The Tromp distribution curve was used in an evaluation of gravity separators treating a synthetic ore made up of silica and marker minerals of various relative densities. The results pinpoint differences in the concentration of particles of different sizes, and indicate how the grade of a concentrate is likely to vary with particle size. An increase in the feed rate increased the efficiency of the 'waterless' spiral concentrator that was tested, but the multiport spiral concentrator tested was more efficient. Both spiral concentrators were found to be more efficient than the pinched sluice and the shaking table that were tested. The method was found to be a useful way of evaluating gravity concentrators, but, for ease of analysis, care must be taken in the choice of marker minerals.

Your article on page 202 of the August 1993 Journal refers. I was surprised to read that this grant was first introduced in 1984 as it was awarded to me (albeit under the auspices of The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London) as long ago as 1964, and I spent two very profitable months in Sweden at that time. Training in job-skills * A South African mine is leading the way in providing alternative job-skills to staff in a bid to upgrade services in local communities and create greater economic empowerment. In recent months, 85 employees of the Associated Manganese Mine (ASSMANG) in the Western Cape have learnt skills as diverse as candlemaking, shoemaking, concrete-product manufacturing, and brick production through a newly established community training centre.

Discussion of the above paper by A. SIFF The steely nature of the Iron Age objects mentioned in Dr Friede's paper point to two hypotheses. (1) The African iron workers were conversant with the art of direct steel manufacture. (2) They were less knowledgeable of the art of the production of carbonless iron. Wolhuter entitled, 'Utilisation of slags for the manufacture of cement.' After the presentation of the paper the President said: "Thank you, Professor Howat, for so ably introducing the paper prepared by yourself, Dr Jochens and Mr Wolhuter. Once again we are deeply indebted to you for bringing to our attention a new development in the metallurgical field, this time a technique for assessing the suitability of slags for the production of slag cement, and thereby providing a means of turning a waste material into a valuable asset. May we hope that this will lead to an end to unsightly slag dumps and, at the same time, to some conservation of our local limestone resources. The Centenary Luncheon for Past Presidents was held on Thursday, 24 March, 1994 at The President's Room at Gold Reef City, Johannesburg at 12:30. Herewith the proceedings that followed. Dr H. Scot-Russell It is with great pleasure that my fellow Office Bearers and I welcome you, our Past Presidents, to this luncheon to mark the centenary of the SAIMM. Today one hundred years ago, a group of professionals met and agreed to draw up the constitution and by-laws of a society later to be called an Institute. The Presidents of the Institute, of course, become its Past Presidents and help to guide its progress. A number of our sister institutes cannot wait for their Past Presidents to move of their councils, and cannot understand how we can give such free reign to ours! We believe it one of our strengths. The successful cooperation between our Past Presidents and ourselves is due to the personalities of these men. They attend meetings not to ensure that the status quo is maintained, but allow the current Office Bearers freedom to lead the Institute as they think fit. But they are always present to give sound advice, a helping hand, and support to the Institute in every way.

Recent publications have demonstrated the important role that can be played by a priori information of the grade levels, variability, and spatial patterns in adjacent or nearby areas in improving the quality of grade estimates for virgin or sparsely drilled areas. A research project was therefore conducted involving the collection and analysis of extensive sampling and borehole data from 7 reefs on some 30 Witwatersrand mines. This paper shows that the 'equivalent' log variance for the two-parameter lognormal model provides a good basis for the study and comparison of the levels and behaviour of relative variances. The trends of these against the corresponding log areas were found to form distinctive patterns, which are useful for these purposes. The patterns for the Basal, Vaal, Carbon Leader, and Main Reef Series form a reasonably close group, whereas those for the V.C.R.(particularly where the facies are mixed), B Reef, and Kimberley-Elsburg Reefs (particularly for narrow channel widths) do not always conform. The patterns shown by underground chip samples are also compared with those obtained from borehole cores. It is shown how this information can be used to improve the borehole valuation of new mines and of virgin areas in existing mines.

In recent years, a great deal has been written and spoken, both in our country and overseas, about the dangers posed to the environment and the ecology by mining operations. The object of this address is to put this problem, and it is a real problem, into reasonable perspective. Three types of high-strength cold-rolled steels are discussed. Two are currently being developed at Iscor: rephos phorized steel and niobium microalloyed steel. Heat treatment after cold rolling is carried out in batch annealing furnaces. A third type, dual-phase steel, which requires a continuous annealing treatment for economic production, is also described. The properties, strengthening mechanisms, and applications of these three steels are examined.

As such, it briefly describes the coal-mining methods, production, and mining education in Poland. A back-propagation model, which is typical of the models used in the science of artificial neural networks, was applied to the prediction of gossans from the southeast area of Habei Province in China. A success rate of 100 per cent was achieved. The results show that the neural-network approach is good, and that it can be used effectively in the prediction of multi metallic deposits.

The finite element method of stress analysis is nowadays widely used in the fields of mining, mechanical and civil engineering. This paper presents a short description of the three-dimensional method, in which the elements used are arbitrary hexahedrons. Two examples of the application of the method are presented, namely, calculation of the elastic stress distributions in a coal pillar and in an opencast mine.

Some aspects of the mechanical behaviour of chromium-containing dual-phase 3CR12 steel were investigated as a function of the temperature and strain rate. The yield stress was found to depend on both the temperature and the strain rate, with no substantial differences between the longitudinal and the transverse directions. The strain-rate sensitivity decreased with increasing temperature. The yield stress could be presented as a function of a temperature-strain-rate parameter. Impact test results showed substantial differences between the energy absorption of the transverse and longitudinal specimens above the ductile-brittle transition temperature. Changes in energy absorption with temperature were gradual for specimens in both orientations, and the transition from ductile to brittle behaviour occurred between 373 and 173 K. Strain rates ahead of the tip of notches with different geometries were calculated and measured experimentally.

An experimental feritic stainless steel with a chromium content of 40 per cent was welded by laser and electron beam (EB) welding processes. These techniques were found to be particularly suited to the welding of this alloy in that the impact toughness of the weld metal and heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the laser welds compared favourably with those of the parent aloy. When the EB process was used, the impact toughness of the weld metal was over 180 J/cm2. Grain growth in the HAZ was minimal for welding with these two processes. Corosion tests, conducted in a solution consisting of 20 per cent sulphuric acid and 100 p.p.m. of potassium thiocyanate, and In a highly corrosive industrial solution, indicated that the laser and EB welds were free of sensitization effects, thus confirming the metalographic results.

The issue of evaluating the economic impact of large mineral projects in developing countries was studied by the use of econometric models. The evaluating system is demonstrated by its application to an example from Namibia. Three-dimensional graphics are used to illustrate the procedures leading to an assessment of the economic effects of the mineral development. The analysis allows the assessment of the overall economic consequences of mineral developments where there is a need to incorporate in the evaluation issues that are broader in scope than the pure financial objectives. Sets of technical coefficients are exploited for the development of input-output models of the productive structure of an economy. The models are refined to incorporate country-specific behaviours. The increased flexibility of the enhanced semi-input-output model permits a more confident investigation of the economy wide effects associated with a new project in the mineral sector of a developing country. Synthetic measures of profitability at market and shadow prices are introduced, and the cost/benefit ratio is used to rank mineral projects according to their economic profitability. The cost is the capital mobilized for the development of the project and for increasing the productive capacity of the related satellite industries. The benefits are identified with the economy-wide increase in value added induced by the project. 80th costs and benefits are initially valued at market prices. Their ratio is likely to be an index of economic profitability superior to measures that concentrate exclusively on the benefit side of projects. To allow for market distortions, the concept of shadow prices is introduced, and accordingly project-related costs and benefits are re-evaluated. A new cost/benefit ratio at shadow prices is recalculated, which is more meaningful to the policy-maker than decision-making based on socio-economic issues.
