In today's modern gold mining industry in Australia, and the world, more and more companies are recognising the competi­tive advantages gained by implementing an effective training program for operations (processing plant) personnel. Plant operators, or process technicians, are unique amongst all other gold mine employees. They are at work in shifts cov­ering 24 hours a day and their actions can have a profound effect on the operation's economic performance. To a large degree, the minute to minute decisions and actions of an operator can deter­mine whether gold is extracted to bullion in the goldroom or is discharged into the tailings dam. Experience has suggested that most small to medium sized gold operations in Australia, and even some large ones, have not implemented an effective training program. This is not attrib­uted to deliberate negligence or "anti" attitudes against training, moreover mill superintendents and metallurgy managers are technical people not oriented to human resource techniques. Usually the demands of designing, constructing and commis­sioning a gold plant overshadow the need for training in the first instance, In fact some well designed plants treating friendly oxide friable ore have little need for a dynamic well trained oper­ating staff. However, many plants do require a thinking team to optimise production and changing ore conditions towards the end of a mine's life can expose poor competence levels at large expense. Few managers will argue that training is a necessity and results in a win-win situation. The operators win by increased job skills, job satisfaction, clear career development and possibly better pay conditions. Trained personnel usually reciprocate with increased effmt and work ethic. The company wins also by having a thinking team which will maximise gold production and reduce operating costs.

Microprocessor-based balances are helping Keffler & Rose Coal Preparation Co. to test and ship coal faster than the competition. They provide a high level of accuracy in meeting Environmental Protection Agency standards and customer specifications .and help minimize "bad" coal. The combination of speed and accuracy has helped increase K&R's sales, while improving the company's reputation for meeting precise client requirements. The quality of coal that is assured by the company's testing-at an in-house lab using fast, precision weighing, and a computerized sulfur test-has assured K&R of a good price for its products. Recent EPA standards have strained the testing capabilities of coal suppliers. Companies involved with high-sulfur coal often use outside laboratory services that can take three to four days to report test results. Since the coal business moves much faster these days, some coal companies cannot afford that kind of time. Too much coal not up to specifications could be produced within a three or four day period. Keffler & Rose took a novel approach to this problem, installing its own in-house laboratory. The test situation immediately improved with this step. However, one bottleneck persisted for a time: the weight measurement procedure for ash, moisture, and energy content. The company first employed a mechanical balance that required time for setting up and taring. The balance provided readings on a conventional scale that was not very precise and allowed for error through subjective readings by the operator. The balance bottleneck was broken when K&R applied new technology to meet its needs: microprocessor-based weighing. The result has been a 75% reduction in weighing time and a sharp increase in accuracy. This has contributed to the test speed needed to keep up with 227-t/h production and precise K&R coal specs.

It is difficult to fail if one has a great deposit, but 'great' ore deposits are few and far between. More often one hears that a mine has been 'made' rather than found. This is particularly true for industrial minerals and for gold and silver projects. Even the best ore deposit can often be improved through innovative technology, e.g. the Escondida copper mine in Chile, where a novel ammonia leaching process is yielding a fabulous DCFROI. Consider the case of a small high grade gold mine. Previous owners had found inadequate reserves to justify the capital cost of developing the mine and installing a mill. Lower grade resources had been ignored because the owners were looking only for grades that would be high enough to support a small underground mine and mill. Randol, assisted by Kappes Cassiday & Associates, determined that the ore was amenable for heap leaching. Secondly, existing drillhole data indicated a significant lower grade resource that appears to be accessible to open pit mining methods. In this case, the appropriate selection of off-the­shelf technologies has literally 'made' the mine. At the Randol at Vancouver '94 conference on Latin American Mining Opportunities, papers on innovative technolo­gies for exploration, mining, metallurgy and environmental management were presented in non-technical terms for managers and resource developers. It was surprising how few of the exploration- and finance-oriented delegates participated in these sessions. Numerous technologies were presented that could be added to one's arsenal of tricks to 'make' a mine, i.e. to convert resources into ore reserves through knowledge.

In 1988 a major exploration program was undertaken to determine the characteristics of the rock and soil for a 7.6 m diameter sea outfall tunnel beneath Boston Harbor out into Massachusetts Bay. The diffuser discharge location had been mandated by the EPA to a 10 sq. km area of seafloor connected to the proposed Deer Island Treatment Facility by a 14.5 km tunnel corridor. Geophysical surveys, deep rock borings, and laboratory testing, provided the information for the conceptual design. The program identified the range in material types and parameters to prove feasibility of a TBM driven tunnel and to locate the optimum alignment and depth.

As indicated on the official conference program, this presentation in not a formal one, but a synopsis of the activities of a newly created Sub-committee of the Research Council on Underground Construction, which involves itself with small diameter tunnels. Because there is a dire need to develop a system of excavating small horizontal openings at shallow depths without interrupting traffic, it was hoped that a more progress report could be reported at this time. Because of ecological and environmental considerations, laws are being passed which mandate that all utilities be placed underground. In urban areas the excavation of trenches in which these utilities are placed has been done by disrupting the normal flow of traffic, thereby creating complete chaos. In addition, it always seems that the Companies involved have no coordination, since one company completes its installation and another one begins. Certainly, utility tunnels can be driven at greater depths to house main feeder and trunk lines, but there still remains the problem of installing distribution lines for house services. The definition of a "mini" tunnel, is a tunnel whose excavated size is approximately 48 in. or less. The objectives of the Committee are to "stimulate the development of systems and equipment to build tunnels in these size ranges which will reduce costs, time and surface disruption from current systems."

INTRODUCTION Tunnel boring machines in non-abrasive competent rock with little or no water have set new performance standards in the driving of tunnels. However, when the machines have hit blocky or running ground, they have encountered difficulties. The success of a tunnelling machine is usually due to a thorough geological investigation which accurately describes the rock conditions, a well designed tunnel support system, and a tunnel boring machine designed to cope with these conditions. In some cases machines have had to be modified in the tunnel after the machine had commenced boring, because geological conditions were not correctly anticipated before tunnelling began. The features described herein are not a panacea for all conditons, and some of them, like an auxiliary thrust system that thrusts off a precast invert segment requires pre-planning of work on the part of the contractor. CUTTERHEAD DESIGN Figure 1 shows typical cutterheads of ten to fifteen years ago. Note the large buckets and large openings between the buckets. These large openings were considered necessary to gain easier access through the cutterhead for cutter changes. The standard cutter in those days was an 11 inch or 12 inch cutter with small bearings, and was generally a delicate tool for the duty it was to perform. The improvement of mineral processing data using material balance computer programs is nowadays a current practice in many plants, engineering companies or research centers. It now becomes more obvious that such programs should integrate new features such as the preprocessing of data, the estimation of less accessible process variables and an in-depth interpretation of: the computed results. A few solutions to these new problems are already available. The feasibility of a mass balance computation for instance can be examined by analyzing the degree of redundancy of the measurements prior to any data adjustment. New variables such as chemical analyses in particle size intervals or liquid phase composition can be included in a set of measurements. Finally, a sensitivity analysis can be used to analyze the reliability of the results, to detect eventual outliers or to redesign a sampling scheme. Some illustrations of these new developments are presented.

Introduction 1300 BC, Egypt. Pharaoh, the god-king, owned all things. He was the only mine operator. As the provider of all things, Pharaoh had great expectations of his officials who gathered the wealth. Pharaoh's official, the mine foreman, was at a gold mine site to see that royal expectations were met. For the official, it could mean a promotion to the good life here and to the godly life hereafter. When he checked the haul for sufficient progress, a lot was at stake. The miner wore a loincloth, perhaps a headband and, if he was a prisoner, ankle manacles. Only an oil lamp helped illuminate the hot, dusty blackness. A fire at the base of the quartz ore face competed for scarce air. The ore so heated crumbled at the prompting of copper wedges. Confined to a crouch, the miner tossed chunks of ore onto a rope-mesh which, when loaded, was drawn up and lugged out. On the surface, the gold was ground to dust. Then it was transported by donkey caravan to the royal depot. There it was weighed, recorded, and distributed to workshops. Many minerals mined Egypt had gold mines to the south in Nubia and to the east in the desert and Sinai. Indeed, gold underwrote Egypt's prosperity. With a constant gold supply, fewer hungry hands robbed burial crypts and tombs. Gold was sacred, "the flesh of the gods." The shiny metal financed the army that policed the desert mining routes and guarded the gold caravans from Bedouin marauders. Gold theft was an offense to the gods. Anyone caught with gold `in his lunchpail,' so to speak, could say goodbye to life, both in this world and the next. In addition to gold, Egypt possessed other mined riches that allowed the Egyptian civilization to flourish. From Sinai and Nubia came copper. So abundant was the red metal that it enabled Egypt to become the supreme power, before the advent of iron. Also mined were amethyst, turquoise, feldspar, jasper, carnelian, and garnet. These were used for the rich inlay work that distinguished Egyptian jewelry and cloisonne. But Egypt's most endurable and awesome material was its stonework - for statues and obelisks and in temples, tombs, and pyramids. Stone quarrying was a vast enterprise. One expedition boasted nearly 10,000 men. These included 5000 laborer soldiers, 130 skilled quarrymen and stonecutters, and - egads! - even 20 scribes. In addition, there were thousands of officials, priests, and officers grooms. There were even fishermen, to provide the multitudes with the catch of the day. Mining methods detailed In 1300 BC, quarrying techniques had changed little since the age of the pyramids some 1300 years before. At that time, in 2600 BC, limestone was locally quarried and fashioned into the blocks of the pyramids. A basic limestone mining method was tunnel quarrying. A ramp was built up to the face of a cliff. A monkey stage was then erected on a ramp. While standing on the stage, quarrymen carved out a rectangular niche in the cliff. The niche was large enough for a quarryman to crawl into. With a wooden mallet, he hammered long copper chisels along the edges of the niche floor to free up the back and sides of the block. The quarryman climbed out of the niche and removed the stage. He then carved out a series of holes in the cliff face for what would be the bottom of the block. The quarryman pounded wooden wedges into the holes. He watered the wedges until they were soaked. The water-logged wedges expanded, splitting the stone along the line of holes. The freed-up block was then levered down from the cliff. On the ground, the blocks were placed on sledges. Men pulled these to nearby water transport. Without block and tackle pulleys, paved roads, and wheels, this was no mean feat. Each block weighed an average of 2.3 t (2.5 st). Whenever possible, the quarrying was done directly from the surface. This paper quantifies the detrimental effects of pyrite and stibnite on gold leaching kinetics. Means to reduce the effect of these minerals by addition of lead nitrate and oxygen are presented. A significant retarding effect was observed when the pyrite concentration was 20%. A pretreatment with lead nitrate reduced the extent of gold surface coating by Ag, Fe and S. Stibnite, at a concentration as low as 20 ppm, significantly affected the gold leaching kinetics through forming a passivating film of Sb(V) oxide possibly Sb2O5. The most practical way to alleviate the effect of stibnite is to leach the materials at a moderate pH with addition of lead nitrate. A low temperature reduced the efficiency of lead nitrate to counteract the effect of stibnite. The increase of dissolved oxygen is not favourable to alleviate the coating of stibnite on gold.

A mining project is proposed for the state of Pahang, Malaysia. The proposal involves the mining of a sulphidic ore body and initial processing to form a sulphide concentrate which will be transported to a roaster/acid plant for the production of sulphuric acid. An outline is presented on the potential environmental impacts of the project which have been assessed by superimposing project infrastructure and processes on to the physical, biological and social environment during the early design and planning stage of the project. The potential impacts eliminated by engineering design and the techniques employed are presented. However, there are a number of potential impacts that require careful consideration and planning for long term management. These include surface water drainage, waste rock leachate, tailings disposal and the social environment. Environmental management designed to minimise or alleviate these impacts as a result of project implementation concludes the paper.

Production of building materials such as are stones, sand, gravel etc., is characterized by a relatively low economic value and requires reasonable transport costs. That is why we are often faced, in our practical work, with the fact that within the framework of a relatively small area several open pits of building materials are, developed side by side while neither ecological, urban and spatial nor location factors have been taken into consideration. Numerous locations together with heterogeneous factors. point undoubtedly to the problem of planning the open pits locations for building mateials as a very serious and complex one. Even when certain localities are in question, it is rather a difficult task to present a real state and encompass all the, important location factors by mathematical model ling. This paper presents one of such models for solving the problem of selecting a location for building materials open pit.

Foster-Miller has recently developed a new concept.for a highly specialized shaft lining system. This innovative shaft lining system uses a continuous slipforming placement technique. lining the shaft from the bottom up such as in a raised bored shaft. Although this part is not unique, the concept is designed to use polyurethane foam instead of concrete for the liner material. Furthermore, the concept is designed to attain rates of advance of 30 m/hr. The polyurethane foam liner is designed to be thinner (100 mm) than a conventional concrete liner (300 mm). It will eliminate the high cost associated with the erection and operation of an on-site concrete batch plant. The system will be designed to be operated remotely, requiring few personnel for its operation. This system (or parts of it) may be appropriate where fast construction speed is required or where a jointless liner is needed.

The history of mining-industry regulations on cyanide indicates a trend to set criteria based on generalized inferences related to its high toxicity. As toxic-inventory-motivated regulations are framed, material balances are expected to imply atmospheric releases of HCN as a major factor. A review of atmospheric data shows the probable triviality of any environmental impact of such releases, and suggests a very deliberate approach to any proposed regulations regarding these emissions.

I wish to submit this discussion item on an article published in the August issue of MINING ENGINEERING by Wala and Altman on the use of canonical diagrams for mine ventilation networks. The advent of computer graphics and plotting has enabled complex underground mine layouts to be displayed and plotted in a variety of three-dimensional formats that very closely represent the actual mine layout. This enables the ventilation engineer, who is familiar with the mine, to display the network pressures, quantities, resistances, and fan locations in a way that can be understood by everyone working at the mine. This is important if the ventilation engineer needs to discuss changes in ventilation with production personnel, or escapeway procedures with union personnel. While I can see some of the potential advantages in the canonical ventilation network diagram described by Dr. Wala, it appears to me that the fact that the diagram has no visual equivalence with the actual mine layout means that most mine personnel will find such a diagram almost incomprehensible. The authors have alluded to certain advantages with the canonical diagram. However, I find it difficult to see that these outweigh the fact that almost everything listed can be duplicated in isometric diagrams, and in a manner that is easily understandable to everyone in the mine from the miner to the mine manager. Perhaps the authors could show a clear example comparing an isometric with a canonical portrayal of a mine network showing the information that is immediately available from the canonical network that is not obvious in the isometric diagram. There is in this country a severe problem with the need for ventilation engineering and expertise to be used and accepted by mine management as a necessary part of mine planning. It seems to me that to introduce the requirement for further explanation so that management can understand a canonical network display will hinder more than help the recognition that ventilation engineering needs at so many mines in this country. However, I can see that the canonical approach does have its place in assisting the practicing mine ventilation engineer, wherever he or she exists in the organization chart for a typical mine. In this case, could the authors please indicate the availability of the computer program to compute and plot the canonical diagram for a mine ventilation network.

Cyanide is a significant contributor to the cost of producing gold. Any reduction in consumption that can be achieved through more reliable measurement and/or more efficient management of dosing rates can have a significant financial impact. An automated analyser, by its mechanical nature, is not prone to the variations of human operators, particularly notice­able from shift to shift. Reducing the standard deviation of the measurement (ie, reducing noise ), the automated measurement will give the metallurgist a truer picture of the underlying patterns of usage. The combination of automated analysis with on-line operation and a control loop provides timely information that is efficiently utilised in the management of the plant. Until the release of the Chemtronics On-Line Cyanide Analyser (OTA3000) about 12 months ago, the Australian experience with automated analysers (especially on-line) had been substantially negative. Since its release, the Chemtronics instrument has outperformed both manual titrations and other automated instruments, gaining an enviable reputation for accuracy and reliability in the process. The instrument is built around the technique ofpotentiomet­ric titrations, in which the potential of an indicator electrode is measured as a function of the volume oftitrant that is added to the sample. As the cyanide in the sample is depleted, the potential on the indicator electrode changes rapidly, producing a typical sigmoidal curve. The OTA3000 takes the first differ­ential of the curve, identifies the apex of the peak as the endpoint and reports the result in parts per million of sodium cyanide. The OTA3000 accepts the peak as valid only if it exceeds a certain minimum height. That minimum height is a programma­ble parameter and is used to optimise the relationship between sensitivity and the rejection of spurious peaks. The instrument will track cyanide trends through both positive and negative slopes of any magnitude, but it will provide a warning if it the slope becomes excessive, not because it affects the instrument but because it means that something unusual is occurring in the tanks. There are a limited number of conditions under which the instrument will produce a result of zero. In these cases the OTA3000 holds any output lines at the last valid result while it repeats the titration. This feature was incorporated for reasons of stability in a feedback loop.

Introduction Since its creation in 1910, the Bureau of Mines has conducted a wide-ranging program of research on mining technology. Over the years, the Bureau has perhaps become best known for its accomplishments in mine health and safety technology, a field that has been the object of much public attention. Nevertheless, the Bureau's program in other areas of mining technology has always been strong and remains so today. A distinguishing feature of the current effort is its tendency to concentrate on high-risk, high-gain projects. Throughout the federal research establishment, the Administration's policy has been to phase out short-term research that could be performed by private industry, in favor of long-terms projects that industry cannot usually afford to fund. This tendency is evident in the following account of the highlights of the Bureau's current mining technology research program. Underground Mining Technology Fragmentation. Research studies on fragmentation have focused on nonexplosive concepts. If successfully developed, these concepts would lend themselves to continuous automated operation and reduce time and costs of fragmentation in underground mines. A special laboratory-scale device to investigate ripper cutting was designed and fabricated in 1982. Experiments were conducted with large drag cutters to develop an efficient cutting technique for hard rock. Tests were successfully conducted with 76- and 152-mm (3¬and 6-in.) bits in rocks up to 138-MPa (20,000-psi) compressive strength. Because of the success of these initial tests, larger-scale proof-of-concept tests are planned. To prepare for these tests, a tester capable of cutting a 1.8-m (6-ft) opening was fabricated. This device will allow ripper cutting to be carried out at full scale, and will also allow mucking and holddown requirements to be investigated. Preliminary estimates indicate that this concept has the potential to double excavation rates while reducing costs up to 30%. Mobile Hydraulic Monitor. A mobile hydraulic monitor system was designed, fabricated, and used to mine the St. Peter sandstone at an average rate of 22 t/h (25 stph) from a face in Martin-Marietta's foundry sand mine at Clayton, IA. A slurry transport system worked in tandem with jet cutting, resulting in a continuous mining and transport system. Problems with spray from the jet hitting the sandstone showed that a remote-controlled mobile monitor was needed at a station 15 m (50 ft) from the face, so the operator would have a clear view of the face and be safely out of the backwash. Crushers. Research on crushing systems to improve efficiency in underground mines is continuing. Final testing of a low-profile, portable crusher for underground applications has begun. A system for handling oversize feed to the crusher was conceived and tested. Underground crushing systems, portable enough to be kept near the face, offer considerable improvement in materials handling because main haulage by conveyor is often less costly. Hoists. Research to increase hoisting efficiency and speed and to reduce energy requirements has led to experimental ore skips. The skips feature guide rollers to improve riding characteristics, bearing improvement at critical locations, and weight savings of about 1.8 t (2 st). An experimental aluminum skip was installed last year at Kerr McGee's Church Rock mine. Performance is being monitored under production conditions. A portable service hoist for low-cost, efficient movement of men and supplies in raises between mine levels was designed, fabricated, and tested on the surface. Introduction Traditional aggregate sources - riverbeds and alluvial fans - located close to developing urban centers are being foreclosed to mining. As sand and gravel reserves are depleted, nearby production plants cannot secure additional, adjacent reserves and are being forced to close down. The sand and gravel industry, in many respects, is its own worst enemy. It promotes development, street paving, home building, and industrial and commercial centers. Economics make us favor developments close to our operations. Thus, we encourage development by our neighbors, who soon become our detractors. Current Aggregate Mining Problems Urban development is not compatible with sand and gravel mining. Neighbors dislike the view of pits and quarries, and they complain about dust, noise, and trucking. In general, the neighbors are not happy being close to an aggregate source. This is reflected in land use or zoning laws. In most localities, mining requires a special-use permit. Public hearings are required before a legislative body. If a large group of opponents show up, legislators will often deny the land use. Urban areas are seeing traditional close-in sand and gravel sites becoming no longer available for industry. A parallel situation is also developing in most urban areas. That is, the not-in-my-backyard attitude toward landfills. As urban areas mature; a significant amount of change takes place in the physical makeup of a city. Streets and parking lots deteriorate and need repaving. Curbs and gutters need to be relocated. This necessitates a place to dispose of excess, or old, paving and structural material. Since landfills have become at least as difficult to permit as sand and gravel sites, they are becoming remote from urban areas. A significant portion of the structural material that needs to be disposed of is concrete and asphalt. This material is heavier than other materials. Thus, the cost of moving a large volume of very heavy material to a landfill becomes very expensive. In California, dump truck transportation is regulated by the State Public Utilities Commission through minimum rate tariffs. A rule of thumb for estimating the cost of such transportation is once the material is loaded, the extra kilometer (mile) costs $0.09/t ($0.08 per st). Thus, to haul an 18-t (20-st) road an extra 32 km (20 miles) will cost about $32. Because of its remote location, the cost of hauling aggregates to the point of use in an urban area becomes excessive - about the same as hauling the material to a landfill. Here is a classic example for synergism. If we could save the transportation cost of heavy demolition material by disposing it relatively close to the central city (its source), and at the same time provide an aggregate source close to the central city (its point of use), two difficult economic situations can be solved. Thus, the develop¬ment of recycling concrete and asphalt. Mining Concrete and Asphalt There are two methods of mining concrete and asphalt. The first is to pick up the old pavement in pieces. Thin, cracked pavement can usually be lifted from the grade with a front-end loader. It will break up into manageable-sized pieces. With heavier pavement, it is sometimes necessary to intentionally break it up with a stomper or heavy ripper. The pieces are loaded into heavy dump trucks and shipped to the crushing site. DOUG HALBE: I've decided that we're going to change tactics here and we're going to be nice to people from now on. [Co-chair makes gesture of intense disbelief; laughter] I've also decided who's not going to be a co-chair next year. [laughter] We thought we'd get a couple of experts for our next presentation: some people with a lot of experience. We've asked them to tell us some of the things that all of you operators out there might be able to apply immediately to your plant. Our next two speakers have a tremendous amount of experience, and I think you'll find what they're going to say is highly pertinent to most plants. I looked through their paper and found some things that I could have used in the plants I operated in the past. Our first speaker is Terry McNulty. A lot of you know Terry. He was with Anaconda for a number of years as director of research. He then was president of Hazen Research. I'm going to continue with our new custom of saying nice things. Terry is the guy that I call when I don't know something, and he's always got the answer. SPEAKER: Who do you work for, Doug? [laughter] DOUG HALBE: Remember that we're being nice to people here, Joe. I know that's a stretch. [laughter] TERRY McNULTY: Thank you, Doug. I'm a little bit mystified by this sudden switch of tactics just before I get to the podium. Doug's been a good friend for a lot of years so I guess I do have to be nice. I won't say anything deprecatory about him, but I would have to comment that the observations made by earlier speakers have been far too generous. [laughter] During nine years of consulting as a mineral processor and extractive metallurgist, I have often conducted audits of the performance of client's plants. Usually these audits have been ordered by the plant management in hopes of identifying opportunities for improving processing efficiency or reducing costs. The kinetic parameters of the particular sizes were determined as a function of whether other particle sizes were present. From the data, a relation between the pyrite flotation rate and the particle size distributions was obtained. It was shown that the flotation rate constant (k) is a function of the size modulus (dt) of the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann distribution, and its variation may be expressed as k = a • exp(b . d,) for either individual size fractions or composite feed. Parameters a and b are dependent on the particle size distribution of the feed. Specifically, parameter a increases linearly as the distribution becomes coarser. The above relationship was also tested under conditions in which the collector (KAX) dosage was varied from 130 to 278 g/t. It was shown that the established relation was not dependent on the collector dosage.

Heap leaching in certain parts of the world, such as Chile's Atacama Desert, brings unique design problems in the form of possible large differential settlements of the foundation soils due to the dissolution of salts. In northern Chile the soils often c?ntain very high concentrations of soluble salts (nitrates, potas­smm, magnesium, and common sodium). When a leak in the liner occurs, the escaping solution dissolves these salts and trig­gers differential settlement. If the settlement is great enough, the geomembrane tears, the leakage increases, triggering more dif­ferential settlement. The nitrate plants have experienced many occurrences of this phenomenon where a brine pond will under­go a sudden and complete loss of the impounded liquors. The authors present a simplified technique to quantify the differential settlement resulting from dissolution and provide a method which can be used to select a geomembrane with suit­able flexibility under axi-symmetric (multi-axial) load condi­tions to tolerate the predicted settlement.
