The role of ZnS04 in activation of sphalerite (ZnS) and deactivation of lead-activated sphalerite has been investigated. Adsorption of metallic ions at the solid-solution interface, electro kinetic results for sphalerite under different chemical conditions, and thermodynamic calculations were used to elucidate the mechanisms involved. It is shown that flotation response of sphalerite in absence of activators is rather weak and that adsorption of ethyl xanthate on the mineral mainly electrostatic in nature. Zinc sulfate is found to activate the mineral but only in a narrow acidic pH range. This is attributed to the increase of zeta potential as well as the possible increase in amount of negatively charged bulk precipitated zinc xanthate. Lead ions activate sphalerite in a wide pH range and the lead activated mineral assumes a flotation behavior similar to that of galena (PbS). However, addition of ZnS04 depresses the lead-activated sphalerite by replacing lead ions at the mineral/solution interface.

In April of 1990, Homestake Mining Company began a 5,100 m (16,700 ft.) exploration drift from the Homestake Mine in Lead, South Dakota. The drift starts from the mine's 6800 level, nearly 2,100 m below the surface, and extends north to further explore occurrences of gold discovered by surface drilling. Access to the North Drift for men and materials and for disposal of waste rock is limited to the Homestake Mine's #6 Winze, which serves as the major production shaft for the deep levels of the mine. This paper will discuss the successes and challenges encountered while managing a tunneling project 2,100 m below the surface and from an active mine.

From the waste material of the production of aluminium foil aluminium pigment is produced for the paint industry by grinding it in white spirit. During grinding 1-2 % iron impurity gets into the product, weakening its quality, from the wear of the mill armour and the grinding bodies and from the contamination of the raw material. For deironing the product, a stage-operated electrically induced magnetic filter separator was developed and put into operation. The separator was sited in an explosive environment and therefore required a special design and safety system. The paper describes the results of the development work. the device that was developed, the safety system as well as the results of and experiences with the operation of the separator.

This research contributes to BioMinE (http://biomine.brgm.fr), an integrated European Union project of the Sixth Framework Programme. The general objective of BioMinE is the development and integration of innovative, environmentally friendly, biohydrometallurgical processes for the recovery of metals from primary and secondary resources within Europe. The work presented in this paper deals with the initial plan of study on the sustainable use of solid wastes derived from bio-processing of European metal bearing resources. The approach involves solidifying the waste into cementitious waste composites analogous to controlled low-strength materials (CLSM). The aim is to achieve composites of adequate mechanical, physicochemical and environmental integrity, thus providing a sustainable solution for dealing with such bulk products which are conventionally unmarketable and therefore normally discarded to landfill. Assessment has been based on largely ?model? wastes anticipated to be similar to bio-processing wastes. These include an ochreous mine water sludge and an industrial goethite residue. The work indicates that wastes containing high iron and calcium contents, typical of products from bioleaching of concentrates, could be beneficially reformed as CLSM of appropriate compressive strength. Due to the high water contents of these composites, porosity and hydraulic conductivity were correspondingly high. Flow-through leach tests showed some resistance to immobilisation of toxic elements. Work is continuing to reduce the risk of toxic elements leaching under environmental conditions. This will include laboratory-scale encapsulated systems of CLSM, designed and tested to produce a novel type of engineered fill structure.

The prospects for near-term growth in coal demand are exceptional: the federal government recently targeted 141 oil- and gas-fired generating units for mandatory conversion to coal; coal-to-synfuel developments are proceeding at a steady clip, with construction of a $1.2 billion gasification plant to begin this year in Beulah, ND; uncertainty over nuclear power and stratospheric oil prices enhance the steam coal market; the export market is ripening; and an influential new political force (the Senate Coal Caucus and Congressional Coal Group) is flexing its muscles on Capitol Hill. But the rosy picture is muddled by signals, often conflicting, sent out by federal agencies. Although EPA can be credited with relaxing its grip on the Clean Air Act, its sulfur dioxide control strategy is still often at odds with the Administration's call for domestic energy (coal) development. B. R. Brown, president of Consolidation Coal Co., sums up the situation: "Every mule is pulling in a different direction." Often in the midst of the fray is the small operator who has been hardest hit by the stagnation of coal markets. Layoffs, shortened work weeks, and mine closures were rampant in the eastern and midwestern coal fields, even among large producers. The longstanding boom in western coal was tempered during 1979 by a noticeable slowdown in announcements of new mine construction. The prognosis: Eastern coal will remain in the doldrums for quite a while to come as it works off some 90 Mt of overcapacity. Midwestern coal will fare no better due to the regulatory-influenced appetite of midwestern utilities for low-sulfur western coal. This displacement should ease, though, as new power plants equipped to burn high-sulfur coal come on line in the years ahead. In the West, the National Coal Association projects production to increase a healthy- 10% this year, although mine-to-market transportation looms as the single largest stumbling block to marketing efforts. Fatalities Up 40% in 1979 The National Coal Association estimated total coal production in 1979 at 671 Mt, an increase of 13% over 1978. Of this total, the East and Mid-west accounted for 476 Mt (71%) and the West produced 195 Mt (29%). With the consistent rise in western production playing against flat outputs in the East and Midwest, underground mining's share of total production continues to slip and is expected to account for only 38-39% in 1980. Incidence of deaths and injuries at US coal mines soared in 1979 over 1978 rates. MSHA figures (still subject to final adjustments) reveal a death rate of 0.07 per 200 000 man-hours, up 40% over 1978's 0.05 figure. MSHA chief Bob Lagather attributed the death incidence to the large number of new coal mines put on line in 1978, which he estimated at between 350 and 400. Nonfatal injuries rose to 8.48 per 200 000 man-hours, up about 15% from a 1978 rate of 7.35. In absolute numbers, MSHA counted 144 fatalities and 18 111 lost-day injuries during the 1979 calendar year. The 144 coal mining deaths in 1979 is the highest number of coal fatalities at US mines since 1975.

Unlike previous gold mining booms in Nevada's Great Basin, the current boom includes a serious commitment to mine reclamation. Many of the smaller mines began reclaiming in the late 1980s but met with limited success due in part to poor soil characteristics. Public land managers and the mining industry began looking for ways to improve reclamation success. One promising technique is suggested by an ongoing research project using sludge biosolids, the solid residue of municipal waste water treatment. During the 1980s, limited space in landfills led municipal governments to search for alternate ways to dispose of their biosolids. The cities of Reno and Sparks, NR and the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) searched for ways to combine these needs to everyone's mutual benefit. Yet barriers remained. The federal government had major concerns about potential bioaccumulation of metals and contamination of drinking water from the land application of municipal biosolids. The barriers were lifted late in 1991 when an interagency task force led by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a new federal policy on the use of biosolids on federal land. The policy encouraged biosolids as a soil amendment to reclaim degraded minelands and invited federal agencies to develop biosolid pilot projects. In response, BLM enlisted the help of American Resources Corp. (ARC) and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for a pilot study at ARC'S' Butcher Boy Mine near Wadsworth, NR. Although biosolids have been used in mine land reclamation in the eastern United States for 20 years, before this pilot study, none had been used on public lands in the arid Great Basin. Land application of biosolids improves soil conditions by improving nutrient uptake, increasing water retention, permitting easier root penetration and enhancing soil fertility. Biosolids increase ecosystem productivity and can lead to significant improvements in the structure and diversity of plant and animal communities. Thus, land application of biosolids promotes biodiversity.

The high-pressure grinding roll was introduced about 10 years ago and has established itself in many applications. Most of these machines are used in grinding circuits in the cement industry. A few operate in conventional mineral-processing plants. Polysius has sold more than 350 Polycoms worldwide. An exception is diamond-ore processing in South Africa and Australia. This type of grinding system increases diamond liberation and reduces the capital costs for the downstream processing plant. There are several reasons why high-pressure grinding rolls have not been used more extensively in the mining industry: - The mining industry adheres to conventional grinding technology and regional preference for certain comminution circuits. - Design, scale-up and flowsheet assessment procedures are viewed as being immature and reduce confidence in the potential application of the technology. - Downstream process benefits are unproven on a plant scale.

The paper will describe the $1.7 billion Milwaukee Program. Past contracting practices of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District are discussed. To minimize costs and claims, the MMSD has implemented some recommendations from Better Contracting for Underground Construction. Currently implemented are: full disclosure of subsurface data including interpretations, the deletion of disclaimers relating to subsurface information, use of the federal Differing Site Condition clause, payment for mobilization. Also considered was the recommendation concerning Wrap Up Insurance. The MMSD shares and allocates certain designated risks through the Contract. A claims handling methodology has been developed and used on this major construction program.

Georgius Agricola in 1556 wrote De Re Metallica, one of the first and probably the most famous of mining reference works. In Book 1 he reflects rather elegantly on mining and miners. "Many persons hold the opinion that the metal industries are fortuitous and that the occupation is one of sordid toil, and altogether a kind of business requiring not so much skill as labour. But as for myself, when I reflect carefully upon its special points one by one, it appears to be far otherwise. For a miner must have the greatest skill in his work, that he may know first of all what mountain or hill, what valley or plain, can be prospected most profitably, or what he should leave alone; moreover, he must understand the veins, stringers, and seams in the rocks. Then he must be thoroughly familiar with the many and varied species of earths, juices, gems, stones, marbles, rocks, metals, and compounds. He must also have a complete knowledge of the method of making all underground works. Lastly, there are the various systems of assaying substances and of preparing them for smelting; and here again there are many altogether diverse methods. ... "Furthermore, there are many arts and sciences of which a miner should not be ignorant. First there is Philosophy, that he may discern the origin, cause, and nature of subterranean things; for then he will be able to dig out the veins easily and advantageously, and to obtain more abundant results from his mining. Secondly, there is Medicine, that he may be able to look after his diggers and other workmen, that they do not meet with those diseases to which they are more liable than work- men in other occupations, or if they do meet with them, that he himself may be able to heal them or may see that the doctors do so. Thirdly follows Astronomy, that he may know the divisions of the heavens and from them judge the direction of the veins. Fourthly, there is the science of Surveying that he may be able to estimate how deep a shaft should be sunk to reach the tunnel which is being driven to it, and to determine the limits and boundaries in these workings, especially in depth. Fifthly, his knowledge of Arithmetical Science should be such that he may calculate the cost to be incurred in the machinery and the working of the mine. Introduction The gold rush to the Canadian Klondike and then to the Alaskan gold camps is legend to Americans. The early years of the century also saw flourishing hard rock mining at the famous Treadwell and Alaska Juneau gold mines and the bonanza Kennecott copper mine. Over the last two decades, rich discoveries of copper, cobalt, zinc, lead, molybdenum, tin, and silver have furthered Alaska's reputation as a storehouse of US minerals. Alaska may also contain large commercial deposits of chromite, platinum, and nickel. Yet in 1984, with the exception of the Usibelli coal mine and several hundred small placer gold mines, Alaska's mineral potential remains largely undeveloped. Uncertain 70s The 1970s were years of uncertainty for the mining industry in Alaska. The discovery in 1968 of a huge reservoir of oil and natural gas in Prudhoe Bay brought the land claims of Alaska's natives to national attention and focused interest in Alaska's resource wealth. The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 (ANSCA) created the regional native corporations and granted them selection rights to some 178 000 km2 (44 million acres) of Alaska's 1.5 Gin' (375 million acres) - about 12% of the state's land area. The native land selection process would take years. During this time, the status of much of Alaska's land was in question. Additionally, section d(2) of ANSCA provided for the conversion of an undetermined amount of federal lands into conservation units. These consist of parks, scenic rivers, national monuments, and wildlife refuges. The debate over the d(2) lands was long and acrimonious. National conservation groups lobbied to include as much acreage as possible within restrictive classifications, regardless of its mineral or energy potential. The process was polarized into a preservation-versus-development struggle. To many Alaskans, what was at stake was the ability to develop a viable independent economy, rather than an ongoing role as economic wards of the federal government. Luminex is a new method of prospecting for mineral deposits based on time-resolved mineral luminescence created by an ultra-violet light source. Developed by Scintrex Ltd., Luminex detects and resolves a group of key minerals - either ore minerals themselves or, more often, accessory or pathfinder minerals for certain types of economic ore deposits. These minerals are commonly found on the earth's surface, even in areas of considerable weathering. The method extends the range of mineral deposits that are remotely detectable from the air. Tungsten, tin, molybdenum, gold, and bedded lead-zinc deposits are included. Therefore, Luminex is a natural supplement to the three classical methods of airborne geophysics. The luminescence of minerals has been known and used qualitatively in mineral exploration for many years. But there are more than 500 minerals known to be at least sometimes luminescent. Luminescence of most is unpredictable and the colors they emit may vary from locale to locale. It is, perhaps, this apparent complexity of the field that has discouraged its proper scientific scale until now. There are two basic types of luminescent minerals - intrinsic and impurity activated. In the first type, luminescence is an inherent property of the mineral in its purest form. In the latter, luminescence is due to the introduction of foreign trace elements, often in very modest amounts (ppm), into the crystal lattice. These trace elements are known as activators. There are very few intrinsic luminescent minerals commonly found in nature. Chief among these are the calcium tungstatemolybdate family, more commonly known as the scheelite-powellite family, and the uranyl minerals such as autunite and saleeite. The vast majority of other known fluorescent minerals such as fluorite, hydrozincite, and many calcites, are impurity activated - that is, they will not fluoresce in purest form. In addition to the many minerals likely to luminesce at the earth's surface under ultraviolet excitation, any prospector who has ventured out at night with a mercury lamp will know that much organic matter luminesces - for example lichens and even scorpions. Just as the eye finds difficulty in resolving the luminescence of minerals from that of organic materials, it also has its limitations at sorting out minerals from one another by their luminescent colors. Figure 1 shows, in part, the photoluminescent emission spectra of scheelite, hydrozincite, and autunite. It is clear that there is a considerable similarity in spectrum between scheelite and hydrozincite and a great deal of overlap. In fact, a small amount of molybdenum in the scheelite lattice can almost bring these two spectra into coincidence. On the other hand, the autunite emission spectrum is clearly resolved from the other two. Basis of the Method The right-hand side of Fig. 1 shows the time waveforms of decay of the photoluminescence of the same three minerals. It is apparent that the lifetimes of photoluminescence of scheelite and hydrozincite are radically different and that these two minerals, therefore, may be readily resolved through their emission lifetime characteristics. It is in the realm of time-resolved measurements (lifetime characteristics) that Scintrex has made its major advance in the Luminex method. With the exception of some work by Exxon confined to uranyl minerals, to the best of our knowledge, no systematic scientific investigation has been carried out in the field of time-resolved mineral luminescence studies other than the work of Scintrex. Scintrex's findings are that all organic materials and most commonly activated luminescent minerals have lifetimes shorter than one microsecond. In addition, only a relatively small number of minerals - among them those called key minerals, or certain ore and pathfinder minerals - have lifetimes greater than one micro-second. Scintrex is able to characterize these minerals primarily by their emission lifetimes and secondarily by their emission spectral characteristics. By a combination of these factors a mineral index is arrived at. From that, photoluminescent minerals can be resolved from one another with a high degree of probability. At least two spectral channels and two time channels - of which one can be common - are required to apply this mineral index. Ground System A portable hand-held Luminex analyzer based on a modulated mercury lamp has been used to date in Canada, the US, and Australia. The current production model of this device is the LG-2. It has two spectral channels and two time channels for each spectral channel. Figure 2 shows a ground Luminex traverse over the Texas-Arizona zinc prospect in Arizona. The instrument was set so the channel read was hydrozincite-specific insofar as possible. The mineralization in this prospect is known to be hydrozincite and other zinc secondary minerals in limestone. Figure 3 shows a ground Luminex traverse over the AAA uranium prospect in Nevada. The instrument was set to optimize the uranyl response. For comparative purposes, broadband scintillation counter readings were made on the same stations (also shown in Fig. 3). It is apparent that both the Luminex and the scintillation counter results reflect a near-surface distribution of uranyl minerals. It is interesting that no visible uranyl secondary minerals

The last twenty years of development in Process Mineralogy are reviewed. Since the milestone review by Henley in 1983, which projected the concept and suggested closer working relations between mineral processing and mineral science, the second generation (1983-2003) has made significant progress. Examples are to be found in improved sampling and high-confidence flotation testing, and in automated quantitative mineral measurement. The recent addition of end-member studies has provided a clearer view of the overall ore mixture milled from its constituent geological components. In all, better predictive abilities have resulted from these improvements to Process Mineralogy. These improvements have led to more significant business impacts in mineral resource characterization, and in optimization of existing concentrator operations.

The increasing social interest for the environmental issues, forces the authorities to enact more rigorous regulations. The mining industry is one of the sectors that concentrate vigorous remonstrance. It is an absolutely justified reaction, as a result of the numerous contaminated and polluted sites that have been inherited by previous operations and they remain unremedied. The lack of a consolidated global legislation, transfers the burden of decisions to the national level. This paper consists of two parts. At the first part, it discusses the critical role of the state to form an effective environmental policy, feasible for the context of the national economy. Afterwards it analyses two of the main points, which must be considered by the regulator for the excavation activity, the abandoned sites and the duration of the mining investment. The aims are to defuse, in the short-term, the public pressure, protecting the economic growth and, at the same time, to form a basic structure for the development of the corporate social responsibility. The second part presents an alternative financial instrument for the Greek regulatory framework, conformed to the characteristics of the Greek Economy, and analyses the expected benefits both for the business and the social welfare.

In order to reduce the resistance of hard rocks to excavation by the available cutters, and in order to reduce the wear of the cutters and thus to increase the efficiency of the conventional tunneling machines and to improve their rate of advance in hard rocks, surface active agents have been studied in the controlled laboratory environments and have been experimented with in the field of actual tunneling operations. The laboratory study utilized a notched beam test to measure the effectiveness of 30 different surface active agents on the amount of surface energy required to cause stable fracture in the rock specimens. In addition to the type of rocks, geometry of the specimens, type of surface active agents, the effects of environmental factors such as temperature and degree of saturations were studied. The principle mechanism responsible for weakening of rocks in the presence of surface active agents was believed to be that of stress activated corrosion. The application of surfactants in the laboratory resulted in a reduction of up to 50% in rock strength, while limited experiments in the field have shown a 10 to 20% increase in the rate of advance. Substantial efforts both in the laboratory and in the field are needed to fully understand the mechanism involved and to utilize the effectiveness of surfactants as weakening agents for hard rocks.

Approximately six billion gallons of combined sewage are discharged annually into Willamette River and Columbia Slough through Portland’s combined sewer system. The Columbia Slough Consolidation Conduit (CSCC) is an important element of mandated Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) abatement. It includes2,548m (8,361 ft.) of 3.7 m. (12 ft.) internal diameter tunnel. The CSCC alignment traverses the UP railroad, Columbia Boulevard and parallels an old sewer. Geologic conditions include river alluvium and fine to coarse-grained flood deposits containing cobbles and boulders. This paper describes design and construction of a tunnel in soft-ground, with shallow cover and close to an old concrete sewer.

Modern coal processing plants utilize multiple cleaning circuits to efficiently beneficiate different size coal fractions of run-of-mine coal. An older plant optimization approach is to maintain average product quality from individual cleaning circuits at the same level as the given product specifications for the overall plant. However, many past studies indicate that the equalization of product quality approach fails to produce the maximum plant-yield. A newer approach, known as equalization of incremental product quality, requires that the incremental product quality obtained from each circuit be maintained at the same level to satisfy the overall plant product quality. This approach ensures the maximization of plant yield while satisfying a single product quality constraint. However, while dealing with multiple product quality constraints, this approach by itself may not be sufficient to obtain the desired maximum yield. For the simple reason that the dirtiest particle (or group of particles) with respect to one quality constraint may not be the same particle (or group of particles) with respect to another quality constraint, the mass yield versus product quality relationship generated by equalizing different incremental product quality may not be exactly the same. Therefore, an additional search technique has to be utilized to determine the global-maximum value of plant yield. Thus, the main objective of this study was to utilize an emerging optimization technique, known as genetic algorithms (GA) to maximize plant yield while satisfying multiple product quality constraints. The maximum plant yield obtained from this approach was nearly same as the maximum yield obtained by the incremental product quality approach while satisfying one specific product quality constraint. The GA was applied on a coal preparation plant that utilizes four circuit operations - heavy medium bath, heavy medium cyclone, spiral and froth flotation. The results showed that using GA as an optimization process gives 2.56% higher yield that will result in additional revenue generation of $5,120,000 per annum than average product quality approach.

A ground penetrating synthetic pulse radar system has been used by the Bureau of Mines to probe into a coal pillar to locate hidden structures or anomalies. Two types of velocity tomographic reconstruction methods, direct matrix inversion and iterative, were used to obtain a velocity image of the interior of the pillar. The reconstructed image showed the existence and location of a relatively low velocity material within the pillar. Core samples were taken from the pillar in a region surrounding the low velocity material. Analysis of the cores showed the presence of a clay vein coinciding with the low velocity material imaged in the tomogram.

The Alligator Ridge Mine was discovered in 1976 by a prospector grubstaked by Amselco Exploration Inc. in eastern Nevada 116 km (72 mi.) northwest of Ely in White Pine County. The mine is operated as a 50-50 Joint Venture by BP Gold, the operator, which is a subsidiary of British Petroleum Minerals America and Nerco Inc., a subsidiary of Pacific Power and Light.

I. INTRODUCTION The Atlanta Research Chamber is an UMTA-sponsored applied research facility studying tunnel design, excavation and support systems. It is located directly below Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. It is included in the CN-120 contract to build the Peachtree Center subway station, a part of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) multi-billion dollar "Phase A" 53-mile transit project, which is 80 percent funded by UMTA with 20 percent provided by local authorities in Atlanta and Fulton and DeKalb counties (Figure 1). The Research Chamber is located immediately south of the main Peachtree Center Station cavern, and is in part an enlargement of the pre-existing Pilot Tunnel excavated to provide bidders on the CN-120 contract a view of the rock conditions (Figure 2). The Research Chamber lies some 3 meters above, and is approximately parallel to, the twin Running Tunnels. The Research Chamber is 18 meters long and has the same 5.5 meter diameter horseshoe shape design dimensions as the twin Running Tunnels.

Introduction It is generally accepted as dogma that sampling contributes most of the error in gold fire assays. Differences in assay results on pulps from the same sample interval are frequently regarded as evidence of the presence of the so called "nugget effect" of relatively coarse gold particles. It is true that coarse gold particles can contribute to substantial sampling fluctuations. But, while the process of sampling is probably the major source of error, the analytical process cannot be completely ignored as a possible contributor to erratic assay results. To maintain a stable assay process, the analytic part of the system must also be kept in control. One method of monitoring the performance of the analytic system is to systematically assay standard materials, whose sampling characteristics are carefully controlled. Gold assay standards are not prepared, nor can they be prepared, to account for both sampling and analytical errors. It is not possible to send coarse material to a lab for both preparation (i.e., comminution and splitting) and fire assaying and then come to conclusions only about the fire-assay process. Because most gold ores are very heterogeneous, sampling errors would, in most cases, completely mask the contribution of the analytical errors. Assay-standard material is prepared only to assess the accuracy and variability in the fire assay process. Because the objective of the assay standard is to provide information about the fire assaying, it is necessary to control the sampling error of the standard material, so that it is only a minor constituent of the discrepancies observed in any assay results. To do this requires that the particle size of the standard material be reduced to a point where the relative standard deviation of the sampling error (i.e... the standard deviation of the errors divided by the average gold content of the material) is 2% or less. For all but very homogeneous mineralization, this means that the material must be reduced to 100% -150 mesh before the sampling errors are adequately controlled. However, even reducing the particle size can contribute to sampling problems. The liberation of gold may cause segregation that can cause large sampling fluctuations that are not easily controlled while maintaining the desired grade. Because, in most cases, the standard material would already be in the "pulp" state when it is submitted to a lab for assay, it is not possible to entirely conceal the nature of the sample from the lab. This is a problem inherent in using assay standard material. Because of the contribution of sampling to error generation in the assay process, the use of "coarse" material does not solve the problem of submitting a totally "blind" standard to the lab. In the sections that follow, the selection, preparation, testing and use of gold fire assay standard material is discussed. While some may dismiss the production of standard material as folly, it is possible to produce and utilize standard material to stabilize and improve the fire-assay process to produce more reliable assay results. Material selection It is desirable to use material that has as nearly the same metallurgical characteristics as the samples with which the standards will be included. However, this is usually difficult. For many reasons, including the particle size at which a significant amount of the gold mineral is liberated, the sampling characteristics of even -150-mesh material may preclude the use of geologically and metallurgically similar ore as a standard. It is usually easier to get material having desirable grade characteristics with the necessary sampling properties than it is to find geologically and metallurgically similar material with the required sampling characteristics. High-grade standards are especially difficult to find and prepare. This is because, as grade increases, the size of the gold particles usually increases. Larger gold particles are liberated and tend to segregate during comminution, and the homogeneity of the material cannot be maintained. For grades much above 3 g/t (0.088 oz/ton), it is very difficult to find material that has the proper sampling properties. Old mill tailings are likely candidates for assay standards. Some of these have sufficiently homogeneous mineral contents, so that the sampling errors can be effectively controlled. Where mill tailings are either not available or are not acceptable, mineralization that has exhibited homogeneous results in reassays of the pulp material is also a good candidate for the standard. Finally, the mineralized rock being sampled may (and should) be used if adequate homogeneity in the -150mesh material exists. "Adequate" ("acceptable") homogeneity is defined below.)
