1. Theory of Wet Dust Suppression Techniques Wet dust suppression is the utilization of a liquid for the control, reduction or elimination of airborne dust, or the suppression of such dust at its source. Effective control involves: a. The confinement of the dust within the dust producing area by a curtain of moisture. b. The wetting of the dust by direct contact between the particles and droplets of moisture. c. The formation of agglomerates too heavy to remain airborne, by combining small dust particles with each other and with the droplets of liquid. From the standpoint of economy, availability and safety, water is the ideal fluid. From the standpoint of effectiveness, however, it leaves much to be desired. As a result, a tech¬nique has been devised in which very small percentages of specially formulated dust control compounds are blended with water to greatly enhance its dust suppression qualities. The terms "dust control compounds, wetting agents and surface active agents" are frequently used interchangeably. Although dust control compounds represent a specific type of wetting agent, a great many wetting agents are far from satisfactory for dust control. "Wetting Agents" is a broad category which covers such items as emulsifiers, solubilizers, detergents, foamers, penetrants, thickeners, etc. Dust control compounds, on the other hand, are carefully formulated blends in which one or more special surface active agents have been incorporated.

In the Czech Republic nitrogen was first used for the fight against the mine fire in 1949 (Hajek,1969). In the years 1949¬1996 the consumption of nitrogen in the Ostrava-Karvina Coal Basin /OKB/ reached more than 220 mil. m-3. The main source of nitrogen in the OKB is a central pipeline now. Gas nitrogen is used for the prevention of spontaneous combustion in gobs of longwall faces. The nitrogen infusion technology (Froger,1985), often called "franca technology", has been applied in the Czech coal mines since 1982. The aspects of the nitrogen infusion technol¬ogy can be theoretically solved by the calculation of mixing two gas streams in the filtration space. Longwall faces are parts of the ventilation network of the coal mine. The intake airflow of the longwall face is divided into the airflow passing through the face and a part of air losses passing through the gob. Air leakages through the gob and nitrogen in¬jected into the gob mix there. There is the main problem to solve air leakages in the gob. Usually, the principles of the gob aerody¬namics were used by many authors (Glusberg,1988;Voracek, 1994; Sulkowski,1993; Michailov, 1995; Dziurzynski, 1995; Kolarczyk, 1995; Saghafi, 1995; Sedlaty, 1993) that are applied to our case as well.

Understanding ore variability is a key factor in the geometallurgical analysis of a deposit and is beneficial to process development and mine planning. Ore variability is a function of the mineralogy of a deposit, in terms of both ore and gangue minerals and their textural relationships. This study integrates optical microscopy and quantitative mineral analysis to characterize the mineralogy and texture from 13 samples from different lithologic units at the Bingham Canyon Mine. The analysis identified several parameters, such as modal mineralogy, alteration assemblages, distribution of mineral phases and alteration assemblages and microfracture and void space distribution. These parameters can have an impact on the materials’ behavior during processing. This study demonstrates that quantitative mineralogical analysis can provide detailed information for improved understanding of ore variability.

Cognitive representations and misconceptions of flow through circuits is an area which has received little attention from science educators, cognitive psychologists, or accident investigators. Misconceptions are also called Aristotelian thinking. They involve a person using primitive unscientific ways of reasoning to make decisions about events (Piaget, 1929; Nussbaum & Novick, 1982; McCloskey, 1983). The use of such primitive concepts leads to errors in reasoning about scientific and technical problems. The existence of misconceptions is well documented among children, adolescents, and adults involved in learning science concepts (Piaget, 1929; Cole & Raven, 1969; Clement, 1982; Mistrell, 1982; McDermott, 1984; Richardson, 1987). Concepts of flow through circuits are important because miners' conceptual errors about these aspects may be, in part, responsible for two fatal mine disasters. On at least two separate occasions, methane gas explosions occurred in underground mines when separate ventilation systems were connected (Elam, Fuller, Carter, Cavanaugh, Fesak & Painter, 1983; Fesak & Cavanaugh, 1984). A review of these disasters indicates that conceptual errors made by miners may have resulted in the accidents (Cole, Wala, Haley, & Vaught, 1987). In this study, co-author Andrzej Wala, stated that his research had "identified conceptual errors that may have caused the miners in these disasters to make fatal mistakes" (Cole et al. 1987), p. 167. Further exploration of these conceptual errors by Wala has led to the hypothesis that misconceptions of basic aspects of flow distribution changes in mine ventilation circuits, are at least, in part, responsible for some mine disasters caused by errors in ventilation systems (Wala & Cole, 1987). Why should these conceptual errors occur? Ausubel (1963) suggested that students come to a new area of study with their own conceptions or preconceptions about how a process operates. Furthermore, these preconceptions may be in conflict with the empirical data from the discipline. In such cases, learning becomes a process in which new concepts must displace or be re-molded from stable concepts that the student has constructed over many years (Clement, 1982). Given the existing research with misconceptions and the work of Wala and Cole (1987), it was hypothesized that experienced miners; either working miners, students of mining engineering, or professional mining engineers, harbored misconceptions about the formal or conceptual aspects of mine ventilation circuits. The misconceptions hypothesized to exist involved flow distribution changes in complex mine ventilation circuits; specifically, how does flow distribution change when a ventilation circuit pathway is altered? Given this information, the following research questions were proposed. Research Questions 1. Do experienced miners and mining engineers harbor misconceptions about mine ventilation systems? Environmental pressures on waste disposal are forcing pigment producers to use higher content TiO2 feedstocks with lower levels of trace elements. Despite this, 50% of the worlds TiO2 comes from ilmenite concentrates with only 37 -54 % TiO2 An industry growth rate of 25 % in the next ten years combined with trends to diminishing resources and lower grades for rutile (95 % TiO2) and leucoxenized ilmenite (55 to 90% TiO2) mean that unless new discoveries are made soon, the industry will become even more reliant on ilmenite. A hypothetical ideal feedstock is presented and strategies to obtain it are suggested. Reasons for some of the mineral specifications are given.

The goal of mine planning is to determine "the best" strategy to exploit an ore deposit during its workable life. Such strategy must be consistent with the objectives of the company and must be subject to the contraints imposed by economical, physical and geological conditions. Mine planning process may be broken down into three categories, according to the planning horizon: Long range, Short range and Operational. The shorter the scope of planning, the higher the level of details and the lower the degree of freedom associated to each plan. A long range plan defines the economic limit of mining at the mining life end of the deposit; it also can be used as an aid in the evaluation of the economical potential of a mineral deposit and as a guide for short range plans.

Both bolt profile shape and spacing (rib spacing) have been found to influence the bonding capacity of the grouted rock bolt. The bolt surface profile configuration has greater importance to rock bolting in strata reinforcement in mining than the steel rebar used in civil engineering construction. This is because a rock bolt in mining usually is subjected to greater dynamic loading than the steel rebar in civil engineering construction. The increased bonding capacity of a bolt is important when supported ground is either heavily fractured, faulted or the supported ground is of soft formation, typically that of coal measure rocks. Past laboratory studies have identified the bolt profile spacing as of significant relevance to bolt resin rock bonding increase, however, no attempt has been made to determine the optimum spacing between the bolt profiles spacing. Accordingly, a series of laboratory tests were carried out on 22 mm core diameter bolts, commonly used in Australian mines, installed in cylindrical steel sleeve. The study was carried out using both push and pull testing methods. The push test was carried out in 150 mm long sleeves while the pull testing was conducted in 115 mm long sleeves. Profile spacing tested include, 12.5, 25.0, 37.5, and 50 mm lengths. Additional studies undertaken include modelling the profile of the load-displacement data of pull testing. Bolts with a profile spacing of 37.5 mm were found to provide optimum load bearing capacity as compared to other tested profile spacings.

Slags generated by the ferrous metals industry can he used to produce high-value ceramic materials. The properties of these ceramics can be controlled by judicious choices of composition, additives, and processing parameters. Standard methods of materials handling, such as comminution and mixing, are as applicable to slag as to any other mineralogic raw material. In this study, foundry slag was ground, homogenized, melted, and, formed to produce a glass, and then heat treated to crystallize it into a high-strength glass-ceramic. The product shows promise as a low-cost, wear-resistant tile material that (-an he custom cast. This and similar materials made from slags and natural rocks are candidates for use as construction materials, acid-resistant piping, shock-resistant sheathing, rot-proof pilings, and, when foamed, even as pontoons.

Few Earth Scientists realize fully the assumptions they are making, willing or not, when pooling into a same histogram data coming from different locations and considering such histogram as an estimate of a probabilistic distribution. First they need the hypothesis of stationarity in space; second the presence of spatial auto-correlations implies that data be unequally weighted according to their relative locations and the degree of spatial continuity of the underlying phenomenon. The novel technique of indicator kriging allows construction of local or global histogram which can be considered as unbiased estimators of precisely defined probabilistic distributions, full account being given to the underlying continuity. Such estimates of local distributions can be used in mine planning for estimation of local recoverable reserves.

In most open pit gold mines ore waste selection is based on estimates made from blasthole samples. These estimates frequently are biased. While it is true that high grades and "outliers" can induce a bias they may not be the only reason for the persistent bias seen at many mines. This paper focuses on a source of the conditional bias. In this paper it is shown that the poor blasthole sampling can cause a conditional bias in the estimates.

The recent upswing in mining coincided with increased environmental concern. These trends have significantly increased regulation, but have not always provided sound environmental protection. Throughout, mining has remained passive, reacting to initiatives from outside. The high road to environmental protection must be an active strategy. The mining industry must take the lead and develop an environmental program effective in price and protection. It must involve all levels of mining. The mining industry should be the real environmental activist. We have the most to gain by sound environmental protection and the most to lose if the environment decays.

The manual moisture determination methods employed today by mineral processing plants falls short in providing timely information required for automatic control. The costs associated with transporting and handling concentrates still represent a major portion of the overall treatment price. When considering the cash flow of a mining operation, that is governed by both the smelter contract, with moisture penalties and the quantity and quality of the concentrates shipped, an efficient method of on-line moisture content would be a welcome tool. A novel on-line determination system for ore concentrate moisture content would replace the normally tedious classic manual procedure. Since the introduction of microelectronic¬based control systems, operators have strived to reduce the treatment costs to the minimum therefore a representative and timely determination of on-line moisture content becomes vital for control set points and timely feedback. Reliable sensors have long been on the "wish list" of mineral processors since the problem has always been that you can only control what you can measure. Today, the task of moisture determination is still done in the classical technique of loss in weight utilizing uncontrolled procedures. These same methods were introduced in the earliest base metal concentrators. Generally, it is acceptable to have ore concentrate moisture content vary within a range of 7 to 9%. Many times, delays in manually achieving reliable feedback on the moisture content results in the moisture varying from 5 to 12% before corrective actions can be made. This paper first reviews the traditional and widely available methods for determining moisture content in granular materials by applying physical principals and properties to measure moisture content. All methods are in some form affected when employed on mineral ore concentrates. This paper describes a unique and promising on-line moisture sensor in two mineral processing applications, which not only automates the tedious tasks but also results in reliable moisture feedback that can be used in the optimization of the de-watering process equipment such as pressure or vacuum filters and fuel-fired driers. Finally, two measurement applications will be presented to indicate the usefulness and to summarize the measurement requirements for the proposed method of employing drag force and mechanical properties of the material itself to determine the moisture content.

"A longwall gob is mainly filled with broken rocks from the collapsed roof and becomes a porous medium where explosive methane-air mixtures can accumulate. In bleeder ventilation systems, this mixture can migrate out of the gob into the longwall face and other active areas in the mine during barometric or ventilation-induced pressure changes. When external pressures change, the gob does not perceive this disturbance instantly but with a delay due to air flow resistance in the porous gob material. The delay of gob response to outside pressure changes increases the pressure differential across the gob and may cause an outflow of explosive air mixtures from the gob into the adjacent bleeder entries. With computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling, researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have evaluated the impact of gob pressure fluctuations on the outgassing of the explosive gas zones (EGZs), the magnitudes and rates of pressure changes, the volumes as well as the potentials location of outgassing if it occurs. INTRODUCTION The air pressure field in underground mines is controlled by many factors such as operating fan settings, ventilation controls, surface atmospheric conditions, and other local events that can intermittently disturb mine pressure, including blasting, roof falls, or inundations. Mine fan settings are rarely changed. Mine atmospheric pressure fluctuations due to adjustments in ventilation controls occur more often during the mining process. Atmospheric conditions and barometric pressures can generate fluctuations in mine pressure on a large scale. Atmospheric pressures change regularly every day but can fluctuate abruptly and become increasingly hazardous in adverse weather conditions. Investigations conducted in coal mines in the United States, Australia, Poland, and South Africa observed higher methane emissions from the gob during periods of falling atmospheric pressures, which led to mine explosions (McIntosh, 1957; Boyer, 1964; Kissell et al., 1973; Fauconnier, 1992; Belle, 2014; Wasilewski, 2014; Lolon et al., 2015). Falling external pressures are understood to cause potential outflow of explosive mixtures from the gob, while rising pressures may push fresh air into the gob. This phenomenon is widely known as gob breathing. The actual processes that trigger gob breathing are not fully understood, nor are the parameters that contribute to the process. Other major events such as roof falls or fan failures can also change the pressure conditions in the mine. In contrast to atmospheric pressure changes, these events can change mine pressures much more rapidly or immediately. TIME LAG AND GOB BREATHING CONCEPT In a bleeder ventilation system, the pressure in the gob is designed to be lower than that of the headgate entries and the longwall face. Air from the gob and gate entries flows towards the tailgate-bleeder returns. When the external pressures are disturbed, this designed pressure arrangement may change, potentially resulting in increased outflow from or inflow into the gob."

Water chemistry data were used to identify the sources of ground-water and surface-water inflow to the IOZ block cave mine. Water samples were collected to obtain vertical and lateral hydrochemical profiles within different levels of the underground workings. Water chemistry data were evaluated in conjunction with geologic and structural information to define controls on locations of ground-water inflows, and to select targets for drilling and interception of water. Drilling has intercepted water-producing zones that were previously unidentified through mapping and drilling. The program has resulted in a reduction in water inflows to the block cave area.

A new standard in gear cutting machines is now used to generate-cut large open gear sets to over 12.2 m (40 ft) in diameter at an AGMA quality level much higher than the accepted levels a short five years ago. In 1976, the Resources Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) aroused concern in the mining community about the regulation of mine waste streams under RCRA. In response, the Bureau of Mines initiated research in the late 1970's that addressed mine and minerals processing waste. Research included investigating improved environmental technology for metal, coal, non-metal, and emerging industries such as oil shale, tar sands, peat, and lignite. Environmental issues escalated in the 1980's. Proposed regulations addressing control technology for mining and mineral processing wastes prompted the Bureau of Mines to become involved in 1985 in an advisory capacity to the regulatory agency, the Environmental Protection Agency. In Fiscal Year 1988, the Bureau of Mines initiated a research program designed to provide the minerals industries with cost-effective solutions for ameliorating environmental effects of mining. Bureau research has led to advances in the areas of acid mine drainage control and mitigation, subsidence prediction and control, and control and treatment of solid wastes resulting from mining and mineral beneficiation. The Bureau also conducts research seeking new methods to remediate abandoned mine lands. A discussion of the mine waste issues is presented, followed by a summary of past and present research conducted by the Bureau of Mines.
