The proposed technology of antimony calcine processing includes ferrochloride leaching of calcine, reducing solutions, hydrolysis of hydrochloride solutions with antimony oxochloride isolation, synthesis of antimony trioxide by SbOCl neutralization and its drying, regeneration of hydrolysis solutions. The optimum parameters of separate stage of process has been determined and the chemical character of process has been given. During the leaching of calcine we succeeded to transfer 92.16- 95.66% antimony to solution. On the worked out sheme we attained recovery of antimony to antimony trioxide near 90 .5% Antimony triozide contains 99.5% Sb2O3. The composition of sinter burdens for pigments preparation "Naples Yellow" different colours from brightly-yellow, yellow and lightly yellow has been proposed. Three-sulfuretted antimony-antimonic cinnabar have been prepared by precipitation of antimony solutions by potassium sulfur-bearing solution. The prepared compounds correspond to inorganic pigments for artistic paint. The amorphous antimony-ferrous black we prepared by aluminium cementation of hydrochloric antimony solutions. The ferrous black were used as artistic paints and for coating of metals by antimony.

The removal of carbonaceous material from Carlin gold ore has been investigated via froth flotation. The effect of type and concentration of various oils as flotation collectors and of sodium silicate as the dispersion agent on the overall recovery of carbonaceous material has been studied. Other variables affecting froth flotation efficiency were also examined closely. These included particle size, pH of the solution, and temperature. The effect of reduction and oxidation of carbonaceous material on froth flotation efficiency has also been investigated. This investigation showed that aromatic type oil was the most effective collector. Also found in this investigation was that oxidized carbonaceous material was difficult to float unless the oxidized portion was subject to reduction before flotation. More than fifty percent of the carbonaceous material was able to be removed via froth flotation. It can be concluded from this study that the effect of pH and temperature during the rougher flotation state is of little significance to the overall recovery of carbonaceous material. Since pyrite is responsible for the high consumption of chlorine, removal of pyrite is very important in order to reduce the overall consumption of chlorine.

Coal-cleaning operations commonly produce a fine-waste stream containing a considerable amount of coal. The recovery of this coal is normally not economical because the coal is mixed with large amounts of difficult-to remove clay slimes and is often heavily oxidized or contaminated. Conventional froth-flotation machines cannot, in a single flotation stage, produce an acceptable product from such material, and even flotation columns often have difficulty cleaning this type of feed. A new type of flotation column was designed specifically to deal with these problems, and a column of this design was installed and tested in a coal-cleaning plant in Ohio. The feed coal tested was the plant&apos;s tailings-thickener product. The coal was 80% -176 µm and had a heating value of 8401 Btu/ lb. The coal contained 39.8% ash, as fine clay, and 2.83% total sulfur. Because previous attempts at conventional flotation of this type of material had been abandoned, plant personnel believed that the coal was too heavily oxidized and contaminated for flotation to be effective. However, by using the new column it was possible to recover up to 85% of the calorific value in a product containing < 11 % ash, and it was possible to recover 60% of the calorific value in a product containing <8% ash. In addition, the bulk of the pyritic sulfur was also rejected from the coat.

I wish to submit this discussion item on an article published in the August issue of MINING ENGINEERING by Wala and Altman on the use of canonical diagrams for mine ventilation networks. The advent of computer graphics and plotting has enabled complex underground mine layouts to be displayed and plotted in a variety of three-dimensional formats that very closely represent the actual mine layout. This enables the ventilation engineer, who is familiar with the mine, to display the network pressures, quantities, resistances, and fan locations in a way that can be understood by everyone working at the mine. This is important if the ventilation engineer needs to discuss changes in ventilation with production personnel, or escapeway procedures with union personnel. While I can see some of the potential advantages in the canonical ventilation network diagram described by Dr. Wala, it appears to me that the fact that the diagram has no visual equivalence with the actual mine layout means that most mine personnel will find such a diagram almost incomprehensible. The authors have alluded to certain advantages with the canonical diagram. However, I find it difficult to see that these outweigh the fact that almost everything listed can be duplicated in isometric diagrams, and in a manner that is easily understandable to everyone in the mine from the miner to the mine manager. Perhaps the authors could show a clear example comparing an isometric with a canonical portrayal of a mine network showing the information that is immediately available from the canonical network that is not obvious in the isometric diagram. There is in this country a severe problem with the need for ventilation engineering and expertise to be used and accepted by mine management as a necessary part of mine planning. It seems to me that to introduce the requirement for further explanation so that management can understand a canonical network display will hinder more than help the recognition that ventilation engineering needs at so many mines in this country. However, I can see that the canonical approach does have its place in assisting the practicing mine ventilation engineer, wherever he or she exists in the organization chart for a typical mine. In this case, could the authors please indicate the availability of the computer program to compute and plot the canonical diagram for a mine ventilation network.

Compared to alternative ways of dealing with coal fines, oil agglomeration has always been a commercial bridesmaid and never yet a bride. Yet interest is high in the process, as shown by a number of pilot plants in operation that are funded by industry as well as government. In the past in the US, alternative ways to handle coal finer than 100 to 200 mesh included flotation, or no treatment except dewatering, or discarding the fines as waste. There are now a number of factors that tilt the economics more toward fine coal recovery. Today, the cost of mining a ton of underground coal runs from $22-30, and discarding even 10% as unrecovered fine coal is a real economic loss. A number of attempts (notably by EPRI) have been made to quantify the effect of coal cleaning on utility boiler operations. Transportation and ash handling costs, frequency of unscheduled outages, fouling and slagging problems, and boiler tube erosion are all lowered by cleaning coal. The advantage of coal cleaning on these parameters has been shown, but the dollar amount varies with many assumptions and is difficult to pin down. The message to a utility, however, has not been lost and the trend toward cleaner steam coal is accelerating. This may lead to fewer installations that only wash the coarse coal, and add back the unwashed fine coal until a maximum contractual ash limit is reached. And, as the proportion of coal fines continues to increase by continuous and longwall mining, it may become impossible to clean the coal sufficiently without cleaning the fines. Flotation and oil agglomeration are the only processes that presently deal directly with cleaning the very finest coal fractions. Flotation has proven its effectiveness in cleaning blackwater and in separating fine coal from mineral matter. It has the achievable potential for far greater pyrite rejection than is now obtained in commercial preparation plants. A technique that has been used for inspection and appraisal of rock tunnels is described. It enables a rapid and complete record to be made of those factors necessary for the engineering assessment of the rock conditions surrounding a tunnel. Full understanding of the regional geology, and a careful recording of data concerning the principal geological and construction factors is essential basic data for a tunneling project, whether the tunnel is under construction or is already in service. A methodical recording of data concerning general geology, shears, fracture orientations, spacing, persistence, rock classification, water condition, shear frequency, excavation method, blasting procedure, and rock stabilization and support methods, combined with a photographic record, can be completed by experienced engineers and geologists at the rate of over 1000 feet of tunnel per shift.

Environmental protection, economic prosperity and respect of the need for social equity promotion, constitute a prerequisite for any modern industry aiming to operate in a sustainable manner. The Natural Stone industry in Europe, a sector comprising mainly of SMEs, despite the fact that consists a dynamic extraction sector, often lucks the resources to apply novel techniques and management schemes towards achieving sustainable performance. I-STONE, an EU Integrated Project funded by the 6th Framework Programme, is aiming to contribute in the improved performance of the Natural Stone industry. A primary project objective is the re-engineering of the stone production chain, in order among others to considerably in-crease its efficiency and productivity, and minimise the amount of stone wastes disposed. The present paper, resulting from the research con-ducted on environmental management within I-STONE, is focusing on the use of sustainable indicators as a tool for the assessment of the stone industry?s performance. Based on Commission Decisions and reported studies, a list of indicators was selected and used within I-STONE, including environmental and socio-economic indicators. A set of selected environmental indicators were quantified based on operational data of a number of Greek and Portuguese quarries examined as case studies. The analysis indicated that an integrated strategy, including the application of novel operation techniques and equipment, waste minimization and systematic environmental monitoring and reporting, constitute key factors for the sustainable operation of natural stone industry.

Your interesting and well-written paper brings up the issue of the purpose or use of a mineral property appraisal, specifically the value of these evaluations when the quality and quantity of the mineral resource to be exploited have not been thoroughly investigated. I am not a practicing professional in regards to valuation of limestone investment opportunities. I simply wish to make a few generic observations about the appraisal process in order to stimulate meaningful thinking by appraisal professionals whose reports may be reviewed by professional investors and "laypersons" alike. It is my contention that the analysis given in your paper is very thorough, considering the data that was made available to you. But I would not like to be the person responsible for investment decision making without having a feel for the risk involved. Therefore, the reviewer must classify this type of analysis as relatively "subjective" because they have not received an indication of the inherent risk involved in exploiting a mineral resource. This risk can best be quantified by using probabilistic methods in conjunction with the quality and quantity of the mineral to be produced. Most appraisals passively ignore this problem. Specifically, you have accurately identified the various costs and values entering the economic appraisal process. These can usually be quantified with a great deal more certainty than the capability of the resource to provide 25 years of quality material. Also, in Cases A (West Virginia)and B (Alabama), you are fortunate enough to have previous operations data. What if there had never been production from these properties? How does a potential mineral property investor evaluate the resource capability to meet various projected financial outcomes without spending a good deal of up-front capital to drill and delineate enough quality resources for a 20-plus year operation. These questions pose a substantial risk to any potential mineral investor. Only probabilistic methods should be used to quantify this type of problem, short of drilling and metallurgical testing. During the production of silicon carbide a by-product is generated, which contains a mixture of crystalline and amorphous silicon carbide. Utilizing the difference in density, shape and surface properties of the crystalline and amorphous silicon carbide, separation tests were carried out with gravity concentration and flotation equipment. The flotation results of the fine fraction of the silicon carbide mixture were not encouraging. The processing of the coarse fraction of the silicon carbide mixture by jigs resulted in a high grade crystalline SiC concentrate with the desired specifications. The separation was largely influenced by the shape factor. An IHC-jig with a newly designed hydraulic drive was used to carry out the test program.

Discussion by G.F. Raymond Knudsen&apos;s study presents two curious conclusions: • The kriging of blasthole assays can systematically overstate mill head grades by as much as 21% as a result of unbiased sample variance. • No estimation method is able to reduce this bias to a small margin. The study is based on a simulation using real data and what are presumed to be actual variogram parameters from a real deposit. Although I have no doubt that the first conclusion (21% overestimation) is correct for the author&apos;s simulation, I do not believe this represents a realistic mining situation. Over the past 15 years I have done extensive comparisons between exploration drill-hole assays, blasthole assays and mill head grades on seven major open-pit mines, including some very erratic gold deposits. Commonly, nugget effects on blasthole variograms were 10% - 20% higher than on exploration variograms. And in one extreme case, the difference was 50%. Even in the extreme case, ordinary kriging on blastholes agreed well with the mill head grade over the long term. In Knudsen&apos;s simulation, the blasthole nugget effect is assumed to be 200% higher than exploration data&apos;s. He supports this by variogram plots from each. My guess is that the apparent, large difference between these variograms results from a failure to account for the proportional effect (blasthole assays are likely from a higher-grade area). A simple check would be a comparison of the variance of exploration samples nearest blastholes. As for a nearly conditionally-unbiased estimator of a large random error, the arithmetic mean of all of the data certainly qualifies, provided there is an even data spacing. As a corollary, so does simple kriging, which would include, in this case, a large weighting to the arithmetic mean. Similarly, using a large number of samples with ordinary kriging or indicator kriging would significantly reduce the bias in the case of a large nugget effect for the variogram.[ ] Reply by H. Peter Knudsen Raymond questions two conclusions in the paper. First, he wonders whether a 21 % overestimation represents a realistic mining situation. I agree that 21 % is high, but overestimation in the range of 10% to 15% is certainly common in my experience. Furthermore, several years ago I consulted on a gold mine that was experiencing a 45% overestimation due, predominantly, to poor blasthole samples: In further questioning of the 21 % value, Raymond wonders whether the nugget effect of the blastholes is really so much larger than the nugget values of the exploration data. It is consistently larger throughout the deposit. In my experience with six Nevada gold mines, the high nugget value is not unusual. In fact, for some reason, nugget values for blasthole samples are typically about 0.0005 (opt squared). I am of the opinion that this high nugget effect observed at many gold mines is predominantly due to the inherent inadequacies of the blasthole sample and subsequent sample preparation. The second conclusion Raymond questions is the inability of the estimators tested to reduce the conditional bias. In fact, the conditional bias is extreme with the polygon estimator and greatly reduced by ordinary kriging. However, it was not eliminated. Raymond suggests using simple kriging, or perhaps a larger number of samples, to reduce the conditional bias. The technique of simple kriging may be less affected by the random errors in the data, but I did not test the technique. Using a larger amount of data presupposes that too few samples were used initially. In ordinary kriging and indicator kriging, the screen effect comes into play and ensures that samples beyond the second screen are given zero weight. Hence, increasing the sample size does not change the estimates nor the conditional bias. The main point of my paper is that the random unbiased errors (a fact of life in blasthole samples) cause a conditional bias in our estimates. The mechanics by which the conditional bias is introduced are nicely explained by Springett. My paper simply shows that the bias is also present when working with linear estimators, such as ordinary kriging, and even with nonlinear estimators, such as indicator kriging.[ ]

The objective of this international conference was to assist the mining and minerals industries in their global transition to sustainable development. The main theme of the meeting, therefore, was the development, monitoring and assessment of sustainable development criteria for mineral operations. Emerging technologies that can assist in the development of criteria and performance measurements were also presented at the meeting. A goal of the conference was also to conclude with a consensus plan and a process, representing a variety of stakeholders, which can provide guidance to the global minerals community on the path to sustainable development. A number of papers were not submitted in time to be included in the printed proceedings. Hence this addendum was compiled and includes last minute paper submissions. The pages of this addendum are numbered consecutively to the main volume of proceedings, so that when a reference is made to a paper, a proper page number may be quoted.

Plane failure in rock and soil slopes is usually caused by the intersection of a discontinuity plane with a slope face. Normally, these discontinuities are weaker than the surrounding intact rock and provide a surface along which movement can occur. The discontinuities are typically analyzed to determine the stability of a particular slope. One problem that arises when evaluating the stability of a planar feature is that the method for planar analysis is two-dimensional and has difficulty dealing with planes that are oblique to the slope face. Several researchers have stated in the past that planar failures are a special case of wedge failure. Wedge failures occur when two planar discontinuities intersect in an unfavorable manner. Sliding can occur along the intersection of the planes. Wedge failures are very common in rock slopes and can often be problematic. Wedge stability analysis methods are typically three-dimensional and can analyze planar features that are very oblique to the slope face. Wedge failure analysis can also be used to determine the stability of planar features with good success. One advantage to using wedge analysis over plane analysis is that a tension crack can be both non-vertical and oblique to the slope face in the wedge analysis. This allows the engineer to more closely match field conditions. It also negates the need for the engineer to have two separate software packages to analyze a single slope, saving both time and money.

Techniques of testing perlite require a combination of art and science. The modifications made to the perlite Corp. vertical laboratory furnace include addition of instrumentation, flowmeters, vibrators, automatic feeders, and regulators. The basic testing sequence consists of expanded density, furnace yield, compacted density, percent sinkers, and compaction resistance. These tests are modified versions of those specified by the Perlite Institute. This sequence is designed as a preliminary evaluation of a material&apos;s suitability for horticultural-aggregate end uses rather than a detailed measure of filtration capability.

The ability to compete profitably in a competitive, demanding and specialized market, requires all components of productivity to be optimized toward the same manufacturing goal. This ever present requisite is seldom more apparent than with the quality control (PC) considerations that confront the super-refined metallurgical production necessary for today&apos;s exacting technical applications. In a work-place that already exceeds all environmental standards for cleanliness, this paper describes the development of specific environmental mechanisms and controls implemented at a titanium processing facility to impact both the minimal air-borne particulate contaminants and excessive process heat generation which are believed to degrade product purity. Based on the analysis of a carefully structured and instrumented field survey, two alternative solutions were proposed to modify the present facility utilizing a forced air (blowing) system. The first scenario requires ambient air to be drawn from a louvered rooftop installation and ducted to specific zones within the plant with appropriate weighted louvers and wall and roof exhausters designed into the system for air control. The second scenario incorporates a properly sized baghouse to be used in conjunction with the first system.

This paper describes a graphics station and graphics software designed specifically for use within the minerals industry. Through the graphics station, a user is able to recall maps for modification, display them on a color CRT, send the work to a plotter, and restore the work when finished. The engineer may use the system for the storing of data, per- forming engineering calculations, doing word processing, and performing general file maintenance. In addition, the system may be used to communicate with a mainframe computer for such purposes as: transmission of large data files, graphic 3-dimensional rotation of a mineral deposit or mine design, contouring of spacial data, and other data processing work.

Invented by Pierre Boutin in the early 1960s the column was a complete break from the conventional flotation cell. 1. When used as a rougher-scavenger, the column is excellent. 2. When used as a cleaner, the results can be spectacular. The very first column tests were carried out using it as a rougher-scavenger in a reverse float where silica was floated from iron. It produced a concentrate underflow as good or better than that produced from roughing and scavenging stages in cells, The froth tailing overflow was better than that produced by several stages of cell cleaning. Column scaleup progressed rapidly from the two inch diameter unit to a semi automated 12 inch diameter column on material from the Iron Ore Company of Canada. A change in operating philosophy within IOCC brought all flotation development, column or conventional, to a halt. At that time, IOCC had an exclusive right to the use of the column in Canada in the field of iron ore. We moved into the field of sulphides. A Canadian copper producer sent ore for testing and the results led to their purchase of the first commercial size of column - a 36 inch diameter machine. It was a mechanical disaster. It took several years to raise sufficient funds to return to that mill with our basic 18 inch square unit. It was to be tested and modified in order to learn how to properly design a large column. Originally used as a rougher- scavenger, it had to produce tails equal to the final tailings from this well run plant. It did, and did so while producing a rougher-scavenger concentrate almost equal to the plant final concentrate. It was finally used as a cleaner and produced concentrate 5% higher in copper than the plant final concentrate with equal cleaner tails. This phase of the column development was carried out under very difficult circumstances. The mill superintendent had realized that if he took the froth removal system from our original mechanical disaster and applied it to a conditioner while injecting air, he would have a flotation cell. He had personally applied for patents on this Maxwell Cell. Our development work was done in his mill and as our results became better and better, our difficulties became worse and worse. We finally had to terminate this work. The 18 inch column installed at Mines Gaspé 14 years later was identical to the one removed from Opemiska. The 18 inch column was tried on various ores over the following years and always produced excellent results. However, it was not really a production size unit. We had always aimed for the 72 inch column (72" x 72" x 44&apos; 9"). Prior to this huge machine, we needed the intermediate 36 inch column. The failure of the original 36 inch diameter unit at Opemiska had raised the possibility of short circuiting inside the column as the cross section increased. The first 36 inch square unit was tested in parallel with the proven 18 inch column. If the underflow of the 36 incher was not as good as that of the 18 incher, short circuiting was a possibility in the larger unit. It had been designed for insertion of drop in partitions, four feed points had been provided and the 36 inch column would have become a modular unit of four 18 inch columns. Testing showed the underflows of both columns to be identical. There was no short circuiting in the 36 inch column. Once we had the 36 incher, we had no fear of the 72 inch column. It is permanently partitioned into four 36 inch columns but uses only one set of instrumentation. All the component parts of the 72 inch column come from the 36 inch unit. In spite of our results, the mining community did not believe the column could work. Finally, in 1980, Mines Gasp6 ordered an 18 and 36 inch column for their byproduct molybdenum

As a step in the endeavor to reduce future tunneling costs in New York City, the Environmental Protection Administration, Dept. of Water Resources, instituted a program in 1972 to monitor the performance of the lining of one of its tunnels. A monitoring program was included as part of the contract specifications for the East Branch Interceptor Sewer tunnel for the Port Richmond Water Pollution Control Project in the hope that measured data would indicate possible future cost effective design or construction improvements. The monitoring program involved measuring ground deformations, circumferential liner stresses, longitudinal liner stresses, and jacking pressures. This paper presents some of the findings from these measurements, with emphasis on liner stresses. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The 3.05m (10 ft) diameter steel lined tunnel was constructed under two separate contracts. The easterly portion, Contract 3A, was approximately 3109m (10,200 ft) in length and constructed by Peter Kiewit Sons Co.1 The westerly portion, Contract 3B, was approximately 2160m (7100 ft) in length, and constructed by Richmond Constructors, a joint venture of Grow Tunneling Corp., MacLean Grove & Company, Inc., Grove, Shepherd. Wilson & Kruge, Inc., Morrison-Knudsen Company, Inc., and Andrew Catapano Co., Inc. Each contract included three test stations, hence a total of six along the tunnel route. Excavated material along the tunnel route consisted primarily of dense fine to coarse sand with varying percentages of gravel and silt with occasional boulders. Pockets of organic silt were encountered on Contract 3B and a large portion of Contract 3A ran through slightly weathered serpentine and schist. Overlying material and the groundwater level varied considerably along the route as did the height of overburden. Figures 1 and 2 show the generalized soil profiles for Contracts 3A (PK stations) and 3B (RC stations) respectively.

The Mining design system is a CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) software and was developed as designer-oriented, interactive mode software to perform geological and mining design calculation and graphics. To perform geology and mining design, the deposit model files created by the software "Deposit Modelling System", are transferred to the environment of graphics support software, then a specially developed drafting submodule can be selected to proceed to interactive graphics design. If it is necessary to calculate the grade and quantity of a particular part of the ore-body, another submodule will be called and run. The resulting file is &apos;transferred back, and the recalculation program takes the data from the file and refers to the deposit model file to create a summary reserve report: The minimum hardware configuration of the system are IBM-AT Basic work station with high resolution graphic monitor and peripherals needed are digitizer, plotter, printer.

Industrial-scale test results indicate superior metallurgical performance of column flotation compared to conventional cell flotation for copper cleaning. A technical comparison of bubble generation systems for column flotation is made. Two types of bubble generation systems are considered: the filter-cloth type spargers and the Turbo-Air® sparger, which utilizes an air-water mixture fed to the column through injection tubes. Examples of the improved technical performance available with an external sparger system are presented using data from plant tests conducted for specific applications with several different mineral ores. INTRODUCTION Column flotation is now a valuable unit operation which mineral processing engineers employ in the design and operation of flotation circuits in nearly all mineral applications. The acceptance of columns in the mid- 1980s by the minerals industry was paralleled by a rigorous approach to developing a scientific understanding of the design, scale- up, and operation of column flotation units (Finch and Dobby, 1990). Since then, column flotation has become a standard unit of the cleaning stage in many new mineral concentrator projects and has replaced older mechanical cells to improve process efficiency. The size of column cells has continued to grow from the initial 0.9- to 2.1 -meter diameter range, and it is not uncommon to find column cells today being 2.7- to 3.6-meters in diameter. With the success of the smaller units, the scale-up to larger cells has been proven and demonstrated by the performance of the large-diameter cells (Murdock and Wyslouzil. 1991). The use of columns in flotation circuits has also been accompanied by developments in modelling. control, and optimization of column performance (Lee et al, 1991). The bubble generation system is the heart of the operation of column flotation cells. The most common methods for generating bubbles can be divided into two types: the internal and external spargers. Internal spargers are typically a porous material, such as sintered glass, porous rubber or filter-cloth, or maybe a single- or multi-nozzle sparger. External spargers implies that a gas and a liquid (either water or slurry) are brought into contact outside the column and that mixture is then introduced into the column.
