Adequate ventilation of coal mine working faces is the most important technique for controlling respirable dust and methane. Choosing the right technique presents some tough questions. US Bureau of Mines research has shown that to control respirable dust, you must contain the dust near the face, keeping rollback (turbulence) to a minimum. For methane, the most effective approach has been to use a blowing brattice, or tubing, and to create turbulence and disperse the face methane, allowing it to pass over the machine and into the return. It is immediately apparent that the two approaches may counteract one another, thus complicating the decision as to which system may be best for a given situation. At present. Bureau research has developed two successful machine-mounted face ventilation systems to meet these different needs and allow deeper cutting. The fan- powered dust scrubber is designed to control dust primarily associated with blowing face ventilation systems. The spray- fan controls methane on exhaust-ventilated sections.

Complicated processes of heat exchange and evaporation, leading to changes in the temperature and humidity of the ventilating air flow, take place during the driving of headings. In the case when virgin rock temperature is high, the increase in air temperature and humidity is significant. This causes a deterioration of climatic conditions in the headings. Procedures for predicting the changes in air temperature and humidity are discussed, together with appropriate calculations and computer programmes. Predicted results for example scenarios are used as a background for the selection of approaches and means to improve the climatic conditions in a dead-end heading using auxiliary ventilation.

As the environment conditions deteriorate with the intensification of mining, the problems of mineral resources protection and the development and introduction of various bio- technologies are becoming more pressing This paper is devoted to the description of an ecological simulation system, related to the exploitation of a mine in a given region. We suggest mathematical tools for solving the main problem, namely an expert system, providing the simulation of ecological models for the mining complex. On the basis of the suggested models, algorithms, and software facilities, numerical modeling was carried out, as well as systematic investigation and processing of the mining activities of the complex. AS a result of this work we have obtained more effective parameters of technological and economical measures of environmental protection.

The dissolution of metals from various metal/ non-metal mine tailings has been studied through column leach tests at US Bureau of Mines laboratories. Metal mobilization in unsaturated columns was consistently greater than metal dissolution in water-saturated columns. Leachate pH was also frequently lower when a leachant was passed through columns but showed a mixed residence-time dependence. On the other hand, metal and sulfate ion concentrations in the leachate increased with dry-cycle residence time. Results suggest that acid formation through atmospheric oxidation of pyrite may compete with non-acid-forming oxidation of other metal sulfides. The two processes lead to decreased pH and increased metal mobilization, respectively. Leach tests using sodium lauryl sulfate indicated that microbial activity was not a factor in these studies.

With the successful implementation of supervisory control on the Bagdad concentrator grinding circuits, steps have been taken to expand supervisory control to the flotation circuits. This paper discusses the design and installation of the slurry delivery systems, analyzing instruments, level control devices, reagent pumps and supervisory software. Emphasis is placed on the design and installation of a reliable slurry transport system to feed the Courier 30 online analyzing instruments. Total system availability has been measured at plus 95%. Phase 1 acceptance testing of the supervisory software indicates a notable increase in copper recovery with no significant change in final copper grade.

INTRODUCTION A trend which is obvious in the United Kingdom and is thought to be evident in other parts of the Western world is the disproportionate rise in the cost of tunnel mining labour compared with other tunnel cost increases. This disproportionate increase in labour costs has been accompanied by, and may be the result of, a shortage of skilled working labour. To combat this problem there has been a steady increase in the use of machines for excavation and for the erection of tunnel linings to keep the amount of skilled labour working below ground to a minimum. The typical tunnelling cycle, where the ground needs continuous support can be excavation, temporary support, temporary lining, grouting and permanent lining. It is obviously an advantage to combine as many of these operations as possible and carry out as much as possible by machine. Machines have been developed which will, either alone or used in combination with a shield, excavate and, when necessary, temporarily support the excavation. If a segmental lining is used, it can be so designed that it will form the permanent lining and reduce the cycle time and skilled labour requirement to a minimum. In cases in which the ground can be cut accurately to a smooth profile and will stand without support for a sufficient time, the lining can be expanded against the ground and the necessity of grouting eliminated. In cases in which ground will not stand without support, the usual method is to use a bolted lining and to grout behind it preferably as the shield is shoved forward. Most of the mines in Sweden are metal ore mines in hard rock and none of these mines are classed gassy because there is no methane emission. The risk of methane explosions in Swedish mines is therefore very small. Since the 1960?s, in Swedish mines, there has been a change from electric and pneumatic loaders and transport machines to diesel. Today in almost all Swedish underground mines diesels are used. One of the most common complaint from the underground mine- workers is the exhaust gases from the diesel-vehicles. This is a strong motive for attempts to assure a more comfortable environment. Another motive for a better efficiency of ventilation under ground is the increasing cost of energy for fans and for heating the air during winter. For the largest mine in Sweden, the Kiirunavaara Mine, 36% of the energy for ventilation is used for preheating the air during the seven months when the temperature is below zero. The air quantities used for ventilation are large. In table 1 a comparison of the ratio between yearly produced ore and waste rock and installed fresh 'air capacity is shown. [ ]

A mathematical model of a shaking table is being developed, for inclusion in a package for the simulation of gravity concentration. The general form of the modules and how they fit into the package is briefly described. The separation on a shaking table is controlled by a number of operating variables and the importance of these variables in the model development is discussed. The influence of wash water, feed pulp density, deck slope, deck amplitude and mass feed rate are reported. The form of the model is described being based on the probability of a particle of defined size and density reporting to a specific discharge site. The mathematical relationships which relate size and density distributions to variations in the operating parameters are presented. The use of these functions in the prediction of the performance of a shaking table is outlined.

The structure of an exploration model reflects a number of design considerations, one of which is the question or issue-to be investigated by the model. Thus, a model designed to evaluate the magnitude of risk and its economic implication to optimal decision making at each decision juncture of a multistage exploration architecture differs considerably from one designed to evaluate, say, the long run average cost of discovery, in which the architecture of exploration is suppressed and risk is simply an element of average cost. The perspective of the model examined in this paper is that exploration is investment in (purchase of) information and that the next stage of an exploration program is undertaken only when the expected value of information to be acquired in that stage exceeds its cost. Alaska is in competition with the rest of the world for exploration dollars. Providing a "seed package" of airborne geophysical data for the state's numerous mining districts encourages companies to begin more detailed exploration in more areas than they could have afforded on their own. When data are already available, the initial risk decreases for people involved in exploration. Airborne magnetic and electromagnetic data help ge¬ologists and geophysicists determine what rocks and structures are present under overburden and vegetation. These data form a fundamental package that exploration companies want before intensively exploring most regions. Individual mining companies have conducted their own geophysical surveys during the past several decades. However, these data are not available to other companies. The companies able to afford geophysical surveys have less money for ground exploration after purchasing expensive, private geophysical data. Therefore, they are not able to explore as many places as they might. Additionally, since data are not shared with other exploration companies, the proprietary surveys do not foster intercompany competition to move projects forward. Individual prospectors and small companies can not afford their own geophysical surveys. "It is more often than not the grassroots exploration efforts of the smaller operator that leads to significant discoveries," said Klaus M. A 2.5 meter diameter column has been successfully used in a 100 tph flotation plant at the Harbour Lights Mine in Leonora, Western Australia, to produce a final gold bearing sulfide concentrate from the ore in a single stage. This pioneering application of column flotation cells to rougher stage was pilot tested using a 11 cm column, which demonstrated column's capability in rougher, scavenger and cleaner flotation stages. A hybrid circuit involving columns and mechanically agitated flotation cell s was adopted for the commercial installation. This paper describes pilot plant results, design of the plant flotation circuit, and early results of commercial operation.

The contents of three platinum group metals (PGM-platinum, palladium and rhodium), from the spent automotive catalyst, and two NIST SRM (National Institute of Standard and Technology Standard Reference Material, Used Auto Catalysts) were determined by the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry. The XRF technique has been proven to be a fast, effective and accurate method in determining not only PGM but also other solid materials of less soluble for wet digestion analysis. The detection limit of the XRF analysis is better than that of the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry which usually requires significant dilution to avoid high dissolved solid concentration. However, the XRF technique suffers from a strong matrix dependent problem. The objective of this study was to examine the applicability of the XRF analysis where the sample matrix was not exactly the same as the standard materials with particular reference to PGM analysis. This study enabled to compare the effect of various matrices including alumina, iron, copper and nickel on determination of the contents of PGM.

Installation of a computerized mine monitoring and control system in two planned construction phases began in 1983. Phase one consisted of providing a central monitoring station located on surface for monitoring underground CO detection in Frood Mine's heated area. The implementation of this project annualized labour savings of $200,000. The cost of installation of an early fire warning system was $100,000. There are several CO sensor monitoring carbon monoxide trends through mine heated areas. To obtain an early warning, it is not good enough to know that a fire has started, but it is also necessary to know where the fire is located.

What is your assessment of the mining industry as we near the end of the 20th century? As it always has, the industry is continually changing. The recent rate of change has been hectic. Many mining-related commodities are selling at low prices. These include gold, silver, copper, coal and soda ash, to name a few. Lower prices place pres- sure on mining companies to increase efficiency through productivity, down- sizing or mergers. The short- term effect of this situation may adversely affect the individual SME member. But the long- term benefit is to build a stronger, more productive and internationally competitive mining industry. In addition, most of these metals and minerals have been historically cyclical in nature, and prices will rebound.

In this paper several leaching tests were per-formed to optimize the leaching section of a hydrometallurgical process for the recycling of alkaline and zinc-carbon batteries. Zinc and manganese oxides were dissolved by an acidic-reductive leaching using sulphuric acid and oxalic acid as reductant. Leaching tests were developed according to a full factorial design. The operational variables were pulp percentage, sulphuric acid concentration, temperature and oxalic acid concentration. Additional tests were performed to evaluate the precipitation rate of Mn and Zn oxalates. Finally a hydrometallurgical process were proposed for the recycling of alkaline and zinc-carbon batteries, in which Zn and MnO2 are recovered from purified solution by electrowinning: Zn is recovered as metallic compound, while Mn can be recovered as electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD), but recovery of further manganese compounds is possible with simple process changes.

In any operating mine, especially in precious metals operations, immediate improvements in profitability m readily achievable through more effective grade control. Just as the oil industry has come to recognize that enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in existing oil fields yields a higher return on investment than exploring for new oil, so too must the mining industry recognize the benefits of enhanced metal recovery (EMR). Current grade control practices are generally dismal. The very word "control" suggests a willingness to make the best of a bad situation -- as in "damage control" or "disease control" -- and a failure to perceive the opportunities for improved profit. While damage and disease can merely be controlled, success and improved profit can be engineered. This paper presents one approach to enhanced metal recovery. It shows how existing methods can be used to address the issue of ore/waste discrimination. The following sections outline the problem, describe the current state of the practice of grade control, propose an alternative approach and. illustrate the application of the proposed alternative to actual blasthole data from an operating gold mine.

Microorganisms, such as the bacteria Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, have been reported to depress pyrite flotation (Elzeky and Attia, 1987; Atkins, 1990). However, the depen¬dence of the depression on the type of organism or on suspension pH is still being determined. In this study, the relative effectiveness of various microorganisms (chemolithotrophic bacteria, chemoorganotrophic bacteria and yeast) over the pH range of 2 to 12 was studied. Screen¬ing tests using microflotation showed that every microorgan¬ism tested was capable of depressing naturally hydrophobic pyrite at acidic pH. Larger-scale experiments with both mineral pyrite and coal pyrite using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae as depressants, showed that these microorganisms are very effective depressants for mineral pyrite at acid pH, but they are largely ineffective at neutral and alkaline pH, where the mineral pyrite surface is not naturally hydrophobic. The flotation response of the coal pyrite was completely different from the mineral pyrite. The coal pyrite was most floatable near neutral pH, with the floatability decreasing in acidic or alkaline solutions. De¬pression of the coal pyrite by yeast was not selective between the pyrite and the associated coal under the experimental conditions.

Underground mine planning is largely manual and can demand considerable resources to generate a working plan and to perform limited tests of sensitivity to variations in geological and mining conditions. It is possible to use computer aided mine planning to automate many of the manual procedures to allow the planner to evaluate a number of layouts, extraction strategies, and schedules. his paper examines the simulation and scheduling of an under- ground coal mine operation through the-use of on- screen graphics. The simulation will provide a basis for predicting productivity and other relevant information over a specified number of shifts. The software developed is extremely user friendly and reduces the tedium of repetitive manual calculations inherent to mine planning and drafting to a minimum, thus offering considerable savings in an area that is widely recognized as extremely labor intensive.
