit power consumption. By the addition of a crusher to the circuit, to crush part of the so­called critical size fraction extracted from the mill charge, the power efficiency of the circuit can be significantly improved. Dominion Mining has now incorporated pebble crushing into three of its comminution circuits. The improvements in circuit performance have in all cases been significant, and in some cases dramatic.

For every million ounces/year of gold produced by mining and process operations, each 1 % loss to tails represents 10,000 oz/year of production sacrifice. Recovering this lost gold would generate aditional revenue of $3 million/year at $300/oz. Similarly, if the average recovered grade is say 0.15 oz/st, every $0.45/st reduction in operating costs will result in equivalent annual savings of $3 million. This paper describes the application of a technique to realize such cash flow benefits for milling operations.

Systematic planning of underground work is increasingly important in this era of advancement of rapid underground excavation techniques. The day when planning consisted of deciding which men would shovel and which would push wheelbarrows - and the answer to any problem was more men - has faded into the past. The modern underground constructor faces economic and competitive conditions which demand exacting planning, logistics and scheduling; the most efficient operating methods and equipment known; and realistic, comprehensive, analytical risk evaluation with adequate contingencies or other protection. Proper planning to cover all these elements - plus one other element: old fashioned "good luck" - will insure a successful underground project. Underground work, because of its inherent characteristics, is among the most risky types of construction. The forecasting of underground conditions is at this time only educated predictions based on sometimes faulty data, insufficient data, or no data at all. The predicted conditions of numerous operations have deviated far from the actual conditions encountered. Opportunities for error exist in profusion seldom present for surface operations. Other than this unusual risk factor, the planning for underground work does not differ greatly from planning for surface work. In planning and starting an operation there is seldom available the information or time to thoroughly analyze all unknowns. It then becomes necessary to develop a plan predicated on assumptions and trade-offs that appear to be safe and economical and to add time and cost contingencies that will provide some degree of protection. INTRODUCTION A rail rapid transit system called the "Metro" system is presently under construction in the Nation's Capital area. The agency responsible for the design and construction of the Metro system is the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, an independent tristate organization set up under an Act of Congress and financed by federal, state, and local public funds supplemented by revenue bonds. When completed, the Metro system will comprise nearly 100 route miles. About fifteen percent of this mileage is now under construction, while designs for the-remainder are in progress. The system is scheduled for completion in about eight years at a cost of approximately 3 billion dollars. The Metro system will involve nearly all types of construction generally used for rapid rail transit projects. About half of the mileage will be underground, comprising approximately 16 miles of rock tunnels, 10 miles of earth tunnels, and nearly 21 miles of cut-and-cover construction in earth (see Figure 1.). The remaining 51 miles of the system is planned to be constructed on the surface as at-grade or elevated structures. The system includes 86 passenger stations, 53 of which will be underground structures. Twelve of the underground stations will be large size chambers in rock while other underground stations will be constructed in earth as cut-and-cover structures. Thus, about one-fifth of the system will be designed as underground structures, namely tunnels and stations, in rock. In recent years a great number of papers have been presented at symposiums and have appeared in the literature relative to geologic prediction for rapid excavation and tunneling. Many of these papers describe research projects now underway to investigate tunnel site selection by remote sensing techniques, seismic holography, electro¬magnetic pulse sounding, optical scanning for structural features, and many other exotic geophysical techniques. While it is possible that this research will produce techniques that may prove to be very useful, it appears for the present at least, and perhaps for another decade, that there still will be no substitute for conventional exploration methods such as coring boring, geologic mapping, studies of existing wells, and proven geophysical techniques. Nevertheless, there is still room for tremendous improvement in the conventional techniques for geologic prediction in tunneling. These include: more rapid and accurately aligned coring borings drilled parallel to the tunnel alignment; improved geophysical surveys both prior and during construction; improved methods for predicting ground¬water inflows and water pressures, both of which can greatly influence the cost of driving tunnels. Geophysical techniques can also be ap¬plied to locate deeply incised glacial troughs or ancient buried stream channels that might cross the tunnel alignment. In the meantime, while some researchers continue their efforts to¬ward a breakthrough in new techniques for geologic prediction, it is recommended that other researchers direct their efforts toward sol¬ving specific problems such as accurately predicting ground-water conditions, determining locations of high geostatic stresses, and locations of major fault and shear zones.

The EUs? manufacturing and construction industries are vital to Europe?s economy. They rely heavily on a steady supply of materials which meet appropriate quality criteria and are available at a competitive price. The steadily rising global demand for (non-energy) raw materials due to increasing consumption in upcoming economies such as China, India and Brazil, is in some cases leading to rapid price increases, but also supply disruptions which affect the European industry chain. These considerations are at the basis of new policy initiatives that are being prepared by Enterprise and Industry Directorate-General in relation to the competitiveness of the European metals industry. Over the last year the raw materials supply issue has increasingly become the topic of de-bate among various stakeholders. In July 2006 the European Economic and Social Committee adopted an opinion on risks and problems associated with the supply of raw materials to European industry. It is therefore important to identify and analyse the future needs for European industry, the possible constraints and impacts on its competitiveness. The raw materials supply issue should also be looked at from the view-point of the EU extractive industry, which plays an important role in supplying raw materials to the downstream industries and which faces very specific challenges. Within the Enterprise and Industry Directorate-General the different factors that influence the competitiveness of the non-energy extractive industry are being assessed, in order to help identify policies and actions which could contribute to and enhance the competitiveness of the industry.

ROCKS outcropping in Elandsrand's lease area consist of quartzite, shale and lava of the Pretoria group and are underlain first by 1 300 metres of dolomite and then by the Black Reef series. This in turn rests unconformably on Ventersdorp and Witwatersrand rocks and truncates the basal member of the Ventersdorp Super group, the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR), near the northern boundary of the lease. The Ventersdorp Super group is composed of lava and varies in thickness from nil in the north of the lease area to 1 000 metres in the south. The VCR, less than 100 cm thick, dips 210 to the south east and lies between 1 786 and 3 386 metres below datum. The Oberholzer dyke straddles the north-western corner of the property and separates the dewatered Oberholzer compartment, over which most of Elandsrand lies, from the as yet undewatered Turffontein compartment. As so much of the lease area is covered by thick impermeable rocks, the water-bearing capacity of the underlying dolomite was expected to be low. The man-material (MM) and rock hoisting ventilation (RU) shafts were sited well within and above a gravimetrically determined 200-metre 'safe-limit' contour of the northern slope of the Gatsrand. Two pre-cementstion holes were drilled and the cementation rigs were placed within a 15 metre annulus round each shaft to seal any likely water-bearing pockets in the proximity of the excavation during sinking through the first 300 metres of shales and the surface water-table.

The valuation of known mineral re-serves entails the economic evaluation of the mining enterprise and the valuation of other assets employed, including mining and processing plant and intangible assets. A case study approach analyzes two reserve situations: ownership of reserves (phosphate rock), and leasing of reserve lands (kaolin). The appraisal of the physical property is outlined, along with the economic analysis of the operation. The discounted net cash flow approach is used to value the enterprise, leading to value of the reserves after correlation with other assets employed.

A control algorithm was developed previously for loading coal trains such that each car met customer specifications (Ganguli, 2001). In developing the algorithm, the effect of the variance of coal was not investigated. This paper explores the effect of the variability of coal on the algorithm using two approaches: theoretical analysis and simulation. Both approaches demonstrate that variance is not an issue when the customer quality specification is close to the mine average quality. However, when they are far apart, the performance of the algorithm improves with variance.

For the past two years, Tenneco Minerals Company has been evaluating a refractory, pyritic, carbonaceous gold deposit, Results from agitated biological oxidation reactor tests show the gold extraction was increased from 15 to 90 percent using microbial oxidation, Also, no preg robbing occurred after complete microbial oxidation. Three column biological oxidation tests were then initiated on minus 1/2 inch ore. Biological oxidation was discontinued in two of the three tests, These columns then were leached with cyanide. The maximum gold recovery was 62 percent. No preg robbing was observed,

Gold and silver cyanide complexes are presently desorbed from activated carbon by means of hot caustic elutions. These solutions may or may not contain additional sodium cyanide. There are several parameters which affect the rate of stripping. Some of these include pH, ionic strength, and tempera­ture. Stripping is conducted in recirculating (ZADRA) or once through (AARL) circuits. This paper describes the development of a new chemical eluant which increases the rate of stripping of both gold and silver cyanide complexes from carbon. Two case history applications are described.

The industrial diamond review arrived too late for the June issue. Since the economy is showing a resurgence of strength, diamond tool consumption is similarly on the rise. Tool makers indicate that sales are picking up. They expect that 1994 will see about an 8% increase. Fabricators expect this positive trend to continue through 1995. In the industrial sector, sales of grinding wheels, honing stones, cutting tools and the like are expected to grow 5% and 8% during the next year. Users still are buying only those products necessary for "just-in-time" production cycles.

This paper presents a theoretical tool used to analyze gold recovery problems at Dee Gold Mining Co. The first step in addressing the problem was realizing that lower gold extraction was linked to high silver grades, and could not be correlated to either the carbonaceous or sulfidic content of the ore. Analyses of metallurgical testwork, blasthole, and mill recovery data demonstrated that decreases in gold extraction correlatP� well to increases in silver extraction. Figure 1 illustrates this for 1991 mill operations. This was the starting point for the work described in this paper.

This paper focuses upon the changing character of the market for Western bentonite, and upon transportation methods and costs affecting this market. The basis for the data in this paper, in addition to public sources of information such as federal and state government agencies and the open literature, was a program of 57 face-to-face interviews with individuals knowledgeable in the bentonite production, consumption, and transportation industries. The study was performed in 1974 and 1975 by Versar Inc., for the Bureau of Land Management, Department of the interior.*

In the author's selenium report of 1994 (1), the literature was culled for selenium removal technologies that had a chance of producing effluents with <10 ppb of total selenium. Very few processes could achieve such low concentrations. The EPA dictates such low concentrations. Discharges to fishery waters must be <5 ppb total selenium. The federal max­imum contaminant level ( MCL) for drinking water is 50 ppb. The EPA regulations are for total selenium, not for the species, perhaps because an approved EPA assay method is atomic absorption and it cannot distinguish between species.
