There is assembled here this morning in Chicago the heartland of America, what is undoubtedly the greatest concentration of Technical, Scientific and "CAN DO" knowledge ever assembled in America. The participation in this Conference by the representatives of so many nations is particularly impressive and is a further indication of the importance of the subject matter of this conference which you will be discussing in much detail during the next few days. Another impressive feature of this Conference is the participation of a large segment of the construction industry in whose hands fall the job of building what others design. Also strongly represented is the manufacturing industry whose capability is well known throughout the world. They have the resources to design, develop and manufacture the machines and specialized equipment needed to do any job which the world requires. You should not expect to gain any knowledge from my few remarks this morning as I am undoubtedly the least qualified individual in this room on the highly technical and scientific subjects you will be discussing during these next few days. However, I shall offer a few broad suggestions on subject matter which I trust may generate serious thought during your discussions.

Explosives research and development has historically been motivated by coal mining. Whether to solve safety problems or to improve productivity and cost, the result has been the same: better explosives products and initiation systems. Today, this process continues at an accelerated pace due to the tools presently available to the explosives and mining industries. Background Explosives have been used in coal mining since the industry's earliest days. Black powder, introduced into metal mining in 1627, undoubtedly was introduced into coal as soon as a need to replace pick work was apparent. Until the invention of the safety fuse by William Bickford in 1832, the only initiation methods available were the straw, quill and miner's squib. Disastrous explosions underground in England brought about studies on their possible causes (Atkinson, 1886). The studies showed that, while explosives contributed to the accidents, the real villain was coal dust, since that was the agent that transmitted the disaster throughout the mine workings. To improve underground safety, research was applied in an attempt to make explosives that could be safely fired in a methane air atmosphere. The Prussian government was apparently the first to establish a testing station for coal mine explosives. This occurred in 1885 (Guttmann, 1909).

The innovation in a technological field is reflected by the Research and Development (R & D) activity in it. It is explained why patent literature is a more reliable indicator than non-patent literature for the assessment of the R & D activity in the technological fields considered. Consequently the R & D activity is measured in this article through the patent applications filed in the fields considered. The pattern of patent application filings in Drilling, Mining, Tunneling and accessory technologies is analyzed at an international scale over the period 1990-2000. A statistical analysis of the fluctuation of the number of patent applications per year, per country and per technological field is performed. The technological fields are defined on the basis of the internal patent classification used in the European Patent Office. The article attempts to detect the high activity and ?cutting edge? technologies over said period, to relate them to political or financial events and possibly to foresee the ?cutting edge? technologies of the future in which potential investors could be successful. Strong patents are revealed on the basis of the frequency of their citations by the applicants in patent applications or by the patent examiners in the search report. International as well as specific national trends in the innovation are spotted and analyzed.

In some rural regions of Peru, artisanal gold mining is currently an essential activity as it provides an important source of income. In the Huanca region (Ayacucho Department) gold deposits are not attractive for mining companies due to their reduced size, but they have enough interest for artisanal mining because of the ease and low cost of mining operations. Artisanal gold mining represents an important damage for the environment, because operations related to amalgamation processes using Hg result in special environmental problems besides the typical ones commonly associated to all mining activities. A preliminary sampling has been made in soils, materials from tailing ponds and surface water of the Acarí River, at the site of the Huanca village, according to networks specially designed for the particular conditions of the area. Studies accomplished revealed high mercury concentrations in soils and tailings. Chemical analyses of soils directly collected in the area of the active or abandoned ?quimbaletes? show mercury concentrations ranging from 15.3 mg?kg-1 to 44.2 mg.kg-1. Mercury concentrations in soils decrease as a function of distance from the before mentioned sources. Water quality of the Acarí River that flows through the area does not present important changes as a consequence of the mining and processing operations.

SL-type continuous centrifugal separator with injection flow (Injection Flowing Film Centrifugation, IFFC) for separating fine and ultra-fine minerals has been developed recently in China and it is capable of recovering particles down to one micron in size. In this paper, the principle of its separation is discussed. IFFC is a special transient pulsating film which combines both thin film jigging and thin film concentration functions. It not only can intensify the looseness and stratification of the settled particles, but also create a hydraulic weir effect to improve recovery of fines and ultra- fines and significantly improve the performance of thin film separation. In a Chinese tin gravity concentrator, SL devices, SL-1200s (capacity 1.5-2.0 ton/hr) and SL-600s (capacity 0.5 ton/hr) were applied to treat -1 0 micron cassiterite slime(removed as tailings at the past) and to replace the old tin flotation system(-74+10 micron slime). The plant results show that 50-60% of the cassiterite can be recovered from -10 micron slime with an enrichment ratio of 10-12. Particle down to one micron were recovered. Under optimal conditions, the recovery from -74+10 micron slime can reach more than 85%. The recoverable size range can be determined by calculation.

Information gained at the site investigation stage of the Carsington aqueduct project led the designers to suspect that methane might be encountered during tunnelling and therefore gas detection techniques, including emergency shutdown systems, were introduced. After construction, on completion of the excavation and lining of the tunnels, a survey showed that methane was entering the aqueduct dissolved in infiltrating groundwater. General body air concentrations were very low but on closure methane concentrations rose rapidly within the aqueduct. A research project has now been initiated to investigate the mechanism of methane generation and entry rate into the system, the results of which are being taken into account in the preparation of future operating procedures.

A comprehensive critical review on the subject of sulfates-induced swelling behavior of lime-treated soils is presented in this study. Starting with the description of a well documented case study, the mechanisms behind the swelling behavior and the factors that affect this behavior are discussed. Then, the major experimental methods of sulfates content determination are briefly presented. Finally, an attempt is made to categorize sulfates level and equivalent risk for civil infrastructure. The paper indicates that limited work has been done, not only on identifying safe conditions for use of chemical stabilizers in presence of sulfate rich soils, but also on developing materials and methods to avoid, or at least mitigate, the problem.

Roller Press grinding has become an accepted technology in the cement industry, and finds a growing application in iron ore processing. Its introduction to the gold industry will depend on anticipated benefits such as a reduction in power requirements, the increase in throughput, and higher gold recoveries from the ground ore. The presentation highlights some of the specific features of the KHD Humboldt Wedag Roller Press and the effects of various operating parameters on the grinding result. Based on recent experiences examples are given on the use of the Roller Press in mineral applications. The anticipated reduction of grinding energy when using the Roller Press is discussed, together with the reduction in Bond Work Index.

For several years, Independence Mining Co. (IMC) has routinely used oxygen fluid-bed roasting to pre-oxidize refractory gold ores ahead of conventional carbon-in-leach (CIL) processing. Oxygen serves jointly as the fluidizing medium and the combustion gas. This technology has proven to be reliable, environmentally sound and cost-effective. IMC is a subsidiary of the Minorco group. The company operates the Jerritt Canyon (a joint venture with FMC Gold) and Big Springs gold mines in the Independence mountain range north of Elko, NV. Ore bodies in the range contain characteristic refractory ore. It requires pre-oxidation ahead of conventional CIL processing. This article describes the technology developed specifically to treat these difficult ores.

As the mining industry is enjoying a much needed and long awaited increase in demand for natural resources, consolidations in both the mining and mining service industries and a generational departure of experienced industry professionals is challenging today’s mining companies, not only in maintaining their existing operations, but also in securing qualified resources for developing new projects. These challenges are compounded for junior mining companies, oftentimes lacking in operating properties to draw from for experienced professionals and having to compete with the majors’ “mega-projects” for experienced project personnel from the reduced ranks of engineering companies. This paper discusses some strategies developed by Anatolia Minerals Development Limited in developing its Çöpler Gold Project in central Turkey.

An ongoing research program at the Colorado School of Mines is investigating the application of low to moderate pressure water jets to assist the cutting performance of drag type cutter bits commonly used on coal mine cutting machinery. The results to date indicate that a water jet directed to impinge the rock in the immediate vicinity of cutter tip can provide significant benefits in terms of reduced cutting forces, prolonged bit life and less airborne dust, as well as reduced tendency of sparking during cutting. This paper describes the findings of this research effort designed to fully evaluate and optimize the parameters affecting the performance of a combined water jet assisted drag bit cutting system for coal mine applications.

We have developed a layer-by-layer deposition technique for preparation of nanocomposite particles. Using this process, it was possible to make nanocomposites of various oxides with desired local composition and microstructure. The attachment of the shell particles to core particles was achieved using controlled polymer adsorption. Removal of excess polymer was accomplished without detaching the pre-adsorbed polymers by a specific stepwise washing scheme. The inherent chemistry of the process makes it easy to incorporate functional fillers over core particles. The nanosized filler materials will replace the shell particles in the present process and the polymer bridge would be chosen by taking into consideration the respective surface chemistries of various shell and core particles.

In designing a gold extraction circuit utilising carbon­in-pulp (CIP) technology a number of process options can be considered. These include various combinations of leach or pre-leach, CIP or carbon-in-leach (CIL) and conventional counter-current or carousel CIP (or CIL) circuits. Factors affecting the process selection include the project's sensitivity to capital and working costs, the project life, and the mineralogy and head grade. Each process option has it's own advantages and disadvantages. This paper compares both the financial and technical aspects of the flow sheet options. The flow sheet, design aspects and operating performance of Anglogold's West Wits No. 2 and 3 Plants which are leach, pump-cell circuits are described.

Simultaneous dissolution of mercury along with gold occurs during cyanidation of gold ores. A method has been found for the efficient removal of mercury from the gold cyanide solution by treating with dithiocarbamates which form stable compounds with mercury. The mercury concentration in the leach solution can be brought down to low levels by adopting this treatment. Furthermore, it is also possible to stabilize the mercury in the ore heap itself by addition of this reagent so that mercury does not dissolve in the cyanide solution during heap leaching. Only trace amounts of mercury were detected in the pregnant solution obtained from a heap treated with dithiocarbamates. In this paper, process parameters are discussed in detail.

Bioremediation is a complex process which involves mass transfer, chemical and biochemical phenomena. In particular, the adsorption kinetics of a substance by biomass may by model by taking into account: - Enzymatic kinetics type; - Combined kinetics - enzymatic kinetics at the same time with the Monod type biomass growth; - Chemical kinetics for substance adsorption according to Freundlich and Langmuir ad-sorption isotherms; - New empirical kinetics models based on experimental data. In this paper modelling of kinetics of bivalent lead ions on live vegetal biomass (aquatic plant Pistia stratiotes) as well as of hydrocarbons on dead vegetal biomass (pyrolysed nuts) is studied (Stoica, 2004). Modelling was carried out using experimental data and relative equations with an error of 5%.

Mine developers commonly undertake projects that require more funds than they can invest themselves. From that point until they are able to complete a "bankable" feasibility study, they require access to venture capital. In the United States, most venture capital has been provided to the small mining segment of the industry through tax advantaged limited partnerships. Recent changes in Federal tax law makes other forms of financing competitive, and the use of corporations and private and public offerings of shares may soon become more popular ways of securing venture capital. A number of new financial services firms have entered the mining finance business in recent years. They provide mine developers with access to venture capital.

Introduction Trying to synthesize innovations occurring in gold processing is not simple. At present, this technology is exploding, brought about by the high price of gold. This price has compelled the mining industry, as a matter of survival, to produce gold. The frantic search for gold deposits continues, from glacial areas to tropical jungles. The search has been fruitful. New exploration techniques have helped to locate deposits. Some are amenable to conventional processing techniques. Others are in unusual settings that challenge the ingenuity of extractive metallurgists. Ore deposits containing traces of invisible gold, refractory mineralization, and impurities and deleterious materials that previously defied treatment are now being profitably processed. Metallurgists have developed various processing methods and equipment for gold ore treatment that reflect differences in ore characteristics, grade, mineralogy, reserves, topography, climate, and location. These processes can be categorized as: • For nonrefractory or readily leachable gold ores - vat leaching, heap leaching, and agitation leaching. • For ores containing free gold - gravity concentration methods, followed by mercury amalgamation, and • For refractory gold ores - flotation, roasting, pressure oxidation, followed by cyanidation leaching. In actual practice, a combination of these processes may be required. This is because gold mineralization, although usually simple, may be associated with other mineral species or with clays that make the ore difficult to treat. Furthermore, after the gold has been solubilized to form a cyanide complex, one of two important processes must be applied to recover the gold. These ore zinc cementation (Merrill-Crow process) and Carbon adsorption, desorption, and electrowinning. New techniques for leaching and recovery are also advancing. These will become the bases for the next generation of gold processing plants. Nonrefractory Gold Ores Nonrefractory ores with readily leachable gold are among the .easiest to treat. Even so, non-refractory ores from epithermal deposits are likely to contain too much clay. When these ores are damp, they may clog the screens and cone crushers. Depending on the type of process, scrubbing the crushed ore is very effective in overcoming clay problems. After dewatering, the slimes enter the cyanidation process and the thickener overflow is stripped of gold values and recycled. Semiautogenous (SAG) mills are also gaining popularity due to lower capital costs and ability to treat wet, sticky ores. If properly sized, the secondary crushing and screening plants, together with a secondary ball mill, can be eliminated. When the ore is of such a low grade that it can not support fine grinding, vat or heap 'teaching may be applicable. These systems are being actively applied in the US and elsewhere. Rapid construction and low capital costs are important features of these plants. Vat leaching is ideally suited for fast leaching ores and small tonnage deposits located in areas with harsh winters or wet tropical climates. For effective vat leaching, the ore is crushed to less than 25 mm (1 in.), agglomerated with lime or cement to control fines, and leached with sodium cyanide solution (upflow or downflow). INTRODUCTION Cancer of the lung in uranium miners has been reported by many authors. In fact, it has become a most popular subject for comment by environmentalists, health physicists, and newspaper writers. I believe it appropriate for me to discuss cancer of the lung in uranium miners in a general way commenting briefly on etiology, incidence, tumor cell types, and particularly, tumor development and treatment. Cytological development of cancer in its incipient stages, particularly the in situ stage, relates to potential cure with photoradiation, early diagnosis, and treatment. Our observations of the cytological response to this modality of diagnosis and treatment will be discussed briefly since this area will also be covered by Doctor Balchum. The cause of lung cancer in uranium miners is primarily due to two carcinogens; cigarette smoking and radon daughter radiation. Cigarette smoking has continued at the same intensity over time among uranium miners; about 60% of the miners are cigarette smokers and 40% are non-smokers. Radon daughter exposure to the uranium miner has varied from mine to mine, but over the last 20 years has been reduced to a minor fraction (.3 WL) of the level that prevailed in many of the mines during the 1950-1960 era when many of the miners were exposed to more than 10 WLM. Sputum samples have been examined on as many uranium miners as responded on the Colorado Plateau since 1956. Autopsy studies were done whenever this was permissible. In some instances, only tissue from a biopsy of a node or lung was available for study. Smoking histories were also taken. Approximately 200,000 sputum samples were examined and histological examinations of lung lesions were made from 312 cases. METHODS The method of sputum cytological collection and preparation was reported previously. I The lungs were fixed with formalin and prepared for sectioning by Dr. Oscar Auerbach with his block-section method. RESULTS Three-hundred-twelve lung cancers from uranium miners were examined. The tumor types and the age at death for each type, smokers and non-smokers, are given in Table #1. The incidence of the tumors in the smokers and non-smokers is given in Table #2. The incidence of small cell carcinoma of the lung has decreased from an incidence of 76% of all the lung cancers found in uranium miners to 22% of these lesions (Figure #1). The decrease in incidence of this tumor is probably due to decreased exposure to radiation in the mines.

Gold is commonly associated with copper minerals, particu­larly in the more geologically recent rocks of Northern Australia, Chile and the Pacific Rim. Traditionally, oxidised copper-gold ores are selectively mined and processed for gold by cyanidation, ensuring that levels of reactive copper in the ore are kept low to minimise cyanide consumption; whilst sulphide copper-gold ores are floated and gold is ultimately recovered as the by-product from copper smelting and refining (La Brooy, 1992). Very few process­ing options exist for treating copper ores which cannot be selec­tively mined or floated, and for treating floation tailings which often contain significant gold (Muir et.al.,1989). The ammonia-cyanide leach system stands out as a unique method of selectively extracting gold without copper using economic levels of cyanide (1-2 kg/t NaCN) and ammonia (1-5 kg/t). Although first patented in 1904, it proved difficult to control and predict per formance with different ores. However, recent research and development in Western Australia by Ruane (1991), Hayes and Corrans (1992), La Brooy et.al.(1991), Muir et.al.(1993), Muir and La Brooy (1993), has led to an under­standing of the mechanism, and the commercialisation of the process at the Paris Dump (W.A.), Akjoujt (Mauritania), and in the Eastern Transvaal (Laxen,1994). Efforts are now underway to pilot and develop a tailings treatment plant at Telfer following successful laboratory trials. To date, process optimisation has relied on trial and error and large numbers of tests covering a range of conditions. Thus the results are specific to the ore. At Murdoch University, process optimisation is now focused on measuring and control­ ling Eh, pH, NH3 [Cu(II)], and Cu-CN species at the optimum levels identified from the recent mechanistic studies. In this way, the optimum composition required to process any ore should be readily established and maintained.

M. Gershon The article is an excellent one, providing a basis for the conduct of the major tasks in underground mine planning and scheduling. I object to only one word. Since that word is featured in the title, it is a strong objection. The word used erroneously is optimization. There is no optimization performed in the article. By definition, an optimization is an approach that yields the best of all possible solutions. We can limit this definition to its narrowest sense, the optimization techniques of operations research such as linear programming, or broaden it to include less sophisticated search procedures that find the best mine plan or schedule. No such claim is made in the article. No optimization of any kind is performed. The major tool used is a simulation, which, in truth, is probably more appropriate for this problem than any optimization. But simulation does not optimize. It only allows for quick evaluation of many options, leading to the selection of the best plan "of those tried," not "of all possible plans." This article, of course, is not the first mining paper to make this error. It seems that the word optimization is used more to impress people than to refer to any act of optimizing. It is used in a way that implies "try to optimize"or "come close to optimize," but not to really do it. It is usually appropriate to quietly ignore this error. But when Dr. Chatterjee, who has done so much good work in true optimization projects and whose work I have come to admire, makes such an error, it is time to publicly dispute it. Having discussed this very point with him in the past, I am sure that he will agree. If he can support this position in his response, perhaps people will start to listen and we can reduce the number of false claims of optimization. This should be easy for him in this case since the approach he used, simulation, is the more appropriate one anyway.
