The main objective of this work was to quantitatively investigate exhaust emission levels relative to maintenance (service) intervals during the operation of diesel-powered equipment at an underground bauxite mine in Greece. Such emissions depend on a great number of parameters, including the type of engine (technology) and its tuning, the type of work performed (as related to the engine workload), the suggested maintenance intervals, the altitude, the temperature and humidity of the atmosphere in the underground mine, the properties of the fuel and the operator's training and experience levels. The necessary ventilation quantities were calculated based on exhaust gas-concentration measurements and site-specific relationships between pollutants and adjusted air-quality indices. Diagrams comparing the necessary and recommended airflow for several equipment groups, featuring two engine types and different maintenance intervals, are presented.

During the last few years, significant advances continue to have been made in aspects of grouting technologies used for ground treatment in advance of tunnelling. In permeation grouting, fundamental researches have continued into improving the penetrability characteristics of cement-based grouts. The twin advantages of field regrinding normal grouts to reduce cement particle sizes, and incorporating special additives into stable grouts, are now being systematically exploited in major soft ground tunnelling projects in Europe. The methodologies of jet grouting continue to be developed with special attention being paid to qa/qc issues, reducing unit production costs, and improving predictive capabilities for subsequent settlements.

Deep open-pit mines invariably affect the local and regional hydrologic systems. Pit dewatering, occurring during mining operations, puts an obvious hydrologic stress on these hydrologic systems. However, post-mining hydro-logic impacts resulting from the pit refilling with ground water following the cessation of mining activity can also be significant. Prediction of the rate at which the post-mining pit will fill with ground water is a critical aspect of assessing such long-term hydrologic impacts. Numerical ground-water flow modeling prov1des a method that can be used to predict the rate at which pits will fill with ground water.

Final reclamation of mine tailings impoundments typically involves addressing the broad issues of surface stabilization and water management. Surface stabilization includes immobilizing the tailings particles and providing long-term protection of the containment facility. Water management typically includes provisions for handling both the external water (rainfall and runoff) and the internal water (pore fluids). Wet tailings disposal facilities, and sites with limited access and steep topography, present challenges to implementing effective surface stabilization and water management plans. This paper presents a generalized discussion of the approach to tailings impoundment reclamation based on project experience.

An extensive series of laboratory cutting tests using linear and rotary cutting machines were carried out with the objective of investigating the feasibility of achieving very high rates of penetration with TBMs in rocks of low to medium strength. These tests were performed with large diameter disc cuttrs at cutter path spacings and penetrations of up to 12 and 1.75 inches, respectively. A predictor model was also formulated to characterize rock cutting at large spacings and penetrations.

"As the speed of business has continued to increase over the last decade, the focus on real-time control of the performance of both stationary and mobile assets has become an increasing priority. Traditionally the maintenance team has been focused on the management of the availability of assets while the operations team has been focused on the throughput of those same assets. Typically operations and maintenance teams worked almost independently in spite of the fact that they were both working with the same assets. Part of the problem has been their traditional performance measures which have often been diametrically opposed. Recent advancements in the area of real-time performance measures and decision support have helped to drive higher levels of collaboration between operations and maintenance leading to real-time asset performance control and higher levels of business performance. This paper will explore the forces driving the need for changes, present an effective approach to the definition of the most appropriate business performance measures, and examine the effectiveness of contextualized real-time decision support resulting in asset performance control. TRADITIONAL APPROACHES TO ASSET PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT In most industrial operations the phrase asset performance management is synonymous with maintenance of the industrial assets. This is the way industry has viewed asset management and asset performance management for decades. This is a very limited perspective that is serving to constrain the profitability of industrial operations. As industrial organizations began to form following the Industrial Revolution, the complexity of the operations forced an organizational design based on specialization. No single person could understand all of the aspects of an industrialized operation. This was particularly true at the plant floor level where the operation and maintenance of the industrial equipment required very different skillsets and training. To accommodate the vast differences most industrial organizations set up operations teams to run the equipment and maintenance teams to keep the equipment available to the operation. Both teams were dealing with the same industrial equipment but from very different perspectives and with very different performance measures. Typically the operations team was measured on maximizing the output of the equipment – or throughput. On the other hand the maintenance team was measured on the uptime – or availability of the equipment."

"In this paper, various donors have contributed their stories of metallurgical bloopers, blunders, and scams. The paper covers areas from human error stories, through technical blunders, to outright scams. Included are some stories that involve geology as it relates to metallurgy, warehouses of precious metal concentrates, reagent selection, solutions that treat the symptoms instead of the problems, improper technological transfers, humorous design mistakes in the interest of being exacting, and many more. The stories are all true with the names and dates withheld and the cases presented in the true sense of the "John Doe Stories."

Planned tunnel projects with advanced geotechnical investigations are more frequently being suspended because of changes in funding, politics, or local priorities. Some of these projects are ultimately canceled, some decelerate and stall, some resume after a short pause, and some restart after being mothballed for several years. The restarted project often differs at least slightly from the predecessor project in terms of alignment and design concept. This paper describes approaches to evaluating the quality and completeness of previous geotechnical investigations for a re-activated project, considering technological advances as well as changes in regulatory requirements, contracting approach, and site conditions which may have taken place in the time since the project was suspended.

In common high intensity magnetic separators, the magnetic particles are deposited on ferromagnetic matrices, such as expanded metals, steel balls or grooved plates, inserted into a strong magnetic field. The nonmagnetic material is flushed through the matrix chamber. Discharging the magnetic particles is only possible if the magnetic field is reduced to zero (e.g. high gradient magnetic filtration for the purifying of kaolin) or the matrix chamber is moved out of the field by a rotor (e.g. the Jones Separator). Therefore, these separators perform only in a batch or semicontinuous mode. A real continuous operation requirs transport of the deposited magnetic material to an outlet where it can leave the separation chamber inside the field. One possibility for accomplishing such separation and transport is through the use of a rotating induction body with a certain shape, such as a spiral.

This paper is a case history of a subsurface exploration program conducted for a system of sewer tunnels in upstate New York. The focus of the discussion is a non-technical outline of how the exploration process was organized to efficiently produce a large body of geological and geotechnical data. A brief description of the project and geological setting is provided, the scope of the exploration program is summarized, the logistics of collecting, processing and reporting subsurface data is outlined, and recommendations for management of explorations applicable to any rock tunnel are provided.

This case study embodies the problems of an underground project under current contracting practices. It will provide a realistic framework for a structured examination of the anatomy of a major complex underground project. Just as it will illustrate the frustrations of the parties to an underground contract, it will also provide a means to examine potential opportunities to provide a better way to develop underground space. Urban Transit Authority (UTA) had planned to expand their heavy rail underground transit system through an extension to an existing line. UTA lacked sufficient funding to guarantee the construction and operation of this planned extension. Venture Partner Associates (VPA) in conjunction with four major department stores entered into an agreement to create a major underground space for a commercial/recreational facility. The concept was to locate the facility adjacent to a planned station and beneath existing aboveground office facilities. This group was known as Commercial Development Corporation (CDC). UTA had reached an agreement with UMTA to provide 20 percent of the line and station costs. UTA then entered into an agreement with CDC to provide the needed additional funding for the station work in return for locating the station adjacent to the planned underground commercial/recreational complex. The agreement called for CDC to contribute 20 percent to the station cost to a maximum of $25 million plus a one percent contribution from commercial/recreational revenues for operating costs.

The Concha-Almendra batch-settling treatment for concentrated suspensions of single-diameter spheres has been modified. This modified version is used in the differential equations of simple batch settling of a particle size range of different density materials. The equations have been programmed for a finite difference solution, and a number of test cases have been analyzed. By cutting the settling column at a fixed fractional height, the material below this height can be treated as underflow and the material above as overflow. The predicted partition curves obtained from treating the settling in this way have Sharpness Indices in the range of 0.5 to 0.6, in the absence of dispersion effects. The Sharpness Indices decrease as dispersion increases. When the feed size distributions are of the Rosin-Rammler form, the partition curves (corrected for the bypass fraction) fit the Rosin-Rammler equation with reasonable accuracy. The predicted Sharpness Index of a component of a mixture of two materials of different densities was unchanged from that of the same materials settled alone. However, for the same, feed size distribution and volume fraction of solids in the feed, the heavier material settled faster, and the lighter settled slower, than when settled alone.

For centuries Thailand has been a significant, though primarily unofficial, producer of gold. Panning has been the traditional way of making a living for innumerable villagers during the December to May dry season following the harvest. During this period groups can be seen working the streams, rivers, fields and dry valleys at as many as 90 localities in 28 provinces. Attesting to their efforts are the five and a half ton solid gold Buddha at Wat Trimit and much of the gold jewelry sold in Bangkok. This traditional panning will continue, and probably become more extensive, in harmony with commercial endeavors using modern technology suitable for extraction of gold from types of deposits for which gravity separation would give very low recoveries. Several such deposits have been discovered in the course of geochemical and geological surveys conducted by the Royal Thai Department of Mineral Resources with the object of contributing to early interpretation of the results of a country-wide airborne survey.

A long recognized goal in high speed tunneling and mining has been the development of a continuous drill and blast excavation capability. Both the advance rate and the economy of drill and blast tunneling can be significantly improved if the conventional cyclic process can be carried out continuously. Obviously, any continuous drill and blast tunneling machine must be an "all function" device, performing drilling, explosive loading, initiation, mucking, ventilation, roof support (if necessary), and perhaps other functions, essentially simultaneously, while remaining at the face throughout. Furthermore, such a machine must do all these things under remote control. THE SPIRAL BLAST PATTERN Several continuous drill and blast tunneling concepts have been proposed. Of these the Rapidex spiral blast pattern, taking advantage of a partially self-shielding geometry, seems to require the least shielding and hence offers the maximum access for mucking, although from the outset it was clear that remote mucking would present a major design challenge. The Rapidex continuous spiral blast concept uses an unusual blasting pattern that, under the geological conditions tested, has proven to be an effective and efficient means of fragmentation. The concept has a self-shielding characteristic which permits a lightly shielded machine to remain at the face during blasting. The pattern produces a spirally proceeding tunnel face, much like one turn of an auger. The leading portion of the spiral surface is connected to the trailing portion by an axially extending plane surface or bench. The ideal geometry is illustrated in Figure 1 for a horseshoe tunnel section.

INTRODUCTION Deformation measurements are some of the simplest and most useful measurements that can be made by the mining/rock mechanics engineer in assessing the sta¬bility of openings in rock. A number of tools and tech¬niques are presently available. This chapter will de¬scribe the most common instruments, their application, and present the equations needed for data reduction. MECHANICAL STRAIN GAGE Description of Instrument A mechanical strain gage of the Whittemore type shown in Fig. I is a useful instrument for measuring deformations of pillars, sidewalls, and roofs of under¬ground mines. Measurement gage lengths typically range from 51 to 254 mm (2 to 10 in.), and the dial indicator reads to 0.0025 mm (0.0001 in.). The instru¬ment measures the deformation between precision gage points which are anchored in the rock. The anchor points are typically grouted in small holes drilled 12.5 mm (1/2 in.) or so deep into the rock. Strain a is calculated from the measured deformation AL with the equation [ ] where L is gage length. A necessary accessory for the instrument is a master bar normally made from invar steel having a low co¬efficient of thermal expansion. This bar allows one to check the instrument for changes in the mechanical zero point and to correct for temperature effects on the measuring instrument. The instrument is available from Soiltest, Inc. for a cost of approximately $340; the cost of the master bar is approximately $55; and nonreusable brass inserts which are anchored in the rock are nominally priced at $0.27 each. All prices are for 1978. Applications Two classes of applications may be considered, one where only one measurement direction is involved and the second where three measurement directions are em¬ployed. Applications where only one measurement di¬rection is necessary include: monitoring crack or frac¬ture separation or shear movement with anchor points on opposite sides of the discontinuity; measurement of vertical strain in a pillar or sidewall; and measurement of steel support deformations with anchors in the steel members. The more general application involves a strain ro¬sette consisting of three measurement directions which for convenience are oriented 1.04 rad (60°) apart to form an equilateral triangle as shown in Fig. 2. SAG mill throughput is often a bottleneck to increasing plant productivity. Improved size distribution control in the mill feed can be used to increase mill production. This can be accomplished by controlling blast fragmentation as a function of energy input and rock characteristics. Such an approach requires the integration of rock fragmentation and comminution modeling. The optimal mill feed size distribution is determined by adapting a population balance comminution model to a measure of rock hardness or fragility, which is also related to the rock fragmentation that is achieved by blasting. The relationship between the size distribution and fragility of the feed and the mill's product and the critical size in a SAG mill is examined.

In 1986, Gold Fields began negotiations with a large Nevada electrical power utility to supply power for its Chimney Creek mine in northern Nevada. After the long negotiations reached an impasse over various costs associated with the power line, a decision was made by Gold Fields to generate its own power. Self-generation is not uncommon overseas, but it is rare for any but very large or very small operations in the United States. Surprisingly, under certain conditions a mine can generate its own power profitably, and Gold Fields has found that the associated operating and maintenance problems are minimal. The following report details what factors went into this decision and how it works. Hopefully, it can serve as a guideline for those who may find themselves in a similar position. History In the spring of 1986, Davy McKee Corp. was contracted by Gold Fields Mining Corp. to provide design engineering and construction management for the chimney Creek Mine. Chimney Creek is located about 50 mi northeast of Winnemucca, NV in a remote part of Humboldt County. The nearest industry using utility power was the Pinson Mine, about 13 mi from the proposed plant site. The existing electric line was not capable of carrying another mine the size of Chimney Creek, which required 29 million kwh per year. There were three options available to Gold Fields for the power supply: 1 )Power could be supplied by the public utility from a coal-fired plant about 30 mi away by constructing a new line to the mine,

Beat exchange in an open air-water system is considered. The system incorporates a vertical cooling tower, and a horizontal multi-stage spray chamber with unlimited number of stages. Mixing of two streams of both water and air is permitted. A spread-sheet implementation estimates temperatures of outgoing water and air for given mass flow of water and air, factor of merit for heat exchangers, barometric pressure, wet- and dry-bulb temperatures, and the temperature of incoming water.

Introduction Treatment of ores to recover metal and mineral values results in waste materials usually in the form of dilute slurries. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated a technique for dewatering phosphatic clay waste by flocculating with polyethylene oxide (PEO) and dewatering the resulting floes on a static screen and/or trommel screen (Schemer et al., 1985). In the investigation, it was determined that PEO was far superior to polyacrylamide polymers for this type of dewatering. This paper discusses reasons for this superior performance. Comparison of PEO with polyacrylamides Dewatering experiments were conducted by adding PEO solution from a burette to a stirred clay slurry. The dewatering endpoint was characterized by rotation of the floc mass as a unit, a clear supernate, a maximum floc size, and a minimum floc volume. Additional water was removed from the floes by hand squeezing (Schemer et al., 1985). The clays investigated were sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and aluminum exchanged montmorillonite and attapulgite. Nine commercially available (Superfloc) polyacrylamides were compared with PEO at two polymer concentrations. Results are summarized in Table 1. The solids content of the dewatered clays ranged between 24% and 33% and was highest for PEO-treated material. These results and the data in Table 1 indicate that PEO is superior to polyacrylamide in terms of polymer dosage required. Superflocs 16 through 128, like PEO, are nonionic and should give similar results to those for PEO if the flocculation mechanism is the same for both type polymers. Superflocs 204 through 214 are anionic with increasing anionic character from 204 to 214. Generally, the anionic polymers gave the best results for the polyacrylamides tested, but in terms of dosage they were not as good as PEO. Correlation between flocculation and dewaterability of waste slurries The overall mechanism for mechanically induced clay dewatering is not completely known, but certain observations can be made. For instance, when a polymer is adsorbed on a clay such as montmorillonite, the polymer desorbs interlayer water. Polymer adsorption is driven by favorable entropy changes associated with this water desorption. It is also known that the -CH2-CH2- links of the PEO chain are sufficiently hydrophobic to lead to physical adsorption of the polymer (Theng, 1979). For montmorillonite slurries, the sheet-like fundamental particles, called tactoids, consist of a small, variable number of aluminosilicate layers together with interlayer water and exchange ions. The flocculation process consists of adsorption of polymer on the tactoid. Loops and tails of polymer that extend into solution then adsorb on another tactoid, forming a bridge. Mechanical action, induced by hand squeezing or in a trammel, joins the bridged tactoids face-to-face and edge-to-edge to form regions of high density. Similar orientation effects are observed for the needle-like attapulgite crystals (Schemer et al., 1985). Proposed flocculation model Generally, statements concerning flocculation and dewaterability apply to both PEO and the polyacrylamides. However, PEO has additional interaction with the clay material when compared with polyacrylamides. PEO is a polymer with repeating -CH2-CH2-O- groups and interacts with montmorillonite through a water bridge whose strength is greatly influenced by the exchange ion. As more and more computer software is written for geological mapping applications, the users of the software are discovering the problems of transferring data between the programs, maintaining correct data and integrating maps produced last week with those produced today. One way to deal with these situations is by using a geographic information system (GIs). Last September the USGS and National Academy of Science held a 5-day GIs symposium on integrating technology and geoscience applications (USGS, 1988). It was followed in October by GEOTECH '88 (Peters and Krajewski 1989) which had a session exclusively for GIs applications in the Geo-Sciences. Editorials in Geobyte (Leonard, 1986, 1988) suggested that geographic information systems will be the next major computer programs to be adopted by the mineral industries. As far- back is 1985, the Computer Oriented Geological Society (COGS) printed An Introduction to GIs in their newsletter (Katz, 1985). About 20 years ago, a revolutionary idea occurred in the world of business data processing. It was the idea that all related data be stored in a standard format, in a single place and that all related computer application programs would use the same data.
