A banquet, attended by 467 members and visitors, was held at the Wanderers Club, Johannesburg, at 8 p.m. on Friday, 21st March, 1969, to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the Institute. Dit is my aangename plig om u voor te stel aan sy Edele, die Minister van Mynwese, van Beplanning, en van Gesondheid, Dr de Wet en sy gade, mev de Wet. Sy Edele Dr de Wet het geen bekendstelling nodig nie-alhoewel hy ons minister vir slegs die afgelope twee jaar is, het hy reeds talle funksies van ons Mynbedryf bygewoon en het baie vriende gemaak onder ons. Hy het homself baie bemind onder ons gemaak toe hy Wes-Driefontein onlangs besoek het om hulle ondersteuning en aanmoediging aan te bied in hulle uur van nood. The Honourable Dr de Wet was born in the Free State. He is a grandson of that very famous general Christiaan de Wet, who caused so much pain to the British forces and for so many months so successfully eluded them in the Transvaal and Orange Free State. He was educated at both the Pretoria and Witwatersrand Universities. He first practised medicine at Boksburg and then moved to Vanderbijlpark, so you see he has an early association with gold mining on the Witwatersrand, and in moving to the Vereeniging-Vanderbijlpark district he became closely involved in our coal mining and metallurgical industries. South Africa's first steel was poured from a l0-ton open hearth furnace belonging to the Union Steel Corporation in Vereeniging in 1913. Dr de Wet has been mayor of Vanderbijlpark and for several years has been their member of parliament. More recently, the Honourable Dr de Wet has filled with great honour that most important office of Ambassador for the Republic of South Africa in London. At present he wears two hats, in that he is Minister of Planning and of Health, but more important is his cloak, that of Minister of Mines, which I trust offers him the greatest comfort. To fulfill these three arduous tasks must demand of him a terrific devotion to duty, and in doing this he carries on that loyal tradition of service to his fatherland so evident in his grandfather. I am fully conscious of the responsibilities that devolve upon me as Minister of Mines in a country where mining makes so vital a contribution to economic progress and development and has, in fact, laid much of the foundation on which our present proud edifice is built. The achievements of the mining and metallurgical industry in its diversified activities arouse feelings equivalent to paternal pride, but let me speedily add that in considering any family relationship that may exist, the Minister of Mines should not be regarded in the role either of a fairy godmother or an indulgent father.

Techniques used to safely control the roof in UK coal mines for some 10 years have been applied to a South African coal mine. This new approach known in the UK as advanced rockbolting technology, is based on applying four fundamental principles: ?Understanding the roof failure mechanisms ?Using an effective roof support system ?Designing this support using measurement ?Monitoring the performance of the system. The paper summarizes the approach in detail and describes how it is being applied by Anglo Coal, giving results obtained to date. Investigations at a number of South African coal mines, including stress measurements at two Anglo Coal mines, have confirmed that the mode of roof failure (lateral shearing due to horizontal stress) is the same as in other coalfields worldwide, and aspects of current world best practice, including the use of advanced technology rockbolting, are therefore relevant in South Africa. The stress measurements indicated a high level of stress field anisotropy and further investigation of stress conditions in South African coal mines is recommended. The most effective bolting system to resist shear failure is one with high bond strength and stiffness. Short encapsulation pull testing of existing South African systems confirmed that they have low bond strength and stiffness. An improved rockbolt system with the required performance, and features allowing rapid installation and installation quality and performance audit, has been developed and is currently under full-scale trial. Design by measurement and routine monitoring procedures including the use of a rotary telltale device are also under trial. It is anticipated that South African coal mines will be able to obtain significant safety and productivity benefits from the application of this technology.

The simple act of taking a sample implies that someone will use the information contained in the analytical result to make a decision about a course of action. In the mining industry, the decisions may involve huge capital commitments for opening or closing a mine, or marginal tactical costs that involve deciding if a truckload of mineralized rock should be sent to the mill for processing, or the waste dump. Sampling is among the most fundamental activities in a mining operation, and this paper aims to examine some of the technical issues that can assist in ensuring that samples are representative and correct. Insights into the scale of variability require that we disaggregate sampling variance into its component parts and evaluate each one individually. The work of Pierre Gy in understanding the different sampling errors is the first step in establishing an optimal protocol. This must be followed by the appropriate measures to ensure the protocol is implemented such that minimal bias is introduced in the sampling process. Even with these insights the possibility exists for large unseen and hidden costs can accumulate in a mineral development because of sampling errors. These hidden costs arise due to misunderstanding of the principle factors that affect the size of sampling errors, such as the mass of the sample, the effects of splitting a sample to reduce the mass, and the influence of the nominal particle size. The handling of sample material without due regard to the sampling characteristics of the material being sampled is also a major source of sampling errors. The most significant problem is due to the influence of the so-called volume-variance effect. This effect is a consequence of the support effect and the information effect both of which relate to the difference in size at which samples are collected and mining blocks are extracted. The information effect is a function of the availability of data at the time that decisions are made about the destinations of mineralized rock, namely the mill or the waste dump. Implementation of appropriate sampling protocols in the mineral value chain remains a challenge throughout the industry. The growing understanding and deepening appreciation of sampling theory and methods means we stand on the threshold of a new era for implementing and understanding appropriate sampling procedures and protocols. In the interests of optimal development of the national patrimony it is suggested that standardization through the identification of structural problems and continuous improvement of mining processes be instituted at a national level.

Process mineralogy forms an integral part of geometallurgy, with ore body characterisation being but one piece of the puzzle in optimising value derived from ore. This value is not only financial, but importantly speaks to sustainability from environmental and social standpoints. The reactive approach of traditional process mineralogy is increasingly being replaced by predictive methods in the geometallurgical sphere, for which mineralogical information must be timeously acquired on judiciously selected sample sets to understand ore variability and its impact on orebody processing. Such processes are not only metallurgical, but must incorporate mining and waste management protocols. Dwindling resources like water and energy also demand innovative approaches for lowering consumption and/or promoting recycling along the value chain. Addressing such challenges relies on appropriate characterisation of ore behaviour under different process regimes. Coupled with this, emerging characterisation tools are increasingly applied to understand the mineralogy of unconventionallypresented and difficult-to-process ores to meet societal and technology demands. Such tools are often accompanied by the generation of large, computationally intensive datasets, for which data management and storage are key requirements, particularly when deciphering temporal trends in ore and process variability. This paper will elaborate on these themes with examples that highlight the importance of process mineralogy throughout the minerals value chain. Laboratory test-work has established that two classes of redox catalysts based on anthraquinone and bipyridinium derivatives are effective in accelerating the rate of removal of metallic iron from reduced ilmenite (RI) in the aeration step of the Becher process. Two water-soluble anthraquinone derivatives are efficient: 9,10-anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonicacid, disodium salt (catalyst AQ-2,6) and 9,10-anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid, monosodium salt(catalyst AQ-2). When 0.2 per cent w/v of either was added during aeration the rate of metalliciron removal was accelerated by two to three times. Furthermore, the addition of either compound resulted in magnetite (Fe3O4), the iron oxide phase preferred in commercial practice, being formed. However, both AQ-2,6 and AQ-2 were rapidly lost from solution during aeration although their catalytic activities persisted even when their concentrations in solution were low(<0.05 per cent w/v). The negatively charged anthraquinones were lost from solution most probably by adsorption onto the magnetite that has a net positive charge at the pH values encountered during aeration. To address this problem, the catalytic activities of positively charged bipryridinium derivatives were tested. Two water-soluble bipyridinium compounds, paraquat (1,1’-dimethyl-4,4’-bipyridinium dichloride) and diquat (6,7 dihydrodipyrido [1,2-a:2’,1’-c] pyrazinediiumdibromide), were found to significantly accelerate the rate of removal of metallic iron from reduced ilmenite, and both gave magnetite as the oxide product in the laboratory tests. Moreover, recycle tests showed they were not lost from solution as quickly as were the anthraquinone derivatives. Results in larger scale plant laboratory reactors also showed a significant increase in aerationrates when diquat was added and magnetite was again the oxide formed. However, the oxygensupply to the reactors was insufficient to achieve the maximum effect of the catalysts on theaeration rates. The limited supply of oxygen in a full scale aerator may prevent the application ofthe catalysts in a commercial Becher operation. Good operation of Soderberg electrodes is dependent upon high quality electrode paste coupled with better electrode management procedures. Without having a good electrode operation, it is not possible to obtain the best outcome from the furnace. In other words that is a good way to say how important the proper electrode operation is. Good electrode performance depends on the slipping rate and current levels, which decides the shape of the baking curve at the level of just below the contact clamps. Negative curvature of baking zone in the central part is considered dangerous because shrinkage takes place outwardly creating abnormal stresses in the electrode. Soft breakages occur when the baking zone comes below the clamps and the casing cannot take the current. This paper deals with various factors affecting baking characteristics leading to soft breakages and also presents case studies in a closed 48MVA furnace with smelting for charge chrome. In case studies in a closed furnace, it has happened that the energy for baking at the low current operation before breakage has been lower than the actual slipping has demanded. At low current there should not be problem, but a problem can occur when the current for some period is raised above the current carrying capacity of the casing. So data for electrode operation in actual period was studied and presented in this paper.

"The risk of spontaneous combustion is well known in the South African coal mining industry. In the coming years it is very possible that the incidence of spontaneous combustion will increase from current levels, due to factors such as an increased rate of mining, re-working of previously mined seams, more stooping and total extraction for underground mines, and higher stripping ratios for surface mines, leading to more spoils. It is also fairly certain that coal mining will face tougher environmental emissions legislation in the near future. To determine the areas where the risks of spontaneous combustion are high, it is necessary to improve on our current laboratory procedures for testing and evaluating coal samples, combining the results with site and field data, and if necessary revising the laboratory rating system to refine our understanding of South African conditions.Currently, laboratory tests are conducted in order to determine both the Wits-EHAC index and the crossing-point temperature which, when combined, give an indication of the spontaneous combustion propensities of the coal samples. This procedure has enabled the establishment of a database of results to review and evaluate South African coal seams. Using this database, the high-risk areas in terms of spontaneous combustion are identified. Tests have been undertaken for five consecutive years, between 2008 and 2012. In total, 119 coal samples from different coal seams and production coalfields have been analysed and classified through a series of laboratory tests. A comprehensive database of these results is available, and is continually being updated as new test results are added. This database will continue to expand, and to provide the basis for an improved risk evaluation methodology for spontaneous combustion"

Mineral resource management (MRM) practice has developed in South Africa over the course of the last ten years, with the purpose of integrating previously isolated technical functions into a value chain aligned, process organization, responsible for mine planning and optimization. The implementation of MRM within various companies has met with varying degrees of success, often resulting in incremental improvements in the planning process and, conversely, often becoming the scapegoat for poor delivery on plans and projects. The reason for this has been, amongst others, a lack of a suitable metric to define the success rate of MRM in the business at hand, in terms of its contribution to the bottom line. This paper is the result of extensive research by the author into this subject, which has resulted in the conclusion that economic value added is an appropriate measure that will lead to real optimization and value creation in mining companies, if applied within a new, holistic model

The current methodology to design stope support systems in South African gold and platinum mines is based upon the tributary area concept. The discontinuous nature of the hangingwall rock is not adequately addressed, and mechanisms leading to rock mass failures between adjacent support units are poorly understood. The work reported here aims to formulate a basis for quantifying support mechanisms and gain insights into the influence of rock discontinuities on stable hangingwall spans. Numerical models are used to qualitatively investigate the stress transfer from the support units to the discontinuous hangingwall. Stable hangingwall spans are quantified by considering two failure mechanisms, namely (i) beam buckling, and (ii) shear failure due to slip at the abutments. The output of the proposed design methodology is appropriate site specific support spacing, based on discontinuity spacing and orientation. The method is particularly suited to mines at intermediate and great depth, where typically the hangingwall is highly discontinuous due to face parallel mining induced fractures. Results of parametric studies show that with increasing in situ compressive hangingwall stress, beam thickness and friction angle, hangingwall stability is increased, leading to wider stable hangingwall spans between adjacent support units.

Behaviour studies of metal dusting processes and associated filamentous carbon formation were undertaken on Alloys 600, 601, and 800 using a simulated metal dusting environment of 25C0-70H2-5H20 (vol.%) at 650°C. These samples were studied visually and by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (TEM-EDX) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). Visual examination and SEM surface observation showed that Alloy 800 suffered metal dusting attack at an early exposure reaction period. The coke deposit amounts increased significantly with reaction time from 168 hours to 336 hours in Alloys 600, 601, and 800. Alloy 800 showed pitting after 168 hours&apos; exposure, and the degree of pitting increased after 336 hours. XRD showed all these alloys had a common austenitic phase, with Alloy 800 also having ferritic metal particles. Alloy 800 after 168 hours&apos; exposure had a complex phase mixture on the surface, consisting of ferritic Fe and austenitic FeNi phases. For coke deposit, there were also Fe304, Fe3C and graphitic carbon. The existence of Fe, Ni, and Cr metal particles, and also graphitic carbon in coke deposits, was confirmed by EDX analyses.

One of the main problems related to mining investment decisions is the use of accurate prediction models. Metallurgical recovery is a major source of variability, and in this regard, the Chuquicamata processing plant recovery was modelled as a function of geomining-metallurgical data and ore characteristics obtained from a historical database. In particular, the dataset gathered contains information related to feed grades, ore hardness, particle size, mineralogy, pH, and flotation reagents. A systemic approach was applied to fit a multivariate regression model representing the copper recovery in the plant. The systemic approach consists of an initial projection of the characteristic grinding product size (P80), based upon energy consumption at the particle size reduction step, followed by a flotation recovery model. The model allows for an improvement in the investment decision process by predicting performance and risk. The final geometallurgical model uses eight operational variables and is a significant improvement over conventional prediction models. A validation was performed using a recent data-set, and this showed a high correlation coefficient with a low mean absolute error, which reveals that the geometallurgical model is able to predict, with acceptable accuracy, the actual copper recovery in the plant.

Dilution of ore has a major impact on economics of a mine. The magnitude of dilution depends on mining method, stope dimensions, reef and host rock quality, wall support and drilling accuracy. The main contributing factor is the presence of very weak graphitic shear band of varying thickness in and around the reef. The reef, at Obuasi, is generally steeply dipping and open stoping is the predominant mining method. The stability of the stope walls limits the stope dimensions. Various options for allowing larger stopes for higher productivity and limiting dilution are analysed. The most economic way is to reinforce the walls with systematic cablebolt supports. This option does not only add the support cost but also requires additional cost of access development. These conflicting requirements are continually being optimised at the mine for the economics of dilution control. La dilution du minerai à un impact majeure sur l’économie d’une mine. La quantité de matériel diluant le minerai dépend de la méthode d’extraction, de la dimension des chantiers d’abattage, de la qualité du filon et de la roche mère, du support des épontes et de la précision du forage de production. Le facteur principal qui contribue à la dilution est la présence d’étroites zones cisaillées qui contiennent du graphite ayant différentes épaisseurs à l’intérieur et autour du filon. Le filon, à Obuasi, est généralement à fort pendage et la méthode d’abattage principale est par chantier long-trous. La stabilité des épontes est le facteur qui détermine la dimension des chantiers d’abattage. Differentes options ont été analysées de façon à permettre de plus larges chantiers de manière à augmenter la productivité tout en limitant la dilution. Le moyen le plus économique est de renforcer les épontes avec des cables d’acier cimentés forés de façon systématiques. Cette option n’augmente pas seulement les coûts de support mais aussi les coûts de développement. Ces besoins contradictoires sont continuellement revisés à l’opération afin d’optimiser l’économique par le contrôle de la dilution. Die ökonomischste Weise soll die Wände mit systematischen Kableankerbolzenunterstützungen verstärken. Diese Wahl addiert nicht nur die Kosten der Unterstützung aber erfordert auch zusätzliche Kosten fuer Zugangsentwicklung. Diese kontroversen Anforderungen werden fortwährend an der Grube analysiert um die Verdünnungkontrolle zu optimieren.

"The challenges facing the mining industry include complex ores and declining grades, together with increasing capital costs and environmental regulations. In addition, future commodity price uncertainty makes investment decisions difficult. Shorter plant lifecycles mean that new projects need shorter payback and increased net present value. With regard to solvent extraction, the introduction of an innovative modular plant design will help to address these issues. The first such modular offering is Outotec’s VSF®X modular solvent-extraction plant that uses prefabricated and transportable modules. Reuse and recyclability have underpinned the design concept. The greatest advantage of the VSF®X modular solvent-extraction plant is its relocation possibility. Additionally, it is suitable for various metals and plant capacity is adjustable through a scalable modular structure. After a dedicated plant lifecycle, the plant can be dismantled and relocated to a new site. This reuse ability offers major benefits for short-term plants, making them more feasible due to higher residual value. A net present value analysis is made for two examples, a conventional plant with no relocation possibility and a modular movable plant with extended plant life cycle, in order to evaluate the feasibility of modular plants. Results indicate that modular plant design could offer an economical solution with the additional advantage of improved overall sustainability through its life cycle. A201 aluminium alloy is a high strength casting alloy with a nominal composition of Al-4.6Cu-0.3Mg-0.6Ag. It is strengthened by the O(Al2Cu) phase and the ??(Al2Cu) phase during heat treatment. Further strengthening of this alloy system can be obtained through the addition of transition elements, but care must be taken as other elements might have adverse effects on the mechanical properties. The objective of this study is to determine the influence of Mn on the tensile properties of rheo-processed Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy A201. ThermoCalc software was used to predict the different phases that can be expected in the alloys, and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used to investigate the actual phases that formed. The influence of these phases on tensile properties is quantified. SEM and ThermoCalc revealed that there is an increased amount of the Al20Cu2Mn3 with increasing Mn. The tensile properties showed that high amounts of Mn do have adverse effects on the tensile properties of alloy A201, especially the ductility. After the explosion at Middelbult Colliery, South Africa in May1993, which claimed 53 lives, the South African Coal Mining Industry and the Safety In Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) united forces to establish a surface facility to develop and test on-board flame suppression systems for continuous miners and roadheaders. The first test that was conducted in this newly constructed test tunnel at the Kloppersbos Research Facility, CSIR was in July 1995.Since then 70 tests have been conducted using the facility and have focused on on-board active ignition suppression systems for continuous miners (CM) and road heading (RH) machines to enhance the safety of South African mine workers in collieries. These suppression systems are mounted on the CM or RH machine and detect the occurrence of an ignition by means of light-sensitive sensors. The electronic signal from the sensor triggers the suppression system, creating a flame-suppression curtain, containing and extinguishing the flame in the immediate vicinity of the ignition. Forty-three tests have been conducted with an active on-board suppression system present inside the test tunnel. Since flame propagation speed is an extremely important parameter, the CSIR-Miningtek made the results of the test programme available for re-analysis. Flame speed depended on whether a machine was present in the heading or not, the geometry of the heading and the volume and composition of the explosive mixture of gas. Flame speeds of up to 190 m/s were recorded. However, the active suppression systems were almost always successful in containing flame propagation.

The key aspects of process metallurgy that distinguish platinum group metal (PGM) concentrate smelting from that of other base metal sulphide concentrates are presented. These differences include considerably higher input chrome and magnesia contents that directly raise the slag liquidus temperature and have the potential to increase accumulations of refractory spinels. Most importantly, the higher processing temperature required for PGM smelting and the resulting very high matte superheat lead to considerably more onerous smelting conditions than those typical of other smelting operations. This has presented challenges to furnace design and integrity, especially when coupled with the progressive intensification of smelting, involving doubling, and then redoubling, of furnace power inputs over the past 20 years. These power increases have been enabled by increasingly more advanced furnace cooling and structural technologies. Key technologies include strong constant-force spring-loaded bindings acting in three dimensions to minimize infiltration of superheated matte into brick joints, and robust well-cooled tapholes for reliably tapping the superheated matte. The result has been substantially improved productivity, and reduced smelting capital cost outlay per unit of production. A significant challenge, which was not anticipated, presented itself in the form of insidious corrosion of the furnace lining, and especially high-intensity copper cooling elements. Investigation of corrosion in related industries eventually identified chloride-accelerated sulphidation&apos;, and this term has been retained as it generically describes the most pertinent aspects of the accelerated low-temperature wear of copper coolers observed in PGM smelting. In addition to discussing the corrosion mechanism, this paper describes a number of solutions that were developed jointly by Anglo American Platinum and Hatch to address the copper corrosion problem. First, new monitoring technologies allowed furnaces to be operated more safely for a longer period of time. Second, a system for replacing corroded coolers from outside the furnace during a fast &apos;hot&apos; shutdown minimized the impact on furnace operating factor and hearth life. Finally, a corrosion-resistant graphite-protected cooler design significantly improved furnace campaign life, and heralds a more lasting solution to cooler corrosion in PGM furnaces.

As a result of the increased depth of mining in the South African gold mining industry mining induced seismicity is a severe problem. One of the strategies within the industry to contain the problem is to incorporate a system of regularly spaced stabilising pillars into mine layouts. At the Driefontein Gold Mine a system of closely spaced dip pillars is used to contain seismic energy emissions. Comparisons of seismic data for several mining clusters initially indicated a possible measure of success in the containment and occurrence of larger events. A detailed analysis of data over a 5-year period since the start of mining however, has revealed a delayed seismic response to the increasing strike spans. Significant changes marked by an increase in certain seismic variables have been observed at mining spans of between 100 to 120 meters and could be of significance to pillar spacing in the design of deep level mining layouts. La sismicité occasionnée par l’exploitation minière est un problème grave dans les mines profondes de l’industrie minière aurifère en Afrique du Sud. Une des stratégies utilisées dans l’industrie a été de maîtriser le problème en incorporant un système de piliers de stabilisation régulièrement espacés dans la disposition des mines. A la Driefontein Gold Mine, un système de piliers de pendage proches les uns des autres est utilisé pour contenir les émissions d’énergie sismique. Au début, des comparaisons de donnés sismiques pour plusieurs groupes d’extraction ont indiqué un succès possible dans la limitation et l’occurrence d’évènements sismiques. Cependant, une analyse détaillée des données sur une période de 5 années a révélé un délai entre la progression de l’extraction et une réponse sismique accrue. Des changements considérables dans les variables sismiques ont été observés dans des intervalles d’extraction entre 100 et 120 mètres, ce qui pourrait être significatif pour l’espacement des piliers dans la conception de la disposition des mines de fond. Resultierend aus den zunehmenden Tiefen des Bergbaus in der südafrikanischer Goldbergbauindustrie stellt sich die vom Bergbau hervorgerufene Seismizität als bedrohliches Problem dar. Es war eine der Strategien innerhalb der Industrie, das Problem dadurch einzudämmen, daß regelmäßig plazierte Stabilisierungspfeiler in den Bergbaulayouts inkorporiert wurden. In der Driefontein Gold Mine wird ein System von knapp aneinandergesetzten im Abfallbereich befindliche Pfeiler benutzt, um seismische Energieemissionen einzudämmen. Vergleiche der seismischen Daten für mehrere Bergbaugruppen zeigten anfangs ein mögliches Maß von Erfolg in der Eindämmung und im Auftreten von größeren Fällen an. Eine ausführliche Analyse von Daten über einen 5jährigen Zeitraum hat jedoch ergeben, daß eine Verzögerung zwischen der Progression des Bergbaus und einer erhöhten seismischen Reaktion besteht. Bedeutende Änderungen in den seismischen Variablen wurden an Bergbauspannen von 100 bis 120 Metern beobachtet und könnten für Abstandsbemessung von Pfeilern im Design des Tiefbergbaulayouts von Bedeutung sein.

Since the commissioning of the Tati Hydrometallurgical Demonstration Plant (HDP), which produces Ni and Cu cathodes as well as Co salt from sulphide concentrate employing Activox® technology for leaching, no kinetic data has been generated from the plant under normal operating conditions, from start-up to steady state. Therefore, this study seeks to determine the rate of reactions in the leaching circuit with a view to obtaining kinetic data for the system under the current operating conditions. Within the five-compartment autoclave operating at temperatures of 105°C to 110°C and 1100 kPa pressure, the extraction of Ni, Cu, and Co ions into solution is achieved through the oxidation of the sulphide concentrate using approximately 50 kg H2SO4 per ton, 10 kg NaCl per ton, and 1.21 kg O2 per kilogram of S2-. The autoclave reactions showed complex kinetics, with the reactions proceeding via some intermediate(s) before the formation of products. The results suggest that the reactions were dependent on the size of the metal ion of interest and the concentrations of the metal ions in the Tati concentrate as well as in chloride leaching. The order of the leaching rate constants was Fe2+ > Cu2+ > Ni2+ > Co2+ in all the compartments studied. The rates of leaching were also found to decrease as the concentrate moves from compartment 1 to compartment 4. For compartments 1 to 3, leaching was observed to be preceded by dilution of the repulp liquor (copper raffinate). The leaching rate for compartment 5 was slightly lower than that of compartment 1 but higher than the rates of compartments 2, 3, and 4 for all the metals studied. ABSTRACT – This paper investigates the possibility of interpreting the shear band evolution in hard soils and soft rocks as the result of shear propagation from pre-existing natural defects. Thesis done through the application of the principles of Fracture Mechanics, a Slip-Weakening Model(SWM) being used to simulate the non-linear zone at the tips of the discontinuity. Experimental observations have been carried out on prismatic samples of Beaucaire marl through biaxial compression tests in plane strain conditions. A numerical simulation confirms the validity of the proposed approach. RÉSUMÉ – Cet article présente la possibilité d’interpréter l’évolution des bandes de cisaillement dans les roches tendres et les sols raides comme le résultat de la propagation pour cisaillement à partir d’un défaut préexistant. Le Slip-Weakening Model (SWM) a été employé pour modéliser la zone non linéaire a l’extrémité d’une discontinuité. Nous présentons des observations expérimentaux obtenues à travers des essais de compression en déformation plane sur des échantillons prismatiques de marne. La simulation numérique d’un essai confirme la validité de la méthode proposée. KURZFASSUNG – Die vorliegende Arbeit versucht die Ausbreitung von Scherzonen in(bindigen) Böden und im Lockergestein anhand der Entwicklung von Scherrissen ausgehend vonexistierenden Schwachstellen zu erklären. Die Umsetzung erfolgte mit Hilfe der Bruchmechanik,für die Modellierung der nichtlinearen Zone an den Rissenden wurde ein Slip-Weakening-Modell(SWM) eingesetzt. Es wurden zweiaxiale Druckversuche an prismatischen Probekörpern vonBeaucaire Mergel unter der Bedingung eines ebenen Verzerrungszustandes durchgeführt. Dienumerische Untersuchungen bestätigten die Annahmen der untersuchten Theorie.

The Eighteenth International Symposium on the Appli¬cation of Computers and Mathematics in the Mineral Industries was held in London from 26th to 30th March, 1984. The Symposium was organized by the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy under the leadership of Mr M.J. Cahalan, Chairman of the Organizing Committee. The venue chosen was the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College of Science and Technology, in South Kensington. Some 300 delegates from all parts of the world attended, which included a delegation from South Africa that numbered about 20 persons. This extremely successful series of international meet¬ings was begun in 1961 in Tucson, Arizona, and has grown in strength and importance over the years. The arrange¬ment of the symposia is regulated by the International Council for APCOM under the Chairmanship of Professor R.V. Ramani (U.S.A.), the other current members being Professor J. Elbrond (Canada), Dr Thys B. Johnson (U.S.A.), Professor Young C. Kim (U.S.A.), Professor D.G. Krige (R.S.A.), Professor A.J. Lynch (Australia), Professor C.T. Shaw (U.K.), Dr A. Weiss (U.S.A.), and Professor F.L. Wilke (F.R.G.). There is no doubt that the enthusiasm and dedication of this small group of people and the excellent working relationship that exists between them are responsible for the continued success of APCOM meetings.
