Property sales and acquisition are prominent features of today's coal industry. Before selling or buying a site, a company must know the property's economic net worth. Any evaluation of economic net worth would be inadequate if determinations of a property's environmental liabilities and costs were omitted. Short-and long-term costs can result from liabilities related to reclamation, water treatment, subsidence, and hazardous waste disposal. A structured, interdisciplinary approach can aid in the delineation, summation, and scheduling of these costs and liabilities.

"Three-dimensional geological modelling of coal mines is critical to the sustainable development of the mining industry. On the basis of comprehensively analyzing 3D geological modelling methods, according to the available data of mine such as geological terrain maps, cross-sections and boreholes, we present a 3D modelling method by integrating ArcGIS and 3D GeoModeller. Our motivation is to integrate the advantages of both software modules in processing, converting, integrating and transferring geological information. Special attention has been given to the data structure and processing flow. We build a 3D geological model of the Xieqiao coal mine and successfully extract the geological framework of the strata in the 11118 workface, which is consistent with that of the actual explored geology.Introduction/Background Pertinent impediments such as a lower information degree, the out-of-date information infrastructure and the low level of information management and decision-making make it critical for there to be improvements in mines. Modern exploration technologies favour the construction of digital mine. Digital mine promotes the transformation of the mining industry by integrating information, automation and intelligence to build safe, efficient, high-yield, green and sustainable mines. Three-dimensional geological modelling and visualization of mines are at the core of digital mine. Compared with traditional 2D geological data, 3D models express the various geological phenomena completely, as well as reproduce the spatial distribution of geological units quickly, allowing for the prediction of mining subsidence, better decision-making and improved geological analysis. Modelling methods such as multi-DEM, tetrahedral grid and the generalized tri-prism that are based on borehole estimation and interpolation data are used to construct 3D models of mine geology (Chen 1995,Wang et al 2003, Wu 2004a); nevertheless, these methods cannot fully use multi-source mining data, whereas multi-source integration methods can be used to build 3D models (Kaufmann and Martin 2008, Zhao et al 2009) but require user interaction in model construction and low automation in model updates. During coal production, a plethora of geological data is accumulated. The organisation of discreteinformation under dynamic conditions and the extraction of meaningful information to better service for three-dimensional modelling is a meaningful work (Wu et al 2004b)."

The chemical, oil, semiconductor, mining, and paper and pulp industries, as well as most other modern industries, are rapidly expanding the range of measurements used to characterize raw materials, process steps, intermediates, and final products. In addition, process variables such as temperature, pressure, and flow become more and more numerous, providing extra information on the state of the process. However, no matter how many sensors are added, the underlying sources of variations that drive the process behavior remain constant. On the other hand, the measuring frequency of these data has increased from once a day or once an hour to once, ten, or even hundred times a minute. This gives masses of data that are swelling in both directions (more variables and more observations). These data need to be properly stored, managed, and analyzed to provide diagnostics about the state of the process as well as an understanding of the relationships between different parts of the process and the product properties. Projection methods such as PCA (principal components analysis) and PLS (projection to latent structures) compress process data to informative summaries of the original variables. These can be shown on line, providing an efficient, graphically oriented suite of diagnostics regarding the "health" and performance of the process. The power of these methods is illustrated by two examples of industrial data in the mining industry.

Traverse anemometry is still widely used today. In this paper an investigation of the influence of three factors which are believed to contribute to the resulting error of the method, is reported. They are the shape of the traversing path, the size of the vane anemometers and the air velocity pattern. These factors are experimentally studied on a test facility developed specially for this purpose. Taking into account the results of 576 measurement sessions, as well as published information, some preliminary conclusions are drawn, and additional questions are raised.

Characterization of the size, shape, chemical composition, and mineralogical content of mine airborne dusts generally requires a larger mass of dust particles than is typically collected using traditional sampling devices. In this paper, the general design of a passive dust collector is described and the field results are presented. The collector was constructed of galvanized sheet metal duct with a resin-coated honeycomb to provide an elutriation-type system for particle collection. Several versions of the collector were used in the field portions of the research. The dust samples collected from underground coal mines were found to possess angular particle shapes, relatively consistent size distributions, and elemental compositions that showed relatively little variation, at least for the more prevalent elements. In addition, the distributions of particles sizes obtained from the passive dust collector appear to be similar to those of samples collected at the same time in a conventional personal sampler except that the passive device seems to collect a larger quantity of coarse, non- respirable particles. Conclusions on the suitability of this dust collector for collecting characterization samples are presented. In addition, the potential for using such a dust collection system for supplying dusts for biomedical research is discussed.

The Upshur Complex of Island Creek Coal Corp. consists of approximatly 35.000 acres of both surface and deep mine researves located in Upshur County West Virginia. The principle seams on the researve are the Middle and Lower Kittanning. Other mining in the area during the late 1960's and early 1970's produced surface mines that exhibited severely acidic drainage characteristics both during the mining phase, and after reclamation was completed. The Buckhannon River, the principal drainage for the area, is a high quality, lightly buffered stream, that is periodically stocked with trout. Because past mining had caused post mining acidic discharges and the Buckhannon River was a valuable recreational resource, mining permits for the area were put on hold by regulatory authorities, until solutions to the acid mine drainage questions could be addressed. In 1978, the director of the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources appointed a Task Force consisting of Industry, Regulatory. and Academlc participants. This Task Force was charged with gathering information and evaluating field procedures used during mining to prevent acidic mine drainage. In 1979, the group published a document titled "Suggested Guidelines for Mining in Potentially Acid Producing Overburdens" which summarized material handling and mining procedures that could be employed to help prevent the occurrence of post mining acid mine drainage. In 1982, a Technical Advisory Committee was appointed consisting of well known researchers in the field of acid mine drainage prediction and prevention. The group was charged with the task of conducting research in the field of acid mine drainage prevention. Mining conducted at the Upshur Complex between 1979 and 1986 employed various acid mine drainage preventative techniques recommended in the suggested guidelines manual and techniques concurrently being researched by the Technical Advisory Committee. Costs for the various techniques were documented and the resulting post-mining water monitored. The results of these evaluations are used by Island Creek in the planning of future mining operations in potentially acid prodcuing environments

Attempts have been made during the last three decades to establish a correlation between respirable dust dosage and the degree of progression of pneumoconiosis or silicosis amongst mine workers. Fair correlation has been possible only after the Johannesburg Pneumoconiosis Conference established mass concentration of dust in the respirable size range as the true measure of the incidence of pneumoconiosis. The author had established a good correlation between cumulative total respirable dust dosage as well as cumulative silica dosage and the category of pneumoconiosis according to ILO classification at Mufulira Copper Mine. Studies at Hutti also show a linear relationship between the average cumulative dust and silica dosage md the category of pneumoconiosis. However the maximum tolerable cumulative dust dosage for - prolonged exposure is 182 mg month/m3 - at Hutti as compared to 275 mg month/m3 at Mufulira. Similarly the maximum tolerable silica dosage for - prolonged exposure is Only 35 mg month/m3 at Hutti as compared to 55 mg month/m3 at Mufulira. The TLV for dust concentration at Hutti works out at 0.6 mg/m3 compared to 1.1 mg/m3 at Mufulira and the TLV of silica concentration at Hutti is 0.117 mg/m3 compared to 0.25 mg/m3 at Mufulira. The Hutti figure is however, closer to the TLV of 0.1 mg/m 3 recommended by ACGIH.

Feeding 600 pm X 0 raw coal to heavy media cyclones, along with the +600 pm size coal, produces an efficient separation of both the +600 pm and 600 pm X 150 pm sizes. Major advantages of the process include the elimination of desliming screens and secondary fines circuitry for cleaning the 600 pm X 150 pm size coal, and result in a very simple circuit. Incorporating four 660 mm diameter heavy media cyclones, the Providence Plant of Island Creek Corporation has operated efficiently for ten years with a magnetite consumption rate of less than 0.45 kg per ton of raw feed at a feed rate of 454 tph.

The role of growth conditions and adhesion of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans on the leaching of chalcopyrite was investigated. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans grown on sulfur, thiosulfate and ferrous ion substrates was used in this comparative study. Growth on sulfur, a solid substrate, requires bacterial adhesion unlike that required in the presence of soluble thiosulfate and ferrous ion in a mineral-salts medium. Solid substrate-grown cells showed higher rates of leaching than those grown in liquid media. An initial lag period noticed during leaching by solution-grown cells was absent when solid substrate-grown cells were used. Such a behavior is attributed to the presence of an inducible proteinaceous cell-surface appendage on the sulfur-grown cells. This appendage aids in bacterial adhesion onto the mineral surfaces. Such an appendage is absent in solution-grown cells, as substantiated by electrophoretic measurements. The importance of bacterial adhesion and the direct mechanism in leaching by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans are demonstrated.

In 1988, the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) published an information bulletin stating that whole diesel exhaust should be considered a probable carcinogen. Since then, regulations across Canada and the United States (Mine Safety and Health Administration, MSHA) have looked at appropriate exposure limits for underground mine workers. In Canada, an interim standard of 1.5 mg/m3 Respirable Combustible Dust (RCD) has been adopted by some provinces and is being looked at by others. MSHA is considering levels as low as 0.5 mg/m3 soot. Golden Giant, being aware of regulatory developments, decided to look at means of reducing diesel particulate on thier large production machinery. This machinery (LHDs and haulage trucks) is powered by Detroit Diesel 71N Series engines and is used to produce 3000 tonnes of ore/day with a longhole mining technique. Having looked at the various control technologies, it was decided to evaluate the potential of using diesel particulate filters with a copper-based fuel additive for regeneration (the process by which collected particulate is burned off). This paper outlines the control technology used and the results of the field evaluation indicating the benefits to the underground mine worker.

When blowing ventilation is used on a mining section, a machine-mounted scrubber is often required to maintain face dust levels below 2 mg/m3. Operation of the scrubber also affects airflow patterns at the face and the dilution of liberated methane. Reductions in scrubber flow can result in increased methane concentrations. During mining, loading of the scrubber filter with dust is likely to reduce airflow. Detecting changes in scrubber flow is difficult, especially with extended cutting, because the machine must be operated from a remote location. Tests were conducted to demonstrate how scrubber airflow could be continuously monitored at a remote location. Three variables, static pressure at the fan inlet, differential pressure across the scrubber filter, and scrubber fan motor current, were continuously monitored while the scrubber filter was incrementally loaded to reduce air flow. The results show that monitoring each variable provided a way for estimating scrubber flow.

Techniques for optimization of mineral processing flowsheets are reviewed. Though not yet widely used in the minerals industry, approaches for chemical process optimization based on successive quadratic programming (SQP) algorithms may be employed to determine optimum unit design and control settings for a mineral processing flowsheet. Moreover, in certain mineral processing flowsheet applications, specialized techniques can be applied because of the nature of the system relations. These techniques offer advanta es in efficiency. Moreover, their capability exceeds that o f the SQP approaches since simultaneous optimization of circuit configuration and unit controls can be addressed.

A model incorporating rate and residence time to describe the froth flotation process was used to provide data for the evaluation of various kinetic flotation models and to provide scale-up information from laboratory to industrial scale coal froth flotation. Rate constants were determined in laboratory and plant froth flotation tests and the residence time distribution was measured for a bank of four 21 ft 3 (0.6 m3 ) WEMCO cells treating Upper Freeport seam coal and a bank of four 300 ft 3 (8.5 m3 ) cells treating Lower Kittanning seam coal. It was found that a lag time for continuous flotation should be incorporated into scale up models and that a kinetic froth factor ratio of between about 2.0 and 2.8 should also be used to scale up data from laboratory to plant scale.

The long-term goal of the Collaborative Research Centre 525 is the identification of options for the resource-sensitive supply and utilization of metallic raw materials. In order to address these issues, an integrated resource management system for metallic raw materials was developed and tested. Simulations were carried out, using the tools and methodical approaches developed in this system, in order to compare alternative operating scenarios for aluminium and copper. However, before these alternative operating scenarios could be formulated and assessed, it was necessary to develop a consistent set of indicators to monitor progress towards sustainable development in the processing and utilization of metallic raw materials. The primary objective of the centre is to develop a set of indicators, which adopt a holistic approach to resource management, thereby enabling the assessment of different operating scenarios within the broadest possible context. The target audience for this research consists of decision-makers in the realms of politics, business and industry, as well as NGO?s.

G. GREGORY BRYAN 33.1-DEFINITIONS 1. Engineering-Engineering may be defined simply as the science and art of making materials and energy serve the purposes of mankind. There are many fields of engineering, each with specialized branches. The basic fields are: civil, mechanical, electrical and chemical. Others may be specialized phases of one of these or a combination of two or more of them. Mining engineering, for example, requires a working knowledge of construction, mechanics, electricity, metallurgy, geology, accounting and economics, in addition to mining techniques or methods. Mining geology and geological engineering involve rocks and their structure and the forces that act upon them, and chemistry, physics and mechanics also are important to practitioners in these fields. Metallurgical engineering requires chemistry and physics but also a working knowledge of mechanics and electricity. The fields of engineering with which this section are concerned are those primarily involved in the finding, mining, processing and utilization of the natural mineral resources of the earth. They include geology, mining engineering and metallurgy, each with several specialized subdivisions. 2. The Engineer-The engineer is an individual who has had specialized training to qualify him to practice the profession of engineering. The term engineer is used here in its broadest sense to include such professions as certain applied branches of geology, physics and chemistry, whose practitioners may not have acquired engineering degrees but who, nevertheless, by training and experience in some area of the minerals industry, qualify under the above definition. To become a successful engineer, a person should have certain pronounced aptitudes and preferences, even before embarking upon the requisite course of training. Among the chief qualifications that the engineer-to-he must possess are: (a) a natural inclination toward mathematics and the physical sciences, and (b) intellectual and moral honesty. Among the qualities the student engineer must develop are: (a) independence of thought, open-mindedness, sound judgment and the ability to observe, deduce, plan and apply solutions, (b) the ability to articulate and convince, and (c) the ability to organize and direct the activity of others. These qualities are normally developed through sound education, followed by pro¬gressive experience. 3. The Consulting Engineer-The consulting engineer is an engineer primarily in the business of furnishing specialized advice and engineering services on an intermit¬tent, part-time or occasional basis to clients who do not have continuous or full-time need for those services. He must be able to make and take full responsibility for decisions and recom¬mendations where original thought is required. He should not be confused with the engineer, surveyor or technician who also may furnish services on an intermittent basis, such as regular periodic surveys, the overseeing of drilling programs and other such routine work as may require little original thought and planning. 33.2-THE PROFESSION OF CONSULTING ENGINEERING 33.2.1- QUALITIES REQUIRED A successful consulting engineer must first have, as a minimum, the qualities and preparation of an engineer. Three sedimentation ponds had their performance evaluated before and after installation of modifications. Each pond had a floating baffle installed, two had siphon outlets, and one had a floating outlet device. Baffles inhibited short circuiting, and the outlet devices retarded flow following a rainfall event and drained the pond, creating a large storage volume to maximize detention time. Total suspended solids and settleable solids tests were measured on samples of influent and effluent to evaluate pond performance. Particle size analyses were conducted on samples containing measurable amounts of solids. Performance improved in each pond, with baffles providing the major improvement.

The purpose of this work is to conduct a preliminary analysis of the spatial variations of the thickness of lignite layers in the area of the Amyndeo mine, and to estimate the lignite reserves of the mine. The reserves are estimated by the method of the Voronoi diagrams, using a group of mirror points to close the polygons around the boundaries of the mine. Two data sets are investigated. The first one corresponds to an exhausted part of the mine. The derived reserves estimates are compared with the actual data obtained by the Public Power Corporation (PPC) to validate the analysis. The second data set extends over the entire mine, and it is used to derive an approximate estimate of the total lignite reserves. A geostatistical analysis of the total layer thickness is performed. The experimental semivariograms are evaluated for both data sets in different spatial directions. Two possible theoretical models for the experimental semivariogram (the exponential and a novel Spartan model) are compared and discussed. An interpolated kriging map of the total thickness variation is produced accompanied by a map of the kriging precision. The performance of kriging interpolation is discussed in terms of cross validation measures.

Determination of the state of an underground fire plays an important role in fire fighting, rescue and reopening operations. This is normally achieved by the analysis and interpretation of fire gases taken from the fire zone. However, drawing conclusions from gas analysis is not an easy task and needs specialist skills, expertise and experience that are usually beyond the knowledge of the officials in a mine. The complexities of a mine fire and the uncertainties of available information often make effective fire fighting decisions difficult if not impossible. This paper describes a knowledge based expert system that can aid in the diagnosis of sealed coal mine fires. Using a commercially available shell, the expert system has been designed to accommodate a series of diagnostic rules replicating the reasoning logic that would be used by human experts. The system allows the diagnosis of explosibility of the fire zone and trends of various fire ratios to be easily visualised for decision making. By continuously analysing the incoming information, the system is able to provide a rapid assessment of the situation of a sealed mine fire prevailing under specific mining and geological conditions. In addition, short term trends in fire behaviour can be predicted and possible fire control actions recommended. An example is given and shows how this system can be used as an analytical tool in various ways to assist the combating of coal mine fires. Further development of the system is discussed.

Certain bituminous coals are known to contain appreciable quantities of natural fossil or subfossil resin. Such resinous coals are found in the western US, particularly the Wasatch Plateau coalfield of UT. Some of the seams in this field contain an average of 5% resin. This fossil resin has been recovered by gravity and/or flotation processes since 1929. Resin concentrates thus produced are of low quality and are usually refined by solvent extraction. The purified resins are of commercial importance in the adhesive, coating, rubber. and ink industries, etc. An improved flotation technique has been developed which involves ozone conditioning to selectively float resin from high-volatile bituminous coal. In 1981 a Zn-Ag-Pb deposit was discovered in the vicinity of Molai, Greece. Subsequently, it was determined to be of the Kuroko type. The geology of various areas in the southeast Peloponnesean Peninsula is similar to that of the Molai deposit. Since favorable geologic criteria are present, absent, or unknown in varying degrees in all areas, it was deemed necessary to classify and rank the prospective areas according to the level of information available. For each level of information, an ore discovery model based on pragmatic exploration criteria was developed, enabling the favorability of occurrence to be calculated for each area. A Monte Carlo simulation was used to calculate the probabilities, the input data consisting of quantitative and qualitative estimates of the geologic criteria for each area. Three levels of information were modeled : Level A consisted of 9 criteria, level B of 12 criteria, and level C of 20 criteria. The three levels of information were tested on the Molai area. The results exceeded expectations, showing the gen¬eral trends which control mineralization at the lowest level of information. With an increase in the level of information, geological trends become more evident and a differentiation can be made between areas containing Cu mineralization, exhibiting a low probability, and areas likely to contain Zn-Ag-Pb mineralization. The models were then applied to the neighboring areas - only level A and B were available.
