A traveler driving across desolate central Nevada to the Round Mountain property can easily identify with turn- of-the-century prospectors seeking a fortune, or at least an existence, from the high desert. But now a shadow passing overhead is as likely a sophisticated fighter aircraft from Stillwater Naval Air Station as a circling bird, and the famous trails west show only as historical markers along the highway. Even the approximately 400- km (250-mile) trip southeast from Reno or northwest from Las Vegas takes hours now, not days. And the camps of Round Mountain’s early prospectors have been replaced by one of the world’s largest gold heap-leaching operations. While Round Mountain’s uniqueness begins with its scale, it doesn’t end there. Consider the mine’s low cutoff grade of 0.2 g/t (0.006 oz/st) gold, made possible by a new dedicated (not reusable) leach pad. Also, the operation’s degree of automation means that ore dropped in the south crusher system is not manually handled until it is stripped from the pads. There is the bonus of a geothermal field that is tapped to heat the leach solutions in the winter. And, of course, there was that “unexpected” hitch expected in all mining operations. For Round Mountain, it meant buying a gravity plant to process the gold nuggets discovered last summer in a fault gouge.

INTRODUCTION Engineers involved with rock mechanics know the importance of discontinuities within a rock mass and their effect on its behavior when subjected to loads from structures or construction excavation activities. Various geophysical tools have been developed to provide comparative information on subsurface conditions, such as electrical resistivity, assorted seismic test methods, acoustic tests, etc. While these investigative means have proved invaluable in numerous situations, especially those where site alternatives are being evaluated, they shed little light on the difficult problem of quantifying the rock strength. For that purpose, a laboratory test program of samples obtained in the field is usually undertaken, often in conjunction with a variety of in-situ tests. While standard samples provide sufficient information on the rock properties, questions on the macro-structure of joints, faults, fissures, and their infillings often go unanswered. Presently, attempts are being made to incorporate into rock sampling technology new techniques which are directed towards providing better information on the incidense and orientation of discontinuities. One such device incorporates a scribe knife within the core barrel which scores the sample lengthwise as it is cored. The orientation of the scribe is known, thereby relating the bedding, planes, fractures, etc. to a spatial framework. A second approach, called the Integral Sampling Method, is the subject of this paper. This review summarizes three sets of ongoing studies which we are performing in collaboration with a number of researchers associated with the Dept. of Interior - Generic Mineral Technology Center for the Study of Respirable Dusts, concerning surfactant-particle interactions studied using this surrogate surfactant. These topics are: (A) the suppression of mineral particle cytotoxic potential by DPL adsorption and the persistence of this effect under conditions of enzymatic digestion; (B) surfactant suppression of organic particle cytotoxicity by DPL adsorption and the effect on subsequent expression of genotoxic potential; (C) potential effects of surfactant on heterogeneous structured complex respirable particles. The references list some of our reports which can provide additional information on these studies. Further, those reports provide references to the literature of the field and to the works of others on these topics. Deep lung airspaces, the pulmonary alveoli and respiratory bronchioles, are coated with a hypophase which is rich in surfactant biomolecules secreted by the alveolar type II epithelial cells. The surfactant is known to be critical to maintaining stable low surface tensions on the inner surfaces of the alveoli by forming a surfactant layer on the airliquid interface of the alveolar hypophase. Upon deposition in the acinar regions of the lung a respired particle's initial contact will be with this surfactant coating over pulmonary tissue. A primary component of this surfactant is the phospholipid diacyl glycerophosphorylcholine, commonly called lecithin. A surface layer of dipalmitoly lecithin on saline will act much as full pulmonary surfactant in decreasing surface tension and producing a hysteresis in surface tension behavior with surface area. We have used dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine, or dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL), a major component of that surfactant, dispersed in physiologic saline as a surrogate for studying interactions of both mineral and organic respirable particles with pulmonary surfactant and consequent effects on particle toxic behavior. A. DUST CYTOTOXICITY AND LECITHIN SURFACTANT ADSORPTION Respirable quartz and kaolin clay particles are found to be comparably cytotoxic in a number of in vitro bioassays including lavaged rat pulmonary macrophage release of cytosolic and lysosomal enzymes, and red blood cell hemolysis as a measure of dust membranolytic potential. These direct and prompt cytotoxic activities do not account for the distinctly greater potential for quartz to induce pulmonary disease. When respirable quartz and kaolin are incubated with a dispersion of DPL in saline at 37C it is found that the prompt cytotoxicity of both dusts is fully suppressed as measured in vitro by pulmonary macrophage release of lactate dehydrogenase, beta-N-

Starting in 1967 two major hydroelectric power projects have been implemented in East Africa viz. Kafue Gorge in Zambia and Great Ruaha in Tanzania. The two projects have similar characteristics and each consists of an underground power plant, a dam in connection with the power plant and a reservoir dam. The power plants are both designed and constructed according to principles applied in Scandinavia for a long time. Each consists of a headrace of a horizontal unlined rock tunnel with a length of about 10 km, vertical penstock shafts, machinery and transformer halls in large rock caverns and a tailrace of an unlined rock tunnel with a length of about 1 km. The head of the power plant of Kafue Gorge is 400 m, Great Ruaha 175 m, the capacity is 900 MW and 200 MW respectively. Both plants were executed in one stage, but building and erection works were made in two stages. However, the power plants show some interesting differences in design. The power plants are briefly described in the following, special regard being paid to the excavation works. A highly respected coal mining company in West Virginia updated their stacker belt by switching to a new magnetic coupling. The savings they achieved are the subject of this paper. A steep incline and heavy belt loads are powered by a dual drive arrangement. The magnetic couplings were custom designed for complete fluid coupling retrofit and easy installation in the field. Maintenance personnel updated the drives in just a few hours. Over the following several weeks, adjustments were made to the couplings for optimum performance. Cost savings are found in reduced down time, no coupling maintenance, and equipment protection.

Introduction An earth science teacher at the junior high school level has the potential of working with 450 students per year. And these young people are at an age where they can be properly informed about the importance and necessity of a viable, domestic minerals industry. It was with this philosophy that a course was developed at Eastern Washington University for science teachers entitled, "The Minerals Industry of the Pacific Northwest." The two-week course is sponsored by the Northwest Mining Association and the Idaho Mining Association. It was first taught during the summer of 1971 and will be taught during the summer of 1986 for the sixteenth straight year. It is a two-week mini-version of the very successful six-week course taught at the Colorado School of Mines. In 1971, Russ Chadwick was President of the Northwest Mining Association. He suggested that such a course should be developed and offered at Eastern. It was determined that tuition scholarships would be necessary. This would ensure that a reasonable number of teachers would register for the course. Say a teacher has five classes a day, with 30 students in each class. Some 150 students come into contact with that teacher each term. With three terms a year, an instructor works with about 450 students per year. So, with 20 teachers in the course, it was possible that 9000 students a year could learn from our informed teachers. And now, after 15 years, more than one million students have learned about the minerals industry from teachers who have completed the course. The course is designed to take the teachers through all aspects of the minerals industry. Most of the lectures are given by the working geologists and engineers who talk about their jobs in the industry. This is extremely important for the credibility of the course. The teachers realize that the lecturing professionals really believe in what they profess. Industry fundamentals The course begins with a lecture on the need for minerals in a modern society. Most of the teachers do not realize how critical minerals are to every aspect of our daily lives. The lecture is followed by the US Bureau of Mines movie, "Minerals Challenge." During the next 15 years, US coal production is expected to double, with the increased production evenly divided between the East and the West. Along with greater production, coal export markets should increase dramatically from East, West, and Gulf Coast ports. The annual overseas export capacity of US coal-loading terminals is expected to rise from 147.1 Mt (162.1 million st) in 1981 to a minimum of 278.1 Mt (306.6 million st) in 1985, according to the US Maritime Administration. Increased coal production and use will lead to more development of import and export terminals, a vital link in the coal transportation chain. With continually escalating capital costs and the competitive markets that the terminals will serve, a well designed and efficient terminal is necessary. This article begins a two-part series that presents concepts presently used in coal export terminal design. Part I looks at site selection factors and equipment needs, while Part II will examine environmental considerations in building a terminal as well as typical capital and operating costs. The world is nearing the end of the oil era. In a few years oil will not be available to sustain the growth rate and increasing standard of living we have known in our lifetime. The big question is what energy era are we moving into? With the decline of readily available oil reserves and rapidly increasing prices, many countries are trying to switch to alternate energy forms. While intensive efforts to find new oil reserves continue, alternate energy sources such as natural gas, coal, synthetic fuels, nuclear, hydroelectric, solar, and wind power are being developed. Recent indications are that coal is expected to bridge the energy gap over the next 25-30 years until the technology and economics of the alternate energy forms reach satisfactory levels. Use of coal for energy is receiving strong attention due to its long-term availability (200-300 years minimum), relative ease of development, and its low cost per unit of power produced. By the year 2000, it is expected that 25% of world energy supply will be met by direct coal combustion and possibly another 5-10% by synthetic fuel from coal. Coal's expanding share in the world energy market, along with an increase in coking coal requirements, will result in a large increase in the world's seaborne coal trade. Recent statistics and projections for the future are shown in Table 1. This phenomenal development rate includes increases in both coking and thermal coal requirements. Because of the rapid increase of seaborne coal trade during the last 10 years and the even greater projected increase of trade to 2000, various sectors of the coal industry are faced with enormous technical challenges and huge investments in equipment, land, transportation systems, and port facilities. Very large bulk terminals are under development throughout the world. Latest surveys indicate that there are about 30 new coal export and import terminals under consideration and at least 30 existing terminals have expansion programs planned or underway. With the high cost of borrowed capital and rapid inflation rates there is great emphasis on new planning and design techniques to minimize capital and operating costs of coal transportation systems. Terminals A total coal supply system can be considered to consist of one or more mines; a train, barge, truck, or other haulage system; an export terminal; a fleet of bulk carriers; a receiving terminal; and possibly, local inland distribution networks that include barges and railways. Terminals, though only a small link in the total transportation system, play a key role in overall system efficiency. At ports or inland distribution centers, terminals act as transportation links bringing trains, ships, barges, or trucks together for cargo transfer and temporary storage. A well-designed terminal can provide maximum independence between two modes of transportation and optimum freedom for intermodal interference. A terminal acts as a buffer between the two transportation modes by providing sufficient storage capacity so a ship need not wait for its cargo on, for example, a train-by-train basis, but can load immediately from the ready stock. Similarly, a train need not wait for a ship to unload its contents but can dump immediately into storage. World gold production figures and the processes used for gold production indicate a high dependence on both cyanide leaching and carbon adsorption metallurgies. Problems associated with the use of carbon in the treatment of refractory ores as well as economic and environmental considerations associated with the use of cyanide point to the advantages that can be realized through the use of more efficient gold adsorption media and with cyanide recovery. We have developed a process termed AurosaveTM-1 which provides a number of advantages through the use of a new synthetic robust gold adsorption medium, termed Vitrokele TM V-911. This process allows further recovery of gold from a variety of ores and allows for a simplified process for use not involving thermal regeneration or high pressure elution. We have also developed a cyanide recovery process termed Cyanosave ™ which uses Vitrokele TM V-911 and allows efficient recovery of cyanides from decants or tailings and re-use of recovered cyanide. This obviates the high chemical expenses for cyanide destruction where environmental issues require such water and tailings management.

Ion flotation is a process in which ions of interest are complexed with a suitable surfactant molecule. A dilute solution containing these complexes is then aerated, under which circumstance the surface-active complex concentrates at the air-water interface and is transferred to a froth. The present work describes some of the phenomenology of this process and experimental work leading up to the design and use of a pilot scale laboratory facility. Early experiments suggest that selective recovery of gold can be obtained in a manner at least equivalent to conventional CIP processing at low capital cost. Under favourable conditions, upgrade ratios of gold ions of the order of 180: l have been achieved from reclaimed residue dam water with as low an initial gold level as 0.2ppm. Successful development of countercurrent ion flotation for concentrating solids-free gold solutions may offer a lower cost alternative to existing gold ore processing technologies, or in more secondary applications such as concentrating dilute gold solutions or heap leach runoff. The technology may also have more generalised applications to other heavy metal processing.

The following charts were presented at the Randol Gold & Silver Forum 2000, held at the Hotel Vancouver (Vancouver, B.C.) from April 18-21, 2000. It must be borne in mind that the "facts" stated and con­clusions drawn by the author were not as the result of a rig­orous technical investigation, but rather as a member of a journalistic team seeking a rapid view for presentation as news to a TV audience. Since the author's visit, some retrenchment on the part of the operators on estimating the cyanide content of the spill seems to have occurred. This does NOT alter the conclusions that (a) the spill was an intolerable embarrassment for the world mining industry, nor (b) the potential damage to future mining investments, should prompt action not be taken: 1. to understand the reasons for the dam failure, and 2. to draw up firm concepts of how to avoid future fail­ures of dams at mining properties containing materials that are toxic, environmentally unfriendly, or with as highly dis­comfiting a profile as cyanide.

Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority Section E8a consists principally of twin tunnels 1,713 meters (5,620 ft) long, excavated to a diameter of 6.35 meters (20.83 ft) using an open face shield, with a primary lining of four unbolted precast concrete segments expanded at the crown, and a full circle unreinforced concrete final lining with a finished tunnel diameter of 5.08 meters (16.67 ft). The tunnels, constructed in Cretaceous age sediments, are mostly in stiff to hard clay except for a few areas along the alignment that contain dense to very dense fine sand in the upper portion of the tunnel that created a mixed face condition. At two locations unexpected heavy water inflows produced very serious problems in both tunnels. Water flows in the interface area were generally more than 378.5 1pm (100 gpm) and reached as high as 2,649.5 1pm (700 gpm) in the mixed face ground. The nature of the tunnel inflows, the consequences, and the corrective measures adopted will be the subject of this paper.

Introduction The Bailey mining complex is located in Greene County, PA, in the Talley Run valley. It includes two Pittsburgh No. 8 seam deep mines (Bailey and Bailey No. 2), a coal preparation plant, and two refuse areas. Clean coal is shipped from the complex by way of a 24-km (15-mile) rail spur. It con¬nects to the Monongahela Railroad in Waynesburg, PA. In early 1981, Consolidation Coal Co. (Consol) began a permitting effort aimed at building the mine. Construction began in Dec. 1981, less than six months after the first application submittal. Clean coal was produced by the Bailey preparation plant in Sept. 1984. Several factors allowed quick permitting at Bailey. Effective project planning, including early formulation of a project planning team, and identification of red flag issues helped. So did innovative responses to environmental questions, and development of environmentally sound project designs. Forming a project planning team Consol management decided that Bailey mine construction had to begin in late 1981. A project permitting team was immediately formed to see that this goal was achieved. Team members included a project manager and personnel from Consol's engineering, environmental, and operating departments. Communications among all team members was crucial in obtaining the various state and Federal environmental permits. All project permitting team members participated in weekly meetings during application preparation. Discussions at these meetings ranged from recent public contacts, to application content, to environmental design considerations. Establishing a project manager was critical to the team's success. The project manager was responsible for seeing that permit acquisition, facility construction, and operation of the mining complex proceeded on schedule. The project manager had the final word, mediated disagreements, and frequently served as project spokesman to the public. Identifying red flag issues Red flag issues are those environmental factors with the most potential for delaying the schedule or stopping the project. The first red flag issue identified was organized local opposition. During the development of the Selby Coalfield, UK, a Robbins full-face tunnel boring machine (TBM) and a Thyssen Titan roadheader were used to drive a pair of parallel spine roadways. This paper presents a summary of the comparative operational and cutting performance of both the Titan road- header and the Robbins TBM. Statistical techniques were employed to identify relations between machine performance and geotechnical parameters.

This paper describes an application of a new approach to mine planning and production scheduling in a gold mine. The technique, limited to use in open pit mines (but not limited to gold), has been described previously (Gershon, 1987). The-computer program used is the HOPS software, which has been described previously as well (Gershon, 1988). The mine is scheduled for the production of 8,000 blocks out of a mine having 25,000 blocks (50 x 50 x 10). The technique is based on the concept of inverted cones (Gershon, 1987). While it does not provide a true optimization of results, it does approximate the optimal situation. As opposed to most scheduling software that only serves as a computerized notepad for the scheduler, the use of this approach allows for a scheduling intelligence to be built into the software.

The analysis for total cyanides (CN, or the cyanide due to the combination of free, weakly associated and refractory cyanide complexes) is required by most regulatory agencies for determination of effluent compliance. This method requires a distillation of the sample at low pH's and is most often sent to contract laboratories at a high time and monetary cost. This paper describes a new micro­distillation apparatus which allows for a multiple of CN,"' analyses to be carried out simultaneously saving both time and money. It can be used in the field, since only electrical power is required for the method. While not being appropriate for reporting values to the respective regulatory agencies as of yet, it is quite valuable for screening a large number of samples prior to submission of the samples to a contract lab for "official" reporting.

In the mid 60's Prochem & Hydrochem Development, it's research division, developed the high efficiency Maxflo impeller. Since the Maxflo impeller had a design that had proven to be very efficient in gas-liquid-solid contacting, it was a natural extension to apply this design to flotation & the research commenced in the mid 80's. An opportunity to test the energy savings occurred at Dickenson Mines in 1987, & comparative results with existing conventional flotation cells showed a marked increase in capacity, grade & recovery with 25% less power applied. This r success was followed by the installation of the fist agitated Flotation Colunm (5ft. dia. x 25ft. tall). Traditionally,relatively large gold mines in developing countries have relied on imported process plant engineering, design, pro­ject management and advisory skills. In 1995, there was a significant departure from this in Zimbabwe, when a locally based engineering company under­took and completed the construction of a one hundred and twen­ty thousand tonne per month capacity gold extraction plant for the treatment of sands/slimes residues integrated with run of mine ore. This paper describes the challenges of designing, construct­ing and commissioning a Carbon in Leach (CIL) gold extraction plant in a developing country, and discusses the various con­straints associated with it. In addition, the paper reviews the application of technology which is innovative to Zimbabwe, including the use of dewatering cyclone clusters, and two and a half tonne capacity elution/electrowinning convection units.

The Rogers Pass Project for C.P. Rail includes a 14.7 km tunnel and an 8.5m diameter concrete lined ventilation shaft to a depth of about 335m. The shaft collar is in bouldered water bearing glacial till to a depth of about 95m. Initial excavation in the overburden was with the aid of dewatering wells. When ground support problems arose the excavation was completed by a two stage freeze programme. Freeze holes were drilled from the shaft bottom. This most unusual method was successful in overcoming the difficulties safely and efficiently. The remainder of the shaft was sunk and lined conventionally. Finally, a central dividing wall was poured by jump forming from the bottom up. The wall was completed to a high standard at up to about 20 vertical metres per day.

Carbon technology has largely superseded filtration plants as the more acceptable gold recovery technology. This has, over the last two decades, provided a tremendous driving force for the development of new equipment. One of the main focus areas of this technological development is the development of effi­cient interstage screening systems. Several variations of exter­nal and internal screens are available, with the more recent shift away from air cleaned units to mechanically swept units. This paper discusses the development of one such mechanically swept interstage screen and how the development led to the suc­cessful implementation of a carousel type of CIP operation. The first generation Pump-cell emerged as a consequence of the success achieved with the mechanically swept NKM screen, The idea was to modify the screen to incorporate the functions of pumping, screening and agitation in a single drive unit, the screen generating sufficient lift for interstage slurry flow so that all contactors would be at the same level. This sys­tem was further incorporated as a high intensity modular CIP contactor, i.e. low slurry residence times combined with high carbon concentrations. A discussion on the kinetic gold adsorp­tion theory and its manipulation in the design of the pump-cell concept is discussed in a paper published in a previous Randol Conference< 1), Testwork carried out at Vaal Reefs proved the concept of the Pump-cell on a pilot plant scale<2), which resulted in the building in 1990 of the first large Pump-cell plant at West Witwatersrand Gold Mine designed to treat 340m3 of pulp per hour and , even though the plant operated successfully with respect to gold recovery performance, a few problems were experienced with the basic engineering design(3),
