The production of coal/water fuel (CWF), a highly loaded mixture of finely ground coal, water, and chemical additives, presents a unique opportunity for significant ash and sulfur reduction through physical coal cleaning. Froth flotation can be integrated with the staged, wet, fine grinding inherent in the CWF production process. A laboratory scale research program was conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of a flexible, integrated coal cleaning/CWF process flowsheet. Performance of the conceptual flowsheet was examined for two coals of CWF commercial interest, Upper Freeport and Pittsburgh seam coals, from central and southwestern Pennsylvania, respectively. Several multi-stage coal flotation and reverse flotation circuits were evaluated. CWF was produced from the cleaned coal in each case at similar solids loadings and viscosities as observed for the raw coal. However, the ash loading and SO2 emission potential for each CWF had been significantly reduced.

Metal ions, such as chromium (Cr) and vanadium (V) are found as trace impurities in mineral dust. Since metal ion mediated free radical generation has been implicated in many disease processes, we carried out a detailed investigation of the metabolism of these metal ions by biological redox systems and the possible oxygenated radical generation therefrom. We found that highly reactive Cr(5+) species are generated in the reduction of Cr(6+) by NADPH-dependent glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase, and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase. The reduced metal ion species react with hydrogen peroxide, to generate hydroxyl (•OH) radicals in a continuous cycle. The enzymatic catalysis processes also involves the reduction of molecular oxygen to the superoxide [(0-1 2)] radical. Thus only a trace amount of metal ions chemisorbed on mineral dusts, such as quartz, can catalyze the generation of the highly toxic oxygenated radical species from cellular hydrogen peroxide, suggesting a new biochemical mechanism for mineral dust induced chronic lung injury.

This research came about because of the recognized need for a safe, easy way to line small-diameter bored raises (less than 150 cm). Currently, an operator must go down the raise and apply the concrete lining manually, using the shotcrete method of application. With an automated system, there would be no man positioned in the bore itself. All control functions could be commanded from a central location. Shotcreting in the confined space of a small-diameter bored raise presents problems that can be overcome by the application of shotcrete using a remote system.

Proper design and application is important in the successful operation of these key components. This paper includes a historical review of component design and application and an overview of the important dynamics and limiting factors. Actual applications and simulation models are used to demonstrate the correct use of these devices.

Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corp. conducted pressure-oxidation pilot plant studies on refractory carbonaceous gold ores from the Twin Creeks Mine in Nevada. The tests were conducted at Hazen Research Inc., Golden, CO, during 1993 and 1994. Laboratory investigations using CIL cyanidation after batch pressure oxidation demonstrated gold recoveries of 90% to 95%. However, pilot plant testing showed that several of the same ore types responded very poorly, with gold extractions of only 45% to 75%. Plant testing was suspended for approximately four months while extensive research was conducted to determine why these ores responded poorly and to identify potential solutions. This paper describes the batch and pilot plant test results, the extensive research activities that eventually identified the cause of the gold recovery problem and the final semicontinuous and continuous pilot plant operations that confirmed possible solutions. Final pilot plant results showed gold recoveries that were consistently greater than 90%.

Bauxite mine rehabilitation is an important stage of today’s bauxite mining activities. To get an overall picture on those activities the International Aluminum Institute (IAI) has been carrying out Bauxite Mine Rehabilitation Surveys since 1991. The most recent survey from 2003 covers 70% of the world’s bauxite production and 23 corresponding companies from 12 countries. The survey activities show that nearly all operations refer to a sophisticated environmental management strategy. By setting up a review scheme based on the principles of the Global Reporting Initiative the compliance of this survey to aspects of Sustainable Development has been reviewed. The Clarification of a multitude of aspects based on the GRI guidelines helped to structure recommendations and relate them to the survey as such but also to the different stakeholders involved.

Research is currently being conducted at the Colorado School of Mines in the use of high-pressure water for scaling down loose rocks in underground mine openings. In addition to improved miner safety, the adhesion strength of shotcrete applied to rock surfaces treated with high-pressure water is also increased significantly, resulting in improved overall support capabilities of the shotcrete layer. Test results show an increase in adhesion strength by a factor of four on a concrete test wall cleaned with water at 21 MPa (3,000 psi) as compared to a surface cleaned at 0.7 MPa (100 psi).

This paper shows two applications of artificial intelligence models in process development. In the first application, a heuristic fuzzy correlation can predict flotation behavior in bench scale based on feed characteristics for a high variability copper ore, as well as to predict plant performance for a feasibility project evaluation, minimizing its risk. The second case study shows the use of neural networks to model the iron ore sintering, correlating ore characteristics and operational parameters with sinter properties. With this application, CVRD aims to establish a new step on iron ore product evaluation and customer support.

The stability of mine roofs in permafrost zones is determined mainly by temperature and ice content. The deformation resulting from creep and temperature-dependent physical properties of frozen rock mass is the dominant component of total deformation. Roof bolts can consolidate the roof and control its deformation. In this paper, a finite-element model, for the analysis of the effects of roof bolting in a frozen rock mass is presented. The model includes the variables normally encountered when analyzing the effects of roof bolting in rocks. It also accounts for properties unique to frozen rock mass: creep deformation and the change in Young's modulus with changing temperature. The model shows that, as bolt spacing decreases, there is a trade-off between increased roof stability from increased mechanical support and decreased stability from increased conduction of heat into the frozen roof. This result was expected and shows that, for a given set of rock-mass conditions, including ice content, temperature, particle size, etc., there is an optimum bolt length and bolt density for minimum roof deflection.

INTRODUCTION Mine waste monitoring and management is essential when the industry is being required to accept the environmental liability for all generated, stored and disposed solid and hazardous waste. Environmental regulations mandate the operator to minimize waste production while requiring the operator to cleanup existing contamination. Since these requirements are being enforced, many operators do not have a clear under- standing, whether their existing operation will or could be required to adopt remedial plans to mitigate off-site contamination impacts. The following methods, using conventional and advanced geostatistical methods, provide a tool to make appropriate assessments whether existing or potential contaminant issues are present. BACKGROUND Generated solid wastes from mining operations are currently exempt from Solid Waste Disposal Act (SWDA) Sub- title C (RCRA), statutes and promulgated regulations, however, compliance with SWDA Subtitle D statutes and regulations is required. In order for the mining operator to be exempt from hazardous waste regulations, the operator must demonstrate that generated waste does not have hazardous waste characteristics. In many instances the operator will be able to use statistical tools and their existing data to determine whether their site could be a potential hazardous waste liability. METHODS The following statistical and geostatistical methods can be used to determine whether existing wastes could be a regulatory concern. The following presents a brief discussion of standard statistical methods and discusses, in greater detail, how advanced geostatistical tools can be used to define potential waste issues. The following will discuss how data can be screened, "Data Filtering and Reporting"; how data can be evaluated using "Conventional Statistics"; followed by a detailed discussion o f "Geostatistical and Estimation Techniques" and "Statistical Modeling". Data Filtering and Reporting Data filtering is the simplest, but potentially the most powerful statistical tool because data can be easily sorted to meet regulatory reporting requirements. Filtering includes unions and intersections of data such as date, maximum and minimum values of one or several variables. Using the data base presented in "Mine Waste Data Base Management Procedures", Robinson and Hagar, 1987, an example of a filter group is presented.

Relationships among mining industry, society and environment have been historically complex due to its environmental impacts. In the Chilean mining industry, repetitive and small spills of fuel during maintenance of machinery have been adsorbed by desert soils and sawdust to control environmental pollution. The froth flotation is the main technology to recover specific mineralogical species from sulphide ores. Flotation reagents are expensive and representing an environmental risks due to its physics properties. Our objective was to investigate the feasibility of applying bioremediation as a cost-effective alternative technology to physical-chemical treatments and to evaluate the efficacy of biosolids as foaming agents. Our results show that the bioremediation is feasible by use of the autochthonous microbial communities and biosolids could be used as new environmental-friendly organic reagents. This research discloses a sustainable bioremediation process and industrial ecology model based on these two successful cases.

Many mining companies try to fight their way up from small operator and exploration company to major producer. Not many companies make it. Cambior Inc., formed in 1986, is one company well on its way to making it as a major operating company. In 1993, Cambior surpassed 15.5 t (500,000 oz) of gold production and began operations at its world class Omai gold mine in Guyana. At the same time, the company has embarked on a program of geographic and minerals diversification. Cambior, a Canadian company, now has interests in eight mines, three development projects and more than 100 exploration properties in North and South America. The company’s goal is to derive 70% of its income from gold and 30% from base metals and other minerals. Cambior’s moderate diversification into base metals gives protection against negative gold price fluctuations. It also balances the typically short term gold mines and the longer term base metal mines.

The US minerals industry, as well we know, has been hit hard by the recent recession and is faced with what is projected to be a slow recovery. Even so, there was an underlying feeling of optimism at American Mining Congress' International Mining Show in Las Vegas, NV, Oct 11-14. More than 25,000 people attended during a particularly rough financial year, dispelling fears that attendance would dip sharply below 1978's 30,000 plus tally. The equipment expositionheld every four years-was the largest show of its kind this year in the Western Hemisphere in terms of exhibit space, providing an extensive view of mining-related equipment. In addition to the nearly 700 exhibits occupying more than 445 hm2 (11 acres), 20 technical sessions were held covering topics ranging from minerals availability and the state of the mining industries to communications, computers, and accounting. Government officials were well represented, with six US senators and five US representatives participating in various convention functions. Sen. Paul Laxalt (R-NV) was the keynote speaker at the welcoming luncheon. Other senators involved in the show included Howard W. Cannon (D-NV), Pete V. Domenici (R-NM), James A. McClure (R-ID), Frank H. Murkowski (R-AK), and Steven D. Symms (R-ID). Representatives on the program were Joseph M. Gaydos (D-PA), Guy Vander Jagt (R-MI), Don Young (R-AK), Jim Santini (D-NV), and Ceil Heftel (D-HI). There were also many international vistors at the show, including exhibitors from Australia, Austria, Canada, England, Finland, Sweden, South Africa, and West Germany. Equipment Highlights Equipment and services featured at the exposition ranged from aerial mapping to wire rope. Aisle space alone between exhibits exceeded 8 km (5 miles). And the companies represented ranged from small businesses to large corporations. Some of the company products described here are representative of the many exhibitors in attendance. Atlas Copco's extensive display of rock drilling and tunnel and shaft boring equipment featured its Boomer H-201, the newest addition to its line of underground drifting rigs; the ROC 306, a new track-mounted, high pressure down-the-hole drill rig; a new hydraulic surface crawler drill, the ROC 712H, designed for small and medium-size holes in quarries and small open-pit mines; a computerized analysis system, CARE (see page 1570), designed to project productivity and operating costs for various mining operations; several electro-hydraulic loaders, including the new rail bound LM E60 and LM E80, and two Hagg-loaders-the 7HR and 10HR-that use two digging arms to rake and guide muck; a mechanized blasthole charging system; rock bolting equipment and its new Swellex roof bolting method; Sandvik Coromant drill steel and bits; and its new Jarva R200 raise boring machine.

INTRODUCTION Shaft sinking represents a relatively small proportion of the activities involved in mine development. Because of this limited utilization, shaft sinking has been one of the most difficult functions to mechanize. Although shaft machines (muckers) were introduced more than 30 years ago, the first machines were low-capacity units, and machines of this type did not gain wide acceptance by the mining industry until the late 1950s. However, the increasing depth of underground mines and the es¬calating costs of labor have increased the benefits obtain¬able from high-speed shaft sinking. The result has been a growing need for high-capacity shaft machines. Most of the machines available at the present time have been developed by modifying existing equipment to increase the payload capacity and performance. AVAILABLE SHAFT MACHINES In general, shaft machines may be classified accord¬ing to the types of digging mechanisms and the mecha¬nisms of operation. The available digging mechanisms include clamshells, cactus grabs, front-end buckets, and backhoes. The mechanisms of operation can be classified as either pneumatic or hydraulic. Selection Criteria For efficient operation, the primary consideration in selecting a shaft machine is its capacity. The minimum capacity of the machine should match the capacity of the hoisting system at the ultimate depth of the shaft. In many cases, two machines may be needed to obtain a sufficient mucking capacity. The shaft dimensions and configuration often dictate the type of machine that may be utilized; for example, an overshot loader does not work well in a circular shaft that has a diameter of less than 5.5 m (18 ft). Similarly, a single Cryderman mucker is not suitable for a large-diameter shaft, nor is it applicable where very high sinking buckets are to be used. Other factors for consideration include the degree of material fragmentation, the abrasiveness of the rock, and the amount of ground water that is inter¬sected. Machine Descriptions Riddell Mucker: The Riddell mucker, illustrated in Fig. 1, was first introduced in 1948. This is one of the most common shaft machines in the medium-capacity range. The Riddell mucker consists of a hoisting and traveling mechanism that operates a clamshell suspended on cables. The early machines operated with a 0.3 m3 (10 cu ft) clamshell and had an hourly capacity of approximately 27 t (30 st). This type of shaft machine has gained wide acceptance throughout North America. Essentially, the Riddell mucker consists of standard components, such as the pneumatic tugger hoists that operate the clamshell. The carriage is suspended on rails that also serve as the blasting set, located immediately below the shaft timbers. To effectively position the clam¬shell in the shaft, the operator controls the carriage travel by means of wheels that are driven by a pneu¬matic motor. The Riddell mucker most commonly is used in rec¬tangular timbered shafts. However, some units have been installed with circular rails, allowing them to work in circular concrete-lined shafts. A popular practice with many Riddell muckers is to increase the capacity through the use of larger clamshells, often ranging up to 0.76 m3 (1.0 cu yd), in conjunction with more powerful tugger hoists. In some large rectangular shafts, two Riddell units have been used side by side to achieve a sufficient capacity. Cryderman Mucker: The Cryderman mucker, illus¬trated in Fig. 2, is another common shaft machine in the low- to medium-capacity range. Developed in the early 1950s, it also has gained wide acceptance throughout North America. Equipped with a 0.3 m3 (10 cu ft) bucket, the Cryderman mucker has an hourly capacity of approximately 23 t (25 st). The Cryderman mucker is operated entirely by means of pneumatic cylinders and a pneumatic telescopic boom. The boom is suspended from a sectional frame¬work that is usually located at one end of the shaft. "SUMMARY Every tunnel designer has to consider the power of water ingress when designing a new tunnel. Either you choose solutions with simple methods to divert the ingress water or a robust system with the intention that it will give gain on low maintenance costs and a long lifetime. This article describes a new method to divert ingress water in a robust way and more economical than traditional concrete lined tunnels. This system is based on a bolt grid suspending a water tight membrane, which is reinforced and covered with sprayed concrete. The method has been in limited use in Sweden since 2005 and with continuous improvement, still going on, it is now applied for the large project “Stockholm Bypass”, a 21km long highway project. TUNNEL MAINTENANCE RELATED TO WATER INGRESS The Swedish Transport Administration maintain approximately 190 various tunnels that is constructed by a number of different methods, (Swedish Transport Adm 2015). Commonly the ground conditions are good and fairly low ground support is needed. Contrary water and winter conditions can be sever, which gives high impact onto the tunnel design and in particular methods to protect against “frost and water ingress”. During a tunnels lifetime it is common that maintenance related to water ingress occurs several times and sometimes frequent occasions every year. Such maintenance costs and consequences of lost open time for the tunnel can rapidly become higher than the initial cost of the tunnel. Thereby it is obvious that spending time during design to evaluate requirements for a suitable system against water ingress is preferred. Icicles Icicles are formed when water is below freezing degrees and drips or run from an ingress point. At very cold conditions also water flows running at high velocity freeze into ice and a rapid growth can appear. If the integrity of the tunnel traffic area is interfered by icicles they urgently have to be removed before they cause an accident. Typically the tunnel or a part of the tunnel must be closed to do such maintenance. TUNNELS FROST AND WATER INGRESS PROTECTION IN SWEDEN In Sweden methods to perform “frost and water ingress protection” are primary developed for drill and blast tunnels as it is most common tunneling method. The foundation Swedish Rock Engineering Research has done a comprehensive report SveBeFo Rapport 77 that describes water and frost prevention in Swedish tunnels up to year 2005. Below is only slight description of those various methods. Lately some more attention is paid to concrete lined tunnels made by TBM since TBMs successfully built water tight tunnels in City Tunnel (Malmö) and Hallandsås Project. When environmental demands require maintained ground water levels, water tight tunnels made by pressurized concrete lining becomes more economical and on the same time also becomes protected from icicles and water drips."

Condition monitoring of conveyor belting has become an established tool for maintenance programming, replacement strategies and quality assurance for belt conveyor systems. What is less well known is that the condition of the conveyor belting is usually a symptom of problems in other areas rather than the problem source. This paper presents an overview of the state of the art in belt monitoring and the move towards on-line NDT systems. The use of belt monitoring data as an indicator for overall system design, maintenance and operation is also discussed.

The nonferrous industry has for many years maintained monitoring stations in agricultural areas in the vicinity of smelters to collect data concerning impact of smelter emission on agricultural crop production (Thomas and Cross, 1928). However, in 1967, the United States Congress passed the Clean Air Act which was amended in 1970 (Marchant, et al., 1977). The interpretation of this act by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) made it necessary for the industry to install extensive real-time ambient sulfur dioxide (SO,) monitoring systems. This was only the tip of the iceberg. Since that time as a result of additional laws and agency directives, it is now necessary to monitor concentrations of a number of substances -in both air and water. And unless there is a major change in government thinking, this trend will continue during the decade of the eighties. It is difficult to estimate the full impact of these laws. Nevertheless, the impact is large and affects every person in the United States today (Anon., 1972; Rockefeller, 1971; Nelson, Yeager, and Guptill, 1973; and Anon., 1975). It prohibits the burning of trash and paper in most areas of the country. It increases the cost of transportation and the price of motor vehicles. It increases the, cost of nearly everything that is manufactured. In industries which compete in the international market, it reduces their competitive position. In some industries the environmental impact is felt on costs of goods sold in the vicinity of 25% of the total production costs. The major portion of these costs is not due to the monitoring systems but instead is due to the increased cost of production facilities, equipment, and raw materials in industries that are required to comply with environmental regulations.

In every business today costs come under almost microscopic scrutiny. It's hard to conceive that less than 30 years ago there was no such cost consciousness apparent in overall industry. Railroads, through their almost absolute monopoly on freight handling, were one of the industries where little thought was given to overall costs. True regulation kept rates in line, but railroads did very little in the area of supplying equipment intended to help the shipper minimize his costs and at the same time result in savings to the rail carrier. During this period, except for isolated cases, railroads placed standard cars for loading. Most railroad car fleets consisted of box cars, hopper cars, flat cars and low side gondola cars certain roads having unique movements developed special cars to accommodate the particular product, but seldom did these cars move in general interchange service. Most of you are aware that several large companies built railroads of their own as an integral part of raw materials handling from remote sources to production plants located near concentrations of usage. On these railroads special cars were built with little thought to inter-change service. Examples of such railroads are the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range, the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern, the Union Railroad, the Bessemer and Lake Erie and the Birmingham Southern.
