The ability of soils to retain and hold cations is called the cation exchange capacity (CEC). Adsorbed cations, however, can be replaced by other cations through the process of cation exchange. Heavy mineral deposits contain a significant portion of slimes including the very fine clay minerals. In most circuits the slimes fraction hampers efficiency and has to be removed during early stages of the process. Being a nonvaluable process stream, the processing of the slimes is a costly exercise. In thickening applications it might be possible to manipulate the ability of clay minerals to retain and hold positively charged cations in order to optimize flocculation and therefore reduce flocculation costs. The CEC value of the slimes could be a measure of this possibility. To investigate this hypothesis, different slimes samples were characterized for size, chemical composition and clay minerals present. The CEC value of each sample was determined and explained in terms of the mineral phases present. Settling tests were conducted and an attempt was made to explain the CEC characteristics of the clay minerals in terms of settling rate. The scope of this investigation was to test the hypothesis and should not be seen as an in-depth study of the subject matter. A greater number of samples and detailed analyses to identify and quantify minerals and phases present would be required to investigate further the relationships between clay minerals in the deposit, CEC and settling rates. Location and geological setting Exxaro KZN Sands is mining a heavy minerals deposit at Hillendale mine located at Richards Bay, South Africa. The orebody consist of a dune some 8 km inland from the coast to the north of eSikhawini. A geological synopsis undertaken by Botha1 concluded that the Hillendale mining area represents a coastal dune sequence that accumulated north of the Tugela River. The northward movement of sediment by long shore drift currents result in a high sand budget on the beaches north of the river youth and is the dominant contributing factor to the accretion of the coastline and development of parallel dune systems along the coastal zone in this area. Beach swash zone processes and enrichment of the fine sand fraction occurs during wind transport off the beach by ascending parabolic dunes that form the coastal barrier dunes. This process results in heavy mineral concentration on the windward dune face and localized enrichment parallel to the dune forms. The aeolian sedimentary facies processes result in the primary concentration of higher grades in the upper silt-enriched reddish brown horizons of the profile. The synopsis by Botha1 further showed that an additional component of heavy mineral concentration can be ascribed to the post-depositional relative enrichment of heavy minerals due to weathering. Therefore, it is likely that the Hillendale orebody protolith was pedogenically weathered to form the homogeneous, silt-enriched, clayey reddish brown to dark red, palaeosol profile that grades downwards into yellowish brown, less clay-enriched sand. Slimes characterization Samples The Hillendale orebody was divided into geochemically discretized zones based on the concentration of ilmenite and other specific minerals and/or phases. Six composite samples were made up from exploration samples taken from Zone 9, Zone 11 and Zone 12. The red and orange horizons within these composite samples were separated and test samples were prepared to conduct test work and analyses. The test samples were submitted for preparation and analysis to characterize the slimes properties. Each test sample was deslimed at 45 µm representing the slimes fraction (-45 µm) and dried at 40°C. The -45 µm slimes samples were then split to conduct size analysis, chemical analysis, XRD and to determine the CEC. Size analysis The size distribution of the composite samples is shown in Table I. The size analysis shows that there is a difference in size distribution between the orange and red horizons of each zone. The orange horizons contain less 850 µ material as well as less slimes (-45 µm). The red horizons contain yore slimes (-45 µm). The size distribution of the slimes fraction (-45 µm) was determined using Malvern size analysis. The cumulative particle size distribution of the slimes is shown in Figure 1. The red horizons of the different zones show similar size distributions. The orange horizons show some differences. However, there is a difference in size distributions between the red and orange horizons.

FINANCE The annual accounts, which follow this report, indicate that income again exceeded expenditure by a margin of R21 410 (last year R28 524). This year's income of R71 184 showed a further increase compared with last year's figure of R55 025. Costs, however, also in¬creased, and it is calculated that, excluding non-recurrent costs, the cost of running the Institute in¬creased by R6 654 from R25 501 to R33 155 for the current year. The main increases were involved in secretarial fees, stationery and print¬ing, and in publication of the Journal. All indications are that costs will continue to rise, and we have been advised that the A.S. & T.S. will be increasing their secretarial fees by 25 per cent in the year ahead to meet their rising costs. This year's surplus was derived entirely from the revenue from sales of publications (R13 644) and a surplus from the 1974 Winter School (RIO 654). There can be no certainty that revenue from these sources can be repeated each year. Our funds are in a satisfactory position because of these worth¬while activities, but the administrat¬ion of the Institute should not de¬pend on them. Council will accord¬ingly have to give consideration in the year ahead to an upward adjust¬ment of subscriptions to meet rising costs.

You will appreciate that, in the eighty odd years since the Institute was founded, the diversity of subjects has been very great. In almost all cases it is quite natural that the speaker should have chosen a topic of special interest to him and one in which he was particularly knowledgeable.

This paper summarizes work carried out on the treatment of fine coal, nominally classified as minus 0,5 mm (wedge-wire screen), which is removed from the raw coal prior to the treatment of the plus 0,5 mm sizes. The minus 0,5 mm coal divides, for treatment purposes, into fines, nominally between 500 and 150 !tm, and ultrafines, nominally minus 150 !tm. Studies on processes for the treatment of minus 0,5 mm coal are discussed, and the lower size limit beneficiated is indicated for each process. The installation and operational results from a pilot froth-flotation plant treating minus 150!tm coal are described.

Research into the ferrous metallurgy of Rhodesian Iron Age societies M. D. PRENDERGAST (Visitor) Iron-working was a widespread economic activity in Iron Age Rhodesia, and merits historical and metallurgical investigation. However, the research done so far has been incidental and poorly disseminated. This paper reviews the available evidence and the ways in which it can be interpreted by archaeologists and historical metallurgists. High-temperature phase relations in the Pb-PbS system were established by the quenching of samples equilibrated in evacuated and sealed silica capsules. The liquid-miscibility gap seen in some previously published phase diagrams was not observed. The thermodynamic activities of PbS in liquid solutions of this system were derived at 1473 K from the isopiestic equilibration of samples belonging to this solution series with Cu2S-PbS melts of known PbS activities. The behaviour of Pb-PbS melts was found to be compatible with a subregular solution model. This model also made it possible to obtain an analytical liquidus for PbS that was in excelent agreement with the experimental determination.

Some aspects of the deformation behaviour and temperature rise during instantaneous compression loading of high purity aluminium By H. J. E. HAMEL The influence of deformation speed on the deformation behaviour of high purity aluminium was investigated. By varying the initial height-to-diameter ratio a considerable influence on the deformation behaviour could be noticed. Lubrication of the specimen end faces was found to have an influence on the flow behaviour and on the roughness of the specimen interface at pressing platens. The results of temperature measurements during deformation agree with work-hardening behaviour of the specimens. Flow curves calculated with the measured temperature rises do not agree with results obtained at lower strains by other workers. The possible reasons are discussed.

SYNOPSIS The effects of concurrent recovery, prior creep deformation and concurrent high temperature fatigue on the coarsening of some carbides in steels have been studied. It was found that concurrent recovery enhances the coarsening rate by orders of magnitude and prior creep deformation causes an enhancement of about two times. Finally, concurrent fatigue causes an initial greatly enhanced coarsening rate but after prolonged cycling dissolution of the carbides occurs.

On many important occasions we, in this Institute, have been privileged to have him address us on subjects which were always of great importance and relevance to the developments in this country. PAPERS FOR PRESENTATION The President: (i) "Mr Lee, may I call on you to deliver your paper entitled 'A new bubble pick-up technique as a rapid flotation test method'." After the presentation of the paper the President said: "The paper which Mr Lee introduced this afternoon was a short one but was nonetheless important in that it described a new tool for use in flotation test work. Those of us who have experienced the frustration of trying to solve flotation problems by trial and error methods know what this means. I well remember 25 years ago at T.G.M.E. trying to improve the recovery from the flotation plant there by trying various combinations of reagents and then having to wait a couple of days for the assay office to give results. Even then, on the small scale laboratory tests which had to precede full scale tests one could never be sure that the results obtained were reproducible on the full scale. Here it seems we have a relatively simple apparatus which can measure instantly the effectiveness of various reagents under different concentrations and pH values, etc. It is most important, I believe, that developments of this kind be reported in our journal for the benefit of all involved in such work, not only so that we know about it but also in order to provoke constructive discussion which might lead to further developments. Mining of sand in South Africa is rapidly growing to sustain an increasing demand for sand for building purposes. Although mining of sand is regulated by environmental legislation, such as the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 19981, previous bad mining practices have left areas of land degraded and vulnerable to erosion. This study was conducted in the Seringveld Conservancy, where mining of sand has left the landscape with a degraded and unsightly appearance, and where little rehabilitation of the original vegetation has taken place. The aim of the study was to develop rehabilitation techniques for the degraded mined soils on two sand mines, Boekenhout Sand and Krokodil Sand, and to develop an overall strategy of revegetation by regenerating key plant species. Techniques for regenerating indigenous tree species cover, using modified mined sludge if topsoil is not available, were used to develop a practical and cost-effective strategy to be used in revegetation. A comparative trial was used to cultivate indigenous tree species in different soil mixtures. The study is important as it provides new information on the rehabilitation and revegetation of sand mined areas in the Seringveld Conservancy. This study will determine if alternatives could be used to replace topsoil on mined areas where none is available. The study is needed to determine whether revegetation of the mined areas would be possible using indigenous plant species that are difficult to grow. The overall results indicate that replacing topsoil was successful for various modified soil mixtures that could sustain the growth of indigenous vegetation on the sand mines. Different indigenous tree species require different modified soil mixtures for successful propagation. A revegetation strategy was developed to complement and enable the rehabilitation of the mined areas in the Seringveld Conservancy. Sulphuric acid plants now and then see unexpected increases in SO2 emissions. Our experience is that it is not always easy for the acid plants to pin point the exact reason for the SO2 increase. Sometimes a catalyst bed is sacrificed even though reliable emperature readings and gas analyses could have verified satisfactory activity, hence the leaking heat exchanger is never discovered and after the shutdown the SO2 emissions are still too high. This paper will look into some basic catalyst management tools: Good record keeping is a necessity for collection of representative catalyst samples, reliable operating data is an inevitable starting point for all analysis and trending of operating data is a must for plant optimisation and troubleshooting. In addition these catalyst management tools will give a continuous updated knowledge of the catalyst status in each bed providing the basis for a more effective replacement strategy. The most typical reasons for increasing SO2 emissions will be presented together with easy guidelines for cross-checking of operating data, temperature optimisation and good record keeping.

SYNOPSIS This paper is based on a thesis dealing with the problem of basing the current rate at which money is collected from mine owners to pay compensation for pneumoconiosis in the future, on the current dust hazard on mines. The certification of pneumoconiotics and the incidence of pneumoconiosis are discussed against the background of existing legal provision for collecting funds for compensation. The various pneumoconiosis indices are considered. In the data analyzed, the only pneumoconiosis index common to a number of classes of mines is the time it takes to develop pneumoconiosis. Sets of dust indices and pneumoconiosis indices are computed. Expressions are derived for the time it takes to develop pneumoconiosis as a function of the dust hazard, and for the collection of funds as a function of the time available for collection. From these two expressions follows an expression for the rate of collecting funds as a function of the dust hazard.

In Chapter 1 we mentioned that up to three components are considered to represent the variability of regionalized variables : a deterministic component, a correlated component, and a random component. In Chapter 2 we considered some of the models based on the assumption of randomly distributed values: the random component was assumed to be the only one present. In Chapters 3 to 11, more general but also more complex models were described, based on the assumption that the values were correlated with the possible presence of random noise. In this chapter we introduce a model used to analyse non- stationary data, for which a deterministic component (or drift) must be assumed. This model will be used for estimation purposes, and the corresponding optimal linear estimation procedure is known as universal kriging. The theory of universal kriging is much more complex than the theory of kriging. Fortunately, in the majority of mine valuation problems the drift can be ignored and the simpler form of kriging can be used.

The paper serves to show the importance of both a geological model and geostatistical model that support one another in mineral resource evaluation. It highlights the advantage of reference models for the geometry, the geological, statistical and geostatistical models of various orebody types and introduces a method for quantifying the combined uncertainty in these models. The example presented reveals how the above levels of information can be applied to add value to a resource evaluation process. It is a generic example in that it is the technique of combining uncertainty in the geological model (boundaries) as well as the grade model to assess the overall risk in the estimation of the resource. Data from the coal industry is used to illustrate the techniques. The geological uncertainty is considered via categorical simulations and these are combined with simulations of the variables (grades, thickness,) being estimated in the resource. The simulation techniques used are based on the application of GSLIB software1and a general discussion of the two simulation processes is included. In conclusion the paper demonstrates how the results of two types of conditional sequential simulation can be combined to produce confidence limits that take both uncertainties into consideration. This technique does not replace the resource estimation; it serves as an additional tool to quantify confidence in the resource evaluation model. The topics considered in this contribution are in terms of continuous improvement of mineral resource evaluation.

A strong incentive exists for the coal-preparation engineer to improve plant efficiency by modifying circuits and upgrading process equipment, since these result in lower production costs and more valuable plant products. At the Grootegeluk Coal Mine, it was found that the overall plant efficiency could be improved by modifications to the dense-medium circuits, the installation of additional process equipment for the recovery of fine coal, and improvement of the fine-material processing circuit. Apart from these modifications, there is still potential to increase the plant efficiency, particularly in the utilization of plant waste, the recovery of slimes, and even the improvement of cycloning performance as a result of new cyclone design. This paper points to the potential wealth locked up in existing coal-preparation plants, and shows how the coal-preparation engineer, with new technology at his disposal, can unlock this wealth.

SYNOPSIS This paper traces the developments in flotation practice at Anglovaal's Prieska Copper Mine, with em¬phasis on the depression/deactivation of lead and zinc. A depressant system was devised to accept feed material that was once regarded as untreatable. Of particular interest is the long-term downward trend of concentrator working costs in real terms. This trend follows the classic Experience Curve, which relates production costs to cumulative experience. It is felt that the experience-curve concept has important implications for the mining industry in general.

Rheological measurements on pulps from South African gold mines by G. s. HANSFORD, Ph.D. (Pennsylvania), M.Sc. (Cape Town), C. D. LEVY, B.Sc. (Eng.), and J. W. DE KOCK, Ph.D. (Cantab.), B.Sc. (A.I.C.) (Visitors) A method is described for the determination of the rheological parameters of a fast-settling slurry with conventional viscometric measuring equipment. The effect of concentration, temperature, and pH on these parameters is investigated. The results agree with those obtained by previous workers using different viscometers, but this method allows a more detailed characterization of all the properties. From a literature survey, two semi-empirical equations were found that allow the effect of concentration, temperature, or pH on the rheological parameters to be correlated.

Flumes are ubiquitous throughout the mining and minerals processing industries as well as being used in the polymer processing and pulp and paper industries. With the increased demand for the transport of highly concentrated slurries in rectangular open channels, there is an impetus for a better understanding of the role of rheology in flow hydraulics. Until recently, design of such channels has been based on either the Chézy or Manning equations used for modelling open channel flow of Newtonian fluids. This has been done for modelling turbulent flow of low concentrated slurries with some success. However, this is not the case for highly concentrated slurries where the flow in the channel is no longer turbulent. Unlike Newtonian fluids, work carried out on flow of pseudo-homogeneous, non-Newtonian fluids in open channels is somewhat limited. Moreover, these results have been published in a variety of sources. This paper attempts to give a critical review of the work carried out on Newtonian and non-Newtonian flow of pseudo-homogeneous non-settling slurries in rectangular open channels. A comparison is also made of the models based on power law, Bingham plastic and Herschel-Bulkley fluids for laminar and turbulent flow in rectangular open channels.

This paper describes detailed fractographic analyses of several specimens that had undergone corrosion-fatigue tests at high stress ratios in simulated pressurized water-reactor environments. The distribution and morphology of non-metallic manganese sulphide inclusions are shown to strongly affect the growth of environmentally assisted cracks (EAC), and certain features suggest that a hydrogen-assisted mechanism is responsible for the observed EAC growth. The incidence of transient EAC growth in isolated regions suggests that the critical conditions that trigger this type of growth are the 'right' local chemistry at the crack tips and imposed mechanical conditions.

Backfilling at Vaal Reefs during the experimental phase has been carried out using cyclone-separated tailings which are transported underground hydraulically by means of a borehole. The selected tailings are piped from the borehole to the stope and then, after the addition of a flocculant, deposited in place via single or multiple nozzles. The successful performance of the backfill/stope system relies not only on the actual quality of the placed material, but also on the effective operation of stope filling. The success of stope filling relates to the complex, time- dependent interaction of backfill, stope and barricade materials, and the transport and placement procedures used. A comprehensive laboratory testing programme was carried out on backfill materials at Vaal Reefs in conjunction with the experimental stope- filling operation. The range of testing techniques corresponds to the requirements of each stage of the backfilling process. Where necessary, new or alternative techniques were sought during the course of the experiment to satisfy and facilitate better understanding of the different processes. These techniques comprise both routine quality control testing and research-oriented testing. The laboratory testing techniques appropriate to each stage of the backfill process are briefly discussed. This paper presents the main conclusions of the study and identifies areas for further research.
