The White Pine room-and-pillar mine started in 1955 from a suboutcrop, down gentle dips, and with a competent sandstone roof. As mining depths increased, extraction decreased 1% every 35 feet. Moreover, roofs became shaly and less competent, and regions of high fault and joint densities, sometimes with and some- times without high lateral stresses, increased the tendencies towards roof falls. Instinctive reactions towards narrower openings did not alleviate the problem. Careful consideration of rock mechanics principles culminated in the development of two variants to the conventional room-and-pillar mining system based on the concept of stress relief through load deflection. The two systems-EquiAdvance Cave, and PressureArch Panel Mining-are complementary. The objective of the former system is to provide relief from lateral stresses through advance caving and in the process also to achieve higher extraction at depth. Where surface subsidence cannot be allowed, the alternative PressureArch Panel concept is utilized to provide stress relief and moderately high extraction ratio. Both systems have been under trial for over three years and, together, produced over three million tons of copper ore. These two systems, and their production test results to date, are described.

By international standards, Indian coal seams are not very gassy. In some of the major coalfields such as Singareni, Wardha, Pench, Chirimiri, Rewa and Talcher Coalfields practically no methane is emitted from the coal seams. Even in the coalfields of Ranigang, Jharia, Bokaro and Karanpura, all of which are situated in the basin of the Damodar river, only a few mines are faced with excessive gas emission problems. But the number of such mines is increasing as deeper reserves are being worked and already the exploitation of some of the best quality coal reserves in the country is held up pending measures for control of methane emission in these mines. Even in mines having no previous history of gas emission, methane has been met near dykes and faults. This was dramatically revealed by an explosion in Dhori colliery in 1965 wherein 268 persons got killed. Until that time, Dhori colliery was considered as a non-gassy mine but on that fateful day gas came to the workings through a freshly exposed fault plane. Similar incidences of ignition of firedamp in so-called non-gassy mines have also occured in the past, for example, in Chapui Khas and Samla Dalurband collieries, but the casualty figures were not as high. After the Dhori explosion, all Indian coal seams have been declared to be gassy, whether presence of methane is detected in the workings or not.

Predictive maintenance technologies include vibration analysis, tribology, infrared thermography, ultrasonic detection and electrical measurements. These technologies have been applied to large electric mining shovels at the Cyprus Sierrita Mine outside of Tucson, AZ. The predictive maintenance program was initiated on the P&H models 2300 and 4100 electric shovels during August 1996. Results of these technologies have shown the potential for improving electric min- ing shovel availability and minimizing maintenance costs. Predictive technologies provide the tools to assess machinery condition. Availability is enhanced by the condition-based planning of component replacement. Maintenance costs are minimized by focusing resources through condition-based prioritization.

The different types of processes used in fine coal beneficiation in the Republic of South Africa are listed, together with data giving an indication of their separating efficiencies The two classes of coal, fines and ultra-fines, present in the -0,s m fraction of the run of mine coal are discussed, with special reference to their beneficiation characteristics. Using those properties, together with the data on plant efficiency, case studies are worked out to indicate the advantages and disadvantages of the different processing routes available. The paper closes with an indication of areas where research is required to enable some of the processes to be applied to a greater extent than is presently the case.

INTRODUCTION Traditionally mineral processing equipment has been procured based on (equipment) specifications prepared by the engineers. As newer materials of construction are being used for equipment manufacture and plant control systems become more sophisticated, the need for thorough and detailed specifications is greater than ever. For example, it is not uncommon to find plants looking at grinding circuits consisting of semiautogenous mills with variable speed, gearless, drives of large horsepower. Technical specifications for the mill, wrap- around motor and control system must, therefore, be carefully prepared to ensure that the respective equipment supplied by vendors meets overall grinding needs. Various engineering and design companies have expended considerable time and effort in developing the specification format. Equipment manufacturers have also given significant effort to developing data sheets aimed at collecting information regarding not only the duty of the equipment, but also the conditions under which it will be operated. As engineers moved from one company to another, the specification format became cross-fertilized and further developed. As a result, specifications on file with various engineers have improved considerably over a period of time. Equipment specifications from earlier projects are commonly used as a basis for tailoring new ones. To keep equipment specifications short, general technical considerations are often compiled as separate specifications. For example, general considerations applicable to the design, manufacture and supply of the mechanical equipment are consolidated under "Standard Requirements for Mechanical Equipment” and included along with that specified for purchase. As the economic feasibility of the project has been established during earlier studies, purchase-related activities can be initiated following completion of the specifications. Procurement itself is a major activity, however, in this chapter only those activities directly related to the purchase of equipment will be discussed. Thermal pretreatment can significantly improve industrial comminution operations by reducing energy requirements and increasing mineral liberation. The effect of pretreatment using conventional and dielectric heating followed by quenching on the fracture characteristics of a number of single and multiphase brittle materials has been investigated using the Ultrafast Load Cell. It has been observed that very significant reductions in both fracture energies and the material integrity (damage) were achieved by heating followed by water quenching.

Control circuit failures contribute significantly to continuous miner downtime. The time required to put the machine back into production is a function of the time required to diagnose the problem, obtain parts and make the repair. Of these, the diagnostic time is often the largest. A microprocessor-based system with the ability to diagnose all of the common control circuit failures was designed, installed on a continuous miner and tested. This paper summarizes the development of the diagnostic system and provides examples of the system's diagnostic capabilities. Implementation issues and the hardware used for the prototype are briefly described. Comments on the system's performance are also presented.

In mining industry, one of the simplest methods to smooth the standard deviation of a given ore controlled property is to build longitudinal blending piles. The effect of homogeneization is obtained due to the fact that an entire cross-section of the pile is reclaimed at each time. The variance of the pile output is the sum of the internal cross-section slice variance plus the reclaimed slice variance. While the first term is a tipical short-term parameter and is absorbed by the process, the second one may be or may not be absorbed. The goal of designing blending piles is to minimize the reclaimed slice variance. Conditional Simulation as described in this paper, is an alternative method to do it. It is devised to design longitudinal blending piles, taking into consideration economical, geometrical and statistical parameters of the ore to be blended, in order to estimate the resulting effect. It presents advantages in relation to other methods for its adaptability and flexibility in simulating pile performances.

Safety reasons render necessary the advanced calculation of the amount of methane degassing from a longwall in the scope of the ventilation planning of mines. Today empirical methods, which are based on observations of operational procedures, are used for the calculation of the amount of methane. Despite of constant improvement those calculations are not always sufficient. In particular calculations which are based on operational facts but not proved by experience are not reliable. Most of all these calculation procedures lack physical-analytical descriptions of the procedure itself, presenting only the effects on important parameters such as the distance between seams in the roof or floor or gas pressure. Tschersich [Tschersich 961 developed an analytical model for an advanced calculation by analysing the degassing of seams in the roof and floor and the physical parameters of gasflow. This model might correct the lacks of existing procedures and improve the precision and reliability of additional calculations. The model simulates the emission record in seams of the roof and the floor. It takes into account not only a multitude of parameters such as the distance to adjacent seams and gas pressure but also the depth of seams, gas content, rank of carbonification, rock temperature, face advance rate, initial and succeeding mining and the face length. In order to comprehend and to verify those correlations we extended the model of Tschersich and programmed this enlarged model using the computer language C++. Aim of this research is to guarantee a much higher accuracy in calculating methane emission caused by mining. The improved planning is expected to result in more safety and better prevention of high methane con- tent in ventilation as well as in a better use of the capacity of the mining equipment. The application [Drijver, lnderst 961 of the ex- tended model will also be very useful in the course of research projects as it allows computer simulation, i.e. in-situ research can be extensively limited or even replaced.

Relative quantitative analyses of certain mineralogical and textural properties of carbonate rocks were made with an image analysis computer. The instrument, referred to by its manufacturer as a Quantimet; consists of a petrographic microscope, a television camera and monitor, a detector, an electronic computer, and a read-out meter. Measurements were made on polished and etched specimens, standard thin sections, and on scanning electron micrographs of carbonate rocks. Critical to the success of the analysis is the preparation of the specimen in such a way that good optical contrast is obtained between the various petrographic components. The dolomite content, the pore volume, pore boundary projection, and pore size distribution of high-purity carbonate rocks were measured by image analysis methods. The frequency and size distribution of void inclusions in dolomites were determined by image analysis of scanning electron micrographs of cleaved surfaces. Image analysis methods permit rapid and quantitative assessment of various microscopic properties. The results are of reasonable accuracy and certainly are relative quantities that may be used to characterize carbonate rock materials.

INTRODUCTION During a recent panel discussion on the topic of millwater antiscalants, the question was posed: "What would you like to see in the future?" Answer: 'We need an antiscalant that: can be fed without a pump (no maintenance), functions on residual basis (no fault), can be tested for colorimetrically in sub-part-per- mi 11 ion concentrations (no guessing) and will recycle back to the mill from tailings (no cost).” Impossible? Based upon today's level of technology, such a product does not exist. However, a few of the qualifications listed above are certainly food for future thought. Meanwhile, progress is being made in upgrading three essential elements in this critical area of ore processing. They are: 1. Antiscalant reagent research and development. 2. On-line monitoring programs. 3. Reagent storage and feed systems. The objective of this paper is to out- line the current direction being taken in each of these areas and to present case histories as examples of how theory has been applied in field situations to better improve operations. LABORATORY SCREENING TESTS Recent technical papers have explained the various generic chemical raw materials which are available in the marketplace. While the merits of each chemical component are open to debate, the processes used by most major reagent suppliers to evaluate products in the laboratory are fairly standard. Common techniques incorporate both static and dynamic conditions in the search for the most cost effective product. Static Test Perhaps the most common test procedure used is based upon NACE Standard Test Method 03-74, which is "a laboratory screening test to determine the ability of scale inhibitors to prevent precipitation of calcium sulfate and calcium carbonate from solution." The objective of this test is to measure the change in calcium ion concentration in a container of saturated stock solution prepared from calcium chloride and sodium carbonate which is heated in a water bath. After 12 hours at constant temperature (160°), the mother liquor is pipetted into a beaker and a titrated for gm/l of unprecipitated calcium ion. A simultaneous test is performed on stock solution with antiscalant added. The results are then charted to determine the most effective antiscalant (with respect to preventing precipitation of calcite). It should be noted that this procedure examines only the ability of a chemical additive to retain calcite in a saturated solution where thermal stress is applied. This is commonly referred to as sequestration or stabilization. It has been documented that products which act in this manner (i.e., inorganic and organic phosphates) are good scale inhibitors. However, low molecular weight anionic polymers function in a much different manner by distorting calcite crystal size, shape and charge density, thus preventing scale formation. Because of this different mode of operation, static tests may not prove conclusive where polymers and sequestrants are being compared. The simplicity of this test makes it easily adaptable for field use, although modifications are often made.

Preconcentration of Porgera ore results in high recoveries of gold into gravity and flotation concentrates. The bulk of the gold is contained in auriferous pyrite flotation concentrate and is not readily recoverable by direct cyanidation. Oxidation in autoclaves at high pressure and temperature produces a residue that contains the gold in recoverable form. Pilot plant treatment of the autoclave residue is described, through washing and jarosite decomposition stages, to cyanide leaching and recovery of gold and silver by carbon-in-pulp techniques. The concern associated with disposal of plant effluents are also addressed.

British Columbia's physiography - the mountains, valleys and watercourses - provides the basis for rich and varied plant and animal resources and for complex land uses. Mining alters the physical environment in a manner that may create a disproportionate impact on biological resources and land use systems. The object of environmental legislation is therefore largely the protection of the basic physical environment: land surface, water, and air. The pace of mineral exploration, placer mining, and underground and surface gold mining has recently quickened in British Columbia, testing the ability of both industry and regulatory agencies to respond to legislative requirements. Some parameters of mining activity have critical significance for environmental protection, for example: the area disturbed; the physical and chemical qualities of ore, waste and overburden; and the nature of materials handling. Acid mine drainage is a particular hazard. Provincial legislation that applies to mining includes the Mines Act, the Environment Management Act, the Waste Management Act, and the Water Act. Government of Canada legislation includes the Fisheries Act and the Metal Mining Liquid Effluent Regulations. Every new mine proposal in British Columbia is reviewed in the Mine Development Review Process, which receives its mandate from the Provincial Environment and Land Use Cabinet Committee. The proponent submits reports to the Mine Development Steering Committee in succeeding stages: Prospectus, Stage I (after which approval-in-principle may be granted by ELUC); and if necessary Stage 11. This article reviews some important characteristics of the known Egyptian phosphate deposits, such as mining conditions, transport criteria, quality of products affecting their export markets and utilisation in fertilizers industry. Special attention will be given to the newly discovered large deposit of Abu-Tartur with some billion tons of ore reserves. A big project is now under implementation on Abu-Tartur deposit where the long-wall method of underground mining will be applied and a flow sheet of beneficiation will be in operation including a particular feature nontraditional in phosphate processing: high-intensity magnetic separation to eliminate dolomite impurities. Comparison with some international phosphates will be tried in order to trace the situation of Egyptian phosphates in the world market.

The oxidation kinetics of pyrite and refractory gold concentrates in acidified ferrous sulfate solutions in the presence of oxygen-sulfur dioxide gas mixtures has been studied. The effect of temperature, pulp density and gas composition were determined. The optimum oxidation rate was obtained at 80°C and 2 percent sulfur dioxide in the gas mixture. The oxidation of the sulfide minerals is attributed to the presence of ferric ions, which are continuously regenerated by the gas mixture. The objective of this study is to find a new hydrometallurgical method to render sulfidic refractory gold ores amenable to cyanization.

In the context of this session on "Practical Placer Mining," a projection of the present into the future first assumes that there is a future for Placers. The second assumption is that there is the combination of adequate reserves and a willing, mining investment source to finance placers. This paper will point out the opportunities on both assumptions, illustrating my positive position on the future of gold placers. In order to focus this paper more effectively, I have chosen GOLD as the subject mineral. However, it is recognized that much of the technology for exploring and mining gold placers has been applied to other alluvial deposits; including platinum, diamond, tin, and various industrial minerals (which are often referred to as "placers" though this contradicts historical definitions). Over the past 10 years I have presented several papers on the general subject of placers, most of which are listed under References. These have included topics such as exploration, evaluation, small-scale gold placer mining and decision-making, mining and processing equipment designs, and dredge-mining operations. In an attempt to identify the more promising, undeveloped placer potentials in the world I have usually mentioned the USSR and China but qualified them as being either inaccessible, or, politically difficult to obtain. However, with recent developments in the USSR, the obstacles appear to be somewhat diminished.

A numerical method known as the discrete element method (DEM) is used to track the motion of individual balls in large-diameter ball mills. As a result, the en masse motion of the charge, force distribution, fall-height distribution, and energy distribution emerges from the simulation. Hence, it is possible to investigate the effect of mill diameter, liner profile and ball size distribution on the force regime created within the mill. Simulation results for 14-, 16- and 18-ft diameter mills are shown. The proportion of energy lost in high-intensity impacts and sliding ball motion is discussed. The DEM simulation technique opens the way for a closer examination of liner profiles on ball-charge motion.

Though most porphyry-molybdenum deposits lend themselves to various reserve estimating techniques, still there must exist the constant effort to not merely obtain an estimate but rather to obtain the best estimate. To answer the challenge of a complete ore reserve estimation, one must attack the problem with the purpose of obtaining the results closest to reality. What we wish to determine is simple: metric tons (short tons), grade, and kilograms (pounds) of molybdenum contained. In order to effectively accomplish this task, further consideration must be given to the ease of using the information obtained and its inherent reliability. The only known method for ore reserve estimation that supplies the needed results along with its distribution and a measure of confidence provided by sound mathematical backup is geostatistics. The following review is an example of geostatistical application of an ore reserve estimate at the AMAX Henderson mine demonstrating technique, viability, and usefulness of results.
